All Aboard For The RRS David Attenborough Ship Naming Ceremony

It was an afternoon in Birkenhead for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for the naming ceremony of the UK’s new polar research ship, the RRS Sir David Attenborough.

The Duchess arriving.

The appearance follows news William and Kate will undertake an official visit to Pakistan from 14-18 October.

I simply cannot think of a better name than the RRS Sir David Attenborough. It's rather perfect isn't it? Yet you may be surprised (or not if you're living in the UK) to learn it wasn't the first choice. There was quite the debate about naming the ship Boaty McBoatface. Where did that little gem come from you may ask. It all began when the National Environmental Research Council asked the public to choose a name for the £200 million research ship. The choice left senior officials ashen-faced and they elected to honour one of the country's living legends instead. RRS David Attenborough received the fourth highest votes, with RRS It's Bloody Cold Here just four hundred votes behind in fifth place. Tenth place went to RRS I Like Big Boats And I Cannot Lie.

More from The Telegraph:

'But as a nod to the democratic process they allowed silliness to prevail by preserving the name for a remotely operated submersible.
Boaty will travel with the DynOPO (Dynamics of the Orkney Passage Outflow) expedition on the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) research ship James Clark Ross, departing from Punta Arenas in Chile on Friday.
The craft will be sent back and forth through a cold abyssal current that forms an important part of the global circulation of ocean water.'

Kate views Boaty McBoatface.

One of Britain's national treasures, Sir David Attenborough has been a groundbreaking force with his environmental work and his documentaries; the Life series, which collectively constitute a survey of plant and animal life on earth. If you haven't seen it, I cannot recommend it highly enough. It's not only thought provoking and educating it's a visual masterpiece. It's available on Amazon. The natural historian recently collaborated with Netflix for a new eight-part series called Our Planet, which is top of my list one of these weekends. You might recall Charles, William and Harry attended the premiere. Have any of you seen it yet? The naturalist famously said: "I just wish the world was twice as big and half of it was still unexplored."

Sir David's connections with the royal family are many. We've seen the Duchess with him on numerous occasions in her role as patron of the Natural History Museum. During the opening of Hintze Hall, Kate quoted him in a speech in reference to the importance of experiencing the natural world: "Sir David Attenborough has famously talked about the fact that people will not protect what they don’t first care about, and will not care about what they have never experienced."

Kensington Palace said the ship "will enable world-leading research to be carried out in Antarctica and the Arctic over the next 25 to 30 years. Studying these remote regions plays a crucial role in allowing us to understand the changes in our planet’s oceans, marine life and climate systems. The ship will be available year-round to the UK’s research community."

William and Kate spent time with a team from Cammell Laird who have been involved in the ship’s build, including young apprentices. Founded in Birkenhead in 1828, Cammell Laird specialises in ship building, repair, refit and conversion as well as providing engineering services to the energy sector. They visited scientists who showcased state-of-the art equipment which is used to carry out research whilst at sea and in Antarctica. The Duke and Duchess also met schoolchildren involved in BAS’s ‘Polar Explorer’ programme, which encourages and supports schools to enrich their teaching of STEM subjects by educating pupils about polar science and the ship’s future expeditions.

During a speech, Prince William said:

'We are of course here to celebrate a true British marvel.
One that is strong, sturdy, and incredibly well engineered that deepens our understanding of the impact our behaviour has on the world around us, and arms us with the facts to do something about it, an icon capable of feats not seen before and potentially never seen again. And no – I’m not talking about you David. Those words wouldn’t do you and your lifetime’s work justice!
I’m referring to the hugely impressive ship behind us, named in your honour, that Catherine and I have just had the pleasure of looking around. The RRS Sir David Attenborough is a testament to the cutting-edge science and engineering expertise right here on Merseyside. It is also a testament to the UK’s world-leading role on polar research.
Through this state-art-of-the-art new ship, the British Antarctic Survey will help to expand global knowledge of the polar oceans, and the impact of climate change on this crucial region.
As last week’s climate protests the world over, and yesterday’s report on our oceans and frozen regions demonstrated, there has never been a more important moment for this ship to get to work. And there is no person more fitting for this beacon of scientific research to be named after than you, David. You have shown us how awe-inspiring the natural world is, and also how fragile and endangered it is. And you have inspired us all to do as much as we possibly can to protect it.
It is my immense privilege and relief to welcome Sir David Attenborough, rather than Boaty McBoatface, to speak.'

More from the Mail Online:

'Addressing crowds who had come to see the ship, Sir David said: 'It's no news to any of you that the world is facing great, great problems and the most aware of that are the young people of today, who will inherit this world. Great problems require great research and facts in order to solve them.
That's what this astonishing ship will be here to do, to find out the facts and find the science with which to deal with problems that are facing the world today and will increasingly do so tomorrow. There could be no more important function for any ship, anywhere in the world, than those which are going to be dealt with by this remarkable ship, at the cutting edge of science.' He said it is the 'greatest possible honour' that the ship carries his name.'

As the ship’s sponsor, the Duchess formally christened the ship and a bottle of champagne was smashed against the hull.

Kate said: "It gives me great pleasure to name this ship Sir David Attenborough and may God bless her and all who sail in her".

William and Kate met well-wishers.

The Duchess received flowers from children dressed as penguins :)

It is Kate's second ship naming. In 2013, when she was expecting Prince George, she christened Royal Princess in Margate.

The Duchess brought back her favourite cornflower blue Alexander McQueen coat with large pockets. It marked the fourth outing for the garment previously worn in Blenheim, New Zealand during the royal tour 2014, and chosen two months later for 70th anniversary D-Day commemorations in Normandy. The Duchess also selected it for an RAF 75th anniversary event in 2016.

Kate wore her Emmy London Josie Nany block heel pointed court shoes.

Susan from What Kate Wore noted the Duchess carried the Asprey London Pochette Blueberry Bullskin bag. It retails for $1194 on Asprey's website.

Kate accessorised with her Mappin & Webb Empress earrings.

In other royal news today, congratulations to Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi who announced their engagement today. The couple who began dating last autumn said: “We are extremely happy to be able to share the news of our recent engagement. We are both so excited to be embarking on this life adventure together and can’t wait to be married. We share so many similar interests and values and we know this will stand us in great stead for the years ahead, full of love and happiness.”

Beatrice's ring was designed by jeweller Shaun Leane who worked closely with Edoardo. The wedding will take place at some point next year. Another page boy and bridesmaid outing for George and Charlotte.

In other news, the Court Circular notes Kate attended an early years meeting and a Royal Foundation reception this week. We'll see the Cambridges on Wednesday for a pre-tour event hosted by His Highness The Aga Khan at the Aga Khan Centre. Organised in cooperation with the High Commission of Pakistan, the event will showcase modern Pakistani culture.

  6. What an excellent outing! My first thought, though, was "Oh no! Those SHOES!!" Kate looks unbelievable, but I'm just not a fan of the heavier shoe and heel. But I will admit that I bet that they were appropriate for touring a ship.

  10. I absolutely love that HRH re-wears her clothes. This particular piece is one of my favorite coat dresses of hers. I know many people always say that she always wears similar items but I think the main reason she sticks with these silhouettes is because they are timeless pieces that she can keep reusing yet still look up to date and polished.

Charlotte, thank you so much for sharing this powerful quote again. "Sir David Attenborough has famously talked about the fact that people will not protect what they don’t first care about, and will not care about what they have never experienced." That can be applied to so many things outside of conservation as well. The DoC looks as lovely as ever. These types of royal engagements always make me smile and have a very nostalgic feel.

  15. How fitting that this boat is named after Sir David Attenborough, a man whose passion has been his life's work. Huge fan of David Attenborough and his programs on BBC and National Geographic. William's speech was excellent, and so glad Kate named the boat and gave the blessing "God bless her and all who sail in her."

Kate is lovely and the coat a perfect repeat for this engagement. LOVE her shoes and bag, I always have trouble finding nice 'navy' accessories and this bag is perfect as a clutch and a crossbody. Love the look on Kate's face in three of the photos, the one where she is looking at William, the one where she is christening the boat, and the third where she is "squinching" her face....quintessential happy Kate!! cc

  16. Kate looks lovely, classic and regal as always. I love her style. She is always dressed for the occasion. It is a working Royal wardrobe befitting the position she holds and her fashion does not become the focus of the event. The attention at many events should be on the cause and charity work presented and not simply on what Kate is wearing. She understands this and is always demure.

  17. Sir David Attenborough has been my lifelong hero and seeing Life on Earth when it was first shown on the BBC inspired me to become a marine biologist. So it was great to see Kate & William christen this important research vessel named in his honour (and you have to love our British sense of humour in choosing the funny names that actually topped the poll, glad Boaty McBoatface made it somewhere)! 2. Anonymous 19:10, Annie, if you haven't already done so, do write Sir David a note to tell him that he inspired you to become a marine biologist. As a teacher I am thrilled when former students tell me years later, how I influenced them. You could congratulate Sir David on the honour of the boat name and also tell him he is your hero. I guarantee that it will make his day.

    3. I love the British sense of humour, also :) But glad the senior officials were sensible in naming the vessel after a British icon!

  18. I am not a fan of this coat, but it is a solid look for this type of engagement.
I am just interested why she isn’t wearing a hat? The previous time she was a sponsor for a boat was one of the few non-religious, non-queen-adjacent events that she has worn a hat for.

  21. Great job keeping up with all the engagements happening, Charlotte! I think Kate looks beautiful today. I love it when she smiles and it wrinkles her nose. The coat is obviously a favorite of hers, and it looks great on her. I like the chunkier heels, especially walking around a ship.

I am hoping little Louis makes his pageboy debut at Beatrice's wedding. Maybe all three Cambridge children will be on duty that day. I am going to agree with Anonymous 19:52's prediction that Meghan and Eugenie will be pregnant!

  22. One of her work styles that will stand the test of time. It's flattering to her shape, and is entirely appropriate. Eventually she'll probably chose a "uniform", much as Queen Elizabeth has done. She will be Queen Consort one day, so it makes sense. My favorite shade of blue, and the wide heel is safer on the day. The Dalmatian dress makes me smile, I thought it was one of her best maternity looks.
Happy news for Princess Beatrice; and the six figure ring suggests she is marrying well, in addition to their reported joy in each other.

    2. I agree on all acounts. The dalmatian dress was such a bold choice. Most would have looked ridicoulus but she just nailed it.
@Charlotte: maybe you could do not just a yearly poll but maybe an all-time overview about her coats (evening/daytime dresses...). It would be interesting to see which ones were repated and how often and which ones she never wore again. And I am intrigued which ones are the most popular amongst us. Obviously that is lot of work, but it could be a nice filler for the next time when they are on holiday break.

love this coat!! great color on her. I love those shoes, but I love a more chunky heel, so much easier to walk and balance on uneven surfaces, and it looked like gravel on the approach? Those are my favorite earing's of hers as well! great new clutch:) I guess im just loving it! lol

Could not think of a more deserving name for the new ship and love that boaty mcboatface made it on the submersible. :)

so happy for PB. I agree with anon 19:52 - hoping both PE and the DoS (fingers crossed) will be pregnant by then. so much to look forward too, a great time to be a BRF watcher!! Thanks charlotte for all your awesome coverage here and at MaM:)

  26. Great post, Charlotte. What a busy week for you!
I had the wonderful pleasure of meeting Sir David Attenborough through work back in the mid1980s. He was humble, charismatic, and clear in his concern for wildlife and the environment. I'm so glad there is now a research ship named after him.
(Love the British humor, though. Boaty?!)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Boaty McBoatface??! I read a piece a long, long time ago about how humor rarely is successful in crossing cultural borders and I think this is a great example. I got caught myself one New Year's Eve when crossing the Channel with my mother and sister, and in the lounge of the ferry a television was broadcasting American cartoons from the early 1960s (Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Road Runner, Wile E. Coyote, etc.). My sister and I couldn't help starting to giggle, but those of you who know, know that this humor is rooted in over-the-top violence, and the mothers of children were soon herding their little ones away and casting very nasty looks at us. We clamped our hands over our mouths and went out on deck to burst out laughing. I AM glad that the submersible got the silly name, and not the research vessel.

    1. Marci Andy, I have lived in Canada since I was a child, but my parents were very British, having immigrated with their young family. So I grew up understanding the British sense of humour, also what Canadians found funny. I agree with you that humour doesn't always transfer the cultural borders. FYI: There was an Australian racehorse called, Horsey McHorseface. There is also a train is Sweden called Trainey McTrainface and Shropshire Council named a gritter (salt truck) Gritty McGritface, while a Southend-on-Sea Borough Council named a skate park Skatey McSkateface.

  28. Very nice engagement for both William and Kate. Sir David must have been delighted, too. The coat is growing on me and I am happy she puts it in good use. I might have a silly question but...is there any specific reason for calling the ship "her" ?

It is one of those things that was drilled into us in primary school, because it doesn’t translate to Afrikaans, where ships are male.

  29. Can I just say that I am a bit weirded out about those pregancy comments? They read as people are more excited about their own entetainment than what those couples want. I hope any of them are able to have the families they want to, be it with our without children. Those children are surely not here for our entertainment and I think Meghan and Harry try to make it very clear that their child is not a show horse for the public (even though I very much question how they go on about it, but the I applaud the sentiment. And Wiliam and Kate try to limit public access a lot too. Hopefully Beatrice and Eugenie can have as much privacy as they wish for their future children- if they even want some (which we frankly have no clue about).
Don't get me wrong- I also dive in the excitment when they announce, love to discuss maternity outfit choices, baby names etc. But hoping for a pregnancy if I have no clue if someone even wants kids is pretty strange in my opinion.

I am so thrilled for Princess Beatrice. Her fiance is very handsome. I wish people would be more modern and not put them down because he has a child from a previous relationship it is 2019 not 1919.

    1. It’s not because of having a child but because of the way his relationship with the mother of that child ended, I think.

      Delete
    2. Is he being put down? I suppose it is because it is implied his past could indicate he is the kind of person that is not faithful. Also, we talk a lot about perjudice against women, but when a man is as handsome as he is, it seems to follow that he cannot be trusted! Beatrice parents called him loyal, which I think was a way to counter those rumors. I am sure they will have a long and happy life together.

  35. A question about who greets who first. I have noticed that the Duke always goes first and then the Duchess for the Cambridges. It’s the opposite for the Sussexes. Is there a protocol on this? Just curious.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Non blood royals never greet first. It’s not a question of male or female, PP or Daniel from Sweden always greet after their spouses. However, when the C are meeting someone related to one of Kate’s patronages, for example, she always goes first.

      Delete
  36. Annette New Zealand29 September 2019 at 05:38

The protocol is that the most senior Royal goes first when greeting people. The opposite applies when arriving at a function and the Queen always arrives last, with weddings being an exception of course. Then the bride is last.
