Patron Kate Enjoys Festive Fun With Family Action

It was an afternoon of festive fun as the Duchess of Cambridge joined a group of children supported by Family Action at Peterley Manor Farm in the village of Great Missenden in the Chiltern Hills in Buckinghamshire.

The Duchess arriving.

The engagement coincided with news the Queen has passed her patronage of Family Action to her granddaughter-in-law after 66 years in the role. The organisation is steeped in family history. Before the Queen became patron, her grandmother Queen Mary officially supported the organisation. It's terrific to see another royal carrying on the tradition. Perhaps someday, long in the future, we'll see one of Kate and William's children working with them.

Family Action, which celebrated 150 years in 2019, supports vulnerable children and families through some 150 local and national services, as well as supporting professionals and organisations through training and consultancy. They currently work directly with over 45,000 families. Kate first visited the charity in 2017 and again in January to launch their new national support line. At the time, I noted it would make a great future patronage. I imagine the handover has been in the planning for some time.

In a statement, Kensington Palace said: "The Duchess of Cambridge has spent much of the last eight years meeting charities and organisations who work every day to make our families and communities stronger. There is a powerful correlation between a parent or carer’s wellbeing and their child’s development, which is why organisations such as Family Action that provide support are instrumental to a child’s future. This new patronage aligns with Her Royal Highness’ longstanding work on the early years, and the importance of supporting children and families during this seminal period of their lives."

Chair of trustees at Family Action Mary Fallon said:

'On behalf of the Board of Trustees and everyone at Family Action, I am delighted to announce that Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Cambridge will become Royal Patron of Family Action in our 150th Anniversary year. The Duchess will assume the Royal Patronage of the charity from Her Majesty The Queen who has held the role for 66 years, having assumed the role in turn from Queen Mary in 1953.
We would like to extend our most sincere thanks to Her Majesty for her steadfast and dedicated support for the work of the Charity over so many years. Family Action was founded in 1869 to help disadvantaged families in difficulty to move forward by giving them practical help and support.
Today, Family Action continues to tackle difficult issues facing families – including financial hardship, mental health and emotional wellbeing, social isolation, parenting challenges, domestic abuse, and substance misuse. These issues can have a huge impact on the stability of family life as well as on the health and wellbeing of all family members.
We are honoured that The Duchess has chosen to support Family Action’s work by becoming our Royal Patron. Her keen interest particularly in the Early Years fits well with Family Action’s provision of high quality perinatal mental health services, pre-schools and Children’s Centres across the country. Family Action looks forward to working with The Duchess in the years to come.'

There is an excellent timeline of events charting the history of the organisation here. There's also a YouTube video available here, with experts and speakers chronicling the issues which brought about the organisation and its role today.

During the visit Kate helped the children pick out Christmas trees for their schools.

Joined by an eager group of little helpers, it was time to get to work.

Kate asked them to choose their favourites. This one got a thumbs up from Kate.

Kate was very much in the spirit of it and started carrying the trees out. Simon Perry said Peterley Manor Farm owner Roger Brill joked "I will have to give her job at the weekend".

Hello Magazine shared more from the engagement:

'It was while she was in an Elf Workshop with several children, that little Freddie leant in to get his photo taken by a photographer, who had just joined them. Kate couldn't help but giggle as she chatted away to the children, asking them what they wanted for Christmas. When one little'un responded that he wanted a dinosaur, she sweetly asked: "Which one, a diplodocus or a T-rex?"
Kate then spoke with another three children about Christmas, asking: "How tall is your Christmas tree?" Hilariously, one child threw his hands above his head to demonstrate just how tall his tree was. Moving outside, the children pretended to feed wooden reindeers and Kate helped them put ribbons on the Christmas trees that they liked most.'

The group spent time in the "Elves Enchanted Forest" making decorations and hot chocolates.

Time for Reindeer Food making.

Roya Nikkhah reports Kate told the children George "loves thistles", adding they have a Nordmann Fir non-drop Christmas tree at Anmer Hall. She also said Louis "wants to go everywhere" with her. Roya said the Duchess spoke to parents separately about pressures at this time of year "Maybe instead of posting on social media about who has the bigger presents, tell people about the real meaning of Christmas instead."
People reports:

'David Holmes, the chief executive of Family Action and a member of the Early Years steering group set up by Kate to advise on way forwards in the sector, told PEOPLE that Kate was “lovely” during Wednesday’s outing.
“I have worked with her on the early years for some time,” he says. “But she is fantastic with children and is also really interested in the issues — she’s really interested in families and parenting, and it really shines through everything she does.”
Holmes noted that Kate has brought her own experience as a mother of three to her work. “Everyone who’s a parent has their own experience, but equally it’s about understanding that other peoples’ experience is different and that parenting experience changes daily,” he notes. “And it’s that understanding about what it takes to be a parent.”

After finishing their letters to Father Christmas, Kate helped post them to the North Pole :)
The Duchess was festive in a casual red and green outfit for the visit.

Kate brought back her Perfect Moment Mini Duvet Quilted Ski Jacket. The $450 jacket is cut from mid-weight durable Airtastic EX shell, it's padded with insulating down, has a protective high neck and is finished with soft ribbed cuffs to lock in warmth. It features distinctive navy elbow patches.

Kate first wore the jacket for a Heads Together run in 2017.

It appears Kate's emerald green ribbed crew neck jumper is by Really Wild Clothing (with thanks to Pop Golightly).

Kate accessorised with a pair of hoop earrings.

And wore her Berghaus Supalite Gortex boots with forest green boot socks.

The Duchess also wore a pair of skinny jeans. It looked like a fabulous visit for all involved and a splendid new addition to Kate's patronages.

Kate was not the only Middleton lady focused on Christmas trees today. Party Pieces shared a photo of Carole dressing the office tree with the caption "Working next door to a Christmas Tree farm means we had the pick of the best Xmas trees!"

We'll see Kate next Wednesday night for the (tiara filled) Diplomatic Reception.

  1. Two solo engagements from Kate, and she excels! She has grown in confidence over the years, and is well on her way to becoming a respected queen. The trust in Kate shown by Her Majesty says as much.

  5. A reader was just asking for a holiday event! And it again occurs to me how much more work will be put on Kate and William now and later -- with the Queen probably retiring and fewer RF participating, with no new younger royals taking their places, it will be a lot for W&K and H&M. And if H&M are handling the Commonwealth, there's a lot of territory to cover for W&K.

  6. Love, love, love Kate's fashion statement today. She looks like every women out tramping through a Christmas Tree farm or walking down the city streets to find the corner with all the trees ready to take home to be decorated.

  7. Omg as it happens I am wearing almost the exact same outfit today -- I am wearing a red puffy down jacket, a green sweater, blue skinny jeans and winter boots. So across the pond Kate is actually my twin today. (Of course I'm a lot shorter and not as pretty but ...) I have a feeling this might actually be an everyday off-duty outfit for Kate. And what a great engagement. She's certainly doing her best to keep public goodwill towards the royal family after Andrew's disastrous BBC interview.

  10. Allison in US, I saw the comment on the previous thread about more holiday events. We are a greedy lot aren't we ;) But I get so excited when I see her out and about with her beautiful smile, especially at events with children. Some of the photos out on the Net today of her walking and holding hands with a little one and head to head with a little girl are like my favorite Christmas candy. And I admit that I also checked out what William is doing in Oman and he is charming people there too, whether it is at a school playing basketball (he is heads taller than most adults there!), trying to figure out DNA in a microscope at a lab or helping fishermen mend their nets. Looking forward to the New Year with W & K and also H & M's return for more uplifting events. Heaven knows we need uplifting news here in the U.S.!!

    1. Valerie and Allison, I plead guilty for being greedy for X-mas engagements! This one was perfect but still left me wanting for a few more, lol. I agree that some uplifting news are very, very needed.
I think this is exactly the point of holiday engagements, to kind of forget about daily life problems and feel a little bit of fairy-tale atmosphere. Warm, fun activities and resonating feeling of charity along with the magic of (royal) X-mas. I wonder if that might be one of the reasons for Kate's super-themed clothing on these occasions, to kind of emphasize this overall vibe exuded by holiday engagements.

  11. I'm sorry, but I think this just looks way too costumy... She sometimes takes themes too literally. This stands out for all the wrong reasons

    ReplyDelete

    1. Wow, who knew wearing a winter coat and sweater was "costumy"? I call it dressing 'festively' and celebrating the season, personally. Catherine looks awesome in both colors and this was a happy occasion with children. I think she looks great and her garment choice was perfectly suited for the event.

    2. I’m personally tired of the adjective customy to describe Kate’s clothes. You may like or dislike the color combination, or her military coats, but they are not customs.
I appreciate that she has dressed colorful and with Christmas colors to be with small children. I would have loved it if she had worn an real Christmas sweater with trees and reindeers and everything.

      Delete
    3. I think it’s important to remember that Kate probably dresses more for the people at the event rather than for us royal watchers. Yes this color palette is obviously very literal in terms of holiday spirit but it also lets Kate communicate non-verbally to all the attendees that she’s embracing the joy of the season. Personally I think she looks fabulous!

      Delete
    4. I see your point Anon 16.03. I sometimes have the feeling, she places excessive emphasis on the styling of garments, more than necessary.

      Delete
    5. I actually do not like the combination at all and although it is a perfect matcb to the hats of the children it looks weird.
Would have preferred a blue Christmas sweater or a dark jeans. But red, green, blue and brown is simply too much.

That said, as always it is not about what she wears bht what she does and which is the purpose of the organization. And this is simply stellar!!!

  14. What a perfect Kate-esque event! Today her work shone more than her outfit (which was lovely but unremarkable) which is exactly how it should be at an event like this. (Though her hair and makeup were indeed lovely!) I have to ask- is a "non-drop" an artificial tree? I'm not familiar with this term- but if so- it makes me feel much better about the artificial tree we purchased this year due to holiday travel haha

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Non-drop trees are those varieties which do not drop their needles as they remain green for months. Balsam fir, Frasier fir, Noble fir and others do not shed like Douglas fir or pines. (I'm going by varieties common in BC, Canada.) They are not artificial trees.

As these varieties do not dry out they are also not a fire hazard the way the shedders are. I used to test mine by holding a match to a piece taken from the back. Three months later they still did not ignite. A Douglas fir can go up like a torch after three weeks.

Now that I've moved to a condo live trees are forbidden in the bylaws. To get the smell of a natural tree I use the Thymes Frasier Fir Fragrance Diffuser (www.thymes.com)

      Delete
    2. Ooh Philly, thanks for the tip about getting the natural tree smell! I live in the Southwest and our Christmas tree (if we were to get a real one) would probably smell of mesquite rather than evergreen.

    3. Nothing is better then the Thymes Frasier Fir Diffuser and their regular holiday candles.

    4. You're welcome Valerie. It make such a difference to walk into a room and smell forest.

    5. Sorry folks, I love fresh trees but hate artificial scents, candles, diffusers, sprays, etc. So real plants for me and no smell candles, cleaners etc for me. Some may not shed as much but I get Nobles regularly and they drop also, I am suspicious of the claim that there is a non drop needle tree, some maybe not so much but I have never had a tree in my house for more than a few weeks that did not start dropping needles.:):)

    6. Zora from Prague7 December 2019 at 17:46

ali 😄Maybe we have different trees here in Central Europe but if a conifer does not drop needles, it is probably artificial 😁 Or someone has glued the needles to the branches! 🌲

      Delete
    7. From the NW US here: they don’t NOT drop needles. They’re just less profuse in how they do it. Nordmann are definitely the best in that regard. We’ve had them for our tree for quite a few years now because several farms close to us started cultivating them. Nobles will still drop enough to have to vacuum every few days. But yes, they are much more tidy

      Delete
    8. We always use our artificial tree, because several people in the household are allergic and cannot breathe in the constant presence of an evergreen. There’s nothing wrong with it. We’ve only had to replace it once in thirty Christmases, so we don’t see it as an environmental crime, and honestly most people think it’s real when they see it. Do whatever works best for you.

Glad to see her wearing a pretty normal outfit. Sturdy boots, skinny jeans, jumper and vest is a solid choice for many. I do love it when royals go all out for big ocasions but especially outdoor events profit from a more relatable aproach.

  24. Unpopular opinion coming in, I never understood leggings, jeggings, spray on jeans on her (expression I have just heard :)), Olympics, fun engagements, whatnot.
At this point, I would definitely advise her to wear a longer jumper, which would hide her good shape and legs and butt, but would prevent photos of her backwards which are unflattering and not so royal.

    1. You may be right---I prefer jeans with a little wiggle room---but I have seen criticism of her outfit as "disrespectful to the Queen," just like some say about what Meghan wears. I am a 100% defender of Meghan and I have to extend that to Kate. Where possible, I think Kate wants to wear what people around her wear, and especially when she's hopping around trees and playing with children. People will just have to accept that they will have a Queen who, in her 30s, wore what regular people wore and enjoyed herself.

      Delete
    2. These blue jeans do not enter in the spray on category IMO, they are nice classic sturdy blue jeans like we all wear. And while some of the black jeans she wore would seem too tight nowadays, those are very flattering IMO. Perhaps it is a generational thing, but although I do what I can and try other kinds of trousers, I always go back to the skinny ones.

    3. Zora from Prague6 December 2019 at 17:29

I agree, Allison. And I have seen no photos of Kate that would be unflattering and not so royal - perhaps they can be found somewhere else but I only come to this blog, both for photos and articles. The combo of jeans + jumper + jacket + boots seemed the right thing to wear for this type of engagement, and I think both the kids and adults involved had better things to do than to focus on the length of Kate's jumper, such as to chat to her, show her around etc.

    4. Annette New Zealand6 December 2019 at 20:37

Obviously she was fitting in with what the other mothers were wearing. It would have been totally inappropriate to turn up wearing a upmarket outfit and then join in outdoor activities. However as a member of the older generation, it does amaze me that sturdy boots suitable for long distance back country hiking are now fashionable!

    5. Zora, the "disrespectful to the Queen" line is pulled out by the anti-Kate or anti-Meghan trolls -- this is the first time I've had the pleasure of reading it about Kate, but there seem to be so many who do not think both women can coexist. It's amazed me how "disrespectful" everyone is, yet the Queen is fine with it! :)

And it appears the both Kate and Meghan are some of the NICEST women, kind to others, empathic, considerate, etc, so I can't imagine why anyone believes they ever are "feuded."

  27. She looks cute and what a great engagement. I am happy with the color scheme but would lose the dated jeans and the dated jacket with the too short sleeves. She looks lovely but like many of us maybe does not see that the outfit is a miss. It may be that she just does not care that much... but I happen to think she is working and her clothes do matter just as in any other job.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Don't think the jacket is dated but rather more sporty. Also, if you look at the picture of the model and of Kate wearing it in 2007, then read the description, it states it has "soft ribbed cuffs" which are black. It looks like Kate has pulled the ribbed part of the sleeves back to hide the black cuff, making it appear shorter. I think Kate does take care in dressing for the occasion. This being a 'working' engagement, she literally rolled her sleeves up for a 'let's do this' kind of look. Even the kids have on wellies and puffer type jackets! It's very relatable and works for picking trees and holding little children's hands.

  29. I know this is probably not a place for this, but I can't help but to just express my deep disappointment with princess Mette-Marit and her connections to Jeffrey Epstein. She admitted meeting him on an unspecified number of occasions between 2011-2013, and it just seems so bad IMO. It was after his conviction and quite recently. She should have known better (especially as a woman - don't tell me she didn't know or notice that she had been spending time with a predator). With Andrew, i felt like his greed and arrogance got him, but with Mette-Marit, I don't understand her motivation to be connected to this man and find it saddening. I am surprised media is reporting very little about it.

    1. It really isn't the place for this, and I would not choose to judge her especially since we do not know the context AT ALL involved with the meetings. She has publicly apologized and I for one believe it to be credible and sincere. I am sure she is mortified.

      Delete
    2. I think Epstein must have been very clever and plausible. The media is focusing on Andrew but a lot of people were taken in. Andrew, arrogant, out of touch and not very bright is just the kind of man he would take advantage of. As for Mette-Marit, I can easily believe she didn't know anything about an American philanthropist millionaire that I am sure seemed so interested in her charities.

      Delete
    3. I was reading an article earlier this week about lessons Royal families can take from the Epstein scandal. And the one thing they emphasized was while royal charitable endeavors are praiseworthy, it also makes them very vulnerable. In order to raise money for their foundations they need to mix and glad-hand with the world’s richest. But these characters are not always the most savory. And they almost always want something in return.

As for Mette-Marit, I find it very believable that she did not know. Just because Epstein is a big story in the US (and UK) does not mean it is a big story all over the world. I don’t believe I have ever seen his name mentioned in South-African news, the same probably apply to Nowegian news.

Should her office have vetted the people at these meetings better? Yes
But I find it very naive to think that she would have just “known” she was talking to a sexual predator. People like Epstein get where they are because they can put up a charming and innocent front.
I hope in my life I don’t get held responsible for the actions of every person I ever meet or talk to or even work with.

    4. Natacha, so true there are lots of people who seem to have been taken in by the man.

      Delete
    5. Anon and Natacha, to close this - I am sorry for maybe being too judgemental at first - I was kind of shocked after finding out. I am pretty sure Mette-Marit is mortified and has regrets. And yes, it is possible she knew very little about Epstein. But she does have the staff to do a basic background check for her. Honestly, probably even she could have googled his name herself (as many people often do with new acquintances) , and see that he was released from prison for several sex offences just a mere year ago. Over two years that they have been meeting (that is what we know), nobody did this basic check or nobody cared about it.

And while I still like Mette-Marit, think she is a hard working royal, and do not think her intentions were bad, I still think it was a huge mistake.

"In a recent episode of the Vogue U.S. video series Go Ask Anna, famed Editor in Chief Anna Wintour was asked which celebrity was best to turn to for holiday style inspiration. Wintour answered immediately that it should be Kate Middleton.

The Vogue editor-in-chief explained, “The Duchess of Cambridge always looks impeccable,” and noted that much of the appeal of Middleton’s aesthetic is that she always opts for styles that are “a little more classic and have a heritage feeling.”" There you have it, debate over, Wintour has spoken!!! :)

The pants need to seriously be burned (seriously!!) and the boots and socks do not go with the top half of the outfit. Different boots would have been perfect, she is outdoors but not climbing a mountain so these make no sense to me. the heavy socks also do not go with the top of her outfit. She does look to be enjoying her self and getting into the Christmas spirit!!
Read only some of the comments, not even going to comment on those.
Looking forward to Wednesday nights event!!
    Thanks Charlotte.

Forgot to add I would really love to see her in a "new" tiara, preferably the Strathmore Rose. Or the Orient Circlet with a red dress. I know it will probably be the Lovers Knot but a gal can dream:)
