Duchess Kate Strikes A Pose During Evelina London Creative Workshop Visit

The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out in London this morning to join a creative workshop run by the National Portrait Gallery’s Hospital Programme at Evelina London Children's Hospital to see how the creative arts can support children’s health and wellbeing.

The Duchess was presented with a lovely posy by Anna-Victoria Amoafa-Sennie who has achondroplasia, a form of dwarfism.

Today's event saw one of Kate's first patronages the National Portrait Gallery collaborating with one of her most recently chosen patronages Evelina London. Below, the Duchess closely followed by her assistant private secretary Natalie Barrows (we should soon hear news on Catherine Quinn's replacement) and her longtime Royal Protection Officer Emma Probert.

Kensington Palace said: "The National Portrait Gallery works in close collaboration with play specialists from Evelina London to take artists into the hospital to deliver workshops to children of all ages, along with their siblings and parents. Activities take place on the ward or in play rooms. The Hospital Programme runs in three other children’s hospitals in London – Great Ormond Street Hospital, Newham University Hospital and the Royal London Hospital in Whitechapel, working with nursing staff, hospital teachers and specialists. Over the past 15 years over 20,000 children (aged 0-18) have benefited from the creative workshops which include photography, animation, sculpture and textiles."

Kate was presented with "Rag Wreaths" created by a group of children she met including Savannah Wheeler-Wadison. She told the little girl she would put the pink one in Charlotte's room.

Savannah's ten-year-old brother Luke is a heart patient at Evelina and quickly asked to take a photo of Kate holding the wreath. She was more than happy to oblige and looked delighted to pose for the budding photographer.

Luke was thrilled with the results. Rebecca English reports he said he would "take it home and keep it forever".

I think you'll agree Luke did a fantastic job :)

More from the Mail Online:

'Luke's mother, Joanne Wheeler, 47, later explained that she discovered her son had a congenital heart condition in the womb and he was first operated on just five days after he was born. He still attends regular check-ups at Evelina and may require further surgery in the future 'This place saved my son's life, it's as simple as that,' she told Kate.
'We would do anything for the staff here. ' In fact Luke, from Rainham, Kent, has managed to raise more than £14,000 this year to donate towards the hospital's work by selling the rag wreaths he and his sister make, doing a sponsored swim, auctions and standing with collecting boxes at The Oval .
He said: 'We just really wanted to say thank you to her for coming an spending time here. She was really touched, I think. I told her that I had the same birthday as her son, George, and my sister is four, like Charlotte. She said Charlotte would love to have the pink wreath up in her room. It would be amazing if they did that.
'Not many people get to see a princess in real life and she is going to be the Queen one day. It was really exciting.'

Kate joined a group of  young children receiving care at the hospital for a range of activities including illustration, photography and 3D set design.

The Telegraph reports:

The National Portrait Gallery gives each of their patients a free book, Playful Portraits, in an effort to encourage them to spend their time on the ward pursuing creative activities.
She first sat down with artist Jessica Rosenfield, who was instructing the children.  Chatting with the artist, the Duchess said: "It’s wonderful to see what art therapy adds. To be able to paint, to draw, to be able to tell your story."
"Who is this here?" asked the Duchess as she pointed to a photo of six-year-old Kallum Stuart, who is being treated for kidney failure. "Are you all friends here?" she said as she looked round the table. "What a treat it is for me to meet you all today. What a treat! I am so pleased."

Kate enjoyed seeing the results of their efforts.

The children told Kate about making characters for their pop-up theatre.

Kate spoke to Clive and his dad to learn more about delivering workshops to children at their bedsides.

A video from the engagement.

The Duchess brought back her bespoke Dolce & Gabbana bouclé skirt suit for the engagement.

Kate first wore the ensemble almost one year ago for the Mentally Healthy Schools conference.

The jacket is very similar to the D&G Double-Breasted blazer shown below. It features a lapel collar, multicoloured pattern and snap button closure.

Kate accesorised with her Mappin & Webb Empress pendant and earrings.

And completed the look with her Gianvito Rossi Piper shoes. They are available at My Theresa.

Kate removed her engagement ring as she was visiting a hospital.

On Sunday evening, William and Kate will attend the BAFTA awards. All guests are being encouraged to wear sustainable clothing. It's been suggested a large number of attendees will opt to re-wear gowns from previous years. If Kate chooses a repeat, which one of her gowns would you like to see again? The stunning black velvet strapless McQueen she wore for the Sun Military Awards back in 2011 gets my vote.

  2. Charlotte, thank you for your timely blogs. You have been busy of late! I was wondering if Kate will be doing more engagements than originally planned, due to Meghan and Harry's departure. Also, we saw Sophie at the palace reception for African leaders, and I was wondering if she will take on some extra engagements to help the queen. Lastly, I read that it's possible that Beatrice and Eugenie will be asked to assist. Personally, I'd love to see more of Sophie. She seems capable, as well as quietly popular. What do you think? Thank you again for all you do.

    2. Sophie reminds me a lot of the Princess Royal in that respect--she does a lot of work that is valuable but hardly noticed. I can see why the Queen likes her so much.

Im with you Abby, I think it will be Sophie that will step in and I really enjoy seeing her. her and Edward are tried and true and her and kate seem to really balance each other. Im not sure about Eugenie and Bea, seems like they would not be asked to step up with the monarchy streamlining down. To me E&S make more sense as the son/daughter in law of the current monarch while E and Bea the granddaughters then nieces of future monarch? my 2 cents.

    5. I'm Sophie's age, and I'm wondering if anyone else on here would like to see what a-dare I say it?-mature woman wears. I love Kate's fashion, but it is nice to see an older member of the RF who is also stylish. Our culture now is so youth obsessed, but I think women of all ages are beautiful.

    6. Abby, I'm definitely interested in a Sophie blog by Charlotte. I've followed another Sophie fashion blog for a while but it wasn't of the quality Charlotte provides. As "older" women will stay longer and longer in the workforce, we need role models.

    2. Velvet McQueen came to my mind as well, but personally I think we won´t see it. With Kate shifting towards more elegant sillhouttes and even more modest cuts (what I mean is long skirts, flowy midi - long dresses, loose fitting trousers etc.) I think it is somewhat unlikely that she´d choose strapless tight-fitting velvet gown.

I hope for either 1) pink-burgundy Gucci from 2019 Women in Hedge Funds or 2) white Self Portrait dress from Street Cat named Bob premiere, but with forest green accessories. Last but not least it would be great to see silver one-shoulder Jenny Packham from 2011´s National Memorial Arboretum event at St. James Palace. I feel like this gown is very underrated, it was one of her best IMO and it is compatible with Kate´s current style.

  16. Kate certainly does shine at these events with children! LOVE the little photo of her, and what a treasure for that young man!! Another favorite is the photo of her looking at the little girl, the look on the little girl's face says it all, so cute. Liking that Kate has worn repeats for the events this week, very work oriented and appropriate. Have always liked the style and material of this suit, but would prefer the jacket to be a tad longer. Her hair is beautiful especially in the photo where you can see it from the back. As for BAFTA, I'm definitely with you Charlotte, that is the dress I hope that she rewears....so many options on jewelry, hair...can't wait to see. A great week of meaningful events for the Duchess!! cc

  18. Great cause! Although she's lovely not keen on the suit. It's just weird where the jacket meets the waist & the pockets look lumpy. Although I'm not apposed to short hems on her actually I rather like them this suit looks cut off to short for the overall look. Not great when bending over with children either. Not her best look for sure!

  22. This outfit is ok, it isn’t one of my favourites. I don’t like how the pockets sit on her hips, it makes her look like she has a “muffin top” or “spare tire” which she doesn’t. I thought it was just today but it looks like that in previous pictures too, it’s still a nice suit, I think it’s a design flaw

I thought a possibly pregnancy(with the look of the suit and not wearing her engagement ring, possibly swelling?) but the suit looks the same in the previous wearing of it as well so I no longer thing that lol. Curious why she isn’t wearing the engagement ring, I like the jewellery and I like the suede with the shoes, but I really don’t like the thick chunky heel. I guess I haven’t been converted to the chunky heel yet lol.

  26. Most days I read this blog for two reasons-one because it covers a topic that I am genuinely interested in and two because it is a bit of escapism. Today is different. Today I had the great honor of being in the lobby of the Evelina London Hospital and helped to greet the Duchess of Cambridge as she arrived. I had purchased Yellow Roses in honor of the Princess of Wales to give to her. I opted instead to give them to a boy named Adam who I had met while waiting. In turned I was given the opportunity to hear her conversation with Adam. It was one of the most genuinely caring conversations I have ever heard. Admiring people from afar can be a bit tricky. For those of us that usually admire HRH Catherine, The Duchess of Cambridge, from afar, I can tell you our admiration is not misplaced.

The video you included in the blog was wonderful, esp. the part with the little boy who is chatting away to her and the mom who is so earnestly talking to her--and Kate is earnestly listening. She is such a natural with children and she does these events perfectly, you can see she really cares about the cause and isn't just there as a celebrity. so much class.

I have always liked this outfit, but me thinks the skirt is just a tad short. im sure its really not but ive gotten used to her wearing the longer dresses and skirts. although it does make her look more youthful and damn that girls got great legs:) These are one of my favorite earing and necklace combo! love her hair up like this and love love the shoes, im a chunky heel kinda gal:) I love the top but I feel like the top would look absolutely smashing with some slim black trousures! still dreaming of cigarette pants in MT :)

Oh yes, and I am also confused as to why no ring? have not noticed before that she does not wear when she goes to hospitals? why would that be?

Please let her wear the 2011, but more importantly wear the jewels again. the bracelet alone was to die for! I think they were a wedding present but cant remember? Charlotte do you know where they came from? I think the necklace could convert to tiara? that is such a beautiful photo of her, sigh:)

  30. For the BAFTAS, I'd like to see a recycle from way back. Yes the black velvet, but also the McQueen lilac, the Wakeley pale green, a Roland Moulet or one of the two Jenny Packhams: the pale grey one shoulder chiffon or the slim light blue from Paris. Or maybe the dress worn to the 007 film premiere if the top layer was reworked to be more flattering; that would certainly meet the event's theme of a recycle. With some creativity, that dress could be totally transformed.

  31. Lovely! Charlotte, I wanted to ask if you would reconsider wording on of the first sentences. "Suffers from achondroplasia" to "has". As the mom of a special needs kiddo with multiple diagnoses it is easier to read and use. (just having a disorder or disability doesn't necessitate suffering, ya'know?) 45. Kate did not follow the baftas when everyone was to wear black to speak out against sexual assault. As such, I think it would be unfortunate if she did suddenly decide to follow them now and wear something recycled.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. This is why I am not a fan of organizations “telling” people what to wear. I am always up for Kate recycling an evening dress, but not for setting it as a dress code.
This just put people in a difficult position. Do you support every cause somebody links to an event, or do you not support any cause?

Although technically this is different to #MeToo. #MeToo is a separate movement that have no actual link to the BAFTA’s but as a third party asked people to support them with what they wear. In this case the hosts (BAFTA’s) put a suggested dress code in place.

As I said, Kate is finding herself in a difficult position, as with #MeToo I think she is damned if she do, and damned if she don’t. If it was me I would go for an unseen repeat. That way she is sticking to it, but it could also just be what she planned to wear in any case.

      Delete
    2. RachelZa - my understanding is that the BAFTAS did not say it could only be a recycle, but that it could comport with the theme of sustainability.

      Delete
    3. Since I had no idea what sustainable fabric could be used in an evening gown, googled this article on the most natural and futuristic fabrics used today: https://goodonyou.eco/most-sustainable-fabrics/ I am sure there are plenty of creative designers who could whip up a 100% cotton or bamboo evening gown, but I tend to agree with RachelZA that Kate would do well to wear an unseen repeat, it makes the most sense. If she were to take on the challenge it might be intriguing to see her rework an old gown, much like she did with the black Alexander McQueen. Anxious to see what Kate comes up with, I doubt she will disappoint.

  46. There is zero scientific evidence that rings carry bacterial loads. Depending on the hospital policy nurses wear them all the time even in the OR. However people sometimes do feel it is best for infection control to error with over caution. So that could be why. Being a royal jewelry watcher...who would give her right arm for 5 min of looking in the Queen's vault (hehe) I'd be sad if I met her and she wasn't wearing it.

  50. Wow, Kate blew me with her appearance. She looked pretty exhausted and tired the last few days but here she looks at least 5 years younger.
I love her half up hair. Not the biggest fan of the outfit- I prefer more colourful clothes around children but she radiated so much, it overshadows her outfit completely.

And I agree- I would love to see a repeat of the black vlevet. But I also think that the inevitable comparison to 2011 might be bit cruel. She was 9 years younger then and I fear the comparison might not be in favour of present time Kate. Maxbe if she donned it with a updo and some royal diamonds.......

    1. I beg to differ. If anyone can pull off wearing an outfit 9 years later it would be Kate!

      Delete
    2. C., while I - as I wrote a few posts above - don't think we'll be seeing this gown either, I really don't think it has anything to do with "cruelty" of Kate's appearence comparison in 2011 vs 2020! IMHO she looks better than ever, obviously I am not saying younger, but she definitely does not look old, her hair is still on fleek and she is in amazing shape, and most importantly, she radiates steadiness and confidence.

It is not a matter of Kate's appearance, it is a matter of her style, and we know that her style has evolved (but probably everyone's did since 2011).

We ask you use a name when posting (a pseudonym such as the name of a royal you like or anything you wish). If you do not wish to use the sign in options, simply select the "Name/URL" option on the drop down menu and insert your name, and if you wish the country/state you're from. You can leave the URL blank.
