I think the flowers on it are orange, or an orangish red, and it's got white and blue, so it's a version of red, white and blue. So, perfect to honor the Dutch." Caren - "Kate's dress is a great opportunity for sartorial diplomacy. I choose the Viktor & Rolf Rose Plisse dress. It's a Dutch designer that features a gorgeous English rose on the bodice. The "House of Orange" color would be a nice touch, but I would invert the colors. Her dress would be in cream, with a hint of orange peeking through on the skirt. Her shoes and bag are simple and sparkly. Champagne glitter "Lance" shoes and "Ellipse" bag from Jimmy Choo. Zora from Prague - "I love velvet and I love this dress. The colour could be the soft, warm dark blue instead of black!" Zora fell in love with the Marchesa Embellished Tulle-Trimmed Velvet Gown. It's described as: "Made from plush velvet, it's cut to flatteringly hug your curves and has a tulle-trimmed boat neckline that's intricately embellished with scores of lustrous faux pearls and light-catching crystals. We love how the train beautifully skims the floor behind you with every step."
Miol Mor - Miol Mor shared her look via her blog with the following description: "The dress as shown is based on an Elie Saab gown from the Fall Couture 2018 collection and the altered bodice I'm imagining (and tried to sketch out) picks up on the sleeves of the dark teal Jenny Packham dress the Duchess wore,e.g., in New York, and the draped gauzy 'collar' of the green Jenny Packham BAFTA2018 dress.The neckline alteration is roughly outlined; alas, sleeves symmetry and a more or less radical trimming of the waist-hedge I leave to your imagination as those alterations go beyond this tyro's photo manipulation capabilities ...). I expect Jenny Packham to create the gown for October and I dearly hope she adopts a color scheme similar to the lovely burnished orange fading into silvery pinkish purple of the Elie Saab. My fantasy dress also would go fabulously with Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot Tiara; Collingwood Pearl Drop Earrings; a Diamond Collet Necklace (example pictured); HM's Diamond Quatrefoil Bracelet; a Pearl and Diamond Cocktail Ring (vintage); Shoes and Clutch by Jimmy Choo. In fact, I think those jewels are far more likely to be worn by the Duchess on the occasion than the emeralds. However, it seems high time for the Greville Emerald Tiara made by Boucheron to reemerge from the vaults and spread its sparkle - which is why the pearls lost out in this running for the finals. Thus, my grabby little hands snatched it, the Delhi Durbar Necklace, Earrings and Bracelet from HM, and a vintage Cabochon Emerald and Diamond Cluster Ring from the net, to go with the big cabochon emerald of the tiara. Last but not least, and not distract from the glorious emeralds of the jewels, the clutch and shoes were relegated to a platinum shade."

Marci in Utah - "I don't know why I love House of Worth so much when it's so outdated, but still. Here's a gown I would love to see made for Kate, and since it's the Dutch royals, it could be made in blue and white to suggest Delft, or orange and cream". The gown is styled with the Lotus Flower Tiara, the Queen's South African Necklace and Bracelet and Queen Mary's Diamond Collet earrings.
Anonymous - A navy velvet Talbot Runhof gown is styled with the Cambridge Lovers Knot Tiara, the King Khalid Diamond necklace, the Queen's Diamond Pear drop earrings, the Quatrefoil bracelet and Kate's Oscar de la Renta Cabrina pumps.
Siddhii - Siddhii would love to see the return of the black velvet strapless McQueen gown Kate wore for the 2011 Sun Military Awards with the same Mouawad jewels. It would be accessorised with a sheer black capelet.
Cveta - A bespoke Bateau Neck Floral Print Naeem Khan Gown with shorter sleeves is teamed with Queen Victoria's Emerald and Diamond Tiara, Christian Louboutin pumps and the earrings and bracelet Kate wore to a BAFTA event in 2011. The look is completed with an updo.

Wow, all of the submissions have been lovely. I have been particularly fond of the several burnt-orange dresses suggested and hope Kate might go with one of those. I'll look forward to seeing what she decides on! When is the state dinner again? Also, what is the time frame for Kate to resume engagements? Thank you, Charlotte, as always for your hard work.

DeleteThe State Visit is the 23-24 October. Regarding engagements, the Palace said Kate would resume duties in the autumn. I expect we'll hear something any day now :)

You are right, Rebecca. I looked at my design and thought, "a bit cluttered." I think I would leave off the diamond bracelet, at least. I'm not sure there is a really good tiara for this look; maybe it would be better for a non-tiara occasion. We'll see what Mr. Leo says, since he is known to like the gown. :-)

It's still finding favour from Leo - he also liked Zora's and Smiley's and Molly Claire's choices. I don't think he minds clutter or he couldn't live with Julia! The big ballgowns didn't appeal so much to him this time, but he chose the white Packham last time - so the man is nothing if not inconsistent.
DeleteI liked very much the contrast between the floral Erdem - one of his prettiest (Erdem at his best is quite wonderful) and the Dubai necklace but might agree on leaving off the bracelet because of the shape of the sleeves. That Choo bag is a find though!

My favorite gown in this group, maybe in all of the approximately 112 designs, is Lady Germany's Zac Posen Off-the-Shoulder Trumpet Gown. I would accessorize it with the Dubai sapphires I suggested for my own effort two gowns up and yes, Queen Alexandra's tiara. Purposely, I did not choose a navy blue gown this time, since I have done so twice in the past, but this one is too good to pass up! It would suit Kate splendidly.
ReplyDeleteSnowdrop's combination of the Lover's Knot tiara with the Pear Shaped Fringe necklace is new and very nice. They reflect each other's design beautifully. I also like Unknown's Off-The-Shoulder Silk Catherine Regehr blue floral gown with Diana's sapphire and pearl jewels. I would need to see Kate in that combination to decide whether it is more Kate or more Diana, but it is lovely.
There are so many truly princessy designs here! I can only choose a few that stood out for me.

I honestly dont think Kate would ever choose a yellow ball gown (mine is the carolina herrerra), I just want her to branch out and stop being so conservative! sometimes she dresses like an old lady, and not a young beautiful vibrant duchess. I wish she would step out in something vibrant and youthful.

ReplyDeletePam from Boston - This is an absolutely lovely gown - I'm beyond having favourites - too many gorgeous gowns but this would be a top contender. I love the raised flowers and subtle hint of orange.
Lili - A very sophisticated choice that would set off an order's ribbon should Kate receive it. Lovely starry sparkle. I like the use of dark blue since black is unlikely for a state banquet.
Julie from North Carolina -I like the very subtle hint of orange. I plan a separate comment on tiaras but the Mary fringe is proving popular. Love the use of garnets here - Kate's birthstone.
Silvia - The royal blue Packham is a winning and worthy choice for a repeat. Many people, myself included, think sapphires look wonderful on Kate and she could bring new life to that tiara.
Diana - when I first saw a version of that gown in white - I thought it meant for a state banquet because the diamante shoulders would set off a tiara. Love it in cerise too, proving to be a popular choice for Kate - I agree.
Andrea from New York - Lhuilliar is a designer I really like and this would be perfect for a banquet with Maxima attending - a very wearable shape but the feathers make it daring. I actually could see Kate wearing this - to a premiere also where the feathers would show more.
Casey - That's a dazzling floral that would look great with an order's ribbon. Herrera really know how to design gowns suitable for royalty.
Bluefire. This is lovely -that raspberry shade would be perfect on Kate, and the classic lines of the gown and the flow of the cape would work very well for a state banquet. I love the choice of Kiki designs in some of my favourite gems - Morganite and Kunzite.
Helena GA - Raspberry is proving a popular shade because it would look great on Kate. I'd hoped to see a Talbot Runoff gown in Germany - it would be a great choice here too. It has a lovely flow.
Jo of Virginia - This gown has proved popular - with good reason - it has a very modern feel and yet the sleeves give it an artistic timeless quality - the mix of sapphires and rubies would be an exciting choice - glad the loop necklace is finding favour.
Rebecca - I love Temperley and have a great love of iridescence too so this lovely almond hued gown really appeals to me. It would catch the light beautifully. The choice of the Duchess of Gloucester earrings is interesting. I'd like to see the pearl choker repeated too.
Sunny - there seems to be a unity of feeling on a classical raspberry gown for Kate - I agree - this one is a little sexier but still very elegant as we expect from Lhuillier. Rubies often pick up that pink-raspberry shade so I think the brooch would be a lovely choice. The Teck tiara remains a possibility - a tiara ready for a revival.
Anne from Texas - Of all the thoughtful and discerning choices - yours has to be at the top of the list - such a beautiful and Commonwealth appropriate gown. Sophie has worn a gown she was given so I would think it very possible for Kate - and so appropriate being made of wool - not just for Australia - Charles is strongly promoting the wool industry in Britain - this would be a huge boost - and such a tribute to Australia. I like the choice of the queen's 18th birthday bracelet - bracelets need comments almost of their own - so many interesting ones.
Amy A - that wine-coloured velvet would be lovely for autumn - and would be such an elegant choice, yet glamourous too with that daring back.

DeleteOh my goodness that floral fabric on that last Naeem Khan dress is simply breathtaking! So many untapped designers for Kate to choose from. She does tend to stick with Jenny P though because the gowns are always so perfect for her. I do love that Liv Alba chose the Jenny P teal for a re-wear. I would love to see that again with some beautiful aqua marine jewels to go with it!

ReplyDeleteJen - I've been so amazed by both the originality and the knowledge of stylists. Claes Iversen would be a fascinating choice - I believe his gowns have been worn by Mary as well as Maxima. I think Kate actually would look better than Maxima with the ruffles - and the soft orange-apricot would be good on her.
Sunny - this Viktor& Rolf gown has proved popular for a reason - it's very much in Kate's style - similar in shape to the Chinese banquet gown - yet very contemporary - picking up the Tudor rose and a lovely tribute to both noted Dutch designers and the House of Orange. The centre rose of the Teck would pick up the rose on the dress perfectly - hoping for that tiara's return.
Mod Meeting Planner - You're living up to your screen name - that bold yellow is the colour of the moment form what I've read - Kate has shown she can wear it with her Wimbledon dress. The skirt of the gown would be lovely for the entry to the banquet I like the choice of the wedding gift bracelet.
Zora from Prague - this gown is amazing - it truly picks up the theme of Dutch art = in this case the snowy collars we see in so many paintings - set against a dark gown. The collar is just magnificent with the pearls - and it would be lovely in blue.
Miol Mor - Finally a Saab - I was wondering. I think the burnished orange fading to rose would be lovely - I love how you have tried to make the gown bespoke - something I attempted in description in the past. The emeralds would really dazzle and I have to say should the Greville emerald tiara appear - hopefully it still exists - no one will even know Maxima is there.
Priscilla from California - I think this would be lovely in green - a good colour choice on Kate with her eyes - glad to see you've used her emerald earrings.
Hannah - I too was thinking of Kate's visit to the Mauritshuts museum and this dress captures the colours of those famous still-life paintings with the dark hue and subtle floral underneath - it would be a marvellous choice.
Smiley - This captures the idea of a beaded white dress for a state banquet but in a very modern and glamourous way - by a designer who did well by Kate in India. It would show off Kate's lovely figure.
Anon 183 - This beautiful blue gown is very Kate and has proved very popular - it would be lovely with aquamarines. You're quite right - it would be very hard to outshine Maxima - I think Kate can be daring without feeling she's casting anyone in the shade.
Sun - I've been delighted to see Paolo Sebastian chosen as a designer - I love lavender and am pleased to see one of the queen's amethysts put into use - the idea of jewels in the hair is lovely - it would be beautiful in a chignon.
Molly Claire - I've inadvertently awakened Leo so must stop soon - but he loves your choice - it's one of his favourites and I agree - the rose design picks up the centre rose in the Teck.
Rachel - I really love the choice of this Lhuillier gown - it would show off Kate's shoulders but most of all it would look lovely with Diana's sapphire choker which I think should reappear - this would be the perfect platform for it - yet the gown is very much in Kate's style - the look would be her own.
Patricia I - This would be a lovely tribute to the Netherlands floral industry - it is a very pretty Erdem that would look wonderful with the sapphire loop necklace - I've always thought that would be perfect on Kate - and am glad it's being picked up by a number of stylists here.
PS - I love the idea of picking up the white often worn at state banquets with a dramatic modern gown - it would be a good style on Kate and the sapphires a lovely accent.

ReplyDeleteLady Germany - I love the elegant simplicity of the black gown for that great wall of diamonds - the Alexandra kokoshnik. The diamond rose brooch is striking with it - and the bag picks up the theme.
Sarah USA - The soft colour of that Marchesa gown would be beautiful on Kate and the '3-D flowers make it most striking. The queen's fringe necklace is proving a popular choice for a loan - it would be lovely to see.
Stella Milan - that peach hue is a subtle nod to orange and that delicate gown would make your choice of diamonds truly sparkle - a great choice for the Cartier tiara.
Anonymous - I completely agree on a bespoke gown by Taminiau - he's a designer who deserves international attention and it would be a great tribute for Kate to choose one of his gowns. Should there be a return state visit to the Netherlands - I hope she does if it doesn't happen this time. I understand there was an exhibit of his gowns - I would have liked to see it. This floral gown would be an excellent choice on Kate - a wonderful skirt.
Darla Humphries - Several of these gowns have reminded me of Dutch artists of various periods - this gown reminds me of the fascinating Dutch artist Escher who was one of the favourites of my youth - with the way the material swirls from sleeve, to peplum to train - it would be so striking in a bronze orange.
Shantel - We know Maxima will do something striking - she delights in amazing us, so I don't think Kate should feel any need to hold back - and with what she wore for the Spanish visit, I don't think she will. The blue and gold dress would be a lovely choice - always fun to speculate on her wearing a Saab and it would look great with the sash of a Dutch order. The full skirt makes it seem very much meant for a State Banquet.
Grace H - This Viktor & Rolf gown has proved popular for good reason - it's modern yet seems very wearable by Kate. I've often thought to paraphase a song from the Sound of Music - how do we solve a problem and find a gown to go with the queen's ruby rose tiara - which seems meant to go with her white dresses and little else. This gown would work for it - the stylized rose of the gown would make that tiara much less twee - it's an inspired choice.
Alex from Oz - As long as that gown was lined, it would be magnificent on Kate - a glorious shade of blue that would suit her. I like your choice of the queen's chandelier demi-parure with it and what is truly striking is how the swirls in this dress pick up the swirls in the Cartier tiara - I love it when jewels and gowns work together this way.
Meredith from Boston - This lovely timeless gown has proved very popular with good reason - but I love the unique idea of having it done with blue - even in blue velvet perhaps - The scalloped court pumps pick up the design and your choice of diamonds is excellent.

ReplyDeleteVikki - This could be an expensive designer dress if done in silk - it looks like one - and would be lovely for a state banquet - the peach shade would be a good subtle nod to orange for Kate - one that would be very becoming on her. Again the Cartier tiara really balances a full-skirted gown and the swirls pick up the design of the dress's bodice.
Anonymous - My favourite sapphire tiara ever makes an appearance - the Barbarini - if only someone would gift it to the royal family - it deserves to be seen and who better than Kate to wear it - I love how it looks in the photoshop - it's meant for her. This group of selections really has tiara dreams of mine included. The orange Stella McCartney is inspired too - glad one of her gowns was chosen - a great choice.
Audrey Mango - once again an inspired pairing for that difficult Tudor rose ruby tiara - with the Viktor & Rolf gown. Maxima does have a playfulness to her - and I hope that will motivate Kate to have a little fun too - she has the artistic eye to do it well.
Nicole Mueller - I'm ending this group with how I began - Diamonds against a gorgeous dark gown - this one with lovely sparkling. I agree on Oscar de la Renta and again the Cartier balances a full skirt.

Stella Milan - that peach Temperley London dress is a dream! So glittery & delicate. I especially love the jewels you chose to go with the dress. The Teck Crescent Tiara & Queen Mary’s Floret earrings need to come out of the vaults :)
Special mention goes to the Viktor & Rolf Rose Plisse dress. Such a gorgeous orange shade & I love the rose detail on the bodice. It would be such an interesting dress for Kate to wear.

ReplyDeleteUnknown - As I believe I said before, this lovely blue and white gown is a favourite of mine and particularly appropriate as it picks up the colours of Delft tiles - I must add it would be perfect for Kate's debut of the sapphire choker as it is very different from how Diana wore it.
S- I'm so glad someone chose this Taminiau - a favourite of mine I'd seen even before we knew about the Dutch visit. How exciting it would be to see it on Kate! Love the Teck earrings with it.
Liv Alba - For repeats the teal might be my choice.Kate's emeralds work brilliantly with it.
Annika Boston - This royal blue gown is perfect for a state banquet and with the deep neckline would be perfect for the sapphire loop necklace - which I've long felt Kate's meant to wear. The white trim on the dress would accent the diamonds.
Snowdrop - Flowerbomb is my favourite perfume so this dress speaks to me - love the raised flowers and it would be ideal for the Lover's Knot and for the queen's fringe necklace.
Emma from N.C. I know where you get your discerning eye - this dress is fabulous. I love it both in the original shades - the dark against the flowers, and your choice of blue. All your details are perfect - love the idea of Kate wearing the wheat brooches in her hair, the pearl choker, and the rose brooch for holding that order ribbon we all want to see.
Robin from CA - A look very, very close to my heart - I'm a huge fan of Lhuilliar, this dress is so lovely - the white with scattered flowers so right for the Dutch visit - but most exciting the idea of the revival of the Nizam of Hyderabad tiara - it could happen - the main elements still exist and I want it to happen - because it would be so right for Kate.

I don't want to see Kate in the POW feather yet because it means our queen is gone. So why not the sapphire pendant Diana wore on that same diamond necklace? No one here has chosen that yet - she loved it and it was beautiful on her and would be beautiful on Kate and with this dress.
Elle - that choice of a burnt orange Packham with the dark belt is something I can see Kate in and a favourite of my husband's as well. It reminds me of chocolate and orange a favourite sweet of mine. The bag is perfect with it. I love the use of the pearl choker - are we meant to have a choice of earrings? I'd choose the pearl ones myself although the ruby would be interesting.
Marci in Utah - As a lover of vintage, I would never say Worth is outdated - classic is the word that comes to mind. Kate could wear that dress today as is although I love your colour ideas too - the blue and white for Delft particularly appeals to me. I'd like to see Kate wear the South African necklace as long as the length was adjusted - it would work well with the lotus.
Anonymous - Talbot Runhof (hopefully this time no auto-correct!) does lovely gowns and this sophisticated and elegant blue velvet with the cape effect would be perfect for Kate and set off a grand collection of diamonds including the King Khalid necklace which I think a very possible loan as Diana wore it and the quatrefoil bracelet a favourite already-loan of mine.
Siddhii - That black velvet was such a great moment for Kate's it's time to see it return with her hair up for a new sophisticated look - love the idea of the cape with it - and I'd like to have a better look at the Mouawad necklace - glad someone used it.
Cveta - a vibrant gown that reminds me of van Gogh. It would be amazing to see Victoria's emerald tiara with it. Time for me to mount my box on Speaker's Corner and protest against giving away historic jewels like this tiara to cadet branches of the family. It means at best it's likely to end up in a museum - at worst sold eventually. I like to see jewels worn and wish there would be an in lieu of tax break for giving historic jewels back to the crown - where they could be worn - as long as they are protected from individual monarch's whims. I feel jewels look their best worn - they grow musty in museums - but am looking forward to seeing this tiara at Kensington Palace and shall think of your gown with it.
I hadn't heard of Talbot Runhof before and just stumbled on this dress, but I think the fabric would photograph really well and would look dramatic and gorgeous on a fall night! I love the other TR dresses that others found too.

I suspected that was what you meant Flora. It's hard to tell from the photos. I've been surprised more stylists over the years haven't suggested that necklace because Diana loved it, it went well with her ring, and would suit Kate very well.

I agree Robin - I think that Omen set might suit Meghan very well - she is more petite than Kate and it would suit her proportions - Diana loved it by all accounts. She had quite interesting tastes when it came to jewellery - I noted a site on it below.

The Lotus - pipped the Lover's Knot at the post in spite of a strong finish for the latter - 24 stylists by my count chose it - besides being beautiful - it looks good with so many gowns.
The Lover's Knot - this beautiful sentimental favourite got 21 selections.
The Cartier Wedding Tiara - 13 stylists chose this one - a strong push for its return - it looks very good with certain gowns especially with full skirts and when the diamante picks up the tiara swirl design. (You can tell from my language I'm no tiara expert!)
The Queen Mary's Fringe - 10 Stylists chose this - and since it isn't worn by the queen, it gives a big push that this should be a loan to Kate. There doesn't seem to be any immediate use for it as a wedding tiara unless the York girls use it which I think unlikely - so it would be nice to see it put in an appearance. Combined with the Queen Alexandra Kokoshnik popularity - and the popularity of the Queen's fringe necklace, quite a lot of people, myself included, think the fringe style would be a strong look on Kate.
The Queen Alexandra Kokoshnik took fifth place as a tie - with 5 stylists choosing this glittering wall of diamonds the queen hasn't used much recently - although there's a strong chance Camilla might lay claim to it.
The tie for fifth place with 5 stylists choosing it by my count was the queen's sapphire tiara. Not a huge favourite of mine but it would certainly look better on Kate than Camilla so I think it a possibility as a loan. Kate loves blue and looks wonderful in sapphires, and is likely to have Diana's superb pieces at her disposal - the Saudi demi-parure and the sapphire choker. Many very much including myself think the loop sapphire necklace, never a good choice for the queen and almost never worn would be ideal for Kate - especially if its length were restored. There's also popular support for the queen to loan Kate the sapphire demi-parure her father bought for her - which would be in line with previous loans.
On possible loaned tiaras - unfortunately unlike the Swedish and Luxembourg royal families, there hasn't been a strong tradition for mixed loaning, which I think a shame, both because it allows us to see tiaras on different ladies and because it serves to keep jewels in the main line whilst allowing lower-down royals to use them. One stylist hoped to see Camilla loan her Greville - that alas seems unlikely. Three stylists would like to see Kate in the aquamarine tiara loaned to Sophie who probably does really need it. This speaks of quite a few of us thinking aquamarines would look excellent on Kate - interesting the problematic aquamarine tiara of the queen's wasn't chosen by anyone - suggesting perhaps a remake back to its original look would be better - and not wrong historically. Three stylists would like to see the Queen Mary bandeau shared between Kate and Meghan. One stylist chose the Ogilvy tiara - a lovely choice if an unlikely loan because Princess Alexandra is likely to attend the banquet and that tiara - part of a wedding gift from her husband is I believe her only tiara. It would be lovely if it would return to the crown someday though - as there is no good floral tiaras.
Amongst the queen's other tiaras - one optimist chose the Girls of Great Britain. I actually would love to see that loaned as I think against probable opinion that's it made a charming younger woman's tiara and has become rather aged only being used by the queen -so I'd rather see it skip Camilla. Two stylists with the same beautiful Viktor & Rolf dress tackled the challenge of the ruby rose tiara - not a tiara you can wear with anything...
I'll do another comment for the balance - the 'we can dream' tiaras.
I love that honeycomb tiara but I think we have to give Camilla that one -- she is one of the few people who could truly pull it off. The woman can wear big bling. :)

Having made a completely unofficial tiara choice survey, I'm continuing with the 'We can dream' tiara choices which includes my own choices.
ReplyDeleteThe Delhi Durbar got two stylists attention. It's a magnificent piece that Camilla has only worn once almost fourteen years ago. Potential controversy may be the reason but it really didn't suit her either. Since Maxima isn't afraid to go big, this would be a good time for its reappearance on Kate - but I think we are in dreamland.
Likewise, the Oriental circlet got three stylists choosing it - but presents the problem of the fact it's supposed to be limited to queens and queen consorts. The queen allowed her mother (a former queen) to retain it and has only worn it once herself. The fact it hasn't been loaned to Camilla who got the majority of the queen's mum's jewels - makes me think the queen is keeping to that restriction - but we never know.
Very long shot tiaras long missing but still lurking possibly - include the Strathmore, chosen by two stylists - it's condition something of a mystery. The Teck - technically loaned to Camilla but never worn and not really her style - which was chosen by three stylists - it picks up floral designs very well. I was the only person to choose the Queen Mary sapphire bandeau - last seen on Princess Margaret - it is uncertain whether it still exists. Finally, we have the Greville emerald tiara - here we may well be slipping into tiara fantasy land as we don't know that it even exists - I don't believe any royal lady has ever worn it. But tiaras do reemerge - we've seen it happen.
We are in pure dreamland with a few tiaras here. The Barbarini is my favourite of sapphire tiaras. It would be lovely on Kate and the family needs a good sapphire tiara but it was sold - it's present whereabouts unknown to the best of my knowledge. The Victoria Emerald tiara - presently on display at Kensington Palace - should belong to the mainline royal family - it's one of those crazy decisions that it went to the cadet line of the Fife's. (No offense to the Fife's who just gave their magnificent tiara to the V & A as part of a tax deal. I have muddled feelings on the issues of taxes but I prefer to see tiaras worn, not displayed. The choice of the Fife's to give over that tiara rather than the emerald one is interesting but I'm not sure I see much hope of it returning to the main line.
The Nizam we sadly know was dismantled - but since the brooches still exist, I cherish hope beyond hopes that it could be remade - there might be some loose diamonds in the vaults to recreate the motifs around the brooches. Julia would do it in an instance but whether there is any will for the way amongst the royals is unknown. However, since there will be masses of brooches in the future - and far fewer tiaras - it makes sense.
Finally, there's royalfan's magnificent Tiffany yellow diamond choice. We need a really, really, rich donor...I fear the days of givers like the Lady Greville are gone and even Middle East donors are problematic - although that hasn't stopped Camilla and Kate has received gifts too - so we never know,but we can always dream...
I, too, recognize the diplomatic difficulties of gifts from the Middle East but they sure did gift some magnificent jewels in the past. I can only imagine what else would be waiting in the wings had they not become so difficult!

Thanks to those who commented that they liked my choice! I wish I'd had time to put together more of a complete look, with jewelry, bag and shoes, but I'm not good with accessories, especially jewelry (I keep it extremely simple for myself in fear of overdoing it), so it would have taken me a long time to research all the options out there and try to figure out what would look good with the gown. I do think now that I should have chosen the Cartier Halo tiara instead of the Lotus flower - it's simpler.
ReplyDeleteI loved your choice of dress and whilst it's fun to choose the accessories if you have time, it's not necessary. I've been rushing madly to get work done so we can go on holiday and missed adding a bracelet myself - as well as countless errors in posts - some quite embarrassing.
DeleteWhile I love the Cartier, I think your first choice of the lotus was instinctive. More than size, the motifs of the tiara and how they work with dresses are important - and the shaping of the lotus picks up the shape of the flowers on the gown. This is not a scientific explanation by any means! But hopefully the idea is there. Some of the other gowns had 'swirl' diamante or beading and they set off the Cartier. So your choice was wise.
The choice of the Lotus Tiara is perfect to my eye. The only other accessory I would maybe add are Kate's chandelier earrings with just the right amount of sparkle to compliment what look to be crystals around the neckline. The dress is stunning on its own!

ReplyDeleteMy next-favorite I think came from the first post, the dark gown with the embroidered flowers - in velvet? (I didn't go back and look it up). I love the feel of Dutch floral paintings in that gown.
I also liked the idea of Kate wearing the blue wool that was designed for her by the young woman in Australia. With sapphires, wouldn't that be a killer? She could wear that to any evening event (even minus tiara) and I'd be happy.
I am guessing a full skirt is better for a banquet than a form-fitting gown, since she has to be able to eat something of several courses. So while I would love to see her appear at another evening event in some of these very slim gowns, I prefer fuller skirts for the banquet. And they do look very princessy.
Again, I so enjoyed everyone else's choices! Beautiful. Thank you Charlotte, for continuing this tradition.
Oh yes, I wanted to add my votes for re-wearing the blue Jenny Packham gown from the India trip (my vote is minus the wrap); the black velvet strapless gown (loved the idea of the sheer black fluttery jacket); and the teal Jenny Packham from the Olympics event. I would be very happy to see any or all of those three again!

ReplyDeleteAbsolutely beautiful! Have to say that all three groups definitely know how to dress a princess....what talent by everybody. I am having trouble picking favorites as my list for all groups keep growing. I was intrigued by how everybody paired their gowns with just the right accessories, jewelry and tiara!!
ReplyDeleteI was curious to see what were the popular choices by the entrants so I did a quick little poll. The tiaras were as follows: 1) Lotus Flower tiara was the top choice, so it appears that many want to see it make an appearance and it would look great on Kate; 2) Cambridge Lover's Knot, of course; 3) Fringe Tiara, which in the beginning I thought this would win the popular vote, but it is a close third; 4) the Cartier Halo was fourth, which would be very nice to see Kate wear again. I see Julia did a tiara count and I am sure hers is much more accurate than mine, but my third and fourth are switched; but at least the top four tiaras are the same.
The most popular color for a gown was 1) Dark Blue/Medium Blue (Kate's color!); 2) Corals/Oranges were the second most popular which would be a great sartorial nod to the Netherlands; 3) Florals were a very close third choice which was interesting and a great possible sartorial choice alternative; with 4) Whites/Ivory colored dresses coming in fourth. Black gowns, Pale Blue/Lavender gowns, and Silver/Platinum gowns were very close in the 5th, 6th and 7th places.
As for designers, well it is probably no surprise that 1) Jenny Packham lead the group quite handily. It is obvious that JP has a feminine quality that appeals to many and certainly Kate's style! In 2) spot is Alexander McQueen with 3) Marchesa a very close third place. Roland Mouret, Temperley and Monique L'Huillier all tied for fourth place (love Roland Mouret on Kate always). Viktor Rolf, Zac Posen, Jan Taminiau, and Reem Acra were some new designers that were chosen by several entrants, and it would be wonderful to see Kate choose any one of these designers. Zac Posen has a very classically elegant look that would suit Kate quite well.
Didn't even try to poll the jewelry since the options are just endless and all choices beautiful! A personal favorite of mine would the the Queen's Vanguard Rose Brooch...simply elegant. A great job by all and a wonderful tradition to continue Charlotte. cc
I did start to try to do jewellery - only necklaces and bracelets but am without my list - and can't look back easily, so this is even more approximate than my tiara poll may have been - you could be correct on numbers.
DeleteUndoubtedly because of the number of blue gowns, there was a strong wish for sapphires - I believe five stylists used the Dubai loop necklace - and the earrings were also used separately. (I believe they were made from the extra links - which should probably be put back on if Kate used the necklace as I hope she will.) Another five I believe - doing this from memory - chose the queen's sapphire demi-parure given to her by her father.
Three of us chose the Diana sapphire choker. I believe three others chose the Japanese pearl choker which has already been loaned to Kate.
Diamond necklaces were rather split - there were two or three wishing a fringe necklace but this was split I believe with two stylists using the City of London fringe - and one the pear shaped fringe. I may be muddling fringe necklaces. Three people chose the collet necklace Kate has already been loaned - and two the King Khalid necklace which was loaned to Diana. One stylist chose the Nizam of Hyderabad which Kate has already been loaned and one stylist the South African necklace demi-parure. Interestingly, the King Faisal necklace - also loaned to Diana - was not used by any stylist this time, nor was the sapphire tassel - although the earrings were used.
One stylist chose the queen's aquamarine set - but not the tiara.
On emeralds besides one stylist using Kate's own necklace - and another the earrings, there were two stylists who used the very grand Dehli Durbar necklace.
Rubies figured less - one stylist used the ruby bandeau Kate wore last time and one wished to see a return of Kate's ruby necklace.
Bracelets are harder to tally because a number of stylists envisioned Kate wearing more than one - as she has done previously. The wedding gift bracelet by far was used the most though with the quatrefoil (my personal favourite) and the Mary bar choker bracelet also being used quite a lot. At least one stylist used the baguette and brilliant bracelet and one or two - I'm forgetting numbers now used the chain link bracelet.
Two interesting bracelet choices were one use of the diamond Indian bangles - and two uses of the quintet bracelets - one styling a use of all of them. The modern sapphire bracelet got a couple of uses as I recall - and I'm thinking there was another sapphire bracelet of the queen's used - I'm not remembering the name.
Kate's own diamond bracelet was used at least a couple of times, I think - and Diana's pearl bracelet that Kate wore in Germany as I recall. One stylist also chose a wider pearl bracelet worn by Diana with an aquamarine clasp. I seem to remember reading that there was speculation that aquamarine was later used for the ring Meghan wore - I don't know whether that's true or or even reasonable.
There were several charming new necklaces used - again I scratched a list but don't have it with me so I can't give them immediate credit - but I remember a morganite necklace. The most opulent choice was a new pearl and diamond necklace. There were some lovely bracelets as well - William should have no trouble with Christmas gifts.
I thought the choice of jewels were outstanding - there was a real effort to use jewels already in the family - which makes sense. I'm sorry not to be more precise here but we're away this weekend. I can't access the first two posts - so I'm not using any names for fear of getting some wrong. Sorry this is so vague.
Julia, I always love reading your comments and am particularly enjoying your analysis of these entries. Also, I would agree about the choice of dark blue gowns and the association with the sapphires. While I didn't count the jewelry I do recall sapphires being a very popular choice. In fact, the fifth choice in tiaras (by my count) was the Sapphire tiara (can't recall the right name). I would also agree with you about the outstanding choices in jewelry by the entrants...it is obvious that many here want to see Kate wear more of it and not just for the variety of it, but also for the sentiment and meaning behind the jewels. After seeing all these choices, I definitely feel the need to educate myself more on the royal jewelry. It is all so interesting. cc
DeleteRoyal jewellery can be a great deal of fun and rather addictive! I couldn't believe I was rattling off names of the queen's jewels from my feeble memory, thanks to From her Majesty's Jewel Vault and the Court Jeweller as well as Charlotte's brilliant work. Even though I've been something of a royal watcher for decades - a few years ago, I couldn't have named them or known their stories - there were just a few books.
DeleteWhilst the polish of the site isn't as good as many - there is also a useful resource about Diana's jewels - called simply that http://www.dianasjewels.net/ which makes for interesting reading and fun speculating what might be used by Kate and Meghan.
I love the sentiment behind jewels - why I'm so keen on protecting them and mourn what has been lost, sometimes quite unnecessarily. The stylists here used such considered thought both in their choices from the queen and Diana's collections and in picking out new pieces - both from Kate's favourite Kiki and new designers.
If you dare to invest, there is a stunning book on the Queen's Diamonds. I wish he would do one on the queen's brooches. As a brooch wearer, I was delighted to several used in styling here and hope Kate comes to love them.
As an example of something lost - I forgot that one stylist wish for the Poltimore tiara - which was sold by Princess Margaret's family. It had been purchased by Margaret so it's not surprising that happened but it was a lovely tiara and still a shame. Today, having so much known on the Net is both good and bad - it's really not possible for the royal family to invest in jewels as in the past - without huge critiquing - although Charles has bought heavily for Camilla. But it does mean the eyes of thoughtful royalists are out there too - perhaps preventing indiscretions of the past.

Great write-up CeCe USA - I enjoyed your analysis of colours and designers - and of course a marvellous job by everyone - especially Charlotte - who didn't choose a design of her own this time. I remember she chose Cather Regehr in the past - a lovely gown - like the blue and white this time. Charlotte really did an amazing job here - with so many submissions.
Realise I forgot one necklace the Diana Saudi gift - a slim chain of diamonds holding a pendant - either the POW - now apparently given to Camilla or the sapphire that was part of the gift.
ReplyDeleteOn lengthening the Dubai sapphire necklace, I would like to keep the pretty earrings, but make an extender from the bracelet, which is rather clunky. Then thenecklace could be flexible for different wearers.

DeleteKate has beautiful shoulders but she is also broad-shouldered - an athletic build - so it is important that necklaces be the correct length to look right. Having the correct neckline for a necklace is important too. Unless of course, You're Maxima - she tends to throw it all on regardless!
One of the advantages of the Dubai necklace, for my purposes here, is that it is set in gold. In addition to its swirling design, it has a certain warmth. Much as I like the quatrefoil bracelet, I am having second thoughts about using it, because it is cold compared to the warm colors in the gown, the clutch, and the Dubai jewels.

After viewing all of the fabulous gowns selected during this exercise, I find myself hoping that Kate does not go the route of having a gown custom designed for her; rather there are so many designer gowns shown here that would be perfect! But I have a feeling that even if not a custom gown, that we will not see Kate in any of these selections. But we can dream! I only hope she doesn’t go with something like that dull pale rose pink lace gown that she wore to a previous state dinner.
ReplyDeleteDuchess or no Duchess, these posts have been such a breathtaking delight, I've often times made little gasps at the beauty of so many of the suggestions. Some were so spot-on in terms of the Duchess's preferences, others pushed the Duchess's style envelope (so to speak), and others just had fun coming up with Princess-wear! I do wish the Duchess, now in her late 30s, would take some more daring fashion risks that she won't be able to 5 to 10 years from now. On another note, a lot of the suggestions readers made seemed absolutely perfect for the Duchess of Sussex! DeleteMaggie knows her internet friends are rallying behind her. Her friend told her when she woke up once and got a big smile.
DeleteMaggie got out of surgery, and the surgeons are optimistic. Yesterday, they weren't sure if she would be able to, and there were a couple of complications, but she came through. Now we hope she recovers well.

I wish Catherine could chose the gorgeous Carolina Herrera Strapless embroidered floral’print suggested by Casey , the colours, the designe, the material, the general allure of this gown make it absolutely stunning .... I am afraid that Catherine would not favour a strapless dress, not sure the protocole allow it and not sure she would dare look so ....sexy ! However’ if it was me , I would’ pair it with diamonds only , the blue shade is too special to match with saphirs, which would completely get lost in all that blue ....
Amongst all the others, I choose the Burgundy Verdin Bias Cut Velvet and Silk Trumpet Gown by AmyA , very elegant and chic without too much glam , and quite fitting to Catherine’s silhouette and choices . I do hope she does not go into veils and embroideries and choose sleek allure designs and materials .

I'm not certain strapless could be worn to a state banquet but that dress would suit a little bolero made for it in the same fabric as Diana wore with that stunning Edelstein white and gold gown. The material is scrumptious.
DeleteAnd there are always premieres and such events where strapless is permissible.
I still remember when Diana wore that strapless black Emmanuel gown and some commentator chastised her for 'looking as if she were sitting in a hip bath'!
Strapless does remain an issue for when someone is sitting a great deal - for my eyes - a gown with an interesting bodice works very well for state banquets for that reason. But many brides wear strapless - although usually with some covering if the wedding is at church.
So many beautiful dresses. In fact I'm flabbergasted by the huge market there seems to be for phenomenally expensive evening gowns. Whoever buys them? There are only so many princesses and film stars in the world....

Some of the gowns chosen are so beautiful that I found myself hoping longingly that Kate is reading here for advice. 😁 Others, I must admit, I thought "oh no, can you imagine the bad press Kate would get if she wore that?" Obviously, I'll keep the particulars to myself. It is, after all, just different people's tastes. All in all, there are so many beautiful choices that I wish she had occasion to wear a fabulous gown once a week!

Overall many are breath taking.
Sonja from Bavaria has discovered a very fitting gown for the hello tiara in my opinion). That was her wedding tiara; if she will wear it with white dress, it will be interesting ( it will make a nice ten years anniversary reappearance). If the same dress will be in a different color, still that very dress especially the top themes well with the same tiara ( IMHO).
Each entry in 1.2, and 3 has something going for it. Those commenters who took the time to comment on each entry must have enjoyed as they look and write on details.

ReplyDeleteFirst off, i just want to admire your articles and the way you present your findings on the blog.
I am a boy but I've always been interested in the British Royal Family and also other foreign Royal families. I've always admired the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their family.
The way in which they conduct themselves with decorum with the ups and downs that they are prone to face being in this unusual occupation as the King of Norway had said in his speech in the Sweden-Norway tour earlier in the year.
I digress ( I could on and on), I have a query. Okay maybe more of a question if possible to be answered?
I know you must busy, but while compiling what the duchess might wear to the State Banquet, i was wondering if you possibly do a blog or something similar, on what the Duchess might wear on the welcome ceremony for the King and Queen of the Netherlands, ( fingers crossed the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge participate formally in the welcome ceremony and in other engagements in the State Visit).
I would really appreciate it
Once again, i would like to say that i always try to read your blogs and articles among other bloggers that follow the life of the Duchess and her family including other members of the Royal Family, and other Foreign Royal families.
P.S. Its important also to note how
symbolically the Duchess will take note of with regard to the symbols like the flag color and and other national symbols like the flower for the Netherlands and so on.
Maybe in part three you can cover some of this symbolism as well.
I really appreciate the effort you take in the blogs and so on.
