Tour Polls: Vote for Kate's Best Daywear, Casual & Earrings + Calendar Updates

We're back rounding up our tour polls, covering daywear looks, casual ensembles and earrings, as well as a look at calendar updates for the Duchess.

Best Daywear Look

From a sartorial perspective the royal tour offered a varied selection of daywear looks for the Duchess. From classic designs from favoured designers to repeats and an abundance of printed boho style dresses, the climate in India meant we saw Kate choosing mostly dresses throughout the tour rather than her usual choice of coats and coatdresses. The tour kicked off when the Cambridges arrived in Mumbai, with Kate opting for a vibrant red print Alexander McQueen piece from the Pre-Fall 2016 Collection. Following a brief break, Kate changed into the colourful 'Gulrukh' Tunic Dress by Mumbai-based designer Anita Dongre for engagements in the city. An aide said: "She wanted to wear a local designer at the earliest possible opportunity."

There's a very interesting story behind the Anita Dongre dress which went largely unnoticed in the flurry of events and outfits throughout the tour. In March, PA Natasha Archer got in touch with the designer requesting a lookbook, then she went in and requested items for fittings. Among the selections - the Gulrukh - which had been significantly altered by Natasha herself. More from the Telegraph:

'All the more surprising was the fact that the Duchess’s team had altered Dongre’s design. The “Gulrukh” dress - from the SS16 Love Notes collection - was originally full length and included a traditional stole in matching fabric. “In India a lot of woman would wear this with trousers and a stole,” she says, pointing to the catwalk look from Lakme Fashion Week where the dress was shown in its original form. “Her stylist has taken the stole and converted part of that into the belt and then chopped it off so it can be worn as a dress. She’s amazing - it looks easy, breezy and so contemporary,” Dongre says of the DIY update by Natasha Archer.'

Kate chose the Emilia Wickstead Wool-Crepe Midi Dress for a Tech Awards launch and engagements in Delhi. The £1,700 ivory dress features two faux breast pockets, two front slit pockets, a full skirt and a concealed button and fastening back.

When the Duke and Duchess met vulnerable children in Delhi, Kate wore the £50 Red Navy Border Print Lace up Maxi Dress by British brand Glamorous. The long sleeve dress features a scoop neck, a wide flared skirt, and an allover pattern with paisley and floral details. For those interested in pre-ordering the dress, you can get a 25% discount with the code DRESS25. For lunch with Prime Minister Modi, Kate opted for the elegant Temperley London 'Desdemona' dress. The jade dress from the Autumn 2016 Collection is crafted from vintage-inspired lace reminiscent of traditional Spanish folk costume.

For a memorable day in Kaziranga National Park the Duchess chose a pretty Pink Print Dress by Topshop. We rarely see Kate in pink, which is a pity, because the colour works superbly well with her colouring. The boho-chic dress features black embroidery and tassel-tipped ties. We saw two royal repeats as the royal tour moved to Bhutan. Kate wore her Tory Burch 'Chrissy' Dress at Guwahati airport for an early morning flight to the country.

For the arrival in Bhutan, Kate repeated an Emilia Wickstead coatdress she wore first for the 2012 Order of the Thistle service. This time, the Duchess wore the soft yellow-gold version of the garment with a belt, which many readers felt was a welcome addition and added a freshness to the look.

We had discussed the possibility of Kate paying homage to traditional dress during the tour, and she did just that when she met the King and Queen of Bhutan. In many ways, this look was a particularly special one from the tour, and perhaps the one I'll remember most. Kate combined a beautiful embroidered cape by Parisian brand Paul and Joe with a lavender skirt, which was made by her unidentified designer in London using fabric woven by Kelzang Wangmo, a lady from Thimphu. The look paid tribute to Bhutan's national dress for women, the kira. I loved how different elements and designers were used to put the ensemble together.

On the last day of the tour, the Cambridges departed Bhutan and said farewell at Paro Airport. HRH repeated her bespoke broderie anglaise full-skirted suit by Alexander McQueen, first worn in Singapore in 2012. This time, Kate wore the suit without a belt.

The Duke and Duchess concluded their tour with a poignant visit to the Taj Mahal. I had a feeling the Duchess would pull something special out of the bag for this engagement and she certainly didn't disappoint in a beautiful white and blue sheath dress featuring intricate embroidery by Indian-American designer Naeem Khan. A stunning look - and one I imagine will garner quite a few votes.

Best Casual Look

For a safari in Kaziranga National Park, the Duchess wore the print ruffled 'Gretna' blouse by Australian brand RM Williams with ZARA Mid-Rise Biker trousers. What does one wear for a hike to Tiger's Nest? The Duchess chose a waistcoat by Really Wild Clothing teamed with the crisp Jaeger Linen Classic Blouse and skinny jeans.

Best Earrings

The Duchess opted for a minimalistic approach to jewellery throughout the tour, foregoing bracelets, watches and necklaces (with the exception of the pendant given to her by Queen Jetsun). Kate brought a stunning and varied selection of earrings to add a touch of sparkle to her looks. First up, we have Kate's Cassandra Goad 'Temple of Heaven' earrings, worn several times throughout the tour.

Cassandra Goad

One of Kate's favoured pairs during the tour - the £8 Accessorize Filigree Bead Short Drop Earrings.

A one-off pair of blue lapis and diamond earrings by Indian jeweller Amrapali added the finishing touch to Kate's sparkling look for the Bollywood Gala.

Kate wore a pair of chandelier earrings she's had for years for the Queen's birthday party.

The Duchess debuted a beautiful new pair of Kiki McDonough earrings: "Special Edition Green Tourmaline, Green Amethyst and Diamond Earrings." They were specially made to celebrate the birth of Princess Charlotte last May.

At Kaziranga, Kate brought back another pair of chandelier earrings she's had for at least a decade. The earrings appear to be gold with green stones.

Another new pair for the Duchess - the £39 Gold Charm Earrings by Scottish brand Brora.

The Duchess wore her Kiki McDonough 'Lauren' earrings leaving Bhutan.

During William and Kate's hike to Tiger's Nest, Kate purchased a pair of £6 blue earrings. Much to everyone's surprise she teamed them with her Naeem Khan dress at the Taj Mahal. I thought it a lovely gesture giving a nod to Bhutan on the final engagement of the tour and the earrings worked perfectly with the dress.

Finally, as you may have heard, two engagements have been added to Kate's calendar for next Wednesday, 4 May. The Duchess will visit Hampton Court's recently unveiled Magic Garden, marking the official opening of the Palace's new children's play area. The Duchess will be taken on a tour around the new play area, and shown some of its unique design features. Along the way, Kate will meet those involved in the Magic Garden's design and construction, as well as children and families enjoying the new facilities before unveiling a plaque.

More from the press release:

'The Magic Garden has been six years in the making, and begins an exciting new chapter in the Palace’s 500 year history. The Historic Royal Palaces’ gardens team have grown and tended to hundreds of trees and plants to create the garden’s magical landscape, planting over 17,000 bulbs and 3,000 shrubs in the garden.'

It has been suggested this would be an ideal engagement for Kate to take George and Charlotte to - highly unlikely, but wouldn't it be fun. :)

Afterwards, the Duchess will undertake her first engagement as Patron of the Anna Freud Centre by attending a lunch reception supporting the development of a new centre of excellence for children's mental health. During this engagement the Duchess will meet families who have benefited from the centre, as well as key supporters, and watch a short film about the ambitions of the organisation.

William and Kate have a week of celebrations coming up: the couple celebrate their fifth wedding anniversary on Friday, and Charlotte's first birthday on Monday. I expect we'll likely see a photo or two to mark the special occasion. :)

Excellent post!Loved the fact that you split the dresses according to occassion and not all looks on one! It made the voting easier and more fair!

It will be amazing if she tooks the kids, maybe and this is a maybe maybe she could bring George, but it's unlikely
    So many things going on!

Thank you so much for all your efforts! :)
You make so many people happy! Blessings!

  2. Thank you Charlotte. Isn't delightful to have an overview. I had to vote for Naeem Khan - so perfect for a difficult appearance. Off topic and delete if not appropriate the royal-collection-trust on instagram is sharing for the next 90 days 90 different outfits HM has worn. Intereting from both a fashion and historical perspective.

  4. This day dress poll isn't even going to be close. The blue/white Naeem Khan was one of the most beautiful dresses Kate has EVER worn. It fit her to perfection and was spot on for the occasion.

    1. I liked the Khan dress, except for all the "hidden" meanings in the blue designs. I like a dress to be.....
just a dress. It did fit her like no other dress so far though.

    2. Agreed!(And it isn`t close at all.:)

    3. Agreed! There were several I really enjoyed, but when you scroll to the last one, the Naeem Khan, there is no question.

As an aside, I was thumbing through the most recent Talbots catalogue, and there was a dress that I found to be in a similar spirit to the Naeem Khan (for those of us petite girls on a budget!).

  7. I voted for the look with the lavender skirt in Bhutan, the casual ooh in Bhutan but honestly I liked them both. I voted for the Charlotte and the lavender earrings.

The lavender skirt outfit in Bhutan looks better and better each time I see it. It's so different from everything else she has ever worn and I suspect that we won't see anything like it again. It has to be celebrated for that reason 😉

    Looking forward to the 4th.

  8. My votes: Naeem Khan dress, Really Wild Waist Coat/Jaeger Blouse/Skinny Jeans, and the lavender amethyst earrings.

And I may be the first, or only, person to make this observation, but I think the Magic Garden is a bit of an eyesore given the significance of the location.

    2. You may be right Royalfan. Oh, well, I guess we`ll see. I don`t know how you all narrowed those votes down. I voted for probably close to ten dresses and at least seven earrings!!!!! (And Kate`s safari look. Jeans were tight, but loved the shirt and it looked so much more "Kate" than the other one did, at least in my opinion. :)

      Delete
    3. I voted the same way royalfan, although the Paul and Joe cape with the lavender skirt almost won out over the Khan dress for all the reasons Julie stated. The light purple color of the Kiki amethyst drops is incredibly beautiful.

    4. So I'm in good company, Stephanie. :)

12:19, I liked many of the outfits she wore on this tour...I never said it was easy. :))

Erika, I am not a fan of capes, but the skirt was lovely. It would be a good candidate for an alteration...perhaps a shorter skirt? I'd like to see it again...with the earrings of course!

      Delete
    5. I thought maybe she would keep the skirt as is for posterity in case of an exhibition of her tour clothes or something or other years from now. However, the material
would be striking made into a more
      modern skirt especially with those
      amazing earrings.

I love capes but being 5'3", they don't love me, unfortunately.

  13. The Naeem Khan dress knocked it out of the park! Definitely a winner! I also really liked the Dongre and Glamourous dresses which I think were more like casual wear. I didn't like either of her official casual wear outfits. Now I appreciate the "uniform" even more. The jewelry was disappointing considering what is at her disposal. I personally loved the Kiki McDonough lavender amethyst earrings she wore in Bhutan. Very pretty!

  16. I don't disagree that the Naeem Khan dress was stunning, and yet I thought the style was too similar to many dresses she wears. So I voted for one of the Boho dresses - I thought they were all a fun departure from her norm.

  17. How lovely to reprise the tour wardrobe in these polls. Because they are so different in length and style, the day dresses present a tough choice. However, I believe the Naeem Khan dress will go down in history alongside other forever memorable dresses like Diana's LBD. http://i.huffpost.com/gen/1220786/thumbs/o-PRINCESS-DIANA-570.jpg?16

But it will also go down in history as a symbol of what the Taj Mahal is all about: Love.

  24. Royalfan, I understand what you mean about the Magic Garden. As I wrote before I am very familiar with Hampton Court, used to push my daughter's pram along the pathways 35 years ago. But I also understand about having a place where young children can actually play. I can't see from the photos how close it is to the actual "Court" but the grounds are extensive and it may not be that visible from the more formal part of it. I will be over in England in August. Not planning on being at Hampton specifically as I am trying for National Trust properties I haven't already seen but will follow its progress along via website. I do love Hampton!!!

    1. If they release birthday photos for Charlotte I will be very surprised since she was on the Queen's lap in the other photo release. IF, we do get photos of Charlotte I hope she will have an outfit on different from the other two beautiful, but similar ones, she's worn before. As for them releasing an anniversary photo. I doubt that even more.

That playground doesn't look like an attractive draw for children. Don't know why such a peculiar design.

Excited about more of the Queen's birthday festivities. Love the bright colors the Queen wears.
Hoping for a different shape in hats though. That slanted design needs a rest.

The clothes choices this time we're not my favorites. Except for the Kiki's, the jewelry all looked the same. One boho look similar to another in the jewelry and dress. And the fit on the beautiful green lace. tsk. tsk. The flaps on the white dress. Hopefully HER choices for the birthday festivities will put her back in the saddle again. It is the Queen's 90th birthday after all. Definitely worth the effort to choose your own clothes for such memorable events.

    2. Valerie, Hapmton Court *is* beautiful and I wanted a better idea of where it is located. If you click on the aerial option, you will see the Magic Garden as a work in progress. It is tucked away, but I still believe they could have come up with a design that would be popular with children, yet easier on the eyes. :)

I'd be most interested in Prince Charles' opinion on this design as this issue is one of his pet peeves. Hmmmmm... Did I just catch myself agreeing with him??? I may need a moment here! ;)

  27. Actually, that playground has distinct similarities with sixteenth century garden design, gaudy pavilions, earth mound and so on. And for those who dislike modern copies, at least it is at the edge of the estate

    ReplyDelete

    1. All I know is my nephews would have loved that earth mound when they were small. Mr. bluhare and I used to take them for weekends and their favorite thing to do was to go to a local shopping mall where they had "the donut", which was a carpeted donut, for lack of a better term, which they ran and rolled on. Reminds me very much of the earth mound, except the earth mound is much nicer!

    2. I like the round multi-layered grass circle! What an interesting landscape design. I expect the whole garden will look much better when the plants can grow and bloom. The pavilions or towers are a bit gaudy, but children will no doubt love them.

    1. I watched their exit of Westminster Abbey when they sounded the trumpets as they emerged from the vestibule. Loved her triumphant and regal walk, on the arm of her prince, gliding happily past all the rumors and lack of public support she endured in the past. Definite hallmark moment in retribution and justice. Love never fails.

    2. What a beautiful way to describe it, 16:08. And, IMO, it applied to Kate's parents and siblings as well.

      Delete
    3. Thanks, RF. And I concur regarding her parents and siblings.

      Delete
    4. 1608: What lack of public support? When they got engaged and married the whole world was behind them. And, personally, I think weddings should be about your relationship and building a future together. I thought their wedding was lovely; stayed up all night to watch it. If I thought it was about retribution and justice I probably would have passed.

      Delete
    5. Very beautiful description, 16:08. Augmented by the fact, as mentioned by Royal Fan, that she so naturally and graciously included her family in no uncertain terms. I noticed her male cousin there front and center at the wedding. He is the tall, dark and handsome one, in the background also. He is a godfather to either George or Charlotte.
And could James have done his presentation any better? It was superbly delivered. I hope William and Kate watch their wedding each anniversary.
It would be time nicely invested in doing that in my opinion. Wait until Princess Charlotte sees it.
wow. better than any Disney princess movie.
George may not be as enthusiastic about it though except for the soldiers and horses part.

      Delete
    6. Bluhare, no offense, but I think you missed 16:08's whole point. What you said doesn't register to me in that text at all. Not even close.
I think it was a beautiful sentiment stated quite eloquently. I happen to agree with every word of it because I had those same feelings as I watched Kate and William walk down that aisle.

      Delete
    7. 2014: Perhaps I did miss something; wouldn't be the first time. Could you explain please? Thanks!

      Delete
    8. Oh course the whole world was excited for them at the time of their wedding. In the years prior though that was not always true. They persevered and their love won out. Their walk out of the church into their future signified that. That's what I think that 16:08 was saying.

      Delete
    9. 2355: I don't think a lot of people paid any attention at all before their engagement and wedding. I know I didn't. What I saw was a lovely wedding with a bride who was one of us. And I was really really happy that "one of us" had married a prince, had lived the fairy tale, and was going to make us all proud. I thought the Middletons handled themselves beautifully and looked great. I told my mother how great I thought they were. Never once did I think justice and retribution, and I do not think I'm alone in that.

      Delete
    10. Neither is 16:08 in their perspective.

      Delete
    11. I prefer a perspective that doesn't involve retribution, which is defined as punishment for misdeeds. But if that is how you feel about it, then OK!

      Delete
  32. I thought too many of these outfits wore Kate, rather than the other way around. That was especially true of the Naeem Khan. The dress fits beautifully, and it was appropriate for the overwhelming heat, but the embroidery is a bit overwhelming. I voted for the Temperley lace, although I agree that it needed a more structured built-in bra. And I am not sure just what color it is, since the shade of aqua varies so much in the different photographs.

Of course I loved and voted for the Bhutan hiking outfit, one of the best Kate has ever worn. I also voted for the Temple of Heaven earrings. They seemed so appropriate for this trip, and the design is both beautiful and unusual. I felt a little disloyal to my favorite citrines! The Kiki McDonoughs are beautiful, especially the green ones, but I did not see anything unusual about the designs.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 04:08, I agree with you about the outfits and the beautiful fit but too bold design of the Khan dress. I hope Kate starts being her own stylist again. That way the clothes won't "wear her". The only reason do that is because they are chosen by someone for their own style and not Kate's. I also agree that she needed the bodice of the beautiful mint lace dress to actually fit her.
Love your comment about your loyalty to the Kiki McDonoughs.

      Delete
    2. When I wrote that, I had forgotten that the beautiful citrines are also Kiki's work. Kate actually wore four pairs of her earrings on the trip. The new ones are beautiful, but they are standard designs.

    2. You deserve them. You worked yourself ragged during that tour being up in the middle of your night to post the events. Then put these polls together. Plus working. Plus going to school. Plus being Mr. Charlotte's Mrs.! I'm tired just writing it all.

    3. Many, many thanks. You are all too kind!

Absolute rubbish. They have nothing better to write about. There are no scandals, no unhappy marriage, no affairs. So they just make this stuff up as they go.

    2. I am really surprised that their PR staff doesn't make more money. London's one of the most expensive places in the world to live!

    3. Bluhare, I agree. The only part that sounds totally rubbish for me is the money the PR team earn.

  40. The press makes the continuous mistake of comparing Kate to Diana. Kate would be in trouble with the royal establishment if she acted like Diana, though sometimes she does sit on grubby floors with poor children. Her task is to follow her own style and still meet the requirements of her role. She is doing that largely by being visible like the Queen, rather than audible. It's a way to stay out of trouble.

As a horse-mad but not highly educated princess, the Queen once asked whether a renowned Italian poet, Dante I think, was a jockey; after that, she quickly learned to keep her mouth shut! Kate's "Gosh, that's interesting" is along the same lines, though certainly more aware. But it would have been nice if she had substituted 'awful' or 'terrible' for 'interesting.' Kate will eventually need to develop the courage to follow her best instincts without ruffling the Palace feathers. Someday she will set the standards of royal behavior, but not yet.

Congratulations to Charlotte with the Downton surname for the excellent quotes in USA Today! We know you are wonderfully talented, and the world is finding that out, too!

    1. The press WANTS another Diana, but I agree that Kate has been wise to avoid the trap.

    2. Hard to judge he statement when you dont know the context. Media are famous for taking thing totally out of context.

Agree, that quote had the sound of being out of context to me. Ali

    4. 1601 and Ali: The context is that a man was asked what he and Kate talked about when they visited. He said that he was telling her about children who are mutilated so they make more money begging. She said "Gosh, how interesting".

  41. Charlotte. I read today that there might be another tour for Will and Kate in the fall to Canada. This they say will include the kids. Do you have any information on this.

And congrats on the article in USA Today. Great job.

    1. Hello,

I haven't heard anything about a tour to Canada with the children. I understand there will be an overseas trip in the Autumn, perhaps something similar to their USA visit.

    2. Pauline I haven't heard this rumor, but as a Canadian we now have a young "hip" Prime Minister with a beautiful wife and 3 young children. Obama just hosted the first State Dinner for them that has been held for Canada in almost 2 decades. So the Cambridges and the Trudeaus would appear to have a lot in common, if another Canadian tour took place.

    1. I know, I know. Because of that, they can't have any valid opinion. Nowadays, none of the press can have.

      Maybe others think otherwise.:-)

    2. Haha, Anett. Unsurprisingly, I think otherwise!!

  44. If Kate saw a picture of the way she looked on the safari, it would not be surprising that she wanted to be more presentable on the hike. There were some pictures from the strenuous part of the climb where, with her vest off and hair in slight disarray, she looked as though she had been working at it. When she reached a resting place, she may have wanted to give the photographers some good shots, since they could not follow to the vicinity of the temple. But of course any such consideration did not go unpunished.
