The Cambridges Celebrate Shout Volunteers

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge attended Shout’s Crisis Volunteer celebration event at the Troubadour White City Theatre.

William and Kate were welcomed upon arrival.

Kensington Palace notes: "Shout operates 24/7 and connects people in need to trained volunteers who provide help at a time when it is most needed; enabling them to move from a moment of crisis to a calm state and form a plan for next steps to find longer-term support. As texting is private and silent, it opens up a whole new way to find help.  It provides instant support - you can have a conversation at any time – at school, at home, on the bus, anywhere. This service is for everyone, but for younger people especially, texting is a trusted and familiar form of communication, and using text rather than apps makes it simple and accessible for everyone with a phone."

The new text messaging line was launched in May as a lasting legacy to the Heads Together campaign. It is a joint collaboration between William, Kate, Harry and Meghan. The team at the Royal Foundation contacted Crisis Text Line in the US to begin the process of bringing their successful model to the UK. It is the Foundation's largest initiative to date with £3 million invested.

Following the release, Prince William said: "At the heart of this service will be an incredible national volunteer community, one which needs to grow to allow us to support more people in crisis. We hope that many more of you will join us and be part of something very special."

The celebration of volunteers appears to be an annual November event. Last year, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined a group to hear firsthand about their motivation for joining the fledgling service. I expect we'll see William and Kate and Harry and Meghan alternate attending - similar to the Royal Variety Performance.

Shout has already proven it's a successful and much needed source of support. It was fantastic to hear 85258 Crisis Volunteers have had 145,000 conversations via text with people in crisis, exchanging 6 million messages.

Especially when we consider young people and teenagers, the option to text privately is often far more appealing, offering a safe, confidential space to share issues they may not necessarily feel comfortable doing so otherwise.

Volunteers simply log in from their home computer during their shifts, so the reception was a wonderful opportunity for them to come together and share stories.

William and Kate met those who answered the public appeal to volunteer with the service. An amazing 13,000 people registered an interest with Shout following the appeal and 3,000 enrolled in training. William previously revealed he was planning to train as a volunteer.

Victoria Murphy reports:

'Nancy Lublin, the Founder of Crisis Text Line in the U.S., told T&C that she was “so grateful” for how the royals have highlighted the service publicly and shared how they have also engaged in under-the-radar visits.
“They have been into our offices, I think, four times, at this point in time, quietly without anyone knowing,” Lublin said about the four young royals.'

Roya Nikkhah reports: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge continue to lend their support to the family of Molly Russell, who took her own life at 14 after viewing images of self-harm on social media. Today William and Kate spoke with Molly’s father, Ian, William telling him: “If we can help you in any way, please let us know".

More from Town & Country:

“After Molly’s death, like so many parents who find themselves bereaved by suicide, we set up a memorial charity in her name,” Russell told T&C. “One of our aims is to better connect young people who need help with the support services that are there to help them. And I can’t think of a better way of doing it than the way Shout does it."
He added: "Of course I wonder had it been available in the U.K. when Molly was desperately seeking help in 2017 maybe she would be here today.”

Kensington Palace said: "During the visit, the Duke and Duchess received a brief update on the scale and impact of Shout. Their Royal Highnesses heard that 75 per cent of people who contact Shout are under 25, and that the most frequent subjects raised in those conversations are suicide (37 per cent), depression (36 per cent), relationships (29 per cent), anxiety (31 per cent), isolation (19 per cent) and self-harm (17 per cent)."

During a brief speech William said: “Catherine and I, and Harry and Meghan couldn’t be more proud of what Shout has accomplished. We’re hugely proud and hugely grateful to all of you for being part of this.”

They joined volunteers in the theatre for a special performance before a group photo.

A video from the event.

Kate opted for a smart casual look today featuring her grey Smythe blazer, burgundy red trousers and block heel shoes. I think the combination of the grey and red work very well together, they are not two pieces I would have automatically put together, but the entire look has a professional feel to it and the shades are perfect for the current season. As we see Kate wear trousers more, it's interesting to see her preferred styling options. Today's is a favourite of mine, owing to the polished cut of the trousers (there's a matching blazer available for them, I hope Kate purchased it for a chic suiting look).

Kate debuted the Smythe 2 Button blazer for a Coach Core event last October.

The glen check/black corduroy, tailored, single-breasted silhouette has a traditional riding blazer feel, featuring a contrast collar, flattering pocket flaps and oversized leather buttons.

Kate's trousers are the Joseph Zoom Cady Slim Pants (with thanks to Caroline Parr). Described as "The slim-fitting Zoom pants from Joseph will anchor an array of looks, from day to night. Presented in a ruby hue, this Italian-made design is shaped with a mid-rise fit and falls into straight legs that slightly taper toward the ankle." They are currently on sale for £241 at My Theresa and available at FarFetch.

The Duchess wore her Gianvito Rossi Piper 85 pumps.

And accessorised with her Mappin & Webb earrings and pendant.

An overview of Kate's schedule including two evening gown appearances next week:

15 November - The Duchess of Cambridge, Royal Patron of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, will visit the charity’s new hospice ‘The Nook’ on Friday 15th November to meet children and families being supported by EACH, tour the hospice, and unveil a plaque to officially open the building.
18 November - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend the Royal Variety Performance at the Palladium Theatre, London, held in aid of the Royal Variety Charity.
21 November - The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will attend the Tusk awards.

No it isn't of Harry and Meghan.

    2. When I first looked at the post the thumbnail was of Harry and Meghan and when I clicked into the article the only picture that would show up was of was of H and M last year. I assumed this was some technical glitch and when I tried a few minutes later the issue was corrected.
Anon 13:57- maybe next time wait a minute before jumping to conclusions. Charlotte is doing her absolute best to bring us all the info. Stuff happens some times!

    3. Obviously a glitch but as a diehard Meghan fan, I welcome other royals on her blog page. I saw an article today showing how Kate and Meghan have worn similar items -- boatneck collar, one-strap dresses, "low-cut: dresses, and on and on, and I found it very enjoyable. Also saw Princess Diana wearing a hat very similar to the one Meghan wore on Sunday, and I enjoy seeing when Kate is similar to Diana, such as on their recent tour.

BTW, I LOVE these pants on Kate!!! They're tight enough without being skin tight, and she looks just perfect. Love the shoes, too.

  18. Hi Charlotte, I think there is a problem with the pictures, they are not shown!

  19. She looks wonderful. There was a time when royal ladies did not wear pants, when they walked behind the man, when they didn't mention mental health -- another example of how times have changed for the better. I don't think William or Harry would like to walk in front of their wives if they can help it.

It's a great outfit, and I love that it can be replicated so easily. I enjoy their fabulous clothes, but I really enjoy when they inspire outfits that we can afford, although perhaps by different brands.

The necklace is very pretty with the matching earrings, too.

Is the actual photo of her today missing? :)

    1. Allison, its funny you speak about William or Harry walking in front of their wives. Generally William walks a few steps ahead of Kate and is the first to greet when they're together, but in a video online of William and Kate arriving, for the first time you see Kate walking in front of William! She shakes hands with the first gentleman before William, but then lets him shake hands and continue first. It was all done so smoothly, like they seem to have it all down between the two of them. While it was unusual to see, made me smile because it showed a confident Kate. cc

    2. I noticed that Harry seems to be moving Meghan first lately, and it looks very gentlemanly. I was happy to see William do it, and I agree that it shows confidence by Kate. As she speaks more and does more projects on her own, she should be first more. We all know who will be King, so in the interim 20 or so years, showing this "women first" courtesy will go a long way to influence viewers. I'm sure he does it in private. Yay william!

  22. How perfect Kate and William look for this event! Their clothes are smart and business like but also approachable. I am in awe of the care they take to hit the right note at events when their appearances are setting a tone since so few of the people who actually see them at events have the chance to interact directly with them. Also, I just want to acknowledge how well William spoke extemporaneously. He covered a lot of material in a well organized manner and seemed very comfortable doing it. This is so different from when he is referring to notes or reading a speech. Thank you for a great post, Charlotte. I especially loved that video. AnneHH

  24. Glad to hear that Shout is providing a much needed service so effectively for this vital age group. Also nice to see that the Cambridges and Sussexes continue to work on mental health issues together. Kate looks smashing. I think Glen or any Black/Grey/White tweed/check always look good together, and I think this burgandish red looks particularly nice. During the suit decade, it was a very popular combination.

Love that she paired the trousers with the jacket (a favorite), and hope that this makes many very happy about her trouser choice!! Like Charlotte, I also hope Kate has the blazer to these trousers, Kate's pretty good about mixing up pieces for different looks. Great that Kate and William are supporting Shout which is a great extension of their successful Head's Together program and that it is reaching so many people. I appreciate when the speeches are included in the posts, I know I have said it 'ad nauseum' but William is an excellent speaker and love to listen to his speeches. cc

I hope I never have to use it, but it's a vital resource and I, too, wonder if Molly Russell would be alive today if this had existed when she was struggling.

I love this cause and both the Sussexes and Cambridges' commitment to this organization.

  39. This is an important cause for them to carry on, glad to see them looking relaxed, at each with each other, and happy to be there. I love, love, love, the pants and blazer combo but not the chunky block heeled pump with an ankle length pant. A shoe that makes Kate's ankles look thick, which they aren't.

  40. Love this look and it’s so refreshing to see her venture to more pants! Though I’m old fashioned and like the dresses but it’s nice that she spiced it up a bit! She looks fantastic! ❤️

  41. So chic and modern, Kate’s a young woman and looks even more relatable and accessible in trousers. Marvellous.

  42. The Duchess looks terrific in this outfit. I prefer these trousers, they fit well and suit her shape perfectly, excellent length, love the colour. Jacket is lovely, the cut is divine. Love the subtle addition of jewellery pieces, finishes the look off, she nailed it.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Love all three pieces but not together. I would like to see the pants in a longer length with the chunky shoe look. Flats would have made these pants look more on trend since they have a little flare at the bottom. The jacket looked best with the all black fashion statement or with a black shirt. The entire look is really dowdy and not at all chic and modern.

    1. Agree to disagree! 😀 I am Kate’s age and I see this look all the time. Either a patterned neutral blazer with solid pants in color or vice verses. And I have seen both flats and heels. Tends to vary base on personal preference. I do blazers a lot with dark jeans and flats(but only because I can’t wear heels).

    2. I'm with you Katie, I see this look all the time and worn by all different ages of women. While I personally prefer the jacket how Kate wore it at first with all black, I see more of the women in my office mixing their colors and prints, and wearing the on trend chunky heel and they look pretty modern and smart. In fact I had two young ladies copy my (old lady shorter heel) version of the clunky suede shoe to wear to work because 1) its very comfortable, 2) it's stylish and good for work, and 3) (in their words) they could save their higher heels for "clubbing".

Here's what I call my 'poor old woman's' version of Kate's shoes, affordable, stylish and practical: Gianni Bini Delancy Suede Block Heel Pumps - $89.00 at Dillards (USA).

so excited about this look. really like the blazer like this, wasn't such a fan the first time, looks better with her hair covering the black patches on the front. love the color of the pants and love the style. my only quibble is the pants need to be longer or the heels shorter, to much of gap between and they look like she is going clambing at high tide. love that she is branching out and I think after Pakistan she really got comfortable in this style of pant. as someone stated above and I agree, she does remind me of Qletizia and im all for that, she gives great trouser!! lol great cause and im glad that they continue to hi-light. love to see them together and how they are such a wonderful fit for each other. Thank you charlotte!!

one last note, I hope she does have the matching blazer and will wear it with some slim black pants in the future!!

That gap between the trousers and the shoes is what makes the whole look fashionable , otherwise it would, look sporty and not adapted to the situation , Caroline in Montana . Besides, block heels are a great choice , stilettos with trousers is a long past fashion ...

      Delete
    2. Caroline in Montana14 November 2019 at 15:38

Sorry Nicole from France, Its just my opinion that the gap is not fashionable. I believe it is ok for me to have an opinion.

      Delete
    3. I can believe that it's fashionable but it's hard to get used to when you spent your first 30 years of life trying to find pants that would not shrink and rise too high. Remember the trick in the 60s of sewing braid around the hem to make jeans longer?

      Delete
    4. Nicole is absolutely correct. The trousers hitting the ankle bone and the shoes make this look very en vogue.

  45. I am the outlier on this outfit. I loved the blazer when she wore it before but not with these pants. The colors are fine I just do not like the fit of the pants nor the proportions of the blazer with the pants. The blazer and top look nice, love that jewelry set and her hair looks gorgeous. Lovely event.

  46. I’m generally not a fan of Kate in pants-not because she doesn’t look lovely in them-but because it’s a boring look. I don’t think royal ladies should strive for office attire. They need to take it up a notch. Of course certain occasions require more casual outfits.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is a casual engagement where the goal isnt to look like a princess but to support an important cause. Sophie and Anne wear pants all the time for these typee of engagements.

      Delete
    2. For me Kate in pants is a sign of the change in her role and the type of engagements she does. When they were in Norfolk Kate’s engagements was few and far between and an event in her life as well as ours. And they therefore warranted special outfits. Since they have moved to London she is doing more run-of-the-mill events that are more about the people than photo-ops and front pages. And for these type of events stylish business is a perfect look.

      Delete
    3. While Kate looks gorgeous and
perfectly appropriate for the engagement, I agree with anonymous that office attire is a boring look. That's why I prefer Kate style to that of Letizia.

      Delete
    4. I also think it might reflect how Kate views herself. I think in the early years she wanted to look royal all the time and only wore fancy outfits. Now she might think of her role as no longer as "princessy" so her wardrobe to these engagements reflects that. She might think that when she shows up to this sort of charity people don't want to see a princess but a real person.

When you started your new blog with Meghan almost 3 years ago, I looked forward to reading your comments there as well. Working in the media myself, I know how incredibly difficult your job has become, I truly applaud you for your strength in continuing with 2 excellent blog forums that are virtually free from the angry and disgraceful commentary on other sites. I’m sure the tedious task of filtering through comments is arduous. I love both of your blogs for their researched and in-depth content regarding the events, the wonderful photos of our beautiful Duchesses, the fabulous descriptions of their fashion, and your “unbiased” comments and views. Your blog/s are now the only ones I read for 2 reasons: your content is the best, and the comments section is filtered and a safe zone for readers.
To read the comments of Anonymous 20:30 must absolutely flatten you, and it’s neither fair or true. I am sad you are subjected to such writings.
Ironically today is world “Kindness Day”, so in the spirit of the day, I thank you for your incredible blog, and the privilege of being part of this lovely community that you’ve created amongst the regular commentators. Your work is outstanding for both blogs ... and you deserve our praise and respect for the obvious long hours that you spend in putting together such beautiful work. I, too, have been on Charlotte's HRHDK blog for 8 years. It was like having my very own copy of Majesty magazine but one always focused on my favorite couple. Of course I like all the Royals (well except for Andrew now, at least until he steps forward and owns up to the Epstein friendship) but W & K are my specials. I was so deeply distressed about what happened with Diana that W & K were, and are, like a salve to my battered Royalist views. Although I keep my own amateur blog that details my physical and spiritual journeys, it is small beans compared to Charlotte's. I started it for my grandchildren, thinking that someday that will be how they will learn more about who I was and, to an extent, how I felt. My own grandparents and parents didn't leave any kind of journals, anything but a bunch of photographs, and I miss knowing more about their lives, why they made the decisions they did, how they felt.... But, honestly, it is so difficult to know what to write, what is better unsaid, how do I frame my feelings about life currently, about family history, or ought I to share it at all? I am in my late 60s and, as a Boomer, am of the first generation to "let it all hang out." But now as I approach my 70s I am starting to change, to move more towards the more polite, circumspect attitude of my Victorian and Silent Generation grandparents and parents. The way media is trying to mind control people appalls me and how people blether on as a result of some off-the-wall articles, quite pompously and nastily, about people they don't know! And societies they don't understand. Of course we have the right to our opinions but honestly sometimes the opinions are better kept to ourselves and we should just enjoy the role of spectators, not critics. So much nicer for those "sitting around us" in this blog. Still circumspection and silence vs waving the banner are still a tug of war for this Boomer as you can see because I am posting this morning :)

So I applaud you Charlotte for this blog, for your careful choosing of what to write, what not to, how much of your own personal feelings to reveal. W & K are my fairytale story, I am still that little girl who clipped photos out of Life and Majesty and put them in scrapbooks, and I enjoy that I can come here and mentally do that again ;)

I really liked this look today! The pop of color in the pants really made it seasonal. Loved it!

  51. I really like today's smart casual look. I think Kate has really grown with her role and William too.

  52. To me the length of the trousers were a bit odd with the chunky shoes, but I really like the overall look. I'm so glad we're not seeing jeggings much anymore except for something truly sporty like the yacht race or park/Scouts engagement, something like that. Her trousers not only look great on her, they are very polished and professional, yet a little less formal than a coat-dress.

Well , there we are , she wears trousers and she wears them in a modern fashionable way ! That mixing is absolutely perfect ( no I won’t say how much I dislike that tight fitting Catherine indulges in , that will be for another time ahaha) , burgundy /black/white , the Prince of Wales pattern (is that the way you call it in England?) of the blazer , looking young but not too much , very sleek and professional , not matronly nor traditional English .... I recently had the thought that she might sometimes be inspired by Meghan’s style .... I mean , she sees a completely différent way of considering clothes and fashion , and she might have thought she could give a try ....
she wears trousers and still, she has dignity and she still looks like a future queen ...

    1. So do you think that Kate had no friends or women surrounding her that wear trousers? She’s worn trousers, jeans and blazers several times before, can’t we just accept that she prefers dresses for whatever reason?

    2. Kate's been surrounded by lots of other women who have worn trousers and blazers, her mother and her sister come to mind. This look is a nice venture from her usual style, but believe like Anon that Kate prefers dresses and I for one am not sorry she does. She can and should mix it up every now and again, but I like Kate's preference for dresses....its her signature.

    3. Anon, while Kate has always worn pants in her private time, it is definitely a new addition to her royal wardrobe this year - as is the floral midi dresses she wore this summer - and while there is probably not one single reason why she decided to add pants to her royal wardrobe I kinda like Nicole’s idea that she looked at some of Meghan’s outfits and thought, that really works, I should try it.
Kate’s looks have inspired a generation of women, why shouldn’t she sometimes get inspired by somebody else?

  55. There is a place for Kate to be the princess, and she does it well. There are places for her to be "visiting royalty," and she does that well. And there are times where she wants to help people, and she is doing that well. She is dressing like "regular" people and is showing that she has a family member with mental health issues, her husband and brother-in-law have issues with their mother's death, and I'm sure there are more issues like everyone has. What's really nice is that Kate and William seem happy with their positions as future king/queen consort. But don't forget there may be 20 or more years before this happens!

Off topic, but I have been wondering about something. If Charles finances his two sons' lives, when he becomes king and William is the Prince of Wales, will William finance H&M? Do you think that will rather an automatic thing, so that it doesn't affect their relationship?

    1. When Charles becomes King, he will finance the working royals Harry included, using the sovereign grant. William will have the duchy of Cornwall for himself and his family. Charles doesn't finance Andrew or Anne, the Queen does. William won't finance Harry until he is King, and then only if Harry is still a working royal

  56. Awesome what is happening with the support network. Thanks, Charlotte for the updates on this program. The Duchess of Cambridge looks more youthful, chic in this ensemble. I like it.
