Duchess Kate Endorses Tiny Happy People: "Gold Dust For Parents"

Tonight, Kensington Palace announced the Duchess of Cambridge has "endorsed the national launch of Tiny Happy People, a BBC platform providing resources and support to parents and carers of children aged 0-4."

Kate has been involved with the project for some time. Last November, the Court Circular recorded a meeting with the BBC Children’s and Education team and then the BBC's General Director. It was reported at the time we would hear more in due course. We now know discussions focused on Tiny Happy People, with the Duchess sharing input on the creation of several resources including videos, activities and games. Kate contributed to both The Science of Singing to Bump and How eye contact is key to your baby's language learning. Both resources are popular videos on the website.

Kate joined a group of parents with their children for a special event at Sandringham last week.

Hello! reports: "Kate held a socially distanced meeting in a garden last week with Ryan and his eight-month-old daughter Mia; Henrietta, Abu and their 11-month-old daughter Amirah; and Kerry, Darren and their two-year-old son Dexter to see how they have used the resources."

The Duchess will appear on BBC Breakfast in the morning to discuss the initiative which she describes as "gold dust for parents" with Louise Minchin. In a preview from the conversation Kate said: "In the first few months, there's a huge amount of support from midwives and health visitors. But from then onwards, there's a massive gap before they then start school. Hearing some of the things from the parents today, Ryan at the beginning, saying how his baby has got five different cries. He's learnt a huge amount from Tiny Happy People and it's information like that I wish I had had as a first-time mum, but, for so many parents, it's gold dust really for families to be given those tips and tools to be able to use, particularly in these first five years."

The Duchess said "Louis doesn't understand social distancing" and wants to "cuddle everything and particularly babies younger than him".

In a statement Kate said: "Families and carers are at the heart of nurturing the next generation of happy, healthy adults, but sometimes it can be hard to know where to turn to for advice. Tiny Happy People is an invaluable resource which provides parents and carers with support and tips, as well as simple activities to ensure children develop the language skills they need to have the best possible start in life."

More from the BBC: "Tiny Happy People can help you develop your child’s language and communication skills, so they get the best start in life. We’ll show you why and how you can bond with your child, before they’re born and throughout their early lives - it’s never too early to start. Our ideas and activities are easy to build into your daily routine. They’re quick and inspiring, but they’re also based on expert advice and evidence, and are proven to help your child’s development. In England, 1 in 4 children starting primary school are behind with their level of literacy development by the time they start primary school, rising to more than 1 in 3 (42%) in some areas. The picture is similar in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland too. Language and communication skills unlock literacy, and that’s why Tiny Happy People is concentrating on the building blocks of language development."

The Telegraph reports:

'A spokesman for the BBC said: “At the heart of the initiative is a simple message - talk to children from as early an age as possible.” The website promises a range of free films, articles, quizzes and parenting tips to help to nurture children’s language from pregnancy onwards.
Lord Hall, BBC director-general, said: “We couldn’t be more proud of the part we’re playing in this amazing partnership.
“Growing up happy and healthy is the greatest gift we can give to any child.  This campaign embodies our mission to inform, educate and entertain. The BBC has created hundreds of videos and written content that we hope will make a real difference.”

Kensington Palace noted the Royal Foundation is committed to supporting the long term rollout and possible expansion of Tiny Happy People. There's an active Facebook page with plenty of fascinating snippets and videos available here. Below, a Monday Motivation graph.

The Duchess chose Emilia Wickstead's Anatola pleated polka-dot crepe shirtdress for the event. The piece is described as: "Emilia Wickstead’s AW19 collection draws inspiration from Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather trilogy, and this black and white polka-dot shirtdress effortlessly captures 1980s Italian nostalgia. Exclusive to MATCHESFASHION, it’s crafted from floaty crepe to a fluid silhouette which is cinched with a buckled belt, then falls to a knife-pleated midi-length skirt and fastens with discreet buttons." Kate's appears to be a custom piece with alterations to the sleeve area in particular.

The piece was on sale for $608 before selling out.

And completed the look with her Castaner Carina wedges. They are available in multiple colours at Net-A-Porter.

Tiny Happy People is a terrific resource, I'm very much looking forward to seeing Kate and the Royal Foundation's continued collaboration with the BBC. The past several months have been grueling for all of us, and I imagine particularly stressful for new parents. It's wonderful to see another initiative in place. This is an area very close to Kate's heart and a natural extension of her early years work.

  1. Love her hair. I never liked those shoes and I really don’t like them with that dress. But mainly, how cute is she with those babies?

    Be safe everyone.

  2. The Duchess looks beautiful. A lot of young mums and dads who might not have a support network or family would benefit greatly from this. Yet again the Duchess has highlighted a very important issue.I think the fact that she took her time finding her feet is standing to her now. A truly remarkable young woman, doing her very best for Queen and County.

  3. The dress looks wonderful on her -- it has fullness and is quite flattering. I do like those wedges very much! Her hair looks a bit different than other times she's had it lightened -- it's very very pretty but I still think she looks lovely in dark hair. :) Looks like a nice visit for a good cause.

I completely agree Allison in US. I have tried to get on board with this hair color but I can't. In short, it's unnatural and too warm for her skin tone. I was onboard when it was highlights but I'm afraid we've gone past that point.

In addition, I absolutely love this dress but not with these shoes. Too casual a shoe for that dress.

    2. I think the unnaturalness of her hair color is one thing I don't like. When it was dark with a lot of shine, it made her skin look so lovely. But I can understand wanting to make a change -- but maybe even darker would be fun. I see what you mean about the shoes -- maybe just black simple wedges if she wanted to wear that style to keep it casual.

    3. Have you ever gone to the hairdresser's and said, "Let's try something different?" Last time I did that I went from long brown hair to a short apricot-colored do. I was in shock but my co-workers liked it.
In the past, Kate's hair has lightened in the summer. She has been spending a lot of time outdoors. This actually looks more like the let's try something new variety. Other than that, she is known for Radical hair style changes, usually "fringe," in the first months of pregnancy. ..
I kinda like it. Can't really call it grumpy or aging.

    4. Anon 2:44 interesting that you mention a fringe often indicates the first months of pregnancy...I always thought their family is complete, but you never know...

    5. Haha Rachel! Then there's Allison's "fullness" remark...02:44
Ps that should have been frumpy, not grumpy-thank you auto-correct. Although, there may be such a thing as grumpy attire; not sure about grumpy hairstyles.. A certain royal princess comes to mind, maybe both hair and attire..

    6. Regarding criticisms of Kate's hair color being unnatural. Check out some photos also taken during a summer in July- on the steps of the Lindo Wing with baby George. She was known to forgo some facial treatments as well as some hair processing and coloring during pregnancy. She was also thought to use a safe vegetable henna rinse to add color. It did not cover her gray hair but changed the color to a golden shade, giving the appearance of streaking.

I think, judging from increased facial lines and the very similar color to those earlier photos, that she may have simplified her beauty routine while in Norfolk. The latest photos of Kate in the back garden with the mental health staff and paramedics also look like she has forgone some hair treatments, resulting in her natural waves and curls appearing. This is definitely not your standard blow-out hairstyle.

  4. Fantastic initiative! The more you speak and read to your baby and preschooler in the first five years, the better of they will be! Critical years! [The Duchess looked absolutely splendid in her more conservative Mom dress (those polka dots are beautiful! I made on a comment about her conservative dress choices of late in the previous post-it's HRH's way of "buttoning up" ie acknowledging our serious circumstances), but her hair loose, as always, is truly the jewel of the crown! Apologies for the rambling. Stay safe, everyone (and wear. your. masks). Sylvia

  5. OMG - Kate's dress is sublime. Love every detail, the polka dots, the black and white, the pleats, the belt. Timeless dress - I hope some of you agree!

And what an amazing event. Soooooo Happy!

Another wonderful initiative! Kate promotes such worthy things. It's clear that her interest and desire to help is based on her personal experience. I love those "9 things"! My sons are grown now but I can imagine how a lot of parents can benefit from such tips - just like the parents in the brief video who shared their experience. Sometimes it makes me sad to see a mum or dad who only put a mobile phone in their toddler's hands instead of interacting with them. Talking to kids, reading or singing to them is priceless. It's also fun and the kids can feel they are loved. Well done Tiny Happy People and Kate!

    1. Zora I completely agree that a mobile phone or ipad are just no substitute for interacting with a child, and helping a parent find creative solutions is a great start. Somehow we need to put the phone down and lift our heads up. As a book lover, our mother always made us walk to the library every week during summer vacation, and then give her little reports on what we read before we returned the book. Libraries seem to be forgotten places, but they can be great, fun, and entertaining to children, especially if you don't have a lot of money. Love this initiative 'Tiny Happy People'!! cc

  7. I do not wish to bring this to you however I am out of options and there's no harm in sharing what I am going through. I am a single mother of two toddlers 1 & 2. Currently living in conditions which has / is affecting my mental health. I am on depression tablets, waiting for a move for over a year now. This is affecting my parenting and my toddler cries everytime we return back to the property. I have gone through all sources to find a stable, secure and healthy property however I have been told to wait. It hot hard during the lockdown and I am trying everything I can to move just in case lockdown is reinstated. Happy toddlers is what I would like too. And a healthy mental state.

Is there anything that can be done to help speed up the process to provide me and my children a permanent abode where we are all happy and they can develop further.

    1. Hello,

I am so sorry to hear you are a going through such a difficult time. This is a blog dedicated to the Duchess of Cambridge, and not officially affiliated with her in any way.

Do you live in the UK? If so, I know several organisations who can offer the proper supports and the best advice.

I hope you and your children can move to a new home as soon as possible. In the meantime, please do reach out. If you're not in the UK, I'm sure readers from across the pond would be happy to recommend organisations best equipped to offer help.

This looks like an amazing resource. As a new mum myself, I completely understand the importance of support for parents at home with their children. I'm always here for new ideas and activities for my bub - such a shame the videos don't seem to be accessible outside the UK.

Kate seems to have a real preference for this style of dress lately!

  9. I absolutely love this initiative! "Happy little people" how important & how wonderful! Gosh I wish this support was available when I was raising my children decades ago! How wonderful that it is available to parents in the UK now & hopefully just such a project will inspire similar programs across the pond & around the world! :)

I love Kate's dress, it's one of my new favorites! Take care everyone & remember you are not alone! We are in this together! :) xoxo

  11. Unknown, so sorry for your situation. You need to be more specific as to where you live, because different countries have different resources. You also have to state your specific needs for a new residence and what you would be able to afford in rent. Then perhaps Charlotte might be able to link you up with someone who can help you. Wishing you peace and blessings.

Loved everything about this! The project, the dress, shoes and LOVE the lighter summer streaked locks! THIS is her niche and I loved that she said it started years ago when speaking to families. She said the same thing with "Heads Together". She listened to the people and started projects based on that need. KATE THE GREAT.

Oh, this program is wonderful! As a teacher I have studied how important language acquisition in the early years is. This program teaches parents how to build important language skills (listening and production) which have been in decline over the last few years due to technology. Parents being on devices and young children being on devices has meant that language interaction opportunities have declined. This program supports the re-establishment of parent/child communication from an evidence/science based perspective. Bravo Kate for championing this cause and being so involved in developing and promoting it.

  20. What a great initiative! Parenthood can be very tough and all the support offered and made easily accessible is fantastic. I like Kate's dress today I don't mind the shoes with it and I too find her highlights just not quite the right shade and it is something that happens to my hair color sometimes and I don't have the budget for hair stylists like Kate would have ;) Maybe she was doing her own hair color during lockdown??

    ReplyDelete
  21. My take away: great initiative, great dress, awful hair. I think everyone here is well aware how much is disagree with her love for highlights in recent years, but it is also the hairstyle itself. Different cut, more ponytails, and casual (half) up dos as well as a different kind og blow out and I would be very happy. Well, I am sure Kate doesn't care in the least what I think ;-)
The initiative comes at a crucial point. Because at the moment working from home with now childcare available in many cases means that they have to use the digital babysitter to a certain extent to be able to get their situation to work. So, even the families that highly value communication and have a more restricted mindset towards devices find themselves at a point where they have to rethink their approach. Especially with children that are just too young to be capable of entertaining themselves for more than 5-10 minutes. I hope parents in that situation won't feel pressured and shamed by this initaitve. We live in very special times and have to make the best out of it till we can find back to normality. I rather hope this initiative will help to smooth over the after effects from this particular hardship and opens the eyes of many how to connect to ther children in new ways as soon as possible.
