It's The Vampire's Wife & Statement Earrings For Guinness Storehouse Reception

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge concluded their first day in Ireland with a reception at Guinness Storehouse’s Gravity Bar hosted by the British Ambassador to Ireland.

The Duke and Duchess posed for photos upon arrival.

Their first day in Ireland saw William and Kate visit President Michael D Higgins, his wife Sabina (and of course their darling Bernese Mountain dog Bród) at the President's official residence Áras an Uachtaráin. From there, it was a poignant engagement as they retraced the Queen's footsteps by laying a wreath at the Garden of Remembrance which is dedicated to all those who gave their lives in the cause of Irish freedom. Their penultimate engagement was at Government buildings to meet outgoing Taoiseach Leo Varakdar and his partner Matt Barrett.

Tonight's reception was an opportunity to meet a range of people involved in the creative arts as well as sport, business and charitable sectors.

It was hosted by Britain's ambassador to Ireland Robin Barnett, who welcomed the couple earlier today and joined them for afternoon tea with President D Higgins. Mr Barnett has had a fascinating career since he joined the Foreign and Commonwealth office in 1980 as a desk officer for Indonesia and the Philippines. He has also served as Director of UK Visas and Managing Director of the Business Group in UK Trade and Investment. Barnett's career has also concentrated on Eastern Europe and multi-lateral diplomacy. He began his appointment in Ireland in 2016. Below, William and Kate are greeted by the ambassador.

We know William and Kate are major Game of Thrones fans as they have both said how much they enjoy watching the boxset. They were both delighted to meet Irish actor Liam Cunnigham who played Sir Davos on the show.

The Duchess met writer, broadcaster and teacher Sinead Burke. Sinead will be familiar to many of you as she was one of the inspiring women chosen to appear on the Duchess of Sussex's Forces For Change Vogue issue. Sinead is such an incredible young woman. She gave a fantastic Ted Talk in 2017 about the importance of design including everyone. I highly recommend listening to it. You can do so by clicking here.

Hello! reports:

'William asked Joe Mooney, an advance paramedic with the National Ambulance Service: "I bet everyone’s like 'I’ve got Coronavirus, I’m dying', and you’re like 'no, you’ve just got a cough'. Does it seem quite dramatic about Coronavirus at the moment? Is it being a little bit hyped up do you think in the media?" he asked.
"By the way, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are spreading Coronavirus!’” he grimaced in mock horror. “Sorry! We’re keeping an eye on that, so do tell us if we need to stop!”

William and Kate also spent time meeting young sporting stars.

And heard about a range of programmes and initiatives in the capital.

The Guinness Storehouse is a popular tourist attraction at St James's Gate Brewery in Dublin.

It has received over twenty million visitors in the past twenty years. It covers seven floors surrounding a glass atrium shaped in the form of a pint of Guinness.

Inside, there's a number of exhibits, restaurants and bars where guests can enjoy a pint.

The Queen and Prince Philip visited the storehouse as part of their historic 2011 State Visit which we chatted about in more detail earlier today.

The audience laughed as William said: "Ladies and gentlemen let me tell you it is not often that I find myself following the Queen to a pub. But I am looking forward to testing for myself the theory that Guinness tastes even better in Ireland than overseas."

More on William's speech from Independent.ie:

"Catherine and I are delighted to be here tonight and are both very grateful to Robin for his generous words,’ he said. "Ireland is a country that we have both heard so much about, so we are really excited to be here with you to see it first-hand for ourselves.
"In coming to the Guinness Storehouse, we are retracing the footsteps of my grandmother, who was shown how to pour the perfect pint here in 2011.
"On a slightly more serious note I just wanted to thank all of you in the room for coming here this evening. Thank you for all that you do to support the very special relationship between our two countries. It has been a pleasure to meet so many of you this evening who demonstrate the breadth of our connections across the arts, sports, uniformed services, education and research, and charity sectors.
We value it as we do your friendship and are committed to strengthening it further."

Time to sample a taste from the home of 'The Black Stuff'.

When it came to Kate's sartorial choices, Irish green was very much the order of the day. The Duchess changed from her Catherine Walker coat and Alessandra Rich ensemble into a sparkly emerald number by The Vampire's Wife.

The £1,595 Falconetti dress is described as: "Fabricated from iridescent emerald silk metallic chiffon the "Falconetti" falls to an elegant three quarter length, finished with softly gathered self ruffles at the hem. Slim fitting bodice is precisely shaped to flatter the figure. Three quarter length semi-sheer sleeves edged with ruffles." The dress is available in several colours at Matches Fashion and Net-A-Porter.

A closer look at the shimmering fabric.

Keira Knightley wearing the Falconetti in black and Alexa Chung in berry. Princess Beatrice wore a similar dress by the brand to Elie Goulding's wedding.

The label was founded by Susie Cave, the designer is married to musician Nick Cave.

More on the inspiration behind the brand from their bio:

'Taking its name from her husband Nick Cave’s abandoned book project, The Vampire’s Wife is the design vision of Susie Cave, former model and muse to the great British designers Vivienne Westwood, Bella Freud and Philip Treacy.
Inspired by her background in fashion The Vampire’s Wife offers luxuriously crafted, elegant and feminine designs in vibrant colours and unique fabrications. Over the last 18 months The Vampire’s Wife have created a collection of clothes that - solely through word-of mouth and a rapidly growing  Instagram following - have been sought out by a range of high profile clients including Cate Blanchett, Kate Moss, Florence Welch, Ruth Negga and Kylie Minogue and have been seen at red carpet events across the Globe.
On the back of this high profile interest, Matches Fashion have bought the full Vampire’s Wife collection with orders selling out and rapidly increasing. Susie’s ultimate vision is to make  high quality, easily-wearable clothes for all women.'

Kate wore the Manolo Blahnik BB pumps in dark green velvet.

And carried her Wilbur & Gussie Charlie gold glitter clutch.

The Duchess completed the look with a pair of statement earrings from H&M (with thanks to Giulia). They retailed for about £10 before going on sale and selling out.

Gabi correctly noted they were first worn for the Royal Foundation dinner in 2018.

Tomorrow we'll see the Duke and Duchess carry out a number of engagements in Dublin, Kildare and Meath. The full itinerary will be released in the morning. What do you think of day one?

I've not commented much recently! No particular reason, just fell out of the habit. But I've been following stil! But this brought me back! I've been hoping she would wear this brand for so long! And she's so stunning in this colour! (And wow, this look is certainly an improvement from earlier in the day!!)

Important tour and I still enjoy following along with all their work but these many years in it's not much to comment on that I haven't said before really!

    Hi everyone by the way!

As for Kate's look I like the green outfit she wore earlier in the day,, but now it's looking like Kermit the green. I'm actually thinking she will wear green for all the three days they will visit,,

Hi Rebecca, so nice to find your comment here once again! 😍
I agree the colour suits Kate; I like the look... from the waist up. Love her hair.

  2. I cant decide which green dress she wore today is the worst. I just cannot process it right now. Those sleeves and the whole design takes me back to 1980s. And her heavy eye makeup is back too. *Sigh!*

    1. I think the same. The style is so old I really would prefer some fresh dresses for the spring.

    2. If Letizia was wearing any of these dresses you would all be saying that she looks so chic. The two dresses and the headband are super trendy right now.

    3. I am totally with you, I thought exactly the same. Maybe she is celebrating some kind of St. Patricks Day / carneval?

      Delete
    4. I feel the exact same. The first outfit just screamed, I'm in a St. Patricks Day parade! And now this feels like, Mardi Gras!! And usually, I love, love her style. This is all just a total miss for me.

    7. Caroline for some reason people here have decided that Kate’s dresses are from the 80s whereas Letizia’s similar dresses are trendy. I can link several Letizia’s looks here to compare if necessary...I’ve also explained down on the comment section why Letizia is not the best example to follow.

    8. anon 20:59, I agree with you, definitely Letizia's dresses! The first one, AR, is typically the kind of dresses she wears. And I hope Kate doesn't follow her too closely. That being said, I very much like the evening dress, so glamorous.

  3. Love this dress!!! She looks great in green and always nods to her host country!

    1. Honestly I think there’s nodding to your host country and then being really on the nose and almost stereotypical. I have not liked either of these dresses today partly because they don’t feel like a subtle nod or acknowledgment at all. It’s almost an oversimplified “Ireland equals green!”

I also feel like she has fallen a bit into very dated looks, and not in a cool retro way. I’d love to see her follow the examples of Crown Princess Mary or Queen Letizia. Both can bring a dignified look while still looking their age and trendy (which I don’t mean like In the Hollywood way, but in the sort of stylish way it that makes sense)

    2. Anon I think you're right with the comment on sterotypical dressing, I think it was too much green for 1 day in Ireland, not to say Kate doesn't look lovely she does.. but I think it went a little too far today. Yes I think she needs to find Mary or Letizia's stylists for a bit of help on tours.

      Delete
    3. Letizia’s has never worn a local designer in any of her tours, with the exception of a Michael Kors dress in the US, one that Melania had already worn. She had a Spanish designer make a Moroccan caftan for her, the same way K had an English designer making a Pakistani dress. She mostly wears CH and HB in Spain so not, I don’t think she’s the best example on fashion.

    1. Princess Beatrice's dress was a similar version called the Veneration, with two tiers of ruffles on the bottom of the dress, and more ruffle detail on the sleeves. Unique look for the Duchess, nice to see her try different designers, especially one with an edge and a specific aesthetic. Good for Kate!!

I see no shoulder pads, which sit flat across the shoulder, I believe those are the hideous puff shoulder sleeve deal that sit at the edge of the shoulder and raise up, I remember having to wear a dress like that for one of my sisters weddings back in 94! lol.

Hmmmm. well, I think now its for sure too much green in one day. if she would have had black accessories earlier maybe then it would not seem too much? this is reminding me of a mermaid, not a fan of the bottom hem. has she dyed her hair? it seems so light and more red. the earlier outfit is for sure winning IMO. Maybe this dress has great movement and I just cant tell?! will wait and see more photos, maybe ill like it more. but still hoping for no green tomorrow.

    1. Yeah the ruffle on the low hem seems to age the dress and makes it matronly plus the fabric which totally reminds me of the gold lame dresses so big in the 80's.

  19. I like the dress by the brand Vampire’s Wife. But the earrings and clutch do not go with that dress - pairing such vibrant metallic green with gigantic earrings and a metallic clutch of lighter colour (gold, silver??) is a mistake as the end result resembles a Christmas tree. Having examined Kate’s style since 2010 it is safe to say that accessories are not her strong suit. Today’s green clutch was a also real nightmare. I loved the coat, the dress by Alessandra Rich (although I would have suggested wearing also a belt) and the headband. But that green clutch looked so weird against the dark green coat.

    1. I think I agree here, I really love the green dresses from today but I think its the accessories that are just keeping it away from being perfect. I'm not a fan of the headband maybe if her hair was softly pulled back with the headband rather than tightly it may have looked better.

  26. Love the metellic green of the dress for this evening event. Kate's make-up, especially her eye-make-up is beautiful. I sincerely hope to see some colour other than green for the rest of her events. Although Kate looks wonderful, I think she has rather overdone the monochromatic for one day.

  30. We Irish like our green, especially so close to St. Patrick's Day so I say bring it on! I see there is already criticism of Prince William addressing head on the coronavirus discussion. I can't help but agree with what he said, having talked to several of my friends who are healthcare workers. Like any virus, coronavirus can be fatal to those who are in fragile health and we should all take precautions. It's actually a good reminder to not travel when you are sick, which we have been told over and over for the past several years. But I am sure William will be roasted about it. Maybe he should have said nothing but the Family has been roasted for not saying anything about things too so they can't win.

    3. I have a question for those who don't get William's joke. Don't you laugh and joke about Corona virus yourself? Where I am it is starting to be quite serious, but we laugh all the same. How could we not as it is the principal conversation everywhere? Laughing and joking even in dramatic moments is what keeps people going, at least people who have a sense of humor. If we all started to whine it would be unbearable.
I do agree that humor is cultural and as such tricky, but here William's brand of humor was perfectly in line with that of the people he was meeting.

  34. She looks gorgeous. I would prefer a shorter dress on her, I would have removed the ruffle bottom. I usually do not like inexpensive jewelry but those earrings look fantastic with that dress. She and William look wonderful and were lovely in their interactions and speeches.

  35. Williams coronavirus joke is really not funny at all.

  36. I like the fabric for an evening event. However I am not loving the ruffle at the bottom or the fussy sleeves. I’m glad that she is wearing different brands, just not my favorite.

  37. I am incredibly disappointed in William making a joke about Coronavirus. It is not funny to those who have been infected, died or had businesses interrupted. He should know better and it is such a junior move. Fashion doesn't compare to that statement.

    1. He did not make a joke about coronavirus. He was commenting with health staff the hysteria that’s been going about it and that doctors, nurses, etc suffer daily since some hospitals are collapsed by people with no symptoms believing they are infected.

      Delete
    2. Agree Anon 12:44, it was not a joke but a comment, a rather practical one about a very serious concern. There is a fine line where hysteria becomes panic and here is where clearer heads need to prevail. We need to listen to the healthcare workers about our role in helping to not spread the virus....good handwashing folks. This is not a bacterial sickness but viral and good cleansing is critical. Hand sanitizers need to have a higher percentage of alcohol to be effective.

      Delete
    3. I personally don't find what he said super offensive. I work in a hospital and sometimes we healthcare workers banter with each other about this stuff, especially when the media blows it up and creates a panic situation. That being said I can see why some people would be bothered by what he said and I think someone in his position needs to be extra extra cautious about what they say about these topics even though he can relate. No one is perfect, so lets move on.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Oh dear. I often feel like I am the only one that is not too happy with her fashion choices but this time it seems I am not in the tiny minority.
That is just too much green. This way of connecting to your hosts country is way to simplified. Sorry but if she wnats to make this effort, than she needs to put more consideration in it. A different colour with a piece of jewelery that holds some significance- one shamrock broche or earstuds would have been beautiful. Or a clutch emboiderd with shamrocks or shamrocks, roses, thistles and daffodiles to represent all four countries and their bond would have been a better choice after the all green day look.
I really don't like the dress. And I don't think I have liked it on anyone ever. It looks like a cheap carnival dress. The Bombette Dress or the American Chevron dress would have looked better. But the material is just cringe.
Fashion wise, this is not a great start.
I fear we will see a tiny shamorock print on a long little hpuse on the praire dress next.
Kate has a tendency to overdoe it. But I think this is in the top 5.

  49. I agree - too much green!! But I am thinking the evening dress probably looks much better in evening light than it does in the photos - possibly reflecting flashlights from the cameras? The colour is called emerald, but a treu emerald should have a stronger blue tone - it looks more "olivey" than
emerald. That said, my personal taste favours this dress in black and white but not in either the red or the green - no matter which accessories are worn with it!!
The print on the day dress is so busy, and doesn't flatter the beautiful cut of the dress.
Love the hair - never mind the $1,000,000 smile!!

  50. Charlotte, does anyone know where W & K stayed last night? And tonight, same place? Maybe for security reasons no one will know until after they have gone.

And to those who feel that William was making a joke about the coronavirus--he said it ex-healthcare worker (ambulance pilot) to healthcare worker. I am sure plenty of people--well, maybe it was only me--was wondering what precautions W & K had taken flying across. And the idea of meeting all those strangers and shaking hands. I had wondered if Kate would wear gloves, I see she hasn't. I wondered how Kate would feel as a mother of littles and as the daughter-in-law of fragile elderly folk. So I for one appreciated that he was honest about it, that he said they had talked to healthcare folk about it and were following their guidelines. And, as an ex-ambulance pilot he would know all about people's feelings and worry about sickness and in the past he has commented very soberly about it. But, truthfully, people die every day of flu and the effects of colds. And people clog up waiting rooms because they think they are ill while people who ARE really ill might have to wait way back in line. If his comment got people talking sensibly about it, I think that's great.

  52. The more I look at it the more I like this dress. But I have to agree with everyone who is saying it was just to much green for one day. Either the dress under the coat should have been a different colour or she should have worn a purple or black or even the red version of the Vampire’s Wife dress.

  55. Oh my. She really went Elton John all the way. Only thing missing is some glittery purple oversized glasses, plus I suppose, the artistic talent! What is going on with her Irish visit? She doesn’t typically get it wrong 2 outfits in a row. Did she loose a stylist? Did she loose a bet or challenge with someone and had to wear whatever they chose? Cause to me, this isn’t Kate. She is such a lady almost every time. CH

If you do not wish to use the sign in options, simply select the "Name/URL" option on the drop down menu and insert your name, and if you wish the country/state you're from. You can leave the URL blank.

If there are a large number of comments, it is necessary to click the 'Load More' button at the end of the comments section to see the latest additions.
