UPDATED: Kate in 'Tennis Player' Dress for Zoom Call with Andy Murray

To mark what would have been the start of the Wimbledon championships, the Duchess of Cambridge joined Andy Murray and children from Bond Primary School in London for a Zoom call.

The call took place last Friday, with the Duchess calling in from Anmer Hall.

The Duchess has a connection with the school: in January 2018 she visited them to see the work of the Wimbledon Junior Tennis Initiative (WJTI). The programme aims to offer more children the opportunity to experience tennis, as well as showing how participation in sport can develop the life skills and values which tennis encourages, such as teamwork, discipline and fairness.

My standout memory from that day is a very sweet one. Pupils were encouraged to welcome Kate with a handshake and hello but quickly lined up for a hug from a real life princess :)

More on the call from the Telegraph:

'Appearing at the end of the children’s tennis lesson with AELTC Head Coach Dan Bloxham, the Duchess asked them about their time in lockdown and whether they have missed their friends, hearing about their new school regime of social bubbles.
One instructor said the children had been "on fire" in training that day, with the Duchess asking "What sort of things have you been learning?"
Shown one of the drills, which involved young players running quickly on the spot, she said: "Fantastic! That's very important for your footwork isn't it?"
Speaking slowly so she could be heard over a short time delay, she asked: “Have you all missed doing lots of physical exercise and things during lockdown? What sort of things have you been able to do?”
She went on to empathise: “It's really hard isn't it, to keep that self-motivation going. It's very impressive you've kept that training going."
Hearing about the best bits of watching Wimbledon, she added: “They [players] show great sportsmanship as well. I think tennis is brilliant for that, especially Wimbledon.”

The Duchess then teased an additional special guest and dropped a few hints for the excited students: "He plays tennis for Great Britain. He's a two-time Olympic champion. He's a former world number one. Can you possibly guess who this might be?

One young boy exclaimed: "Andy Murray!" ...before none other than Andy himself appeared onscreen.

Hello! reports:

"And Andy, have you got any tips for these guys if they want to take up tennis a bit more professionally?" asked the Duchess.
“The most important thing is to have fun," he replied. "If you're enjoying it, you get more out of your lessons and your practising. Listen to your coach, that’s very important. That's the two most important things at your age. If you’re competing or playing any matches, try really hard in them. But winning and losing isn't the most important thing. Enjoying playing a sport and being active is the most important thing. If you do go on to choose it as your career obviously the winning and losing changes a bit."
He also described missing his disappointment over missing this year's big competitions, saying he was "getting old for a tennis player".
"So missing Wimbledon this week is obviously a shame," he added. "I've missed the travelling...missing seeing friends like everyone else. Family, I've not seen my mum and dad for a few months so I’m looking forward to seeing them again hopefully very soon. There's been some challenges but I guess sometimes when you go through difficult moments like this you learn to appreciate the things you maybe took for granted sometimes? I'll definitely make sure I spend more time with my family and friends when I get the opportunity."
"Exactly," the Duchess replied. "And hopefully that time is relatively near as well."

With thanks to Caroline Parr, Kate's pretty green dress is the £665 HVN Maria belted printed silk crepe de chine midi dress. It's available in limited sizing at Net-A-Porter, Farfetch and The Webster. A shorter version of the style is available at ShopBop.

Very fittingly, the dress is adorned with tiny tennis players.

The Maria style is a staple for the brand which was founded by London-born model Harley Viera-Newton. It's on sale in blue at Coltorti Boutique and reduced by 60% in yellow at Moda Operandi.

Kate accessorised with her Monica Vinader Siren Wire earrings. They remain in stock on Vinader's website for £115.

Kate completed the look with a ponytail and her Wimbledon bow.

Following the chat, Andy Murray tweeted: "Loved dropping in on this, thanks for having me." This was KP's reply:

Wishing you all a safe and happy weekend!

  1. Such a charming and classic duchess. HRH Duchess Catherine’s whimsical choice of frock is in keeping with the spirit of the day, and her kind & generous nature always shines through in all that she does!

  2. We all know Kate is a queen of literal & themed dressing but I haven't seen this one coming. Lol.

    1. I hear you. This is so much in your face, it’s just too much. Like all the green in Ireland. She needs to time it down. A lot.

    2. I don´t actually mind the dress. It was unexpectedly specific so I smiled/laughed when I first saw it, but it was a children´s event so probably she was just trying to amuse the kids. I personally don´t like any figural motives (people, animals) on clothing so I wouldn´t wear this but I get where she was going with it. Tbh I loved all the green in Ireland.

    1. Hello,

I don't usually do full posts on the financial reports, but I will have a good look at it over the weekend :)

  5. I thought the dress looked pretty cute on the model, although of course the price means I would never buy it. But it's cute. That older photo of Kate with shorter darker hair reminds me of how stunning she is with darker hair. Sigh. And a complaint for both Kate and Meghan -- why not wear a new pair of earrings for every engagement and make me happy? :)

One thing I love about Catherine is that she sticks with what she knows: children, art, mothering, mental health, tennis, etc. I love her focus and sincerity.

I ADORE the Duchess in almost any shade of green, but, is it me or is this dress just a bit much? This takes theme dressing to a new level.

    2. If there EVER would be a place to wear this it would be on such a call or at Wimbledon!

    3. Obviously the dress was made for the general market and not a custom piece for the Duchess, so there must be a demand. There seems to be a trend to these retro inspired dresses with "charming prints", so don't mind so much that she thought it nice to wear when talking to young tennis students. I can so see her wearing this dress for quick informal meetings. She looks relaxed and engaged with the children and Andy Murray, great video.

  7. What a great “chat”. Perfect to have Andy as the guest. I thought her dress was perfect for this event with the kids. I do not love theme dressing but for certain occasions and those involving kids and other select groups I think theme dressing can really work.

    1. I agree. A beautiful look- summery, relaxed, stunning and absolutely fitting without theme dressing.
Oh how do I miss her darker hair.....

  11. Catherine is so genuine when interacting with children, and I feel like she really shines. I wonder if she planned to wear this dress at Wimbledon this year. I think it is very cute and live the color. I also like that they replied to Andy’s tweet!!

    Hope from USA

  12. Now that I had the chance to watch the whole videoclip I have to comment on two things.

Firstly I love how Kate comes out of her shell around children. The way she is teazing them and over acting. It is something I can associate with as a teacher. I am a naturally shy person, but with a side of my personality that can only come out in the classroom.

The second thing is something I have noticed with the Zoom calls. With regular royal engagements Kate is the guest, she goes and visit a school/organization, so they run the show. But with the Zoom calls it feels like they come and visit her, she is the host running the show. Which change the dynamics completely and again show us a different to Kate.

    1. I agree. I actually thought while watching it, that she would make a really good television show host! She was very good at keeping the ball rolling.

    1. Agreed, Anon. Kate’s dress may be too ‘literal’ a look for some, but I think it’s fun for an engagement involving children.

  14. The Duchess and indeed the rest of the working royal family have come in to their own during this pandemic. Sad that the Queen can not get back to work. I'm sure she misses seeing her people as much as they her. It must be a great comfort to see her family honour her and their country with all that they do for Great Britain and The Commonwealth.

  15. It's a fun dress, perfect for the occasion, and she looks great in green. Cute as can be, and a sense of humor! Love her, and love watching her interact with children. She's such a shining star!

  21. I am puzzled why the duchess films herself into the light for her newer solo zoom calls? Pointing the camera into the light coming from the window delivers a poorer quality image. Thank you for your many interesting posts,Charlotte. Your blog is always a pleasure to read.
