Kate Dances with Paddington for Charities Forum Engagement!

In an unexpected appearance, the Duchess joined William and Harry to meet children from the charities they support on board Belmond British Pullman train at Paddington Station.

The appearance marks Kate's second public engagement since the pregnancy announcement in early September. The Duchess returned to duties last Tuesday evening at a Buckingham Palace reception celebrating the contribution of those working in mental health across the UK. The Palace said the Duchess' condition was steadily improving but she was still suffering from Hyperemesis gravidarum. It's wonderful Kate was able to make it and very much fits in with taking events on a case-by-case basis depending on how she feels.

More from Richard Palmer's story:

'It was her second public appearance since August 30 and since Kensington Palace announced on September 4 that she was pregnant with her third child and suffering from the severe morning sickness hyperemesis gravidarum. She had previously pulled out of the engagement because of the HG, which can cause vomiting up to 60 times a day but decided to join her husband and brother-in-law as she was feeling so well today.
William said: "She's feeling much better. An aide added: "The Duchess is feeling much better but she has still not fully recovered."

The event was hosted by STUDIOCANAL, with support from BAFTA through its BAFTA Kids programme, and before embarking Their Royal Highnesses met the cast and crew from the forthcoming film Paddington 2.

The Duchess thoroughly enjoyed meeting Paddington. I wonder if they brought him a jar of marmalade? :)

In the 'photo of the day', Paddington gave the Duchess a twirl.

George and Charlotte will simply love these images :)

A brilliant video from Sky News.

William and Harry chat with star of the movie Hugh Bonneville.

The Duke and Prince Harry spent time meeting the young guests on board the 1920s and '30s vintage carriages that form the sister train to the Venice Simplon-Orient Express.

Kate had the perfect answer when she was asked "What's the best thing about being a Princess?" by Amelia Kubas, seven, and ten-year-old Mahira Gazi, both from Portway Primary School, in Stratford, east London. She told the girls her favourite thing was "meeting special people like them".

Back to Richard Palmer's story:

'She had a long chat with Esther Windsor and her daughter Lilly, 10, from the Anna Freud Centre in north London. She discussed her shared love of art with Lilly. The Duchess said: "So you're creative. It's great fun, isn't it?" The two also discussed seeing the first Paddington movie and their plans to see the second, which opens on November 10. "Have you ever been on a train like this? No, I haven't either. I was just saying how big and comfy the seats are." After their chat, Lilly's mother, Esther, said: "We really like the train and it's very nice to meet Kate. She seemed very well."
Hugh Bonneville, who plays Henry Brown in the movie, praised the three royals for their support of children's charities. He said:  “Wherever they go awareness is brought to the causes they do wonderfully support. “It’s just fantastic when they can bring a bit of a spotlight to shine on these fantastic causes. Paddington is equally happy to smear them in marmalade!” He said he didn’t want to give too much away but revealed that the second movie’s baddie, played by Hugh Grant, is “not quite so scary as Nicole Kidman” from the first one.'

A video from the train.

The Palace described it as "a unique opportunity for members of Their Royal Highnesses' Charities Forum to nominate some of the children they support – many going through difficult times in their lives – for a special trip aboard the train".

Prince Harry meets young passengers.

After they disembarked, they waved off Belmond British Pullman as it departed Paddington Station to journey through the English countryside.

There are over 30 organisations involved in the Charities Forum, which consists of William, Kate and Harry's' patronages and other organisations with whom they work closely. The Forum aims to bring together Their Royal Highnesses' individual charitable interests. The group meets regularly, with organisations taking it in turns to host. The meetings provide an opportunity for the charities to update Their Royal Highnesses on their recent activities and projects, and also provide a platform for collaborative activity between the organisations. Opportunities to support each other are explored at meetings, relationships are developed and bilateral work is initiated, often between charities and organisations that would not ordinarily have been linked through the course of their own work.

The Duchess wore a pretty peach and black Orla Kiely dress for the outing.

The £139 Raised Flower Fitted Dress has been sold out for some time. It is described: "The dress has a fitted bodice and slim sleeve and pencil shape skirt. Dress falls just below the knee. The boat shape neckline is slightly lower at the back. The dress comes with a detachable contrast fabric bow belt." The dress is from the Autumn/Winter 2013 Collection.

Giulia identified Kate's new shoes as Tod's Suede Pumps. They are described: "Tod's suede pumps are chicness and practicality combined. Masterly crafted by skilled artisans in Italy, this timeless pair sit atop a sturdy block heel and arch to a streamlined pointed toe. The label's signature pebbled sole provides traction for those on-the-go days."

Kate carried her black Mulberry clutch.

The Duchess accessorised with her Cartier Ballon Bleu watch.

And completed the look with Kiki pink morganite earrings.

What a lovely engagement! Hopefully we'll see another surprise appearance on two this month :)

Wonderful to see Kate surprise us with an event! I think this is a very clever way for them to do it. She goes depending on how she feels on the day! I hope she has gotten over the worst by now!

And she looks splendid! I love these kind of powdery pinks and Orla Kiely has some really great stuff. Also like the black accessories with it! Very pretty! The silouette works perfectly in this early pregnancy and the fabric is nice as well. I like the block heels! She looks pretty, happy and comfortable and it makes me so happy to see her out and about again!!

+ 1, Rebecca! And, the upcoming trip to Sweden... how do you feel about that? 😉

Very excited. And a bit... stressed. Don't know if my anxiety will allow me to see them so I feel a bit down because it feels a bit like missing the chance. But I could see them alot of times in the future! Travelling to the UK is so fast and easy so I'm trying to not beat myself up over it if I don't go to see them. Either way it will be great seeing them enjoy my country and hopefully meet my royals!!

    3. I was wondering the same thing, Rebecca. Any preferences for what you'd like to see included on the tour? Any predictions?

Do what makes you comfortable and feels right, Rebecca. If a wonderful situation appears - seize it - but otherwise I wouldn't fret it.

The waits are generally long and the glimpses you get in crowds are very brief at best. The best photos are always here. Part of the excitement of waiting for a royal is being in a crowd and if that isn't comfortable for you, it's not worth it.

I debated trying to stand in the crowds for Diana's and later the York wedding, although I was supposed to work during the latter, but I'm not fond of crowds so I decided not to and haven't regretted it.

There are so many wonderful things to see in Sweden - it will be interesting to see what is planned. I have close friends in Oslo, so am excited to see what will be on the programme there.

Rebecca, I'm sure that whether you get to see them or not, their visit to your country will be a very special and exciting experience! :) And you are right, of course: there will be a lot of opportunities for you to see them in the future. There's always something one can look forward to.

  2. What a lovely surprise! I hope this means that Kate is on the mend. I know that pictures can be deceiving but she looks happy and well. For all I know, she could still be feeling miserable on the inside but she certainly doesn't show it. Kate is a trooper!

Oh and are those some new shoes that I spy? :)

  4. Oh that's a nice surprise engagement! Just had a look at the fotos on daily mail and she seemed to be in a good mood and having fun! Especially with the bear 🐻

Don't like the peach color of the dress, but this dress shows more of the little bump. And again shorter hair! She looks good!

  8. She looks lovely! I'm surprised Kensington Palace hasn't released her due date month yet. I'm guessing they only confirm the month once she reaches a safe 12/ 13 weeks? Looking at some pictures from the daily mail, Kate is sporting a cute baby bump from quite early on in the pregnancy..maybe it's twins :P

I would not read much into the stomach size. It's her 3rd kid, and the kids have been rather close-ish in age so the stomach has no chance in holding back :P

    2. I hope it's twins! Her bump looks bigger this time :)

    3. Twins run in her family. Wouldn't that be nice. :)

      Delete
    4. You show earlier and earlier with every pregnancy, very true, trust me :) But Kiwi Gal I do think there's a chance it might be twins, given they haven't announced the month due yet, that's quite curious to me. (though they could be announcing as I type this!) Many women with multiples wait longer to announce as it's higher risk.

On another note I am glad she's come up with a better response to the "princess" question often asked by children ;)

      Delete
    5. Claudia

Someone here even suggested that line, I remember:)

      Delete
    6. Twins would be a wonderful surprise but I guess i will trust in the fact that you may show earlier with further pregnancies. I had no idea twins run in her family! Is it close family?

      Delete
    7. Sandy. Kate's paternal grandmother, Valerie, had a twin sister, Mary. (The twins worked in Britain during WWII as codebreakers. Kate visited the site where they worked and during the event got to meet a lady who knew them and had worked with them as a fellow code breaker. Neat story.)

      Delete
    8. There's a difference between fraternal twins and identical twins. Fraternal twins are genetic when they run on the mother's side of the family. Women hyperovulate (release more than one egg) and they pass that on. So it would have to come from your mother, mother's sisters, or grandmother etc.

Identical twins can happen to anyone, it's just a random fluke so to speak when one egg splits, and it's rare.

Now, the older you are the higher your risk of multiples, AND if you get pregnant immediately after coming off the birth control pill that increases your chances of multiples too :) Doctors believe that has a lot to do with seeing more twins - and many women doing quick rounds of common fertility drugs to improve their chances and get pregnant faster.

      Delete
    9. I don't know that Valerie and Mary Glassborow were identical twins. The articles I've read usually just say they were twins. I certainly wish there were more photos available of them and more information. They probably had many interesting stories to tell.
(I do think that Kate does resemble Valerie, Peter and Michael. I have not seen a resemblance to Carole, Dorothy or Ronald, although many have.)

Anett. The poor Duchess had HG. Not morning sickness. There is a big difference. With HG you throw up, up to 60 Times a day, you can’t eat or drink and you loose weight. I had it with my babies and I can tell you I would not wish on anyone. It is terrible.

  12. Oh wow! What a treat this morning! So nice to see Kate and perhaps she has the worst of it behind her. A day at a time (as they say)! Love the peach/pink and black on her. So feminine and perfect for her changing figure. And love the new shoes (I guess?) The block heels must be a bit more manageable than stilettos, but she sure manages stilettos pretty perfectly!

Looks like she also may have gotten her hair trimmed. It looks so lovely and healthy (but I have to admit I miss her side part).

Regardless, she always looks stunning and so nice to see her. I'm sure the children present will be so happy she could be there!

Kate gets by with it but I think she would look much better with a side part. Love that she has a healthy trim. So good to see her out and about and looking like she's feeling better. She is a special lady and it shows. And the dress matches the sweetness of that little baby bump.
I love the outfit. I love everything about it. My cup of tea for sure.

  17. I was anxiously looking at the Web for news of the effect of Hurricane Ophelia in Waterford and suddenly saw something about a Dancing Princess :) How lovely to see her! I could imagine (having been in similar situations) her saying at KP today "I think I can do this! I think I can go out! Oh Lordy it feels good to feel well again!" I do join with others who have said that it would be wonderful for Kate to speak up about HG.

I am currently visiting my 95 yo mil in Alberta and staying in a cabin at Waterton Lakes. The town barely survived a horrendous wildfire in early September and it has been very sobering driving through the Park--most of our beloved hiking trails are closed. The visitor's center is gone, only the stone chimney remains. Looking up on the mountains you can see the erratic path of the fire, one side completely charred, the other still as normal.

And then I get messages from my friends in Waterford about trees coming down, roofs blown off. My friends in Somerset sent photos of a yellow sky at noon. I haven't heard from my friends in Santa Rosa California at all :(

The world is in commotion. But I am so thankful for Charlotte's lovely haven about happy things and hope. Thank you Charlotte!

    3. It seems a lot of it has happened almost right after the solar eclipse that traversed the continental U.S. recently, (not to mention the recent four blood moons). The hurricanes, the California wildfires, the shooting. Just heard someone mention that and I thought about it and they might be right. Haven't seen any longitudinal charts, etc. so it is just a casual consideration.
I have no idea if there is any meteorological, cosmic, or wooby Jooby reason for it, but just off the cuff it does seem rather coincidental. Just a mention. No offense to anyone. :)

Sometimes I think that Our Mother Nature reflects what´s going on on this planet...crazy things happening everywhere...
But "of course" we have no climate change....just an invention of some stupid so-called "scientists"....
What else has to happen until we all understand that it´s "the eleventh hour" or "5 to 12", as we say in German? And I don´t mean 5 minutes, but rather 5 seconds....
Sorry about this rant, but the catastrophe news just keep coming and coming... I mean, a tropical storm in Ireland? Are you kidding me? I just hope and pray for everyone to be safe.. whether it´s in Ireland or over in California.....

So sad, all of this and my thoughts to any affected by any of these tragedies.

I was in a heavy storm in Ireland in Kerry over thirty years ago - it was very frightening with roads flooded and having to turn around and totally lost and panicked - and I was horribly ill too. I vowed that night I would never go back and so far I haven't, except once briefly, although we've been thinking about it.

And if you want odd coincidences, it's been thirty years almost to the day of the Great Storm that did such massive damage. I missed it - I'd flown out the day before and recall it being a fine day - no flight delays or anything. I could hardly believe it when I heard about it.

I´m so glad that this third pregnancy does not seem to be worse than her previous ones. Again, she seems to be over the very worst after the first trimester which is certainly a relief (somehow I already thought so last Tuesday - has already one week gone by? Unbelievable... - "she looks SO relieved to be able to be out and about again").
Only yesterday, I read a German blog on HG - and honestly, I was shocked. This poor woman had it until about 6 months - and the second pregnancy was even worse... Her treatment by hospital doctors was simply appalling. They honestly accused her of surely not wanting to have this baby - or maybe her husband was not happy about the news? I mean, can you believe this???

So, again, I´m so happy she seems over the worst and looks so happy, too....
    The dance with Paddington? PRICELESS....

    3. Eve from Germany, that attitude that HG is a psychological rather than physiological condition unfortunately was a common belief in OB/GYN in the 40's and 50's. It's persisted in some cases, and in some countries more than others, even until today. It's absolutely horrific--who wants to throw up around 2,000 times during their pregnancy like I did? I had to keep track of how much I threw up for my home health nurses, so that's where that number comes from. Believe me, if it had been a simple matter of my mind overcoming how much I threw up, I would have! I could not keep any food or water down until 34 weeks along. Women with HG used to be sent to see a psychologist, rather than being treated compassionately. I'm a part of a HG support group on Facebook, and there are women today who have miscarriages and permanent health problems because their doctors either refuse or don't know how to treat HG. It's really quite sad. I'm lucky in that my OBs knew how to help me and got me on the PICC lines/TPN/home health care that my daughter and I needed to stay alive.

    4. Eve from Germany17 October 2017 at 14:47

Thank you, Rebekah, for sharing your story! I´m a trained therapist myself and as such, I would NEVER EVER even think that HG should be treated by a psychologist. Maybe as an accompanying treatment once you feel a little bit better physically (in order to help you with the depression and the sheer (understandable!!) hopelessness you feel, sometimes even combined with suicidal thoughts (totally understandable, too!!)), but the sheer physical impact that constant vomiting has on your body, calls for nothing but a doctor - and an IV bottle, FAST, if I may add...
I thought, too, that this belief that HG is a "mental problem" was something from the last century - alas, as this woman´s story proved, it is not. Thankfully, she found a very understanding and competent OB in the end, and with her second pregnancy, the company providing the medicine had also established a "home-care-service", with a nurse coming each day, sometimes multiple times, to help you with the IV. She said this was an enormous relief, especially, as her husband had to work and her three-year-old daughter was there, as well...

I really do hope Kate will one day choose to support an HG-group - those women deserve it!

    1. florida girl. There is such a powerful and obvious bond between William, Kate and Harry. A joy to behold. Meghan seems to have very special bonds with her friends also. Like with Markus, Jessica, Sophie Trudeau, Serena Williams, Mary (her friend from college), and with Doria, etc. So it seems she is tailor made to be the perfect addition to the trio. It will be fun to watch that happen. :)

    2. It will be interesting to watch. I expect the dynamics will change. Right now, it is such an equal and supportive partnership when they show up together to do an event.

      Delete
    3. One thing that changes is that it is often easy to go from 2 to a "plus one" at events, a bit more work with four. I think you will see the four of them together at the larger family outings (simply as part of the larger family asked to attend) but do most events solely as a couple. Just as you see with the RBF currently.

      Delete
    4. I thought of that, ali. The end of the trio with the addition of Meaghan. It does make sense. Four can be a crowd.

      Delete
    5. I don't know. I think that Meghan will be added as a primary in the Princes' Trust and so as the trio has shown up for those events, so will Meghan join them. Each couple will separately do other events of course and also individually.

Being italian I also appreciate she's wearing some italian labels :)

    1. I went to the link to see about buying a pair of those myself, Laura, and they are sold out. If I had any doubts you sold me with "comfortable" so I'm on my way to other sites to find them. :)

She looks great!! It's so endearing to me how pregnancy seems to go straight to her nose and face first! Or is it just me seeing things?! ;))

  29. Like the dress a lot - and the shoes are great! So good to see her in something other than spiked heels, which would have been far too dressy for today's outing. Admire her shorter hair and am just waiting for her to appear with shoulder length hair before too long.

  30. Very pretty look today. The black velvet trim seems to need black suede shoes and purse, so I'm glad that Kate accessorized this way. The dress is somewhat retro and it suits Kate.

I'd guess that some of her engagements won't be announced to allow for cancellation if necessary. It is good that Kate felt well enough to dance with Paddington Bear.

Lovely to see Kate looking happy - and very well too. A delightful engagement - so special for the children. How lovely it would be to travel on those carriages.

No one does better at making a relatively inexpensive dress look designer-done than Kate does - ironically sometimes the expensive designer dresses don't look as polished. The pavement is slippery at Paddington - I wonder if she chose those shoes because of that or just because they're quite fashionable. I love her hair shorter.

  32. Loved her dance with Paddington,, loved the dress color, I'm so going to get a jacket with this color!! She looked very happy today, it was such a nice surprise seeing her again!!XOXO

  33. What a beautiful dress! Such a nice surprise and glad Kate was feeling better to attend. I’m still hoping for the side part with her hair!

  34. Hello to all. I can't figure out how to comment with my name attached so.... I'm Suzy from Kingwood, Texas. I think Kate looked lovely today even though the dress isn't my favorite. I like the flowers but something seems to be missing. However her baby bump makes up for it! I think she is around 17 weeks. I've looked back at some pics from George and Charlotte and considering the changes in pregnancies and the HG she has suffered, which gets worse with each pregnancy. I think she knew she was pregnant when she received the onesie and was able to hide a lot of her HG during the month of August. Considering that HG gets worse with each pregnancy and all of these other facts I am estimating her due date of April 5, 2018. I think the shoes were a great new addition to her collection and a perfect fit considering location and her condition. Love to you all! I've followed the blog for 5 years now and love the coverage!!! Kudos Charlotte!!!

Is Kingwood close to King's ranch?

    3. No, Kingwood is just north of Houston and King Ranch is down the coast line south of Corpus Christi. Its about 265 miles southwest of my location.

  35. Love the photos and I'm glad Kate was feeling well enough to attend. And, although I am not an Orla Kiely fan, I do like this dress. The color, pattern, and trim work well together.

P.S. I wonder how they explained the images to George and Charlotte? ;-)

  36. Happy that the DoC is feeling better. How great is the dancing video. We don't often get to see Catherine moving other than walking. She looks great. The dress is lovely. I know many appreciate the shorter hair style. I don't. I feel it is too pedestrian/ordinary. In the world of BRF, with so many other constraints to be confirmed to, the longer hair added personality. If I think ahead to her mother's age, I suspect that Catherine will be wearing still shorter hair. So I say, it's too soon to go shorter. But, I want her to be happy and comfortable. If she prefers shorter hair, so be it.

  40. **Tour Update**

There's been a change of plans regarding the November tour. Richard Palmer revealed William and Kate were originally scheduled to spend four or five days in Norway, Sweden and Finland. William will now tour Finland solo at the end of November and William and Kate will visit Sweden and Norway in Early 2018. Richard tweeted: "Kate's illness has forced a change of plans. I'm told there's no possibility of her going to Finland even if she is better by then."

Poor Finland - I hope they don't feel like an also ran which would be contrary to the intent of these tours. Tours with a royal lady present (not just Kate, any royal lady) always draw much more attention since most ardent royal watchers are women. (Not all of course.) It is a separate tour by William - so it won't seem so obvious perhaps.

I do wonder if they wouldn't have done better to wait on this tour for another year. It did sound like Kate was trying to fall pregnant - so a hint to the foreign office that a delay might be wise wouldn't have gone amiss. Brexit good-will is going to need to be ongoing for some time at the present pace of things.

Still for Norway, it is quid pro quo as Mette-Marit was heavily pregnant on her state visit over a decade ago. She missed a couple of engagements, but as I recall the whole family was present - so less noticeable. I can't imagine Kate touring when that far along.

I really like those Tod pumps! I LOVE how they have a grip under the toe! Smart choice by pregnant Kate! I loved this engagement. The old fashioned train, Paddington, Hugh Bonneville (Who looks much thinner in person I have to say!). My heart is F U L L.

  48. Hi! I've been reading this blog since TRH made first tour to Canada after wedding. However, I havent never commented before, because I'm quite shy and unsecure whith my english skills. Now when there is rumous that they might be coming to scandinavia, I definetly need to give a comment. I'm from Finland, and we are celebrating our 100 years of independence 6th of december this year. We do have many kind of celebrations and our president meet many world leaders and royals in this autumn. How lovely that would be if Cambridges are coming to Finland!

Thank you Charlotte your lovely blog, I've enjoyed many many many times during these several years! Maybe I will now on comment more often when Inow started :)

  49. It's wonderful to see Kate out and about. I like this look. I agree with Penny and Surfer Girl, slightly Chanel and ladylike. The color and black trim are in Kate's wheelhouse. Nice to see her wear this brand again. Remember the Brown Orla Kiely she wore during the first year of her marriage?

Those Tod's heels are great! I'm definitely jealous that Laura, Milano has a pair. The chunky heel is so on trend right now, I'm looking for heels with a similar style. I like that "jelly" bottom as leather can be so slippery in winter (I feel as though I'm getting more and more cautious every year).
