Seeing Kate at Wimbledon is always an enjoyable fixture on the royal calendar. Today's visit had additional significance - marking her first visit to the championships as patron of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC). In December, it was announced the Queen had passed the patronage on to Kate. It's a splendid fit for the Duchess who is an avid fan and a keen amateur player.
Kate met current and former players. Below, Kate meets Austrian tennis player Dominic Thiem. Kate asked Dominic how the practice sessions were going and when she found out his first match is tomorrow, not today, she said "That's why you're so relaxed". When asked if she plays tennis, Kate replied "Yes, but not to any standard".

The Duchess meets ball boys and ball girls before they took up their positions on court.
Kate told two ball girls and a ball boy she met: "Your work makes the game happen. It makes such a difference to the players, your professionalism,” adding: “You look so smart."
The ball boys and ball girls are recruited from local schools and spend weeks training ahead of the tournament. Reports noted Kate was particularly interested in hearing more about their roles.

The Duchess met staff and volunteers before matches commenced.
Kate met with the medical and safety teams who play a key role at Wimbledon every year.
Kate's role as patron offers a host of new opportunities. Kate was invited to nominate a charity to be involved in the pre-match coin toss at the Gentlemen’s Singles Final. Kate chose her patronage Place2Be, a children’s mental health charity that provides emotional & therapeutic services in schools across the UK. The organisation chose Luca to take part in the Centre Court ceremony a week from Sunday. Kate said she's thrilled for Luca "to step out onto Centre Court & showcase the excellent work of Place2Be on the world stage. As Patron of both Place2Be and Wimbledon, this is a unique opportunity to bring together two wonderful organisations.

Kate takes her seat in the Royal Box beside AELTC chairman Philip Brook.
The Duchess was greeted with a kiss from The Duke of Kent - he has been President of Wimbledon since 1969 and presents the winners' trophies to the champions at the end of the tournament.
The two share a great love of Wimbledon and I'm sure will have had conversations as Kate officially begins her role as patron. They are also 'neighbours' with the Duke and Duchess of Kent residing at Kensington Palace.
The Duchess looked a tad...surprised when Philip Brook handed her something. This one begs a caption contest :)

Kate watched world number one Andy Murray complete against Alexander Bublik in the first round of the championships. Also seated in the Royal Box were actor Dominic Cooper, writer Bill Bryson and Andy Murray’s father, William.
In the video below, Andy and Alexander enjoyed some friendly banter ahead of the match. It's an incredibly exciting time for Andy, it was announced over the weekend his wife Kim is expecting their second baby.
A delighted Kate applauded Andy as he sailed through the first round in three sets.

18 July - Day two begins with a trip to the former Nazi Germany Concentration Camp, Stutthof. Stutthof was the first camp set up outside German borders, in September 1939, and one of the last camps liberated by the Allies, in May 1945. 110,000 people – men, women and children – from 28 countries were imprisoned in Stutthof, of whom as many as 65,000, including 28,000 Jews, died. During their visit, William and Kate will meet a group of five former prisoners of the camp.

During the seventeenth century there was a large English-speaking community based in Gdansk, which made the city an important destination for travelling English players. The Shakespeare Theatre opened in 2014, and is home to the city’s annual Shakespeare festival, attended by theatre-lovers from around the world. They will attend a small reception for Poles from world of arts and culture.
Their time in Gdansk will end with a trip to the European Solidarity Centre, in Gdansk’s shipyards, the birth-place of the Solidarity movement in Poland. The Duke and Duchess will tour the museum there, and meet with founding members of Solidarity. For the second portion of the post we're switching gears and turning our attention to the upcoming Germany/Poland tour which takes place 17-21 July. Kensington Palace released the itinerary this morning along with the very unexpected news William and Kate have decided to bring George and Charlotte. A Kensington Palace spokesman said: "The Duke and Duchess are very much looking forward to this tour and are delighted with the exciting and varied programme that has been put together for it. They have decided that their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte, will travel with them and we expect the children to be seen on at least a couple of occasions over the course of the week." This is wonderful news, it will be an added bonus to see the little Prince and Princess there. The children joined their parents in Canada last September, it had been reported we wouldn't see them on another tour for "several years". It's an excellent opportunity to bring them before George starts school in September and scheduling becomes more problematic.

'The Duke and Duchess are very much looking forward to this tour and are delighted with the exciting and varied programme that has been put together for it. They look forward to a busy and impactful tour and are grateful that they will have the opportunity to meet the Polish and German people – such important friends of the United Kingdom – as a family.
As with previous tours, Their Royal Highnesses have asked that this tour allow them opportunities to meet a wide variety of people in both countries. In addition to meeting leaders in business, government and civil society, The Duke and Duchess will prioritise opportunities to meet the young people of both countries; from entrepreneurs, to mental health campaigners, and bright young talents in music and the arts.
The tour will also take in the stunning scenery and architectural feats of Poland and Germany. The Duke and Duchess will wander through the beautiful market of Gdansk flanked by terracotta houses and cobbled pathways; they will take part in a rowing race on the Neckar River; and they will tour the spectacular Elbphilharmonie Concert hall in Hamburg.
The five day tour will also include time acknowledging the complex 20th century histories of each country with visits to the Warsaw Rising Museum, Stutthof Concentration Camp, and the Berlin Holocaust Memorial. At each location Their Royal Highnesses will meet survivors of these periods, who will describe their personal experiences.'
17 July - The tour kicks off on Monday 17 July with the Cambridges arriving in Warsaw at midday.
They will be greeted by President Duda and the First Lady at the Presidential Palace, who will officially welcome them to Poland.
They will travel to the Warsaw Rising Museum, which is dedicated to the uprising of 1944 which saw the Polish resistance Home Army attempt to liberate Warsaw from German occupation.
'Their Royal Highnesses will next visit the Heart in the Warsaw Spire building, joining young Polish entrepreneurs. The Duke and Duchess will join a busy, bustling event which includes a tech market-place, and pitching sessions from Polish start-ups. It's a nicely planned tour encompassing a varied mix of engagements. From architectural highlights, sites of historical significance, a focus on the arts and culture, young people, meeting officials and of course celebrating Britain's links between both European countries, it's going to be a hectic week as the royals continue their Brexit soft diplomacy European visits. Kate looks GREAT today! So summer fresh! I am always a sucker for polka dots so this look speaks to me very much, as does the silouette with the flowy skirt and square neckline. That square neckline is perfect! And her purse. And shoes! And that fresh haircut. Much better short hair than last time! She looks absolutely splendid! She's on a roll! Looking forward to seeing all her sports faces.
ReplyDeleteGreat getting more details of the tour. I must say, I'm selfishly happy that the kids are going! It seems like a well balanced tour with alot of heavy elements but also quite a bit of fun. And since the kids seems to be a last minute addition the scheduel is still fairly tight. A nice balance of the family getting to be more together but still a "full" schedule. So win win for us and the kiddos get's to be put to bed by mum and dad most nights! And people always complain we don't see the kids enough so this will be great! Last chance before George starts school as well.
On last nights interview: Nice to see Kate doing another interview :) You can really tell she's getting more comfortable and it's great for her to get in some more training with a subject she's so familiar with. Her interview fitted nicely in with the rest of the program and it's semi-cronological format. I am not a sports follower in general but I do see the importance of sports for the general moral and to have people to look up to that fight and fight for what they strive for and celebrate and mourn together. It's a very beautiful thing and this program highlighted that.

DeleteThe hair looks great! I always felt that having extra long hair does absolutely nothing for a woman. It's just dead weight and drags down on the whole head of hair. With a shorter length, the hair has bounce and movement.
DeleteI don't like it short cos it's never done properly. If she's going shoulder length I think it needs to be straighter and sleeker like CP Mary. The big beauty queen curls are a bit bizarre to me, like she's doing a guest spot on Mad Men. Her old hairdresser (Ward?) must cry when he sees this.

DeleteShe looks much younger and fresh with this haircut. I know this will cause an uproar, but I thought her hair was too long and showed insecurity. A mature 35-yeayold woman does not need to look like a teenager or twenty-something. This to me shows confidence and no need from approval from anyone. More than Slightly different!
DeleteAnd the dress is an excellent choice for this event. By my book, Kate was today mature, comfortable and responsible for her duties. Better than I have seen before. Even compared to events for children and charities. I believe this role will take her a long way down the path of being herself in a royal capacity, beyond being William's wife or the children's mom.

Going the same route as most people her age shows confidence and no need for approval? I don't agree. That doesn't mean that she can't have this look nor that she doesn't look good. She does. But so does she with long hair. My mum is 50ish with longish hair, my dance teacher I had was nearing 60 with waistlong hair. And I can with absolute certainty say they were NOT insecure.

DeleteWell, "Soccer moms" (in the stereotypical way) are the pretty stay at home moms that drive to soccer games and bakes for the PTA meetings, so it's not a putdown. But it's not a very "glamorous look" in my mind. It is the standard "I have kids and school runs to do and I like my hair rather long but this is more practical" kind of hair. Nothing wrong with it, but it reads soccer mum. That's all. Nothing wrong with that. We all have associations with looks. And it fits, Kate IS that young mother. But I peronally like her hair a bit longer. But she still looks stunning in this hair.
DeleteI loved the first haircut she had unlike some others here because it had a very easy wash and go look to it - so often Kate's hair has had that huge American 'beauty queen' look to it in recent years. (I liked how she wore it long and straight early in her marriage.) But I think this is an excellent start to a shorter style that's both professional and youthful.

DeleteMaybe yummy mummy is the term we're looking for - something we don't see often with Kate. It's a term that is overused but fits here. We've so often seen Kate dress either 'old' or so girlish that it looks like she's attempting to recapture her uni days. It's just nice to see her dress what she is - a thirty-five year old mum of two.

Yes, Laura & Rebecca, I suppose it depends on where you live. Most moms in the Boston area, where the overall look is natural, minimal make-up, dressed down and where the focus is more on a women's brains than on her looks, run around in jeans with their hair up in pony tails also!

Waw it's all about perfection. BUT, I hope she doesn't turn back to her horrible frange of 2015�� (plz don't do that kate �� haha)

The dress was $2995. It is now on sale for $1557. I like the flow of the dress. I don't like the shoulders and the width/design of the sleeves. It looks boxy and baggy. Those take away from the streamline and feminine style of the rest of the dress, in my opinion. Kate seems to have worn the same style shoes as the model. A new style for her, just what we were wanting.
ReplyDeleteRebecca Deacon is with Kate today at Wimbledon. I am hoping she has reconsidered and will maintain her position as Kate's assistant.
Hopefully, Meghan (and Harry) will show up at Wimbledon. I didn't think she would show up today as not to overshadow Kate's first day there. She and Harry have surely been off the radar so far during her visit this time.
That's it, surfer girl! I couldn't put my finger on what else I didn't like about this dress...the top half! It just looks like it should be part of a sheath dress. But the skirt is really lovely & flowy. I hope to see Harry & Meghan this event, too, miss seeing them together.

DeleteI agree about the top half of the dress. I actually find there are two different Kates here; her bottom half is airy, summery, and feminine while her top half is matronly and dated. The fit and style of the dress, the earrings, hair cut/style... they don't work well together for me.
DeleteI'm always very happy when the Duchess cuts her hair and/or does an updo. She looks much more sophisticated. Not a fan of the dress though, even though she is wearing is okay.

I agree completely - I think it makes her look younger rather than girlish. There is a difference - a freshness and vibe to looking 'younger'.

Maybe a different style could have compliment better the new length.
I have to say I'm not sure I would be happy to see Meghan at Wimbledon especially today, this is Kate's moment as a new patron and I think she deserves all the support.
The Duchess has worn so many pieces with an high price tag, even in the past, so I don't get why we should critic her for this kind of choices.
Kate looks fantastic! The dress is great. I much prefer the square neckline Kate has over the original. Her haircut looks great. Overall she just seems more relaxed and also more confident. Both the ensemble and the confidence look great on her.

DeleteVisually I prefer the square neckline. But having corners vs. the rounded neckline, is causing the dress to buckle a bit at the corners, noticeably in the photo where she's seated. The rounded neckline would look smoother.

DeletePam, I scrolled up to see what you were referring to. Do you think it's the neckline style that is creating the "buckle"? It looks to me that perhaps Kate raised her arm(s) and pull the dress up. It just needs to be yanked back down - who knows.

ReplyDeleteI agree, that Kate looks very confident & happy at this appearance...& her hair looks better here than her first attempt at a shorter cut. But I'm not in love with this look...I normally love polka dots, just not this time. I think the dots may be a bit too large & close together. & I'm actually missing her longer hair! It looked so beautiful at her last engagement. I am loving the shoes, though! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm missing her longer hair too and it did look great at the V&A. Basically, this is my haircut, so I'm not going to be that impressed. I think the dress is nice but it is certainly not a showstopper, and at this price you would think that they could match up the seams. I do love the sandals but would have wished for some gorgeous polish on her toes. Love the bag but think the earrings are " older woman". A bracelet or even her watch would have been lovely with these sleeves. So not a win but not a miss for me. Happy to see her though. She looks thrilled to be there. Even more excited about the upcoming tour...!

ReplyDeleteShe looks happy. Every player at Wimbleton is fulfilling a dream even if they are eliminated in the first round. I think of all the family and friends that have watched thousands and thousands of games over the years for the players to reach this point.

DeleteThey are super cute! I also think it's a smart move for two reasons. The more the kids are exposed to large crowds, the more comfortable they are and their personalities emerge more(which means people love them more). The kids are now old enough to be able to understand what is happening and not to be quite as overwhelmed. Plus, these types of tours will be their jobs someday (assuming the monarchy remains). Good to start them young so it's 'normal' to them.

I like the shorter length, but the styling today was off. I imagine her hairdresser just doesn't have as much experience working with a medium length. The curls can't be so robust and need to be more wave-like. But they'll get the hang of it! I'm excited to see other styles with this length as well.
ReplyDeleteOn to something a bit more....delicate. Please, if you respond, be tasteful and sensitive because I am not trying to start a big nasty debate it is just something I have noticed. So in the past month or two I've been surprised at how many new items Kate has debuted (and how little she has repeated). And I think it goes a little deeper than just fashion. I've noticed her body shape has changed (for the better in my opinion). Her clothes have been less tight as well, an indication to me that she is purposefully buying clothes that have a bit more room in them rather than some of the really tight-fitting items we've seen in the past. I really noticed it at Trooping and at the 1851 event when she wore the trousers. She has put on weight and in my opinion she looks fabulous. I think she looks much healthier. Her arms and legs are fuller and her waist is still small but I imagine she is not fitting into some of those 2011/2012 items - which is not a bad thing at all. I just think she looks very healthy now!
Okay I have tried to be sensitive and not judge-y, most of us here are women so we should all be sensitive to the fact that our bodies change as we age, and that all sizes and shapes are beautiful!

ReplyDeleteEveryone's hair looks a bit humidified today judging from the video of her arrival. I don't know if it is a great cut--looks like it's been done in layers but the layers somehow look "off" to me, like the proportion is wrong. But the next engagement might tell the tale. She certainly looks younger with the shorter hair.

DeleteI think I prefer the clutch at engagements. All I can picture with this bag(which I do love) is the awkward shifting it around to greet people and pick up flowers, etc and it just being clunky and in the way. Carrying it to her seat though makes total sense. Like Sharyn said above, I picture her phone, some money and then a water bottle and some goldfish snacks or a granola bar stashed away.

The polka dots are unmistakable at any distance and instantly reminded me of Diana. Perhaps that was Kate's intent, given the current brouhaha over the Camilla book? I like seeing the Duke of Kent greet Kate in royal style, visibly welcoming her to her role at Wimbledon.
ReplyDeleteAs soon as I left for the kitchen to prepare for Independence Day guests, I realized that Kate was continuing the spirit of the memorial service for Diana. She was in black and white (and so was Rebecca) as well as Dianaesque 'spots.' Kate also continued wearing two colors, black shoes and sunglasses and white bag, in her accessories.
DeleteMention of the holiday reminds me to wish everyone a belated Happy Canada Day and an early Happy Fourth! I was fortunate enough last year to see the parliament building on PEI where Confederation began. The guides were already very excited about its 150th anniversary. Such a lovely town.

DeleteSo I have to admit...I rarely wear polk dots. In fact at one point in my life they were actually on my "fashion don't" list. Just did not like them. But I have changed my tune over the years and now don't mind them In fact, I find they can be very fun, light and perfect for summer. Perfect for Wimbledon!
ReplyDeleteI agree that the square neckline is better. Seems a bit more "dressy" than a scoop neck and so was a good move for an outfit that Catherine is wearing in an"official" capacity. Love the shoes and the bag. For a day event I prefer the tote to a clutch.
I know there is likely to be much debate about the print of the skirt not lining up with the print on the bodice. But I am pretty sure that was intentional. The skirt is made of multiple panels...with the print on each panel also NOT lining up. I think it is intended to be part of the "design". I understand if some people don't like that....personally I do. I think it adds a whimsical touch to the dress...
In terms of the shorter hair...I think it is a hard one. Catherine's hair is her Trademark. So to change it is tough...alot of people are not going to be happy. I personally love her long hair...but as Anett said...a change is always good and this seems just right for summer. And it is just hair and it will grow back...so I am good with this. Hope everyone's summer is off to a great start.
If I designed this dress, I would have put a very slim black belt or a narrow black ribbon along the waistline to blur where the top of the dress doesn't match the skirt.

DeleteOh that her toenails had been painted, even if just a neutral tan color. I can see why she doesn't paint her fingernails. Upper CEO positions often don't unless just a more matte clear coat. But if they go to cororporate events in open toe shoes they do wear polish on their toenails then, from my experiencial observations anyway.

ReplyDeleteThis is much more successful than the last in-between short and long style she tried previously. I like this. The curls need to be handled differently. And I even think she could take a couple more inches off if she wanted, which is quite a thing for me to say, considering I've always adored her super long curls. It's nice to see her embracing new looks. This dress is so cute. I love her version of the neckline and the print is perfect for summer. I do think she's almost erring on the side of soccer mom, as Rebecca said previously, but I can't to see how she styles this cut in the future.

Kate looks lovely but I would be surprised if this looks is anyone's "favorite" of the year. She's worn polka dots - several times, including the Top Shop dress that Jo mentioned. And I agree with Kiwi Girl, the dots are very large. The cut and tailoring of the dress looks magnificent and I would imagine the fabric blend ensures Kate was comfortable all day.

There is a mixture of comments about her hair. I'm on the side of 'not a great cut.' I have hair similar to Kate's, wavy, thick, and at time too long (like now). The best shorter hair cut I've gotten is when there are layers. Would like to see it natural at some point.
Great event - glad Kate was there for the opening - I'm sure she's in 7th heaven meeting tennis stars from the past as well as current.
Funny, I have been thinking this will most likely be my favorite of the year! Love everything - dress, hair, shoes, and how radiant Kate looks!

Once again, here we are with the "Great Kate Debate". In one corner, "Team Long Hair" vs "Team Shorter Hair" in the other. Both teams emphatically and strongly defend their positions as if either view is a permanent state of affairs. What either team fail to realize is that Kate, who looks fresh and happy in a new Summer frock, sexy sandals, and a new shorter haircut, is fortunate to have a head full of thick, healthy hair which can be worn at different lengths. So what if she chooses to trim off a few inches for the Summer. It gives her a fresh look with more bounch. But what many choose to overlook is that healthy mane of hair will grow several inches a month so that by Fall it will be right back to the length it was before she trimmed it. So "Team Long Hair", there's no need to get all discombobulated because The Duchess chose to trim her hair for the Summer! Over the years many posters have strongly urged her to change up her look from time to time. So why are so many now quick to critize when she does just that? Get a grip, people!

DeleteI'm looking forward to the German component of the tour. I was lucky enough to have spent some time in Germany as a student..and was able to see the Brandenburg Gate and tour parts of East Berlin before the wall went down. Interesting to observe such noticeable differences in the "atmosphere" when going between East and West Berlin back then. One of the most indelible memories I have of that time was seeing a lone, elderly man pacing along the Western side of the wall, waving a closed umbrella, yelling and crying out to everyone going by. We were told by our guide that he was there every day, ranting and raving about family members on the other side the wall. I'm glad the Cambridges' tour will remember this division of the country and the Holocaust as well.

LOVE this look! The dress is cute, the shorter hair has more bounce and frames her face better, and best of all, the strappy sandals make her look hipper. I was actually going to scream if she went to Wimbledon in those suede stilettos again. It so doesn't fit the vibe of a fun day of watching tennis. So these strappy sandals are a huge win for me.
ReplyDeleteI am not a fan of the dress or hair. Both OK. I do not mind that length hair, just not sure it is the best cut or maybe the part is too far over. Love the shoes and purse, do not like the earings. Not sure why the dress does not quite work. Maybe too long with all those big dots or the design of the top or fit of the top. She looked relaxed and like she was enjoying the tennis, good for her.

Great look for a summer day at Wimbledon, although I'm still astonished Kate is not just continuing to debut new item after new item this summer during mostly very light engagements, but new items from very high end expensive designers. But she looks good. Thrilled she cut her hair, although I'm not sure today it looks all that great.
ReplyDeleteNow that she is patron of Wimbledon, I really hope she starts showing more support to women's tennis. She's been to only one womens match since becoming a duchess. And this isn't her fault, but tennis is one of the most sexist sports. Wimbledon is run to perpetuate this, and television coverage is also highly sexist as well. Even Kate's bit in the new BBC documentary is mostly about male tennis players. How I would have loved for her to mention serena's greatness...especially given that she just somewhat recently broke the record for most Grand Slam titles in the open Era. Kate doesn't have to go out of her way and call Wimbledon and tennis sexist- I understand how that would be perhaps too controversial - but just making a point to attend more women's matches and also talking about some of the world class female tennis players would still do wonders.
Kate was at a womens match today. After the Murray game she stayed on Center Court for a ladies game as well.

Though I don't want her to delve into the sexism of it all (I don't think that would be smart) I do wish she had given the same, if not more emphasis on some of the female players, and not the more girlish oohing and aahing over male players. Would have been nicer for her to give some comments on the incredibly talented women dominating the field, so the headlines could have been more than Carole's tennis crush. But, in a way, it's not really that surprising to me anymore. Also, I agree I would like to see her at more of the women's matches.

I'm not doubting you at all - just...KP tweeted about a lot of things about her Wimbledon trip including specifically watching the first men's match, but said nothing about staying for the women's match as far as I can tell...so I guess I shall revise my wish to hoping that Kate not only shows more attention to women's tennis but also that when she does, KP showcases it :) or maybe I'm wrong about their Twitter - I only briefly scanned before posting originally (I wanted to see if Kate did attend a women's match today before my original post and figured this would be the fastest way to do so) so I apologize if that's true!
DeleteThe other question is whether the BBC chose to focus on Kate's comments on the men. Obviously they would have edited the interview. Being in the U.S., I haven't seen the program yet, but I was stunned that the previews for it never mentioned or showed either Venus or Serena Williams. Venus is arguably one of the greatest grass players of her generation. She has five Wimbledon singles titles, one of only four women to accomplish this in the Open Era. Yet Kim Clijsters (whom I love) was featured and has never won a Wimbledon singles championship. (She has won a doubles title, but then Venus has six of those.)
DeleteWhether the intent is there or not, it creates the impression of racism, as well as sexism (the previews showed several current men's stars, but no active women's stars that I could identify), and one would think a television network would be uber aware of image--the whole industry is based on the power of image.
In contrast, one of the images from last year's Wimbledon was of Serena taking a selfie of herself with Kate and Sophie Wessex after her semifinal victory, which Kate attended. Kate also spoke with Oracene Price, mother of the Williams sisters, before the semifinal matches. Venus was playing in the other match. I think Kate is quite supportive of women's tennis, but her actions for women don't get the same coverage as the times when she is with the men. Yet the BBC previews seemed to ignore the existence of active women players. Perhaps they simply think face time with Andy Murray will draw more viewers than time with Venus or Serena, but I really wonder what message they intended to send.
Also I'm not too thrilled about the kids coming on tour - really hope it doesn't impact the schedule and attention paid on tour as it seemed to do during the Canada trip. That being said, I'm excited to see the kids as we have barely gotten to do the entire year so far. Although it's interesting that they are so protective of the kids privacy as a reason for not bringing them on engagements in general, but when it means they can bring them on tour for their own private motives, they are suddenly willing to sacrifice privacy and let the kids be seen upon arrival and leaving. I'd much rather see them in the UK.

DeleteI am wondering what public events the children might go to in W & K's tour. Looking at the itinerary I could only see an opportunity to see them arriving and departing and perhaps the boat ride. The rest of the events don't look kid friendly to me. It's interesting that they are bringing them with them. When I travelled on business I sadly had to leave my daughter behind on virtually all of my trips. Thankfully I had friends who were willing to look after her. If I had had a husband and/or a nanny, though, I might have brought her because I did miss her tremendously. I remember catching a red eye from Vancouver to Toronto so I could make it back in time for her primary school graduation. I think I snoozed in the car as she attended a post-graduation party :)
DeleteI like the way that W & K are parenting. Take the kids with you if you can. I personally thought that W & K did a great job on their Canada trip and the kids added a great big dollop of extra magic. We could speculate on why they decided last minute to bring them. Could be that George is going through some kind of "separation anxiety" as school looms. Having the children nearby, I think, will actually help them focus on the task at hand, knowing it will only be a few hours before there can be a story and a cuddle. Again, I remember talking to my daughter on the phone at night in a hotel room, hanging up and bursting into tears. And then getting up the next day and doing what I had to do.
Private motives? As *parents*, I'm sure they'd like nothing more than to keep them at home and on a normal schedule. This, or any tour, is about introducing the Cambridge's abroad *as a family*.

The polkadots don't look as pronounced in the video either. And I don't think, after seeing the video, that it needs a belt after all. So glad I saw the video. Even the white tote purse looks in better proportion to the outfit in the video.

I was so, so happy to see her as one of Kate's primary PPO's today. I don't recall her name. (Emma?) We haven't seen her for awhile, have we? There was motorcycle security detail accompanying her vehicle today in addition the the rear guard SUV security.
So nice that Kate has this patronage that she so obviously is thrilled to have. It can be her "happy place" like Ascot is to the Queen, and Polo to the boys (and their futbol patronages also), as someone has mentioned previously. A more light-hearted one to help balance the more somber ones.
Charlotte, thank you for such a superlative and very thorough page. Thank you for the tour itinerary and travel log. What an excellent historical diary that is at the ready for Kate and her family.

Just that I would have preferred two separate posts for these equally important topics, as I fear now the tour details will go a little unnoticed after all the excitement about Kate's new haircut... (Which I love by the way! It's exactly the way I have my hair cut and my natural hair color is Kate's shade anyway :)) She was picture perfect today - loved everything head to toes.
ReplyDeleteWhat a great surprise they will bring George and Charlotte on tour! :) I'm so sad I won't be able to see them in Gdańsk, as it's where my parents are from and where my family still lives, but I will only be travelling there a month later. I'm lucky enough though to have days off from work on Thursday and Friday, but I'm still undecided where to go see them, as I live near Cologne, and while Heidelberg is definitely closer than Hamburg, the itinerary for Heidelberg doesn't sound like the children would likely be involved... What do you all think?
I haven't commented in a while because I was a tad busy with moving to Berlin - only to find out that the Duke and Duchess will also visit my hometown, Heidelberg. What an irony... (Not that I moved to Berlin because of the royal visit. But in fact because in Heidelberg, as beautiful as it is, nothing ever happens. Now I've been away for like two seconds, and we have a royal visit). The tour sounds very well planned, a nice mixture of very serious and solemn events and a bit of fun. Them standing in front of the Brandenburger Tor will result in another photo for the history books, just like the Eiffel tower, Taj Mahal, Uluru rock,... ones. I'm looking forward to the fashion Kate will choose. Maybe she will choose some young Berlin designer like Hien Le, or rather go with well established brands like Hugo Boss or Strenesse.

What I completely missed while reading your fantastic post the first time, dear Charlotte, is, that C&W will meet with individuals from the Robert Enke Foundation. While I know, everyone including me will focus on the kids, the fashion, the nice pictures, I can just encourage you all to google him and read more about his story - it's a heartbreaking one. And it's a reminder to us all to do what Heads together has told us: Talk to our loved ones about our mental health. Charlotte, if you ever find the time, maybe you could include one or two lines about him in one of your well researched posts.

Kate may have the help of Becca, Sophie, Natasha and Amanda, but it seems her sister, Pippa, now also has two "Girl Fridays", with one acting as her minder.

They most likely have a regular housekeeper, cook and will have a nanny when necessary is my guess.

Love the outfit from the neck down. Don't care much for the shorter hair style. I think the main reason is that the shorter cut is just so ordinary. Catherine in longer hair adds character and interest. It's distinctive.

I really love Kate's hair shorter. I think in person from the videos it looks much better than just a photo. It can be styled so many ways, from the curls today, to a more smooth look, to still being able to put it up. I like it down around her shoulders than behind her ears. Loved her whole outfit today, dress, shoes, earrings, and purse. I like how she is mixing up the shoe and purse color. Thanks Charlotte! Looking forward to their upcoming travels and all the fun outfits. :)

ReplyDeleteWow ! To day's is, to me, one of her best in the year ! Looks perfect. The dress fits her without looking too tight like the Gucci ( she looked as if she had taken the wrong size, so squezzy and ridiculously short, out of proportion for such a tall lady) and the design is splendid, flowing around her legs, material and finish of the hem (called in French a ´roulotté') , the shoes (she looks great with block heels, makes a good visual balance) and her hand bag , and her shorter hair do fit her silhouette, she does look what she is : A beautiful happy and active young lady ! And I must say .... I love polka dots !

Kate looks relaxed and I like the way she was interested in the ball boys and girls and made them feel special.

ReplyDelete'Brandenburg Gate, Berlin’s most famous landmark and a symbol of German unification' is not entirely true! It's the last of 18 city gates of Berlin and had been built between 1789 and 1793... so not really in 1989 :-)
