William & Kate Visit Scarborough to Pilot 'Community Impact Day'

It was an away day in Yorkshire for the Prince and Princess of Wales who travelled to Scarborough to pilot significant funding for charities, organisations and deserving individuals in the area.

It marks the Princess' first public engagement in three weeks. William, Kate and the children enjoyed a private break over the school term break before their new routine at Windsor recommenced this week. Kate is continuing to base her work from Windsor Castle and met with the Royal Foundation's Chief Executive for an early years meeting there on Tuesday, per the Court Circular. It's not known whether they decamped to their Norfolk home, Anmer Hall, over the holiday or perhaps went further afield. Last year, it's thought the then Cambridges spent the break in Jordan. The family are still living at Adelaide Cottage, though it's understood tentative plans for a move to Windsor Castle are in the works.

Below, the Prince and Princess arriving at the Street community hub.

We may very well look back on today's royal visit and remember it as a milestone day for the royal couple. Since Her late Majesty's passing, it's been very much business as usual without any discernable changes to their roles, but we saw the first steps today. The couple are piloting a fresh take on the traditional royal 'away day', whereby they conduct a series of engagements in the area and meet locals. To bolster the power of these visits, they are leaving a "lasting legacy" through funding from "generous donations from local individuals and organisations keen to make a difference". I've long written on the blog about the power of harnessing the roles to effect tangible difference, and this is very much along the lines of the model we saw from Charles and Camilla -- combining the 'bread and butter' work with an eye on 'What can we do for those most in need?'. It's understood the couple plan to rollout several more similar days across the UK in 2023, focused on areas central to the Royal Foundation's work.

The Telegraph reports:

'The Prince and Princess of Wales are to break with the classic mould of royal engagement as they combine ribbon cutting with generating hard cash for local communities. The couple are determined to change their way of working in order to create change in the areas they visit.

Since the death of Queen Elizabeth II, sources close to the Prince and Princess have made clear that the couple intended to approach their new roles in their own, distinct way. Their outlook marks a notable shift in tone and is indicative of their desire for the modern monarchy to be more relatable.

The couple will continue to take part in more traditional visits but will combine them with the new model, representing an evolution of the royal engagement, Kensington Palace sources suggested'.

The beneficiary of the Waleses' first 'community impact day' is the Two Ridings Foundation. In an "ambitious collaboration", between Two Ridings and the Royal Foundation, the donation of £345,000 will be used to "galvanise long-term support" for young people's mental health in Scarbrough. The funding will boost the provision of safe spaces, affordable sports, outdoor activities, creative workshops and mentoring.

The Two Ridings Community Foundation enables those who wish to give across Yorkshire to set up funds and focus on societal issues which so often receive far less support than needed. These include rural suicide, poverty and children's wellbeing. The organisation strives to support hundreds of local grassroots charities to help create strong, sustainable communities. It's been twenty years since their doors opened and in that time Two Ridings has delivered £15 million into communities in need.

In addition to the generosity of donors, Two Ridings credits its tireless and passionate staff.

Their impact in numbers.

A panel assembled by Two Ridings made final decisions on the allocation of funds. One young person who was part of the process, Katie Robinson, said, "Being on the panel has given me a proper confidence boost. I know what issues young people care about and what support and services they need." Katie noted the importance of "being listened to" as a young person, and the important of providing not just crisis supports, but safe spaces and preventative supports.

Locals organisations which will be supported by the collaboration include Gallows Close Centre, the Sidewalk Youth Project, Flash Company Arts, North Yorkshire Youth, Kingdom Faith Yorkshire Trust, Futureworks, the Wave Project, Sound of Scarborough and Sivik Active. Each one is deeply embedded in local communities.

The Royal Foundation's CEO Amanda Berry said: "We have played a pivotal role in galvanising funding to support the organisations doing this vital work in the community, creating a long-lasting impact for young people in Scarborough." Jan Garrill, chief executive of two Ridings Community Foundation added: "These funds are just the start, and we hope others show the same leadership and compassion and invest in this work."

Sky News reports:

'While it is understood William and Kate are mindful of their own privileged position, Sky News was told that "they are not shying away from the issue" of the rising cost of living and are keen to "support the hard-pressed" in "parts of the country that need a light shone on them".

Prince William said: "For Catherine and I, the legacy of today, bringing people together and collaborating, showing what can be done when a community helps collaboratively is something we’d like to follow on and I hope can be represented more widely across the country."

Kate told well-wishers: "It's wonderful to see the work going on here."

Scarborough is a scenic seaside town located on the North Sea coastline. It is the largest holiday resort on the Yorkshire coast and largest seaside town in North Yorkshire. The tourism industry lends itself to a strong focus on the service industry and fishing. Locals from the area, which has a population of just over 60,000, are known as Scarborians.

Famous 'Scarborians' include Anne Bronte, Dame Penelope Wilton (Downton Abbey's Isobel), Sir Ben Kingsley and Charles Laughton. Below Scarborough's South Bay.

We last saw the Princess in Yorkshire during a visit to Batley as part of the 2020 Royal Train Tour.

More from the Scarborough News:

'Scarborough’s last royal visit was by Prince Edward Duke of Kent, who joined Armed Forces Day celebrations in June.

Anne, the Princess Royal, thanked staff at Scarborough Hospital at the height of the Covid pandemic with a visit in 2020.

King Charles III, as the Prince of Wales, visited GCHQ Scarborough at Irton Moor in 2014. And the late Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip officially opened the refurbished Open Air Theatre in 2010.'

Below a reminder of Her late Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh's 2010 visit.

Gordon Rayner reports on the day:

'Royal aides say the two words the Prince has kept repeating as he has formulated his new idea are “impact” and “legacy”, reflecting the undeniable fact that he felt the traditional way of doing things was generating neither.

The pilot of the scheme in Scarborough on Thursday had been in the pipeline before Queen Elizabeth died, but the Prince’s elevation to heir to the throne has markedly increased his ability to put his own stamp on the royal way of doing things. He has the blessing of the King, who shares his son’s desire to modernise.

The Palace is anxious to make clear that impact days will not replace traditional visits, for two reasons.

The first is that they take months to organise, because teams from the Prince’s charity - the Royal Foundation - have to work with local organisations to raise money and plan how it will be spent. The second is that the Prince recognises that simply being seen is a major part of his job if the monarchy is to retain its popularity.'

The Princess selected a sophisticated camel ensemble with a mixture of new and old pieces.

It appears Kate wore a coat by Max&Co (with thanks to Kate Middleton Style). The piece is described as: "A timeless wrap silhouette, this midi coat will add instant polish to your look. Crafted from pure wool, it has a smart lapel collar and an open front which can be closed with the matching belt that ties at the waist. Inset pockets, unlined."

The Princess wore a turtleneck midi dress by Gabriela Hearst.

Kate's tan woven waist belt is by Boden (with thanks to Middleton Maven).

Kate sported her Ralph Lauren Celia pumps.

And carried her gorgeous DeMellier London Nano Montreal in deep toffee smooth.

Kate wore her Accessorize Twisted Circle Drop earrings.

On Saturday, we'll see Kate for the England vs Papua New Guinea Rugby League World Cup quarter-final match.

  1. I think the coat is from Max&Co.

  2. So much beige/tan!

A contrasting color (red! aubergine!) for the belt and shoes would have looked fantastic.

    1. I agree. A pop of a rich, Fall color would be amazing with the camel.

  4. I think she looks splendid with the coat off!! It's a gorgeous coat but it's trying to be the same shade as the top and it's of course off by just a bit. And it's too much of the camel color. I don't that teeny purse -- I don't get teeny purses. Is gifting from the Royal Foundation something new?

  5. I do wish William would update his smart casual styld - the jumper under a jacket look is so frumpy!

    1. I completely agree--the same outfits, same worn brown suede shoes, same cotton trousers, same jacket. He really needs to up his game now that he's Prince of Wales. So "casual" just isn't appropriate anymore IMHO.

  6. I love her look. She looks wonderful. I think the all camel look works beautifully. Another wonderful event for the couple. Ali

  7. Love the coat but the tiny handbag looks like a child’s.

  8. I'm a great fan of the all-camel/brown look, which I find both elegant and autumnal. So, this dress and coat combination really appeals to me. I also like sweaterdresses very much but tend to think they look best with boots. I would have liked to see this one worn with, say, cognac or chocolate-brown boots.

The roll-neck on this dress has a problem or two -- it's both skimpy and looks as though it has tendency to ride up instead of stay completely rolled down. I'm nit-picky about that sort of thing (details matter), and I like generous roll-necks on sweaters and sweater dresses, because I think they look more luxurious. I definitely prefer roll-necks that don't ride up.

All in all, though, I think the Princess looks quite nice in this tonal outfit. Well done. By the way, in these tonal looks, the pieces don't need to be precisely the same color. Varying shades of the same color are just fine. I recently bought some trousers by Sergio Hudson who likes to put together outfits this way, because I have a coat in a similar, but not precisely the same, shade. Together, they make for a great effect.

As for the little bag, which someone criticized: yes, tiny bags like that are impractical, but people like the Princess, who doesn't really need to carry a bag, do so simply to complete a look (and have something to do with their hands). My DeMellier bags are larger and much more practical, but that's what I need; the Princess doesn't.

I love the preppie look of a sweater worn under a blazer. My husband always looks great in it. The Prince and Princess look like they just stepped out of a Brooks Brothers ad, but while I find that very attractive, I suppose it doesn't appeal to everyone.

    1. You made me smile with your "Brooks Brothers' reference!! They do look very classic and while that's not everybody's cup of tea, it's a look I love, and it does work for the both of them. One thing that is missing though, is that William might ought to consider wearing a pair of leather shoes as somebody else suggested. I can see his closet full of the same color of suede tie shoes...what to wear, what to wear :).

  9. Oh no too much camel. I really do not like the shoes and colourvof her stockings. I agree a contrasting colour or boots whould have broken and accentuated the camel. But as always she is beautiful.

  10. I love the look, down to the itty bitty purse, but then I'm all in for a monochromatic theme! She looks lovely!

  11. Taking part in selfies seems a new habit for the Princess. I think she learned it from Meghan (I don't remember she did it before Meghan arrived). This is really great, a photo with Kate is a forever nice memory for everyone. How I'd love to have a photo with her :-)

Camel is too much for me, I agree with those who mentioned. But her smile always the best what she can wear.

    3. I don't think Kate learned the more relaxed "taking selfie" style from Meghan -- I think the courtiers learned that it was OK and that the public likes it. I remember a trip years ago to NY when Kate had to wrap presents and she was not reserved then. One is tempted to say that there now is no fear of the Queen's disapproval, but I think that was never much of a concern -- just something the tabloids liked to push.

  12. Not my favourite look but I'm glad they're back to work. I didn't begrudge them two weeks off after such a hectic - and heartbreaking - time. However, I'd like to think they won't take all the kids' holidays off (I read somewhere that G, C and L will get something like 20 weeks a year off of school!). They can still be there for their kids while putting in more work - and I'm sure they will. Interesting to see how they are changing their roles - giving money does remind me of another couple...

I feel like Charlotte may have forgotten to tell us about the skirt/top/dress?

Thanks for telling us something about Scarborough. It’s nice to see multiple charities getting support, with a new way of doing things. I am a big fan of camel color for coats , it timeless. I also think a pop of color would have looked out of place unless the Princess chose one thing. As for William, think he’s trying to look approachable so he is doing the business casual look. If it’s cold and he wore a jacket and shirt, he would need a coat over it all, and he would look slightly more formal.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I get re William; however, he could wear a dress shirt, interesting fabric vest to add a layer of warmth and wool snappy navy blazer along with nice, pressed trousers and proper leather shoes and still be approachable. He's naturally approachable it seems to me.

  14. While I don’t usually care for the Princess’ monochromatic looks, this one I like. The trim fit of the dress with the contrasting belt and accessories adds more pizzazz than sometimes. (It’s also not the wide leg trousers which I wholly despise.) I’m all for helping those less fortunate…I just hope the PPoW can manage to avoid the sleazier connections to their foundation that have tripped up royals before them. Let’s face it, many rich men are not good men. Just because they want to donate to your foundation does not mean it’s wise to take their money.. it’s a tricky balance.

  20. I love a monocramatic look. Kate looks so professional and fashion forward today. I must say that her hair looks to me like a day after style. Her hair grows unbelievably fast but with that in mind, its reminding me of a school girl once again. Someone please give William a hand with his fashion choices. He looks like he is going to an entirely different event then Kate. I think leather shoes would pick up his casual look. I would like to see a loafer. His look could also use a blazer and
tie. and khaki trousers. He needs serious help.

    1. I meant to mention in my earlier comment that I wish the Princess would have a few inches lopped off her hair and wear it in a smoother, more polished style. It's looking just too long and limp. It needs a cut to give it some bounce and body, and now that the Princess has reached her 40s, the very long hair isn't looking quite apropos. Don't mistake me: I think it's fine for her to continue to wear it long. I simply feel that a trim of a few inches would make a significant difference.

  25. Do wish she'd return to her darker locks. As someone with cool undertones, when I reached 40 every hairdresser wanted to add red, it made me look sickly. Her last video the hair looked brassy and her skin unwell.

And this hairstyle also suits her wonderfully well.

This monochrome was a bit boring for me and I am not sure why. It was elegant, wonderful for the outing and the Princess looked beautiful in it, it just didn't do much for me. Maybe as others have said, a little pop of a different color or darker brown, perhaps boots...
Having said that, the sweater, coat and pants from last year on the train were WOW!

  29. One could not help but admire the Princess’ consideration and careful thoughts of the people around her.

The earth tone compliment everyone who stands next to her; the calm colour instantly draws people to her.

She is not there trying to impress, she doesn’t need any boots to make a statement. Her grace, sincerity and warmth is really what matters. People know that she cares.

She is best when she is natural, and people readily warms up to her because they could feel it. It’s real.

You are truly amazing, Princess Kate 💗💗💗

  30. I'm not a fan of this monochrome look I think the coat could have been darker or lighter for contrast. I like the colour overall but it's just a bit bland altogether. Sue in WA

  31. Ooh, that's a lot of beige. It works, but a bit of another colour would be better, I think. By the way, Anne Bronte wasn't from Scarborough. She died there (ironically on a trip to take the sea air and improve her health), and is buried there, but she was born in Bradford and lived in Haworth.

  33. I am not a big fan of this monochromatic look. It looks a little washed out. I also wish the princess would chop a few inches off her hair. It has started looking lackluster and limp. I used to have long hair like Kate and in my youth it was naturally lustrous and bouncy. But as I aged, I had to opt for shorter hairstyles to keep it looking healthy.
