Ahead of the engagement the Palace said "Her Royal Highness became Royal Patron of EACH in January 2012 and has supported this organisation by attending a number of official engagements since that time."
The charity supports families and cares for children and young people with life-threatening conditions. Their specialist services include nursing care, symptom management support, well-being activities, and therapy and counselling – all meeting the individual needs of the child or young person, and the whole family.

Kate was greeted by the show's team and EACH representatives.
Kate also met Michael Linnit (Producer), Mr Mark Bramble (Theatre Director), Dr Johnny Hon (Executive Producer) and his wife Vicky. Michael Linnit and Michael Grade, together with the Global Group of Companies for Gate Ventures, will be supporting the Nook appeal for the run of the show.
Kate was presented with a programme for the evening from 12-year-old Ollie who uses the hospice at Milton in Cambridgeshire.
Ollie Duell lives with a complex medical condition that affects his bowel and stomach. In October 2010 he underwent a transplant of those vital organs, but it was ultimately unsuccessful as Ollie’s body rejected the new tissues in 2014. It means Ollie needs to be attached to several tubes to help with breathing, feeding and more. He is also attached to a pump 22 hours a day and requires 36 medicines four times a day plus four lots of intravenous drugs. In addition, Ollie also has an under-active thyroid, juvenile arthritis and sleep apnoea. He can walk short distances, but often needs an electric wheelchair. It's been an enormously difficult journey for Ollie's family who have found a constant source of support in EACH. He's been visiting the Milton hospice since he was just three and now benefits from two or three day-long care sessions each month and also enjoys hydrotherapy to alleviate pain in his joints. Ollie's mother Claire said: "Without EACH I really don't believe we would have made it this far together as a family. They make a really hard time just that little easier to deal with." Ollie has been hugely excited about tonight, meeting the Duchess and seeing the musical. EACH revealed"he recently showed off his own musical credentials at EACH’s Christmas party when, although naturally shy, he decided to stand up and sing for guests, prompting tears from his family and members of our care team who have been with them through their journey."
Readers will be familiar with the Nook appeal which Kate officially launched in 2014. EACH has a hospice at Quidenham in Norfolk and are currently fundraising for a new purpose-built one, which is to be called the Nook and will help to provide more families with the same facilities as those offered by their hospices in Cambridgeshire, Essex and Suffolk. The appeal aims to raise a total of £10 million and they are half way there. Trojan fundraising efforts have been underway attempting to secure the latter half of funds needed. Indeed, an auction of the Boden hat Kate tried on during an EACH charity shop opening raised almost £900. The charity shared further good news revealing they have been pledged £250,000 from a very generous donor and are hoping proceeds from tonight's event will see them getting closer to their goal. The revival of the popular Broadway musical 42nd Street stars Grammy winner Sheena Easton and is expected to be hugely popular, as even the preview performances have received standing ovations. Based on the novel by Bradford Ropes and the subsequent 1933 Hollywood film adaptation, the show focuses on the efforts of famed dictatorial Great White Way director Julian Marsh to mount a successful stage production of a musical extravaganza at the height of the Great Depression.
The show includes songs such as 'We’re in the Money', 'Lullaby of Broadway', 'Dames', 'I Only Have Eyes For You' and '42nd Street'. The musical has played to great global acclaim for almost 40 years and its popularity serves as a legacy to Gower Champion, the legendary director and choreographer of the original Tony Award-winning production. The new West End production will be directed by the show’s author and director Mark Bramble.

Hi, Sarah. I politely disagree on the 3/4 length. It is wonderfully feminine and flattering on the right people, and the perfect opportunity to display a gorgeous pair of shoes. Unfortunately Kate is unimaginative with her shoes, despite her deep pocketbook. I think if the dress had been styled appropriately you might not hate that length so much. But of course, we all have different taste and it's all good. She looks pretty, how could one say she doesn't - but in my humble opinion it is not a homer unless... I think for me, the hair and acccessories are lacking. The dress is certainly a thing of beauty...

Camilla wears red ballerina length (disastrously in my opinion although there are Camilllaites who liked it) and Kate dazzles her off the map - looking stunning in a length that is very hard to wear at best - no diamonds necessary, just Kate's own beauty.
I suppose this much be a coincidence but it's an interesting one. I can't think that William and Kate are happy with new biography of Charles and the "friends" of Charles and Camilla who spread the dirt about Diana's mental condition - which the Camilla crowd has always used against her - in complete opposition to what Heads Together is supposed to be about.
Regardless of how Chris lauded their recent tour, a book denigrating Diana is totally counterproductive to that. And, especially because of the Heads Together initiative. Why would anyone put out a book like that at this time or any other? If I were Charles, I would make some kind of comment against the book, for William and Harry's sake if for no other reason.

Add to that the fact that being photographed always adds a few pounds... Camilla can't compare, yet many women out there have a body similar to hers and most women do not have one like Kate's. With Camilla's body shape, you have to go for wider cuts but then people will never enjoy that as much because it can't create a silhouette like Kate's.

Agree. Comparing a 69 year-old of full-figured shape to a 35 year-old of tall, slender bouncy-haired glory is monumentally unfair, to put it gently. That said, I adore the vintage look of this dress, Kate looks gorgeous in it. If she's going to do those earrings, I say do a ponytail and let those curtain tassels rock.
DeleteFirst of all, I don't like Camilla, but I try not to be prejudiced - I give no passes to royal ladies, young or old - but when Camilla looks nice - I say so, and I have seen her look nice. I didn't think the green lace was bad on her. But I do think all of us, regardless of age, should be mindful of what styles suit us and what don't. I could never at any age, have worn that dress of Kate's successfully, not because I wasn't slim, I was as slim as Kate and taller, but just because that full skirt would not have looked right on me. Camilla chose a dress that didn't look right on her - it made her look much bigger than she is and called attention to some of her worst features in an unforgiving colour. She gets no pass from me because of age. That red dress was simply a terrible choice as the mirror should have told her.

Who knows. We never will but royals send messages in oblique ways and I'm not sure we aren't seeing one of them.
Julia - I agree about the red dress and don't think you were being cruel or unreasonable. If you dress for your body then age isn't always a huge factor. The way the skirt and bodice were attached on Camilla's red dress just didn't flatter her figure. I have seen many women, even Camilla before, who have that body type that look stunning because they dress for their body shape and size instead of trying to make their body fit a style. I don't really have much to contribute as far as Kate wearing similar dresses so soon after Camilla. I would imagine that they both plan their wardrobes a decent length of time before events so perhaps it was coincidence.
DeleteThat red dress on Camilla was shocking, but I wonder whether it was symbolic. The color and the poppy-like flowers could have been a comment about Italy's position in World War I. Given World War II, and even Italy's motivations during WWI, that earlier alliance is not likely to receive much attention during the centennial. But in light of Brexit, perhaps all European alliances are to be noticed in one way or another. Charles and Camilla were off to Austria shortly afterward, which would have made diplomacy ticklish. The dress seemed so uncharacteristic of Camilla, that I wondered if it had some special purpose. If so, there was no subtlety about it!

ReplyDeleteI agree, this is one of my favourite dresses on her. And yet another one with great rewear possibilities. Here it was styled to be fun with the hair and earrings. But it also has a possibility to go rather stately with proper vault jewels and an updo!

DeleteI just saw a pic in the DM which gives a peak at the back of the program booklet and it seems the dancer depicted there wore a red costume and red shoes in what seems like the same shade of red as the Duchess' dress and shoes (to my untrained eyes they seem to be the same shade in a lot of the pictures). Perhaps the program picture was an inspiration when the accessories were selected ~ just a thought ...

DeleteI like that silhouette on Kate; I think she wears it well. I love that sort of look, but I'm not crazy about the way she styled it at all. To go with the 40-s or 50's theme, some clumpy colored stone earrings like they wore back then would have really looked good, rather than red tassels. I could have loaned her a couple of pairs that the Dowager gave me. And then a snappy multi colored clutch would have amped it up a lot. The shoes could come from one of the colors in the clutch.

I don't know if it is the odd length paired with the pumps that is making her look short and squat or something else but she seems overwhelmed by the dress. Also, this is a lot of red. Wish her acessories were some other color. Finally, not a fan of the earrings either. They look too much like upholstery poms and tassels. Sorry to be so negative:(

I think nitpicking can be fun. I always think as long as people can diffirentiate between "I don't like" and "This is ugly/inappropriate", and when people comment with a self awareness of their nitpicking, I see no issue with it at all. Starting with "ofc she looks perfectly appropriate" or putting in a "I'm just nitpicking" or something of the sort goes a long way though. I have noticed that sometimes nitpicking can end up looking like a "list of faults" and then it can leave a sour taste, even when not intended :P

I'm sorry to say the only parts of this outfit that I like are the clutch and the pumps! The fabric of the dress looks stiff and uncomfortable, and busy, and why is there a white bra showing in back, while the front is a contoured bodice that matches the overlay? Perhaps the design is supposed to match the Broadway Street Station? It looks very similar. The dress has been compared to Dior, but someone pointed out that the musical is from the 30s. Anyway, this is the first time I have seen Kate in a dress that I did not think she could improve by simply putting it on!

DeleteShe was a "part of the stage". The whole ensemble seems to be considerate of the very occasion purposefully for her role there. Others under-dressed were not necessarily the highlight of the evening even with some star power. The earrings pass for this day and time. The length of skirt gave it more impact / better than maxi or much shorter. It is all strikingly delightful presentation ( yes all red too) which can make you remember the production and her patronage for EACH.

In some of the pictures of Kate seated in the box, it appears that she was accompanied by Sophie Agnew and Miguel Head, who I think is mainly William's assistant. Maybe Miguel is helping Sophie fill in for Rebecca Deacon? I also noticed Miguel at the other recent engagements where Sophie attended.

I have no problem with nice clothes and she has to spend money, but WWKD on twitter are starting to track clothes and budget, and they said Jan-Mar this year is more than £57,000 - more than $70,000

If she would change her hair and jewels she could really give a dress a new look.
I also thought she would've repeated something from her early married years for this event. I'm surprised by this outfit & love it, but I'm also surprised by how much she has spent on her wardrobe this year so far. I guess that's part & parcel with the steady flow of appearances/engagements the Duchess has made over the last few months, which I'm pleased to see. It does seem like an awful lot of $$$ though.

Kate at 42nd street, and of course Harry picking up Diana's work with his landmine speech tonight. I love that he had the two young men who met Diana in 1997 with him and said "When my mother said goodbye to Zarko that August, weeks before her untimely death, she told him he would not be forgotten. Please help me keep her word to Zarko and Malic and others like them."

Not sure what to think about her hair, it is very pretty for sure.. but I think engagement and dresses like these ask for an updo. On the other hand; I wear my own hair also down a lot (but don't have a hairdresser to make a beautiful updo anytime).
As always, she is beautiful. She looks very comfortable in this dress, and it shows. I think the length and color suits her perfectly. She reminds me of Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, and Jacqueline Kennedy all rolled into one.

I saw the first look and was just underwhelmed. Love the top portion of the dress, then I saw the length, it just looks odd. Also did not care for the shoes. Then the hair, it's the same old hair. I think she has gorgeous hair and should be worn down for certain occasions, but the top of dress was quite pretty. Would have liked to see it shine a bit more.

I love this look! I can't say I love it entirely because those earrings just don't work for me but she looks magnificent. This length of dress is so hard for most people to pull off but I think does it beautifully. I think the fabric and the dress being partially lined make this more modern and younger looking which is great for Kate. I don't mind the shoes with the dress but it would have been fun to see it with shoes like the model wears in the photo or even her silver Oscar De La Renta pumps. She looks happy and healthy and that is all I wish for her! Hoping they make a ton of money for EACH tonight.

ReplyDeleteAbout her jewelry, if she is not dipping into the vaults I kind of prefer her to go for interesting costume jewelry lile this, rather than the last two Kiki pairs that are vault like huge, very expensive and made from fairly cheap stones.
She looks lovely. The earrings are fun. She is so much better dressed than everyone else there as it is. Morgan Freeman is in a baseball cap! The jewels in the vault are not hers to take and wear. Thank goodness she didn't go for sexy as some of you always plead, bending down for the boy from hospice in the wheelchair! She is working for a cause and she does an honorable job. When she arrives she seems to truly arrive and appears pleasant to all. I find that aspect of her fascinating.

DeleteNow that I've seen more photos, I can still say that I LOVE this color and fit, especially for a show like 42nd Street--it reflects the feel of that era so well!! I wish it were a tiny bit shorter, but I still love how full and swishy the skirt is. Kate can't go wrong in this color and I'm thrilled she wore Marchesa! It's one of my favorite brands.

DeleteLove love love this dress! I can see the issue with tea length but for this style, it's perfect. Any shorter and it's a tutu, any longer and it's a weird cupcake wedding dress-esque thing. The shoes, meh. I would not do match/matchup but that's Kate. Not to sound super snarky, but I think she has to match her shoes to her dress. And the earrings-they are horribly ugly and I would never wear them, BUT I do appreciate that she at least tried to experiment and went big and bold and didn't stick with her usual little Kiki sparklers(and I do love those. Variety is just fun sometimes).

I was taken aback when scrolling. I see Kate, looking fancy and lovely, then Judy Murray in jeans. For a split second I was like, 'man, Kate is way overdressed.' And then I remembered that it's the theater and pretty much everything goes nowadays(though dressing up for a show is way more fun!).

DeleteI am not a huge fan of gold accessories but I recently attended a black tie wedding and wore a dress about the same color as this dress and paired it with some really cute gold heels, purse and jewelry and it was really cute. I think that gold would have looked wonderful here even though usually I am more of a black or silver accessory person.

Love love love the dress and the earrings! Gorgeous! I do not enjoy the matchy matchy shoes and bag. I think black would have been a better option. Also agree with some previous comments that her hair would have been better pulled back. Would have shown off the earrings more. It's 50/50 for me. Do absolutely love this dress though.

Yes, some of the gowns of that era were shorter--especially as the inverted tea cup silhouette got wider; however, the length of Catherine's gown is both on trend and in keeping with the era it references. After that, it's a matter of what each individual does or does not "like." I don't quite understand why the tea length is disliked so much, except that taste varies.
I like this look. Having worn it when that styling made earlier reincarnations, I can say it feels incredibly feminine yet sleek. I would have chosen the same shoes but mixed it up with a bit of subtle but contrasting bling or sheen in the bag. The earrings are fun but not my favourites as I always prefer genuine stones. If it were up to me, I would also have opted for a low chignon rather than loose hair, but I find the whole ensemble quite lovely. It will be interesting to see how it fares in a future vote.
An aside: The costumes in the show's trailer are amazing.
Skirts like that are amazing. I think chances are VERY high that at least one twirl was made in this dress before leaving for the event, and maybe another in her new tap shoes when coming home!

The detail on the bodice is gorgeous with the lattice & rosette effect, along with the crystal embellished waist - Marchesa Notte sure know how to make beautiful, feminine dresses! I wish she would've have chosen her black suede clutch & strappy Gianvito's she debuted in Paris, instead of these burgundy accessories, she almost blends into the red carpet! Her hair is luscious, but covers the detail of the neckline, which is a shame. A half updo would've sufficed here.

DeleteI'm not a fan of Kate in a ballerina (tea)length dress. It's not a great skirt length on her, esp. with the full skirt on it. She's a bit too tall to wear that length with a full skirt and then on top, the 5" spike heel just adds to her height that makes her look 'off.' I really wished she had worn her hair up - it's a bit messy and the great earrings would have worked better with a soft up-do. As it is, she has too much fluff at the ear level between all that hair and then those earrings as well. Love this color on Kate however.

It was similar to what was said about the way she looked in the jade green dress in India. So now, perhaps sensitized by comments, she wears a visible white sports bra with this sheer- at-the-top red number. To my mind, it is just one of the mistakes for this look, including the fact that the dress should have had a built-in bra. Kate of her stylist was careless in putting it together.
DeleteI love this dress. I've loved every tea-length dress she has worn of late, and I hope she keeps wearing them. They look fabulous on her. The only think that I would have changed is the shoes. The dress is full and powerful, so a strappy open toe would have lightened things up a bit. And black would be my choice. Sort of like on the model. Overall I think she hit it out of the park with this one.

ReplyDeleteLovely as always! Comments have been fun to read. I ADORE a 3/4 length dress - reminds me of all the 1950's movie stars and movies - very Grace Kelly IMO. With her long legs - it's perfect on the Duchess. I like the "dressy but not a gown" look which would have been too much for an opening night. Love the dress. Earrings (to me) are awful. They are not my taste I understand, but they seem too bohemian for this elevated dress. She needed a garnet, ruby or diamond on the ear.

ReplyDeleteI had to do a little ovation for Kate tonight. I think she choose well. I love the dress. The color, the pattern of the fabric, the fullest of the skirt would only work with the length that is was. Of course it's midi so many of you dislike it but I think it's well designed and flattering on Kate.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw her earrings, I thought "Kate's hip". Tassel jewelry is very popular and this was a good event to wear those earrings. Why not? She'll have plenty of events to pull from the "vault" and adorn herself with rubies. These were fun for a really fun theater evening out.
Now, I have to mention Ollie - how great did he look? What a special night for him. I'll bet Kate made him feel like a million bucks!
Earrings are a no-no. Shoes too heavy for the dress.

ReplyDeleteI love this dress on Kate. The color, the full skirt, and the length are perfect! It's not too formal, but also dressier than a more casual "day" dress. It's the perfect in-between look!
I had to comment because 42nd Street holds a special place in my heart- my husband and I saw this musical when I was 40 weeks pregnant, and the next morning I went into labor. We joke that all of the tap dancing helped induce labor! It's an amazing show, and I love that they are supporting EACH.

ReplyDelete"Kate things". Kate did it again. Like wearing the blue and white cloud dress to match the poster advertising that sheep movie previously. Her dress for James Bond matching the one on the poster for that movie, etc.
But at what point does this become costume like? Often, thematic dressing comes at the cost of being unfashionable.

DeleteWe are in the minority this time it seems, surfer girl. I don't like this outfit. Wish I had a good answer for why. The earrings are comical to me - too many tassels and "too fun" for this dress - jewels, Kate, JEWELS! :) I guess maybe if the shoes had been sandals and the earrings jewels I'd be better. Just something about it all doesn't sit well with me.

I love the dress, the shoes, the bag and the earrings, but never in a million years would I put them all on at the same time. It's like a desperate attempt to assemble every red thing she owns and wear it at once. Frankly, a little odd.

although I am not a great fan of that length, I think Kate wears that beautifull dress very well (except for the little sleeves which she seems to like , which are rather little girl looking ...). it is the perfect choice for an event at which some persons allow themselves to come in jeans ( Morgan Freeman, Judy Murray ....) which seems quite rude and improper, at least for the organizers, not saying for Kate !!! some blings on the clutch would have made the look perfect, also an updo so that we could see the ear rings, but then we had the surprise to see those rings nested in her hair !

Gosh how I love this dress! Feminine 1950s style. Gorgous colour. I would love to try on this dress! I agree with others that Kate's hair may have better styled differently. But oh it was a truly great dress choice for the evening.

ReplyDeleteWell, I've done a first!!! I bought her earrings in Black. I thought they'd look great with a black pant and black/white top and my hair in a long pony. I love what she's wearing, the dress is gorgeous ... and I just can't get over her make up in recent weeks, it's flawless. It was clearly not an overly fancy ocassion, given how Judy Murray was dressed. So, I think she got away with it. (Just!). The earrings are fun, youthful and very on trend. It's another big win for me ... she's quite glowing isn't she?? I do agree, I would have gone with a sandal rather than a pump due to the length of the dress. But, I'm a bit in love with it all the same. Someone mentioned, why no bra line? When you're buying clothing that's as expensive as she does, they often have the boning in the bodice and inbuilt bra's. xx

ReplyDeleteI think she looks really well from top to toe! My feeling on the earrings is that they pull the red of the dress and burgundy of the shoes and bag together and that they are a bit funky. I would never have put these colours together but now that I have seen the combination on Kate a few times, I really, really like it. I also really like her more understated make up these days. I have liked her choices very much lately, especially since Christmas.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to make an observation. The dress is not identical to the model/designer edition. Kate's sleeves are longer. I do believe it is a set in short sleeve, not a capped sleeve, where there is no seam between the bodice and the sleeve. Secondly the hem is different. It is appears to have an approx. 2 inch hem. The design model shows a rolled hem, not more than 1/2 an inch. I have noticed frequently that she will have a dress by a certain designer, but many subtle changes are made to better suit her. I read quite a few of the comments, but did not see anyone mention these small difference. One other observation I made is her "under garments". In one photo there seemed to be some white straps in the bodice, and a photo of the back shows some white show through. Is that just a poor photo? Or did she have a bit of bra show through? The last comment I was going to make - Kate dresses for her color and her shape. She looks stunning. She looks so amazingly beautiful so often. The key is not a specific color, or a specific designer - but that she is aware of her color/shape and dresses to make that work. As stunning as her clothes are, they would likely look much worse on others. I find that so interesting. I think too, she looks beautiful because she is happy. She has a lovely radiance about her. I find her a happy contented person, and that shows through. It's not an artificial beauty.
ReplyDeleteVery interesting observations, Anon 19:51! I agree that a lot of Kate's clothes which look great on her wouldn't work so well for other people. And she is certainly a proof that beauty is a combination of external AND internal factors. Even more "plain" people may look beautiful thanks to the beauty inside them, and if someone is as beautiful as Kate plus radiates inner beauty - what a gift for people around them!
DeleteZora, I hope William cherishes that in Kate and does everything that a loving and faithful husband can do to keep that spark alive and healthy in Kate. I hope he treats her right and nourishes their marriage, not sully it. She married into all that solely because of her love for William, in my opinion. If that relationship would diminish or falter, she will be like a duck out of water I think. I hope that we were not seeing the first signs of anything like that at Westminster. That definitely was unusual behavior from Kate. Not speaking anything bad over them. I just hope that her confidence in her marriage remains strong.
