We're back with news Kensington Palace confirmed Kate will join William and Harry on 10 October, World Mental Health Day, at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the contribution of those working in the mental-health sector across the UK. The event will recognise the progress, hard work and dedication of those determined to raise awareness of mental health issues over many years. The Palace added: "It will also provide an opportunity for Their Royal Highnesses to thank those from the sector for the support they provide to so many going through difficult times in their lives."
News of the event broke yesterday, when an invitee who works in the field of mental health shared his invitation on Twitter. With the engagement common knowledge on social media it's possible this was one of the reasons for confirming, however, I don't believe they would have mentioned Kate unless it's thought there's a strong possibility she'll be there.
With the Duchess unwell, Kensington Palace have been taking planned events on a case-by-case basis. The news is the first indication Kate is beginning to feel a little better. Perhaps based on the patterns of her previous pregnancies, it's felt she will be well enough to resume engagements in October. I understand there is to be a continued firm focus on mental health with the next stage of Heads Together getting underway. Kate will want to be very much involved in that and in carrying out their intended schedule for the campaign, if she's well enough. More from royal reporter Victoria Murphy:

Events marking World Mental Health Day are becoming a staple for the Cambridges. In 2015 they marked the day at an event hosted by the organisation MIND at London's Harrow College.
In 2016, the royal trio marked the day with a special Heads Together event. They had the opportunity to meet with people who had received help from a relative, colleague or friend in crucial moments in their lives, and the person who provided that support. They also gave a joint speech on the campaign which was in its very early stages at the time.
With today's news, one imagines the November tour will likely go ahead as scheduled. We'll keep you updated on further calendar changes.

Next, we're taking a look at the second portion of submissions for the Duchess to wear to the royal premiere of James Bond movie Royal Flush. In previous years, we focused on white-tie affairs such as state banquets (something we'll likely return to next year). It's been tremendously interesting to see your take on black tie, and the looks fit in incredibly well with the movie and the general theme!
Bluefire - Bluefire chose a Rosa Clará long tailored gown with a boat neckline and a scene-stealing jewelled back (we show the front of the dress in red, as a product shot wasn't available in the chosen colourway). To finish the look it's Stuart Weitzman Sensual Sandals and the Tory Burch Jamie Bag.
Alaina from NJ - A navy embellished gown from Marchesa Notte with a scoop back is styled with Kate's Gianvito Rossi Suede Mary Jane Pumps. Alaina accessorised with the dazzling Annoushka Dusty Diamonds Topaz Drop Earrings and a London blue topaz bracelet.
Darla - Darla selected a strapless Carolina Herrera gown with a fitted bodice, pockets and a flowing skirt from the Bridal Spring 2018 Collection. We've seen Kate take gowns from Bridal collections before and have them customised in bespoke colours - exactly what Darla would do - in sapphire blue. Diana's seven strand pearl and sapphire choker adds a serious injection of regal sparkle.
Lily - "The white version of Roland Mouret's Cheveley gown would look simply stunning on Kate." The Pre-Fall 2017 floor-length gown is styled with Jimmy Choo Collar Stiletto Sandals, Forest Of Chintz Ocean Mini Audiere blue clutch and the earrings and bracelet from Princess Diana's Oman Sapphire and Diamond suite.
Downton Abbey Fan - The After Six Satin & Chiffon Gown, described as "Radiant satin highlights every curve in the tailored keyhole bodice of this memorable gown, balanced by an airy A-line skirt". Downton Abbey Fan accessorised with Kate's Jimmy Choo Vamp Sandals, the L.K. Bennett Frances Blue Satin Clutch, The Queen's Diamond Cluster earrings and wedding gift bracelet.
Louise, London - "For the evening event, because it is a film premiere rather than a state event, I'd like to see Kate wear something more like her pre-engagement style." The look features the turquoise Matthew Williamson One-shoulder pleated silk-chiffon gown, Kate's cream Prada sandals, Kiki green tourmaline and kunzite earrings, Queen Mary's diamond bangles worn on Kate's left wrist and the Dolce & Gabbana painted wood clutch.
Bluhare - "William will not be wearing a tux at my event. He will be wearing a black or very dark grey suit, with black shoes, and a tie that contrasts with Kate's outfit." Bluhare chose a black dress with a sparkling pop of pink by Carmen Marc Valvo. The sleeveless cocktail length dress features a full skirt. Bluhare accessorised the piece with Christian Louboutin Marylineska Eelskin & Leather Ankle-Strap Sandals, a hot pink Chanel clutch and pink sapphire earrings. The look is completed with black satin short gloves.
Little Miss Sunshine - "I decided to go for a different colour palette than Kate's usual evening looks, and combine it with the Temple of Heaven earrings she already owns." Little Miss Sunshine selected the Roland Mouret Addover Gown in pink acetate from the 2017 Pre-Fall collection with the L.K. Bennett Lindy clutch, Ralph Lauren Tarah sandals and yellow gold cuff from Johannes Hunter jewellers.
S. from E. - "I wanted to give the outfit for a James Bond premiere a patriotic touch by adding a sparkly union jack clutch from McQueen. Since this is not as formal as a state banquet, a slit in the dress is totally appropriate and adds some va-va-voom." We see a red off-the-shoulder jersey gown from David's Bridal with Kate's Jimmy Choo Dart Sandals and the Duchess of Teck earrings.
Snarrbucks - Snarrbucks chose the Carmen Marc Valvo Floral Halter Neck Floor-Length Gown, Stuart Weitzman Nudist Goosebump Suede Sandals, the Bottega Veneta Woven Satin Clutch and Queen Victoria's Crown Ruby earrings.
Julie from NC - "A burgundy Cameron Blake lace A-line gown with lace slight cap sleeves, lace sweetheart neckline, ruched crisscross bodice accented with hand-beaded applique at side." Julie styled it with Gianvito Rossi Mesh Ankle Strap Pumps and a dazzling statement necklace. Julie added "Earrings are custom made to include one of the pink round stone at top rolled by leaves drop to match the necklace".
Deb from Brazil - "Playing stylist is so much fun, I really wanted to take part in it. However, I have very little free time. I wish I had more time to look for accessories, shoes, etc, but unfortunately, I can't." Deb chose a flowing burgundy one-shoulder Elie Saab gown for the premiere from the Ready-to-Wear Fall 2014 Collection.
Royalfan - Royalfan selected the Carolina Herrera Sequined Illusion Tulle Gown with a v neckline and keyhole back. The gown is styled with Stuart Weitzman Nudistsong Sandals, a royal blue clutch and Harry Winston jewels.
Tammy from California - "The dress: I know it's very simple, but with ruffles and lace being all the rage I think the clean lines are elegant". We have the Alfred Sung Strapless High/Low Sateen Twill Gown, the Christian Louboutin Douce Du Desert Ankle Tie Pump and antique bohemian garnet earrings.
Ballina from Austria - Ballina would love to see Kate wearing the slinky emerald green Galvan Halteneck Silk-Satin Gown. The gown with a self-tie halterneck and sharp, cutaway shoulders is teamed with the Rupert Sanderson Pinka pumps, a Judith Leiber Couture clutch and pink fringed earrings by Katerina Makriyianni.
Indigoisle - Indigoisle picked a gown by Jenny Packham for the premiere. "Cut from figure-skimming dusty-blue crepe, this ethereal gown is detailed with an off-white lace and sheer beige tulle bodice sprinkled with sparkling crystals and sequins." It's accessorised with the Sophia Webster Clara embellished gold-tone box clutch and Kiki Blue Topaz and Diamond Drop earrings.
Mary from CR - Mary would love to see the return of the beautiful grecian lavender Alexander McQueen gown Kate wore for a BAFTA event in Los Angeles in 2011. She accessorised it with Gianvito Rossi Glam Twist sandals and the Queen's Amethyst earrings.
Smiley - "I picked a golden dress as Kate cannot wear this colour for tiara occasions like state banquets because all the tiaras, earrings, necklaces, etc from the royal collection are silver or white gold so this would not match at all." Smiley chose the Zuhair Murad Embroidered Cap-Sleeve Flared Gown, Kate's brown Emmy Shoes pumps, Kate's Catherine Zoraida 'Spread your Wings' bracelet and Kiki Smoky Quartz and Diamond Cushion Drop earrings.
KM Fan - KM Fan also looked to the amazing Zuhair Murad - choosing the One-shoulder embellished tulle and silk-blend chiffon gown. It's styled with the Jimmy Choo Marianne Glittered Leather Sandals and the Celeste clutch. The look is completed with antique sapphire earrings.
BethNY - It's the very princessy Monique Lhuillier One Shoulder Asymmetrical Gown: "Rendered in baby blue silk, this one shouldered gown features a high low cascading skirt and delicate floral embroidery." It's paired with the Gianvito Rossi Portofino Suede Ankle-Strap Sandals, Kate's black McQueen clutch, the Queen's wedding gift bracelet and Carole Middleton's blue topaz chandelier earrings by Robinson Pelham.
Inez from Sweden - "In my mind I was picturing the premiere in the winter so I wanted to go for a wintery theme. Perhaps the premiere of the next Fantastic Beasts movie." Inez would love to see Kate in a full-length version of the black floral print Paolo Sebastian dress below with Gianvito Rossi Suede pumps, the L.K. Bennett Nina clutch and the Queen's Pear Drop earrings.
Gabi K - Gabi presented her look in a graphic featuring a sleeveless Balenciaga gown with peplum detail, Kate's Jimmy Choo Vamp pumps, a black Prada clutch, the Queen's (enormously popular) wedding gift bracelet and Robinson Pelham earrings.

It's impossible to know, we can only speculate. I think it's very possible Kate was further along this time than when she had to announce with George and Charlotte. Kate's HG tends to be at it's very worst up to about four months; there appears to be an expectation she'll be over the worst by early October. We could see that tweet from KP anytime now - equally it could be several weeks. KP will be mindful of firmly focusing on Invictus from Saturday until it ends.
I think KP will release the news when Kate reaches 12 weeks, but I suspect that won't be until October... just my two cents :)

ReplyDeleteThat's true, Anon, and by the time of the Belgian ceremonies, Kate looked a bit uncomfortable. But she turned up at Balmoral in August, able to go to church. During the White Garden visit, she again looked very happy, though thinner than in July. And then it was announced that Kate had such severe HG that she missed her son's first day of school. The timing is not quite clear, but KP will no doubt announce her approximate due date eventually!
DeleteSigh. I guess she really won't be stepping up until next Fall. It obviously isn't her fault (she is ill, after all) but a bit of planning by the two of them would've done no harm - with PP retiring and after selling the "they will increase their workload on Autumn" statement for months, it seems like the worst time to add a little one to the mix. That, or 3.0 was an accident, but I doubt that.

DeleteHow is this a bad time? A bad time for you? A woman can have a baby any time that she wants and it should not be up to anyone but her and her partner. Also, William is obviously stepping up big time.. I'm not directing this right you Frenchie but it seems to me that people want Kate to work because they get to see her and her clothes. Her husband is stepping up (hugely) - they are a team.
DeleteYou can plan all you want and you may get pregnant when you think it is impossible, you may get pregnant within a few days of deciding to go for it or you may not get pregnant for months and months if at all. Also prior experiences with getting pregnant are not reliable for future "attempts".

DeleteIt's not a question of 'seeing her and her clothes' it's that she's expected to be a working princess representing her nation and justifying the benefits she receives - part of a very few active members - and one of only three relatively youthful ones - of a family firm whose work ethic is being increasingly questioned, even by people who have generally taken the royal family as a matter of course.
DeleteKate is of course free to have as many children as she wants, just as any woman is - but that is not going to make the work issue vanish, just as women who may want a third child have to consider whether they can afford to. (And the timing was not good from a work point of view - both because of the feeling it is time for younger members to step up considerably -and because of the third child tax credit issue.)
So it's congratulations Kate and if you want your children (at least the first two - I doubt the third will be an active royal) to have future royal employment - you'd best get back to work as soon as you are able.
I of course mean the royal family firm, not the Middletons - although just heard caustic remarks from hubby about why James Middleton 'doesn't get a job...' instead of floundering with those failing enterprises.
Also, "new stage" for HT? It seems like a stalled campaign since the Marathon, and although the "encourage people to speak about their feelings" it's amazing, it's been over-repeated. What it's really the purpose of HT? How does it help anyone outside of letting them talk? Especially considering how difficult it can be for people to do so.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I wonder that myself. I get that it's important to get people talking to each other, because a support system is huge if you're feeling emotionally vulnerable or depressed. I don't think it's trying to address clinical mental illness -- psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar -- things like that, but depression, PTSD, anxiety, all of that which can have a huge impact on how we live our lives.

The initiative is supposed to steer funding into certain charities, but it seemed nebulous, and there didn't seem to be much information on what to do other than talk? Obviously, this campaign is in GB and I'm not there so perhaps more information is available there than I have here.
I do think it's a great idea, and I do hope they build something with it, as well as talking about things with each other and/or a counselor.
I am curious what the "new state" will be. I think the work William, Kate, and Harry have undertaken to decrease the stigma surrounding mental health has been amazing. Starting conversations and making mental illness less of a taboo is incredibly important, but Bluhare you are right that there is so much more to coping with mental illness than just talking about it. I think a productive next step would be highlighting the professionals and organizations who treat mental illness and encouraging new as well as existing treatments.
DeleteThis is something I have wondered for a while. While it's great to encourage people to talk they need to be go beyond just that. It takes more than just talking about it to break a stigma. I just feel like this grazes the surface and they need to go deeper than what they're doing. Mental health is a huge issue that encompasses many different things so I think they need to be more specific and not so broad.
DeleteI also think one of the problems is they keep talking about how everyone needs to talk about their emotions. It sounds like they're confusing emotional health with mental health. While emotions are important they are very different from mental health issues. Those are two very different things. I just think this campaign needs more direction and emphasis-less generality.
I think that's a good point, cKat. Emotional health is different than mental health, although they do intersect, and Anne pretty much said the same thing too. Hopefully the second stage will have some more constructive suggestions about what to do after you start unburdening yourself with a sympathetic listener.

I think they are thinking that talking about it removes stigma and at least gets some momentum which then the charity sector can take and do more in-depth messaging on.

Let's also remember that HT is in its beginning stages. I'm sure that it will evolve and grow in scope over time. Very few things start fully formed. As a beginning, talking about emotions as part of a mental health strategy is completely appropriate. Once that is established (it's not over-repeated for everyone--perhaps only those of us who follow the royals as intently as we do), other facets of mental health and building the resources through charity work so that more people can access services will follow. I believe they will succeed in this.

Have you checked out the HT site? It may help you understand the over-all goals and purpose. It is meant to coordinate a number of individual organizations and as such is not really meant to be a mental health resource itself.
DeleteThe Marathon was a kick-off, not an ending. Both KP and the HT site clearly state that the effort is just in its initial stages. Also, William has stated this in speeches.
Considering how long the taboo/hidden nature of mental illness has existed, it will take the efforts of many in multiple forums over many years to make it truly "ok2Say." The reported reaction of some royals to the involvement of the three in HT and other MH organizations illustrates that there is a long way to go.
The hint of mental illness history of a political candidate, a prospective employee can still ruin one's chances of success. There is a reason people have been hesitant to come forward with concerns and thus take a first step on the road to help. Not to mention that treatment for mental illness is discriminated against as compared to physical illness by insurance companies.
I think the emotions versus mental health debate is quibbling. They are of the same cloth. Even behavior resulting from a brain tumor can involve mental-emotional health.
Chemical imbalances can cause emotional fluctuations. There are popular stereotypes about hormonal emotional extremes in pregnancy and that "certain time of the month." Chemical imbalances also are at the root of clinical depression.
I think one problem in discussing this topic is the term mental health is being used by HT as equivalent to physical health. Not as synonymous with mental illness. They are talking about wellness, not illness. As in physical illness, once one becomes ill, it is no longer a matter of health maintenance, such as eating a healthy diet or talking about one's concerns---it becomes a matter for those qualified to treat illness, such as a physician or psychologist.
To summarize: talking to family, friend, teacher about feelings is part of mental health maintenance--just as eating a healthy diet is a part of physical health maintenance.

I have been to the Heads Together site and it's all about ending the stigma of mental health. I agree with that. Other than that there was not much concrete information.
DeleteI do not think emotional wellness vs. mental health is quibbling. Emotional wellbeing issues tend to be situational and resolvable. William and Harry got into it because of their experiences dealing with grief. That may not be resolvable, but it can be treated and the person can learn to live with it and not let it control their lives and behavior. A lot of mental health conditions are not resolvable at all, and the treatment for the two is not the same.
Read the part at the end of the home page that explains their focus and the boxed in part about the London Marathon. There is a reference to every statement I made about HT, including the focus on wellness as well as the Marathon's being a "springboard" to kick off the effort. "Springboard" is a direct quote from the site.
DeleteIt is possible that some became confused about the part the marathon played because it was the chosen charity for the year for that marathon sponsored by Branson. There was publicity during the lead up associated with the marathon. That particular association ended with the 2017 London Marathon. The HT initiative was never meant to last just one year. The London Marathon association WAS just for the year. Each year a specific charity is chosen. Again, this comes from the official site...you will need to read more than the first paragraph. I would tend to credit the official Heads Together site before a tabloid site.
Bluhare, I see your point about emotional/mental health. Again, I think the "mental health conditions" you refer to are actually mental illnesses. I do think one can reflect one's mental status by the way emotions are expresses. In my comment I clearly stated the difference between mental health maintenance and mental illness. I was comparing mental health to wellness aspects, as the organizations partnered with HT seem to do. In that context, just talking about feelings, emotions, problems can be a form of preventing some non-organic mental illness---such as eating a healthy diet can help prevent some physical illness. I also think it illustrates the stigma of labeling a problem as a "mental illness," as opposed to a mental health condition. One would not hesitate to say one has an illness if the root was physical. Illnesses can range from the flu to cancer. Mental illness also has a spectrum, yet I think people sometimes think only of the more severe mental illnesses when the term is mentioned and that is where the stigma comes in. I think some people hesitate to see a physician if there is a fear of a catastrophic diagnosis such as cancer. I also think people may hesitate seeing a psychologist or psychiatrist for the same reason. (that and the high fees)
What I should have done is just copy the parts I referred to from the site. I was hoping those interested could find it on their own since I am probably the least tech-savvy of any commenter here. I do apologize if I have not made my points clearly enough. Meanwhile, I like to think that you and I, bluhare, may not be as far apart in our opinions as it may seem. DeleteWhat keeps troubling me is that there is all this talk about having a discussion - but little enough about training people to be helpful and thoughtful listeners which is surely half of what's necessary for a discussion to be productive and to prevent possibly even worse damage by speaking to the wrong person. Even with parents, it's important they know how to respond correctly.
DeleteI do feel royals do best bringing attention to a wide range of issues rather than specialising. Because that's when these awkward points arise - when people expect more specific answers, and when the question of resources is raised. It's very easy for it to become a political matter. This doesn't mean it's not a hugely important area - but the 'starting a discussion' is beginning to seem superficial and those of us who have noticed at all are thinking - what is the continuation...
Julia-I agree about the need for intelligent, thoughtful, trained advice in referral to diagnostic and treatment facilities. Listening is possible without giving advice, however. (don't tell my Aunt Gladys that)
DeleteKate introduced the new Anna Freud Center focus and film (a partner in HT, I believe) which
includes training for teachers and others. HT is under the auspices of The Foundation of The Duke etc...and is the umbrella under which the " partner" organisations gather. It has an organizing and unifying purpose and leaves most of the member groups to supply specific needs. I think we spoke previously about how such an organization can streamline and coordinate to allow sharing of resources and avoid needless duplication.
It is important that professionals-doctors, nurses, teachers, perhaps employers be able to recognise the symptoms of illness and make the proper referrals. I think that differs sometimes from the type of listening a friend or neighbor would do. I'm not sure where parents belong in this listening continuum. Hopefully, as informed and not just sympathetic listeners. There is a need for both.
For perspective on how long the discussion should last and how important...how long has the discussion of women's rights gone on and where are we now after all that time? Where would we be if the subject had not been endlessly and openly discussed?
The royal's place in humanitarian concerns and the like---Royals have name and face recognition. They can lend authority and attention to a project just by being a patron. Sometimes William is criticized for not getting down in the trenches and really "doing something." Now he is criticized for being too involved.
It is difficult to say how much is too much. No one seems to criticize Harry for his deep involvement in Invictus. No one begrudges Sophie her interest in eye disease causes.
I think it's a well intentioned endeavour that is sorely needed and I agree somewhat; however, I get tired of all this attention bringing with little to no follow up. Let me say that and then bow out. Thank you.

Or at least, it seems to me that you did, while they continually conflate the two issues. I seem to think that Kate uses the two terms interchangeably, but maybe I am wrong. I hope that at one point they clarify exactly what they are trying to achieve and what is best left to specialists.

DeleteI will bow out too, but say before I go that it is a question of seriously strained resources - and that is why it is important to make a distinction between those who need clinical intervention (and Harry's comments about pills will be controversial - both because many mental health issues are best served with medication but also because pills may be used when immediate therapy resources are not available.)
DeleteIt is hugely important to bring attention to organisations like Anna Freud which does work to train people - but also to recognise people who simply are concerned with their mental well-being are most likely going to be speaking to family and friends - not overworked medical staff who won't have the time to listen. So half of the discussion must be teaching people to listen wisely - there are a great many well-meaning Aunt Gladys out there - more than those who will just listen and not advise, - when that advice may be unhelpful or even damaging and that's where I feel the HT message has been lacking.
For instance I just gave advice to a friend with family difficulties - she's not depressed but she is under strain. My heart was in my mouth for fear of saying wrong, but she found my practical suggestions helpful and I believe she meant that - but she also noted she felt others had only criticised how she was handling the situation. I don't believe that's true - I believe it's her perception from them not wording what they were saying with care - but people under much strain do perceive things in a vulnerable way. (I've been there.) So knowing how to receive a conversation is just as important as starting one. And it's also worth remembering many people face depression because they are lonely and isolated and have no one to start that conversation with. So it is an enormously complex issue that can be simplified by just saying 'talk'.
Yes, it is a 'catch-22' for William and for all royals, frankly - of being sufficiently involved to have a sincere and knowledgeable interest but not stepping too far into complex issues that may have political and other ramifications. Unfortunately, that's part of the job of being a royal - achieving that fragile balance. And to my mind, the best things royals can do is be out there - William's visit to Merseyside is as important as a foundation few are aware of, or websites relatively few look at - royals everywhere bring best attention by their presence.
I noticed in Prince Harry's Invictus opening ceremonies speech he referenced emotional issues, not mental health issues, when referring to the veterans.

Just talked today with a pregnant friend who has suffered from severe nausea during the entire 9 month! It must be so terrible! Hope that the worst passes for the duchess after the first 3-4 months and that she will enjoy her third pregnancy.

DeleteI will weigh in later with additional comments, but I just couldn’t wait to say how much I LOVE the dress that Tammy from California chose. Yes, the dress is simple. But that’s what I love about it… simple but oh-so-elegant! I also think that Kate should wear more strapless evening dresses. And the color is absolutely gorgeous!! This is one of my favorite dresses… ever. The garnet earrings are nice, too. This just goes to show that Kate doesn't need to spend thousands of pounds in order to look fabulous.

OOOH lots of wonderful dresses, jewels, shoes and bags. I think she will not go super formal and I actually would love to see her in either of the non floor length dresses for the occasion. I especially love the Paolo Sebastian dress Inez chose, but would not lengthen it. I can also see Kate wearing the Carmen Marc Valvo Floral Halter Neck Floor-Length Gown, Snarrbucks chose.

ReplyDeleteAlaina - That is a beautiful gown. I love the V in the back. But that bracelet is beautiful and I want it for myself. Well I would actually like three of them to stack them. Lol. Kate is tall enough to pull of a skirt that full. This dress would also work for a white tie occasion.
Darla - Love your idea! I feel like the top and skirt are very much similar to her wedding gown, so we know she likes the silhouette. It would even be beautiful if it were kept in white and a blue overlay was added. Then she could use the dress as a base and have different overlays. Does that make sense? Lol. Your idea is fab though and Kate would look great.
Lily - Kate has been really into the cold shoulder look recently and also likes Mouret gowns. So this checks both of those boxes. I love the kicky slit which helps to put a spotlight on footwear. Love the shoes too!
Downton Abbey Fan - Another blue! I love that so many of the DKB stylists stuck to what they know Kate likes or gravitates towards. I love the simplicity of the gown and that you chose a lighter blue clutch.
Louise - That is a lovely colored gown. I so wish she would go back to her prewedding or immediate post wedding wardrobes. I love the clutch. It is fun and would totally work for this occasion.
Bluhare - THOSE EARRINGS!!! I glanced at the dress then saw those exquisite earrings. Love the shoes and the dress is really pretty. The addition of the black gloves is fabulous and the whole look is sassy yet elegant. I would love it if Kate had enough gumption to wear the whole look.
Little Miss Sunshine - Another sassy look! I love the dress and the gold accessories. That bracelet is divine. The look is simple and elegant and yet still has substance.
S. From E - Another cold shoulder which Kate likes and red is always lovely on her. This is SO appropriate for the event and her age. It isn't in the least bit matronly or buttoned up. The purse would be perfect for a Bond premiere. Well done!
Snarrbucks - Not many people can pull off that type of neckline and a bold print. Either separately or together. Kate can do both. She is willowy enough that this would work so well. Love the look and the earrings!
Julie from NC - That gown was MADE for that necklace. That necklace is heavenly and that color would be lovely on Kate. The dress is great but my eyes keep drifting back to THAT necklace. Amazing job!
Royalfan - Lovely princess gown. The jewelry pairs perfectly with that dress. The diamonds look like the silver sequins/beads throughout the dress. I would love to see this at a white tie tiara event.
Tammy - I would totally wear this entire look to an event. Love the color of the dress and the high -low hem. Those shoes would be great when they peaked through the skirt. Amazing choices.
Ballina - Now that is a red carpet gown. Love the different colors you chose to accessorize with and the purse if fabulous.

ReplyDeleteMary from CR - I would love to see that gown again. She could really take it up several notches with different accessories than the first time she wore it. The earrings are beautiful and those shoes looks so delicate. She could even add an amethyst brooch on the front of the belt as well.
Smiley - This reminds me of a grown up Belle from Beauty and the Beast. Kate has a complexion that works well with so many colors and I think this would be great. Love the look.
KM Fan - Kate loves blue, lace and swishy skirts and this has all of those. The color is great and I keep hoping she will discover Murad. Great look.
Beth - Another great blue dress. It is fun and youthful but elegant. Love the embroidery as well and have loved those earrings since the wedding.
Inez - I think a dress with that much embroidery, or embellishments, is overwhelming when it is full length but this length makes it work so well. Paolo Sebastian has designed some really great gowns and Kate would loo really nice in this dress.
Gabi - Lovely color and we know Kate loves peplum so this would work for her. The earrings are really cute. Well done!
Deb - When this Saab dress came out I fell in love with it. The color is so rich and robust. I kept hoping one of the royal ladies would wear it. I know you didn't have time to pick the accessories but I think these things would be great with it.

ReplyDeleteBluefire - This gown would give a wonderful sense of drama as Kate steps out of the car - a plain front to the gown and then that dramatic, beautiful sexy back. A great look.
Alaina from NJ - Kate has shown a love for Marchesa. I don't always share it but definitely do here - this gown would make her look like the queen of the night - in a good sense. It would sparkle in the camera flashes, and I love the blue topaz with it.
Darla - it's always a question how to make a piece of iconic jewellery your own and you've done brilliantly for Kate here. We all associate Diana's sapphire choker with blue velvet - by pairing it with a dramatic plain white gown it would be a completely new and wonderful look - I hope Kate considers that.
Lily - Middle Eastern jewels often have a very modern flair that need a modern gown to match and that Mouret gown would be perfect for Diana's bracelet and earrings - as I mentioned to Darla - I love the idea of white with the sapphires because I don't remember Diana using that pairing - it would be original to Kate.
Downton Abbey fan - this elegant blue gown reminds me a lot of the successful gowns Kate wore before her marriage that relied on cut to make an effect - navy is good on Kate and this would be subtle yet sexy look.
Louise - London - I see we think alike on taking Kate back to her more simple and sophisticated look she wore before she was married - it really suited her. I love the aqua (well Leo and I used it) and wish she would wear more Williamson - I loved the grey cocktail dress of his. Pink with aqua is inspired and I wish the queen would loan Kate those bracelets.
bluhare - you're always original and it would be a lot of fun to see William and Kate go fun and funky - those gloves would be a masterstroke - and I love those pink sapphire earrings - incredibly gorgeous.
Little Miss Sunshine - I love it that so many have chosen gowns with a sharp cut - and black and white with gold is a great and original combination - that would be a great look for Kate.
S From E - Love that bag - it would be so fun - that red gown looks pure Kate with a slit that would really show off - and lovely to pair it with the Teck earrings - that will wake Queen Mary from her grave.
Snarrbucks. I only discovered Carmen Marc Valvo recently and he does wonderful gown - I love how this one would show off the shoes and the ruby earrings would be fabulous - if the queen would allow.
Julie from N.C. - that claret coloured gown would truly show off that marvellous necklace that looks to belong around a royal neck - it reminds me of Princess Mary's popular ruby tiara. (This gown would be great for her too.) The gown has a lovely flow.
Deb from Brazil - Another great claret coloured gown - I think that's a fabulous colour on Kate and for a gown of such drama - the accessories could be quite simple.

DeleteMe too, Julia. That was truly Kate at her best sartorially. I still maintain that William's comments to her in the royal barge changed the course of her wardrobe. I cannot prove it (yet, lol) but after that her style became the style we see now.

ReplyDeleteI'm very cautious about Kate appearing in October although I hope she does - engagements were announced earlier for her and then she cancelled - and this is on an invite - the palace hasn't made a statement about her being there. But hopefully she will be better and can attend.
I'm not convinced that the baby will be so early - I'd put my money on mid to late April. Kate has usually fallen ill close to the beginning and she looked very healthy on the visit to the garden. I don't think William's remarks can be taken too literally - after all, he also said Kate was doing well.
I do wish Kate would use her visits to meet people and would do the videos on a separate specific occasion - I believe the results would be superior too.
I believe the timeline is the same as with Charlotte. They announced that pregnancy on September 8th and Kate had her first engagement on October 21st.

I think you are correct about home turf, sofy. I had not thought of that in relation to her illness. Quite a different situation from an away day or even the KP garden appearance. It is easier to slip away unnoticed at a reception, if she started feeling ill. She could be home in bed in minutes. That might be a reason why KP felt it could be announced this far ahead. The invitation publication probably forced an announcement a little ahead of the usual two weeks, as well
DeleteJulia - the Palace did say on Twitter that she would be attending. Still could have been forced by the invitation, but still does seme a little more like she might feel like she can go for now at least.
DeleteBtw - are we talking about William's comments to that midwife? She was one of the former addicts he met right? If so, my guess is he said he'd be seeing her sooner than she thought because they might have invited her to the party since it's for mental health and Kate has always talked about addiction being her area of work for mental health (which always made me laugh a little given that she barely does more than the bare minimum of 1 engagement per year for action for addiction and I think she has actually mentioned mental health in relation to addiction during one of those events maybeeee like once the whole time).
I don't twitter - or is it tweet - so I missed that. Still, it sounds hopeful she may appear. I do think William's comment was mostly just a bit of pleasantness.

DeleteHi Surfer Girl, I think it would be very difficult to continue her career, unless she did Shakespeare (LOL) at the Old Vick. Certainly romantic roles would be out of the question. Princess Grace had to give all that up, of course that was years ago, but times don't change that rapidly with royalty.

Tammy from California - I like the simpler cuts very much myself - Kate wears this length very well - it would show off those shoes and dramatic earrings and the strapless top would make it formal enough.
Ballina from Austria - I love teal for Kate - it would highlight her eyes and that silk is absolutely luscious - it would be a very elegant look and also looks as if it would be heaven to wear.
Indigoisle - Kate loves light blue and this is such a pretty dress - sexy yet also romantic - it would be a lovely choice for her -and would show off her marvellous figure.
Mary from CR - Many love Kate's black gown but personally this one has always been my favourite where Kate really put the Hollywood actresses in the shade - I would love to see it again - and amethysts would suit it well.
Smiley - we have lots of lovely greens, reds and blues but you are one of only two golds. I loved the gold trimmed gown Kate wore in Malaysia and whilst the fit wasn't quite right, the colour of the gown she wore soon after George's birth looks great on her. I think this would be a much more successful shape for her - but you made me think with your tiara comments - it never occurred to me you couldn't wear gold - but I see the point.
BethNY - The embroidery on this gown is amazing - I love Monique Lhuillier gowns. This icy blue should look wonderful on Kate - and nice to see Carole's earrings in use again.
Inez from Sweden - I have to admit I love this the length it is and think Kate wears that length wonderfully but it would make a good long dress too. Truly striking. I love the queen's earrings with it.
Gabi K. Those boots terrified me at first but with the sandals, this would be a great gown - very modern - again going for cut which Kate looks great in - and again I love that claret tone for her. Very cool earrings too from a favourite designer.

I have no idea why gowns are worn to movie premieres. You're going to be sitting in a movie seat for two hours! I think shorter dresses are much more practical so I went against the grain and did it. Plus I've always wanted to see William in a pink tie which is what he would wear (patterned would be fine) if Kate wore this.
DeleteProbably long gowns (and furs and diamonds) were worn when they were trying to sell Tinseltown as glamorous in the twenties and thirties at the film premieres to create more mystic and get more tickets sold. Just a guess. :)

DeleteJulia, I think the gowns etc. would be more appropriate at the opera or ballet. I guess Kate's not much of an opera or ballet goer, so probably won't be seeing much of her there. But I do find it odd to see royals going to a movie premiere almost as dressed up as they would be for a state dinner so I did mine with the thinking Kate was duchess in bluhareland.

I have been and I didn't - unlike flying, it didn't trouble me at all. It's planes not heights that make me go wobbly. But it wasn't romantic - you're with a number of other people, even if you don't have your own guests. (I prefer Venetian gondolas or horse-drawn carriages in Vienna or Prague for romance.) The view's splendid though, it goes slow, and the queue's not bad if you book ahead.

(It is a wonderful gown.) Men!
bluhare bravely goes on any ride at a carnival (with the exception of the hammer because she almost vomited when she went on it after eating one time), but ferris wheels scare the bejubidus out of her. All that swinging around at the top. And I'm not sure a closed cabin one would be much better.

DeleteI won't go on those frightening rides like they used to have at Leicester Square at Christmas or that Space Mountain at Disney World (once was quite enough) - but I don't believe there is any 'swing' to London Eye (since you're standing, you might fall if it did) so think bluhare would be fine as long as she doesn't mind heights.

Well, the Queen has just a small small rotation of designers that has worked for her for a long time. I would think that kind of relationship is more built on trust than if you get fitted for a dress here and there at a designer. NDAs are soooo common and I would use them very freely if I was in a position where someone would want to blab about me.

I checked out her website to see what she has been up to and found it strange that under the section "Royal Interviews" she only has one listing: Gary Goldsmith. This leaves me questioning her sources. Like Rosman said, not much we didn't know already. Plus, if there were NDAs and they were as tough as reported who would legally risk talking to her (unless they got permission from Kate herself)?

DeleteOne thing I do wish KP would do is when they buy clothes from a designer off the rack without the designer realizing - I wish they would start giving them a little bit of a heads up that she's about to wear their dress - I always feel bad when a website crashes and/or the designer runs out of the particular outfit so fast when we all know they'd be selling tons more if one of those two things didn't happen so soon after an engagement bc they weren't ready. I get the logistical issues, although for some of the smaller engagements, who really cares if it leaked a few days before or something? I bet if it happened it would get old super fast for ppl to be writing and reading articles regularly about something Kate may wear for an hour lol - it's one thing during the buildup for a tour but this wouldn't be that exciting w/ just some random interspersed single engagement at a time.

DeleteRebecca, I agree that everyone uses NDA's and if you are in the public eye and don't want people talking about you then they're necessary. The point is hers are more stringent than the Queen's. The Queen!! I wouldn't want people telling People what I said and what snacks I ate either and whether I pooped and stunk up the bathroom. But to out NDA the Queen? That surprised me a lot. And I wondered why that is. They said Kate pays a lot of attention to her clothes, which is nice that she makes sure they are appropriate and made me wonder if all those Kate nods that I confess I roll my eyes over are in fact correct. But why such tight control? That's what I find interesting, along with the fact that Kate cares very much about her appearance.
What could the people say? Most of her clothes are custom or very high end designer these days. I think her shoes are boring on purpose; she doesn't like people copying what she wears so she wears very conservative shoes that neither add nor distract from what she's wearing, for example.
I came away from that with my opinion of her validated, actually. I've thought for a long time she cares much more about how she looks than what she's actually doing while looking good and there are a lot of people who only really are here for the clothes and fashion, so she's satisfying that segment. And if that's all you're here for she's doing a great job.
bluhare I agree. I will add that I think that it's not just her attention to appearance that Kate wants to keep secret. I think it's also her personality, her true preferences and who she is. See, if the designers were able to say anything about her I would think that they would be asked questions on how she is - what is she like, how does she behave. I think that Kate wants very strict control over that aspect of her image. I can't think of any other public figure that the public actually knows so little about. Even the Queen has shown glimpses of her personality and her nature. The accounts written of her, the earlier documentary have all painted a picture of her in people's minds. Kate is a completely unknown figure. I don't know why she wants to shroud herself in secrecy, but there is no question that she hides.

Kate has demonstrated in her royal duties and work with charities over and over who she is. True, she doesn't make a habit of talking about herself and her private opinions. Is that a bad thing? On the other hand, we hear frequently from Charles about his opinions. Which better represents the apolitical mandate for the BRF and the monarchy?
I truly do not understand what represents too little or too much information for some commenters.
Since there is no one, set rule --what is the standard for comparison? Should Kate have a blog? Give personal information in in-depth magazine interviews? Appear on a television series. Would that help us "know" Kate?
What disturbs me most is judgement and some rather severe remarks based on the words of an author of what reputation published in a forum of what standards and informed by an unknown source. I think those sorts of articles are useful only in backing up what some have already decided is true.
What I really want to know...how did the author get hold of a NDA of the Queens in order to compare it to one of Kate's/Or did she do no original research for herself but went strictly on another's conclusions, which would involve at least two people breaking an NDA. Besides. I imagine HM has means other than enforcing an NDA to bring talkative employees to heel. They can be replaced and have been. She really does not need to rely on a strict NDA.
Bluhare and Rosman, I do think that you are seeing sinister things in Joseph's comments. The queen has far fewer designers, with one being directly in her employ. Far less need for NDAs. As for designers being terrified, I think this simply means that they are terrified of losing her custom. She guarantees massive sales for them and nobody is going to want to lose that by being indiscreet.

The Queen has an aura of mystery; she has never given an interview and she is the monarch, and I understand that as she is the monarch and has deliberately cultivated an air of mystery if you will in conjunction with that.

I am not sure this information is accurate. I suspect that every member of the BRF has the same non disclosure documents that they all use. Those legal documents are pretty standard. Remember when they were scaling down that 40 foot climbing wall and she had the control/safety rope as William went down the wall before her and she asked William (since she had his life in her hands theoretically), "William, how much do you love me?" I thought that was funny and her being real.

That's what I want to see more of. Kate being Kate. She seems to be a very funny and sweet person. I got very frustrated with the video she did on this page. She seemed so intensely guarded. And I don't think the Queen's style of doing videos fits Kate at all. I can totally understand why Kate is guarded. The media is a circus. And I applaud her efforts to be of service. It isn't always easy or pleasant. (And yes she knew what she was signing up for, :)) But my hope is she will start to shine through more and more. We see glimmers of her from time to time as it's very nice. Sadly, the sometimes uptight image does her no favors.
Very much agree - Surfer Girl - as I recall once when someone said Kate was lucky to have William, she retorted that he was lucky to have her. But that sort of wit has been well hidden through much of her marriage.

DeleteI agree. She is full of nonsense on the color palette. Kate looks far better in dark bright colors, not pastels. Reds, greens, dark blues. Of course she is so pretty she would glow in anything. But brighter colors are definitely her thing.

Julia, she is hardly a princess yet - come now. Why would she dress like one? I rather liked that she wasn't trying too hard to fit in. And everyone around them is wearing sneakers and t shirts. So she fits right in. If she was all princess-barbie dolled up she would look ridiculous.
DeleteI am with you on the infatuation part. I am certain that they are already engaged. I am also certain that they are mad about each other now. And I am certain that nothing will convince Harry and Meghan to slow down now. I also have to declare that I would rather enjoy a royal wedding right about now.
But I am with you on the being far from convinced that this relationship will stand the test of time. I hate to make negative predictions but you just can't appreciate a person unless you spend enough time that the infatuation part fades into the background and you discover that you still really like spending time together. I think that Meghan is far far smarter and more worldly than Harry - will she be intrigued and interested and in love with Harry in five, ten, fifteen years? Can't really tell. Kate on the other hand will be utterly completely totally besotted with William. She thinks William is the sun and the moon - she strikes me as easy to please. Meghan - she strikes me as the kind of woman who is hard to impress - I know because I am one myself. I am not that easily impressed with people and less so with most men. Will Meghan remain impressed with Harry forever?
You bring up Sophia of Sweden. I don't know why people dislike her so, (I rather like her) but as far as I know, she and the prince dated many years and lived together many years before getting married. That relationship is rock solid.

DeleteJulia, I do agree with you regarding Meghan's jeans. I realize it's considered stylish (as I write, lol) to look as if you don't care, but for some of us it simply looks like you don't care. ;-)
DeleteI love the idea of the outfit *overall*, but it would have been nice to see a matching belt (loved the shoes and bag!) with non-tattered jeans.
Julia and Rosman, regarding the relationship, yes, it is very easy to get caught up in the excitement of another potential royal wedding. But given the length of the relationship, it *would* be nice if they could live together for a year or two. IMHO, the characteristics that some people believe would/will be her assets as she joins the RF, *I* think may actually work against her. She is not auditioning to be a leading lady here; she will be expected to know her place and it may be quite difficult for someone with her life experience (actress and independent woman in her 30's) to live with.
Let's face it, at the end of the day, the Firm is not looking for a professional public speaker; they want someone who knows WHEN to speak, and WHAT to say...or not.
I saw that, and it may be that Kate and the kids are up there with them:) or she told William and the kids and the Nanny to get out of dodge and let her be ill with her Drs on her own:)) Whatever the case glad William, his Father and his Grandmother had a lovely September/Fall day together in Scotland.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only who is excited for Kate's new adviser Catherine Quinn to start shortly? I am hoping she is going to liven things up with Kate and her charities. I am also hoping to notice a difference if Kate is well enough for the Scandinavian tour in November. I think if Kate does, we may see things run smoother and maybe Ms Quinn will find a new stylist for Kate, someone from vogue, oh how I am hoping. Hopefully Ms Quinn will not be afraid to use up some of Charles' duchy funds for the tours 😄
ReplyDeleteIt will be hard to beat Kate in using up Charles' or rather the public's duchy funds. But I agree with you on wanting someone to liven things up with Kate and her charities. Her charities are just a little footnote in Kate's life, aren't they.

DeletePatricia I. Crathie Kirk church near Balmoral. Just read that Queen Victoria donated two stained glass windows to the church, her servant John Brown is buried there and that Queen Elizabeth I donated a Bible to the church and it had/has the Royal Coat of Arms on the front of it. Lots more gifts from the Royal family have been given to that church also.

Ball with his father. The Ghillies Ball is the annual ball given for the employees of Balmoral Castle. Apparently Prince Phillip had flown back to London early. The Queen will return in two weeks or so.
I am amazed at the number of really stunning outfits that have been suggested for Kate many of them being a great deal better than some she has worn but once again I will not comment on any particular one as so many are outstanding and everyone has their own idea on what is appealing.
ReplyDeleteI must admit I was not impressed with William leaving his sick wife to spend 4 days in Balmoral to attend the very big Annual Gala Ball described as the event of the year held at Balmoral no doubt making the most of Kate's absence and I expect he then spent the weekend on a shoot. He is photographed accompanying the Queen to Church on Sunday not looking overly happy probably recovering from the partying. There was also a photograph of Charles & Camilla and I must admit I thought Camilla looked rather old & drawn especially when compared to the Queen who looked her usual regal self. It would seem that William is still not the loyal caring loving husband many had hoped he would be & clearly has not got the love for Kate that she seems to have for him. He does appear to have a genuine love for his children which sadly does not extend to Kate. In many ways I wish she had not decided to have another child as I think she is risking her long term health and she has 2 lovely children and had appeared to have fully recovered from having Charlotte.
On another note will they still employ the very experienced PS that was due to join Kate in October as I imagine it is unlikely that Kate will be undertaking a great many extra engagements in the next year even if she recovers soon from her sickness
Kate is probably safely ensconced with the Middletons - her comfort zone. She and William have always spent a ton of time apart. William has always gone and done his thing while Kate went and stayed with the Middletons. That's how they do things. That hardly means their marriage is falling apart and Wiliam doesn't love her. Every relationship is different. Really.
DeleteLizzie, that is also a point of contention with me about William for sure. At least he didn't go off to the Duke of Westminster's private Spanish estate with Jecca Craig this time, (of course she is married now so I would hope and pray that would make a difference). He did that when George was a wee baby and Kate ended up taking George to Mustique by herself. He was supposedly staying in London or Cambridge to study his curriculum for duchy agriculture. Hopefully with the Queen at Balmoral no shenanigans would be allowed, even at Birkhall. The thing is, if a man doesn't show love and respect to his wife in any area, it affects the children no matter how much he says he loves his children. So I pray it was all above board and healthful. (Historically, down through the centuries, the Royals have not had the best batting average at those kind of things.)
DeleteI can not even believe this discussion. I am thrilled William was ably to spend some time in Scotland with his Father and Grandparents. I suspect Kate was just as happy to have everyone out of the house. Also how do you know that he did not have the kids and Nanny with him for the weekend or as someone else mentioned maybe Kate and the kids were staying with her folks for part of the time or they with her.This type of speculation is just not appropriate, and frankly I read nothing into his trip to Scotland and more importantly I figure William and Kate can manage their own marriage how they want. William did not leave a sick wife with managing the kids and the house all on her own. She has a Nanny, household help and most likely a nurse. If she is anything like me she is happy to have her husband out of the house and to be left alone to be sick. I can not imagine anyone speculating about the state of my marriage based on me or my husband taking a trip without the other, no matter who else is on the trip. This was the norm for my folks 60 years ago and they were married from their twenties till they both died. It is true for me and my husband and frankly true for most of our friends and their kids who are married, and yes we know some very high profile people who's comings and goings are reported in the press, so everyone does know .

DeleteI'm with Rosman, it's how W&K do things, it's how ROYALS do things and clearly it works for them. If he stayed at home and nursed Kate, he would be considered lazy. Yet when they split up and deal with individual agendas, their marriage is in danger.
