The Duchess Dazzles in Jenny Packham Showstopper at No Time to Die Premiere

It was a glittering red carpet appearance at the Royal Albert Hall this evening for the premiere of James Bond's latest outing No Time to Die. Now, I know we're all dying to talk about that gown, but first a little about the evening :)

The event marked a rare joint engagement for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the Prince of Wales, and the Duchess of Cornwall. Below, a lovely shot of Kate and Charles.

The royal party was welcomed by Lord Lieutenant of Greater London, Sir Kenneth Olisa before being introduced to Bond producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli. They were also warmly greeted by the President of the Royal Albert Hall, Ian McCulloch.

An arrival video from the Telegraph.

In recognition of the movie's history, the world premiere will benefit charities supporting serving and former members of the three intelligence agencies (the Secret Intelligence Service, the Security Service and GCHQ). As we continue to appreciate our gradual return to normality, it's so important to show gratitude to those who sacrificed so much for us over the past eighteen months -- and that's why a number of health care workers and members of the armed forces were invited to be among the first in the country to see the film.

A look at the red carpet before arrivals.

Like so many events, this eagerly anticipated night had been postponed several times due to Covid-19. There was an air of great excitement as the premiere was finally held.

We saw Charles, Camilla, William and Kate pose for photos on the red carpet.

Inside, the royals met the stars of the night, including actors Daniel Craig, Rami Malek, Léa Seydoux and Lashana Lynch; screenwriters Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Phoebe Waller-Bridge; and 'No Time to Die' song performers Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell.

Indeed, 007 couldn't help but notice Kate's look tonight. "You look jolly lovely", Daniel Craig said.

Kate meeting Lashana Lynch. Judging by the photo, I think Lashana was also a fan of the look :)

Bond premieres are always a highlight on the movie calendar, and something of a staple for the royal one. This film has particular significance, with hopes firmly pinned on Daniel Craig's final mission as 007 marking a turning point for cinemas in the UK. The arts sector across the board has been damaged over the course of the pandemic. It's easy to forget eighteen months ago it was thriving -- and worth billions in fact. Through tentative reopening and strong adherence to restrictions, leading cinema chains have been eying this film for over a year. Advance ticket sales are incredibly promising because the franchise appeals to people of all ages and its history spans nearly six decades, which sets it apart from other offerings over the summer.

Asked about the potential impact for cinemas, Daniel Craig recently said he "believes in cinema", adding he hopes the film can give the industry "a boost". "Cinema is here to stay as far as I’m concerned, and if we can help in some way, I’ll be very happy," added Mr Craig. Clare Binns, joint managing director of UK chain Picturehouse Cinemas, told iNews, "Everyone is excited – not just audiences, but all the cinemas are getting really fired up. You can sense the buzz. It feels like an exciting moment for film."

The 25th installment in the franchise follows James Bond after his decision to leave active service and retreat to a tranquil life in Jamaica.

His newfound peace doesn't last long however, when he's pulled back into action by an old friend who turns up asking for help. A mission to rescue a kidnapped scientist sends Bond on a journey to find a mysterious villain with a dangerous plan.

Filmed across a number of locations in England, Scotland, Italy, Jamaica and Norway it promises an action-filled movie filled with classic moments Bond fans have come to expect and love.

A very familiar sight for royal fans. Lea Seydoux, who reprises her role from SPECTRE as Dr Madeleine Swann, walks across the Mall with a troop of Life Guards from the Household Cavalry in the background.

No Time to Die was helmed by director Cary Joji Fukunaga, who stepped in to replace Danny Boyle after the latter exited due to creative differences.

You might remember Mr Boyle was responsible for this unforgettable outing with the Queen and 007.

The trailer.

London is paying tribute to 007 in several ways. Take a look at luxury retail destination Burlington Arcade in Mayfair.

A Triumph Scrambler 1200XE driven by Bond outside the cinema at Selfridges.

And in a fitting tribute to mark Craig's swansong, 'Commander Bond' has been made an honorary Commander in the Royal Navy. Commander Craig said: “I am truly privileged and honoured to be appointed the rank of Honorary Commander in the senior service."

William, Kate, Charles and Camilla take their seats in the Royal Box.

It was a night for outstanding fashion (and I'm not just referring to the Duchess). Here's the man of the hour looking rather dapper in velvet magenta.

Like Kate, Lea Seydoux chose a gorgeous cape gown for the night. This silver and white sequined, ethereal piece is by Louis Vuitton.

Lashana Lynch, who plays MI6 Agent Nomi, selected a beautiful gown believed to be by Vivienne Westwood. The vibrant golden-yellow and ball-gown skirt make for a sweeping combination.

Naomie Harris (Eve Moneypenny) chose a sequin-studded Michael Kors creation, styled with Ana Khouri jewellery, Jimmy Choos, and an Omega watch. Speaking to Vogue ahead of the premiere Naomie said, "The classic silhouettes and sophisticated elegance that Michael Kors is known for worldwide are a perfect marriage with the ultra high-end glamour of the Bond world."

And I believe Ana de Armas wore a slinky gown with a deep V neck by Louis Vuitton. Ana plays Paloma in the movie.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge, best known to many of us for Fleabag and Killing Eve, participated in adding final touches to the script. She looked terrific in a black sequined jumpsuit.

The one and only M (as far as I'm concerned...), the living legend Judi Dench, was radiant in black.

The Duchess of Cornwall looked lovely in a shimmering pale blue, chiffon Bruce Oldfield gown. One of her go-to designers, Oldfield has crafted a number of timeless creations for Camilla over the years. I do think Kate and Camilla coordinated for this -- the sequins on their gowns complemented each other beautifully, adding a further 'wow' effect to photos. Camilla accessorised with Princess Marie Louise's Diamond Sunburst Brooch. The piece was last worn by the late Queen Mother. Tonight marks the first occasion the Duchess has worn it.

Now to the Duchess of Cambridge...

I think we're in collective agreement that this is one of her best -- if not the best -- evening looks to date. It's been eighteen months since Kate donned an evening gown for an engagement, and to say she delivered would be an understatement.

Kate looked absolutely stunning in a shimmering cape effect Jenny Packham gown. The designer has long been known as the 'Queen of Eveningwear' -- further cementing that status tonight. The cape flows delicately, while beautiful silver embellishments adorn the gold throughout. Styling it with gold shoes and statement earrings added another element to the flawless look. I know this is one we're going to hope Kate repeats. It's fabulous in photos, but even better in motion.

The sparkling embellishment..

More from the Telegraph:
'The Duchess of Cambridge chose a glittering gold caped dress by British designer Jenny Packham for the night, going all out with matching gold disc earrings. The draping of the design mimics the famous Bond swirl vector, used in the film franchise’s opening credits and graphics for decades.'
When the palace confirmed the Duchess would be attending, I suggested Jenny Packham's glittering Elizabeth Cape Gown with several others as a (hopeful) possibility. I thought it would be simply perfect -- befitting the glamour of the night. It was a wonderful surprise when Kate arrived in a similar design.

Kate's gown is a bespoke design combining elements of the Elizabeth gown above with the Simona lattice gown from the Autumn/Winter 2021 collection (great spot by Laura @japanese ginger).

The Duchess accessorised with her O'nitaa London earrings, first worn in Pakistan. The Chelsea-based boutique has been a leading player in the South Asian luxury couture industry for a decade.

A closer look at Kate's updo.

Kate wore her citrine cocktail ring.

And gold pumps.

Gabi identified them as the Aquazzura Fenix pumps

A very memorable night!

    4. I think this is the best she has ever looked. It reminds me of the iconic gold dress Elizabeth Taylor wore in Cleopatra, obviously Elizabeth Taylor is in a class by herself, but the Duchess looks fabulous in her own way. Perfection from head to toe.

  9. The Duchess looks absolutely stunning tonight. 10/10 head to toe. Beautiful and looks so happy to be there. I had hoped for some new to her royal jewels. I'll decide when I see a better picture of the ones she's wearing tonight. The Duchess of Cornwall always looks great in blue. Good call Charlotte, the dress she is wearing tonight is very much like one of the Sarah Burton ones you selected for her. Great job getting the blog up so fast tonight. S. ☺

    4. I'm with you Natacha, it suited the dress, the premiere and was very flattering on Kate. Beautiful!

      Delete
    5. I think her hair matched the gown beautifully. If she wore a simpler updo, the entire look would have fallen flat. She was head to toe spectacular and went for the wow factor in every aspect, even down to her fully brows and faux lashes! She was sensational. Her bigger hair (remember it’s longer now too) suited the dimensions of the gown with its wider shoulders and cape. Imagine one of her chignons with this…this updo wouldn’t have worked with any other gown either. Together? Magic!!!

      Delete
    6. Loved the look, except for the hair. I would have loved to see her with a high pony-tail... I think it would have been glamorous, and quite James Bond-esque.

    7. I agree Anett! I'm in love with the whole look except for the hair. It reminds me of a prom hairstyle that was popular when I graduated (a long long time ago!).

    8. I agree about the hair. I love the look from the front but from the side the cape and updo remind me of princess leia! LOL

    9. Well besides the fact that everything old is always new again it's so completely elegant & old Hollywood. I think that's the point isn't it. If she did a plain chignon everyone would be complaining about that. I agree with Lisa that it's just the right dimensions for the dress. So soft & pretty. Thank goodness not sleek.

  64. Let's start with Spectacular! Truly a Hollywood, star-studding dress. What an event - I hope that it in fact does encourage everyone reading this blog to head to the movie theaters! I love a movie in the theaters and I have no doubt big, blockbusters are headed our way. Now more about what happened...

Loved the new broach on the Duchess of Cornwall (she chose not to have to have the drop) - we need more Royal Jewels, especially after (yes, I said 'after') Covid :-) it would have been wonderful to see gold set jewels like this one: http://queensjewelvault.blogspot.com/2013/05/the-ruby-and-diamond-swag-demi-parure.html

Love the dress that Lea Seydoux and Lashana Lynch chose, along with the jumpsuit (wouldn't it be wonderful if Kate chose a jumpsuit at an upcoming event?) that Phoebe Waller-Bridge chose. And yes, agree that Daniel in that Pink'ish blazer was amazing.

I agree with a previous poster - didn't love Kate's hair. I realize it's long now and I have no doubt her hair is 'heavy' (i.e.: not easy to put up) but like that it was up because of the dress.

Lastly, I would have loved to see Princess Charlotte's face when her Mum got dressed and left the house. I can see her little hands wanting to touch the fabric and watching the whole process. Was anyone else surprised that Kate didn't carry a clutch? Surely she has one - and red to match the earrings in the link above would have been a nice touch.

That’s being on trend/fashion forward and looking glamorous and sophisticated done really really well. Definitely a Bond Girl moment. I will agree that the up do sits very back heavy, wonder if she tried a bit of an Edwardian style? But it looks fantastic from the front, it’s nice to see something new and is the perfect frame for her face in the dress.
I am full of awwwww and praise- that hasn’t happened in a long time in the evening gown department. Maybe she has changed her stylist or finally realised that her looks from the beginning years are still much more iconic and have aged much better then what she wore in recent years?

  75. Catherine was exquisitely gorgeous! That gown is stunning on its own but paired with Catherine it was perfection. Prince William looked very handsome and tall. What an incredibly beautiful couple.

  77. Sensational! Dressed to perfection, Kate was absolutely breathtaking. Loved every bit, especially the elaborate up-do! She has set the bar high tonight.

Kate looked gorgeous and judging by her big smile, I think she knew she knocked it out of the park! BRAVO! I also really liked Lashana's dress too. I think olive and darker skin tones can wear beautiful, bright colors and look stunning. I felt Lashana's dress portrayed exactly that!

  79. I've been reading this blog for years (love it, by the way!!) yet this is the first time I've ever commented because I simply must add to the chorus of how INCREDIBLE the Duchess looks. I'm blown away.

  80. It is a very dramatic and different look for Kate but not overkeen on it. I preferred her more ethereal look (and also the hair style) for the 2015 James Bond premiere, or the black velvet dress and stunning diamond necklace that she wore for the Sun Military awards in 2011 (Alexander McQueen gown).

  81. The hair is reminiscent of Princess Margaret's at one stage, in the 1970s.

  82. I find the gown too reminiscent of Diana's Bruce Oldfield one. Very similar silhouette. Has the padded shoulders, plunging neckline, similar across the bust, sparkles

  83. Stunning! I don’t know why I was expecting a repeat maybe it’s because of all the chatter around responsible fashion and recycling because we all know Royal ladies have their fair share of evening gowns! But when you haven’t had a formal event for 18 months go all out I say and boy didn’t she😃 The DoC looked just amazing and her smile and all accessories are perfect her hair a bit retro in style but it suits the dress style. But somethings missing.... no clutch bag which we usually see Kate carry I wonder why she didn’t have one? I’ve always loved Kates pink Jenny P gown she has worn a couple of times I hope to see her in it again. Special mention to Camilla she looked gorgeous too and Daniel Craig showing the men how formal wear can be done! Sue

  86. What a wonderful night and a big boost for film and the arts. I was glad that Catherine's choice was an oustanding look making headlines all over the world, what was needed to underscore that film is back. Thought everyone made a big effort to add to the night's glamour. Sad this will be the last of the Craig 007.

The Royals all looked at ease with each other and happy. I saw a photo of the Queen wearing a Cape dress in 1961, I thin to the Bond premier that year.

Both William and Catherine look at ease in their roll as Royals. They have both had some other great events since coming of the Summer break. William's Earth Shot project will be of great significance for the planet. Some very innovative and good projects in the short list.

Thank you Charlotte as always for such an enjoyable post. The world seems a much brighter place.

  87. Wow. Just wow. I was in the supermarket this morning and saw the the photos on the front pages of the newspapers as I was checking out and literally my jaw dropped. She looks bloody fantastic! Every bit is perfection.

  88. This is a terrific look for a James Bond film premiere. I've never been a fan of the all-sequin look, but this dress works beautifully for the event, and I love the sophisticated silhouette and the strong shoulders, which are making a bit of a comeback on the runways. My only quibble is the hairstyle, which I find overly fussy. It reminds me of 1960s complicated chignons, which isn't a bad thing, but the dress and earrings are so dazzlingly glitzy that I think a sleeker, simpler hairstyle was needed to balance them.

    1. I was thinking the same. I have pictures of my mom and aunts in 60s evening wear and their hair looks just like this! I think it would have worked with a different ensemble but not this one. Oh well, she still looks beautiful!

  89. Totally nailed the Bond girl Va, Va, Va Voom look! I mean that in the most complimentary way. The royals are the stars among the other stars. They need to do more red carpet events. This is their realm. —loving this

  90. Kate looks astounding! When I first saw her in the dress it reminded me of a dress Elizabeth Taylor wore as Cleopatra (designed my Renie Conley): https://www.pinterest.es/pin/194710383861041263/

Kate's updo was the perfect compliment to round out the whole sensational look!

  91. I guess I’m in the minority. It looks so over the top costume-y and like… dynasty/Cher/bad prom. And like many of Kates looks it’s wearing her not her wearing the look. Her hair is incredibly aging. Princess Margaret/Grace wore similar looks in the 70s ans I think it’s adding 10-20 years to her look. I just continue to think the pieces are there but they’re just never assembled quite right with Kates style.

    2. It's definitely a look and not for everybody, but adding 10 - 20 years??? There is no way she looks 50 something. Don't think the look is 'aging' her but its a retro look for sure.

  93. Oh my God! I’ve been following Catherine since she got engaged and this is the most glamorous she has EVER looked! Wow, wow, wow. The dress is perfection but the accessories perfectly complement the look as well! Just gorgeous.

  94. Did we think we knew the meaning of "stunning"? "Magnificent"? This is the new standard for those words. I can't think how much more akin to a burst of brilliant light she could possibly look than this. What an entrance! What a showstopper! Better than movie-star glamour, much better.

  95. What impress me even more than the dress itself, is how well she read the room. Something that is not always easy to do.

Yes I would have loved a repeat of the black McQueen (and I do hope we will still see that at some point), but this wasn’t the occasion for it. After 18 months of no red carpet, no glam, the occassion asked for a golden dress.

And that is what blew me away, that and the fact that she knew she looked good, and she was enjoying every moment of it.

  96. I have been mostly disappointed by Catherine’s fashion choices, well forever, at least for 19 ish years. I’ve read the comments that this look was aging & while I can see their point, I still think this is her best ever. Her makeup was fantastic, her hair as seen from the front was great, tho a bit fussy from behind. My only criticism is the very fussy, statement earrings didn’t pair with the dress. Worn with a monochrome dress they would/will work better. Definitely a case of look in the mirror before you leave the house & take one item off.

  97. Lovely gown but the hair! Her updos have always been so dated, make her look old and do not complement her gowns. This is is no different. Wish she would get a new hair stylist who can do her hair justice

  98. Kate looks fantastic here. A red carpet movie premier provides a good reason to glamour up. I dislike the James Bond franchise even as it tries to evolve with modern times. The UK puts out a lot of great entertainment, but the super spy thing never appealed to me. It’d be more riveting if it it was a riff off the Pandora Papers.

I get the need for such escapism though these days, even for a few hours :)
