Kate's Autumn Return, Mental Health at Work & L.K. Bennett Autumn/Winter Looks!

Good evening!

September is firmly upon us and the autumn schedule has commenced for the Royal family with engagements in full swing once again. On the Cambridge front, Prince George returned to Thomas's Battersea for a new school year last week and Princess Charlotte has returned to Willcocks Nursery School. William resumed duties last Thursday (we'll be chatting more about that later on). There's been no news whatsoever on Kate's return. We often see engagements announced about two weeks in advance, so it's looking unlikely we'll see the Duchess this month. A surprise appearance is certainly possible, however, royal reporters Emily Andrews and Chris Ship both understand it will be October before we see her return.

Whilst nothing has been announced, there are several events over the course of the coming months I believe we'll see Kate attending. Once again, it's important to stress none of the following have been confirmed. This is merely a cursory overview of very strong possibilities. The first of these is the Global Summit on Mental Health Culture Change which will take place in London from 10-13 October. The London Summit gathers together key thought leaders, government officials, stakeholders, policy makers and change agents to focus exclusively on removing cultural biases that affect how we think about, talk about and address emotional well-being and mental health. The Royal Foundation is involved in the event, meaning we can expect to see the Cambridges participating. The event concludes on the 13 October with a special concert at the London Palladium.

The first day of the Summit, 10 October, coincides with World Mental Health Day - traditionally a day Kate has appearances.

On Friday, 12 October, Princess Eugenie will marry Jack Brooksbank at St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle.

One of the most glamorous events of the year will take place during a State visit to the UK by King Willem Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands from 23-24 October. We can expect to see senior members of the Royal family attending a white-tie State banquet in honour of the visit. As you will remember, we spent a good portion of August enjoying your fabulous submissions for Kate's gowns and jewels for the night.

Kate visited King Willem-Alexander during her first solo overseas visit to the Netherlands in the 2016.

The Royal British Legion hosts the annual Festival of Remembrance at the Royal Albert Hall on 10 November to commemorate all those who have lost their lives in conflicts. The following day, 11 November, is Remembrance Sunday. We'll see Kate join royals at the Cenotaph.

That night, Koncert Sto Lat, a special concert at the Royal Albert Hall, will celebrate 100 years of Poland’s return to the Map of Europe – Poland’s Independence Day. The unique concert will celebrate the centenary with some of the most poignant and well-known Polish songs and music of the period. Poland’s finest artists will be singing not only their iconic contemporary songs but also songs from the 'Solidarity' era. Reader Marta kindly shared information that respected Polish media outlets have reported the Cambridges will be in attendance.

The Queen is to throw a party for hundreds of family members and friends to mark Prince Charles' 70th birthday on 14 November. Rebecca English confirms the bash will be private, however, we can expect to see arrival/departure snaps and hopefully a portrait of the family released afterwards.

In terms of Kate's solo work, the Royal Foundation's annual report revealed plans to collaborate with the Maternal Mental Health Alliance this year:

'Towards the end of 2018 we will launch initiatives designed to reduce the stigma of maternal mental health difficulties and improve related knowledge and understanding. We will collaborate with the Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA) to support new initiatives and work with other organisations within the MMHA for this purpose.'

A tweet from Gert's Royals reminded me the Duchess became the first Royal Patron of the Victoria & Albert Museum in March. An engagement should almost certainly be in the planning before the end of the year.

Several of you have been in touch asking about Heads Together and the direction the campaign will take next. Yesterday, Prince William travelled to Bristol to launch a new initiative, Mental Health at Work, a free portal filled with information for employers and employees in the UK.

Curated by mental health charity Mind, and funded by the Royal Foundation as part of their Heads Together campaign, the website offers valuable information, toolkits, podcasts and other resources to improve mental health in the workplace. "Whether you work with 10 people, 10,000 people or just yourself, paying attention to mental health in the workplace has never been more important. Mental Health at Work is here to help you find the information and resources you need."

Half of us have experienced a mental health problem in our current job and 1 in 4 of us are struggling with these problems in silence.

'Former air ambulance pilot Prince William spoke candidly on Tuesday about absorbing the pain and suffering he witnessed on the job. "I took a lot home without realizing it," he said at a mental health event in Bristol. "You see [so] many sad things every day that you think life is like that." Speaking about his time in the emergency services, he added, "You’re always dealing with despair and sadness and injury. The attrition builds up and you never really have the opportunity to offload anything if you’re not careful."
Sitting around a table in Yurt Lush café 120 miles west of London, William noted the particular toll on first responders. "You’re human and a lot of people forget the battles, you have shut it off to do the job — but ultimately something pierces the armor." He noted that he was "stunned" that just 2 percent of people feel comfortable talking to their workplace human resources department about mental health.'

During his speech William said: "By taking mental health seriously, you can build a better team. You can be a better boss, and you can be a better colleague. And my hope is that Mental Health At Work can help you do it."

The ITV video below also shared a brief interview with Kirk. When Kirk's daughter was diagnosed with an eating disorder, his world fell apart. Support from his team at work helped him navigate through this difficult time and he's now committed to empowering his colleagues to talk about mental health and ask for help if they need it.

Speaking about meeting Kirk, William said: "He's exactly the sort of person we should be looking up to."

Just 2% of people feel comfortable talking to workplace HR about mental health. If you would like to find out more about Mental Health at Work please click here.

In other news, William attended his first event as patron of the Royal African Society earlier this evening. During a speech he revealed he will make a working visit to Namibia, Tanzania and Kenya later this month. "Like so many others, I am deeply saddened by the numbers of elephant, rhino and pangolin who have been illegally slaughtered for their tusks, horns and scales. But the illegal wildlife trade also has a devastating human impact. Too many brave rangers are tragically killed each year by poachers. Communities see their tourist livelihoods threatened. And the proceeds of the illegal wildlife trade fund broader criminal networks and threaten security. This is why I am committed to doing what I can to help end this terrible, global crime. This will be a particular focus of my upcoming visit to Africa, and of course the conference on the illegal wildlife trade taking place here in London in October."

For the final portion of today's post, we're taking a look at the latest autumn/winter arrivals from one of Kate's favourite retailers, L.K. Bennett. Elegant skirt suits, floral midi dresses, fitted sheaths and stylish accessories offer an abundance of possibilities for the Duchess. The forest-green Effie dress with a tuxedo neckline and the elegant red Hollie dress are chic options for the coming season.

The marble red, floral-print Julisa dress, the abstract blossom print Yadira dress and the midnight blue star print Filia dress.

The Elspeth patterned dress is crafted in stylish jacquard and cinches in at the waist for a flattering silhouette.

The soft wool Audry Green Coat and the French blue Verlee Coat.

The Charl Navy Cream Tweed coat is described: "Transition the seasons in style with the Charl multi-navy-cream coat. Crafted from breathable cotton-blend, it features raw-hem details and navy contrast pockets and hemline, while the heritage-inspired tweed works perfectly with tailored separates."

The effortlessly chic Cesilia Tweed Jacket and Skirt.

The Sonya blue silk blouse and the Estra jersey top.

UPDATE: William and Kate received Mr Miguel Head at Kensington Palace upon relinquishing his appointment as Private Secretary to William earlier this afternoon. Miguel had been a member of the Royal Household for a decade. The Palace said: "His Royal Highness feels incredibly lucky to have benefited from Miguel’s advice and support over the last decade. He has been an outstanding Press Secretary and has been central to the decisions that have guided the establishment of The Duke's office. He has also been a valued advisor during an important period in His Royal Highness's life. He wishes Miguel all the very best for the future." Below, Mr Head with Kate's former private secretary Rebecca Deacon.

And that's a wrap! Hope you're all having a great week!

  1. I think October will be a busy month for the Cambridges- with the Sussexes abroad on the royal roadshow after Eugenie's wedding, Kate and William will have to step up on the Mental Health front. Charlotte pointed out the state visit and the run-up to Prince Charles' birthday- both events that the Cambridges will feature in, I'm sure. With such a busy month, it's no wonder Kate wanted to settle in with Louis and ensure her other kiddos get into the school groove smoothly. Can't wait to see her out and about again. Thanks Charlotte for the great post as always.

Barbara U.S. I liked the forest-green Effie dress and the French-blue Verlee coat, also. The patterns seem a little old for Kate. I thought the tweed suit looked like something Kate would wear, so fingers crossed!

    3. The tweed suit is amazing!! Perfect for Kate! I'm ready to see her out and about again!

    4. Tweed suit has her name written all over it. Hopefully, as she comes back from maternity leave she will update her silhouette in a more sophisticated style.

    5. I agree with you Barbara U.S. The sheath sihouette shows her off at her best in my opinion. My all time favorite is the blue sheath she wore upon arrival in Canada with the two children and William in hand. I wish her stylist would encourage her more in that professional direction and away from oversize prints.

  5. I vote for the elegant red Hollie sheath, followed by the Cesilia Tweed Jacket and Skirt. Prints are not to my liking, look like they belong on a much older person. It will be nice to see Kate back in action.
I was moved by William’s remarks at the mental health event in Bristol.

    1. Tedi, I agree Kate would look great in the red Hollie sheath and especially the Cesilia Tweed Jacket and Skirt. With Kate's sometimes penchant for wearing printed, willowy dresses, would not be surprised if she didn't pick one from these shown...and if I HAD to pick one it would be the Elspeth, only a little shorter.

I don't think William gets the credit he deserves at times, but I have always liked to hear him speak especially at the mental health events...his comments were moving and very relatable. It does appear he has stepped up his appearances, and can't wait to see Kate as she has certainly been missed. cc

  8. I am going through serious withdrawals and cannot wait for Kate to be back. It's like the Great Kate Wait all over again!

I cannot commend William, Kate and Harry enough for their Mental Health initiatives. I love that it was Kate that saw mental health as the common connection with the areas that they were addressing separately. When they pushed the children mental health initiatives, all I could think was -- where were all of these in the US when I was growing up? We need an adult version! And now they have the Mental Health at Work - this is truly great and I for one am going to be looking this up. I am a Payroll Manager and some of the things I have to put up with, honestly, I am surprised I haven't jumped out a window yet!

  9. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge as well as other senior royals also appear in the HBO "Queen of the World" on October 1. I notice it is listed for Meghan's activities.

    1. Hello,

According to Rebecca English we won't see an interview from Kate.

This is from ITV's official press release:

"Queen of the World [2x60] features behind-the-scenes moments with the Sovereign and other members of the Royal Family, including the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the Princess Royal, and the Countess of Wessex."

    2. That's odd! The HBO release says the following: "Queen of the World features behind-the-scenes moments with The Queen and other members of the Royal Family, including Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall; Princess Anne; Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge; Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex; and the Countess of Wessex."
      SOURCE: https://www.hbo.com/content/hboweb/en/documentaries/queen-of-the-world/about.html

    3. I'm guessing it might feature footage from various Commonwealth tours and engagements over the years. Perhaps one of William and Kate's with previously unseen footage? The reporters were told Kate didn't film an interview for it. We'll know for sure soon, I believe part one airs on the 25th :)

      Delete
    4. That ITV press release that was quoted was from August 31. HBO subsequently announced purchasing the US rights to air the series. It was filmed by ITV and put together over a year's time. Not sure if that includes post-production time. With such a vast amount of material to be organised, I doubt anything new was filmed for at least several months. There are old film clips but apparently some newer footage as well. The underlying theme is the Queen's turning over to the younger generation. It debuts in the US October 1 on HBO. I suppose the September 25th date is for the UK viewing. Otherwise, I don't know. I have not seen that date in any of the newer information. I speculate that it may work like Downton Abby-first shown in UK, then US. Although the HBO information specified October 1 was the "debut" of the series.
I don't recall filming time for Kate's various film appearances being listed as a part of her diary here. Will this be a new type of listing? I understand film appearances have been listed. All information since August 31 indicates William and Catherine will appear in this series. Catherine had that Commonwealth fashion engagement that Sophie and one of the Yorks attended. Of course, their tours to Canada, Australia and other Commonwealth countries. Perhaps that sort of thing.
Interesting date for ITV to have announced this series. Amongst all the Diana memorials.

    5. Considering HBO has listed Camilla, Catherine and Meghan as divorced from their current husbands I’m taking anything they say with a bucket of salt.

      Delete
    6. Hello,

Of course, they are listed on Kate's Calendar and Kate's Upcoming Engagements on the sidebar like 'The Queen at 90'.

I didn't add this documentary because I was told Kate wasn't interviewed for it.

ITV issued a new press release on Wednesday 12 Sept:

"This new two-part ITV series offers a unique insight into Her Majesty The Queen’s role as a figure on the global stage and the baton she is passing to the younger members of the Royal Family as they continue to build the Commonwealth connection.

Filmed over more than a year with privileged access to The Queen, her family, her staff and her residences, this landmark series tells the story of how the Commonwealth has been a central focus and passion throughout Her Majesty’s life.

Queen of the World features behind-the-scenes moments with the Sovereign and other members of the Royal Family, including the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Cambridge, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, the Princess Royal, and the Countess of Wessex."

    7. Ah! That explains it. I wasn't able to pull up that September 12 reference, although I searched the ITV Press site. I did find several versions of the August release, including one from The Independent, which did not include the Countess of Wessex. I guess we will have to wait and see who besides the Queen is featured in the series. Was any information given about the air date? I could not find one, except for the HBO information.
By the way, Nicholas Kent was listed as Executive Producer. Any relation, do you think, to the royal cousins? It certainly might explain the unusual access these productions from Oxford Films have had.

      Delete
    8. According to Harper's Bazaar, Kate appears in the series, part one, along with Sophie Wessex. The list given by ITV alluded to the fact that they did not include all royals who appear in the series. A quick bit of research could have uncovered the fact that Kate does indeed appear and thus avoided all the stories, comments, and speculation about her supposed nonappearance. For example,"She was on maternity leave." From there, I think one can imagine where the discussion went. Since Kate had appearances right up to a month before Louis's birth, including the Commonwealth one,and since the series has been in production for a year, that is an obviously faulty explanation of a statement that was in error to begin with. Kate does appear in the series.
I surmised that Sophie's appearance would be from the Commonwealth fashion event in my 18:04 comment. My point is--if Sophie was mentioned Kate should have been since she was the primary royal host. They both were shown at the Fashion Week Commonwealth event in February. This discrepancy in internet promotion is what prompted the magazine article. Not any "me too" Kate PR effort to somehow compensate for Meghan's engagement, as one commenter suggested. Hopefully, in the interest of fairness, this comment will also be published here.
Since Kate's appearance was from February and Meghan's was likely from not much later than March or April, as her wedding was in May, I really can't see why Kate's appearance was not mentioned in the DK diary. Neither was actually a recent filming, as far as I can tell.
I am making a point of this example of media meddling in perception as it happens all the time and few ever own up to it with an admission of error to correct a wrong impression. The response is more likely to bluster through and attempt to back up the original error. I suspect some sources were well-aware of the gossip reaction that leaving Kate off would initiate. Click bait. If anyone sees a forum (other than Harpers) that has admitted to this error in reporting, I'd like to see it. HBO was correct to include Kate. That inclusion should have been noted. ITV left her name off for some reason. The Independent left Sophie's name off. Leaving Kate off was quite a glaring omission, as both the "D&D of S. were listed but only William was listed for the Cambridges. anons 01:13, 18:04, 02:19

PS Does anyone know if the Kent who executive produced this series for ITV and Oxford productions, among other recent royal films--is he related to the Kent cousins?

      Delete
    9. Hello,

There is footage from the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange and Sophie is interviewed. I think Kate wasn't mentioned because she's not interviewed. All the royals listed in the press release were interviewed. I don't think there's any conspiracy from ITV :)

A little bit off the topic of fashion, but it is RUOK day today (at least in Australia), so I thought I would walk the talk a bit.... Can I say that because of their work with mental health, the Cambridges have really inspired me to encourage positive and more open communication in my workplace. I recently did a short talk to employees about this topic and I have been asked to come back to do it for more staff, I am really excited about that. My workplace offers anonymous counselling either via a phone call or face to face, whatever the employee prefers, which is fantastic. I am lucky to have a wonderful and supportive boss who openly states that she uses this counselling service herself. Recently there has been negative talk between staff members, and I felt so supported when I was able to talk anonymously about it, no judgement. I really feel so much stronger now, and able to spread positivity rather than huddle away from negativity. I know this is put simply, but I just wanted to get the message out there. There are many amazing places and websites to get help, so don't struggle alone. Here is one that I really like: https://www.ruok.org.au

    1. Well done, Royal Watcher! What you said and did is very encouraging. Your boss sounds like a fair person. I know several people who would be terrified if their boss found out about their mental health issues. My friend deliberately hid the fact that she was attending counselling, for fear of losing her job. The stigma around mental health is quite strong here.
      Thanks for sharing and inspiration!

    3. I had a nervous collapse about 30 years ago at the office. I was sitting discussing things with my boss and he commended me on how I had handled a tricky personnel matter with our staff. And I started to cry. I had been feeling apathetic and numb for months before that, after my sister died, going through the motions at work and trying to put a brave face on home for my 13 year old daughter (I was a single parent.) But I felt like I should be the one who was dead and not her because she had such joy in life and fought so hard to live. I felt guilty for being alive. All of a sudden, that day, it was like a dam burst. My boss was astonished and said "What's wrong, what did I say?" All I could think of was to say, "I am sick, I have been sick awhile and I need help."I was able to get out of the office without anyone seeing me and I walked across the campus to our health center. I won't go into details but it was a wake-up call for me and I think for people around me who had always thought I had it all together. I got the help I needed but probably hurried back to work sooner than I ought to have--I stayed at home a week, sleeping 12 hours a day, only getting up when my daughter was home from school. I was heavily medicated on tricyclics and one day my boss said, "You are still going a terrific job but I can tell it is taking a heck of a lot out of you. Are you sure you should be working?" But work was my touchstone, my way of thinking that I WAS still alive and that I WAS going to come out of this horrible deadness inside. And I told him that and, bless him, he understood, everyone in the office understood and I got nothing but support. I was very blessed, especially 30 years ago.

  12. I can’t wait for Kate to be back on the circuit. I have really missed her. People are often quick to complain and not so quick to give recognition but I think William should really be commended on upping his game. His solo engagements doesn’t get lots of publicity but he has really be out and about. And in a way that allows people to meet their future king with very little fan fair.
It would be interesting to see the engagement tallies at the end of the year. While he is still not at Charles/Anne’s level I expect a huge increase in comparison with previous years.

    1. Thank-you, Gaby, for calling attention to this and Charlotte for following up on it with research and a post that included quotes from reputable sources, including the Royal Foundation Report, Heads Together reports, and Kate's speeches. Given those sources, I see no reason to doubt that Kate has been working on this project. I am sure Catherine Quinn has brought her vast practical experience to the project but Kate has vision and lifetime commitment to see it through as well as the name recognition to draw supporters and contributors.

This project is also one that allows her to work from home at times, as many working mothers do. Other than the usual telephone, email, and internet work that can be done from home, KP is ideally suited for conferences, meetings, and receptions that are a part of organisation and fund-raising for projects. All this can be done with her little ones nearby. William has been here, there, and everywhere; having one parent based at home would give would smooth the way for Kate to guide her own children's development while helping to improve the futures of other children. I have no doubt that she will continue to be seen at important family and State occasions as well as tours abroad and day trips in the UK.
The Royal Foundation focus also brings home the fact that counting numbers of photos and public engagements only does not produce a clear and honest view of efforts from the royal family. I think it was wise to release this information while the Sussexes are relatively quiet. Good coordination on the part of KP BP CH, although I am surprised that this news was not broken via KP Twitter but via Palace leak, apparently.

  23. I am reading that several sources are reporting that Kate will have her first solo charity campaign. If being correctly reported the campaign will shine the spot light on disadvantaged children in the UK. I believe this to be a much needed and wonderful opportunity for Kate to bring attention to issues not only in the UK but to awaken peoples across the world in regard to the needs of children. It is long overdue for her to step out away from the umbrella and put her individual seal on projects dear to her heart much the same as Meghan has done prior to entry into the RF. Hopefully, what I have been reading is accurate reporting as it will be greatly beneficial much the same as the attention to mental health has been as a team effort previously.

  24. In retrospect as I read comments I am thinking that I sincerely hope Charlotte you know that this blog that I assume started as a simple fashion interest has turned into so much more. Thank you for providing a platform for people to share and educate so many of us on a daily basis in sharing thoughts and concerns that span so much more then simple trends in fashion which we all love. The wonderful power of the written word allows people to know they are not alone and we all share in the same thoughts and feelings on many issues.

  25. Can’t wait to see this space more active again. Hopefully Kate will return soon and with impressive numbers. The magazines are already starting to build up a new round of the Kate vs. Meghan drama which is absolutely unnecessary and frankly just stupid (their sympathies change weekly anyway).
I’m not fond of the shown clothes. Nothing stands out and it feels like she already owns everyone of those pieces just in a different colour. I think she could smash it by wearing tons of daytime repeats (I definitely would kill to get hands on her wardrobe) and then splurge for the big events and bring out the big guns. Especially at a engagement with Maxima. It is just not easy to be noticed next to her when she goes all out.
Making the mental health of children her main focus is a wonderful idea but I hope she will take on more diverse topics and charities and support them by visiting. Mental health can still be her main focus. There are so many areas that need support and in the end they all are important for a successful, peaceful, healthy and happy society. I think for her and Wiliam this is incredibly important. They are (hopefully) the future king and queen and therefore should be a figure for all people in the kingdom and not concentrate on one topic too much. Right now it seems it is all mental health and African wildlife (for Wiliam) and sometimes art (for Kate). The people in the UK will demand more, even with a streamlined monarchy and therefore less engagements in numbers. The Queen has set a huge example and raised and fulfilled expectations that will be hard to overcome.

    1. I like some of the options above and can see Catherine looking fabulous in them. I agree it would be good to add a few different causes especially around physical activity and health. mental health is interlinked with physical health and good nutrition. I would like to see Catherine out an about with the Queen
