"It Takes A Village To Raise A Child": The Duchess Marks The Culmination Of Back To Nature

The Duchess of Cambridge began her September schedule today with a previously unannounced visit to RHS Wisley for the fun-filled Back To Nature festival.

It marks Kate's official return to duties following summer break. The engagement was the culmination of Kate's garden project which aimed to highlight the importance of children spending as much time as possible outdoors enjoying nature.

Kensington Palace said: "As part of her longstanding work on Early Years, the Duchess of Cambridge believes that spending time outdoors plays a pivotal role in children’s future health and happiness, building foundations that last through childhood and over a lifetime. Through her Back to Nature gardens, which were displayed earlier this year at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival, Her Royal Highness has aimed to highlight how spending time outdoors can enrich a child’s early development by providing an environment that encourages active exploration and the opportunity to form and strengthen positive relationships."

The Duchess officially opened a new play garden at Wisley, which was inspired by Back To Nature. Designed by landscape architects Davies White with support from RHS horticultural teams, it includes a number of features from the original garden at RHS Chelsea such as the hollow log and boulders from the waterfall and the hidden burrow and rolling hill from Hampton Court Garden.

New features include a bouncing forest where visitors can jump on trampolines, a living willow pod and two linked treehouses.

It's a permanent installation which children will enjoy for many years to come.

The Duchess enjoyed a chat with the Queen of Baking and RHS Wisley patron Mary Berry.

Kate has met Mary on a number of occasions over the years. She was once revealed she is "a big fan of her cookbooks and cakes".

To celebrate the Back To Nature festival will run throughout this week at Wisley.

It includes circus acts, maypole dancing, a coconut shy and a host of gardening activities.

Sue Biggs, RHS Director General, said: “We are grateful to The Duchess for the incredible impact that this ‘Back to Nature’ collaboration has had. There is no doubt that this project, through her passion and vision, has highlighted that access to natural environments and green spaces isn’t just a nice to have, it’s vital to have. This is something that the RHS also strongly believes in and will continue to champion through our Greening Great Britain Campaign and charitable work.”

A number of representatives, families and children from charities and organisations Kate has met over the course of her early years work were invited today.

Hannah Furness reports: "The Duchess was equally impressed by three-year-old Dylan Corbin from Woking, Surrey, who was dressed as an animal. “Are you a tiger?” she asked. “No," he said. "It’s face paint."

Kate was particularly taken by fifteen-month-old Matilda Griffiths. She chatted with mum Sarah about Louis and said "he loves to smell flowers" and spend time in the garden.

More from The Telegraph:

"Sarah Griffiths, 25, from Southend, Essex, who has been helped by the charity Family Action and brought her 15-month-old daughter Matilda with her, said: “The experience was a bit overwhelming, it’s still a bit of a daze, but really exciting. “She asked me how Family Action have helped me. They’ve helped me lots getting me out socialising.”

A very sweet video of Kate dancing with Matilda.

The group travelled via tractor and trailer before Kate's speech.

During a very nicely delivered speech, Kate spoke of the importance of laying the foundation blocks from the earliest years, her work in the area and how much she has enjoyed the process of creating the garden. "There is a well-known proverb – that it takes a village to raise a child – everyone here represents an integral part of that very village. By coming together, having fun, learning and experiencing new things, we can all impart life-long benefits on our children."

Kate's full speech from The Mail:

'As many of you know, I was invited by the RHS to co-design a garden for families and children for this year’s Chelsea Flower Show and Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. It’s been the most amazing experience and I can’t thank the RHS enough for giving me this wonderful opportunity.
'I am delighted that many of those features that first appeared in those gardens, have found a permanent home here at Wisley in the new children’s play garden. I hope it will enable thousands of children to discover and explore the natural world around them.
'I am not as green fingered as many of you here, but I was passionate about creating a garden that inspired children and adults alike to get back to nature and reap the positive mental and physical health benefits that it can bring. The gardens were, I suppose, a manifestation of some of the work I have been focusing on around how best we can support our children in the earliest years.
'The physical benefits of being outdoors and in nature are well documented. More recently, however, I have learnt that these often safe and supportive environments can also bring significant benefits to the cognitive, social and emotional development of our children too.
'The experiences we gain during our earliest years influence who we become as people. They influence how we interact in school, in work and in society and, ultimately how we bring up our own children.
'Whether it is planting, exploring, digging, creating, or playing; quality time spent outside provides children with the perfect environment to form those positive relationships with the people in their lives and the world around them. As a parent, I have learnt just how important it is to foster our children’s development, in all areas, not just physical, as soon as they are born.
'We build the blocks, the foundations, for future success and happiness later in their lives. These relationships, however, stretch far beyond the crucial one that a parent or carer has with its child.  Like in the animal kingdom, whether a pod, a pack, or a pride, the interactions we have with the broader community – be it with our grandparent, teachers or neighbours – play a crucial role in the growth and learning of our young.
'There is a well-known proverb – that it takes a village to raise a child – everyone here represents an integral part of that very village. By coming together, having fun, learning and experiencing new things, we can all impart life-long benefits on our children.
'That is why I wanted to invite you here today – many of whom I have met in my pursuit to learn more about the early years - to celebrate the work that you are doing, thank you personally and to continue working with you to inspire even more people to follow your lead. I hope you all have a wonderful day.'

Time for arts and crafts.

The Duchess continued her trend of wearing floral dresses for her garden visits by choosing the Emilia Wickstead Aurora dress (with thanks to Middleton Maven).

The $2,255 piece is described as: "This 'Aurora' shirt dress is made from light and breathable seersucker and decorated with her signature 'Rosewood' florals. Use the buckled belt to define your waist." It's available in limited sizing at Net-A-Porter.

Kate wore her Monsoon Fleur wedges.

A closer look at Kate's new earrings. They were initially identified as an Accessorize pair, however the eagle-eyed What Kate Wore correctly noted several differences. I'll update when/if they are definitively ID'd.

The Back To Nature garden is a lovely addition to Wisley. It was terrific to see so many children from various charities supported by the Duchess having fun and exploring with their loved ones - exactly what the project was all about.

  1. I find that I rarely like Emilia Wickstead... and again this dress is not great. It reminds me of my grandma’s bedspread. Nice to see Kate at an engagement though and one she likely loves.

  4. I think she's settling into the maxi floral dress as a look that's conservative, feminine, and a bit on trend (for now, Reformation etc.).

  5. Although I'm not as excited about this dress, I find in general I like the style that she's been wearing recently is so nice compared to the stiff starched other type. These are flowy, summery, relaxed, and fit in better with what other people are wearing.

  8. Oh also the belt! I like the belt but with it being printed, it doesn’t break up the print at all! I guess not a winner in my books! The colors are really pretty and springy! Even though it’s coming fall lol! Just joking, I know it’s becayse it’s a flower show haha

    1. Totally agree about the belt. Kate often puts awkward belts on clothing that splits the eye when admiring a coat or dress. The matching pattern gives the dress a more finished look.

  10. Between William's engagement yesterday and Kate's today, I'm glad to see that their work with mental health continues to be a primary focus (being outdoors can be beneficial for both physical and mental wellbeing).
This is Suicide Prevention week and month in the United States and today is World Suicide Prevention Day. It is a always a good opportunity to reach out to family, friends and colleagues and check in - have a conversation to make sure everything is going okay. I'm currently pursuing a graduate degree in clinical mental health counseling, so my investment in mental health education and advocacy is both a passionate and personal one. I was proud to hear William say yesterday that he wants to find time to train and volunteer with the UK's new crisis textline, Shout. It is obvious how deeply committed and invested he, Kate, Harry, and Meghan are in mental health advocacy.

Since it is World Suicide Prevention Day, I felt it was a good opportunity to post these numbers again:

    UK:
Shout - text SHOUT to 85258 for 24/7 crisis support
    Samaritans - 116 123 (Helpline)

    US:
Crisis Text Line - Text TWT to 741741 (24/7 crisis support)
    Suicide Prevention Lifeline - 1-800-273-8255

Dialogue and actions are taking place to offer a 3-digit suicide prevention lifeline for the United States (similar to the 911 emergency services number). The goal is to offer a number that would be easy to remember. This process is moving in a good direction.

  12. Love the dress and style on her that I think works well with her body type, though the fabric is more suited to spring rather than fall, but cheery for the venue. Also, I'm loving her foregoing the dark, dark eye shadow and instead using light taupe; same as the great lack of dark makeup around her eye lids on Charlotte's first day of school. She is so beautiful and it just radiates when her eyes are kept lighter as well.

  14. I am not a fan of the print especially as we come to the end of the Summer season. It is more Spring for me. I do love that she is on trend wearing the maxi length shirtdress style that is currently so popular. Is it my imagination or has she had her hair corrected from the kiss of the summer sun and now back to her normal color?

  15. I like the style of the dress and the material seems interesting, but I am not 100 percent loving the print. I do agree that it looks very springy, but it works for this event as she is getting down to the kids level, climbing on the wagon, etc. She looks beautiful, as always, especially being so genuine. I love events where there are children, as she really is a natural. I look forward to the day when she can bring one her kids with her to an event like this -- not wish time away!

She looks really great! I like way the hem of the dress moves when she walks. I like the fit of the dress, even those breast pockets, the fabric also seems nice. I do not however like the actual flower print on the dress but I think the DOC could almost carry off wearing a paper sack so?! lol. and somehow I just knew those wedges would be on her feet before I even scrolled down:) her hair has been looking spectacular and im liking those earing. she is just so at ease when in nature. this event is right up her alley. she is so comfortably set in herself and just seems to be so secure, I wonder, it seems to me a lot of self care - the good kind!! I wonder if she does therapy? seriously if I were her id need it to stay grounded! well maybe I need it now:) lol will be curious to get everyone else's take on the dress.

    1. I agree with you Caroline, Kate can pretty much wear anything, but would love to have a peek into her day to see what it is like, how she keeps herself grounded, and finds her balance! 2. It does make sense, CeCe, and I have similar feelings, I'd call it inspiration.
I love the look, and I love this whole occasion. Kate's speech is spot on and she delivers it very well. She will probably never be a "professional enthusiastic orator" (she has more important things to do!) but she has walked a long way!
The best dialogue of the day must be "Are you a tiger?" - "No, it's face paint" 🐯😁!!!

  19. It's a very pretty print -- a bit wallpaperish but the texture adds to its appeal. This is a great dress for Kate -- she can obviously wear anything but I like the slight flare of the skirt and the slight bulkiness. It's a very pretty "in-the-garden" print! And Mary's dress is really lovely, too.

  24. I am wondering if her earrings weren't bought/given to her when she went on tour to India and Bhutan. Given that she is heading to Pakistan soon, I smiled to think that maybe she is already experimenting with her jewelry

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm always taken back by the amount of jewelry (earrings) that Kate purchases several times a year with little if any comment from those who follow her. It certainly makes the term "unlimited budget" extremely real and questionable for me considering the very extensive beautiful collection she has already acquired not to mention what is at her disposal.

      Delete
    2. I have a fairly large collection of earrings amassed over 30-odd years. Some I hardly wear at all and, when I do wear them, my husband thinks they are new because I haven't worn them in such a long time. Some cost as little as $12 some are a couple of hundred dollars. Those are the most expensive earrings I have; I bought them at Birks in Canada after I saw the Duchess of Sussex wear them (they are the least expensive of her Birks collection but I thought they were beautiful.) As far as the Duchesses go, I see they usually wear the same pairs over and over so that, when they do wear a pair they haven't before, people seem to think it's extravagant. I don't.

      Delete
    3. On another site, it was said that Kate's earrings cost $10. So that would fit most budgets, although it can't be said for many of her jewels.

      Delete
    4. USA Granny, I agree. Personally, I feel that the equally extensive collection of similar looking floral dresses this summer has gone under the radar.

Is it really necessary to fill up your closet and jewelry box at that pace, simply because you can afford it?

      Delete
    5. I’m with you Valerie. I also have a large earring collection. I feel like Kate’s is actually fairly small. She has some fun pieces but I feel like her Mappin and Webb, a few of the Kiki’s, several pearl drop earrings(hoops, Diana’s and HM), her sapphires, and the gold hoop leaf ones, oh and those stupid drop heart ones( I hate those) are her go-to ones. But all these have been in regular rotation for years. Other than the 22 paid of Kiki look alikea in every color, the rest are varied enough to cover a variety of engagements.....hmmm, I seem to be WAY more interested in her earrings than in any of her dresses.

    6. I haven't thought much about the jewelry, but I did gasp when I saw that the print Emilia Wickstead dress was over 2,000 pounds (or dollars?). When I went back to check the exact price, the price had been removed because the dress is sold out! Geez!

  26. Love this event, love Kate! The print of the dress is very 'English rose' which suits Kate very well, and fitting for the occasion. I like the material and think that it makes it seem less 'old' IMO and gives a modern twist to the garden dress. I like the belt with this dress and that it is in the same material. This look is certainly on trend with the maxi/floral dresses that are popular right now. They are great work dresses, yet feminine. The dress photographs well against the backdrop of the green and flowers of the garden. I agree with others that Kate is in her element and seems so confident these days, she looks beautiful as always. Love the interaction with the young girl who seemed very comfortable in Kate's presence. Great event and happy that the garden has found a forever home. Love that Mary Berry is there!! She and Kate seem like they get on quite well with each other, but then I think Kate pretty much seems to have a good time most all of the time! 2. I had the same feeling.
Maybe her contentness doesn't come from having finished her family, but rather from knowing that it is not yet finished?
She has been very athletic, but seems much softer laterly, I already noticed that at Wimbledon.
I do not think she is expecting already, especially with the upcoming tour, but maybe "preparing", also in order to get ready for the usually hard beginning of her pregnancies.

So, that was already quite a bit of speculation from my side!

    3. What is different is that she had her hair touch-up on the top since the first day of school for her children Charlotte

    4. I really don't think so. There are women with pregnancy glow but Kate is not one of those women. Her HG makes her look drawn and tired during pregnancy. Are we not forgetting that two years ago she couldn't even make it to George's first day of school? If Kate starts looking tired and sallow then I'll think yeah, maybe she's pregnant. But she looks happy and healthy and also (this is delicate but important) a more realistic weight for a mom of three kids.

    5. While I would love to see more little Cambridges, I feel like they might be done for good. And she definiteliy looks too healthy and happy. Every pregnancy announcement had several weeks of more gaunt appearances and headlines about her being way too thin (which was spot on due to her HG) beforhand.

    2. It is a fine line they need to navigate. I love seeing the royals involved in things they are passionate about but if you only focus on things you are interested in then it becomes all about YOU. And that is not what royal work is all about.
I think it is something all 4 young royals are struggling with at the moment. Everytime I read that a royal tour is planned around the interests of the couple I feel like it is the wrong way around, it should focus on what the country/area offer or need and not on what the royals are interested in.
So yes I would love to see Kate get involved in maybe the elderly or a literacy project for teenagers l, and Meghan maybe championing a boys’ sport.

Nothing announced yet, although I do think we'll hear engagement announcements by the end of the week. I'm not entirely sure, but I think it's possible the full tour itinerary will not be released until the end of the month for security reasons.

  43. The first photo is extremely endearing! And it takes a lot of courage to be the center of the day's activity, and she seemed to really enjoy herself. I like the updated forest, and especially love the bouncing forest, although in the US, someone would cut through the pads and cause injuries. I do yearn for her beautiful dark hair, remembering her visit to Paris, but I'm glad she's happy with her pretty caramel hair.

I read that the earrings may not be the very inexpensive version -- they have some subtle differences. I hope their origin is found; they are really pretty on a closeup.

  44. I can't help but notice ... Kate's accent is decidedly less posh nowadays and more modern Brit. there was a time when she talked like she had marbles in her mouth.

    1. Funnily enough, she actually sounds more genuinely posh than she used to, Her accent at first was tight and too careful. To a British person, she simply sounded as if she was trying too hard. Now that she has learned to breathe, and to find her own voice, she has the ease of manner which is the main characteristic of what you call "posh". It is now quite nice to hear her speak, and not the excruciating experience it used to be. Good for her. She may have worked hard to become so apparently relaxed.

    2. To a Canadian/American who has lived in the UK and Ireland I regularly get my accents mixed up. But like Cecilia says, I DO know "posh" and she is definitely posh. Not affected posh but someone who has been to the best schools and mingles with the aristocracy and upper classes. Again I don't mean that to say she is snobby, people in the UK are "located" by their accents and when I lived there in the 1970s I counted myself luckily with my mid-Atlantic accent that I couldn't be "pegged." I do wish, however, that I could master the Irish lilt, that's my favorite accent :)

    3. Thank you Cecilia for explaining so well! As a non-native speaker, it isn't easy to get all the subtilities of accents.

This is completely off-topic BUT I know there are Downton Abbey fans here too... so I have to share this: I'm just coming home from the cinema, having seen the Downton film- And I loved it!!! :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) I'm a bit excited as you can imagine :-) Seeing all those characters that I'd been missing for so long! :-) Listening to the music! Seeing Downton on the big screen!!! :-) :-) :-) I wonder if the Cambridges get to see it soon!

    1. Hello,

Not for this tour, George and Charlotte will have school. Nanny Maria Teresa and Kate's parents will look after them.
