The Duchess of Cambridge Graces the Cover of British Vogue, Latest News & BLACK Giveaway

We had expected we might see a royal surprise tonight, suspecting it might be birthday portraits of Princess Charlotte - instead Kensington Palace announced the Duchess of Cambridge will grace the cover of the June issue of British Vogue.

Kate's patronage the National Portrait Gallery has collaborated with British Vogue on a series of portraits of the Duchess, shot by photographer Josh Olins on the Sandringham estate in the Norfolk countryside in January, and styled by Vogue fashion director Lucinda Chambers. The Duchess used professional make-up artist Sally Branka, who persuaded her to forego her usual black eyeliner in favour of a fresher look.

Photographer Josh Olins was thrilled to be asked to take the photos:

"It's a privilege to have been chosen to photograph the Duchess of Cambridge for the centenary issue of British Vogue and an honour that two of those portraits will hang in the National Portrait Gallery, This was the Duchess's first sitting for a magazine and she was a joy to work with, a natural. I am extremely grateful to Alexandra Shulman for placing her faith in me for such an important and historic assignment."

A spokesperson said: "British Vogue has given a platform to some of the most renowned photographers in the country's history. “She is incredibly grateful to the team at Vogue and at the National Portrait Gallery for asking her to take part. She would like to thank Josh Olins for being such a pleasure to work with."

More from the official press release:

'Forming part of the magazine’s centenary celebrations, Vogue 100: A Century of Style showcases the range of photography that has been commissioned by British Vogue since it was founded in 1916. With over 280 prints from the Condé Nast archive and international collections being shown together at the National Portrait Gallery for the first time, the exhibition tells the story of one of the most influential fashion magazines in the world.'

Vogue's story shares quotes from editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman:

"It's a huge honour and incredibly exciting for us to have HRH the Duchess of Cambridge featuring on the cover of British Vogue and as part of our centenary issue," Vogue editor-in-chief Alexandra Shulman said today. "For me personally it has been a wonderful experience to have had the opportunity to work with her on this, and I am immensely proud of what we have produced. This special issue of the magazine is very close to my heart as it had to reflect on 100 years of British Vogue, and so I am hugely grateful that we have been able to continue with our tradition of outstanding royal portraiture with these pictures."

London-born Josh Olins discovered his love of photography while studying art at Middlesex University and began working as a photographer's assistant in the early 2000s. Olins has been working with British Vogue for the past seven years and has shot a number many of the world's top models and actresses including Emma Watson and Lady GaGa since. Vogue notes his images are "defined by their imaginative yet natural style and their precise composition".

Vogue

The Duchess is following in the footsteps of her late mother-in-law, Diana, Princess of Wales who graces the cover of Vogue four times. The photos in August 1981 were taken by Lord Snowdon. The next two covers were shot by Patrick Demarchelier in July 1994 and December 1991  She also appeared on the cover posthumously in October 1997, when a photograph taken from 1994 was used for a special tribute issue.

Vogue

On Wednesday, the Duchess will visit the National Portrait Gallery to view the 'Vogue 100: A Century of Style' exhibition. It will be the first time Kate has seen the two portraits of herself displayed in the gallery. Wednesday will be a particularly busy day for the Duchess who has two other engagements that day - a visit to Hampton Court's Magic Garden, marking the official opening of its new children's play area. Kate will also attend a lunch reception at the Anna Freud Centre. Nicholas Cullinan, director of the National Portrait Gallery said Josh Olins perfectly captured Kate.

"Josh has captured the Duchess exactly as she is - full of life, with a great sense of humour, thoughtful and intelligent, and in fact, very beautiful. Not only do they reflect her love of the countryside, interest in photography and championing of the National Portrait Gallery as our very committed patron, but they also encapsulate what Vogue has always done so brilliantly - to pair the best photographers with the great personalities of the day, in order to reflect broader shifts in culture and society. We had fun in making and choosing these images, and I hope that comes across."

When Kensington Palace tweeted they had surprises in store we hadn't anticipated seeing Kate on the cover of Vogue. It's a wonderful collaboration and the photos are 'very Kate'. She looks relaxed against the backdrop of the Norfolk countryside and I love the way she's styled in a nautical striped top and a crisp shirt - very much her typical style. There's been rumours about US Vogue Editor Anna Wintour's attempts to get Kate on the cover for years. No doubt it's an editor's dream and a splendid coup for the magazine. As one of the world's most photographed women, it's fascinating to see Kate posing for a magazine shoot. What do you think of the photos?

What brands did the Duchess wear for her Vogue shoot? Kate was very much involved in selecting pieces for the images. The Duchess wore the $75 Women's Striped Tee by Petit Bateau. It is described: "This tee with an admiral neck is made in our original 1x1 rib highlighted with very graphic stripes in the same width. It has a straight cut and a pocket that features a surprising vertical stripe in the opposite direction to the tee stripes."

The top is also available in two other colourways.

Kate wore the top with Burberry trousers.

Anna believes they are the £695 Burberry Stretch Boot-Cut Trousers.

Burberry

The Duchess also wore a striking charcoal brown coat by British brand Burberry. The $7,500  Double-Breasted Suede Coat features a wide revere collar. The tapered waist has an integrated martingale to cinch the silhouette and a softly pleated skirt for movement.

The amazing Anna identified Kate's hat as the £38 Wool Felt Fedora hat by Beyond Retro Vintage Clothing.

The brand prides itself for "sifting through a tidal wave of second-hand product to bring you the very best in trend-led vintage fashion. But only 1 in 1,000 items make it to the shop floor. What an amazing end to an unforgettable month - I do love it when the royals surprise us. :)

The June 2016 centenary issue of Vogue will be available nationwide and ready to download from Thursday, 5 May. 'Vogue 100: A Century of Style' is at the National Portrait Gallery until 22 May (If interested in viewing the exhibition, please click here). I don't know about you, but I shall be particularly eager to get my hands on a copy and see the remaining photos. There's at least four more portraits according to various media outlets.

Moving on to the latest royal news. Kensington Palace announced an exciting new initiative for Prince William during the week. The Prince will convene a new industry-led taskforce to tackle cyberbullying. I think in many ways, it very much ties in with William, Kate and Harry's focus on mental health, as all types of bullying can have a detrimental effect on one's mental health.

Cyberbullying is incredibly topical at the moment, and I'm sure most of us who are active on social media have either witnessed or experienced online abuse; as an adult it can be quite shocking and upsetting but it's particularly difficult for teenagers who are increasingly spending so much of their time online, where schoolyard bullying follows them into their homes due to social media. Cyberbullying takes on many forms too, be it verbal abuse, threats, harassment, denigration and cyber-stalking to name a few. The statistics are startling; a survey carried out by Bullying UK found 56% of young people said they have seen others bullied online and 42% have felt unsafe online. As technology progresses, the problem is becoming rapidly prevalent.

More on the taskforce from the official press release:

"This is an issue that the Duke feels strongly about. While most social platforms and service providers do have systems in place for reporting or removing abusive content, there is no common industry standard or commitment to tackle the issue, nor is there an existing single repository of information for users on how to address it.
The taskforce will take existing models of good practice for reporting abusive content on individual networks and develop a set of commitments for the industry to sign up to, to collectively tackle the issue. It will consider the development of a single resource of up to date practical support and information for young people affected by cyberbullying, with advice on how to get help. It will also work to help parents and adults to better understand cyberbullying, and give them the confidence to find appropriate help and resources to support children affected by the issue."

I look forward to hearing more about the taskforce in the coming weeks.

Whilst we're discussing the princes, we really must share this fantastic video of Harry and the Queen, filmed ahead of the Invictus Games. It's so much fun and for an excellent cause. Harry has a rare talent for bringing out the fun side in everyone. :)

So many great things going on around them now!! Heads together, William and cyberbullying, the Obamas and now this! It's really a great time to follow them and it's been many great things ever since the tour :) I hope this keeps up.

I love the shoot so far. The cover is a bit too retouched for my taste, but still very stunning! I love the black and white one, especially her little smile wrinkles on her nose! Adorable! Can't wait to see the rest of them!! :D

  2. Stunning photos, very natural. LOVE that style of hat on her.

It would have been nice to see a photo of HRH staring straight into the camera lens but that is a picky, personal preference and no reflection on the beauty and quality of these portraits.

    Looking forward to May 4th!

Also, do we think she borrowed most of the clothes for this shoot? Or are they her pieces? I know she normally doesn't accept gifts or clothes like that, but do we know how royals do on photoshoots? I know Crown Princess Mary of Denmark did one where she ended up buying one of the skirts she wore afterwards but that the clothes were not hers before the shoot. And I know that is how it's usually done, but I wonder with the BRF. They feel more "stiff" with such things :P

    1. It gave a stylist name in the press release, so I would assume the clothes were not HRH's own.

    2. Well one example (IF) of accepting freebies (which stunned me completely) was when she wore a shirt for the National Park tour from an Australian designer. Somebody got into contact with the company and they let them know that they sent it to Kate as a gift.

  11. What a lovely surprise to wake up to in Australia! Such beautiful photos, which look like they capture the essence of the Duchess. It's true that country, casual chic is what she does well and therefore must feel most comfortable in. We should bear this in mind when we look at her more formal wear - that she truly has undertaken a style evolution and most of the time is out of her comfort zone fashion wise.

A fitting cover for the most photographed woman in the world who does it with such grace and ease. Happy birthday vogue and bravo Catherine!

    1. The Queen did quite a bit of acting when she was a teenager during the War at Windsor Castle. She is obviously talented, and it is nice that she has let us see her ability in a couple of videos. "Good evening, Mr. Bond" has become a signature line, and "Oh really! Please!" probably will, too. Her deadpan "Do you suppose when we open the doors anyone will be there?" gave me the giggles. Her timing is so perfect, and of course her diction is impeccable. I hope she and Harry make more videos!

Well, it's Vouge, and big brows are very in :P

      Delete
    2. That was my first reaction, too, Mary. The heavy brows, espcially in the black and white picture, look quite harsh. My favorite picture is the one in the striped tee shirt, with the fence. The colors are lovely and warm, and the eyebrows are a bit less apparent. In all of these pictures, Kate's smile is wonderful as always, and I love the coat and hat. But lightening the eyeliner while darkening her eyebrows was, to me, not our Kate and not flattering.

      Delete
    3. Don't like the brows either.

      Delete
    4. They gonna stick around for a while, it seems.:-(

She looks so much better without that heavy eyeliner. Even the make-up artist backed that aging theory, though put it nicer:-)

      Delete
    5. Ditto! Those eyebrows are way too overpowering. I didn't realize it at first but the "cowgirl" photo felt really heavy even though she was smiling beautifully (I think the clothes didn't help either). Honestly a bit disappointed, for Vogue there really wasn't anything fashion about them. Striped tee picture was better, effortless beauty but still no oomph

This blog not only has an amazing authoress in Charlotte, but an amazingly diverse and kind group of people who comment. I so very much appreciate the concern and inquiries over and about my health. I have just had time to sit down and catch up with everything and vote in the polls, as well as read the comments from the last week or so of the blog. I am okay. I had another procedure on Monday and it has been a crazy roller coaster.

Plus. in true Courtney fashion we have decided to buy a home in the midst of two surgical procedures and an imminent deployment for my husband. We have spent many days in the last week, when I could, looking at home. New and used, one and two story, even a few three story and we are narrowing it down. I am just proud we narrowed it down to the area we want to live. That was hard enough. So I will probably end up moving a home full of goods, three children and a dog by myself this summer while my husband is gone. Never a dull moment.

Random thoughts about the real reason we come to this lovely blog:
Love, love, love the video with Harry and the Queen. Amazing and the queen trumps any president currently alive, and some not alive. She has had an amazing life and I hope it continues to be so. I am sure with cheeky Harry and George around she will be kept on her toes.

The Vogue cover is a lovely photograph of Catherine and I love that she agreed to be on the cover. I just hope between the cover, the video about for the run with the three, and seemingly an uptick in visibility people remember this is what they (we) have wanted and asked for and be happy with the current changes. That we can just be content and not jump paces ahead.

I would love if cyber bullying, and bullying in general, become Will's "thing". That would give the trio each a sub-group or focus on the mental health issue. Children and early intervention from Catherine, veterans from Harry and cyber bullying/bullying from William. I think they could bring a large amount of much needed attention to areas much in need of more press time and more awareness. I truly believe that the stigma attached to seeking help, admitting you need help and admitting you may have a mental health problem needs to be addressed. A very good friend of mine lost her husband to suicide earlier this month. It was due to his PTSD due to his military service. It isn't "masculine" for a soldier, or retired soldier, to admit they need help. We need to get rid of those thoughts. I really hope the Cambridges and Harry can shine some much needed light on these issues.

Yaaaay! So glad to see you are ok! Sounds like you got your hands full!!! :O

Also, I think while Williams focus on bullying is great, it's kind of woven into Kates child focus. And I think his current intended focus on male mental health is something that can give more impact. A strong male authority such as William, from such a traditional setting as the royal family speaking out for male issues with mental health can be a HUGE deal! It's a group that is HEAVILY stigmatized and discouraged from talking about their feelings. They are "supposed" to be strong and solid because of gender roles and having a rather "traditional" man like William speaking out for them can be very powerful! Just because men are way less likely to ask for help or tell someone (and when they do, they are way more likely to just get a "pat on the back" and get told to cheer up) suicide among men is way higher than it "need" to be. So I personally think that is a great focus for William and his position, while I ofc think that he is doing great with the cyberbullying as well!

Courtney, I'm so glad things are looking up for you, especially your health. Best of luck in moving! Also, my sincere thanks to your husband and his colleagues serving in the military. I'm sad to hear about your friend's husband. That is very sad.

If William can make a difference; if he and Kate and Harry can all make a difference in the way mental challenges are perceived, perhaps people contemplating suicide will think more and more of alternatives. Of course we can all help by treating one another with dignity and respect, including on this blog. Most of the time I believe we achieve that goal, but there is always room for improvement.

  24. Courtney from NC30 April 2016 at 23:32

I love the photos of the youngest grands and great grands with the Queen. Those will be so very cherished by the children as they grow. Charlotte is such a cute little things and of course George has a very mischievous look on his face. Like he is either cooking up his next plot or he was just chastised for one. Love him!

Also, love the photos of him with the Obamas. The adorable pajamas and the oh so serious expression on his face when he is shaking hands. Like he already appreciates the importance of the event. The photo of Catherine looking at him and giving him that encouraging, loving motherly look is beautiful. Truly a "picture that is worth a thousand words".

I liked the dress she wore when the Obamas dined at Kensington. Very Catherine. Not Kate but Catherine. I think the re-released dress that is similar to the one she wore in the brighter shades is the better version.

I also like the clothes worn for the Vogue shoot. Also very Catherine.

As far as clothing, here is how I have voted so far:

Evening wear - I voted for the wonderful blue Jenny Packham. It really was in a class all it's own as far as the other evening looks she modeled during this tour. Other than the Packham, I liked the Temperley two piece look the second best and the Beulah red gown third best. She is really growing into such an elegant woman. She has always been elegant but her movements are becoming more naturally elegant.

    Best Day Wear:
I think the winner for most people was obviously the Khan dress that last day. It was a beautiful look and quintessential Catherine and that is exactly why it wasn't my pick for look #1.

I voted for the cape and skirt she wore in Bhutan. It was out of her comfort zone, paid tribute to the local culture without being tacky and she looked amazing. Plus, she looked wonderful in the action shots as well.

The Emilia Wickstead white dress and the Desdemona were also day wear but a little different, a little fancier than the other looks and I loved the repeats.

Casual look was easy for me and I chose the look she wore for the Tigers Hike.

Earrings: I broke up into two categories. Fancy and casual.

Casual: The filligree ones she purchased in India were my favorite earrings worn in a casual setting.

Fancy-ish: I chose, and voted for, the lavender amethyst Kiki's although it was a very close contest with the custom made green Kiki's.

Oh I wouldn't rule out PC photos as well. I mean... one doesn't rule out the other, and the timing of these pictures is probably because the magazine is printed now and the pictures hung. Not because of the anniversiry and birthday.

    3. That would be excellent, Charlotte. It would really make everyone's week, I'm sure.

Oh, I know, Rebecca. I guess I had in my head that if pictures were released it would be for the Sunday papers. However, it will be much nicer if they are released on her birthday.

Rebecca - I looked at some photos of the festivities happening in Sweden and I love how genuinely happy the SRF, including the spouses and children, always looks. Victoria and Sofia also look amazing for any time but amazingly stunning this close to having a baby.
I love how CP always looks so proud of himself when he is out with Sofia. She looked amazing and loved her shoes. She is a good sport for even leaving the house for a large gathering, let alone looking amazing and wearing a kicky pair of shoes. It has been a busy few weeks in the royal world but since I wasn't on that match I am now completely exhausted from catching up on all my different royal family posts in one sitting.

I still think cheeky, mischievous George and equally mischievous, yet adorable, show stealer Estelle should meet. She looked just as cute shaking hands today as George did in his little man PJs shaking hands with Obama.

  44. I admit to having a similar reaction to Kate on the cover of Vogue as I did with the casual photos of Diana. Unexpected, fresh, simple, and stunning.

The video is hilarious and I cannot help but giggle at the Queen's "Oh, really! Please." There's no tiara in my closet, or black handbag on my sofa, but I had the same reaction!

Bullying... AMEN William. It's a very important issue and deserves serious attention. The internet is a wonderful thing when it is NOT being used in a destructive manner. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to do exactly that and we see examples of it everyday.

AHHHH!!! What a lovely surprise to see Kate in Vogue! It was such a natural look for her & the few photos in this peek embody what I suspect is truly her.....a chic yet humble country-loving gal.

I immediately noticed the bold brows!! She looks beautiful but I do think more sculpted brows favor her more....I'm now realizing her thinner, sculpted brows in the "Heads Together" video is what made me go "hmmmm, she looks so elegantly mature & refined". This is NOT a criticism at all just an observation!

Also, remember her thick, darkened brows for the SUnday Remembrance Day balcony appearance (with Queen Maxima)! Wonder if that was around the time the Vogue photo shoot happened?!

  77. Wowza! Talk about surprises that blow you away! Now THIS took us completely by surprise. The past two months have been like a piñata of Kensington Palace treats and surprises!! These pictures are splendid. And I think it's the perfect time for HRH to grace the cover of British Vogue. First off. British. Vogue. Centenary issue. Nothing else could/would be appropriate as the first cover for HRH. Also, I think it's the right age and the right time for HRH. She's not newly married, i.e. has fully established herself as a member of the Family, and has produced two children (and yes, as I've mentioned before on the blog, regardless of how we feel about it, producing heirs was part of the expectation/duty). She's also nearing her mid 30s which means it's peak time to be a blossoming, youthful beauty. (Yes, before anyone jumps at me, 40, 50, 60 yr. old women are gorgeous, but this is a fashion and image world and mid 30s is where "youth" peaks). She looks splendid, very HRH. Gorgeous eyes, smile, etc. Big brows ARE back and she ROCKS THEM. My two quibbles: the cover is gorgeous but the coat flaps make her look really big/oddly broad on top. Second, what's up with all the browns & beige? The cover has a Fall Issue look & feel and definitely NOT summer one. That disappoints me, I'll admit. Too much of a fall palette that washes out HRH. I would have loved pinks, fuchsias, reds, some color & summer backdrop, again, a celebration of HRH's mature youthfulness. Maybe there are other pics with that kind of palette? Anyhow, thanks Charlotte for posting this amazing and surprising post! I was procrastinating on a project and ambled over here to look at comments/have a bit of fun but oh my! if there was ever reason to procrastinate, it was this post. Silvia

    1. No one could make such a beautiful woman as Kate look bad, but this photographer and make-up team came very, very close. I am feeling so frustrated by what he did to our lovely Kate in those cover photos. The other photo is pretty but so pedestrian as to make you think the photo was not taken for a Vogue assignment.

The President and First Lady and their colleagues were a hoot. Very nicely done. I am so happy that Harry had that special moment with his grandmother recorded for posterity and it was a fun one, no surprise.

The black gloves are the ones I would choose.

I am thrilled that she has a nautical top but in red as we had so often wanted her to wear because we got tired with the blue and white repeats! It is a great look. 109. I am just imagining the "horror" if it had been American Vogue. I can already see the DM fuming with rage then going on to write a hundred articles dissecting each hair on her eye brows.
On a side note I don't know if anyone else feels the same but has it occured to any of you that the reason the British media is on Kate like that is possibly because they still can't get over the fact that she actually got married to William and is still happily married. Considering all the teasing and name calling of her and her family before she got married.

  129. Love these photos and love the gloves! Black would be my choice - great competition, thank you!

  130. What beautiful photos. Kate could be an Aussie girl standing in the outback! She looks so fresh and happy. I love the change in eye makeup - it seems to make the colour of her eyes pop. I can't wait to see the rest of the pictures.
I love the gloves - my choice would probably be black.

  131. I've always coveted those gloves but couldn't justify the expense! If I am the lucky one I would love a black pair...

So glad that the Duchess has experimented with reducing the solid eyeliner look - I've always felt that it was too 'hard' - it does work for her but I feel that it needs softening a little so hopefully when she sees these pictures she might consider tweaking her make up style a little. But all in all when you think what she has taken on, and in such a horrendously public arena, I think she's doing marvelously well on the whole - kudos to her. Eyeliner is the least of her issues!

  133. Kate looks youthful and fresh. The natural look and less make-up suits her.

  134. The softer make up looks lovely, but the brow is a tad heavy in contrast to the rest of the tone. Also, I do not like the hat. It seems forced and makes her look like an indie pop artist. It just seems too far from her usual style. The Photoshopping has also made her hair look very red.

    Gloves in black!

  137. The pictures with the hat and coat remind me of the look I suggested for Kate when we did our first styling for her. I love that casual look. I don't love the makeup. No apparent foundation or blusher, clumpy mascara, and heavy brows are not her style, and I am glad her makeup was much more beautiful than that during the tour. She should have looked like herself for her first Vogue cover.

Lovely pictures of Kate doing what Kate does best! Relaxing in the country!
But I'm here to win a pair of gloves for my dear friend, bluhare.
    Black, please and thank you.

  140. Black gloves for me please.
I was so surprised last night when the Vogue pictures came up on my twitter feed - totally unexpected! Beautiful pictures, my favourite is the one where Catherine is wearing the striped top. My least favourite of the four (no one else seems to have noticed the black & white image at the NPG is different from the other b/w picture) is the one on the cover.

  142. This is my first post ever. I am an avid reader of this blog and all things Middleton. I am in US but born in Gibraltar and raised in Spain. I would love the Bow gloves in Black. I owned a pair which I used regularly as I have a serious neurological disease which requires the use of wheelchair . I lost one when I was in Rome in March and I was so upset that it ruined my stay. Yes even in Italy. The gloves are light and elegant and protect my hands. They also bring a little elegance in a very trying situation . Your commentary is excellent . Thank you Norma. ncccms@gmail.com

Beautiful photos, I like her makeup appearing lighter but do agree her brows are a bit heavy for my preference.
