The Duchess in Polka-Dot Alessandra Rich & Princess Diana's Earrings for Royal Ascot

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge concluded a very busy week with an unexpected appearance at Royal Ascot. It is the first year we've seen the couple attend on a later day (Day 4 traditionally sees a marked drop in royal attendance). Thus far, Her Majesty has been unable to attend. Given the Jubilee year significance and the Queen's passion for horses -- it is said to be as important to her as it was at the start of her reign -- it seems fitting to see family members making an effort to represent on her behalf.

This week has seen the Duchess of Cambridge beginning the week with Order of the Garter ceremonies on Monday. On Tuesday, William and Kate joined a multi-faith service on the fifth anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy where they laid a wreath and spent time with families. Yesterday, Kate convened leading political figures including Secretary of State for Health Sajid Javid, Minister for Families Will Quince, officials from the Department of Health and Social Care, and the Department for Education to share early years research conducted by IPSOS. The Duchess addressed guests during the roundtable discussion: "There is more we can all do – every member of society can play a key role, whether that is directly with a child or by investing in the adults around them – the parents, the carers, the early years workforce and more. If we come together to raise the importance of early childhood development, we’ll soon see that healthy, happy individuals make for a healthier, happier world."

It's a big weekend for the Cambridge family with Prince William's 40th birthday on Monday. It had been long rumoured the couple would host a joint bash at their Norfolk home as Kate enjoyed a low-key celebration with pandemic concerns in January. There has been no official confirmation on the family's plans, however I expect we'll hear more in the coming days.

The Royal Procession arrives.

The Duke and Duchess travelled with William's friend Arthur Vestey and his wife Martha. Arthur's father Samuel, 3rd Baron Vestey was a close friend of the Queen's, and sadly died during the pandemic in 2021. Arthur's brother William is now 4th Baron Vesty.

Princess Anne's son Peter Phillips travelled in the second carriage with his girlfriend Lindsay Wallace and the Duke and Duchess of Bedford. Lindsay, dressed in pink, accompanied Peter to several Jubilee events. A longtime school friend of Zara's, I think it's safe to say it's a very serious relationship.

The Duchess photographed with Lindsay later in the day.

Despite the very warm weather, Royal Ascot issued a little reminder about the dress code: "The Dress Code for your Enclosure still applies for entry to Royal Ascot today. Following the Royal Procession, hats and jackets will be permitted to be removed due to the high temperatures expected".

Over 300,000 people make the annual visit to Berkshire during Royal Ascot week, making this Europe’s best-attended race meeting.

There are three enclosures attended by guests on Royal Ascot week.

The Royal Enclosure is the most prestigious of the three, with recent visits by the Queen and Royal family members. Access to the Royal Enclosure is restricted, with high security on the day.

Attendance is steeped in royal history. Below, the Queen watches on as her horse Choirboy wins the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot, 17th June 1953.

Guests can enjoy luxury food and entertainment.

Not only is Royal Ascot a highlight on the racing calendar, it's also synonymous with sartorial elegance. Royal Ascot notes: "Our dress code is traditional, woven into the very fabric of our history. It was Beau Brummell, perhaps Britain’s first fashion icon, who at the turn of the 19th century dictated the dress for men in the Royal Enclosure. His sense of style is still reflected in Royal Ascot fashions today. In 2017, Royal Ascot successfully welcomed the jumpsuit as an acceptable item of clothing for the Royal Enclosure. Ascot continues to recognise key trends in the ever-evolving world of fashion."

It's been a week filled with style. Earlier in the week, Michael and Carole Middleton enjoyed a wonderful day. Carole did a little 'shopping' in her daughters' closets, sporting a hat worn by Pippa years ago and the same ME+EM bubblegum pink shirt dress Kate wore in Scotland last year.

Fashion is always a highlight of the week, so let's take a look at Kate's previous looks. For her first Ascot appearance in 2016, the Duchess donned a white lace Dolce & Gabbana dress.

In 2017, the Duchess selected a white lace Alexander McQueen dress.

Kate selected the one and only Elie Saab in 2019. The look was exquisite in my opinion, bringing all of the designer's feminine and whimsical design touches whilst creating something unexpected for Ascot. The macramé trim and silhouette lended itself beautifully to a sparkling princess look.

The Duchess evoked throwbacks to My Fair Lady and Pretty Woman in an elegant asymmetric brown and white polka-dot Alessandra Rich dress today.

The sold-out piece was described: "Alessandra Rich's Spring '19 lineup is inspired by '80s yacht club culture, so naturally there were plenty of retro patterns and ladylike silhouettes. Cut from floaty silk crepe de chine, this polka-dot dress has a ruffled overlay that drapes elegantly from one shoulder, and a belt to accentuate your waist."

The Duchess wore a custom version of milliner Sally Ann Provan's Naeva Boater hat (with thanks to Gabi). The £750 piece is described as 'perfect for Royal Ascot', with details on the website adding: "One of our favourite designs -- hand-made hand-blocked herringbone weaved straw hat with a small round crown, vented brim, and trimmed with handmade silk duchesse origami flowers. There is one large five petalled origami flower on the back."

The hat is a favourite for me and very much makes this look.

Kate accessorised with Princess Diana's South Sea pearl and diamond earrings. The Duchess has changed the pearls for a smaller pair.

Diana wore the striking earrings on numerous occasions throughout the 1990s. They often added a finishing touch to black-tie and white-tie events. It seems their provenance is unknown; they were likely a private gift. Kate's worn them on several occasions including the 2019 BAFTAs.

Middleton Maven suggests Kate's pumps are the suede Gianvito Rossi pair in 'Texas Brown'. They look like a perfect match.

A very nice end to an interesting and busy week in royal watching. I always enjoy seeing the royals at Ascot!

Have we ever seen her in chocolate brown? What a great colour combination and such a gorgeous, floaty dress, perfect for the occasion and the weather. If I remember correctly she wore a boater style hat the last time she wore an Alessandra Rich dress which was for Prince Philip's memorial ceremony. Personally I don't like silk flowers on a hat (or anywhere at all, come to think of it!) but they do look great here.

    1. Yes, she's worn brown in various shades. I can think of a chocolate-brown shirtdress, for one thing, plus a chocolate-brown and beige LK Bennett dress, a very juvenile-looking dress in the same shades from Orla Kiely, and at least one brown coat. From Hobbs? I'm not sure. And there was a light-brown sweater dress in there somewhere, if I'm remembering correctly.

  11. Hmm. I like Alessandra Rich but am not a great fan of her polka-dotted dresses. I prefer her tweed pieces and have felt that a couple of the AR dresses the Duchess has worn haven't been as flattering on her as they could have been. This one is more successful than others, though, and makes for a good Ascot look.

I love hats but am a serious minimalist when it comes to their design: I don't care for floral trim or veiling, and any bows have to be unusual for me to admire them. I'd like this hat much better without the flowers, partly because I think that the flowers and polka-dots together look a bit busy. A plainer hat, perhaps with the crown encircled by a simple white ribbon, would have balanced all the dots.

    1. I would be inclined to agree with you, Vittoria, about the flowers not being needed on the hat. Your idea of a simple white ribbon is a good one. However, this is Ascot and overly embellished hats are the norm. Kate's hat is somewhat tame compared to what some ladies are wearing. So in this case, I'd say that the swath of flowers goes with the occasion.

      Delete
    2. I've always been a great believer in not following the crowd. When it comes to fashion, when others are going all out, elegant minimalism can make quite a statement of its own. The most striking Ascot looks I've ever seen eschewed the overly-embellished hats and opted for sophisticated simplicity.

      Delete
    3. Vittoria, I agree, a white ribbon on the hat would have been perfect. The flowers look cheaply made and just not right to me, although of course the hat is expensive.
I would have preferred the dress in a solid color to better appreciate the design elements. I'm glad she didn't go for another lace dress this time.

    4. It can be fun to simply do what you want re fashion, with a sense or what is appropriate and not pay attention to either following or not following the crowd:):). I thought her look was lovely and fun and she looked wonderful. Ali

      Delete
    5. I loved the flowers on the hat, lovely whimsical touch. A ribbon would have been elegant but boring. The flowers are a touch of milliners genius.

      Delete
    6. I rather like the flowers on the hat, they are whimsical and feminine, a nice juxtaposition to the style of the boater! A ribbon for me would have been a bit 'twee', but get that perhaps some would have liked a more tailored look. She was appropriate, not overly done, and yet in her very distinct style!

      Delete
    7. I think Kate is very much her own person and doesn't follow the crowd in her choices, and whether or not we agree with her choices, she ALWAYS is elegant, poised, and photographs extremely well in all her looks. She has her own art in dressing that just works!

  15. She looks fabulous. The one fashion choice I don't understand is her constant wearing of suede shoes--suede is not a spring/summer or really much of a daytime fabric. Leather is the daytime choice. She is just lovely and has matured into even more of a beauty now. Love those earrings; now, that's a little bling!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Living in N. America, I too think that suede is for winter wear. However, in the UK, suede is worn year round. There are even those who don't wear suede in the winter, because the snow and slush can ruin the shoes. So you see, in Kate's case, it is more of a "cultural" thing, for wants of a better word. Ladies in the UK do wear suede in spring and summer.

      Delete
    2. Suede is definitely for daytime wear in North America. I wear suede shoes during the day all the time in the fall and winter. I agree that Americans tend to regard suede as cold-weather wear, but I've seen these fashion shibboleths discarded more and more often, and by a lot of people, in recent years. In fact, I now own some pairs of light-colored suede shoes that I wear in the warmer months. I just bought a pair in pistachio-green for a wedding in August.

      Delete
    3. Fashion “rules” have changed - suede is very much appropriate for daytime and year-round wear now.

    4. Vittoria,

Pistachio green sounds beautiful in a suede shoe. Wear them in good health and enjoy the wedding. I bet you get many compliments on your footwear!

    5. I live in the southwest of the USA and I wear suede shoes year-round, in fact it's considered by my co-workers as my signature look so to speak. I love Kate's suede shoe collection, and am i agreement with G.A., Vittoria, pistachio green for a suede shoe sounds divine!!

I also think very good PR, it's very important now more than ever that they are seen more and meeting the people. Obviously their work is very important to them but so is finding the balance working for The Crown. How very thoughtful and kind of Prince William to take the time to write to that poor police man's partner, who sadly lost his life fighting to protect democracy in the States. S. ☺

    1. I wrote in another post, that it really seems to be in Kate's nature, to be good natured! Think you are right on her cheerfulness and general positive attitude. Thought these comments from some recent articles speak to William and Kate's relationship and the impact she has on him, and as you say particularly because of his family history. If ever somebody was perfectly hand-picked for someone, it was Kate for William, love watching their relationship evolve and grow.

"The friend told the Daily Mail: "They honestly couldn’t be happier as a couple.

"You can’t get a cigarette paper between them. They are so tight, just inseparable.
He wanted it to be with the right person and [for it to last] forever.

"William is still very protective of his wife. The way he sees it, she is as important to the institution as he is.

"He genuinely admires the way she has just dug her heels in and stuck with it."

And I think suede shoes are worn in summer all over Europe to be honest. I mean we also wear shorts and short skirts with suede ankle boots in summer (it’s like standard festival gear). I always find it a bit strange when people judge only by their own fashion culture and completely ignore that other countries have their own “rules”.

  40. These last two weeks have been such a treat for Kate followers. (And a lot of work for Charlotte.). These two weeks have given us chances to see her participate in the very traditional ceremonies that define the British Royal Family, engagements that show support for the public, a business meeting the spotlights one of her most important endeavors, and and playful moments as a mum. In all of these, she appears fully engaged and glad to be exactly where she is.

Kate has always had a knack for looking both appropriate and stunning, but over the many events since the start of this month, she’s really showing that she’s found her place as a senior royal, and ready for the next steps in her royal path.

Just fashion-wise, I’ve been so excited to see where her shoe game is going. New colors and styles, woo-hoo. Next up, maybe she’ll experiment with some lower heel heights and non-stilettos, styles we’ve only occasionally seen on her. (Zipzipzippy)

  42. I was certain we would not see them at Ascot this year, so what a lovely surprise that they did pitch up and especially later in the week.

When it comes to fashion, I’ve never warmed up to “Kate at Ascot”. She just look too much of a combination between Pretty Woman and Eliza Doolittle. The only time it worked was the blue Elie Saab. Not that she doesn’t look good, that woman can wear a sack and still look gorgeous. I suppose like some don’t like her coatdresses, I just don’t like her Ascot outfits and this one is no difference.

    2. I would agree that it's not a shared dress. Can you imagine the uproar if Catherine's mother had access to her closet as a matter of principle; am sure that each has their own dress but have very similar style and tastes that they would have similar clothes. I am remembering a Christmas shoot with Carole that she was wearing another dress that Catherine also had. Carole is a beautiful woman and has an enviable figure, but also agree that Catherine has a more polished look to her in all her clothes and it shows.

  48. Hooray an Ascot appearance.... Stunning she looks very fresh and Kate carries this Alessandra Rich dress well the styling really suits her frame. I like the hat the flowers help take it into fun where a plain ribbon on the boater would have made the look boring and I like the choice of shoe colour as it could have been white and that would have taken her outfit straight to the 80"s. The earrings are fabulous but why would you change out the most beautiful pearls??? I hope they have been put to good use! This is an extra pleasantry regarding the RF, so I feel comfortable in remarking about her style. It.Is.To.Die.For. Catherine has that much grown into her role - composure, elegance, loving, joyful, kind, cheerful, and impeccable manners. I tell you - this woman was born into this role. Is there another who could demonstrate her confidence? Her manners? Her composure? I'm extraordinarily happy that HMQ is able to rest easily knowing that the crown will endure, given the love between William and Catherine. Nevermind the horse races......these 2 are where it's at. thanks for this post...it was filled with joy....

  54. Prince William has had a very low key 40th birthday today. He released one photo from the Jordan holiday last year with he and the kids wearing the same clothes we saw on their Christmas card (photos likely taken at the same time) but nothing like the scale of Catherine's beautiful 40th birthday photo portraits. I'm really surprised we didn't get a formal one of him (maybe in military uniform or something).

    1. I was surprised at that as well Anon. I was hoping for some official marking of his 40th birthday with a photo, and like you thought it would be in his military uniform. Who knows, it probably happened, but he opted to be low-key.

  56. she looks gorgeous and reminds me of julia roberts in the movie pretty woman when she wore a very similar earring. nice to see her keeping Diana's memory alive by wearing her earrings.
