The Cambridges Arrive In Ireland "To Build A Lasting Friendship"

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge kicked-off their first official visit to Ireland this afternoon when they landed in Dublin.

William and Kate arrived before 2 pm on a commercial Aer Lingus flight.

The three-day trip comes at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. A meticulously planned itinerary will see William and Kate spending time in the capital first before travelling to County Meath, County Kildare and County Galway. Areas of focus will include conservation, sustainable farming and highlighting the richness and diversity of Irish culture and sport. They will learn more about a number of local organisations supporting young people and projects enabling them to learn life skills.

Kensington Palace said: "The Duke and Duchess will have the opportunity to experience a taste of modern and traditional Irish culture for themselves. Throughout the visit, Their Royal Highness will meet a broad range of people, including the President, the Taoiseach and senior political leaders, children and young people, and those working in the creative arts, business and charity sectors. The UK’s links with Ireland are extensive, and The Duke and Duchess are looking forward to building a lasting friendship with the Irish people."

A major security operation has been underway in Ireland in preparation for the royal visit. More from The Independent:

'The complexities of organising a royal visit to Ireland go well beyond handshaking and receiving bouquets of flowers. Organising tours for high-profile dignitaries in Ireland is a well-oiled machine by now, but visits from British royals reflect a complicated tapestry of history and extra measures are put in place to ensure an efficient security operation.
Temporary road closures will be in place to ensure smooth travel for the couple and the Emergency Response Unit (ERU) will be responsible for driving the couple around, although it is expected they will bring their own armoured vehicle.
As part of these security measures, prior to their arrival at certain locations, drains will be welded shut on public streets to ensure explosives can't be planted in them, sources have told the Irish Independent.
Royal protection officers from the Metropolitan Police will accompany the Cambridges, working in tandem with a team of 12 members of the elite ERU, who will oversee their day-to-day security and are trained in close protection and overseeing security for VIPs.'

The Queen and Prince Philip made a historic State Visit to Ireland in 2011, just a fortnight before William and Kate were married at Westminster Abbey. Hailed as "an extraordinary moment in history" it was the first time a reigning British monarch had visited Ireland in a century. The visit focused firmly on the relationship between the two countries and the themes of remembrance and reconciliation which the Cambridges will continue during this visit. It was a time not only to reflect on difficult and painful passages in history but to highlight the ties that unite both countries. Given the unprecedented nature of the visit, a £20 million security plan was put in place.

In April 2014, President Michael D Higgins reciprocated the visit, becoming the first Irish President to make a State Visit to Britain.

In the years since, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall have made a number of visits with the future King acknowledging the "incredibly kind and warm welcome" they always receive during a visit to County Wicklow last year. In 2018, shortly after their wedding, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex made a two-day trip to Dublin. During a speech Harry told assembled guests "It is easy to see why Ireland has such a special place in the hearts of my family and indeed, all those who come here." The Earl and Countess of Wessex also visited in 2018.

Today, William and Kate began their official programme by meeting President Michael D Higgins at his official residence Áras an Uachtaráin.

The Cambridges received a very warm welcome.

The Mail reports, Sabina told the couple "Delighted to welcome you. You've had lots of exciting things happening in your family."

The President's office said: "The couples discussed the close ties between the people of Ireland and Britain and the importance of continuing and deepening close relations between all of the peoples of these Islands. President Higgins, Sabina and Their Royal Highnesses spoke of the challenges ahead, including the implications of the UK's departure from the European Union and the importance of continuing to build on the foundations of the Good Friday Agreement."

The statement continued: "They also discussed the global challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss and the urgent need to revisit the fundamentals of how we organise our economies and societies if we are to tackle these existential threats in a meaningful way. The importance of removing obstacles that inhibit young people from building their skills and realising their aspirations for a truly fair and sustainable world, and the particular importance of responding to the vulnerabilities of young people was among the other topics discussed."

They were joined by Britain's Ambassador to Ireland Robin Barrett and Ireland's Ambassador to Britain Adrian O Neill for afternoon tea.

Aras an Uachtaráin, formerly the Viceregal Lodge, is the official residence and principal workplace of the President of Ireland.

It is located off Chesterfield Avenue in the Phoenix Park in Dublin.

The building, which has ninety-five rooms, was designed by Nathaniel Clements and completed in 1751. The office of President of Ireland was created in 1937. In 1938, the first President, Douglas Hyde lived there temporarily while plans were made to build a new presidential palace on the grounds. The outbreak of World War II saved the building, which had been renamed Áras an Uachtaráin (meaning house or residence of the president in Irish), from ruin, as plans for its demolition and the design of a new residence were put on hold. By 1945 it had become too closely identified with the presidency of Ireland to be demolished, though its poor condition meant that extensive rebuilding of parts of the building were necessary, notably the kitchens, servants' quarters and chapel.

A fabulous shot of the foursome by James Whatling.

The couple had the opportunity to meet the Higgins' Bermese Mountain dog Bród. His partner in crime Síoda was under the weather with a sore paw today, which meant extra attention for the adorable pet, especially from the Duchess :) Kate said "He's lovely. How old is he?".

In fact, the presidential pups are an important part of the welcoming committee at the residence and have a history of charming members of the royal family. The Sussexes were very taken with the pair during their visit.

And the Countess of Wessex was equally impressed when she met them in 2018.

The Duke and Duchess had the opportunity to ring the Peace Bell. Unveiled in 2008 by then President, Mary McAleese, the Peace Bell was designed to mark the 10th anniversary of the Belfast Agreement.

A video from the visit.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge retraced the Queen's footsteps at the Garden of Remembrance.

The Queen laying a wreath at the poignant garden in 2011.

The message on their wreath read "May we never forget the lessons of history as we continue to build a brighter future together".

The memorial garden is dedicated to all those who gave their lives in the cause of Irish freedom. The focal point is a statue of the Children of Lir by Oisín Kelly, symbolising rebirth and resurrection.

The Duke and Duchess observed a minute's silence to pay their respects.

The couple met Minister with Responsibility for Defence Paul Kehoe, Deputy Chief of Staff Major General Sean Clancy and Brigadier General Anthony Cudmore.

Victoria Murphy reports:

'Crowds had gathered on the streets overlooking the garden and a cheer went up when the couple arrived. Among them was Melissa Garza from Texas, who has lived in Dublin for 11 years. “It was just lovely,” she told T&C afterwards about seeing the couple.
“They came by and they smiled at the crowd of us that were up here. And they were very sombre, in the mood for what they were doing here today.” She added that she thought it was “important” that they followed in the Queen’s footsteps and made a visit to the garden.
Hilary Graham, a retired teacher from Monaghan, also spoke about the Queen’s trip. “She changed everything when she came here. She spoke in Irish on the second night of her visit and from then everyone loved her," she said. “It’s very important for them to come here as they’re a future King and Queen. They will make a marvelous King and Queen.”
At the garden, poem "We Saw A Vision" by author Liam Mac Uistín is printed on a stone wall. It ends with the words: "Bondage became freedom and this we left to you as your inheritance. O generations of freedom remember us, the generations of the vision."

From there, the Duke and Duchess travelled to Government buildings where they met outgoing Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and his partner Matt Barrett.

They signed the visitors' book.

More from the Mail Online:

'As the duke and duchess prepared to go into Dr Varadkar's office, the duke joked with his staff that the couple had 'brought some sunshine' and asked if they had been suffering from floods.
Inside the office, which is dominated by a portrait of the Irish republican leader Michael Collins, Dr Varadkar escorted William to the visitors' book and said: 'It's in Irish, but date, name and address.'
William said with a smile: 'Shall I put my address down as well?' Dr Varadkar joked that he should include his postcode, and William replied: 'Exactly!'

And enjoyed a conversation on a range of issues including plans for William and Kate's time in the country.

In a nod to Ireland, Kate chose a green ensemble for her arrival. The Duchess wore a bespoke double breasted forest green Catherine Walker coat.

A closer look at the distinctive black buttons which also feature on Kate's dress.

Kate teamed the coat with a lighter green Printed Silk Peplum dress by Alessandra Rich. The £1500 dress features a floral print, pleated bodice, structured bishop sleeves and peplum waist. Made in Italy, it's 100% silk.

The dress is from the Spring/Summer 2020 collection.

Kate wore her Emmy London Rebecca greenery suede pumps.

The Duchess carried the L.K. Bennett Dora Khaki suede clutch. It's currently on sale for £112 on the L.K. Bennett website.

The Duchess debuted a dazzling pair of Asprey Daisy earrings. The £17,000 pair are described as: "Individually set micro marquise diamond petals and a pavé diamond centre, all set in 18ct white gold."

And completed the look with her Jane Taylor crescent moon headband.

Later this evening, the Duke and Duchess will attend a reception at Guinness Storehouse’s Gravity Bar hosted by the British Ambassador to Ireland.

  1. I am looking forward to your coverage over the three day trip to Ireland. You always do a magnificent job. Kate looks nice in her green (nod to the host country) coat she is wearing on arrival for the first day.

  2. My first thought was - yay, darker hair. But then I noticed Kate had a trim again and I am *frustrated* lol, because I might never see Kate in my beloved dark, long hair again! What a silly thing to distract myself with while overwhelmed at work - I hope I will be forgiven for nitpicking and obsessing a little too much and I wish them a successful tour. I love the green colors and Kate's headband, I wish she chose some more repeated pieces (hopefully she will as the tour proceeds).

  3. Quelle Surprise!

    Kate wore green to Ireland.

I wish there was someone around Kate who could have suggested something different?

Imagine Kate in a spring dress featuring green leaves and maybe some of the flowers which grow in Ireland? That would have been so pretty and a spring look would make people think of nicer weather to come?

    1. It is 46 degrees in Dublin with rain in the forecast and they will be spending time outdoors, so a spring dress would definitely be out of place, especially since both are wearing long coats. I think this dress is spot on for their first day in Ireland.

    2. That is my thought of late, is there not someone to advise her on dressing. It is very much needed.

I agree. Green is expected...head to toe green is too much - and I love Kate in green. Can't decide whether I love the dress or not. I love some of the details, but yet another high neckline. Not so sure about the pattern, but I do like that it's a bold one. The coat's beautiful...but yet another double breasted Catherine Walker. Seems like it's kind of a tradition with Kate to wear that type of Catherine Walker coat on arrival on international visits.

I love this look! She looks beautiful in green, and I’m a big fan of the statement headbands. My family and I visited Ireland two Christmases ago, so it will be really fun to see her visit some of the same places as we did. We spent several days in Dublin, celebrated Christmas in a castle in Tipperary, then visited the Cliffs of Moher on our way to Galway.

    2. The headband is a fantastic alternative to a hat or fascinator that would be necessary for the remembrance engagement but awkward for the other meetings. Also, I think her face looks beautiful with her hair styled this way.

Anon 19:23 - You make a fantastic point about the headband being used suitably for the remembrance engagement and being fine for the other meetings. I had not thought of that (and im sure many others haven't) though the headbands do not bother me a bit, I think they show a bit of class and you are correct she does indeed look so beautiful with her hair kept back but still down.

  12. As I nervously await my trip to Ireland in two weeks (please British Airways don’t cancel flights from Phoenix to Heathrow and then to Dublin) I am gobbling up this Ireland tour. They will be visiting some of my favorite places. I laughed though at one article that said they’d be going to the National Stud in Kildare and that the Duchess is very interested in blood stock. Ummm, I thought she was allergic to horses? Never mind, there is an absolutely gorgeous Zen Japanese garden there and the horses are at a distance ;) Mille Failte William and Kate (my grandma’s nickname, she was also a Catherine, from County Cavan.)

  14. Green is one of my least favorite colors, but even I love this dress. It reminds me of when I first landed in Ireland; we broke through the cloud cover and I saw “that” green. I remember gasping at the beauty.

I too wish she’d rewear more items, but I’m guessing some would take offense. I fear everybody thinks they merit something new, but Kate has SO many lovely items and they need to be seen more.

  16. I wish she would stop wearing one color for everything, including accessories. The green shoes and bag are overkill on the green - black would have been much more sophisticated. Also...doesn’t she have like 100 other green coats? Love the earrings - perhaps a birthday gift from William 😁

  17. Stunning dress on Kate. I like the black belt on the model- it really helps you to see the lovely pattern and different tones of green. I don't usually comment on Kate's styling, but an updo would show off the high neck and gorgeous diamond earrings more. Besides, Kate always looks so regal in an updo. Has she taken a lot of length off her hair?

    1. Yep. I wish she had followed the lead of the model and worn a snazzy black belt. Goodness knows, she has the wonderful slim waist to show a fancy belt off to great advantage!!!

    1. I looked through as many of Kate's green coats as I could find and they all appear to be too short for this dress. Kate's dresses have been much longer in the last year or so, as that seem to be the style at the moment, and many of her older coats are a good bit shorter.

  21. Absolutely exquisite1 a beautiful look! Always amazed at the perfection of the tailoring of her costs and dresses! Love the coordination of the buttons!

  22. I love the activities and respect the couple are paying to Ireland and it's people (my people! I'm a dual Irish-American citizen :)).

Sartorially, though, this is just all too much. It's like the royal equivalent of Americans getting decked out in "kiss me I'm Irish!" t-shirts and green striped socks and leprechaun hats.

Lovely coat. The dress underneath is, frankly, a bit of a mess to my eyes, although I prefer the styling on the model with a wide belt, brings things back to earth a little bit. The smorgasbord of accessories, while each piece is individually beautiful, is jarring. The headband and hairstyle are juvenile.

She usually looks simple and beautiful on Paddy's Day - one of those looks would have been perfect.

  23. The detail of Kates's dress is beautiful. I can even appreciate the pattern. Unfortunately, Kate is consistent in taking away from a beautiful fashion statement by over accessorizing in the same or almost same color. This is not an example of monochromatic dressing. A black handbag and shoes would have been lovely. I wish she would look to Sophie who always seems to be spot on. Gratefully, Kate did not add a belt as a further distraction. Her earrings are beautiful but again I say I just don't understand the spending allowance on new jewelry at the level she wears.

I agree with some of your points, especially how this is way too much green, but I am glad she does not look to the CoW for fashion. I do not feel that the CoW is always on and she is a bit older, id imagine that if the DoC started wearing the clothes that the CoW wears it would be back to people saying the DoC is Dowdy and dressing beyond her years instead of others calling her Juvenile. thinking the earing's may have been a present, so no allowance needed??

    2. Annette New Zealand3 March 2020 at 20:07

Maybe she got the earrings for her recent birthday? I think her choices today were pretty and practical. She used to get flak for having her hair in her eyes, so a hairband is a practical solution.

      Delete
    3. Maybe the earrings are borrowed from the Queen. 🤷‍♀️I feel bad she gets so many negative remarks from her “fans”. I think she looks STUNNING as always! It’s impossible to please all of the people all of the time, so I hope she just continues to ALWAYS look elegant, respectable, regal, while making sure she will be comfortable performing the duties at hand! Thank you for the terrific, informative post, Charlotte!! ❤️👍

    4. I don’t understand the offense that has been taken over these earrings...are they more than I can afford? Yes. But I don’t begrudge her having nice jewelry of her own that is not on loan from the Queen. She and William have money of their own separate from allowances from the Duchy of Cornwall and her parents are wealthy as well. I’m betting these were a recent birthday gift from either William or her parents, and we will see her wear them for the rest of her life and then be passed on to Charlotte.

  25. Kate is beautiful in green! My loves are the coat, the dress (lovely pattern and colors), the new earrings (wow), and Williams green tie!! William and Kate really look so good together. I don't know much about the President of Ireland but from the photos, he, his wife and his dogs are adorable. He reminds me of my great grandfather who we lovingly always called 'little grandpa'! 26. Listen, I understand that Kate really appreciates theme dressing, and I knew she would come off the plane today in green, but I'm baffled that, out of all the green dresses available for purchase, not to mention her access to designers, THIS was the dress that she chose. (hair and coat look great, but just too much green. That said, hopefully it's out of her system now, and she and Will appear to be having a wonderful time.)

Also, Queen Elizabeth's visit in 2011 was the first visit ever by a British Monarch to the Republic of Ireland. The prior monarch visits were before to Ireland's independence from the UK. (King George V, 1911, visited as part of his accession tour of the UK).

I believe that's the real significance behind the Queen's 2011 visit, more so than it had been over a 100 years since George V had set foot on Irish soil. (and I apologize if I'm wrong)

To me the ensemble helps to produce lovely official photos showing both personal warmth indoors and respectful diplomacy outdoors.

    2. Thank you for calling it out as everyone seems to be afraid of. This dress is downright ugly. The print, the high neckline, the puffy sleeves, the peplum...separately there would be no issues. Everything together is a big no for me. This dress may be in my top 5 worst dresses for the DoC. The coat and the accessories are nice, and I'm unsure about the headband, but the dress is atrocious.

    3. Julia and Nicole, I couldn't agree more. Here is a gorgeous woman with (usually) great taste and lots of money to pick any dress in the world, and she chose this. My first reaction was an actual cringe with the words, "ugh...yikes!" Love the coat and the headband, but the dress is so brash and hideous. I just don't understand it.

  28. I was really surprised by Kate’s outfit choice today. Of course green but this dress is just not flattering at all. It just isn’t her, neither the headband. I don’t know. Usually she picks well, today’s choice isn’t a winner for me. Nevertheless, her genuine smile and happy attitude makes it not so important what she is wearing. A beautiful person inside out.

"You've had lots of exciting things happening in your family". Oh my goodness - that made me laugh.

The picture of the 4 of them walking and laughing is by far my favorite. What a great picture!!

There are a laundry list of things ill managed with the Kate's ensemble - to be brief all accessories, shoes including overcoat would have been better in black. The dress is rather busy and bold on it's own. I am not opposed to headbands and I do like this one on her. She is so pretty with her hair pulled off her face and probably practical in the weather.

I think she is dressed appropriate and seems like such a warm person. I don't mind the dress (though it did make me want cabbage for dinner:) but agree with others that a black jacket and black shoes and clutch would have given this a boost. really like the new earing's and I don't mind the headbands either, keeps the hair out of her face without a tight up-do. cant wait to see tonight's outfit.

    1. Lol! "..cabbage for dinner". I enjoy your humor, C in MT. It's almost time for all things Irish. I've wondered where in MT you are located. My brother has a great little restaurant
in Butte, which has a large Irish population, and he has started baking his famous Blarney Stone cakes for the holiday. They make and sell hundreds of them in the weeks before St. Paddy's Day. If you're within driving distance you should stop by the Uptown Café and pick up a few.

    2. Caroline, I agree... I too think black shoes, clutch, and jacket would have been much better. I like the dress on the model with the belt. 34. I loved the dress. I’m not a fan of the headband. I agree on the fact there’s a lot of green especially since it seems to me there are several shades competing. However, it is a lovely nod to Ireland. Not a fan of the evening dress. Not generally a fan of satin - for someone who remembers the 80s, it reminds me of prom dresses from that period. She is lovely though and hats off to them for their visit.

    1. I agree. I loved the day dress and coat, but not the headband. The headband aged her as did the evening dress which reminded me of the gold metallic dresses in the 80's as well, and with the long hemline ruffle--just a miss for me b/c it came off matronly to me.

  37. Well I am in the minority but I love this dress. The pattern is beautiful and I love the detailing, the sleeves and the pleats. This feels very fresh, modern and bold. Agreed that maybe black accessories (Black suede pumps perhaps) might have subdued the bold hit of green but I am okay with the green accessories. They are not matchy -matchy but pick up various shades in green in the dress for what I would consider to be a coordinated look! I love it.

  40. There’s no denying there’s a green theme at play. One gets blinded by it, and not in a good way. Individually, all the pieces could be nice (still unsure about the dress). But this melange is just the opposite of style. Can’t figure what happened here. Not to mention the lack of consideration for spending on extremely similar outfits (not sure there are 100 green coats in her wardrobe already, as suggested above, but I can immediately think of at least 4). I am surprised by how much this display suggests they are out of tune with the mood in the world. Even if the earrings are a private gift. I hope I am mistaken, usually they are sensitive and respectful.

  41. I believe there is too much going on with her outfit, she looks well-rested and happy to be there but unfortunately, the overwhelming amount of green in her outfit takes away the focus of their arrival. I think if she had worn a white or cream dress, it would have been great: the green coat and accessories would have been highlighted and been a nice diplomatic touch for their arrival, here it does feel a bit touristic.
I find the dress too much: pleats, bold fabric, button, high-neck... she gets lost in it in my opinion. Perhaps it was a back-up dress and she had to change into it for a reason? I also think an updo would have been nicer than the headband, it would have drawn up the eye while the headband seems to draw it down.
But otherwise they look happy and ready to visit Ireland!

  43. Thanks for the informative post Charlotte. I enjoyed learning more about Áras an Uachtaráin.
I'm surprised people are so upset about clothes! I don't see what the big deal is, take it or leave it. People have said the jewellery and another new green coat is excessive and insensitive to the 'mood in the world'. Kate overall does a great job mixing high end with more affordable items. In the end of the day they are royalty, part of that is wearing high end. I certainly didn't find it disrespectful that she wore expensive things when she came to visit my country.
And yes our president is like a lovely grandad. He is very endearing and people love him!

  44. It is just way too much green. There is making a nod to your host country and there is running around like a leprachaun/crazy tourist.
And I hate headbands with a passion. Maybe because I was born in the late 80s- many of those features (late 80s-lae 90s) that came back just make me shudder. She has many gorgeaus hats she could have worn. A headband will always look less polished to me (not even Blair Waldorf could make them fashionable). I have yet to see someone who can pull it off.
The coat is ok but why not repeat her beautiful coat from St. Patrick's Day 2019 or another of her at least 4 dark green non maternity coats for example. She has many timeless pieces but neither the coat (maybe with different buttons), the headband nor the dress will age well. The dress only looks ok from far away under the closed coat because of the colour pop but others have more eloquently made points what is wrong with it (hint: almost everything). Something pink, white/cream or a style like the big black scarf in Blackpool in 2019 would have been better and more fashionable.
