Princess Charlotte's "Very Excited" For First Day Of School

Princess Charlotte marked a significant milestone this morning as she arrived with William, Kate and big brother George for her first day of Reception at Thomas's Battersea.

For all parents, preparing your little one for their first day of school is a very special time; from taking snaps for the family album to assuring them they are going to be absolutely fine and have a brilliant day. I imagine seeing them in their uniforms and realising he or she is growing up is a bittersweet part of the day. I'm sure many of you can relate to those feelings as school term commences.

This morning will have been particularly important to Kate. Two years ago, when George attended his first day of school, the Duchess was unable to take him as she expecting Louis and suffering from Hyperemesis gravidarum.

Charlotte held Kate's hand as they arrived.

During the summer, the Cambridges enjoyed a two-week break to Mustique where they celebrated Prince George's birthday, and divided the remainder of their time between their Norfolk home Anmer Hall and Kensington Palace, before travelling to Balmoral to visit Her Majesty and Prince Philip.

The family were greeted by Helen Haslem, head of Thomas' lower school, William told her Charlotte's "very excited" about school.

More from The Telegraph:

'The Duchess said "Good morning! How are you? Did you have a nice summer?" before encouraging Charlotte to shake hands. The Duke added: "First day! She's very excited." While George chatted happily, Princess Charlotte walked slightly behind her mother and tugged on her hand in a shy contrast to her usual confident appearances.
Princess Charlotte has become known for her spirited appearances in front of the cameras, usually seeming calm and confident in her rare moments in the spotlight. As she visited her brother Prince Louis at the Lindo Wing following his birth, she charmed onlookers with an impromptu look and wave behind her as she climbed the steps.
During his christening, she was caught on camera cheerfully telling photographers "you're not coming" as she walked to a tea party with her family. In a recent trip to a charity sailing regatta on the Isle of Wight, she left the Duchess laughing after she poked her tongue out at a waiting crowd.'

The Princess will be known as Charlotte Cambridge at school. People recently reported the four-year-old "can't wait to be at big school with George. She's so excited about it all". We know she's very outgoing, characterful and has a playful personality, undoubtedly she's eager to dig into a new adventure.

I remember George arriving with William, full of apprehension and those first day nerves. According to various reports since, he's settled in brilliantly and is very much enjoying school life. He's beginning Year 2 today.

Those Cambridge expressions :)

Making their way inside where George will be reunited with old friends and Charlotte will be introduced to new ones. Kate said "George will help lead the way".

Charlotte's schoolbag was decorated with a Unicorn charm.

Thomas’s Battersea is a busy, thriving, purposeful school, educating 560 boys and girls between the ages of 4 and 13. The most important school rule is 'Be Kind'. Core values include courtesy, honesty, respect, leadership and independence. The school, has been described by the Good Schools Guide as: "A big, busy, slightly chaotic school for cosmopolitan parents who want their children to have the best English education money can buy. That is what they want and, to a large degree, that is what they get." The school has a big focus on celebrating a range of different cultures within its walls, with 19 languages spoken in the homes of its pupils. The fee-paying school charges in the region of £17k per year.

The Headmaster writes about Thomas's:

'We offer a rich and broad curriculum, with Art, Ballet, Drama, ICT, French, Music and PE all taught by specialist teachers from a child’s first day in school. The school is structured in three, three-year stages (the Lower, Middle and Upper Schools) within a framework of 'Enjoyment, Learning and Achievement', which informs a child’s journey through the school. Children join at the age of four and leave at 11 or 13. Whilst we are proud of our record of senior school entrance and scholarship successes, we place a greater emphasis on a set of core values, which include kindness, courtesy, confidence, humility and learning to be givers, not takers. We hope that our pupils will leave this school with a strong sense of social responsibility, set on a path to become net contributors to society and to flourish as conscientious and caring citizens of the world.'

Thomas's believes that the Early Years Foundation Stage is fundamental in instilling positive dispositions towards learning. In the Reception year children play and explore; make choices and learn to have a go and persevere; be creative and solve problems; form good relationships; be safe, secure and happy. A stimulating environment, including a multi-sensory outdoor play area, supports the teachers’ planned activities and the children’s own initiatives for learning. The seven areas of learning and development that comprise the Early Years Foundation Stage are: personal, social and emotional development, communication and language, physical development, literacy, mathematics, understanding the world, and expressive arts and design.

Students enjoy a nutritious and varied lunch menu adapted seasonally. Wholesome, organic and vegetarian options are offered. Think warming soups, plenty of fruit and vegetables, wheat twisty pasta, Mediterranean couscous and baked smoked mackerel served on a bed of puy lentils and lamb ragout with garlic and fresh herbs, served with organic grated cheese, baton carrots and cucumber. Desserts include tropical fruit smoothies and oatmeal and raisin cookies.

The Duchess wore her very pretty MICHAEL Michael Kors Carnation Georgette Dress.

The multicoloured summery dress is described as "a colorful carnation print in shades of red, pink, navy and white. Made from lightweight crepe, it's buttoned through the front so you can customize the neckline, and has softly gathered sleeves. Knot the coordinating leather belt to define your frame." Kate first wore it for Harry and Meghan's wedding rehearsal last year.

A closer look at the print.

The past season £150 piece is sold out, however Middleton Maven notes it's available in a scarlet/black botanical print at Bloomingdales.

It appears Kate wore her navy suede Prada pumps.

The Duchess accessorised with her Asprey Oak Leaf earrings.

Kate's lighter locks received much commentary on social media this morning. The cut actually reminds me of her hairstyle around the time of the engagement in 2010. It's very fresh and summery.

Wishing these two a great day!

Afterwards, the Palace shared this sweet photo of George and Charlotte taken outside KP this morning by Adam who works for the royals social media team. Are you seeing miniature version of Michael Middleton and the Queen? :)

In other news, Rebecca English reports Kate will visit RHS Wisley to see a new playground inspired by Back To Nature next week.

  9. As I saw Kate's new, slightly different hairstyle, my first thought was "Oh, Carole!", lol. I prefer Kate's hair in darker hues, but she looks very happy, healthy and pretty anyway. She really has those relaxed and confident looks she first got after having Louis. I am more and more certain that it has to do with her sense for family life - she must be so happy with what they've created/achieved with William and their kids.

    1. I prefer Kate's hair darker as well. I guess she will tend to go with lighter hues as she gets older (over the many years!). She still looks amazing!

    2. It is also that the morning sun is shining on it and making it appear even lighter. Even Charlotte's hair has that early morning sun shine glow to her hair. While I am sure that Kate does some touching up and experimenting with her hair color, think some of this is summer sun hair, it just feels more natural.

    3. Her more confident auras not only due to her creation of a happy family unit I feel, but also to her maturation as an individual.

  10. What a special and precious day! Sending your little one(s) to the "big" world/school. The moment you see your kid joining this big world is really a moment of mixed feelings: joy, pride, worry, curiosity... and wonder: where has the time gone?
The Cambridges look lovely, Kate pretty as usual and very down-to-earth and friendly to everybody. I'm sure George wasn't particularly happy about all the clicking of the cameras but I'm sure he has got used to it over the years. Charlotte will have a lot to talk about when she comes home today! Her uniform really suits her!
Thank you for the post, Charlotte! It brought a lot of joy.

Kate looks particularly pretty today, her hair is fantastic. Seems like Charlotte will have her mother's beautiful hair! Loved the unicorn on Charlotte's school back pack! A very happy post indeed! cc

  13. Charlotte, with everything said about privacy recently I was wondering was this a full media event or a royal rota with only one photographer & one video camera that gets shared to all media outlets?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hello Rachel,

There was a very small media pool as with George's first day. One photographer took the photos and they were then distributed using the ROTA system to other agencies. It's the best system especially as it's a busy first day for the school generally and it would be quite daunting for the children if they were greeted by a huge media presence.

  14. Lovely family. They all looked so happy. Kate looks fantastic. Her hair style looks great. I also love her dark hair but this lighter look is very attractive also and I know as I started going grey it was easier to use blond highlights to help cover the grey. Love the dress on her.

  15. So cute! And Kate looks wow! I can't really make out the kid's eye colour. George appears to have dark brown. Has Charlotte's gotten darker as well? They don't look blue to me. And Louis also has brown eyes?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Brown eyes will be dominant over blue. The brown eyed parent has to have a recessive blue gene for the kids to have blue eyes, as my brother and I do from our hazel-eyed mother and blue eyed father.

      Delete
    2. I know that all too well! (We have so many brown eyes on my side of the family, that it is virtually impossible for my kids to have non brown eyes, even though my partner has beautiful blue eyes). In this case though neither Kate (green eyed) nor William (clear blue) have brown eyes. So it would be rather a surprise if 3 out 3 kids turn out brown-eyed. George and Louis I see as definite brown, Charlotte's I cant really tell

      Delete
    3. I would agree with Anon 12:42 about not all three children having brown-eyes. Charlotte had the bluest eyes up to two years old, but I think her eyes are now a dark blue with some hints of green in them. The last picture where they show dark blue is the one where she is wearing the cute yellow sweater; another close-up from Louis' christening shows them to be a dark blue but there are hints of green in them. I am light blue-eyed, my husband brown-eyed. My two children have different eye colors from us; my daughter has hazel/green eyes and my son has blue/green eyes. His are harder to tell because they seem dark but when you get up close you can see the blue and green, really a pretty color, like a fancy marble :). I like that it's a bit of a mystery as to what exactly is her eye color.

  18. Oh, the many shades of Kates hair! I do love the length, it is very becoming on her. It is long but the length is a more age appropriate look for her. It allows her to wear it up when the occasion calls for it and when down looking sophisticated. A great effortless dress that we can all use in our closet. The children are darling in their school uniforms just like many children standing on the bus stop today.

    1. I agree. This is a great length for Kate and in this season of her life. I think the shade works with her tan but I hope she doesn't go any lighter. =) She brought back her long fringe too.

    3. For natural brunettes transitioning from that colour to grey, or at the very least hiding the grey hairs can be a real struggle. If you colour too dark and have too much grey you get the inevitable "skunk line" grow out. (Well for ordinary people who can only afford a trip to the hairdresser every six weeks or so) When I was about Catherine's age I started to colour lighter brown with blonde highlights, eventually ending up in my late 50's more blonde than brunette. Last year I accepted the inevitable and stopped colouring completely. If CC has a lot of grey - the might be the reason for the lighter shade.

    4. Could it just be “summer sun touched hair”? Time outside near the water? Charlotte’s hair has a similar look. It happens even when you try to protect your hair if you are outdoors a lot. It did to me!

Like Charlotte this morning, I recently started school (graduate school) again and am working on a second master's degree. And like Charlotte, I too have been nervous. With a family, parenting, dealing with rheumatoid arthritis, and going back to school, I am finding it all a bit draining and overwhelming right now. Having graduated with my first master's degree 12 years ago, I had blocked out just how intense and stressful graduate school was. Returning to it is not like riding a bicycle, but more like being on a rollercoaster.

Hopefully Charlotte will enjoy her first day and I'm glad she has her big brother there for support.

The first thought that popped up in my mind when I saw these photos was that Kate reminds me so much of Mary of Denmark today - a resemblance that I had never seen until today. Maybe it's the hair and the dress? Holding the children between them on the 1st day of school?

  36. Kate's dress ties in with school uniform colors, how nice of her to think of it today. She looks relaxed and pretty, summer break did her good. Unsurprised that tuition for the two children exceeds my annual salary; it's the same for posh private schools here in the States as well. Charlotte is beyond adorable in that uniform, and reminds me of the Queen yet again.

  38. Cute pictures! Both Charlotte and George look 100% Windsor. Charlotte looks a lot like Queen Elizabeth. I don't see any Middleton or Spencer in them. I love the fact that Charlotte's outfit was clearly designed to absorb some growing. And she's definitely already tall and rather leggy.

As for Kate I love the hair although not so much the shade. I love her dark brown hair. I'm also not really a fan of the midi print dresses she so favors as of late. But that's very Kate -- once she finds a style that catches her fancy, she really goes all in on that style.

Hi Ivy Lin, I’m guessing our darling Duchess is facing a problem with her “grey’s” peaking through at a rapid rate. My hair is about the same dark brown as Catherine’s and at her age, I had to start going lighter and lighter. I wonder what she’ll do, as her dark hair is beautiful, but within a few days she’d have grey roots. She almost needs an ash colour put over this to counter balance the red hue. The cut is just gorgeous. I think her best ever, and I love her dress ❤️

      Delete
    3. I get that. I just find the lighter color less unique than her chestnut hair. One good trick for hiding the greys is wearing your hair up or pulled back.

  42. I love the picture KP released this afternoon. George and Charlotte are obviously very close and it shows. I think George continues to maintain his combination of resembling Michael Middleton and William. Charlotte sometimes looks like the Queen and more often than not, looks like William. Since both children share physical similarities with William (more Charlotte than George), the Spencer genes are there too as William is the spitting image of his mother.

  43. The happiness we see in Kate I think is in part thanks to being done with the having children and getting to just enjoy the having them, knowing the pregnancies are beyond her and they all turned out healthy. Those must gave been anxious years, in the spotlight.

  44. Kate looks very very pretty -- I love that style of dress and I love the prints whe wears. She wears them so well. I miss her really dark hair but today her hair color and cut just looked great! She just couldn't be prettier!! The whole family looked super, and I also love the last photo. I was thinking yesterday that Kate's brother is continuing to do a great service by discussing his depression and giving people "permission" to find their personal assistance, as he has with his dog family. Kate is having a great life now -- she has three terrific kids, her sister is happy and has a son, her brother is dealing with his depression and no doubt relieving the family of a lot of worry. I think that is one reason she is so happy and so willing to be part of the public. We have just seen so much happiness lately -- their interactions with cousins and with Meghan and Harry. I think all is good.

  45. The Duchess looks lovely. I like the navy belt and shoes. Her hair lighter and shorter looks fantastic, so soft looking. The photo of the children with their arms around each other is beautiful. So lovely that the public is able to share the moments with them.

  46. She looks beautiful and relaxed, i like the hair a lot...like the dress also but better with another belt. I see she wants to recycle but the cocodrile had not much to do with the dress. I agree with the comment about confidente and family. I think kate has reached her personal balance...she is very focused on her role as a mother, she has found the charities and goals she wants to concentrate as a royal member and she is making it work altogether. You can see it in her relaxed smile.

    1. That won't be permitted until she is a lot older. It won't be considered the right thing to do while she is still a child.

    2. I don’t think it is a case of it being “not permitted”.
But rather a personal decision by K&W to wait until she is older or wait until she ask for it herself.
I know it is very common in a lot of cultures to pierce girls ears when they are very young, but I have always wondered why it is socially acceptable but giving your child a tattoo would not be? Both are permanent changes to the body of a small child in which they have no say.

    3. It's by no means standard for little girls to have pierced ears here (thank goodness), and especially not in the social strata the Cambridges move in. It would be quite a shock to see Charlotte with ears pierced so young.

    4. Well put Cath. That was what I was trying to say.

    5. Cath, what do you mean by thank goodness. Piercing a child’s ears is not child abuse, and it’s accepted by the majority.

    6. I remember how frustrated I was because I only had my ears pierced at the age of 12. I envied all the other girls who had their ears pierced as babies and did not remember any pain. I was more afraid than when I had to get an injection! (This was in the 1980s, before local anasthaesia became quite common here.)

    7. I personally dislike intensely the piercing of children's ears, and while I wouldn't go so far as to call it abuse I certainly feel it verges on the unethical. Opinions vary widely on this, so I'm not sure it's possible to say what the majority view is.

    8. Opinions vary and so do cultures. While it isn't done in the UK upper classes, I am not shocked at all by little girls having their ears pierced. If they are are going to wear earrings anyway, it is a safe and painless way to do it. There are other kind of things I feel are unethical, starting with toddlers been given a phone to play and be quiet.

    9. forgive me...I laughed at the unethical part

    11. Ear piercing should be a personal choice made by the person considering having it done (an autonomous decision). I believe it should never be a decision made for someone, especially when a child is involved. While I understand that certain cultures and families desire to pierce young children's ears, I vehemently disagree with the practice. Not every person is going to want to have their ears pierced and that is okay. I did not want to have my ears pierced and I never have.

    12. Here in the United States it is quite common to see a baby with pierced ears and the majority of people don’t make a big deal about it. I think it’s different in Britain because I have read so many articles on making baby and child piercings illegal. I obviously don’t know Will and Kate’s personal views on this but I think it wise of them to not pierce Charlotte’s ears so young because if they did they would probably get tons of backlash in the UK.

    13. RachelZA,
It’s socially acceptable because ear piercings are part of many peoples heritage and in some cultures the tradition goes back many many centuries. I don’t think getting a tattoo is a part of anybodies heritage.

Laugh all you like. I absolutely do find it unethical to inflict pain on a child too young to give informed consent for no better reason than that his/her parents think it looks nice.

    15. I feel in the UK it is seen as 'common' & not 'good practice for children as young as Charlotte to have pierced ears.

    16. Anon 23:51, just because something has been done for years doesn’t make it right.
Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against pierced ears, I wear earrings everyday myself. But I am also very glad my mom waited until I was old enough to ask to have my ears pierced.
      My body, my decision.

    17. The more I stay on this blog the more I realize how we get sidetracked about judging other people and their decisions and the decisions they make for their families. If it does not affect me directly and is not causing harm (physically or emotionally) I try to stay off my high horse and mind my own family. Like someone else said, my 2 cents:)

  51. I think Kate looks amazing! I also love how there was no fuss, no drama around it all. William and Kate are doing a fantastic job or balancing parenting with their role as Royals. What sweet photos today and Kate's hair is so good!!!!

  52. Delighted to see the lovely picture of George and Charlotte with their arms around each other- they look so happy together! First time I think we see Charlotte acting a little bit shy. Is this the first time when she is the focus of attention? Kate's dress is picture perfect, picking up the colours of the children's uniforms. William and Harry did not inherit their parents clothes sense, and today William's jacket looks about a size too small, but he is looking like a very proud dad. The Cambridges exude a happy family vibe that is lovely to see.

  54. I can't believe they've grown so much! Charlotte looks a lot like her cousin Lady Chatto. George is definitely a Middleton. Both are extremely beautiful children.

  56. So cute! Love these family pictures! And Kate's hair! SO pretty! She has such thick curly hair that I know it takes a long time to achieve this look but it's beautiful. Looking forward to the fall.

  57. Beautiful family on another special day for Charlotte and George! I really think Charlotte looks a lot like the Queen’s niece Sarah when she was around the same age, and George’s looks seem to be changing quite a bit as he grows - a bit more Windsor and not quite as much Middleton?

    1. Agree, both of them are still changing so much, it is hard to see where they will end up by the time they get to their mid 20's.

    2. Just like teenage William was a splitting image of Diana and teenage Harry was all Spencer and these days I can easily confuse William with the Earl of Wessex and Harry is the spitting image of Prince Phillip, there will still be lots of changes over the years.

What a beautiful day, they all look so happy. The children are adorable, William is so handsome and I don’t think we’ve EVER seen Kate looking more beautiful. Her hair is simply stunning, her summer glow is gorgeous, her smile is radiant and they all seem so genuinely happy. (And, the photo from KP of G & C is divine) ❤️
