Royal Baby Due in April & November Tour Postponed Until Early 2018!

Good afternoon dear readers,

Kensington Palace made two significant announcements today regarding the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Firstly, it's the update we've been eagerly awaiting; Baby Cambridge is due in April 2018. The news confirms Kate is past 12 weeks and all is well with mother and baby. KP shared the news via Twitter with the message: "The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in early 2018".

Kensington Palace

April is already a very special month in the royal family. The Queen's birthday takes place on 21 April and William and Kate will mark their seventh wedding anniversary on 29 April 2018, they couldn't ask for a better gift than the arrival of a new baby the same month. Interestingly, when Kate was expecting Princess Charlotte, the Palace said the due month was "April". I understand both George and Charlotte arrived a little late, with the Princess born on 2 May 2015.

Royal watchers and global media will once again be firmly focused on the Lindo Wing at St. Mary's Hospital. Our first glimpse of the little prince or princess will come when William and Kate leave the hospital with their new baby. When they left with George they had a brief chat with reporters. When Charlotte was born, they returned to KP just hours after she was born, naturally the Duchess was exhausted and they headed home.

We've seen the Duchess publicly three times during her pregnancy. On 31 August, she joined William and Harry at The White Garden at Kensington Palace, to mark the 20th anniversary of Diana, Princess of Wales. Kate was beaming (she and William had quite possibly just found out she was expecting). Kate wore the Prada Printed Silk Dress with her very pretty Monica Vinader Siren Wire Earrings and L.K. Bennett Fern pumps for the appearance. Days later the Palace confirmed Kate was pregnant and suffering with Hyperemesis gravidarum.

Six weeks later, Kate returned to public duties to mark World Mental Health Day at a Buckingham Palace reception celebrating those working across the mental health sector. Kate was in good spirits on the evening. She wore the pretty iris Temperley London Eclipse Lace Collar Dress, Gianvito Rossi pumps and Kiki earrings.

And yesterday, we had a surprise appearance as Kate joined William and Harry for a Charities Forum engagement with children from organisations they support. It was a lovely event, and it was great to see Kate dancing with Paddington. William revealed "She's feeling much better". An aide added: 'The Duchess is feeling much better but she has still not fully recovered.' Of course, each pregnancy is different, but during her previous pregnancies, I believe it was around this point she began to really feel better. For Kate's third maternity look, she chose an A/W 2013 Orla Kiely Dress with new Tod's Suede pumps and Kiki Morganite earrings.

I expect we'll see Kate popping up at more engagements in the coming weeks.

The other update from the Palace concerns the postponement of William and Kate's November tour of Norway and Sweden. At the request of the Foreign Office, it was originally planned the Duke and Duchess would visit both countries and Finland at the end of November. Due to Kate's health, it has now been postponed until "Early 2018". William will now visit Finland solo next month.

Kensington Palace Twitter Feed

'The Duchess of Cambridge's continuing illness with acute morning sickness has forced the Royal Household to drop plans for her and Prince William to tour three Scandinavian countries next month. She and William had been due to spend four or five days touring Norway, Sweden, and Finland but Kensington Palace has decided she is not well enough to undertake the tour at the request of the Foreign Office.
Instead, William, 35, will make a two-day visit to Finland on November 29 and 30 and the couple have postponed their visit to Norway and Sweden until early 2018. It was not possible to postpone the trip to Finland until next year, as the main official reason for going is to celebrate Finland's centenary year as a nation. It became an independent state on December 6, 1917. Unofficially, the visits to all three countries will be seen as part of a wider effort by Britain to shore up its relationships with European countries ahead of Brexit.
Her condition has improved in the last few days, allowing her to undertake two official royal engagements in the past week, but she is still not fully recovered. It is understood that even if she is feeling much better by the time William goes to Finland next month, she has ruled out joining him there.'

I suspect the change of plan was decided very recently. Last week, royal reporter Emily Andrews was told the tour was going ahead in November, contingent upon Kate's health.

Emily Andrews

When the Duchess was expecting Princess Charlotte in December 2014, she and William spent three days in New York. Kate was at the same stage in her pregnancy as she would have been on the November tour. Perhaps she found the travelling very taxing at the time? I understand the proposed itinerary for Sweden/Norway/Finland featured a hectic schedule over five days, much busier than New York.

Kate will be heavily pregnant when the tour goes ahead in 2018.

In other updates, last Wednesday, Kate's former private secretary Rebecca Priestley appropriately received the Royal Victoria Order at Buckingham Palace from Prince William. The honour is reserved for those who have served the monarchy. Rebecca worked for the Royal family for ten years and following the royal wedding, served as Kate's right-hand woman. She has already moved on to the next phase of her career, registering her own private company RAP Consulting and Communications at the beginning of this month. The business, based in central London, will specialise in publication relations and communications activities. Rebecca declined to speak with media after the investiture.

On the fashion front, I only just got a chance to have a gander at a new collaboration between two of Kate's favourite brands. L.K. Bennett and Preen have teamed up to create L.K. Bennett's first Ready-To-Wear Collection with internationally-celebrated label Preen by Thornton Bregazzi. Design duo Justin Thornton and Thea Bregazzi drew inspiration from the floral watercolours of artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh to create the capsule collection.

Looking at the collection, the Vali Rose Silk Dress instantly stands out whilst achieving the brief of marrying a classic silhouette favoured by L.K. Bennett with the designer's vision. Romantic and feminine, with an undone quality Preen is so loved for. Rendered in 100% silk satin, it is printed with roses on a graphic red striped base. A brand archive silhouette, this wrap dress has a waterfall collar and falls to an asymmetric hem.

The print is beautiful.

The Syd Floral Print Dress is a 'very Kate' piece featuring a feminine silhouette modelled on a Preen archive piece. It has a fitted bodice, round neck, bracelet sleeves and flowing full skirt.

Two striking pieces from the collection: the Sioux Tulip Print Dress and the Shelly Black Print Dress.

More from the Telegraph:

Many of the dresses and skirts in the 15-piece collection are made from pure silk and, with prices starting at £195, the collaborators were keen to ensure that this was not just another ‘designer does cheap version of their hits for the high street’ story. Rather, the original designs aim to bring a similar level of quality, with some new, fashion-forward direction, for those who already love to shop at L.K. Bennett.
“We’ve long admired the British DNA and feminine handwriting of Preen by Thornton Bregazzi and we felt there was a natural synergy between our two brands,” explains L.K. Bennett’s brand director Lorna Perrin. “We’ve developed floral feminine prints, which are already a big part of L.K.Bennett’s heritage, with Preen’s distinct silhouettes and a more directional slant, to create an exciting contemporary collection.”

The Patti dress is a pared-back piece with a very contemporary silhouette. This style is cut from a black silk-blend velvet, with a distinctive soft lantern shape and box-pleated skirt that swishes gracefully as you walk. The embellishment on the neckline is superbly done.

Separates include the Patti Blue Wool Jumper worn with the Shelly Black Skirt. We also see the Devoto Black Silk Top.

What do you think of the collection? Are there any pieces you would like to see Kate wear?

So exciting! I'd far rather them delay the tour so Kate is feeling well enough to carry a full program during the tour.

HA - didn´t I say? When I saw her on that day in the "White Gardens" at KP, my first thought was "Someone got some VERY happy news...". I had no idea back then, of course, but it just struck me when I saw her incredibly happy face...
I am wondering, though, whether a stressful two-country-tour is a good idea during the last trimester....But obviously, her pregnancy so far goes "as planned" and she is confident that HG will not pester her that late into the pregnancy.... Let´s keep fingers crossed!
Oh, and btw: KP spoke of "A baby" - so no twins, I´m afraid, for all who were speculating (which I enjoyed reading!)....

    1. I think the itinerary will have to be altered and perhaps the trip will be a little shorter than originally planned?

    2. I remember you saying that, Eve! Yes, she did look very happy about something at The White Garden that day. No twins :( But glad to hear 'baby' & mum are well...the countdown begins!

  3. Unfortunately this does not confirm she is well past 12 weeks. If she is due at the very end of April she would be right at 12 weeks. If she is due earlier in April she would likely be closer to 15 weeks. April is a long month and the announcement if very vague. If she is due at the end of April, and went late, she could have a May baby. Too much to assume here.

That is true. But both the other times they have announced the due months after she have passed 12 weeks :)

    2. If we go by her two previous pregnancies, Kensington Palace announced her due month when she passed the 12 week mark. I believe that I the UK it’s customary to have an ultrasound at this point to confirm everything is going well. So, I think it’s safe to assume that her due date is more or less identical as with Charlotte (that time KP announced her due month on October 20th and also said she was due in April).

    3. Sofy - Wow, so many similarities this time around! Wouldn't it be funny if the new baby and Charlotte had the same birthday or birthdays back to back.

  4. I have read recently that Kate would like to have this baby at home and not at the hospital, because of the media circus that ensues. Charlotte, have you heard this and do you think it's likely?

    1. Hello Pam,

I think it will probably be the Lindo Wing again, there's no confirmation of that, but it seems likely :)

  5. I think Paddington Bear probably got a raise or a big bonus for engaging the Duchess in what might be the Kate photo of the year. Unprecedented, yeh? :)

  6. I had really wondered if she would wait until Pippa got pregnant. Regardless, it's exciting.

The Vali Rose Silk Dress look is very harsh. It would take a very unusual occasion for Catherine to wear something like that.

    2. Me too, Kiwi Gal. As I mentioned on the previous page, I am anticipating a Pippa is pregnant announcement any day now. Pippa and James have had time to adjust to each other, have played the field prior to that and should be thinking of a family sooner than later.

  8. I’m ridiculously pleased that I guessed her due month correctly, lol.
I’m also hoping she’ll opt for a home delivery this time. Frankly, the idea that a woman must look perfect and be paraded in front of media hours after giving birth makes me very uncomfortable. I really like how the Swedish royals do it. Or better yet, Queen Maxima.

A bit sad about the tour postponement and no Kate in Finland, but totally understandable. At least William isn’t doing the whole tour alone in November.

    1. Agree about having to look perfect so soon after birth is a bit much to me also. However I hope she has a hospital delivery, I know home births can be safe and wonderful but when something does go wrong it is often very very wrong and having the hospital equipment and experts at the ready for Mom or child becomes critical. I had a birth that went very wrong for the child very quickly after what appeared a normal healthy totally natural, i.e. no meds, birth in a hospital but my child stopped breathing and would have died or suffered terrible brain damage if he had not gotten quick emergency help including the use of medical equipment.

      Delete
    2. ali, I’m assuming you’re in the US. Home births in the UK and the US are a totally different kettle of fish and in Kate’s case there would be no lack of medical professionals at hand. The Queen had all four of her kids at home for example.

      Delete
    3. I hope she does not have the baby at home as I enjoy seeing them with the new baby when they leave the hospital. I think Kate looked just fine when she left with George, very natural. When they left with Charlotte, it appeared to me that she felt more pressure to look good, dressier dress and shoes, more styled hair, and it was as if she deliberately held the baby's blanket long to cover her mid-section. But I really thought she looked way more beautiful the first time when it seemed she didn't try so hard. I know it must be pressure to look good, but in my opinion she doesn't need to try, she will look great no matter what.

    4. ali, consider you fortunately lucky. It is very unselfish of you to share the story because it can help other women to weigh out the choice between hospital and home birth. Child birth these days can be unpredictable, and is generally a team work at the hospital with all the alerting methods completed by technological tools. Previous generations managed home delivery safely, and even these days labor at any urgent situations are safely delivered luckily. All things considered, it is better to have the delivery in a hospital no matter what special access Kate will have.

  10. I am really surprised and disappointed that Kate pulled out of the tour. Goes to show you never know what's going on behind the scenes. She looked completely at ease dancing - I was barfing on her behalf. No one would guess she's still suffering HG from that outing, that's for sure. I hope she feels better enough to be out and about soon.

I'm neither surprised nor disappointed. There is a big difference doing a local event here and there with time to recuperate between and an out of town/country multiple days in a row trip. Hardly the same thing.

    2. Yes, I always think how grueling these royal tours are...so much travel and so many events crammed in. Very exhausting for someone in the earlier stages of pregnancy and especially with her history. Much better to play it safe, and if they do their Norway/Sweden tour in January she will be just at the stage of pregnancy where you feel the best.

    2. After William returns home from Finland and after Meghan is done filming Suits, then an engagement announcement from Harry and Meghan. Then, after the baby's birth in April and May for Kate to recover, then June would be a great time for Harry and Meghan's wedding. That would be my plan.

I would be very surprised at a November engagement announcement - it is the month of the queen and Philip's seventieth anniversary and nothing must detract from that. (I've seen surprise announcements made at other people's events and it was always agreed it was tasteless.) I believe the queen may the determination not to lay a wreath in part so she can stand with Philip.

December is a possibility for a spring wedding but Kate's pregnancy makes that unlikely. Royals don't have long engagements and they don't get married in June. It's a very busy royal month including the Garter, sometimes, as this year, the opening of Parliament and royal Ascot - the latter at most importance to the queen.

If there is to be a wedding, mid to late July would be a possibility. That's when Lady Helen Windsor was married at Windsor - the most likely English venue.

It is also the month of Zara Philip's wedding (and a Scottish wedding is a possibility at Canongate Kirk or even possibly another Edinburgh venue, it removes many of the religious objections conservatives - such as the queen herself - will have about divorce.) Sarah Armstrong-Jones also chose that month.

I personally think autumn is the earliest likely date if a wedding there is to be.

    4. H & M could always surprise everyone and decide on a January wedding. Forego the engagement and just say they are getting married in a month and that's that. Kind of like Lady Edith in Downton. I wonder if they are gearing up to become totally non-traditional. Wouldn't that be fun? Have a winter wedding (or even Valentine's.)

  13. Kate would have known she was pregnant well before the end of August, probably by the time they were at Balmoral, or even at the end of July when they visited Belgium. I thought Kate did not look well then, though she had been radiant earlier in July in Germany. Anyway, my next grandchild is due in March, and Kate's baby in April. The old custom continues. :-)

  14. I have a holiday, a family wedding and a graduation planned in April 2018 so the palace needs to be clear about the exact due date. Lol I'm just joking!

What better anniversary present could they ask for? :) I'm really glad that Kate has passed the 12 week mark safely and I hope that she fully recovers from HG soon!

    Love Avee in SA

PS: Fingers crossed for an engagement announcement from Harry and Meghan before the year end!

  15. How very exciting!! Kate looks amazing, but I could see how being 6 months pregnant will be so much better as it is usually an energetic time for many pregnant women. She will need a proper pregnancy wardrobe, oh won't that be fun!!

    1. I have a faint recollection of the palace saying that Charlotte was due in late April. I remember some discussion on this blog about how that was good they narrowed it down so that the media wouldn't be camped out for the entire month. So maybe this baby is due more towards the beginning of the month where the point of the month wasn't specified. It would be fun if you shared a birthday with the baby though.

  19. I suspect she's due early April as her timeline appears to coencide with mine. I'm due 6 April, found out early August and have been suffering from HG since.

  20. Thank you for the post. One important fact about Kate's condition (hyperemesis gravid arum - HG) is that the symptoms can get progressively worse with each pregnancy. It is possible that her symptoms are more severe now than during her pregnancies with George or Charlotte.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I also think Kate is due in early to mid April. It seems she might have planned to get pregnant in early-mid July knowing she would have August “off”. The announcement was a week earlier, I believe.
