The Cambridges Celebrate Local Organisations & Businesses in South Wales

It was an away day for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in South Wales focused on a variety of engagements highlighting local organisations and businesses.

William and Kate arrived at Mumbles Pier shortly after noon for engagements in the scenic area. Shortly afterwards, Kensington Palace tweeted "Helo ‘na o Dde Cymru! Mae Dug a Duges Caergrawnt heddiw’n dathlu busnesau a chymunedau’r Mwmbwls a Phort Talbot. // Hello South Wales! Today The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are celebrating businesses and local communities in The Mumbles and Port Talbot."

Wales is a very special place for the Cambridges. They shared their first home together - a four-bedroom rented farmhouse - on the Isle for three years while William worked as a Search and Rescue pilot. Months after the royal wedding Kate said: "I love our life in Anglesey. It's just nice to be outdoors and away from the city. As much as I love London, it's nice to get away". When the couple left William said they would return "again and again".

Only a fortnight ago, Kate visited Cardiff as part of the launch of her early years survey and I noted how important it is to forge bonds with the people and the communities there, especially as William and Kate are the next Prince and Princess of Wales.

Their first port of call was the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) Mumbles Lifeboat station, which is one of Wales’ busiest lifeboat stations.

The Queen has been patron of the RNLI since 1952. They were introduced to a number of volunteers and Paul O’Dwyer who was saved by the RNLI after his boat lost power out at sea. They discussed the mental health of the crew and the importance of talking to each other. They also presented volunteer James Bolter with a ’20 Years of Service’ award.

Lifeboat crews at The Mumbles have been saving lives for over 180 years.

Outside, a very eager group waited to greet the royals.

A video from the first portion of the day.

People reports:

'During Prince William and Kate’s visit to south Wales on Tuesday, the royal mom met 3-year-old Annabel shortly after their arrival at Mumbles Pier.
“I said to her that Annabel was really excited to meet a real princess,” Annabel’s mother, local family doctor Rhian Costello, tells PEOPLE. “And she said, ‘I’m sorry I’m not wearing a pretty dress today.’ Annabel then said that she thought she’d look like Cinderella.”
Costello, who also has 18-month-old twins at home, adds, “She was very, very natural and lovely and sweet with the children. She was so lovely talking to as many people and children as possible. She said that Annabel looked cold and asked how long we’d been waiting. I thanked them for coming to Wales and that it’s so lovely they come and bring their publicity.”
Kate then responded that she and William “would like to try to come more as they always enjoy coming down to visit.”

Kate had a very special reunion when she noticed two of her primary school teachers Denise Evans-Alford and Kevin Alford in the crowd.

More from Hello! Magazine:

'Kate attended St Andrew's prep school in Pangbourne, Berkshire, along with her siblings Pippa and James Middleton, until she was 13. Mrs Evans-Alford was her netball coach while Mr Alford taught French and German. The Duchess, who had not seen her tutors for 20 years, told them: "I want to instil in my children what I learned at St Andrews."
After the reunion, Mrs Evans-Alford said: “Kate hasn’t changed at all, you can tell, Pippa and James are wonderful too. I’ve been waiting 20 years for this." Mr Alford said: "We saw her once when she came back to school, when she was 14, and we haven't seen her since. Obviously, we've been following her career. She was in such a wonderful class of girls and they got on so well together."

The video below has lovely footage of Kate meeting children.

Mike Sutton Smith shared a very sweet video of his father-in-law Harvey Bentley meeting the Duchess. Kate told him "I hope you're keeping warm enough. It's very nice to meet you. Thank you for coming to say hello to us". She added "It's lovely to see the children out". Harvey kissed Kate on the hand and she told him she would send William over to say hello.

Harvey's son-in-law Mike said his family would never forget the meeting.

Emily Nash shared a clip of the royals meeting pupils from Oystermouth primary school. They were out in force waving flags despite the blustery weather.

The children were on hand to teach William and Kate a few words in Welsh. Simon Perry reports:

'Though the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent the first years of their married life in North Wales, they asked the children to help polish their language skills. “She asked the children to teach her some Welsh words,” Rosaria Burke, 25, says. “They said hello and ‘nos da’ for goodnight.”
William, on the other hand, had already mastered “good morning” — saying “bore da” — the only problem being that it was already afternoon. When one woman taught him “prynhawn da” for good afternoon, he repeated it and added, “But you guys have probably been here since morning. Your hands aren’t so cold — they’ve got the coldest hands up there,” the royal said, gesturing towards Mumbles Pier which they had just left.'

From there, it was a previously unannounced visit to Joe's ice cream parlour.

Kensington Palace said: "The family run business has been serving gelato to local resident’s since Joe Cascarini arrived from Italy in the early 1900s."

William told staff he's a "chocolate man" before sampling a signature cone. Kate asked him "Is that good?". As you can see it's a thumbs up! The Duchess had her ice cream in a tub.

The Duchess sat down with a group of parents and caregivers to discuss her 5 Big Questions survey.

A group of children were excited to talk to Kate.

And this is a strong contender for 'moment of the day' :)

William spotted a copy of Julia Donaldson's Room On The Broom and said "I read this to the children all the time". He recently presented the author with a CBE for services to literature.

In Port Talbot, William and Kate met with employees and their families at the UK’s largest steel plant, which has been operating on the site for over one hundred years. The plant is a vital employer in the area, providing over 4,000 jobs to members of the local community.

The factory creates a range of steel products including products for construction and appliances.

Almost fifty years ago the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh visited Port Talbot to open the all new BOS Plant and and Harbour.

Finally, William and Kate visited the Bulldogs Development Centre.

The Bulldogs is a partnership between Bulldogs Boxing & Community Activities and Port Talbot Amateur Boxing, which helps to support young people in the community who may have been affected by adverse childhood experiences and mental health issues, and gives them a sense of belonging through fitness and boxing.

The Palace said the visit was organised to coincide with Children's Mental Health Week.

This year's theme is Find Your Brave.

Yesterday, Kate shared a message marking the week:

'For many children today, the world can feel a scary and daunting place. While we might not always feel brave inside, even the smallest act - such as sharing a worry or asking for help - can be incredibly courageous. Helping children to feel confident about seeking support can have a transformational impact on their lives.
Being able to try new things and push ourselves outside of our comfort zone are important skills that can build children’s resilience and self-esteem. Learning these skills early in life can give children tools to cope with future challenges they may face in adulthood.
I am therefore so pleased to once again support Place2Be’s Children’s Mental Health Week, which is this year focused on bravery. Through all my interactions with the charity, I’m proud to have seen how its work is helping children, young people and adults to be more confident in looking after their mental health, but there is still much more to do.  The first step is talking about it, and recently I’ve launched a UK-wide survey on the under-fives in an attempt to get people to do just that.  Our long-term ambition is to bring about positive, lasting change for generations to come.
I’d love schools and families across the country to take part in the week to help children and young people to ‘find their brave’.

The Duchess chose a stylish red and navy look with high street pieces and items from her own wardrobe.

The Hobbs Bianca coat is a timeless and versatile addition to Kate's amazing collection. The long, military inspired piece is described as "Crafted from a luxurious wool-rich fabric, the Bianca from Hobbs is a timeless layer you'll still be wearing years from now. Expertly tailored, it's cut to a maxi silhouette and features burnished crested buttons and shoulder epaulettes." It's available in very limited sizing at Hobbs where it's reduced from £349 to £249. It's also on sale at Debenhams.

A shorter forest green version of the Bianca style is on sale for £199. It's reduced by 40% at Bloomingdales.

Kate's red ZARA dress is a past season piece (with thanks to Heaven). The Duchess added her own black belt. The choice of red was very likely a nod to Wales.

Kate accessorised with the Beulah London Shibani scarf in a red heart print. It's currently available for pre-order.

The Duchess carried her Mulberry Darley bag in red croc.

Kate accessorised with her Asprey Oak Leaf earrings.

And her G, C and L necklace by Daniella Draper.

Kate completed the look with her Stuart Weitzman Half N Half boots.

Next Tuesday, William and Kate will join Charles and Camilla for a visit to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre Stanford Hall and meet patients and staff. Stanford on Soar, Loughborough.

  2. Just from this first photo, William and Kate look like a well-matched team. They also look happy, relaxed, and confident. They will make a solid King and Queen one day.

  4. Good things - they look as a very happy couple, there are repeated pieces and quite "affordable" coat, nice color pallette. Not-so-good things - I am not a fan of long coats teamed with slouchy boots. Also I have to say half-updo is not quite my favorite hairstyle of Kate´s, plus she looks kind of tired today.

It is great to see them "out there", doing these away days around the UK, really touring the country and meeting the people.

  8. I like the classic navy coat despite the fact that it looks very similar to the navy Guinea London tweed coat which she wore in Scotland last year. I like her in new clothes but it would be more sustainable if she would rewear her clothes like the evening gown at the BAFTAS. The red Mulberry clutch is very chic but I am slightly irritated that she removed the chain or cord and now there are two holes on top of the bag.

    1. I completely agree that the coat is an example of Kate's 'the same but different'-tendency. Why echoing previous worn items with new pieces?

    2. The Mulberry site indicates the chains on many of their clutch bags are fully detachable, so, yes there are holes, but she probably didn’t use bolt cutters to achieve the designer intended optional look. 😉

  11. Love, love, love her look today; it's matured over the last couple of years; today with the lovely gold earrings (instead of a locket type necklace and matching earrings) and her hair styled out of her face so she doesn't have to put it behind her ears and be fooling with it; plus the style gives everyone a good look at her face in the pictures. They are so fun and sweet together. All in all, just so fond of her and them, their style, their good works. Yeah.

  12. My only quibble is I wish the coat were green so she would have complete Welsh flag colors (red and green) but William is wearing a green jumper so maybe that was their color decision for the day. Looks like she has a red dress too. I had the Beaulah London heart scarf in blue but an airline lost my luggage and oh well. I will never pack any precious scarf in checked luggage again 😂😂

  15. Also, I had just recently re-watched W&K's engagement interview & I was surprised that I forgot how she used to use such a strong eye liner/pencil under her eyes. I know it was the subject of much discussion in the early years, but I just love how she has gradually evolved from that & I feel her eyes look so young & fresh without it. :)

I love the way you put everything together Charlotte - this is a fantastic post.

I like this dress - I am not sure it is the best choice for Kate's figure. I feel like it just makes her longer. Also it feels too dressy for the flatter boot. I feel like with all of the visits/walking and boot style she may have done better with a wool skirt.

Love the coat and dress, glad she added the belt. I would like a different pair of boots. William and Kate both are taking their work to a different level this year, which I am sure was planned long before any changes to the duty roster, so to speak. Good for them. Natacha, actually ÃŽthink they should be able to manage at least in French and German , seeing their position ! The queen speaks quite a good French , I think Charles can manage too , Catherine and William should really , as future head of States , be able to have a short conversation in some European languages . I know Welsh is quite tough to learn , especially the prononciation , at least Willian has tried ! But ÃŽfeel they make it too much of’ a joke , peaople are always deeply touched when famous visitors can deal with their own language ! Sure they could take lessons ...

  22. What a diverse set of engagements in Wales today. I love their interaction with each other. They bring out the best in each other. They share little details about their own children as they meet and talk to the people in the crowd. After seeing her with a scarf today, I wish she would wear one more often. She could repeat so many of her coats by restyling them with a scarf. I can't imagine what her coat closet (storage area) must look like. She has so many! Great day in Wales.

Where you’re a bit less anxious, a bit more forgiving towards yourself, as you relax into the person you’ve become. Just reviewed the comment policy again for myself, and while I see nothing off topic or hateful, I wonder about the frequent comments I notice about Kate looking tired - too me this seems unnecessary and unkind. I know that I haven’t found it helpful or kind when I’ve been told that I look tired! We don’t have to all agree with her fashion or hairstyle choices and that’s fine, but I don’t find it necessary for us to talk about whether or not she looks tired. Kate is always interested and engaged when she’s working, and in my book that’s what is important. Just my opinion.

    1. I also hate when I'm being told I look tired!!! Although it doesn't help at all, usually people do it out of concern for you, not to imply they don't like how you look.
IMO, Kate has a lot on her plate, she does a lot and sometimes she looks exhausted, because she probably is. I must say it is a clear sign for me that she doesn't lead a pampered and lazy life as many imply.
In any case, tired or not, she always manages to be the most beautiful person in the room, and as you say Kiki, she always is interested, engaged and good-humored.

I just find it funny how I would think she looked energized and in the game and then somebody would comment that she looked tired and then on other days I would think she looked stressed and tired while people would comment how confident she looked. I do believe a lot of it is in the eye of the beholder. We base our comments on a couple of pictures and maybe a few minutes of video. For the rest we project our own feelings on the royals.

But why, oh, why, does Kate need a new item practically every time she steps out. It doesn't matter if its Zara, Hobbs or Chanel - the amount of coats on display is practically disturbing. Style really has nothing to do with the amount of clothes in a wardrobe, anyway.

Oh, well, bring on the pummeling :-)

    2. I have to admit that I agree with you on this point when it come to coats. She looked stunning today, but she could have achieved the same look with one of her other coats.
I wonder if it could be a symptom of not having a strict budget. I often find myself picking something from the shelves only to remember that I have a very similar piece at home - I am just drawn to certain looks - but because I don’t have a unlimited budget I would put it back. But if I had all the money I could spend it would not be hard to convince myself that I need another navy dress or white jacket or whatever.

    3. At the end of the day if you are partial or not to what Kate's fashion statement is for a particular event she is always put together even if there is an item that we would change. But, Kiwi Gal and RachelZA I have often thought what you have both expressed. When is it enough when it comes to clothing regardless of budgets. I have made this statement before and I even question the amount of new jewelry she purchases. It is beyond reality. Kates last two pieces that she wore for the BAFT roughly come to $20K American. My thought was give that twenty thousand to the Art Room to keep them going. I like most love beautiful things and as I am much older I have been lucky to accumulate lovely important pieces of jewelry for both everyday, casual and formal events. Kate on the other hand seems to purchase pieces as she does coats. I think this is an area she should give more thought to. I don't see any other member of the RF wearing the amount of jewelry she does on a daily basis. The occasional low end bobble does not take away from what she has and could choose from.

    4. Correct me if I’m wrong. Does the royal family actually give money to the charities they are patrons for?
Alao, it’s funny how different our opinions are, because I always feel like Kate repeats the same jewelry over and over and over!!

    5. Kate should take a leaf out of Anne's book.

    6. This criticism can be applied to any member of any RF, or former members too. The amount of money any royal has on clothes and accessories at any visit is scandalous. That said, there was a link provided a couple of posts ago that explained why the Art Room was not a sustainable project. Even with Kate’s 20K donation. So please can everybody stop saying that one of Kate’s patronages-it was not- has closed because she has not done enough for them?

Except of course for photog Arthur Edwards who was in several of the videos rushing forward to get his place for photos. Those videos showed me how surrounded W & K are when they walkabout. I like the whole look with the military max coat, appropriate for the weather, I have learned thur the years in the winter time with the high winds to purchase a nice long double breasted coat without the slit in the back, it helps with cold and wind without it flying out in the front and back. It is always harder to find a coat without a back opening, I will not purchase a winter coat with an opening in the back.❤️

  42. Seems that due to Kate's dedication to working with children and causes that help them, along with how such a natural she is around them, she has been dubbed the "Children's Princess". A very fitting nickname for our Duchess Kate.

  43. Did you guys here the news about Peter and Autumn Phillips? I hope the 2020’s do not replicate the Royal events of the 90’s
