Anchors Aweigh: The Cambridges Take To The Sea For The King's Cup Regatta

It was a day of family fun and sailing as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge hosted the inaugural King's Cup regatta in the seaport town of Cowes on the Isle of Wight. The event was held in support of eight of their charitable causes.

Kate looked tanned with long wavy hair upon arrival.

It marks the Cambridges' first public engagement since they attended the Wimbledon final last month. Since then, they have been on summer break and enjoyed a fortnight on the paradise island of Mustique, with the Middletons, where they celebrated Prince George's 6th birthday. We've seen changes in William and Kate's summer schedule in recent years, mostly due to the school calendar. This summer also saw William and Harry vastly reduce their polo commitments. The polo games are a very effective means of raising significant sums. With the princes stepping back from their 'white trousers' appearances we're going to see other means of raising much needed funds such as today's regatta. The King's Cup promises to be an annual means of supporting charities closest to their hearts.

The regatta was originally due to take place tomorrow, however due to adverse weather conditions it was rescheduled for today. Kensington Palace said: "The eight boats taking part in The King’s Cup will each represent one of the charities that are being supported this year by Their Royal Highnesses. The Duke and Duchess are strong advocates for sport, and have undertaken work both in the UK and overseas to highlight the positive impact that sport can have on the individual and within local communities. The Duchess in particular champions how the benefits of sport, nature and the outdoors can impact childhood development, and lead to improved physical and mental wellbeing for all. Their Royal Highnesses hope that The King’s Cup will become an annual event, bringing greater awareness to the wider benefits of sport, whist also raising support and funds for the causes that the Duke and Duchess support."

The Palace continued: "The King’s Cup, of which Land Rover is Presenting Partner, will take place ahead of the inaugural Cowes SailGP and Cowes Week. Members of the public are invited to watch the race from the SailGP Race Village, which will be free to access and include a 500-seater grandstand. Footage from the race will play on large screens with live commentary, and there will be a number of activities for families to enjoy along the waterfront."

The event saw the Duke and Duchess go head to head as skippers of state of the art Fast 40 boats. William sailed on behalf of his patronage Child Bereavement UK and Kate in support of her early years initiative with the Royal Foundation.

The other six boats sailed for Kate's patronages Action on Addiction, the Anna Freud Centre, Place2Be and William's charities Centrepoint, the London Air Ambulance Charity 30th Anniversary Campaign, and Tusk.

Six well-known faces joined the royal couple to represent the other six charities. Footballer Fara Williams competed on behalf of Centrepoint. Television presenter and historian Dan Snow joined on behalf of London’s Air Ambulance Charity; and adventurer Bear Grylls represented Tusk. For Kate's charities, comedian John Bishop supported Place2Be, radio presenter Katie Thistleton was there for Place2Be and professional rower Helen Glover represented the Anna Freud Centre. Below, the Duke and Duchess with the ambassadors.

There was a very special surprise in store...

...George and Charlotte were spotted watching the action with Michael and Carole Middleton. According to reporter Catherine Wylie, Louis was also there. George was in a nautical H&M t-shirt and a striking Captain's hat.

Charlotte has changed so much over the past year, the four-year-old is preparing to start a new adventure at Thomas's Battersea next month.

Caroline notes Charlotte wore a blue stripe Ralph Lauren dress.

A classic George expression. Doesn't this bring you back to the 2014 Australia/New Zealand tour?

Mike and Carole were joined by a group of parents and other children on the boat.

An overview shared by London's Air Ambulance Charity.

The day of sailing was organised with the Royal Yacht Squadron. The clubhouse is located in Cowes Castle and has been at the heart of sailing for over two centuries. Her Majesty is patron of the RYS and Prince Philip is the club's Admiral.

Country Life has a fascinating piece with facts on the club's maritime history:

  • The Royal Yacht Squadron was established on June 1, 1815, at the Thatched House Tavern in St James’s, London W1. Originally named The Yacht Club, it comprised 42 gentlemen members, who agreed to meet twice a year to discuss their mutual interest over dinner.
  • At first, it was mandatory to own a vessel ‘not under 10 tons’. This was changed to ‘gentlemen actively interested in yachting’ when lightweight construction became more commonplace
  • Members’ yachts are awarded the suffix RYS. In 1829, the Admiralty issued a warrant for them to fly what is now the Navy’s White Ensign rather than the merchant Red Ensign displayed by most other UK-registered vessels.
  • The Yacht Club became ‘Royal’ when the Prince Regent, a member, became George IV in 1820; 13 years later, it was renamed The Royal Yacht Squadron by command of William IV.

Step back almost a century to 1922 to watch footage of King George V (William and Harry's great-great-grandfather) and Queen Mary at the Royal Cowes Regatta.

There were two races in total. In the first, William finished third and Kate seventh. In the second race Kate's boat was disqualified for starting too early, meaning they came last. William's team took third joint place in the end. The Tusk team led by Bear Grylls claimed first place in the end.

Emily Nash shared a video of George and Charlotte with their parents before the prizegiving ceremony.

There's a funny moment where Kate tells Charlotte to wave and she pokes her tongue out.

Kate, Carole and Catherine Quinn quickly encouraged another try at the wave instead :)

More from Hello's! Emily Nash:

The winning team were awarded The King’s Cup, a historic trophy first presented by King George V at Cowes’ Royal Yacht Squadron in 1920. Just two years before the video above was filmed.

Below, The King is pictured here at Cowes’ Royal Yacht Squadron in 1924.

Bear Grylls was thrilled to accept the trophy on behalf of Tusk.

As the skipper of the boat which came last, Kate received a wooden spoon. She was a great sport and had a good laugh with William about it.

More from The Telegraph:

'There was competition on the high seas, a comical prize-giving, and one very realistic pirate. In short: everything needed for a fun family day out. So when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge went to work to raise a million pounds for charity in their inaugural King’s Cup sailing race, it was just as well Prince George and Princess Charlotte were on hand to make it a day to remember.
As the Duchess shook her head, compère Dan Snow said: “This is the first time the Duchess has ever finished last in anything, I can guarantee. So you’d better enjoy it because it will never happen again.”
Accepting the winners’ trophy, Grylls spoke of the “incredible work” of Tusk and praised the Duke and Duchess’ “vision and inspiration” in setting up the event. In an unexpected aside, he added from the stage: “And also, Prince George: your first ant you ate today! And that is a great moment. Well done you. What a guy!”

Kensington Palace tweeted "It's the taking part that counts".

It's all in aid of wonderful causes. Well done to all who participated today!

There's very nice footage from the day below.

For Kate's arrival outfit, the Duchess wore the Striped Knit Top by Sandro (with thanks to Caroline). The terracotta, navy and white stripe top features short sleeves and ruffles on the sleeve ends and hem. It's reduced from $190 to $95 at Orchard Mile

Kate brought back her LK Bennett Parker trousers. Described as: "Inspired by vintage design, the Parker high-waisted trousers are a modern take on 70s tailoring. Detailed with four buttons across the high waist".

Kate wore her Superga Cotu sneakers. They are available in a number of colours at Nordstrom.

The Duchess accessorised with her Kiki McDonough Lauren earrings.

Shortly afterwards, Kate changed into a King's Cup polo t-shirt and shorts in preparation for sailing. Middleton Maven notes the Duchess wore the Gill Women's Team Softshell Jacket.

And a new pair of grey New Balance trainers. Laura notes they are available in limited sizing, reduced to £42, on the New Balance website.

And Katie identified their King's Cup caps as customised version of the Gill Marine Race Cap.

Did you enjoy the inaugural regatta?

She looks like she’s glowing! Love the sun kissed skin! Love the shirt but goodness, it could go without the ruffles at the bottom. It cuts her off wrong to me (at the midstomach). Love it all except for that ruffle ;)

  5. Don't personally like the top at all -- colors, ruffle, etc. Reminds me of the tops from the late 60s. But it doesn't matter; they look very, very cute lined up in their shorts! I don't remember ever seeing them in shorts, and it's a great look, especially for Kate. I love that she's so good in athletic events.

  6. Love the peplum shirt on Kate. She wears it exactly as peplums are styled to be worn. Unfortunately, Kates shorts in my opinion are ill fitting on her and are not very flattering. I do suppose they are strictly utility shorts for working on the boat. I think a little fuller leg would have done the trick. I think I can safely say, we will not see them again, lol!

I think the major problem is the peplum top and then the white buttons on the pants actually create TWO waistlines. She looks beautiful and tan, and I feel like they both genuinely enjoy sporting events.

    2. That's it, Kelly. The white buttons create a horizontal line that conflicts with the bottom of the top.

    3. Agree also Kelly.

      Delete
    4. Kelly, I agree with you completely. The buttons are distracting.

      Delete
    5. I agree. The buttons make the waistline of the pants appear lower than it is, thus making her legs look really short.

  8. I like this top, but don't love it with the pants. I feel like a peplum top should be worn with slimmer pants. Especially with the fit of this one. All of the pieces are great on their own- the top, the pants, the sneakers (Saw a full length shot elsewhere)- but they just don't work together. I prefer how she styled these pants last time with a slimmer shirt tucked in to balance out the wide leg of the pant. Or this top could have been better with her usual slimmer pants.

BUT- can I just say that I LOVE her hair so natural and wavy. It is usually so styled (which I do also love) but this natural look combined with her tan... she just looks so healthy and summery!

  9. Kate in shorts! I never thought I'd see the day and she looks so cute in them. As for the arrival outfit I like it. It's outside her usual choices and that's what I like. However those capris ... I've said this before: wide leg pants are not Kate's friend. Her extreme slimness in the legs makes it seem like she's drowning in fabric. I wish she'd get some nice cigarette capris.

But overall looks to be a fun day and I know Kate loves sports so I bet she'll be a blast to race with.

I love these type of events, can't wait for the full post.

I totally agree Rachel SA. Not a good look. She looks tan and happy though! Fun day for the entire family...that Charlotte is too much!

Can somebody explain how an event such as a regatta raises funds? Are their 8 corporate sponsors who pay for the operating expenses and then? How much could be raised for the charities in this case?

      Delete
    2. My guess is that it is all that and maybe a dinner/cocktail function afterwards where people can pay a fortune to say they watched the Cambridges sail and then had dinner with them, similar to what they have after polo matches.

    3. Caroline in Montana8 August 2019 at 21:36

Rita, I was going to ask the same question, exactly how do they get funds out of this event? an then its split between the 8 charities? puzzled in MT :)

    5. If it's anything like events we participate in over here... the money comes from sponsorship! It's basically advertising dollars that the corporate sponsors pay to have their name & logo on things for status publicity & it's for a good cause, so there are often incentives!

overall I like her arrival look!~ Not a fan of those pants but then I was looking at it and imagining no buttons and to my mind that looked worse?! I think the pants in general are not flattering, wish she would discover a nice cigarette pant. I like the top, I don't mind the flare detail, I think with out it she would just look too thin, good colors on her. love her in shorts! she has great legs. I saw a comment someone made that the shorts were ill fitting - we have seen 1 photo - 1! how in the world could you tell from that distance the shorts were ill fitted?? nice to see the children. cant wait for more pics. I'm just glad she's not in skinny jeans:)

  21. What a great event!! So much to love about this, but the best surprise is that the children are there with the Middleton's, what a nice family outing!! Kate looks great and while I don't mind the arrival look at all, think this would have been a great opportunity for Kate to have worn Kristin in Austin's LK Bennett navy and white jumpsuit with her Cotu sneakers, it would have been perfect!! Can't wait to see more pictures from this event and the best so far is the one of Prince George! Kate and William seem to be in their element, what a lovely family!! cc

  26. I think we can now see why she prefers skinny trousers.. wide leg are not for her. Agree that the top is too short: Kate has a long torso, this cuts it in the wrong place. Also, it doesn't go with the trousers. Love the sporty look though! To see Kate in shorts, what a day! She looks great and happy, and George with his grandparents and his sailor outfit is priceless!

    1. Skinny trousers also minimize the long torso because it looks like a seamless straight line from torso to waist. Kate has such a long straight torso that pencil skirts, skinny trousers, and sheath dresses just give her a long elegant look without drawing attention to her somewhat unusual proportions.

Just because one "Thinks" her ankle is too smooth and also too tan does not mean she's wearing panty hose.

  28. Can I say how relieved I am that Kate is not wearing pantyhose with her shorts? In the past she's always worn pantyhose with sneakers, even when she's in track pants.

    1. After the recent vacation to a sun destination, Kate's legs look tanned. If they weren't and given that nobody wears pantyhose with shorts, perhaps she would have worn longer pants, as others did in the photo.

      Delete
    2. I recently bought a pair only to be faced with the same problem Kate seems to have. I don’t like how they look with socks and I don’t like how they feel if I wear no socks. Sneaky hide away socks always irritate me. So what do I wear them with? I wear nude pantyhose or to be more accurate knee-highs with my sneakers.
I am open to any better suggestions.

      Delete
    3. I suspect if she has worn hose with long pants and sneaker they are knee highs or footies not pantyhose. I have never noticed the hose with her sneakers so I have no idea if she does. She may need some type of sock on with shoes due to lots of issues. Luckily with tennis shoes you can get those super low cut socks that you can barley see when worn with tennis shoes or boat shoes.

      Delete
    4. In general the nylons of pantyhose are really bad for sporty events. Nylons don't absorb heat and sweat well, and if you're moving around a lot in sporting events it can actually cause fungus to grow in your nails and also yeast infections. It's why ballet dancers usually wear toe-less tights and put foot pads into their pointe shoes -- to avoid the nylon on their toes. If you're doing an athletic event like running or jogging or rowing cotton socks are best.

So I guess that's my roundabout way of saying yeah, I think it's good Kate ditched her pantyhose w/sneakers combo today :)

    10. How can you guys not see it? The texture of the "skin" is clearly pantyhose, not actual skin. Kate is very pale. The texture of those pictures are smooth and tan, and look just like the photos where she's wearing hose with her dresses and skirts. The pictures even have that shimmery look that Kate favors with some of her hose.

Kudos to Kate though, she handled it well and know how I have felt when a child of mine did something I least wanted or expected them to do, except I didn't have a pack of photographers capturing every moment. I agree Caroline that Charlotte looks like she may be built like Kate and is very tall for her age, she seems to have shot up just this summer. Loved seeing the children. I don’t blame them for not wanting to wave, they are so young. Who wants cameras and groups of people always looking at you wherever you go ? I agree with Caroline In Montana that Charlotte looks tall. She almost as tall as her brother. George is adorable, minus his top teeth, kids are so cute at that stage. I didn’t like the Duchess in that top with those pants. I would love to see it with another style of pants.

  42. What a fun engagement. I do wonder though if the general public really does stop by to watch. It didn’t read or look like it- which would be sad. Watching the regatta and enjoying food and maybe some other entertainment could make this a great engagement for the public and introduce them to the selected charities. (With stands so there is the opportunity to get in depth information and actually meet people that work for the charities. But maybe the event is already set up
    like this.)
The arrival outfit was a miss in my book. The short peplum and the wide pants don’t work for her, either together nor separate. And I am actually still hoping she goes back to a darker hair colour. It flattered her complexion so much.

The childrens lifejackets were ill-fitting (way too large in size for small children). Sorry but the children should not have gone in the boat without appropriate safety gear. I can't believe the skipper of that boat or the Middleton's allowed this. So irresponsible!

    1. I absolutely agree about the life jackets. We have them available in every size for our growing family of 11 grandchildren. Not sure what happened here.

    2. They weren't racing. Not in all boats you need lifejackets. Not on ferries, for example.

    3. I realise the support boat wasn't racing. My point is safety. It is absolutely foolhardy not to ensure ALL children wear properly fitted lifejackets. The support boat was in the same water as the racing boats. William and Kate both wore lifejackets. Respect the sea but most of all respect your loved ones. It takes a few minutes to drown and a properly fitted lifejacket on a child can keep them alive for hours, they can even flip a person so their face is upwards enabling them to breathe. I just don't believe it's worth the risk not to ensure children wear one while on the water. It's not rocket science just sheer commonsense!

    5. Maybe Anon 07:35 is passionate for a reason not known to us. It's not a bad practice to follow, especially given how accidents can occur at a moments notice, and one that any boating family should comply with, sets a good example.

Great event! It's really good that it was just re-scheduled, not cancelled. I like both outfits and I love the pictures of the kids! Thank you so much also for the archive materials, Charlotte!

  45. What a fun event! I love the competitiveness between William and Kate. They seem to have so much fun together, which is so important in a marriage. I was hoping that they would bring their children along to join in. George's toothless smile is awesome, and Charlotte may take after her Uncle Harry!! I love that they have a more traditional relationship with their grandparents, and it appears that the Middleton's are a big part of their lives. I was blessed to have the support of both sets of grandparents, and it has been a wonderful experience for you son as well. I would imagine that their relationship with Charles and Camilla is a little more formal. They probably aren't babysitting on Friday night! I hope this becomes a yearly event and maybe as the kids get older they can participate too.

    Hope from USA

  46. I fong like the arrival look top but love her beautiful smile and her relaxed boat wear. Charlotte is so cute and I loved that as stuck her tongue out at the crowds I'm sure Kate wishes she could do that sometimes too haha she's a child glad she's allowed to be one! Kate really looks beautiful in all photos in this post thanks Charlotte

  47. I realized that we don't usually see the Middletons, and I think it's wonderful that they were part of the whole family event. I hope this is part of a trend and that we see them, and Doria with Meghan and Harry, more often.

  48. How lovely that they've made it a family event, and a Kate and William competition always goes over well with the public. Kates' pleasure at sports is great to see. George looks so endearing without his front teeth and captain's hat, and Charlotte is growing very tall indeed. Miss her happy waves when she was smaller. I thought Kate's top rather fun and youthful. I think they look fine with the trousers, except the two buttons on near the hem of the top were a bit distracting.

  49. Wow! Kate looks fabulous! Her legs are giving me #gymgoals! I think her shorts were appropriate for the sporty activity and they were a proper length. They definitely pass the "fingertip-length" modesty test.

As for the wide length pants, I think the proportions were off in this particular outfit. I loved the stripy peplum top but it would've worked better with a midi pencil skirt.

What a treat to see the kids and the Middletons! I like that Grandpa and Grandma were there to take care of the kids instead of hiding them behind closed doors. I like that now that the kids are getting older, Kate & William are starting to give the kids a first-hand look into royal work and getting them accustomed to the chaos of public engagements.

  52. My favorite photo of this event is George with his grandfather.

Even if Charles wanted to spend an afternoon minding his grandchildren while their parents participated in an event, it could never happen. He could never be in the background like that, playing the role of supportive grandfather.

    1. Agree Zipzipzippy!! It is rare that we get to see Michael Middleton with his grandchildren. There is one photo of George on the boat with his grandfather behind him, his hands on the boat on either side of George that also depicts exactly what you say, a supportive and loving grandfather. cc

    2. Agree 2 Zipzipzippy! Charles is such a busy person - it may just be that if he has any time off he needs to rest, or perhaps start another painting (maybe with cousin Sarah along if it’s a landscape!). But you never know - maybe he does babysit from time to time, if he can make time, just not in public! It seems to me that a lot of older people these days seem a lot younger than their actual ages, but from what I’ve read, that man keeps up with what, in even a younger man, would be a punishing schedule, so it’s hard to know how much time he really has. I read a sample week’s schedule for him not too long ago, and it really was brutal. He seems to be more relaxed these days though, which is lovely to see, and I’m also very glad that he seems to be happy with his Camilla.

    2. Yes, if the Duchess of Cambridge would put a head scarf on Princess Charlotte, and set her on top of a shetland pony, she would really look like QEII. Thank you for a wonderful blog, Charlotte. Parthenia

  54. What a great sport Kate is! She looks like the kind of friend we would all love to be around. What a fun day. This will probably turn out to be my favourite annual event if it is done annually. A lot of laughs and good exercise.
