The Telegraph reports "The visit is likely to be interpreted as another trip being made by a member of the Royal Family in their role as ''Brexit Ambassadors'', as they have been dubbed. Kate visited Paris in March with William in what was seen as the first in a series of European tours by the monarchy to strengthen ties with the continent." In July, the Cambridges will visit Poland and one of the leading EU nations, Germany.

'Luxembourg is only a small country, but over the decades has become a thriving financial centre after suffering the depression of its iron and steel industries.
The country's strategic place between France, Belgium and Germany, and proximity to the Netherlands, has meant it has been at the heart of territorial ambitions of a number of states for centuries.
In the mid-19th century things came to a head when a crisis developed over France's plans to buy the Grand Duchy from the Netherlands's William III, whose forebears had governed it. But when Prussia, whose garrison still occupied the fortress of Luxembourg, objected, the powers met in London. Once known as the Gibraltar of the North, its fortress was dismantled under the treaty signed on May 11 1867, the garrison withdrew and the Grand Duchy was declared perpetually neutral under the guarantee of the signatory powers.'
On arrival, Kate's first port of call was the Grand Duke Jean Museum of Modern Art (MUDAM). The Duchess was accompanied by Princess Stéphanie, Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. Her husband Prince Guillaume, has been heir apparent to the Crown of Luxembourg since his father's accession in 2000.

Very excited six-year old twins Gabriel and Charles were delighted to present The Duchess and Princess Stéphanie with a posy :)
Kate and Stéphanie were also joined by the Prime Minister Xavier Bettel.
The Duchess toured current exhibitions by British artists Sir Tony Cragg and Darren Almond.
Kate heard about iconic works of art during the tour.
Tony Cragg is an award winning British sculptor. His early work involved site-specific installations of found objects and discarded materials. From the mid-1970s through to the early 1980s he presented assemblages in primary structures as well as in colourful, representational reliefs on the floors and walls of gallery spaces. In 2001 he won the prestigious Turner Prize and was awarded a CBE for services to art in 2002. Speaking about his work, Cragg said "Sculpture is only a method of dealing with the big world. It’s only a method of looking for new forms and of formulating questions about the world we live in, about reality.’ ‘My experience in sculpture is that it is an incredibly dynamic and moving thing. There is something very immediate about reading material".
First proposed in 1989 and championed by then-Prime Minister Jacques Santer, the location of the future museum was much disputed, until it was agreed in 1997 to use Dräi Eechelen Park and connect the museum to Fort Thüngen. The building was designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect I. M. Pei, and cost $100m to build. The museum was inaugurated on 1 July 2006 by Grand Duke Jean, to whom the building is dedicated, and opened to the public the following day. As Luxembourg had no grant, the museum budget did not allow acquiring a modernist collection, instead the museum focused on contemporary art - its permanent collection includes works by 100 artists, including: Andy Warhol, Bruce Nauman, Julian Schnabel, Thomas Struth, and Daniel Buren. In its first year being open to the public, the museum had more than 115,000 visitors, which is a record attendance in Luxembourg. The architecture of the building is a work of art in itself, take a look in the video below.

Kate also attended a reception with leading young Luxembourgers in the fields of culture, education, business and the charitable sector.

In the centre of the capital, the Duchess visited Place Clairefontaine, and toured a cycling-themed festival, which celebrates the shared UK and Luxembourg passion for the sport. Kate was introduced to the Grand Duchy's most famous cycling icons.

'She was handed a posy by three-year-old Teo Schleck, the son of cyclist and former Tour de France winner Andy Schleck. Upon seeing the Duchess, who was wearing a pale blue Emilia Wickstead coat, Teo appeared a little overwhelmed, and, as the Duchess crouched down to speak to him, dived into this mother's arm for comfort. His mum Jil later said: "She asked if he was shy and said not to worry, it's totally normal at that age."
The Duchess was then introduced to Kim Kirchen, his wife Caroline and six-year-old twin sons Liam and Mike. Kirchen, a former professional road cyclist from Luxembourg, wore the yellow jersey for four stages of the 2008 Tour. After asking many questions about his career, the Duchess was presented with a jersey by the twin boys.
Mrs Kirchen said: "She said she has no excuse now not to get on a bike." Frank Schleck, also a professional cyclist and brother of Andy, said: "She asked me about the Tour de France and whether I liked it. "I said it was a love-hate relationship. "I have two daughters and she was asking if they would be cyclists too. "We talked about how they [children] really appreciate riding a bike. For kids, it's great because they can exercise and - as long as it's safe - go to school without their parents. She said their kids have bikes and that they're always excited about trying to ride."
Kate met children who are designing Tour de France jerseys, ahead of the tour coming to Luxembourg in July.
The Duchess unveiled a mural of British cyclist Tom Simpson and Luxembourgish cycling legend Charly Gaul.
Next, Kate called on Their Royal Highnesses The Grand Duke and Grand Duchess of Luxembourg at the Grand Ducal Palace.
The Grand Ducal Palace is a magnificent piece of architecture. It has quite a history too, beginning as the city hall of Luxembourg in 1572. Located in Luxembourg City, the Grand Duke performs an array of official duties there.
Kate joined join the official commemoration of the 1867 Treaty of London, which confirmed Luxembourg’s independence and neutrality, at Luxembourg City Museum.
A new collection "The Luxembourg Story" about Luxembourg's history was unveiled.
The museum shared the following information on the exhibition "The new exhibition tells the eventful history of the city of Luxembourg, from its origins in the 10th century to the present day. By following the chronology of urban development, divided into four major periods and 17 topics, the exhibition focuses on the most important and characteristic aspects of each epoch. The exhibition provides local as well as foreign audiences with a concise introduction to the history of the city, with a corresponding selection of objects, films and sound documents, photographs and multimedia applications."
There's been an active campaign promoting the exhibition around Luxembourg.
Kate, with other guests, enjoyed a short walk outside the museum to take in the stunning views of the capital on the corniche (viewing trail).
What a view! It's no surprise it's known as "Europe's most beautiful balcony".
Kate and Prince Guillaume were all smiles outside the museum.
Finally, The Duchess continued to Dräi Eechelen Museum for the main commemoration event.
Kate was given a guided tour of 'Luxembourg 1867 – Open City', the new exhibition, which explains how the dismantling of Luxembourg’s fortifications laid the foundation for the transformation of Luxembourg into an open and outward-looking city and country.
Kate viewed original copies of the Treaty and a model of Luxembourg City before the fortress’ demolition.
The museum is housed in Fort Thüngen, most of which was demolished after the 1867 Treaty apart from its foundations and three towers. Dräi Eechelen means “The Three Acorns” and refers to the acorn-shaped sculptures on each tower.
The Duchess selected a bespoke pale blue Emilia Wickstead coatdress for the day. It's a 'classic Kate' look, HRH has long favoured bespoke coatdresses for significant events, they have become something of a 'go to' option over the years. The piece bears notable similarities to other Wickstead designs such as the green coatdress Kate wore on St. Patrick's Day in 2012. Blue is one of Kate's favourite colours when it comes to her sartorial choices - it's also one of the colours of the Luxembourg flag.

HeavenLM via Twitter notes similarities between Kate's garment and the designers Foster Tuxedo Jacket. Made in Portugal and crafted in wool, it features a notch collar and full length sleeves.
Kate also chose blue for her first solo overseas trip to the Netherlands. The skirt suit was created by Catherine Walker.

They are the Kiki McDonough Blue Topaz and Diamond Drop Earrings in White Gold (with thanks to Bertie and Royal Romance). The £3,500 pair are described as "A wonderful pair of blue topaz oval and cushion cut stones surrounded by diamonds set in 18ct white gold to form the most stunning drop earrings.". Emily Andrews suggests they may have been an anniversary present.

It was a very interesting visit encompassing several engagements which flowed along very nicely and interconnected to celebrate cultural ties and Luxembourg's fascinating history. The schedule was well handled and quite a bit of ground was covered in just four hours. It was lovely to see Kate accompanied by Princess Stéphanie and later Prince Guillaume for the majority of the day. It's always a treat to see royal families together and welcoming each other to their countries. I suspect there's a clear strategy going on with Kate's solo trips, and today felt like a 'step up' in terms of gravitas compared to last year's visit to the Netherlands. The Duchess spent a large portion of the day with the Prime Minister and delegates from other countries marking the anniversary of the Treaty of London. I would love to see Kate's next solo trip see her spend a couple of days in another country, but the "Brexit Tour" is clearly a focal point for the firm this year. It's worth noting the Queen's private secretary Christopher Geidt and longtime adviser David Manning were with the Duchess. Kate was accompanied by Rebecca Deacon today. For those asking, Rebecca is not leaving until the end of the summer. You can watch a video from the day here.

ReplyDeleteThis coat is very nice. The silouette reminds me of the dark navy beulah coat she wore when pregnant, and the ice blue colour is a favourite of hers. And I'm personally very fond of this silouette. So seems Kate. And because she like this colour much she already have hats to combine it with in the future.
I was a bit "afraid" when I saw the designer name because her quality is very... wobbly. But this one is very nice.
It's very much Kate's royal uniform. Which makes extra sense during these very official events. So while it doesn't set the fashion world on fire, she is very appropriatley dressed as a royal representing her country.

This Emilia Wickstead is one of my favourites. I was pleasantly surprised at the 'quality' of it after seeing the designer's name. The tailoring of some of her other designs hasn't impressed me in the past.
DeleteA similar look to her Netherlands visit, except that her hair is down (nice length btw). It's pretty, polished, and professional, but not overdone, as I imagine she'd want to look. Keeps the focus on the visit rather than on her wardrobe.

The coat looks like you can take it off and I almost thought she would. But for he other day away tour, she wore that one Catherine Walker the whole time and I knew she wouldn't change for this tour.

DeleteI don't think she is wearing a dress underneath this coatdress, it looks like it has substantial lining, like some of her other coatdresses. The material looks thick, too, so it might be too hot to wear something under it.
Anon 15:12, I went back and noticed what you mean--you can see the "belt" better in the photo of Catherine talking to the darling shy little boy. It almost looks like there's a hidden zipper below the waistband. I also love coat dresses. I've had a few that wrapped across the front and snapped closed with a hidden zipper from the waist down. The dress material has visual weight like a wool coat but could actually be a thick gabardine. The closure could be better sewn.

I love the fact that Duchess Catherine wears less expensive clothes like everyday women do instead of spending $$$ on all haute couture bespoke designs. Jacqueline Kennedy did the same--having Oleg Cassini fashion shifts and suits from different materials and similar to the Parisian haute couture designs she loved when she was First Lady.
Being frugal is an essential lesson everyone should learn, and I admire these women for not spending tons of money on their wardrobes for their public appearances as ambassadors for their countries.
I love reading all the style magazines and looking at the gorgeous haute couture looks being advertised. I am disturbed by the fact that almost all the clothing and accessories designers as well as the skincare and beauty companies have 'brand ambassadors' that are so young. I'd rather see actual WOMEN of all ages wearing Chanel, Dior, Louis Vuitton, and Hermes. What teen or 20 something could actually afford these clothes or accessories without going into major debt? I would especially love to see skincare and cosmetic product companies advertise their products on everyday women--I'm almost 40 and have taken very good care of my skin, but I'd be more likely to purchase products that have actually helped real women look better. The fact that Kendall Jenner uses Estee Lauder's skincare doesn't interest me--she wasn't even 20 before she started getting lip fillers. I want to see how these products help women like me prevent wrinkles or see how this mascara will give me thicker lashes without falsies.
I love Duchess Catherine's style--especially because she has found a 'uniform' that works so well for her. The coat dress style is stunning but understated, and I would want versions in different weights of material for more seasons and events. I admire that Catherine chooses different mostly British designers and pret a porter fashions that helps these designer's businesses and the economy.
For official events like this one with other heads of government, bespoke designs are most appropriate as Duchess Catherine is representing her country, while less expensive looks work perfectly for her appearances as member or head of various organizations and charities.
I also think Catherine's simple dress and hair allows Princess Sophie to shine at this event. Catherine could upstage almost everyone other woman, but her humility and approachability is the attribute of her character I love the most about her. Princess Sophie is beautiful and takes the spotlight as she rightly should. I do love Catherine's various updos, but her hair is so beautiful and simple at this event.
I can't imagine how stressful it is to have to look perfect every time she walks outside. I hate that there's so much pressure for her to stay movie star thin and have perfect hair, skin, teeth, hands and act as immaculately as she looks. Plus her actions as wife and mother are reported on and judged as harshly as her appearance and style. Duchess Catherine should be able to actually enjoy her life and not worry about having to look the same as she did as a 20 year old.
I am in a much better mood today and positivity has returned. yay. I agree with what you said M

Now I try to take into account the everyday media scrutiny, etc. and am hopefully getting more gracious in my critiques, giving Kate credit for just maintaining so brilliantly and showing up as she does. DeleteQuick post! I quite like Stéphanie's red ruffled outfit. Kate looks nice, her hair looks like it's been trimmed. I like this EW coatdress better than the one she wore in Bhutan, it looks like the green one she's worn a couple of times on St. Patrick's Day. She seems to be going for a pale blue theme with these short overseas visits, like the CW suit she wore the last time. The shade suits her.

Finally, security was extremely tight and noticeable, especially with the HGD&D.
I spotted one of Kate's faithful shadows as well. And there were three in a security detail around the vehicle I assume brought Kate. And I thought Kate looked both modestly and appropriately attired. I can't imagine HM finding fault with it. Except a brooch might have topped it off nicely. :)

ReplyDeleteStephanie is of an age with her - perhaps they will form a friendship - she is much more a working princess. She often dresses old, so I'm going to support this red coat dress, although I would have liked it a bit longer and am not convinced about the ruffles. She looks very pretty though and nice how she stood back whilst Kate went to collect flowers in one video - a good hostess.

Pale blue is a very nice colour for this kind of event. As far as I know, very few political or controversial events connected to the colour. I read once of a man that always wore a pink tie when visiting Ireland because he found that most other colours managed to link him to some kind of politics otherwise. I wonder if pastel blue might be another one of those "diplomatically safe" colours. Either way, she looks very nice in it.

DeleteI was funning a bit but I know it's always important to consider colour when visiting countries - and when multiple countries are concerned, it does take care. So perhaps this is Kate's European blue diplomacy.
DeleteOn the subject of diplomacy - I wish they had sent William and Kate - or Charles and Camilla - to Norway - nothing at all against Sophie (but where was Edward), in fact, she could have gone too, but where every other country sends kings and queens Brexit diplomacy would seem to warrant doing better - Norway is not in the union but allied to it - (and I've met Norwegians who don't want to join but say adhering to the rules means lots of burdens without benefits.) Not to discuss politics, but it would seem like it's time for the royal family to send their first strings to these events - whether it comes from the government or the royals - it looks odd to both nations.

DeleteI quite agree with you, Julia, sending a couple would definitely be more representative and would mean a lot more about keeping good relations despite the brexit . anyway I am quite happy for Catherine to be on her own, she therefore gains confidence and growing importance in the mind of other royal families and/or foreign governments. I must say I rather like seeing her beeing "in the light" than having her waiting behind William and laughing when he makes a joke ... as for the fashion, I do like this blue shade and the design of the coat or dress or whatever it is called, it suits her thin silhouette ! I just wish she could use her accessories to make a kind of contrast, i.e. a dark (burgundy, or even dark blue) clutch ..... the ear-rings are really gorgeous !
DeleteI don't think Phillips retirement would change anything. If anything, I'm pretty sure both events were planned together. William ending his contract this summer and moving to london towards the late summer/early autumn. And Phillip retireing in the autumn.

DeleteJulia, I agree with you re Sophie in Norway. I thought C & C should have gone or W & K. And where WAS Edward? Sophie is apparently a favorite of the Queen and, when you think of it, the only daughter-in-law who stayed the course. The event wouldn't have been Anne's cup of tea but W & K would have fit right in with Haakon & Mette Marie, Frederick & Mary, Victoria & Daniel. But, then, there is the problem that they are all "next in lines" and W & K aren't.
As I have said before C & C were in Kilkenny today. I heard that Camilla was at the Irish Stud yesterday. Glad I took my overseas guest there on Tuesday; we had the place to ourselves and the Japanese Garden was lovely. Haven't seen any photos of Camilla's visit there.
Charles made a speech about how England still considers Ireland important. How nice (said with tongue firmly stuck between teeth.) And then he hit a ball at a hurling demonstration and was declared a natural at hurling. He is well liked among Irish gardeners for his championing of organic gardening.
A couple of newspapers--the Irish Mirror and the Telegraph--wrote of massive crowds turning out for him. I am sure some were there for him but Kilkenny is a busy, touristy city anyway and with most of the roads closed people would have had to walk along the barriers to get into town.
I asked my Canadian friend if she'd like to go to Kilkenny to see Charles. She chose a drive along the Copper Coast and a walk on the beach instead.
I feel if C&C could not make it, then W&K should have gone. William is second in line where Sophie and Edward are down the Pecking order. But since Sophie attended, Edward should have been with her.

I enjoyed your remarks about the C & C visit - in the photos I saw there were no great crowds but the security was massive. It got little enough attention for an historic visit.
DeleteI believe I saw a photo of the duchess with ice cream - a lolly seems to be her favourite way of getting in the papers. There seemed to be a small crowd there in Dromore, possibly as much pro-British as anything. Elsewhere, there were schoolboys - a way of looking like there's attention.
I would choose a walk on the beach as well.
I was amused by a photo of Camilla sitting next to Charles at a table while his attention was focused on what he was signing. She was looking fixedly and directly into the camera. I was amused because of the contrast of that similar photo featuring William and Catherine where she was looking at William and what he was doing. Also because she was dressed in baby blue. A very safe color in Ireland.

ReplyDeleteThey have made a fuss of Charles III, given the play was around for ages - I saw it well over a year ago or more - Piggot-Smith, poor man, was out ill, so we had the understudy who was excellent.
DeleteIt was hard to imagine Charles getting so excited about freedom of the press - but I suppose they wanted a cause the public could relate to. The play was brilliantly done - in verse, like a Shakespeare history.
I'm known to be a Diana supporter but I found the use of the ghost interesting. Camilla was brilliantly done - such a hopeless yes-woman. At the time, I thought they got Harry completely wrong - but now they seem prophetic with his doubts and his dodgy romance.
Not quite sure about the writing on William and Kate - Kate was more ambitious for a prince...sly, than the Lady Macbeth they keep talking about - perhaps they've altered the film. The actress did brilliantly. William did come off as very bland - at the time, I doubted that but again, I wonder.
I didn't think of it as particularly republican - but I have to say from the talk around us, they were attending it in droves.
"Dodgy romance"--yikes! Don't you know that our gracious hostess has a new blog called Mad about Meghan? Most of us here are Meghan fans and find her eminently suitable for Harry.
DeleteDivorced (less important), actress, American, blog-writer, attention-seeking, messy family dynamic(Today possibly one of he most important aspects to royals is a solid family background) sex scenes, high-profile former boyfriends, all equal dodgy when it comes to princess applications. (And to some mixed race will too, although it shouldn't) In the play, the girl Harry becomes involved with isn't a negative character - she's just pushing royal boundaries.
DeleteMy own opinion is that Meghan may prove to be suitable but because she is controversial and has courted attention in the past, that this needs to be a union based on experience and sound judgement - not heat - especially since the heated relationships of these two in the past have not ended well.
I do not have a good feeling about a marriage between Harry and Meghan lasting either. Don't know why. But, I will enjoy keeping up with it until the end - which I truly hope never comes for them. Can't shake this bad feeling though.

DeleteBut I too am uneasy about the Harry and Meghan union. It is not good that both come from broken homes and one has already had a broken marriage. If that can be overcome I would welcome them happily. They both need to slowly tread and be very sure aside from the passion in an early relationship.
I think Megan is fabulous, albeit very media savvy. I think she will be amazing in the royal family and show them what real education, drive and intelligence can do for people.
DeleteAt the same time I have to agree with those that don't see this relationship lasting. There are many reasons why - I have elaborated on the meghan blog. I hope they do go the distance, I really do. But I have many many friends and have seen many different types of relationships and this one just doesn't seem to be the kind that makes it.

DeleteI've only read about the play but it seems that it has captured a couple of true characteristics of Charles, William, Harry, Camilla. Portraying Kate as a Lady Macbeth type is vastly off the mark but it is a useful literary device, which might be what they were going for.

I am also with those who were hoping for some other accessories, a dark navy or something other than the nude, would just bring it up a notch, give it a nice pop. and I dont know why but i just cant fall in love with that new nude clutch, maybe its the texture of the fabric? the style? I also liked stephanies red out-fit, i don't know much about her, will have to do some google!! DeleteI confess I have never been to her blog and the only bits I know about her writing or speeches were from what Charlotte posted and what Claudia and others wrote in the comments of the Meghan blog. And I thought those writings and speeches were from the heart, came from a thoughtful place and were well-written. Dare I say quite original.
Mette-Marit was quite controversial and continues to be - I've always thought of her as hard-working but have heard mixed reports from Norwegians. They were together a long time before they married.

DeleteI wasn't going to chime in on this, but I agree with you, she looks lovely and appropriate but it's all fairly boring. And it is odd to me that she basically buys the *exact* same item. Even slight alterations or tweaks could give it a different appearance and look. And again, if the whole thing was styled differently, more interesting shoes, bag etc. it would make a difference. I always think of the historic nature of royal life, how will this all seem when we look back at photos of significant events. I think she'll look *so* similar for many of them.
I love the earrings and think they add a nice regal touch (more sophisticated hair would have showcased them) but I agree, not sure why she chose that necklace with it.

Kate shops like someone who is bored with her life. Sorry - she just does. I agree on imagination or lack of it. Everyone has a style and sticks to things that suit their body. But buying the same thing in different colors on a regular basis is something that bored people do because they don't want to exert their imagination or creativity to find something even remotely different, yet feel compelled to buy buy buy. Because buying gives them amusement and fulfillment, and perhaps a feeling of control over their life.

Gems like that go for $12 in the wholesale market, according to someone who has a jewelry making business -she was telling me this weeks ago. You pay for the name because, as you can see, the design elements are *quite* basic and uniform.
Kate is into clothes. And jewelry. An example of someone who is not is Anne. So she likes to shop. She is just bored in her life - that is my (very amateur) diagnosis. She did not used to be like this. This is one of the ways that the royal life has transformed her.

DeleteI love clothes and pairing clothes. I love colour and playing with stuff. I am a very creative person. And most stuff I find that I like I buy in multiple colours. I buy very similar silouettes and pieces with differences. Because I know they look good on me and work. And I very much doubt anyone would call my dress sense stale.
I still think that the change had a specific point of origin. I think that was the day of the Royal regatta. I think William tried to "take the Mickey out" of her because she wore red and that really stood out more than the Queen's color. Plus, she was, up to that point being consistently admired for her (beautiful) sartorial choices. He apparently thought he would nip the "clothes horse" thing in the bud, for whatever reason. I have had people think this perspective is total bunk, but I do not. I have watched about every video available of that regalia and looked at just about every photo of that also. William and Kate, I think, had a little conflict that day. And since that day, Kate's outfits have not been the same. I researched that also. Matilda Blue on You Tube has a couple of video portions of the day that show William "taking the Mickey out" of Kate for something. (Oh to have a British professional lip reader to read those exchanges.) I think he was taking the oomph out of her sartorial creativity that day. Just my opinion.
DeleteThere was also a rift the time that William and Kate had lunch at a local pub prior to a polo match. They had brought Lupo along and believe it or not they asked to pub owner to watch Lupo for them at the pub during the match. William might not have been happy about that. Kate was shown very clearly (frantically) running, in a green dress and cork wedges to catch up to William. When she did, he looked surprised to see her, with a look that seemed to say, I can't believe you are here did you really run after me like that. (There was another rift in Santa Barbara.) I mention this polo thing only to indicate that, yes, they have had rifts in public, particularly during their first year or so of marriage. Thankfully they made it through every one of them to be where they are today. Kate had to give way a lot.
At least she didn't throw her shoe at him. :) I wonder that William did not see what Kate was wearing before they left home.
DeleteEarnest discussion versus angry argument. I think if you will take another look at those photos with that in mind...If Phillip and Elizabeth were arguing every time she had pouty or grumpy "I am not amused" expression, they would have been sleeping in separate bedrooms long ago.
If William was upset it is just as likely to have been focused on some other person or event, with Kate his sounding board.
Rebecca, I was careful in stating my opinion about someone who buys the same exact thing in multiple colors. Which Kate does a lot - especially about jewelry. How many of us do that about accessories - the same earrings in multiple semi-precious gems?
DeleteBuying the same silhouette or things that are very similar to each other is something all of us do - they are our preferences and suit our body and so we stick to what we know looks good. I don't think that my comment applies to you at all. I also do what you said you do, buying similar things with some differences. Nobody buys completely radically different clothes - everyone's wardrobe is cohesive in some way or other.
You say you pair clothes, which I take to mean mix and match. That to me shows creativity.
Kate does not pair clothes AT ALL. In fact she is so unimaginative that she rarely buys clothes that can be mixed and matched. She buys entire outfits with no consideration for re-wear or mix and matching. To me that shows the utmost intellectual lethargy. And intellectual lethargy is born out of two things : 1. Boredom 2. Lack of control in one's life, which leads to fear of stepping out of one's comfort zone.
Hence my hypothesis.
CP Mary is a great example of someone who knows how to use her huge budget wisely. She also knows what she looks good in and buy things with similar cut or silhouette. But she can mix and match like nobody's business. She buys things that can be reworn completely differently, each time with new flair. I love her wardrobe.
Wow surfergirl .. that seems really stretchy to me. Do you really think that William was behind the toning down and dulling down of her fashion? You may be right, but I hope not, for Kate's sake. I have no doubt that he calls the shots in the marriage - Kate herself has confirmed that. But if he does to this extent then I have to wonder. How happy is a marriage when one person's soul is crushed to please another?

She looks great and this silhouette really works for her. I much prefer this look to the one she wore in the Netherlands. It probably is very comfortable too. Tired of seeing ice blue on her but it suits her. Very nice outing for our Duchess.

I really did not like the outfit she wore to Belgium (it looked too professional try hard and went the route of a lady who goes to teas... which, okay, is what Kate is BUT) and her hair there looked too rigid. This is a bit more relaxed, which I like.
ReplyDeleteI really like Stephanie, I think she's intriguing as she hasn't had kids yet (such a detour for a high ranking royal!), is passionate about music, and seems extremely well educated and blue blooded yet sweet. I hope they do become friends. The Queens of the Netherlands and Belgium always seem to be having a great time together so maybe the future Queens of Luxembourg and England can chill too. :)
I love the silhouette of this coat dress but am not a fan of the color. Although if it's for diplomatic reasons I get it. Like her slightly shorter hair. I love the earrings but they read a bit too evening for me. Especially with the dangle part. But then the Duchess does like dangle earrings. Overall a professional look for a professional day.

I am not a dress designer but I wonder if there would be ways to tweak the look a bit to give a bit more variation to the silhouette? Maybe seaming on the flared skirt. or sleeve details? I am confused as to why you think one wearing would be reason to toss the shoes and seek out new ones. Even a royal is not that frivolous.

DeleteI really like the art Kate saw (if only from several pictures). I especially like the colourful sculptures - they are very expressive and dynamic. I love the space where they were exhibited and would love to be there for a while, it definitely adds another dimension. Modern art can be tricky and I'm a bit sad when people say they "loathe" it. Perhaps I'm wrong but to me this is a rather strong word. Taste differs and everybody is entitled to liking or disliking anything but I think it would be nicer to the others to just say "I really/strongly dislike it". It's like with fashion - we feel differently about many pieces Kate wears but mostly people just say they don't like/dislike it. "Hate" or "loathe" are a bit different words, IMO. It's like saying "I find this particular handbag disgusting". Moreover, a handbag is an object of everyday use but art is work of someone's hands and mind, the painter/sculptor spent time creating it, put their energy, feelings and skills into it... I think it would be kinder to bear this in mind. Just my opinion.
I have some amazing photos from that park, Zora, and most of them aren't of the art! Obviously I have some of those, but the setting itself is gorgeous. It is lovely park land with a lake, bridge, paths, and it's just amazing (and a nice shop and tea room!). In fact I've had two of the photos I took there as phone wallpaper it's so nice. As we were wandering around I watched a sculpting workshop with people chipping away trying to make Latin sayings!

Zora, I agree that 'loathe' is a strong word. I feel a bit bad for the artist after having a strong reaction, but I really dislike it, unfortunately. I don't think I'm very good at interpreting/appreciating contemporary art!

DeleteI think that it perfectly alright, Kiwi Gal. If you put it like this, I have no problem with it. Interpreting contemporary art is a difficult thing, many works of art are not "appealing" and some of them look really strange. No wonder a lot of people say they don't like/understand modern art. However, with a good explanation it can be different. My uncle is an artist and I find it immensely interesting when he explains to me what a particular painting/scupture means or symbolises, what he put into it, why he made it this way and not another way, why he used a particular colour or shape... It helps me to interpret and appreciate other artworks too as I try to sort of look at them through what he told me. It doesn't mean I like them all, of course.

ReplyDeleteThis is an elegant, pretty dress if somewhat predictable and underwhelming. In a sense, I feel like we've seen this before as it is similar to other pieces she has worn. That said the color is beautiful and a nice nod to the Lux flag. The material looks lovely and the opulently full skirt is beautiful. I do wish she had done something else with her hair although it does look pretty today. I have to say that I think what she wore during her Netherlands trip was more of a wow for me, creases and all.
I agree Erika. I don't dislike anything about today's outfit; I'm just left feeling that it's a bit bland compared to the Netherlands suit. That was a wow for me too (as you say, creases and all!).
DeleteIt looks like I'm very much in the minority but I'm also disappointed by the choice of the same pale blue colour for both visits. I think it's a lovely colour on her and I can understand her not wanting to wear a strong colour if these are meant to be 'soft diplomacy' missions, but I think blush pink, minty green or pale lemon would have provided a change from the Netherlands look while still looking spring-like and non-political.
Still, it's great to see Kate out and about again. Can't wait until the children's party! Hope we might get a surprise sighting of George and/or Charlotte!

I have always wished she would cut it shorter to frame her face. I did not care for the earrings at all, though, but that is minor. All in all a great look. Love this soft, full-skirted coat, a beautiful look on her, and personally I am glad to see the nude shoes - they really elongate the leg and don't distract from the movement and cut of the coat. Nude shoes are my go-to color for the same reasons. Her earrings are gorgeous too! She looks radiant and happy. Love our sweet-natured Kate!
ReplyDeleteBeing a fan of the coat dress, I like it. It works for today which has a wide range of events planned. Moveable enough to bend down to kids but structured enough to work for a ceremonial engagement. I do like the bigger earrings. The color matches well but far better is they are larger and therefore a bit out of her normal for a day engagement.
ReplyDeleteAnd man, she is flying through these engagements. I knew she had like 6 planned but figured they would be span over a full day, but not almost all in a 3 hour period!
Classic Kate event look. Nothing exceptional, nothing garish. Ice blue isn't my favorite color, but she looks professional, which is appropriate for the work. The waist is well-fitted and I like the full skirt. The material seems a bit heavy--anyone else think so? Maybe the weather is colder than it appears in photos.

They just don't go with her at all even though she looked stunning as usual. I don't know why she bought them. Sometimes I think that she buys things just because she can and has nothing better to do with her time.

I agree wholeheartedly. She is obviously a beautiful woman inside and out. Her style, though, is completely and utterly lacking. I can tell you what she'll be wearing for her next 50 events: coatdress, nude or black court pumps, Kiki McDonough earrings, and one of a handful of clutches she'll inevitably keep at her stomach. I keep thinking that, one day, I'm going to check Charlotte's blog and Kate's outfit will blow me away! That she'll really knock her fashion out of the park! Alas, it's been six years and it's just never going to happen. Once again, very disappointed to say the least. On a positive note, Luxembourg is beautiful!

DeleteI've mentioned many times before that it would be great to see less focus on Kate's clothes and more on, you know, what she actually does. But it seems most people just aren't into that.
I think it worked out well that Kate's host upstaged her. Kate's obviously the main attraction, so go subtle (but sparkly) and let another woman shine!
DeleteI agree too. I was very disappointed. To me it was absolutely a waste of money to buy this coat dress. She has so many items in blue and this particular blue does not look great on her in my opinion. Furthermore, I think the material was too warm/thick looking to wear on inside engagements in May.
DeleteI was also not impressed by her hair. Please do more updo's like in the Netherlands. It looks more sophisticated and would make her stop touching her hair, which I see pictures of in every blog.
Stephanies hair and make-up was perfection and though I do not love the ruffles on her dress, the color was very nice. I think her outfits are improving!
Sophie is quite fashionable - her style as changed a lot in five years. I don't love every outfit but she does step out.
DeleteThe queen does not but she is 91. At the age of Kate and Stephanie, she wore a lot of different type of outfits - some not too successful.
Camilla's figure limits styles for her but she has moved more towards suits of late - possibly at Julia's suggestion. (I'm not joking. I mentioned on OSS that she looked much better in suits than flowing coats - and we have gotten more! Imagine Julia influencing Camilla!)
I do think Kate looked very appropriate for a visit like this but I did like the spark she had in the early days of her marriage. But then I'm not too keen on short skirts either. It's all creating a balance.
There are so many fine young jewelers in the U.K. - many trained at St. Martin's, that it would be nice to see some variety.
Stephanie, people ARE talking about what she does. Go back a few pages - there is a lot of talk about many things. Clothes are also interesting to people and it is okay to express opinions on that. Even if they are repetitive.

I have to admit I didn't like Princes Stéphanie's dress very much but I did like her hairdo. When I saw the picture with the cyclists it reminded me of Sophie and her achievement last year. I wonder if she said to Kate: "And say hello from me to the cyclists there when you talk to them!" :)

DeleteI'm sorry to hear that Sarah and hope it is up soon. Early days are often difficult on blogs. Charlotte is beautifully established now but I recall early difficulties and we feared we might lose her. (and a sob once more for the Royal Digest - I do think interest is growing with our present posters about European royals.)

ReplyDeleteThis look is just COMPLETE perfection! One of my all time favourites to be sure! Its style and form is so appropriate for the event, formal and uncomplicated yet airy and feminine; and the color as well is very adept, not just to the season, but to the surroundings. Great styling!

ReplyDeleteIf Harry marries Meghan, I think Meghan will be happy to push the envelope a bit, wear more daring pieces, and take some fashion risks. Maybe then people will be less hard on Kate for choosing more conservative looks (though I get people can do so respectfully!). As someone who personally loves sticking with the same brands, similar color pallette, and tried-and-true silhouettes on my body type, I will always adore this look on Kate.
Hahah, I doubt that will have people back of Kate. If anything, I think it will add fuel to the critics. (As you say, ofc one can disagree and dislike respectfully).

I love this babyblue color!! And the earrings are superblingy!! She looks much more rested and relaxed than her last solo international trip where she looked exhausted from the journey and the skirt needed a steam ironing! Thank You Charlotte!XOXO

ReplyDeleteShe's not supposed to leave until the summer. I think stuff like that usually get lost in the stories I've noticed. People thought William had ended his ambulance job, when in reality they just announced that he'll stop this summer. Same with Phillip and his retirement this fall. And Rebecca and her stopping working after getting married :P
DeleteI did not see a clear picture of Rebecca. I thought I saw her at the end of the video, but her head and figure looked more like Sophie's. There was a photo of Kate sitting down with the jersey makers with someone who resembled Sophie behind. Usually Rebecca is front and center and Sophie is harder to spot. Did you see her on another site?

DeleteI mean, I get it's not as fun for us following Kate's every style move. But most people don't keep track of what Kate has worn, and especially not where. They would not know if this was new or a repeat. What most people see is that she looked pretty (although maybe not to their style) and maybe that she matched their flag.

I'd like to say how proud I am of the GDH Stephanie. Even next to Kate, one can see that she is the best prepared princess in Europe. She has an impeccable biography and it tells!
Not necessarily true Rebecca. People may not notice it themselves, but it will absolutely be pointed out to them in commentary and reporting, especially on social media, fashion blogs, and their local press. People from Luxembourg read this blog too :) And follow royal reporters, etc etc. And local press will absolutely contain a fashion reference, even comparison.
DeleteWhen she arrived in Paris I don't think there was a single early report that didn't mention "Kate arrives wearing St. Patrick's Day coat" somewhere, and usually quite high up in the story. What Kate wears is still the most talked about factor of any of her appearances, frankly because she still isn't giving a lot more to talk about. So when it's new and spectacular that gets a lot of excitement, when it's a standard ho-hum repeat or "uniform" that's pointed out as well.
I don't think this is a big deal :) but I do think Mary has a point. People will have a first impression, but will get more info from what they read about the trip, and her fashion choices will absolutely be pointed out in that coverage.
You have every reason to be proud of Stephanie, Natacha, she behaved so gracefully - I noticed several times how she let Kate move forward.
DeleteThis seemed like a nice day. I was shocked waking up in NYC at 7am and seeing that she still hadn't appeared (noon in UK). Is that the best she could do for a day visit? Trying not to be negative but to echo others it was very short and wasn't really a day trip. More like an afternoon.
ReplyDeleteOn the fashion note...the coatdress is nice. Men wear suits every day and we don't criticize why they are wearing the same style suit, so I guess in fairness she can wear the same style/color coatdress as often as she likes. I agree with another commenter above who said a brooch would have been nice, as EW seems to be pretty plain in terms of design. I'd have loved her to put her hair half-up (a la the first Cananda tour).
I wonder if the Party at the Palace will be casual in terms of attire, or if she will dress up. I echo others who wouldn't oppose a George/Charlotte appearance at the party, but I highly doubt it.
She had to get there first, Nina. An overnight stay the night before would have allowed more time, but the increase in expense with the amount of security, for one thing, as well as housing and feeding the entire entourage over night would have prompted screaming headlines in the tabloid. Also, there may have been meetings, luncheon with TRHs prior to the engagements.

ReplyDeleteOthers have mentioned security and I went back to the post and took a look at some of the clips and photos. It did seem to be very noticeable, I would hate that part of the "Royal" job, being more on edge so much of the time in public. Because of safety concerns and the sense of the being watched by the media so much the need for finding a way to separate ones private self from the public and to be able to detach from personal safety concerns must take some real care. For me I would have to develop some real strategies to deal with those issues to keep my anxiety and sense of self strong over the years of being in the public so much.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE those new dazzling topaz earrings! I only wish she had worn her hair half-back so I could see them better! It looks like she had quite a bit of hair cut from the time we saw her at the farm because I was noting how long her hair was. I LOVE that light blue color on her. At first when I saw the coat, I thought "-meh" but then when I saw the picture of her walking down the staircase, I thought, "You know, that coat is very pretty and is quite elegant when you see the full picture" I don't know if I see so many close-ups of her that sometimes the coats start to blend one into the other. Beautiful as she always is though!

ReplyDeleteCharlotte, that was a very impressive post & visit. To be honest, I didn't know much about Luxembourg till now, the history is fascinating. It was such a well orchestrated visit, Stéphanie and her husband were very welcoming hosts. As you said, this visit was definitely a 'step up' from her solo trip last year. She exuded confidence in her role :) I, too, wish to see more visits like this in the future, similar to the one planned in Malta that she missed.

When I was a girl I had a blue coat dress much like the one Kate had on today. I loved that dress. Although they looked like coats they were really only dresses and we wore the requisite undergarments. Does anyone have an answer as to whether Kate wears another dress under her coat dress? Thank you.
ReplyDeleteI think it depends. We've seen some short dresses under at times, at times it looks like she might not. So I think it varies.
DeleteI agree this dress/coat is quite dull. I think I even would have preferred to see Kate wear the pantsuit version...in a more fitted silhouette though of course.
ReplyDeleteBODYGUARDS: Did anyone else notice there were more bodyguards than usual, they moved right on Kate's heels the entire time (unusual, they usually keep more distance), how they were much more on high-alert and looking around than usual ... I wonder if there was a threat? Reminds us of the behind the scenes issues The Dutchess must deal with to carry out her duties, not an easy task.

ReplyDeleteThis visit was interesting and I am liking the Brexit Ambassador type events she is segue-ing into. She was bright and engaging and genuinely interested. Beautiful group photo of them all. She dressed appropriately (except heels too high) but otherwise to protocol and it was suitable for the events (unlike the recent farm excursion).
ReplyDeleteI am looking forward to the upswing of quality and quantity of work for her this year. Moving back to London might be stressful but hopefully end up being an enjoyable transition, especially knowing they aren't losing Anmer completely.

I think a few people may have mentioned it in the blog about Prince Philip? Anyway, I wondered whether his accompanying Kate to Luxembourg was an effort to get some influence with Kate and, through her, with William? If he likes his position, he has got to know that he needs to be seen as a trusted adviser or he will be out the door when Charles becomes king. His previous attempt at bringing all the Royal PR offices under one roof did not work out very well (this according to the Mail so may not be true.)
Or maybe I am reading way too much into this.
I don't think that is the case. I'm pretty sure he has been with them on other trips (could it have been India?) and such. I think he and some diplomats accompanies one some of the more diplomatically heavy trips? SOmeone else might know more.
DeleteI think he will be gone when Charles ascends no matter what he does. He's going to bring his people in. Same with William when it's his turn. Besides after working with the longest reigning monarch in British history, there's really nowhere to go!

I checked another video and sure enough, there was Rebecca, adjusting her hair and standing behind Kate, large bag draped over her shoulder. Also, seen taking some flowers from Kate. I had thought I had seen Sophie in the background with someone I did not recognize. I thought it was one of William's aides, but it could have been Sir C.
She had her full staff with her in Bhutan and likely did for this reportedly significant visit. I always thought with the increasingly important nature of her engagements that she should have both someone to act as a lady in waiting to assist with flowers and such, as well as another aide to assist with the more technical functions.
Obviously, Kate was in her element and she and the Luxembourgian royalty and prime minister seemed to get along well.
She's a natural, I think.
That is not how things work. I think that you will be shocked to find out that the Queen does not "apologize" and definitely not to her grandchildren. And what is there to apologize about ? She laid down her ground rules for being in the monarchy, whether or not we agree with them or like them or think they are old fashioned. Why on earth would she "apologize".
DeleteCG has accompanied her to other individual tours as well. This is not the first time. He is there to help with the diplomatic side of things. I am pretty sure he was with them in India and Bhutan as well.
I know that we have a tendency to think that the royal family revolves around William and Kate, but it really does not. They are a small part of a pretty big organization and are treated as such. They are given guidance, but no, the monarch is not going to "apologize" to them.
I agree, Marie. Kate's one in a million. And, watching the video, I like the earrings again after all. The whole outfit works. She is gracious and lovely. Glad it wasn't me touring some of those exhibits. I would totally break decorum with nervous laughter and giggles at the exhibits that I didn't like, particularly ones that are borderline silly to begin with. And the Queen sighs and says, "Oh, I am SO glad we didn't send Surfer Girl. Can you imagine???" lol
ReplyDeleteAs I am very busy those days I cannot go back to check who said what but I have two answers for somebody: the difference between modernist and contemporary art is that the modernism belongs to the beginning of XXth century, contemporary art is nowadays. The pale blue of the outfits in European solo trips is, I think, a nice and soft homage to Europe, a way to say: we are still European, although in a light way!
