It was a star-studded night at the Royal Albert Hall for the annual BAFTA awards. The event celebrated the very best in British and international contributions to film over the past year.
The BAFTA awards are becoming an annual staple on William and Kate's calendar. It is the fourth time they have attended and the third consecutive year. Prince William has been President of the Academy since 2010, and both he and the Duchess have supported BAFTA’s charitable activities by attending events across the charity’s learning programme, including Young Game Designers and BAFTA Kids events, as well as others related to building cross-cultural collaborations with the creative industries in China.
Ahead of the ceremony Kensington Palace said: "BAFTA is a world-leading independent arts charity that brings the very best work in film, games and television to public attention and supports the growth of creative talent in the UK and internationally. While BAFTA is well-known for celebrating excellence and championing creativity through its awards, it is a charity committed to identifying talented individuals, and making sure they receive the encouragement, professional support and advice that will enable them to succeed, regardless of their background or other circumstances."

It's been a stellar twelve months in film hasn't it? Nominations for Best Film are Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, 1917, Joker, The Irishman and Parasite.
The BAFTA award trophy is a mask designed by American sculptor Mitzi Cunliffe. When the Guild merged with the British Film Academy to become the Society of Film and Television Arts, later the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the first 'BAFTA award' was presented to Sir Charles Chaplin on his Academy Fellowship that year.

I am deeply honored to receive the Fellowship from BAFTA, and am incredibly thankful to have worked with so many talented members of our extended family in the British filmmaking community.”

'The Duke of Cambridge shared concern about the lack of diversity at the BAFTA Awards 2020, saying that it "cannot be right in this day and age." Prince William delivered a speech as he presented the Fellowship award to film producer Kathleen Kennedy. The Duke, who has been President of BAFTA since 2010, said: "Both here in the UK and in many other countries across the world we are lucky to have incredible film makers, actors, producers, directors and technicians - men and women from all backgrounds and ethnicities enriching our lives through film.
"Yet in 2020, and not for the first time in the last few years, we find ourselves talking again about the need to do more to ensure diversity in the sector and in the awards process – that simply cannot be right in this day and age!"
William added: "I know that both Pippa, Chair of BAFTA, and Amanda, BAFTA CEO, share that frustration and continue to work tirelessly to ensure that creative talent is discovered and supported. BAFTA take this issue seriously, and following this year’s nominations, have launched a full and thorough review of the entire Awards process to build on their existing work and ensure that opportunities are available to everyone."
Afterwards, the couple met with several award winners including Renee Zellwegger who won Best Actress for her outstanding performance in Judy.

Roya Nikkhah reports William told Best Actor winner Joaquin Phoenix "I absolutely loved The Joker. It was brilliant. It put it off and put it off before watching it, as people kept telling me "be careful when you choose to watch it". I'm glad I didn't watch it before bed."

William and Kate met Michael Ward, winner of the EE Rising Star award.
In 2016, Kate selected a bespoke Alexander McQueen gown with a floral print and tiered skirt. In 2018, it was bespoke dark green Jenny Packham with show-stopping emeralds and last year Kate wore a stunning one shoulder McQueen design.
This year, the BAFTAs asked guests to be more sustainable in their sartorial choices. Whether re-wearing items from their wardrobes or supporting sustainable designers. A spokesperson told Grazia magazine "Sustainability is very important to Bafta, and we’re doing more than ever before. The goal is that the EE British Academy Film Awards 2020 will be carbon neutral, working towards having a net positive impact on the environment. From travel and food, to branding and materials, Bafta is ensuring the awards are as sustainable as possible." We all expected Kate would choose a repeat for the night (with many of us hoping to see her black velvet McQueen gown). Instead, the Duchess chose another piece by the designer - the white gown with gold embroidery she debuted for a state dinner during the Malaysia tour in 2012.
You'll notice the Hibiscus flower adorns the garment, the official flower of Malaysia.
As the piece was specifically created for the tour, I hadn't expected to see it again. I've often wondered how many of Kate's looks are stored in the archives for future exhibitions - pieces we may not see publicly again. I thought it possible this gown may fall in that category. It was a divisive piece on its first outing. Has your opinion changed almost eight years later? I was surprised to see it again. I do think it works well in this setting and it's quite different from Kate's signature choices in gowns. The accompanying gold clutch and shoes in addition to the striking updo elevated the piece for me. As you can see in the photos below, the sleeves of the gown have been altered.
Kate's gorgeous new jewellery is by Van Cleef & Arpels. The Magic Alhambra earrings retail for £5,400 (with thanks to Replicate Royalty). The collection is described as: "Created in 2006 by Van Cleef & Arpels, the Magic Alhambra jewelry creations gather different-sized Alhambra motifs, coming together in a joyful dance. Inspired by the clover leaf, their asymmetric designs feature different associations of materials."
And the citrine cocktail ring Kate's had for over a decade.
Kate's fabulous shoes are the gold Jimmy Choo Fireball Glitter Degrade pointy toe pumps. They are available in several colours at Net-A-Porter. The Duchess also owns them in silver.

DeleteI don't like the dress either, and never have, although I do think the changes improve it a little. The bodice just appears so stark and white. Although the gold and white main fabric is not my favorite, I think that if the dress was just done in that fabric, that I would like it a lot better. That contrast of fabrics just isn't attractive to me. I love VCA jewelry, I don't think the necklace looks that great with this dress. The dress is in such extravagant fabrics, and the VCA mother of pearl is really kind of plain. I think the earrings alone would look much better. But Kate is a stunner, really, no matter what she wears. Just not a big fan of this dress. Carol

DeleteY'all are crazy! It's one of my favorite dresses of hers!!! She looks absolutely stunning in it and I'm not even normally a fan of gold. To me, the cut and styling is perfect - classy, elegant and extremely feminine without being too revealing. Love the white and gold. It has a Byzantine / Eastern feel about it without being overbearingly ethnic in any one particularly country or sense. It wouldn't be appropriate, perhaps, towear at a state dinner but it's absolutely perfect for a glamorous event like the Baftas. I'm so glad Kate had the courage to bring this piece out, again! I was blown away the first time I saw it and even more so this time. Good for her for upcycling this fantastic dress!!!

ReplyDeleteI applaud Kate for giving this gown a second outing. It’s a tricky design, no question. I wasn’t too impressed when she first wore it in 2012. Her overall look was just a bit too girlish for me. This time it’s absolute perfection: the regal interpretation of bohemian glamour. Superb!
ReplyDeleteI like this gown. Maybe because it's not very "Kate." I don't know if I can explain it but I feel like Kate has a set color palette and a rather predictable taste in evening gowns. And this one isn't a "typical" Kate evening gown. I also like the more offbeat jewelry. I'm looking at some of the other BAFTA gowns and I think Scarlett Johanssen's is my favorite. Laura Dern also looks lovely.

So many other lovely evening dresses like the black one shown on this blog a few days ago & the blue one she wore in India. Now that was spectacular! C'est la vie she is still lovely!

It said over on the DM that they changed the sleeves, but after having a good look at the two pictures, it appears they just added a lining, and maybe some padding to the shoulders, for structure.

Kate is a very thoughtful dresser and the hibiscus flower motif is very specific, not much opportunity for a repeat just anywhere. Now, I have seen more photos. My call on the dress still stands. I think the dress looked pretty at it’s intended surroundings and engagement. The reworked sleeves are not helping either. It’s not a fashionable dress- so I don’t feel it looks right on a red carpet in the entertainment industry.
DeleteThe jewellery is insignificant. You can by the same design at every mall. Matching the embroidery motive is actually making it worse in my opinion. Too much matchy-matchy - Kate has a tendency to go one too far in that department.
The bag and the shoes are gorgeous and her up do is just magnificent. It looks a bit like the one we got a glimpse at, at Charles’ 70th birthday.
The dress worked much better with 2012 Kate at a state engagement. For the BAFTAS it’s a miss.

I agree about the dress being weird for the occasion. I thought of this dress as of a sartorial nod to Malaysia and solely a tour-related piece. I did not even think it was a regular gown, it seemed really specific for the tour and maybe even a bit costumey. Which was okay for the occasion (tour), although I thought the dress was not her best. But why wear it for BAFTAs? Kate always seems to put a lot of thought into her outfits so I wonder what her motivation to re-wear this particular dress was. I can't believe she chose it "just so" or just because she thought it was the prettiest/most appropriate dress on hand.

The dress is beautiful but for this occassion it is a miss IMO...i don't like the jewels nor the make up...but this is because i prefer when she looks more natural...for me this dress was perfect for malasya...you could appreciate it was designed for that occasion...now it is out of place in a bafta ceremony...it has an oriental touch that just has nothing to do with a red carpet...my idea is that is was chosen to make it clear that it was a repeat...something created for another occassion that is being used again...ok...but she had more appropriate choices in her wardrobe...

ReplyDeleteI was really hoping for the sapphire blue Jenny Packham gown but I have always liked this as well. I think the rework of the sleeves (lined and more tailored) fit the gown better than the original looser fitting sheer sleeves. The earrings and necklace do mimic the same flower motif that is on the gown so they are ok, just not my favorite.

ReplyDeleteWhen you say, Charlotte, that the jewelry is "new" do you mean a new purchase or just that we have never seen it before? I sometimes wonder whether Kate is given jewelry that gets put in a box and then she trots it out at some time and wears it. Although I agree that this necklace is a bit streamlined for such a fancy dress, the motif is that same as the gold embroidery on the gown so that might be why she chose it. It also seemed, even though it comes from an American jeweler, that it might be something given to her on her Asian tour. Probably I am totally wrong as I am a fashion dunce but I do like jewelry and every once in awhile I wear something that dh says "Is that new?" And it was something I got from my mother decades ago but never have worn.

Now that I see it all, I think the remarkable jewelry takes away from the remarkable gown! The jewelry would look amazing against a simple-cut black gown, and the current gown needs only gold jewelry. Her hair is very very pretty, and I don't know if we'll ever get a good look at the additional ring.

ReplyDeleteThis dress was a lovely surprise. Loved it the first time, although I was surprised then at the neckline compared to the other women in attendance. While I too was hoping for the black strapless McQueen, I have to say I think this is a much better choice for this venue and for a royal. Watching them enter I couldn't help but think that Kate just would have blended in with the woman in black leading them to their seats. The new jewelry is an interesting choice -- but I always prefer the older jewels!

ReplyDeleteNot my favourite to be honest and the “new” jewelry (to the public anyway) doesn’t fit with the dress code asking for repeats, rented etc (unless these are borrowed?). Love her hair and it’s detail.
ReplyDeleteAlways loved this dress. I never thought it would be seen again as it was specific to the Malaysia trip and many would consider it to be too ethnic or bohemian. But that's exactly why I like it. It has character! Lovely, just perfection.

I was hoping she would wear the sequined dress she wore for the Elephant Tusk Trust right after she had George, it would be more BAFTA ish, it remains one of my favorites of hers and I think she has yet to rewear it! Hope to see it again someday. I must say how disappointed I am that with all the fashion houses going out of business, the BAFTAS choose to have this rule. Seems like people are suffering by losing their businesses, it would be better to give people business and support industry. There are plenty of schools that would take used dresses for prom dresses. Again Hollywood is out of touch with society and totally missed the mark, I just have no respect for the movie industry anymore.... they want people to go see their movies but they won’t give support in exchange very sad. ReplyDeleteI think the Duchess looks lovely and I think this was a really smart rewear for the evening given the goal of sustainable dressing. She has not reworn this dress in 8 years, likely because it is not her typical style. So by rewearing it tonight, she makes a pretty clear statement that she is supporting the BAFTA message of sustainability, because she would not have selected this dress otherwise. In any event, I think the dress is lovely, and she looks elegant as always.

ReplyDeleteI believe the difference would be that BAFTA was behind the sustainability theme, and that it was the UK actors/attendees who were behind the #metoo movement to wear black last year.
DeleteThere's a difference between following an official dress code (which the 'sustainability' thing was) and supporting a social movement. There are many social movements and if they cherry pick the social movements they are going to support, they'll be in danger of losing political neutrality. I thought the green dress she wore on that occasion was genius because it seemed to have a black tint to it somehow and was the perfect nod to the social movement without actually being fully compliant with it. Plus, it's pretty much a given that Kate would agree that sexual assault and rape are bad - dressing in black for one evening is not a particularly effective way of getting that message across!

DeleteI agree with you ABCD, the green dress she wore last year was a perfect nod to the social movement without actually sanctioning it, that is not her role. Also agree that just wearing black for one evening is not going to end the issue, I haven't seen any of those same actors/actresses continue to wear black. Come to think of it Also, not so sure I saw so many wearing 'sustainable' clothing or repeats???

ReplyDeleteKate is Absolutely Breathtaking!! Is it even possible she is so fit & beautiful & kind all at the same time!? A true jewel in the crown & an English Rose at that! We just finished watching the Super Bowl over here in the states & I only now just remembered tonight were the Baftas! What a treat of a post & I loved the videos. I am honored to be attending Cannes this year, with several films I am attached to on the production teams. My travel arrangements were just finalized today & after watching clips of the Baftas... I'm already stressing a bit about the wardrobe decisions I will have to make.... Yikes! Well at least I have a few months. Another treat will be that I'll be bookending my time in Cannes with a lovely time before & afterwards back in London for more Pre-Production work, for 2 upcoming films. I do love London in May. Last May I was over for one of our film's premieres at Bafta & I was there for Archie's birth & actually in Windsor the day afterwards. I'm quite looking forward to my May across the pond already. Excited to read everyone's comments & to see any & all additions to the full post when Charlotte is finished. Loving all this Will & Kate time!! :)

DeleteThanks Zora & Cece! I'm "pea green" too.... that is when I think too hard about the wardrobe! Yikes! Upon the recommendation of others, I'm staying about a 6K drive from Cannes, up in the mountains. (it's supposed to be such a relaxing area to balance oneself out from all that will be going down at The Festival!) Therefore, I continue to receive more tips about planning one's wardrobe (sometimes 3 changes in a day) based on casual time with friends & colleagues, then varying levels of smart casual for meetings & industry conferences, then varying degrees of smart to elegant dress based on the evening planned! I'll have to depart each day with these min of 3 changes (luckily to leave in friends' rooms closer to the events) each day. They actually have a location where one can lock up one's bags (containing changes of clothing) down at the shore... as many times plans can change on a moment's notice & so then does one's wardrobe!.... thus the pea green of my nerves! lol :) What would we do without friends who know the ropes to get us through new experiences! My time in London (& other various locals in England) will be an absolutely relaxing joy! Other than the odd smart night out.... it will mostly be relaxing comfy clothes with my dear friends & production partners! :) xx

DeleteThe more often I looked at it the more it grew on me. The altered sleeves give it a mega boost imho. At first sight I thought the necklace is way too much with the busy pattern but it isn‘t. It‘s a well thought through look! Good job, Catherine! Personally I had a couple of other gowns I‘d prefer to see again: the black velvet and the sparkly blue Indian e. g. 🌻
ReplyDeleteI just don’t like the way the plain white fabric is crossed over in the front. It draws your eyes right to that area, which in many cases is probably desirable, but I don’t think Kate intends for the dress to do that.

ReplyDeleteUnfortunately this gown is a rare miss for me. I don't like framed/border bustline at all. All the gold not just on the gown, but shoes, bag and matching jewellery, too much. Regardless she looks lovely. Her hair on the other hand looked beautiful, elegant and very feminine.

Thank you Charlotte for an interesting post. Very glad we have the BFTAs to support creative development in the industry. Also glad that the selection process for nominees is being looked at to ensure the process is fairly open to all and not somewhat skewed.
ReplyDeleteWilliam and Kate are now both so comfortable in their roles and a pleasure to watch. Last night I re watched The Kings Speech, a previous BFTA winner and empathised with King George VI struggle with his self belief in his ability to be a good king and to be worthy of his people. Perhaps in the early years William also had self doubt. It is a massive role for anyone. I personally was always pleased he spent those few years work in in rescue and air ambulance because it gave him a first hand view of the tragedy some people have to face in life. That could never have been learned behind palace walls. I do believe those experience will in part inform his kingship.
I liked the choice of the Malaysian gown re wear. it is true she has many beautiful gowns and we all have our favourites. However for me it fits the remit of the BFTA dress code so well. It was never going to be easy to re wear as it was so specific for the Malaysian tour. However it is is ideal for a glitzy occasion like the BFTAS and so instead of languishing in the wardrobe it is out for us all to see again, which is what sustainability is all about. The beautiful embroidery deserved a second viewing, so many hours and such craftsmanship. It is still an exquisite fit for Kate and I thought well accessorised with the beautiful updo and jewellery that complimented the embroidery.
There will be many more occasions when some of the other gowns will come out.
Libby an excellent point about this being a difficult gown to rewear for most of the events/occassions she and William attend. You are right many of her other gowns are a bit more versatile.
DeleteOh my goodness Libby, I love everything you said & you said it all so well! I too have found myself lately (initially for film work research) watching any & all previous Period Dramas & Documentaries, to do with the Royal Family, including The Queen at 90 & Diana selections... it just so happened that whilst I was in the midst of my research, that the recent events began unfolding with H&M. One couldn't help but also wonder at it's effects on William & Catherine! The perspective it gave me was quite sobering. I too was so struck (having not watched it in a few years) rewatching The King's Speech, about the acute manifestation of the stress & pressure on one in this family & facing such daunting roles. It can never be said enough, how wise The Queen was to support & I dare say encourage W&K to make the most of the time they had as a young couple, living as normal a life as possible (similar to her & PP's time on Malta) & being allowed to spend the time they could, to raise & lay a solid foundation for their young family. Lord knows there are loaded decades ahead for them all! Thank you again Libby for your wonderful insights! :)

Her body language over the years has improved so much, in the three pictures together, in the floral dress she’s hunched over and looks nervous but last year she was upright and open and so confident. Little Louis arriving really has been the making of her!

I don’t like sleeves above the elbow on a formal gown. My absolute fave BAFTA gown was her very first one - the gorgeous pink confection she wore in LA. I don’t think she’s worn it again, which is a shame!
ReplyDeleteThis is a tangential post: Where in the world does Kate keep all her clothes, and how does she keep up with what she has and where it is? She must have a clothes catalogue, sort of like a library's catalogue of books. (Disclosure: I am a retired librarian!) The "story" of keeping up with the clothes would make a great human interest piece. I wonder whether Kate and the palace would be willing to share any information. (Charlotte, you would be a great one to cover the story!!!)

I have read a story that addressed this very issue, except for Queen Elizabeth. It also included some pictures of her "closets". It was very interesting. There must be an enormous amount of work going into cleaning, pressing, repairs and alterations, and then proper storage.

DeleteIt is just the beginning of Children's Mental Health Week and we are not privy to Kate's scheduled engagements, there could be events on the calendar that we will see this week. There is an article on the closing of the Art Room patronage discussing the closing of the program.

In an increasing shrinking donator pool, Place2be had to decide where best to put their monies, and most likely Kate has been apprised of this as Patron. It appears that efforts are being made to try to continue the program in another format that makes sense financially. Unfortunately, art and music programs are the first to go in school budgets and programs are forced to adjust accordingly!!! What would you recommend that Kate be doing?

DeleteI am happy to stand corrected, I based my opinion on her previous non visits to the charity during that week span. There is a whole week to visit Place2tobe, hence they get a message. Still, find it a wee bit strange.
DeleteWell, for one, she loves taking photos, why not having a fundraiser, and giving some to the charity to auction. And before you say that it is how unroyal, Charles did just the same for charity.
The imminent closure of The Art Room did make me ask a few questions about the role royals play in the finances of their patronages. It seems like over the last few years people have started to equate “being a patron of” with “being a fundraiser for” even though it is not the same thing at all, although not mutually exclusive. Royals have always used their name/presence to help their patronage raise money - Charles took this even further by getting directly involved in fundraising tonsave historical buildings. But that is not the main purpose of their patronage. It is the legitimacy they lend to the organization and the acknowledgment of the work that is being done that is really the point of a royal patron.
DeleteWhen I read about the Art Room closing my first reaction was also, come on Kate, host one reception and you can raise enough money to keep the doors open (...for a while). But when I started thinking about it, I realised she has already facilitated a merger with Place2be to help the Art Room be more sustainable.
If I remember correctly The Art Room was also one if the charity’s that benefitted from the King’s Cup and still they are in financial difficulties.
At what point do you say, “Look guys, this is a great idea, but it is just not financially feasible.”
My guess is The Art Room has reached that point. And no matter how fond Kate is of the project, it is not a good use of anybody’s resources to keep it going in its current format.
If she does a fundraise selling or auctioning something she would be forced to do the same thing for all the charities or patronages she may visit/have. I think her approach is much more realistic. People should help because they are interested in the cause not because they want to have something made or owned by Kate.

Forced to do sounds a bit out of context to me. A royal patron does raise funds when she wants to.
This is a very traditional "princess" type dress, and Kate is very traditional-the reason she is so admired by so many. Her clothing choices always make a statement about her role and her desire to uphold royal tradition, not break new ground. She looked glowingly confident and absolutely beautiful.

I disagree. Kate has experimented a lot with clothing- some of her coices were pretty bold. The teal Jenny Packham (one of my wishes for this event), the pale blue Jenny Packham at the Spectre premiere (one I wish she had bruned afterwards) and she is no stranger to high slits. I agree that she interprets her role in a more traditional sense and her clothing choices do make a statement. She has been wearing a lot of buttoned up and dare I say frumpy clothes in the last couple of years but she ventures out again and again.

I think that may be the essence -- a lot of people don't want change. Having things continues as in the past brings a security. But Kate has already broken new ground in many ways. One way was to have her family so involved and to raise her children without isolation from her family. In addition, she and William knew when they became "involved" what the future might be like, and they lived together for years with relative privacy. That broke new ground. She is called an English rose, but that seems like a term meant to exclude anyone who is not English born. It is very possible that her children will move in circles that include (I hope!) people from around the world, so people must be willing to accept roses from other areas. :)

I think Catherine looked, absolutely, stunning. If her gown appeared costumey, to some, she wore the 'costume' elegantly, and with grace & charm. It did not wear her. Especially, when compared to some of the movie industry's red carpet costumes worn by others! Honestly, there is no comparison. Her gown flowed with her, beautifully, and she glowed I wasn't crazy about the necklace & earings, but her stature, and overall look & movement, spoke volumes.

I cringed too! I have just watched it and I don't like Rebel Wilson's kind of humor, very unpleasant. Brad Pitt is awkward but not as nasty.

Not at all a fan of the jewelry. I'm sure the materials and craftsmanship are top drawer, but it looks like something I could get for $20 at Target. I don't wear jewelry much myself, but I figure if you're Catherine at an occasion like this, go big or bust. The emeralds year was fantastic. I don't love the dress but I do like that it looks really different from her usual choices. It's nice to see some real variety and the very fact that it ISN'T fashionable is kind of a win for me. You won't see another look like it this awards season. Her hair is stunning as always.

Splendid. I always thought this was one of the more glamorous gowns, and was wondering when, if ever, it would make a reappearance. She looks even better in it the second time! Love the updo, the sleeve alteration is a huge plus. I loved the moment when the fans call out to Kate and then to William, gentle fun was had by all, and William took it in such good-natured stride! I LOVED that moment.

I do like the dress...i think it fits her very well...she is beautiful although I do not appreciate the make up so much...but for me the point is just that this dress has a kind of summery touch and oriental tayloring that does not fit with the occasion...a london winter red carpet gala. Do not appreciate the necklace particularly. IMO it is a good idea to recycle this dress...it must have been an expensive one and it suits her well...it is just i think she could have found a better occasion to do it...and at the same time i think she could have recicled a more suitable dress for the bafta

This is February and it is pretty cold out and the fellows wear suit jackets, you can see Kate with a red nose while she was walking the red carpet from outside to inside. This gown was one of my choices, because the gown covers her back and almost half of her arms. Still my absolute favorite is the 2019 SM. The Duchess I have notice many times and for many years she like detail interesting items and clothes she purchase items that will match other items she has. Her Ballon Blue 33 MM Cartier watch, I think I read somewhere she has a mother of pearl face, and her jewelry a four leaf cover four-leaf clover means faith, hope, love and luck made of mother of pearl that is her taste. You did not see any of the big stars wear heavy jewelry if any.💛
