Today's party marked a milestone for Prince William - the first one at Buckingham Palace he has attended.
Also present were Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, the Gloucesters, and the Duke of Kent. The royals stepped out at 4 pm to the national anthem playing before dispersing into the crowd, each taking a separate route, known as 'lanes', to ensure as many guests as possible have the opportunity to chat with a member of the Royal family. The parties are a staple on the royal calendar with Her Majesty hosting at least three annually at Buckingham Palace, and one at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh. The garden parties were instituted by Queen Victoria in the 1860s when they were known as 'breakfasts', despite taking place in the afternoon.

At each Garden Party, around 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches and 20,000 slices of cake are consumed! Garden Parties are an important way for the Queen to speak to a broad range of people from all walks of life, all of whom have made a positive impact in their community.'

The Palace has been sharing a behind-the-scenes look at garden parties. In and around the rose garden regular work includes dead-heading, weeding and clipping to ensure everything is as beautiful as possible. And in the final days and hours before guests arrive, final touches to the lawns and grounds are made. Guests can also explore the history of the Queen's life in the Palace Gardens, which includes this magnolia gifted to Her Majesty on her 55th Birthday.
It's always interesting to see what the royals wear at the garden parties. As for the dress code, the Palace notes the following: "For a Garden Party, gentlemen wear morning dress or lounge suits, while women wear day dress, usually with hats or fascinators. National dress and uniform are also often worn."
Today marks Kate's fourth appearance at one of HM's garden parties. In 2012 and 2013 she selected designs by Emilia Wickstead. In 2014 she wore her very popular nude lace Alexander McQueen sheath dress. The yellow Wickstead coat was a new piece, while the other two looks were 'repeats'. It came as no surprise to see the Duchess 'repeating' today. I expect it's done in an effort to minimize the attention drawn by her sartorial choices, ensuring the focus of the day remains on the event itself. It's something we often see Kate doing when she's attending an event with Her Majesty, such as last night's garden party.

It was a treat to see Kate wearing the ivory Alexander McQueen dress she wore to Prince George's christening. It's a fantastic look on her; it proved a stellar choice for the christening and worked very well again in today's setting. The bespoke piece was described as: "From Spring Summer 2012 Collection, the leaf crepe garment with wave ruffle panel, rounded padded shoulders and silk lining."
Kate once again teamed it with the Georgie hat by Jane Taylor. The sophisticated sinamay beret with delicate silk/organza rose and classic veiling trim retailed for £755.

'I was walking to Notting Hill from Kensington to go to the gym when I saw a helicopter taking off at the back of Kensington Palace. I noticed George and his mother watching Princess Anne take off. The Princess was wearing a Navy uniform. After the helicopter took off, the prince had a go on a policeman's motorbike for quite a while. Kate was really smiley. There were about three or four hundred people watching. It was so lovely.'

The Duchess was also seen enjoying a stroll at Kensington Gardens with the children yesterday by Ashley Guitrau. As Kate pushed Charlotte with one hand, she held onto George with the other. Kate wore a long blue skirt with a matching blouse and a sweater around her shoulders. It looks like a lovely summery look for an outing with the children.

In the letter of support for the International Children's Palliative Care Network's conference, Kate wrote:
'When families are confronted with the shattering news that their child has a life-limiting condition, their world can fall apart. For those facing this awful reality, access to hospice and palliative care services can transform their quality of life and help families to make the most of the time they have together.
I have had the privilege to see this transformational work for myself, both in the UK and through visiting inspirational hospices in Malaysia, Australia and New Zealand. With each of these visits, what has consistently been clear to me is that while circumstances and environments can differ around the world - those involved in providing palliative support to families are united in their aim to provide the best and most loving care possible.
I have also been struck by their willingness to work together, and have seen the impact this can have. When healthcare workers share resources and expertise across borders, it can transform care services for organisations, and the families in their care.
I would like to thank the International Children's Palliative Care Network membership for being the global advocate for children receiving palliative care, and working to ensure that children and families across the world have a chance of accessing the vital lifeline. I wish all the delegates a successful conference and a special time together - to learn, share and plan together for the benefit of children everywhere.'
I was very impressed with this letter. I thought it informative and encouraging, drawing attention to the important work being done in palliative care, with Kate noting her own experiences and observations at hospices she has visited. A very nice message of support for those attending the conference.

Also today, news the Duchess held a meeting with representatives working in support of services for women in prisons yesterday (with thanks to Cepe). I imagine the meeting is a follow-up to Kate's visit to HMP Send last September.

Yay! Surprised to see her repeat the christening outfit. Happily surprised since it's very pretty!! And it fits great for the occation. I (who love coloured accessories) would have had another hat in some colour with matching shoes and clutch, but she looks perfectly nice the way she is :) And very nice to see more of the design of the dress without obstructions (although a very cute obstruction I might add!!). And it looks very nice with her updo!

On the meeting yesterday, so great to see her yet again focus on that area. I hope that women in prisons is an area she will continue to be involved in, especially since it has close connections both with mental health and also addiction issues. Maybe she's even looking at taking up a patronage in the area. I assume Place2b, Action on Addiction (and some of William and Harrys organizations, maybe Centerpoint) could team up nicely with a charity working with women in prison and take a "whole family" approach. Either way, it's great seeing that she's involved with this again!
That is what I thought as well Rebecca. A possible new patronage research done during the meeting.

That would have been a great photo of all three together. Maybe one day Harry will fine the one, i'm so ready for another royal wedding, but I wonder if Harry's wedding will be as grand as William and Kate's. I would think it would, since he is Diana's son people would love to see him get married. Although i believe that Harry and his bride might choose St. Georges Chapel in Windsor.

DeleteI just keep thinking Harry needs a woman who's athletic and has ties to the military to share his devotion to the soldiers (his work on Invictus was outstanding this year)--not some socialite fluffy person. Someone down to earth, real, who can have an inkling of what he experience during his tours of Afghanistan. I'm pulling for him! And I think he'd have a low key wedding with tons of friends---like at St. George's Chapel as Brandy suggested b/c it's smaller than some other churches and it's where his father got remarried, as well as his uncle Edward and other family members. It makes for a fun walk down the street into the chapel.

DeleteTHIS is a great outfit! Totally appropriate for a semi-formal occasion, she looks great alongside William and his top hat. Love her hair too. And that cute photo of her with George. Apparently there is another Twitter photo floating around--haven't seen it--with her strolling with George and Charlotte in KP. Apparently she was wearing a blue blouse and skirt outfit. I am glad too that they are posting when Kate has meetings with her charities. Soothes--perhaps--the feathers of those who feel she isn't doing enough with her patronages.

I always enjoy it when she "recycles" an outfit especially the way she switches up the accessories or shoes or hairstyle. I would really love to see Kate recycle some of the outfits which she previously wore to Trooping the Colour. She once wore a lovely grey dress in 2012 and there was also that 2-piece outfit she wore in 2014. I would love to see those outfits in full, fingers crossed!

I'm really surprised Kate chose to wear again this piece she wore at Prince George's christening but I have to say that I love it. I loved how she styled her hair for the christening and personally I liked her hairstyle (with this outfit) more back in 2013 than now but she looks amazing with the updo too.

I wondered whether the heels of the Fern pumps were damaged yesterday when Kate was standing in gravel to peer into the sarcophagus garden. I ruined a pair of heels once when I had to stand in gravel for a ceremony.
DeleteThis happens to be one of my favorite dresses ever and she is rocking it beautifully. The shoes are to die for. On another note I am very happy to see her find her footing and do all this work. I am very sure as I have said before that a lot happens behind the scenes that we don't know about. The pics with George are also cute. Good job overall

ReplyDeleteI was never a fan of this outfit. It worked well at the baptism with PG's gown but, overall, I find it fussy and matronly. The neckline is too high and I think the bodice would look better with a straight rather than full skirt. Actually, I like the runway version much better than this altered one which comes off as too tame and sweet to me. However, it does fit her perfectly and looks nice from the back.

Anette: I thought Eugenie's dress MIGHT have looked good on someone with slimmer hips. Not trying to "fat shame" because Eugenie isn't fat but IMO that kind of dress would be really difficult to wear. Looks good on the hanger but made for people with up-and-down figures with no hips.
DeleteI agree about the brooch. Women just don't wear brooches the way my mother and her generation did. I have a couple of my mother's and grandmothers' brooches but can never find anything to wear them on. Most of today's fabrics seem too flimsy and I don't wear heavy jackets in Arizona. I am excited though--my grandma had an (inexpensive) necklace that she wore constantly. I inherited it after my mother died but it broke several years ago. I had an idea this week to take it to a jeweler in town and see if he could make it into two necklaces, one for me and one from my only maternal necklace. And he said no problem!! Can't wait to see my cousin next month in Montreal and surprise her with it whilst wearing its twin.
Anett - I agree with everything YOU have written! I loved this dress for the christening. Actually I loved everything about her look at the christening (Charlotte's too, two of Kate's best looks IMO). Here, sadly, not so much and exactly for the reasons you mention. Even though it's cream it feels very heavy, the suede shoes do not strike me as a sunny spring day shoe. However, I'm a sucker for hairstyling that is anything but down and I adore the hat.

DeleteCoincidentally, I just got back from shoe shopping and there were a lot a suede shoes in the store. I had a similar reaction of "shouldn't we only be wearing suede in the autumn and winter"? But, the sales lady told me it's in high fashion right now. "No more rules" were her words. I'm all over that and I now own a pair for summer!

DeleteErika, I'm with you. This ensemble is "okay" with me and was appropriate for the christening but it's not one of my favorites. I get why it had to be buttoned up and neck-high, long skirt, for the church but it looks VERY matronly and old on Kate. Because she has no shape or curves to speak of, the peplum just looks a little flat and sad, more like a misplaced ruffle than a peplum.

I don't like A-line skirts, they just look too - much and too frumpy, even on stick-thin ladies like Kate. Pencil skirts are so much more flattering. I wish she'd recycle that navy lace Erdem dress.

ReplyDeleteI think alot of followers have landed on a nice level now with photos. My personal guidlines is Kate or William has to be present for it to be OK. They have to be published on social media (instagram, facebook, twitter etc) and not bought by a magazine and be taken by a bystander and not someone following. The last one is hard to know, but following the first one makes it being paparazzi highly unlikely because a paparazzi wouldn't publish for free on social media. That is a way where I feel comfortable.

DeleteGreat way to objectively evaluate pictures. It was nice the posted commented that Kate was waving while she was in the garden acknowledging the people around her. I also imagine that it helps to keep the kids calm and less fearful when in a public place with lots of people.

I thought the issue most of you had was these were "unauthorised" photos, and you wanted to go with W&K's wishes that they didn't want anything other than official photos, sanctioned by them, released? Photos taken by onlookers before were off limits... For instance, no one wanted the photos of Kate and George taken by a teacher outside the museum shown, or other photos of them taken by onlookers, whether shopping or also watching the helicopter.
I'm honestly just curious, not judging anyone for their opinion! Just wondering if you've all mellowed a little :) or you've come to see it differently? But I do welcome the change of heart!
I agree with the photos from the fellow person in the garden who Kate waved to. That was wonderful. But the other one sold to websites by a professional photographer is very very dubious. I think everyone needs to be cautious about things that seem innocent on the outside.
DeleteI have basically had the same view for ages. But before the letter I was more naive and assumed that alot of paparazzi pictures were just citizen pictures. So when the letter came I had to re-evaluate, which lead to me for a while not watching any of them but has leveled out now that I can put into words my "guidelines". The ones of George on the bike still feels mildly iffy too me because of the political and journalistic connection of the photographer... But I have noticed that when they land and fly off with the helicopter there is usually alot of onlookers and photographers since it's rather cool with a helicopter and it's close to the palace so clearly people will go look. So my guideline has always been more or less "Stumbling upon them and taking pictures is fine, looking for it is not" but I now have a more practical look on it. Do you understand, Claudia? :)

I agree with Rebecca. My main measuring stick here is intent. I know that I cannot accurately guess the intent of strangers. But couple intent with the method used to take the pictures and you can have a pretty accurate idea of how the photos were obtained.
DeleteThere seem to be gatherings every time a helicopter lands or takes off. I would almost bet there are people snapping pictures of the helicopter and have no idea who else ends up in the shot. I realize these pictures aren't that scenario but for me it is the same premise or feeling. William and Catherine are very aware how many paparazzi are just waiting to snap pictures of them or of their children. That coupled with the fact there are crowds of excited onlookers when the helicopter is there makes me believe they know it is a possibility.
It is usually pretty easy to know the difference in paparazzi versus excited fan or citizen. Long distance shots taken with long zoom lenses are intrusive. The photos taken in France = intrusive in a huge way. Paps in the bushes = intrusive. Someone taking a quick cell phone shot from a respectable difference = not nearly as intrusive and nowhere near as creepy as chilling in the shrubs.
Lastly, it doesn't seem that the Cambridges are concerned with citizens taking a few photos when they are out in a public place taking a walk or watching a helicopter take off or land. We have seen quite a few photos obtained in those areas by people also at their leisure in the park and I don't believe there has been any disquiet about those photos.
It swings me back to intent and the method in which they were obtained.

DeleteYes it is dubious in the eyes of many when a professional photographer says he's walking by but carries a long lens and then turns around to sell it to newspapers the next minute. The intent is dubious. It is not a matter of law but a matter of taste.
I agree with Courtney. Those pictures with Carole Middleton on the beach were intrusive and wrong on all sorts of levels even though they probably were not illegal.

DeleteI wish I could know the setting each time. If there were lots of people around and they knew they could be being photographed then I don't mind enjoying the photos when, like most of you have said, they are from the public and weren't sold (and only happen occasionaly).
But, if I could magically look around the scene and see there are very few people around and the next day there are several shots from several angles splashed all over the papers then I feel gross looking at them - peeping and voyeuristic and I don't care to feel that way personally.
Excellent point about Kate waving to the crowd! Her attitude sets up the attitude of the children. Kids pick up on the feelings of adults around them and if Kate were angry or fearful the kids would feel it and begin to associate crowds with bad things.
Overall I mostly agree with the guideline's Charlotte and Rebecca-Sweden mention.
Also, I do wonder if Kate has decided to never look angry or intruded upon (no matter what she feels). I imagine William (and Harry) seeing pap-type shots of the children with a scared/overwhelmed looking Kate would bring up some bad memories for sure for them!
But, on this day, she surely knew and accepted that she was very much in public.
I agree Florida Girl. Quite a few years ago when my husband was director of one of Princess Anne's visits to New Zealand, she went to waterski on a popular lake on her day off. An overseas tourist was taking a photograph from a long distance away and Anne's personal protection officer (British) tried to stop them. My husband was nearby and had to say to the Police officer, that it was a public place and there was no way to stop people photographing there. If the photographer was a professional and had been accredited to the visit, he could have requested them to allow her some privacy as there had been an agreement to allow some free time without intrusive photographs. On the other hand there are now quite strict laws here about taking unauthorised photos of children, especially at the beach, swimming pool etc. I think European courts are much tougher now about this sort of thing. I read recently that Princess Madelaine of Sweden was very annoyed at paparazzi taking secret snaps of her family on an overseas beach. Deliberately tracking someone to catch them unawares seems like harassment to me, especially if they are on private property and the photographer is using a telephoto lens. In the notorious case at the Linley's house in France, the Royal couple were on a secluded private property and the photographer knew that the Duke and Duchess would be very embarrassed, but still went ahead and sold the photo to a magazine. If you are in full public view in Kensington Gardens it is quite different. You can't stop people taking snaps there but there is still a thin line especially when children are involved. If I felt my children were getting upset I would definitely do something about it. I recall Diana trying to block the camera once when her children were on a ski slope in Switzerland. Having a family photo call on these occasions does seem to work and that seems to be how European Royals cope with it.

But it is naive to think the motorcycle pics were purely accidental. Press who print such photos of children are solely operating on clicks and profit. No thanks.

DeleteAs much as I *liked* the outfits B&E wore yesterday, I dislike today's choices. Fussy and unflattering. The photo of them walking behind Kate is a testament to less being more.
DeleteI think one of the biggest problem B & E encounter is dressing for the wrong body type or shape. They aren't ugly women and they are young, sassy and have nice figures. They just have to dress for the body type and shape they have. Not the one they wish they have. A woman who is over weight but dresses stylishly and clothing that fits properly and a style flattering to her body shape is, in my opinion, more beautiful and stylish than a super model in horribly fitting clothing.
DeleteCatherine has worn certain silhouettes that don't accentuate her figure in the way she needed them to. She is thin and if you aren't careful certain cuts can make you look androgynous or straight up and down with no curves.
A good stylist doesn't try to get their client to dress in clothing that is unflattering to their figure, even if it is the current fashion. A good stylist chooses pieces that accentuate the positive and downplay the negative.
I wasn't impressed with the York girl's outfits from yesterday or today. I just think the fit of most of the garments were just not flattering. The white dress with the floral panels has to be the best of the four looks. I don't love everything Catherine wears but in the shot that shows the Yorks and Catherine there is a huge difference in elegance level. Catherine looks every inch a princess in well fitting, event appropriate clothes. Her hair and makeup were done neatly and she is standing up straight and confident. The confidence in Catherine is growing. You can tell just by her posture. B & E look a mess in my opinion. To me they were the exact opposite of what Catherine portrayed.
We have seen B & E looks glamorous and elegant so it isn't that they lack those characteristics. It is more that they are just dressing for the wrong body type.
These two girls, in MO, were perfectly inelegant and graceless..

Yes they do. Heaven help the York princesses. They choose fun styles that do not flatter their figures, and the accessories often seem as though they were selected in the dark at random. I don't expect them to be dull but a proper tailor and stylist could do wonders. Kate and the Queen look Royal.

DeleteElizabeth - I replied to this topic and I was not rude or even mean. I don't think Catherine is perfect by any means and sometimes I don't understand what she is thinking when she wears things but 99% of the time the garments she wears fit her well and strike the right tone. I do think it takes times to develop a sense of style and to accept that some things just won't work for you. I think Catherine has started figuring this out and I really believe that B&E are beautiful girls. They have cute figures and lovely complexions. My point, and a majority of the other women who commented, is that they need a crash course in silouhettes, fabrics and under garments. I don't want them to fail or be ostracized. I was bullied in school because of my weight and know how hard it is to be compared by many and found wanting. If they had the right hand guiding them they could look spectacular in ways Catherine never will. She is tall and willowy but B&E have curves. I suppose the grass is always greener.

I agree with you. You could see the security in each picture, but they were a discrete distance. It is not really there job to do child care. I am sure if George bolted, they would run after him, but I think Kate can handle them as any mother of two.

ReplyDeleteI got tickled looking at the way Eugenie and Beatrice seem to be cutting Kate angry looks (I'm sure they're not in actuality). Brings back memories of the rumors of Andrew, shortly after Kate and William's marriage, being the force behind the change of protocol (wrong term?) so that blood Princesses only have to curtsey to non-blood Princesses(Kate) when they are in the presence of their husbands (William). I'm not totally serious because they wouldn't be looking at her in a mean way knowing they are being photographed but I do often wonder how they feel about her now being Senior over them.

The crazy fascinators, ill-fitting shoes and dumpy dresses (although I understand most women are not tall and with the willowy figure of Kate), they seem not to have a concept of how they look-- ever-- to the public. Desperately in need of stylists! Maybe some of that vacation money would be better spent on one! Otherwise, I enjoyed seeing this look on Kate and she seemed to be enjoying herself. William looked very dapper and handsome. I love how they call each other "darling."

I have to say, I really like these shoes! If she needs to have a pair of nude/beige go to shoes for summer (which I can understand why she does) I hope she chooses these more often. They feel like they harmonize more with her skintone.
ReplyDeleteI was going to post the same kind of response about the shoes. I have been trying to figure out what shoes they are. I think that Catherine has been stepping up her footwear game recently. A sharper pointed toe seems to be what she is enjoying right now. I think the fawn (or something like that) suede is a nice color and worked well with the coat dress.

I think Kate is really very busy: wife, mum, patron, public figure meeting so many people... She's certainly doing a lot. It must be difficult knowing that whatever she does and says will be scrutinized. I wish her courage and wisdom to discern between important and unimportant things.

In both of these outings with the kids, she's in dresses. Is this a personal preference do you think or is this some sort of mandate that dictates dresses are preferred when in London? I would love to see her wear a super nice pant suit to some of the more professional meetings she attends, but I highly doubt that will happen while the Queen is still living. Again, not sure of the protocol. Thoughts?
ReplyDeleteI think it's personal preference. I, myself, haven't worn jeans since I was about... 14 maybe. I just cannot stand pants, so I'm dresses and skirts (or the occational sweatpants at home). And Kate before marriage (while also wearing a fair amount of pants) wore alot of skirts and dresses. So I think it's her preference, especially in the summer and spring.

DeleteThe "Golden Rule" for photographs, legally and ethically, has always been the difference between public & private *property*. It's the golden rule because it's the easiest for courts to prove and disprove if necessary.

On Private property - off limits. With exception of private property that can be *seen* from public property. Recent example: eating at an outside courtyard owned by a private restaurant but is *visible* to people on the street would be fair game, but eating inside a private establishment where you're not visible from people outside would be off limits. It's not whether members of the general public can see you, it's whether they're also on public or private property. That's how the courts see it anyway. And ethically, if you're inside private property most believe you have an expectation of privacy.
It's why I thought the KP letter was over the top, if there are instances of certain photographers behaving badly deal with those photographers, don't punish the whole class :) And don't try to put a bubble on public places or make everyday Brits feel bad for snapping members of the RF if they see them out and about.
To me, the legal definition is not always the same as the moral definition. Ofc the legal definition is this way, because that is how it can be categorized, and then the press accossiation has their own ethcial guidline and every person has to decide on their own moral line. It's not a question of legality in this case, in my opinion.
DeleteI definitely agree Claudia, the letter was way over-the-top and I frankly think it was the start of much of the criticism that mounted slowly slowly after. It certainly was a step backwards with the press. I think that they, just like any other public figure, can be photographed in public. How can someone be "taking away they're right to privacy" when they're out in a public space?? In fact, ethically you could say they are oppressing the right of people to take photographs in public spaces.

I appreciate the points made here, but I want to comment on the idea that they have no expectation of privacy in a public place. I get it, but if we are photographed while shopping or walking in the park, most likely, it was by default. In other words, we were not the photographer's target; we were simply included in a photo taken of someone or something else. In W/K/G/C's position, they ARE the target, so yes, I can understand the distinction between my version of "privacy" in a public place vs. W/K/G/C's definition of it. I hope this makes sense...

ReplyDeleteI love that we were able to get a closer look at it and have not long a picture from the back but also full length shots as well. It is quite lovely and looks great in this setting as well. I like it much better with her hair up I think as opposed to how she wore it at the christening. Her shoes are very similar to the ones she wore during the plane change on her way to NZ. Maybe a little higher heel but same look and feel.
I also appreciate all the tidbits coming out to about Kate doing activities in the background as well. She does seem to be busy which is what I always thought even though it isn't always public. I am jealous that she already has the navy/ivory combination in the great plains dress. I love this pattern and hope to be able to purchase it but now I fear it will be sold out. Oh well, here's hoping.

Good on William to finally attend a garden party. Seems a bit strange to me that this is his first one but maybe this is the first time his schedule has allowed. I guess it seems weird because Kate did a royal duty before him and he is royal blood born. He looks very dapper. Great couple of days worth of engagements. Hope more are announced soon!
He has actually been to one of the queens garden parties before, just that it was the one in Holyrood. It was in 2002.

I noticed a different pattern when it comes to Kate dressing when in the presence of the Queen. If the event is about the Queen - such as the Windsor Horse Show Birthday event or Trooping the Color - Kate always has on something very expensive and never before seen. If the event is about the community - Garden Party, Chelsea Flower Show then she repeats a look, if she's not pregnant. So it depends on the occasion. I think that would make an interesting post when we hit the summer lull - A photo montage of Kate at events with the Queen. Kate's looks/fashion when in the presence of the Queen.

It is completely appropriate to have new outfits when you are a rep of your country. I know there were a few news stories about the total cost(which quite frankly, I thought was very reasonable overall) so maybe she has been keeping that in mind with her choices this month?

( the day visit is always rushed, prefer the after 6:00pm reading /take more focused time). I agree it carries an important message. DeleteThe christening outfit is very beautiful. But I wonder whether it is a bit formal for a garden party, even though Prince William was in top hat and tails. The McQueen dress and the fascinator seem so much more ornate than what other royal women wore. Consider the Queen and the Duchess of Gloucester.
ReplyDeletePrincess Beatrice looked lovely at Chelsea. At Buckingham Palace she looked strangely lumpy. Princess Eugenie wore white to both events and looked cute but not elegant. I am glad to see the York princesses at both events.
I too am pleased to see the York sisters at events, but their outfits were just so strange at the garden party. I normally like Eugenie's look as I think she seems a bit more tasteful than Beatrice, I am no fashionista but I just don't get that skirt?? I must agree with the comment made earlier that they need to figure out their body types and dress accordingly, they both looked "lumpy" as someone pointed out, and they can both look so beautiful.
DeleteOutfit - I love both of the dresses she wore to the christenings. I prefer the one she wore to Charlotte's but they are both beautiful garments. I am really happy that we have another chance to see this one because the first time George and his christening gown blocked a lot of the detail. I love it from the back as well. Love the shoes. A way to do a "nude" shoe but a little snazzier than the sledges. I would love to see the dress from Charlotte's christening again in the not to distant future.
ReplyDeleteShe changed the outfit up enough for the second viewing that it is sort of a "new outfit". The different shoe, the purse and the updo. At least we will be able to tell which picture belongs to which engagement she wore it to.
Letter - I thought this letter was her best yet. Everything that people thought the recent letters lacked was in this letter. At least for me. I love that it seems genuine and her passion for the cause shows through a little. I like that she is making little steps towards more commitment. That is at least the way I see what is happening recently. The photo is also very beautiful. It isn't often someone can pull of the brightest jewel tones, prints and pale colors as well. It seems she favors shades of cream for official photos. Both christening gowns, some of the engagement photos, the head shot up there, and I feel like I am missing something else.
Excited to see who wins the Style Rocks contest. Every person who shared what they would buy makes it clear that we are a stylish bunch.
Kate looks great here! I love her hair up with this outfit- her hair down just competes with the ruffle. I love the new shoes but I hate them with this outfit. They don't match and the texture of the suede is way off given the softness of the dress. I'd have loved to see a lighter shoe here- I miss the sledge!
ReplyDeleteI love today's outfit and am glad that she chose to wear it today. There were very few good detail shots at the Christening. It is so nice to see back views of the dress. The detail and pleats are just wonderful. One question - when comparing it to the Christening pictures - did Kate shorten the skirt, by oh, say 6 cm / 2 inches? It now looks to sit firmly above the knee - I like that line very much. The skirt swings beautifully.

DeleteI really love Kate's outfit here. One thing I will say about her, is that she seems so engaged with people she encounters. She seems to really be interested in the people that she meets, and not in a phony way. At least to me she comes across as very genuine.

Yes the duchess look very nice to see the duchess recycle her outfit during george christening its a great treat for us the picture of princess charlotte and george playing with her mother the duke was great too and prince phillp was good and charming beside the queen they look good together plus the fact prince harry dress like a a neat damper charming the york girls made it fool outfit than chelesea flower garden love outfit there

ReplyDeleteThank you Charlotte for an informative post as always. I was thrilled to see the Christening dress again and to have good views. It is an elegant dress and I like the way the dress moves as she walks. Liked the dress last time and to me it looked good today and very appropriate to the event. I think it might have been colder than one thinks and the Royals only came out at 4pm. Interesting how many people liked the York sisters outfits. I liked bits of their outfits but I don't think the look all together was as good as it could have been. However I also think the outfits did not photograph well. I had a look on the Royal hats blog which has really good close-up pictures of their hats, which I think are interesting edgy creations and could look outstanding with something else. I would love to see Eugenie's with a black outfit.

I was too late to comment on the Flower Show, one of my favourite annual events. Who could not enjoy such beauty? I first skimmed through the post at work at lunch on my phone and my thought when I saw the green Catherine Walker, was oh no way too bright. However when I looked tonight on my pc it was quite a different story. My pc monitor is calibrated for photography and the colours are far closer to reality than most normal screens, which tend to oversaturate colour and back light the images so the images are brighter and lighter. On the calibrated screen the dress looked very pretty and not anything like the cream soda green that it appeared on the phone.. . . It does have good lines.
Thank you, I often wonder how different the clothes look in person than on our screens. The texture, color, movement and light reflective quality of the fabrics and lines of the outfits is often not close to the "real live" version. Ali
DeleteI agree alimai about Eugenie's outfit. In the photos it makes her look boxy but in real life it may have looked very different. Also loved her hat & your suggestion for an alternative look.
DeleteThe light also affects the colour of clothes in photos. I saw the catherine walker green coat in Canberra in strong Australian light & the colour really popped. I've wondered if it looks deeper & 'cooler' in the softer English light. In real life the style of the dress really suited her tall athletic silhouette especially the wide belt.
The nasty sore on the Queen's leg may just be caused by old age. My gran gets similar lesions frequently & she's the same age as the Queen. Hers are caused by circulation being less efficient now that she's about to turn 90.
I haven't had time to read through the comments so I don't know if I'm in the minority here, but I do not care for Kate's look. I'm not a fan of outfits that have fabric popping out around the waist. That combined with the ruffle down the front - just not attractive to me. At least she looks quite elegant, especially compared to what are Beatrice and Eugenie wearing! The photo of the three of them together make them look like Cinderella and her two step-sisters at the ball!

The ruffles and frills on dresses is something I cannot carry off, so kudos to Kate for that! I was wondering though, if it was too hot in that outfit for a garden party. Thank You Charlotte!!XOXO

ReplyDeleteCall me crazy, but I LOVE Eugenie's outfit! It's a little kooky, but fun, and her shoes and hat are super kicky. AND she's wearing what look like some rings, which is always nice to see since the Yorks don't wear much jewelry.

DeleteI actually agree! I love her dress with the collar outside and the fun hem, but it does not work on her body type. I know both York girls have a great eye for fashion, but it doesn't often translate onto their bodies. Someone else wrote earlier in regards to them that "you should dress for the body type you have, not the one you wished you had." So although I love her dress, IMO it did not flatter her figure and it wasn't especially appropriate for the occasion, too casual. As for Bea - ugh. No redeeming qualities to that look, however the day before at the flower show she looked great. It's hit or miss with them, mostly miss.
DeleteShe is radiantly beautiful! Glowing, like in her early months as princess. Loved to see this entire recycle including the hat, and get a look at the waist which is just a tad short IMO. But who cares, the look is incredible! (Wills too! What a pair.) And those shoes are some of the sexiest shoes on the planet!!! Kind of a nude/blush with a sky high heel. Beautiful Kate certainly has the pins to pull them off. Can't say the same about Eugenie and Beatrice, they both looked absolutely lovely at the flower show, but the garden party ensembles were pretty garish and ill-fitting.

I wonder if the Middletons entertained a lot when Kate was at home. Her company manners certainly seem to be above reproach! I love this outfit on her, and like the length of the skirt, just a little above the knee. Thank you Charlotte, once again, for your wonderful blog - checking it in the morning after breakfast is a great way to start the day.

ReplyDeleteI think that his dukedom stops being royal after Richard's death. His son Alexander, as a great-grandson of a sovereign but not in direct line, will inherit an ordinary (:p) dukedom. Same as the Duke of Kent's son.

For some reason, I find this outfit underwhelming. Perhaps because I was looking forward to something new and exciting for a garden party. Oh well, maybe the next engagement. Additionally, I've said it before, but I'm saying it again, get a stylist for Andrew's girls. They look terrible especially when they are in the same picture as Kate.

DeleteThe thing that really jumped out at me was the Duchess having bare legs at the Garden Party. It wasn't very obvious except in the photo where she was talking to the police officer, but it made me wonder. Most of the other women appeared to be wearing stockings, and I thought I had read that the Queen insists on stockings and closed toe shoes being worn for Royal events. This year we have already seen sandals on the tour of India and now bare legs! Are times changing? Will we see some open toe or peep toe shoes in the UK summer?

ReplyDeleteI love the suede pumps with the christening dress. They are such a beautiful color. How women walk on grass in heels like those baffles me, though. I can understand Princess Eugenie's block heels for the Chelsea Garden Show and the garden party at the palace. Not especially pretty, but easier to navigate in!

ReplyDeleteThat will be a big sacrifice considering what she went through twice in her first trimester during both pregnancies. It is said women forget their times of hard labor. The same might be true about forgetting the difficulties of pregnancy in some cases. I have known both kinds. A friend who did not like the changes she had to go through and stopped after one child. A close family member who went on to have five children against her Obstetricians advice (three of them with C-section). The children are grown and doing excellent. She also happened to be a doctor, and resisted her colleagues advise.
