Kate's In Polka-Dots For Family Nurse Partnership Visit

An unannounced engagement for the Duchess of Cambridge this morning in Camberwell, South London, as she paid a visit to Sunshine House Children and Young People’s Health and Development Centre to meet with the Southwark Family Nurse Partnership team.

Kensington Palace said the appearance was organised to "highlight the valuable work" that Family Nurse Partnership do and to further Kate's research and engagement with the Early Years sector. They added: "FNP in Southwark is delivered by Evelina London, of which Her Royal Highness is Patron. As part of Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust, Evelina London is a major children’s hospital and provider of community services. From health visitors and school nurses to specialist treatment for children with long-term health conditions, Evelina London’s community services care for children and families across the boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark." The Queen passed her patronage of Evelina London to Kate last December.

Following Kate's arrival, there was a very sweet moment when four-year-old Oliver presented the Duchess with a posy. Kate thanked him and asked him a question, he was feeling very shy and turned around toward his mother.

Kate caught up with Oliver and his mother Chloe later on during the visit.

Family Nurse Partnership is a voluntary home visiting programme for first-time young mums and families. It aims to ensure young women have a healthy pregnancy, reach their personal goals and helps to improve their child's health and development.

FPN is underpinned by an internationally recognised evidence base which shows the initiative improves outcomes both in the short and long term. Parents are partnered with a trained family nurse who visits them regularly until their child reaches two.

Kate enjoyed chatting with Amina and her little one Ramira.

More from Evelina London:

'Amina Deen, 23, from Elephant and Castle in south east London, spoke to The Duchess about the care she received. She was supported by the FNP team during the first two years of her three-year-old daughter Ramira’s life.
Amina said: “The Duchess was lovely and down to earth. She was very interested in Ramira and asked lots of questions about the support I received from the Evelina London FNP team and seemed very impressed by the service.
“When I was pregnant with Ramira, my nurse Debbie helped me find suitable housing.  When Ramira was born she would regularly visit us and we attended classes together at my local children’s centre. Debbie has constantly been there for Ramira and me. I feel very thankful for the support I’ve received from the Evelina London FNP team. It’s given me the confidence and knowledge to be an even better parent.”

It's been twelve years since FNP commenced their work in England. In 2017, they marked their tenth anniversary and a number of milestones including: The 1,000,000th FNP visit, The 30,000th FNP baby born, The 950th Family Nurse trained and the 200th supervisor trained.

More on the teams from FNP:

'Family Nurse Partnership (FNP) is delivered in around 80 areas across England. Each local team is made up of specially trained family nurse supervisors, family nurses, and quality support officers.
Family nurse supervisors are experienced and highly skilled health professionals who also receive extensive additional training from the FNP National Unit. They lead the local team: providing supervision to their nurses, incorporating formative, restorative and normative elements, ensuring safeguarding of clients and their children; developing the learning of the nurses in their team; and engage and build positive relationships with a wide range of stakeholders. Importantly, they also carry a small caseload of clients.
Like supervisors, family nurses are experienced, qualified nurses who undergo extensive additional training. Family nurses visit their clients at home, following the FNP visit guidelines and using the programme theories, their learning, professional knowledge and judgment to individualise them to the strengths and challenges of each family, apportioning time across defined programme domains. They carry a maximum caseload of 25 clients.
Quality support officers are responsible for a wide range of administrative and data management functions. They work with the supervisor to ensure all client data it is up to date, and that relevant reports are compiled on time. Quality support officers also create and manage resources and work directly with a range of FNP stakeholders.'

Rebecca English reports Kate talked about how quickly children grow up and said she can't believe George is six already.

The Duchess met mothers who have completed the programme and discussed how the additional support helped them and their children.

Kate heard about the strategic direction and development of the FNP programme in England from Ailsa Swarbrick, Director of the FNP National Unit.

Jane Powell, Evelina London Director of Nursing said:

“It was fantastic to welcome our Patron, The Duchess of Cambridge, back to Evelina London to meet our Family Nurse Partnership team. They do a truly fantastic job supporting young parents to provide the very best care possible to their children.
“We are at the heart of our local communities in Lambeth and Southwark, giving children the very best start in life. We care for children, young people and their families at home and close to home, in clinics, health centres, schools and nurseries.
“This year is extra special for us as we have been celebrating our 150th anniversary. Our birthday wish is to be there for even more children and young people who need us.”

A nice roundup video with great footage of Kate meeting Oliver.

The Duchess opted for a stylish professional look today - choosing a chic polka dot blouse and high-waisted cropped black trousers.

Caroline Parr swiftly identified Kate's blouse as the Equipment Slim Signature Polka-Dot Shirt. The £270 piece is described as: "Cut from lightweight washed-silk, it has a slightly loose fit and curved hem that looks especially cool styled half-tucked."

The midnight blue and white washed-silk piece is available at Equipment, ShopBop and Nordstrom.

Caroline also suggests Kate wore the £29.99 ZARA Culottes. The high waisted, wide-leg pair with size zip fastening appear to be a match.

Kate wore her trusty Gianvito Rossi Piper block heel shoes.

Kate accessorised with the same gold drop earrings she wore last Tuesday for her visit to RHS Wisley.

It's been widely suggested they are a sold out £5 Accessorize pair. They are incredibly similar, however Susan from What Kate Wore correctly noted subtle differences in the metalwork and spotted more intricate wirework in Kate's pair in her post last week.

If you were tuning into Blue Peter today, you might have seen a familiar Duchess... Footage from Kate's visit to RHS Wisley last week featured with an update on the competition Kate launched on the show in June to encourage children to get involved in Back To Nature by designing a sculpture to feature in the permanent garden.

The winning submission is a beautiful butterfly sculpture designed by Jessica. It's made of wood and recycled metal and covered in clematis flowers.

In other news, Kensington Palace announced an engagement for William and Kate next Thursday:

'The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will visit Birkenhead on Thursday 26th September to attend the naming ceremony of the UK’s new polar research ship, the RRS Sir David Attenborough. Before the ceremony, Their Royal Highnesses will undertake a short tour of the ship.
Owned by the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and operated by the British Antarctic Survey (BAS), the RRS Sir David Attenborough will enable world-leading research to be carried out in Antarctica and the Arctic over the next 25 to 30 years. Studying these remote regions plays a crucial role in allowing us to understand the changes in our planet’s oceans, marine life and climate systems. The ship will be available year-round to the UK’s research community.'

The Court Circular notes Kate attended two Royal Foundation meetings over the past week and both William and Kate met with Love Actually director Richard Curtis separately last week. There's whispers we might see them team up for a mental health initiative. A royal source told People they "discussed their shared interest in mental wellbeing and supporting families".

  1. It is so nice to see Kate continue her trend from earlier in the year to do a low key local visit every week.
As for the outfit, I like the shirt as it was styles by the designer with jeans but I am not a huge fan of the high waisted cullots. Having said that I think the outfit hit the right notes for a low key working visit. More so than some of her dresses.

  2. Kate outfit today and look is very in fashion and professional. And polished. I have wore for many years polka-dot blouses in navy & white and black & white to work and functions. Love it, this is a win for today’s outing. 💙

  5. Are there any native speakers here? What is the difference between a health visitor and a family nurse in the UK?

    1. Gaby, I am totally guessing here, because I don't live in the UK. In the part of Canada, where I live, after giving birth we get visits from a Registered Nurse. This is to be sure there are no medical issues for the mother or child. After that, we get several visits from a volunteer. This second person is often an older woman, who is there to offer support. It is based on her experience as a mother, who has raised children and can offer practical advice. So perhaps that is the difference also in the two people in the UK.

    2. I have never heard the term "family nurse" before. (But then, it is a long time since my children wrre born.) From a reference in the article, I think it is an innovation. Health visitors have been with us for ages, as have district nurses. The former do home visits for very young children and also run clinics for children. District nurses have a more general remit, and do things like changing wound dressings when one goes home after surgery.

    3. Never having really thought about it before, I have googled the NHS website:

      https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/public-health/roles-public-health/health-visitor

Frankly, I don't understand why the term "family nurse" has been introduced. Does any nurse in this group know?

    4. I'm from Scotland, living in England. A family nurse will be a registered and qualified nursing professional. A health visitor checks on progress and wellbeing (advice on developmental things, feeding, teething, toilet training, sleep, speech, routines, etc) and can refer for medical consults or on to other support systems, but is not a medical professional.

    5. A health visitor is definitely a healthcare professional. They will be a nurse or midwife who has then done additional training and often a Masters:

    1. I think you are right Natacha. I don't mind this low-key approach though and think it suits both Kate and her initiatives. And while I have always believed Kate had several behind the scenes meetings, I like that we are hearing a little bit more about them. Family Nurse Partnership is a great initiative, and seems to be a wonderful resource for parents. cc

    2. Kate has always work a lot behind the scenes so she doesn't just stay home and lay around as people say she does. She has done a couple of private engagements and meetings these past couple of weeks at Kennington Palace. My guess it's about upcoming engagements, more intatives announcement, and also getting ready for the Pakistan tour.

  9. What a nice surprise with unannounced enagament before weekend. I believe that it 's the one small visit which will follow by another as we used to that kind of meetings with children and parents. Maybe it 's the beginning of a new project of mental health ?
Look is stylish and professional. I would adore if she would add a bit of colour but black - white classic is still irresistible.

So good to see her! I really love this shirt on her! like the earing's, love those shoes (but not so much with the pants). I know im one of the "really really wish Kate would wear some Pants" girls but in my opinion these are not so flattering on her. I think they are too high-wasted and too short at the same time. I don't think these are right for her body type, wish I could mail her some slim cigarette pants! I also am going to have to agree with those that had posted before about her hair color, it seems really reddish, I agree it looks better darker but her hairstyle looks great. She is so beautiful no matter what and she is working for great causes. I had not heard of the FNP and then you mentioned that QE2 handed this one over in December. Im wondering how many patronages the DoC is up too? thanks for always telling me something new! Apprecaite your blog Charlotte, its the best!

  11. I love the polka dots. I like the crop pants better in the video than in the still photos. They move nicely. I think this look is professional and a nice change from her usual dresses. Mostly I love how engaged she is! Nice to see her today!

  15. Kate looked wonderful. The blouse and pants professional yet relaxed. I like the high wasted pants on her, I am not a fan of cropped pants but they and the wide legs are very popular at the moment and look good on Kate. I would have worn a different shoe but the one I chose would be not very practical:) a very high heeled leather shoe. Lovely event.

  17. I’m starting to worry. Kate has had a lot of unannounced engagements lately. Everyone is talking about security for the Sussexes, but I’m starting to think there’s been a credible threat against Kate. Why wouldn’t they announce these visits otherwise? William’s engagements have all been announced well in advance.
I also thought maybe pregnancy, but with HG Kate can’t hide it like other women could for the first trimester.

    1. Well William and Kate had a couple of embargoed engagments before and it's due to security reasons. I don't think Kate is pregnant honestly, I just think Kate was just busy these past fee days with private engagements, meetings, preparing for a big tour, and also raising her 3 kids. Even if Kate was pregnant I think we need to wait until the Palace actually confirms it.

    2. I seem to remember reading a while back that unannounced engagements are to make it easier on the place where she is visiting. The people who show up know she's coming but the place isn't overwhelmed with lots of people coming to the area just to see the Royal visitor.

      Delete
    3. It could be due to security concerns but I think it is more likely that the increase in unannounced visits has got to do with the types of engagements she has been doing recently.
In the beginning and especially when they were staying in Norfolk, she had few, but big engagements. So they publicized them widely to get maximum impact.
Now she is doing more of the run of the mill royal visits that isn’t really about publicity but more about meeting the people working there, showing them that their work is appreciated. There is no need for advanced notice of these events (and even if there is no security threat not giving advance noticeust make security easier).

  18. I love that her outfit doesn't break the bank, would not look out of place at any office, but is still dressy and respectful to Sunshine House. Our thrifty Kate never disappoints! She can make a £30 pair of Zara pants look like a million bucks! I'm one of those that is resisting the culottes / wide pants trend but Kate makes it look so effortless and chic I may or may not pop into my local Zara to try them on for myself ;)

  19. I posted earlier when there were no posts. Perhaps it got lost? In any event, I love that Kate is on trend. She has the perfect figure for the high wasted and full cropped pants. Her stacked heels are perfect in creating balance with the width of her slacks.

  20. What a good cause. I think Kate has chosen wonderful charities and her passion shines through always!

  21. Ooh I like this look. The cropped wide leg pants are very in fashion right now and they're more flattering than the baggy wide leg pants she's worn in previous engagements. I also really like the fact that her blouse has no fussy bow or Peter Pan collar, and even has a slight V-neck opening. She also looks dressed appropriately for the occasion -- not too dressy, sort of a modern professional look.

One thing -- did Kate always talk with her hands so much? I've noticed that in recent engagements she does more "hand talking." It's okay -- I do it too. But I remember the days when she held her hands closely to her front with a clutch and just don't remember her talking with her hands as much. But this is a good engagement. I've said this before but kids really, really seem to take to her and that's not a quality many people have.

    1. I like this look on Kate and I can appreciate what FNP is doing. I cannot imagine trying to be a parent for the first time without lots of support around you.
I think Kate does tend to talk with her hands more when not holding a clutch or purse. I think too it is ok. What impresses me tho about Kate and the whole Royal Family is their ability to make small talk with so many people and to be engaged with each person they meet. I would find that very exhausting!

      Delete
    2. Kate has always been a hand-talker but I think her gestures have become bigger and more expressive as she gained confidence. And maybe she doesn’t feel like she is making small talk but actually contribute to the conversation.

  22. Like the smart look with the trousers, though I might have preferred the blouse in another colour: black is a little drab. Here, Kate's hair looks more like it did when she appeared at her children's school (Charlotte's first day), yet her hair appeared longer again at Wisley: difficult to fathom!

  23. I love Kate’s outfit today. These culottes are more flattering on her than previous ones she’s worn because of the high waist. It minimizes her long waist and doesn’t make her legs look proportionally short as the others did.

  24. Lovely post, Charlotte, as always! Thank you!
I did like this look today... until I saw that her pants were wide-legged and hit above her ankle. I can't put on my finger on what it is, exactly, but there's something about the look that seems rather unfinished, to me. Of course, this is all a matter of personal taste!
It's wonderful to see how involved Kate is during this engagement, as she always is when interacting with other people. I think this is a fantastic cause and can only imagine how many unfortunate happenings this visiting nurse service has prevented.
Many of us would be surprised to learn that there are people out there with no idea how to care for a child, let alone a newborn child! What a wonderful idea to assign educated nurses to young mothers to guide them and assist them with the care of their most precious assets!
Finally, Charlotte, a question for you: It would be such fun to scroll through the old posts on this blog and look at posts from 5-6 years ago. Is there a feature on this blog that would allow me to navigate through the archives?
    Thank you!

  28. I do love Catherine’s dedication to caring for children and helping families build a strong foundation for their children. When she spoke at the forum, she spoke of looking to projects that have generational impact, and her work with the early years, the back to nature garden, and mental health definitely fit the bill. I love how she comes across as so engaged, knowledgeable in her own right but ready to listen to and encourage those around her. It’s lovely to see how at ease people seem around her—and especially children. They are such astute judges of character! I love to see the work she is doing to strengthen children and families.

I was so glad, too, to see the results of the Blue Peter contest! I have to admit I was wondering what happened with that when she attended the opening of the garden and no mention was made. What a lovely sculpture! A beautiful opportunity to encourage talent and form connections with nature. Jessica has a lovely plan, and it must be so amazing to see it come to life like that!

I do so like the direction Kate is going with her work.
