The Duke and Duchess arriving, fresh from Prince William's 34th birthday celebrations yesterday. The event was hosted by the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley in support of Kate's patronage East Anglia's Children's Hospices - with all guests invited as a special thank you for supporting the charity's fundraising efforts for the Nook appeal.
William and Kate received a warm welcome from David and Rose.
Due to the high demands of the charity's specialist services in Norfolk, the team has long outgrown their current hospice in Quidenham, a very old two-storey building. Accessibility and flexibility within the building is restricted and in order to continue to provide their services it was realised a new hospice was very badly needed. EACH obtained planning permission for a new hospice - the Nook - on a five acre site, with a vision to provide the latest and most efficient services. And thus the Nook Appeal was born...
The Nook will be built on a five-acre woodland site in Framingham Earl just south of Norwich and will offer services which are either currently unavailable or extremely limited at Quidenham hospice, such as a hydrotherapy pool, music studio, large rooms for on-site family support groups, larger and more accessible outside space for children to explore and play and private rooms for one-to-one counselling. Tonight's event will see the charity's plans move one step closer towards fruition. The Duchess attended the launch of the Nook Appeal in 2014, and almost two years later its fitting to see her and William at tonight's event, thanking those who have supported the appeal.
Ahead of the event EACH patron and event organiser Emma Deterding said:
'Having been a Patron of EACH for over 25 years, I am proud to be part of something so inspirational. I have seen at first hand how incredible and important the development of the children’s hospice movement is since its beginnings in the 1980s. I continue to be amazed by how hard EACH works to ensure that hundreds of children with life-threatening conditions and their families in East Anglia get the best care possible. The passion and commitment that the staff demonstrates and the care they offer both in the hospices and the community is inspiring and humbling in equal measure.
I would like to thank Their Royal Highnesses the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge for agreeing to join us for this amazing evening. Special thanks are also due to the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley for so generously offering us Houghton Hall as a venue.'

A special five-course meal filled with culinary delights was created by five world-renowned chefs: Galton Blackiston, Sat Bains, Claude Bosi, Tom Kerridge and Mark Edwards.

A champagne reception featured musical entertainment by the Jefford Brothers and Sam Aldersey-Williams, and magician Archie Manners. EACH's Treehouse Choir performed after dinner, followed by a speech from parent Charlotte Markham. Charlotte and her family received care and support from EACH in Ipswich when her son Elliot died at just a few hours old.

Guests heard speeches from critically-acclaimed author and EACH Ambassador Anthony Horowitz OBE and the Marquess of Cholmondeley.

Below we see Kate with Mr. Horowitz who has been an Ambassador for EACH since 2008 and is passionate about the work of the charity. He recently visited the existing hospice in Quidenham to find out more about the plans for the nook and why a new building in Norfolk is so important for care delivery.
Choosing Houghton Hall as the venue for the evening was an excellent idea. What better location to host 'A Taste of Norfolk' than the stately country house which is located just minutes from William and Kate's country home Anmer Hall. It is thought the Marquess and Marchioness, David and Rose, have been an integral part of the Norfolk set the Cambridges socialise with. Kate and Rose are of a similar age, both have young children (and a penchant for Temperley London designs). The couple were guests at the China state dinner last year and most recently William and Kate took the children to the Houghton Hall horse trials.
The Grade I listed building has a rich history. It was built for the de facto first British Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole. Construction began in 1722 and was completed in 1735. Walpole was an extravagant host; hunting parties with local Norfolk gentry would last for weeks at a time. Visits from Royalty were common, and his fellow politicians - particularly members of his cabinet - held their meetings each spring over a three-week period in the rooms at Houghton. These meetings were known as the 'Norfolk Congress'.

More on the history of the hall's residents from Wikipedia:
'Sir Robert Walpole became the 1st Earl of Orford in 1742. Ownership passed to his son and grandson, the 2nd and 3rd earls. On the death of the 3rd earl it reverted to his uncle the 4th Earl of Orford, better known as Horace Walpole. On his death in 1797, possession passed to the family of his sister, Lady Cholmondeley, who died at just 26 years in 1731, more than 65 years before. Sir Robert Walpole's daughter, Mary, had married George Cholmondeley, 3rd Earl of Cholmondeley and Houghton Hall was modified and maintained by her Cholmondeley family across a further span of generations.'
Houghton Hall is considered a key building in the history of Palladian architecture in England. The exterior is both grand and restrained, constructed of fine-grained, silver-white stone. The Gibbs-designed domes punctuate each corner. In line with Palladian conventions, the interiors are much more colourful, exuberant and opulent than the exteriors.

Today, Houghton is the home of David Cholmondeley, 7th Marquess of Cholomondleey. Born in 1960, the old Etonian is a Peer of the United Kingdom and serves as Lord Great Chamberlain. David found his passion in filmmaking and often featured on most eligible bachelor lists. Despite being linked with a number of socialites and well-known figures it was thought he would never settle down. Indeed, there was surprise when it was announced in 2009 he was marry socialite and model Rose Hanbury twenty-four years his junior. Rose's paternal grandmother is Lady Rose Lambert, daughter of the 10th Earl of Cavan: she was one of the bridesmaids at the 1947 wedding of the Queen (then Princess Elizabeth) and Prince Philip.
The couple, who are considered Norfolk's glamour pair, welcomed twin boys Alexander and Oliver in October 2009. According to the Telegraph the couple decided which of their sons would be the heir to the title based on their weight. Alexander, who weighed eight ounces more than his brother, will be the 8th marquess of Cholmondeley. In March they welcomed another addition to their family - a daughter, Lady Iris Marina Aline Cholmondeley. For those interested, the Marchioness wore a colourful print gown from Valentino's Resort 2016 Collection (with many thanks to Galatee Astree).
Due to poor communication around Houghton Hall, there was quite the debate as to which gown Kate was wearing (it turns out the Palace mistakenly released stating it was a 'Jenny Packham gown first worn in LA' which led to the confusion). Richard Palmer was the only reporter covering the event and had to drive five miles to eventually share photos and info.

Meanwhile, we were all speculating on whether Kate chose to repeat her blush sequin Jenny Packham gown or lavender McQueen from LA.
To the delight of many royal fans on social media (yours truly included) the Duchess brought back the breathtaking Jenny Packham gown she wore to the 2011 Ark Gala. It's almost exactly five years since the Duchess wore it for her first official engagement following the royal wedding. It's a gorgeous gown - and one I know many of you will be pleased to see again. :)
The gown was described as "pearlescent rose sequin gown with Swarovski crystal from the SS11 catwalk collection". The dress features layered mesh inserts at neckline, shoulders and sleeves.

Kate teamed the dress with the same shoes and clutch she chose in 2011. Her striking pink Prada Logo Box Clutch.
And L.K. Bennett Agata Sandals.The popular sandals were recently re-released by L.K. Bennett in black suede, navy suede and pink marshmallow (very similar to Kate's). They are available for £250.

The Duchess added an additional touch of sparkle with jewels on loan from the Queen. Kate has been loaned the very elegant chandelier earrings for several formal occasions.
Kate's bracelet was originally a choker Queen Mary used to wear, circa 1920. It was later converted to a bracelet and worn by the late Queen Mother.
The Duchess wore the bracelet for the last year's state banquet.

We also have news of an addition to Kate's calendar. Earlier today, Kensington Palace confirmed the Duchess will present the Art Fund Museum of the Year Prize 2016 at a dinner for her patronage the National Portrait Gallery on Wednesday, 6 July. The prize is awarded annually to one outstanding museum which has shown exceptional imagination, innovation and achievement in the preceding year. The prize of £100,000 is presented each year at an awards dinner attended by some of the UK’s leading figures in the arts and culture sector.
Before that, the Cambridges and Prince Harry will visit France next week (30 June and 1 July) for events commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme.

What a nice appearance. I love how soft her updo is! And I am very VERY Happy to see this bracelet again! So sleek and big and royal and modern at the same time. Also nice that it got history with both Queen Mary and the Queen Mother. I wonder if this is a fellow "permanent loan" as the earrings seem to be? If so, I'm very VERY happy!

They've never had a hired cook that we know of. They have a housekeeper that oversees cleaning and helps with shopping, walking the dog etc. I'm not sure but I think they have one for each of the houses. Cooking is involved in some of their duties, so is helping with the kids and general stuff. But those are more "whatever is needed" positions. And considering how often we hear that Kate loves cooking, I highly doubt that she doesn't cook the majority of the meals. If she does the dishes or shop (although, she's been seen shopping for food and has recently been regularly spotted at farmers markets) is another thing, sometimes Kate maybe does it, sometimes the housekeeper. But I very much belive that Kate does a majority of their meals based of comments and that she seem to like cooking.

She was one of the Queen's three top workers and had worked for the Queen for thirteen years before being hired by William and Kate. One of her duties was to cook and she had a reputation for being an amazing cook. She is purportedly 40 something, single and dedicated to the royal family. So, unless the Queen said she wanted Antonella again, my guess is she is still with Wiiliam and Kate as cook/errand person. I think they supplemented with an additional housekeeper a couple of years ago. They do have a butler/valet for William also.

DeleteI really loved this dress the first time she wore it and I loved it again tonight with the updo. I love the way she changes up her look whenever she "recycles" an outfit. The little tweaks make a world of difference.
DeleteHowever, I was secretly hoping that Kate would wear a dress which she wore before but one which we haven't seen in its entirety before. Don't get me wrong, this dress is exquisite and she was absolute perfection at this event but I would reeeaallly love to see that white dress, with the embellished straps that she wore to a charity event at Clarence House a few years back. I have no idea who the designer of the dress was or if I am even describing it correctly but I would love to see her wear that dress again, with a gorgeous updo and jewels just like how she did with this look. I have read that the royal women can borrow pieces if asked ahead of time. I feel like Kate has decided on these pieces as her favorites and maybe she is allowed regular use of them because of this. She tends to stick to certain things once she finds that she likes them.

DeleteTo me, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley has the quintessential look and style of an english aristocrat. Slightly off. Mild imperfections (or what could be considered as such) and room for eccentricity are part of the philosophy. The pursuit of perfection and doing the correct thing are rather middle class virtues.
Historically, aristocrats enjoyed the freedom to do as they please. Ha, I guess that's what money in abundance can do to you. I think Rose is very pretty and has charisma.
Kate looks lovely; I'm delighted to see one of my favourite gowns again - the bracelet as well. But what a horribly unkind thing to say about the Marchioness of Cholmondeley - I think she is a beautiful woman - not perhaps as conventionally pretty as Kate but with more striking features. And I love her dress - both ladies are perfectly dressed for summer.

With her hair down, she has more of a bohemian, artistic aura vs. the elegance and glamor of Kate's look. A good example of how the right hair with the right dress can change the look....in this case an updo would have elevated the look and shown off the dress more. If you look at her in the picture at Ascot, she has a lovely face, not to mention that for just having a baby in March, she looks great! Love how they seem to be at ease chatting with each other!

Love the dress--one of my all time favs. Loved her up-do--perfect with the dress. The jewelry was nice too. Love the setting. DeleteI find Rose's way of dressing eccentric but kind of morose also. Like visiting the old masters in portraiture, but with a goth/techno vibe. Not my cup of tea. She seems to have kind of a melancholy way about her from the (many) photos I have found of both she and her sister. They are beautiful girls though. I particularly like the photo of bikini clad Rose and Marina, (before they got so thin), standing on either side of former Prime Minister Tony Blair. His ear to ear smile is classic. Who knew the Prime Minister was such an fan of bikinis? :)

Balbina, you said what I almost was going to say- Rose's beauty is very English and very aristocratic - which by birth and marriage she is.
DeleteKate's glossy beauty is not per se more royal - eccentricity and naturalness is more the norm in the royal family - (think Princess Anne) although some like Princess Alexandra manage both - she was very stylish in her youth but is often eccentric in dress now - sometimes a bit much so to my thinking.
I didn't care for the snake dress but I did like Rose's hat and she has wonderful eyes. I loved her evening gown for the Chinese banquet and I like this one, although I can certainly appreciate why some might not - it's a bold dress.
I'm not overall in love with the present 70's Bohemian revival whether it is Kate's lace dress, or most of Tatiana's clothes or some of the recent outfits of other royal ladies. But somehow this gown of Rose's works for me for the occasion - the floral look seems very country.
I never have a problem with anyone not liking a dress, a style, hairstyle or even how an outfit looks on someone, as that is in a person's control. But how people physically look is usually off limits to me (although I confess I've broken my own standards with Camilla.) I read Tedi's remark broadly - but I trust it wasn't meant that way and was referring just to style and gown.

DeleteI wish women would not tear each other down. Looks are something people don't have control over. Labelling someone unattractive is not necessary and very unkind. Is that how you speak to people in real life? That said yes she has classic aristocrat looks are dress-sense. I think she is a striking woman, maybe not conventionally pretty as Kate is but very striking and intriguing to look at.

I have been away all day and just saw all the comments about my remark regarding Rose's outfit. My apologies to all. I meant no offense to the lady. Just her hair, and choice of gown. I truly feel terrible, as I would not speak about a person's physical attributes in a negative way. Rose has her own look, I just felt she could have chosen something more flattering to her. I wonder if we will ever see the teal Jenny Packham again, for me that is the most beautiful of all the gowns that Kate has worn, the colour was simply perfect for her.

Rebecca - I am one of those who love, love, love this dress. I prefer this look to the first time she wore this dress. The soft updo, the earrings and bracelet work perfectly together. Plus the updo lets the neckline of the gown shine more.

Anon 23:37 - Thank you! I think it was just a good guess on my part. Lol. I love this gown. I think this showing was amazing. Love the earrings & bracelet. Just enough sparkle or icing on top of the cake for me! Her hair was lovely as well. A bit different than most of her recent updos. She seems to be repeating many of her early outfits as the DoC so I wouldn't doubt that the dove gray might make an appearance soon. I think the color, cut and formality would work well for the upcoming engagements at the end of the month.
DeleteOn my reply on the Ascot post I mentioned that I would love, and that I would do this, if Catherine commissioned three or so lovely formal gowns that would work for state occasions or galas to go with three sets of jewelry she has available to her. I think it would be a lovely way to make the jewelry shine and Catherine as well. That way her ruby necklace could be worn if a gown with a proper neckline to showcase it was in her wardrobe. I know that she usually isn't flashy and three looks sounds like a lot but she attends quite a few formal occasions so they would be put to good use. I also think this would solve the red cape over the white D&G she wore that didn't look like they belonged together. One gown for warm weather, one for cold and perhaps one that would work for either. The earrings she wore to the James Bond premiere, that here mother wore, would look amazing paired with a matching necklace, or diamond necklace, with the right gown. I think most of her formal looks are wonderful but I think doing this would bump her looks up another level.
I am not sure I love the gown Rose wore tonight but she looked completely appropriate and is a beautiful woman.

DeleteIn that picture, Princess Madeleine was brilliantly dressed like a story book princess for a children's party. I loved it, so understanding of the dreams of little folk. As for Kate, in general I liked her updo, but the loose lock on the left did not match the curl on the right, and I thought both conflicted a bit with her earrings. Loose locks can be fetching, but they need to be carefully careless!
DeleteKate must be very slim now, since she has repeated two outfits from her Canadian tour of 2011. This Packham gown is one of my favorites, but I don't want her to overdo the weight loss.
I wish William would just ignore the photographers and look elsewhere. His sad gazing at them does not suit the occasion.

I don't think William is gazing at a photographer. If you are talking about the more group like picture, in other pictures there they applaud and look up to the sky and look at David talking etc. So I think William is just looking in Davids general direction while still facing whatever they were watching.

Actually no Anon 12.51. It's a common misconception (I belived it myself at first). But a Queen mother is a former Queen that is now the mother to the regent. So they keep their Queen title. It's jsut a honorary title, and not a real one. I think the real one is "Dowager Queen" or something of the sort but Queen Mother have been used as a nicer one while still keeping the Queen title. (I might be off on some points so someone who know more feel free to correct me)

I was just wishing yesterday that Kate would wear this Jenny Packham gown again! And so she has! This designer has provided Kate's best evening looks, and they are all so different from each other. Kate was perfectly attired for the gala.

DeleteI longed to see this dress again but the first photos left me a little deflated. I think the loose up do looks heavy from the front. Great in profile but off from the front. I thought the same with her Chinese banquet do too. Love the dress and jewellery though.

The dress needs those curves in the front or that just draws the eye to the fact that it needs curves there and then no one fully appreciates the other details of the dress. The dress is low cut in the front to be sexy. It needs curves and some cleavage to pull that off. Who cares if it is daring and sheer in the back if the front looks lacking.
Similarly, the mint green lace dress she wore to visit the Prime minister of India had a pronounced bodice problem also, although different from the problem with the teal gown. Kate needs a stylist, for the umpteenth time, Kate needs a stylist. She has been dressing like Kate again recently and that is good but fit and purpose of design need to be fundamental considerations going forward.
I so agree with you 15:36. It could be a beautiful dress but I thought from the first time she appeared in that teal dress that it did her no favors.

ReplyDeleteBest sources I've seen are designers who have commented directly that Archer was their point person for Kate. The most recent, and perhaps most revealing, was an interview Anita Dongre gave the Telegraph after India. She said Archer got in touch about a month before the tour, identifying herself as Kate's stylist, and asked for some clothes. They sent her a look book and then Archer came in personally and got some pieces for fittings.
Dongre said she was very surprised when she saw Kate in her dress, had no idea if it would be worn, but that Archer had made substantial alterations. "Her stylist had taken the stole and converted part of that into the belt and then chopped it off so it can be worn as a dress. She's amazing." Dongre said of Archer's design.
Numerous royal correspondents have also reported that Archer was originally a KP office PA who was now working as Kate's stylist, which indicates to me it's information they've all gotten during background updates from KP staff, or even from Kate or Natasha themselves at the pre or post tour get-togethers, which are always off the record.
Big day in UK tomorrow - I'm on edge of my seat wondering which way vote will go.

So glad Kate wore her beautiful pink gown again and the Queen's bracelet. I don't like the earrings and never have liked them. So many other choices she could have made? She looked lovely though.
Would love to know the menu. They no doubt had separate wine pairings with each course, with the wines most likely being very rare wines. How would you partake normally after five courses and not be tipsy. I would be more than tipsy. Two glasses and I'm done. Not the best for a formal, "business" dinner.
What a waste of good wine to be able to only have a few sips at each course.
I didn't like Rose's gown or hair. Her gown looked like a strange garden for the snakes on her other dress. Her hair lacked luster and looked unkept and the part in the middle didn't do her any favors. I was thinking she might dress that way. Kind of hippie, goth, wood nymph. I think the old silk wallpapers, ancient furniture and heavy curtains and tapestries of Houghton Hall might be getting to her. That place would be a strange place to live if you think about it, kinda like an old museum. I am sure her gown cost very much, but It doesn't make her look good. It is almost as if she was trying to not look nice. Not to be mean. Just giving my opinion, fashionwise. I am actually sort of a fan of Rose, actually. Wish her only the very best. She walked into some heavyweight pages of history also.

I think Rose purposefully goes light on the makeup/hair... not sure why. But have you seen her modeling pictures? They're strikingly beautiful. She could easily do that, but chooses not to for some reason, and is still gorgeous.

DeleteYes, I have seen Rose's modeling photos and others of she and her sister, Marina, and their mother Emma. Her photos in Houghton Hall are beautiful. Rose and her sister have always dressed quirky. What Albina said on this page describes that perfectly. Her sister, Marina's wedding outfit was really, ah, different. Rose could have looked really beautiful this evening but her hair, palor, and that astro turf dress just made her look beleaguered instead of beautiful, IMHO.

ReplyDeleteBy all reports, they have a cook-housekeeper. I found William's teasing remark rather strange -most men joke of getting too fat from their wife's cooking - as a tease but also a complement. I'm not quite sure what he meant.

DeleteI think it was his general teasing. To me it seemed like a "irony" thing. Like a huge hip hopper being called Tiny. That because they know Kate is a good cook, and she is confident in that, then they can tease her. Reminds me of the engagement comment "You liked my cooking" she said and he answered "Ah, your cooking was alright" while you could clearly see he was jesting. To me this felt of the same sort.

I agree Julia, it was strange. I'm not sure if William is not at ease joking about "the wife and home life" or joking around in general, I feel he has made some good quips at times so usually give him the benefit of doubt, but the quips regarding Kate are odd.
DeleteThis was really a put-down joke, "her cooking's so bad I'm starving" basically. And it reminded me of his line about "her nightmare hair" - that I found really odd considering we know it's her prize possession, she's admitted as much, even saying to Paul Emsley she wanted it to be the signature of her first official portrait.
I know I'm playing armchair psychologist, some couples do have that almost sarcastic rapport, a lot of mutual digs. I'm not trying to stir the pot. Frankly William reminds me so much of Charles at times, Charles said numerous daft things just like this (and still does)... people laughed politely because he's the Prince of Wales but when he walked past they looked at each other and said "what was he on about?" :)
Or it could mean he was joking about not liking her cooking, so was eating less food and staying slim.

I read it the way Anonymous did but it could be any of the interpretations. Claudia is right about Charles and I wonder if it all comes from Philip who has that sort of edge. But for William, for someone who talks about being sensitive to harsh bullying and teasing, it seems a bit mean. When we hear Kate's banter, it seems wittier.
DeleteI know we all have different views on her hair but I really like this updo. It has a soft quality perfect for the occasion and it shows the dress off well. Glad to see her experimenting with new and attractive updos. I actually like Rose's natural look and liked it when Kate wore her hair that way in Canada - straight and pulled off from her face. She hasn't used that style in a while. (But my favourite remains her shorter look which I thought looked great on her - sorry she was teased about it looking old, it looked professional to me.)

DeleteAs for William's joke, it is actually very English to have such depreciative banter. It's similarly a way of complimenting EACH's dinner or saying they're looking forward to it. It's refreshingly normal and shows how comfortable they are with each other. I think we all know William is proud of his wife.
Catherine seems to be a person who likes to keep her body running in top form. It is obvious she still works out and I have read that she does yoga or pilates. I cannot remember which but she spends time trying to stay trim and fit. There was talk of her making the climb and not breaking a sweat. I have also read, and I don't remember where, that she likes to eat healthy. I took the comment as joking banter between the two of them. That she feeds him, takes care of him, with healthy food instead of him eating out all the time. When my husband and his colleagues are out of state for training they end up eating out for almost all of their meals and many of those are at fast places because they don't have the time or inclination to buy and prepare food. When my husband returns home he is excited to have a home cooked meal as opposed to junky food. He has pointed out that eating balanced meals at home helps him stay in the shape required for his job a lot better than eating out does. That is honestly how I took the comment. I could be wrong.
DeleteMy husband and I have been together 15 1/2 years and married over 13 years and we have odd senses of humor. To outsiders many of the remarks we make may seem cutting or cruel but because we know each other, know the inside jokes or information only we know, we know they aren't meant in a negative way at all. Or, like a previous reply said, he could be one of those people who gets a bit nervous in some settings and blurts out things that either don't come out right or seem odd. Regardless they have been together a very long time so whatever they do for meals at home must work for them.
I think it is a way of saying, don't you see I am not thin. It is another way of a complement. I understood it the very first time positively, and still do. I have heard such conversations in the past from others.

DeleteI am also a fan of this look! I think we've got a winner! I like the softer, looser updo. I would love to see her in a Princess Madeleine updo like Rachel from Sweden mentioned earlier. I loved how she carried her wine glass and clutch in her left hand leaving her right hand free to shake hands. That showed her experience with these type of occasions. I do think she has got the hang of her job and is doing well at it.

I get that having it down long and flowing might not be the right look either, but how about something appropriate that is as beautiful as she is and as that dress is?
I don't see what's so matronly with that hair. And all the royals seem to be wearing it. Mary does it alot, Letizia does it. All the 3 Swedish princesses does it (including their wedding days). I think it's a very pretty and classic look and it seem to be rather "in" at the moment.

Like the dress. Not my most favorite but Kate definitely looks great in it. I also prefer it with her hair up. It allows the details of the dress to shine. Same with the earrings. Big/fancy/fun but also understated enough not to fight the dress. But I am going to be the jerk that points out Kate needs to have her roots touched up. I clicked on the pic of her facing forward and the regrowth jumped out at me. Made me smile a bit. Hopefully, the dinner was able to raise(really exceed) their goal for tonight!

DeleteI posted before, not sure it showed up but I agree she has lots of grey and really needs a new colorist that knows how to cover the grey and give her hair some life. I think her hair in part looks a bit less good because she has so much grey running through it now. When I started to go grey I found it really "blahhed" my hair out and I had to work with a good colorist to find the right product and color, plus sadly some of us need to be in like clockwork every 27, 30 etc. days. ali

She looked So Lovely Tonight! The Definite Duchess! However, I will never forget how she Absolutely Sparkled during that First Wearing! Her Face, Hair & Her Smile all the way through her eyes Sparkled!:) I don't know what was different about her make up, during that first wearing of the dress.... but her eyes were exquisite! ReplyDeleteThe gown is among my favorites. Like some others I assumed there would be a rewear and had a premonition this would be the dress. I noticed that the top edge along the neckline is folded differently than the first wear. Having said this, the DoC's hair from the first wear was also one of my faves. While she looked elegant today, like several other posters, I find the updo aging. While beautiful, I think the hairstyle adds 10 years to her face. I cannot speak to the other royals, but I do follow Queen Letizia's looks. Her styling is fabulous, fresh, colorful, includes rewears and is always interesting. Plus she includes trousers! But as to Letizia's hair, there is little to compare. The Spanish Queen always changes up her hair. She does not limit herself to one style.

DeleteThere was a video of the Queen tapping William on the shoulder and telling him in no uncertain terms, "William stand up" during the flyby on the balcony. The Commander in Chief was not pleased that he wasn't giving the military flyby the respect it demanded. William had been stooping beside George and had been speaking to him. William immediately stood up.
I saw that. Very amusing, AND unusual.
DeleteThose huge urns or vases in the third photo need some greenery or some flowers. They look forlorn empty like that. It is a gala. The empty urns do not look festive.

I can't believe they left them empty. Did anyone else feel that way? I noticed that first thing.

DeleteI just love this gown so much. Just my opinion, this dress would look great with a tiara with it. It would be so beautiful if she would wear it to a state banquet. It also looks like the marchioness Rose and Catherine called each other before the reception and both decided to wear something shiny lol. Just a theory.

By the way, what does "Grade I" house mean? I've seen that term before in descriptions of English buildings.
I assume it's historically marked. There are certain levels of markings (at least here in Sweden). Sometimes a part of the house is of limits to renovations (only allowed to do restorations), sometimes it's fountain, sometimes the exterior and sometimes a whole building. I assume it's such a historical grading.
DeleteSo beautiful! Perfect in every way and a totally glamorous venue and crowd. Glad to see them both enjoying some champagne. I often wonder about their private social activities and whether they are ever in a position to totally relax and have a few (or more) drinks.

ReplyDeleteThat is all boho/goth/techno hipster stuff. Completely sheer dresses that have black panty/shorts and black bras underneath, floral sheer dresses like Rose's. Hers seems to be sheer also. Did anyone notice that? There is one almost, if not, exactly like Rose's, shown at Neiman Marcus and it is sheer except for where the flowers are, and on one side of the bodice on the one at Neiman Marcus there are no flowers where you might think there should be flowers. I don't know if Rose's dress was like that or not.
The hairstyles on the models are also very medieval styles with the goth/techno also. Just because the designers put that stuff out there doesn't mean people have to wear their stuff, lol. To stay in business, the design houses have to come up with a collection each season whether they are inspired or not for the designs. Nice to consider before following the "trends".
I mean, if you want to go naked, why not just cut to the chase and go naked and not pay $2,700 or more for what amounts to little more than a sheer body veil. lol
I think her was lined. And she clearly liked it and bought it.

ReplyDeleteI do have one observation about this dress and it could just be the pictures - but does it look like the dress has lost sequins? Especially where her right hand/clutch hits her thigh and at the back of the dress? Perhaps the dress wasn't stored properly? Maybe it is just me... I am sure her "people" would not have let her wear it if it wasn't in amazing condition...
Again, Charlotte - thank you for my weekly fix of all things Kate - I love seeing what she and Wills are up to and you always do such an amazing job!
Seeing that photo of Kate wearing the dress 5 years ago makes me miss those days when she wore her hair down more often with evening dresses. I suppose she's older now and wants to look more sophisticated, but I am getting a little tired of the updos lately. I suppose I think that when you're dressing up and your hair is that gorgeous, you should show it off. On the other hand, Rose could have benefitted from a more elegant style to her hair. What a mess!

I have to say it takes a very VERY confident (and brave) woman to wear a dress 5 years old, and 2 kids later, and a dress that is very unforgiving (will show every tug and bulge possible). Its not like she could hope there would not be side by side comparisons of the last wear with this one, particularly if it were not a favorable comparison. That alone speaks volume to her confidence levels. When you add to that what you see in her posture and demeanor, well she's truly come into her own. Bravo.

LLLLLLOvE that Gucci suit and hat against that rose back drop - just so cool!!! She must feel like a walking fashion spread every day in her gorgeous manor home. What fun!

I think the Duchess looks absolutely beautiful!! I would not change a thing. Her hair is particularly lovely with the soft updo, and it allows the neckline of the dress to shine. I hadn't noticed it's ethereal loveliness when she wore it with her hair down. Also, she has a beautiful air of confidence and grace this evening. BRAVO!!
