The Duchess made a very stylish arrival.
The Cambridges joined hundreds of VIP's from the world of government and politics, and the garden party offered a chance to celebrate the links between Britain and India, and for all in attendance to toast the Queen ahead of her 90th birthday next week.

Interesting quotes from the evening: Whilst chatting with guests, Kate was asked how she stays so trim. "I am running after my kids", she replied. Speaking to another guests about Diana the Duchess said "Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of meeting her".

'Much of the small talk between the couple and some of the 2,000 guests – drawn from the worlds of politics, business and the armed forces and academia – was about how she and her husband were enjoying their whirlwind trip to India. Kate was also asked by party guest Prof Bulbul Dhar-James the secret to looking so trim. 'We said "how do you lose all the weight after having two kids?" And she said "I am running after my kids",' revealed Prof Dhar-James. The academic, who teaches political science at Jamia Mellia Islamia university, asked her how she kept cheery through all the engagements. 'I asked her "aren't you tired of smiling?" And she said "I'm just reciprocating. Everyone is so warm". 'They were both really gracious. She was so welcoming and warm. We told her "You look much better in person than in your photographs".'
Deepa Thomas Sutcliffe, 40, VP and Head of Communications Nissan and married to Paul Sutcliffe from British High Commission, who has just relocated from Mumbai, was one of the first the Duchess of Cambridge spoke to tonight. 'I told the Duchess I have been a huge Royal fan my whole life and I adored Princess Diana. I was five years old when she married,' she said. 'She said "unfortunately I never had the pleasure of meeting her". 'We also talked about Mumbai and she said "Mumbai is fantastic. We had a lovely time and got to sample lots of things, even a bit of cricket."
'It was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I am star struck actually. I never thought I'd get to speak to her. I think the royal couple are gorgeous, down to earth and very modern. 'The older royals are very stiff upper lip but the Duke and Duchess are willing to talk to anybody. I think they are a big hit so far. India is very heavily influenced by the British and there is a huge respect for the British Royal family.'
No doubt it is always an honour for William and Kate to represent Her Majesty abroad. This year is particularly special with her landmark 90th birthday approaching. Kensington Palace elaborated: "This tour to India and Bhutan occurs in the week before the Queen’s 90th birthday. The Duke and Duchess are honoured to be carrying out this visit on Her Majesty’s behalf as so many around the world prepare to celebrate this happy milestone. The Duke and Duchess will seek to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s service and on-going work as one of the world’s longest-serving heads of state who has made an enormous contribution to the diplomatic success of the United Kingdom."
The Duke and Duchess cut the birthday cake. The couple used a sword to cut the first slice.
Prince William paid tribute to his grandmother in a lovely speech:
"I am incredibly lucky to have my grandmother in my life. As she turns 90, she is a remarkably energetic and dedicated guiding force for her family. And I am so glad that my children are having the chance to get to know The Queen. George and Charlotte. too, will discover how lucky they are to have such a wonderful great-grandmother – a role model for the rest of their lives.
Now, it is important that everyone here tonight understands that I am here as The Queen’s representative. She may be my grandmother but she is also very much the boss! And with that in mind she has given me a message that I am privileged to read out to you all tonight. From HM the Queen: "Prince Philip and I send our warmest good wishes to all you attending this special Garden Party.
I am delighted that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have been able to join you this afternoon during their visit to your country. I have fond memories of our previous visits to India. This event today is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the enduring friendship between our two countries, our shared culture and the business opportunities we can create together. It is with great pleasure that I entrust another generation of my family to strengthen and renew our bonds. Elizabeth R."
William ended his speech saying "Now I can report back to Granny that I have done my duty! Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining with us to wish The Queen a very happy. birthday. Bahot dhanyavaad."
The Duke and Duchess raised a glass.
Again, Kate very much surprised us with her sartorial selections for the event.

DeleteI agree with Rebecca. Generally, I am a fan of an updo, but if you look at the crowd, people are not dressed in eveningwear. Kate's outfit was perfect, but an updo would have taken it up a notch and I think it's one she wanted to avoid.
DeleteThis is a wonderful dress, and they both look great. I thought the simple white dress she wore earlier an appropriate choice for the Ghandi museum, and it was very pretty, too. All her choices for the trip to India have been great.

I have really liked all of her looks on this tour and this is my new favourite, but I have a feeling I will be wowed yet again in the days to come. In reading the comments for yesterday's outfits, I have to say that this is a really tough crowd, but in my opinion, she has been spot on.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry that the DM continues to dwell on the wind story. I think the true mettle of a person is how they handle difficult situations and Kate didn't miss a beat when the weather interrupted her duty. It looked to me like efforts were made to keep this dress from flying up, but sometimes a gust of wind hits at just the wrong angle and it wouldn't matter what you did. It happens. And Kate handled it all with grace and dignity. Nothing untoward showed, much to the chagrin of the photographers I'm sure.

DeleteI can't agree here as far as her skirt flying up. I don't think the press should be blamed for her not wearing something under a full skirt after at least seven, that I can think of, incidents of her exposing her body at inappropriate moments - this being the most inappropriate of all. (there are probably more - this is just what I can think of without looking.) Of course, it is news. This aspect of her is becoming a dinner party joke -that she is an exhibitionist or does it for William's amusement. I don't believe this, but she has to be clueless on this score.
DeleteYes, the wind is hard to predict. But many of us who worked took this into account. Wearing a close-fitting skirt in questionable weather is the best solution. But if you want to wear full skirts, at least have them lined with a close-fitting lining. I did this for years - not being clever at sewing, I had a seamstress do it - it is not complicated. I used silk because it felt so nice against the skin. Using a plain slip is another solution - it looks like lining. With a slight slit in the back, it is perfectly comfortable and nothing is shown. I would have died of mortification if such an event had happened in front of clients, but Kate seems not to care or learn.
So here is Kate yet again, clutching at the back of her skirt, letting the front fly up to show her legs (as seen in the Telegraph photo) making the event a Marilyn Monroe imitation rather than a solemn event. Unable to perform the wreath-laying properly because she struggling with her skirt.
I don't blame the press at all for publishing this. It is news. It speaks of Kate's character, in a situation where every item of clothes she wears will be examined and where judging from the selections she's made, most excellent, she expects them to represent certain things. Blaming someone else for it, just excuses her for a problem she desperately needs to correct.
Gorgeous outfit but I don't like how you can see the lining above her chest. Bit of a faux pas to have it so visible, I think. Otherwise I'm thrilled she chose another unique, modern pattern and design.

DeleteDefinitely not part of her bra and is the lining of the top. You probably can't see it in the pictures of the top itself because there is nothing to contrast it with like the color of skin.
DeleteI think it is there to specifically hide a strapless bra so it doesn't show and to help with the embroidery.
If you look at the various versions of the top, a line of the embroidery is missing on Kate's. That leaves the lining visible. I wonder why the embroidery was changed in that one area.

A really nice modern take on indian components. Beading, and the "crop top" reminds me of the shirts worn under sarees. And now that we find out it has indian motifs as well. Perfect!

I gotta say, while yesterday was full on wow power, today was also really solid. Maybe the expectations from yesterday made today more mellow while it's still really great. :P
I noticed a lack of real precious stones in the jewelry so far (no bracelet, solid gold repeat earrings, costume pieces, semi precious blue earrings with small diamonds). I wonder if there is a reason behind it or if just happened to end up that way so far. And if it is a concious choice, I wonder why. Can it be to cut down on cost for security for the gems?

Is there any specific meaning behind the colours and/or those specific flowers or is it "just" because it looks aestherically pleasing? :)

DeleteThank you, Charlotte. I'm enjoying your exposition of the various elements of the tour and Catherine's sartorial choices. I expected a bit of nitpicking of various elements, but not the nail polish business (mostly) in the DM. Her toes are immaculately groomed. I suspect that she chooses a clear polish on her hands and feet as something akin to OPI Nail Envy can go on, dry in less than two minutes and not look amiss if it should chip a little. As a hands-on mom of two toddlers, I suspect that she would choose this option over having to sit idle for the polish to be applied and wait around for more than half an hour for the polish to dry without marking it. Same goes for a whirlwind tour. It's perfectly practical.
As I look at the choices made for this tour (and I liked the faux pockets on the white dress better when I understood that they might be a subtle nod to India's military), I continue to be impressed with how well the clothes achieve the numerous purposes demanded of her clothing and jewels on a royal tour.
1. Make the Duchess the centre of visibility.
2. Suit the tenor of the various occasions.
3. Give nod to the country being visited.
4. Not give offense in any element by being immodest or cliche.
5. Be comfortable & protective in the climate conditions indoors & out (AC/heat).
6. Be appropriately representative of HM.
7. Promote designers & fashion industry in both countries.
8. Photograph well.
Notice that "please everyone all the time" is not on that list. Neither is "look like a runway model" or "be a fashion icon." Though it's nice when those elements are part of the picture, they aren't really part of the job.
Bonus: For those who didn't know about wool as a "cool" fabric, now you do.

Rebecca the flowers you mention are Marigold, which are considered very auspicious in India. They are used in a majority of religious ceremonies and festivals, and offered to a vast variety of Indian gods & godesses. Indians have an old saying 'Atithi Devo Bhav', which means that for us guests are like God, and hence we must treat them appropriately. Therefore, I believe marigolds are vastly used in various occasions involving guests and first time visitors to the country. Hope this helps :)

ReplyDeleteI am just so glad that she is wearing new and different things during this tour instead of the usual go to colors and silhouettes. Beautiful dress!! Like the anon above, I wish the lining was not visible above the embroidery on the chest. Also wish that the earrings were not costume jewelry and that she had done something more with her hair. She really used her hair as an accessory during the Aus/NZ tour which I think added polish to many of her looks.

DeleteAnon 22:35 welcome to our club of 2! I was reluctant to say anything because everyone loves this, but I don't get it at all, it's like she's wearing a giant henna tattoo, just too much from top to bottom. In my opinion it's a bit drab, she looks so much better in color.
And I also think it makes her look like a plank, too straight and boxy, like she's a 12 year old boy! Nothing to show off her femininity or slight curves, I don't think it's figure flattering at all.
Phew. Got all that out of my system! I thought it might grow on me but I just don't like it :(

Kate has definitely acknowledged India through her sartorial choices. My favourite was last night's gown. That was Indian beadwork and embroidery on that Sapphire Packham gown. Total fave! :)

I wish they had more engagements in Delhi, I know that city like the back of my hand and I would have so enjoyed watching them travel around and explore more. In Agra also, I would like to mention, besides the beautiful Taj Mahal, there are other monuments of great historic dominance including the Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri. India is so so rich in history and monumental importance that it is impossible to tour so much in such little time. It probably looks like I'm bragging a lot.. But I think a fellow Indian or someone who's been to India can support my statement. From the beautiful Himalayas in the North to the Thar desert in Rajasthan to the holy Ganga river, to the delicious delicacies from North and South India (including the dosa, yum! :) ), the IT hub if my hometown, Bangalore and the innumerable monuments, traditions and culture, India is a country everybody will fall in love with! :)
Anyways, really enjoyed Day 2 of the Royal Tour. Looking forward to their luncheon with India's favourite PM, Narendra Modi tomorrow! :) :)

Yes, it is those conversations which put a stamp on the visit especially with the tour moving fast, and with no speaking engagement for Kate. The answer about losing weight after child birth is funny, reality and on the spot good response. It kind of translates she has been involved and busy with her kids. It is actually pleasantly duplictable by other parents. No diet detail, etc. Perfect, just hope one has been busy or running after the kids.

That was a reasonable answer, more geared towards listening than explaining. Responses at happy gatherings can be tricky since the mood and times of the surrounding puts a person at some comfort level. That was a 34 years old Kate’s wisdom, at a 90th birthday party.

When I was young, there were so many Diana supporters, but now it does sometimes feel that I'm alone in my interest - amongst the republicans and those who rather like the monarchy, but don't have a specific interest. The wedding was the last time everyone was talking - maybe when Harry marries, interest will pick up again. There is much better quality costume jewelry available at many high street stores that would look much nicer, IMO, without seeming like she's showing off. (For example - remember her stunning Zara rhinestone collar necklace?) A beautiful outfit like this one, with the casual hairstyle and cheap earrings, looks unbalanced.

DeleteAlso Kate has often wore very expensive clothing around needy people anyways. Heck her clothes in India have been very expensive. Her accessories have all been new and somewhat expensive too, minus those 10 pound earrings. Kate just doesn't seem to be into diamonds much imo.
And just to be clear, I'm not complaining about the cost of her clothing. Showing respect to the host nation is important and exactly what India deserves - it has come REALLY far for a country who has only had the freedom to prosper since getting its independence less than a century ago.

Not to mention elsewhere. And don't get me started about the food request. If I were a chef in that hotel I'd have been so insulted it's not even funny. I get it; they don't want to get a stomach bug and understand why; it's tough to cancel appointments when that's why you're there. But requesting no meat -- when William is certainly no vegetarian -- implied that the food handling is dodgy -- in a five star hotel.

ReplyDeleteThis two-piece assemble is just perfection. The style, the embroidery, the lightness of it for a garden party. Her hair looks great in waves - slightly bohemian - just works.
She has knocked it out of the park with her four favorite UK designers. I do hope we see a traditional Indian assemble tomorrow or before she leaves India. Maybe at the celebration in the evening. I was hoping we might see her in flat sandals as well.

DeleteI love this look! I think Kate is entirely appropriate in all of her styling choices. It is not a super formal affair so I think it was a good call to do a half updo. I think a full updo would have looked too formal. Looking at the attire of thee other guests, I think her choices are very appropriate. Same goes for real versus costume jewelry. I think it would have looked out of place at a garden party to be dripping in diamonds - as much as I love to see her in them!!

DeleteI just love this dress! She has not put a foot wrong in my opinion. My all time favorite gown was the one she wore in Malaysia, but the gown from last night just took over that spot. She just sparkled and truly looked like a princess. I am so thankful that Charlotte is working overtime so that we can enjoy all of the pictures from their trip. ReplyDeleteThis outfit hit all the right notes. While this is an evening event...it is a Garden Party...Birthday Party. So the half up do is entirely appropriate. And I love the fact that her hair has been nice loose beachy waves today...I imagine the humidity is to blame for that. But I really love it. Very youthful. Even her make up seems quite perfect. The nude lip and a little bit less eyeliner....it even looks like she might be wearing eyeshadow on the low half of her lids. Perfect with the outfit.
I agree she could have gone with a pop of color on the earrings but these work perfectly fine. This outfit was a 10 for me.
Do you think the skirt has had a chemise added to go under the crop top for modesty? This may explain the lining look other readers have commented on.
DeleteHi Michelle I think the lining is there for technical reasons to do with the embroidery & nature of the fabric. The top embroidered layer is fine silk & it can't sustain that much stitching without support. Without the lining the silk would start to tear very quickly. She'd only get a few wears out of the dress before restoration work would be required. I collect embroidered textiles & fine silk is very tricky & fragile. You're right about the modesty aspect and that's a bonus.

So far except the Bohemian looking dress, Kate had been wearing clothes by Western designers with Far East motif and style. Where and when is she going to wear products either made in India or designed by Indians?
DeleteThe blue gown had it's beading sewn in India and the dress she played cricket in is a design by a famous Mumbia designer (I think I read all that and remembered it correctly). :)

I know a lot of news sites are talking about her "lack of pedicure" (they are nice and clean and polished clear not sure if they were expecting bright cha cha red) does anyone know if like in Malaysia, where she could not wear nail polish out of respect, is there anything that she might have to do this tour that would require this? ReplyDeleteThis might be my favorite look of the tour so far! Love the outfit--it's something I'd pick out myself--and I'm always a fan of her hair half up. It's a great way to get it out of her eyes while still keeping her signature long-locked look. I might have preferred her hair up with this particular outfit, but that's a tiny quibble considering that we got an updo last night.

ReplyDeleteLove the outfit, so vibrant and Kate looks fabulous in black and white. At the best (and there were a couple of LBD missteps) Temperley and Kate make a great combination. The crop top is really wonderful and a great proportion on her. And the light look perfect for a garden party.
ReplyDeleteI like her hair this way too. In so many videos she is touching her hair or tossing it or fiddling with it. This would be a great style for her to wear more often. It keeps it off her face and yet it is quite youthful and not severe like her ponytails and the updo that Victoria of Sweden features. Like Victoria, Kate has a strong chin (better than a weak one) so a soft look is good but one that also keeps her hair contained.
Can't agree on DM unless they hired a wind machine. The dress flying up is Kate's sole responsibility and I was sorry to see it happen, especially at a memorial wreath laying. No one should be making apologies for her. Even if the papers made no comment, all the pictures about that event become about her skirt, and not the activity. Even if no one took photos, those around her are still exposed to it, and at a memorial, she ended up showing her legs in an unbecoming way.
The wind can be hard to predict but there have been too many incidents of out of control skirts with Kate that look unprofessional and not royal. (I wish I had a bet on there being a wind incident - it has become a defining characteristic of Kate.)
She looks good in full skirts and this dress has graceful lines (although I don't like the pockets), but it should have been saved perhaps for a completely indoor event and a slimmer skirt worn for an exposed outdoor event. At the very least, she could have such an expensive dress lined with a straight lining. Getting this right is an important part of being royal.
But the garden party has improved my mood, so having said my say, I'll see what comes next.

My mother once told me that a woman over 30 should never leave the house without lipstick on, and I still follow that advice. That being said, Kate is still absolutely stunning tonight.

Exposure to an old and colourful nation and what does the British press run but stories of toe nails and wind blown skirts. How embarrassing that this is what the press thinks is important and what the public wants to read. Perhaps that is why they are heading out of business.One would hope that the public are not just interested in toe nails.

ReplyDeleteYesterday Kate's clothing choices were full of color, today they are monochrome. The white was lovely and appropriate for memorials, though of course I wish she had chosen a pencil skirt for the outdoor events during the day. I am not crazy about the black and white for the garden party. The motifs are nice but a bit stark, and I wish she had worn a muted color. I do like the earrings, both pairs she wore today. Interesting that she is wearing her own costume jewelry rather than royal jewels.

The only Temperely dress I've ever liked on Kate. So appropriate for the event - a party dress that pays homage to her hosts without being costumey. I think if she'd have worn it anywhere else, I would have found it as unnecessarily busy as I do her other Temperleys. I do sort of laugh at her selection of new shoes: two new black strappy sandals? Two new pairs of pointy toe nude pumps? Girlfriend can certainly afford them, and nobody's worrying about TRHs' going overweight on luggage, but if it were me, I'd have a little more fun with my shoe allowance!

I'm an Indian American, and although I certainly cannot in the least speak for all of India or the Indian diaspora, when I first saw the Duchess's outfit this evening, it immediately reminded me of a sartorial take on a pavadai, which is a traditional South Indian outfit typically worn by young girls, or as a half-saree for older girls (with a shawl that mimics a sari look, but is easier to wear)...
Re: PW's suit. I fully agree with the commenter who said that a dark gray or black suit would have better matched the Duchess's outfit! Maybe even with a blush tie, if I go that daring :) But, his suit/tie/shirt colors did wave a figurative nod to the colors of the UK's union flag...maybe intentional, maybe not?
I feel like a kid in a candy shop this week with all of the beautiful outfits that the Duchess is wearing! Thank you Charlotte for making our week that much more exciting and fun!

Don't want to be a negative Nellie, but am I the only one who does not like this dress? Happy they got to do a birthday tribute to the Queen. Are we going to do a card to the Queen?
DeleteI could not but GASP at the atrocious amount of price tag for a dress that seems to have been machine embroidered! wowie kazaowieee!! even if I were a millionaire, I would never ever pay this much money on a dress! yes Kate is a royal but even for royalty, this is an absurd amount of price. this is Insane!!! If it was a saree that is nine to 11 yard long with intricate embroidery work all done by hand just like Sabyasachi Sarees are, then it would be worth the price tag but for a top and skirt? As they say in America, No way jose!!!!
