Kate Brings Back Favourite Pre-Engagement Coat For Busy Day In Ireland

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge carried out several engagements in Dublin, Kildare and Meath during their second day in Ireland.

Their first port of call was mental health support service Jigsaw in Dublin's Temple Bar district.

As the National Centre for Youth Mental Health, Jigsaw work across the country to ensure that no young person feels isolated, unsupported or disconnected. Through education, training, early intervention, adopting a holistic approach and strengthening ties in communities across Ireland they are striving to help teenagers through their services.

More from Jigsaw: "Mental health problems are the largest single source of ill health in our young people. We know that young people in every community up and down the country are seeking support and somewhere to turn to. In Jigsaw, they have somewhere."

William and Kate heard about their initiative One Good Adult which highlights the importance of one good mentor or role model in a young person's life. Dr Joseph Duffy, Jigsaw’s CEO said: "Today was all about shining on light for the need for an increased focus on youth mental health services and supports. It’s a reminder to us all that we can all be that One Good Adult in a young person’s life. Having exemplary role models such as Their Royal Highnesses, The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge express this in such a genuine way is really encouraging for all of us at Jigsaw."

More from the organisation:

'Alba Mullen, a youth representative on the Jigsaw Board of Trustees said, “I was so struck by the similarities in our community work in Jigsaw and that of Heads Together, the campaign The Duke and Duchesses spearhead in the UK. I really hope this is the start of an ongoing conversation. Supporting young people’s mental health in places where they learn, live, work and play is crucial. It’s all about a collective effort.”

A video from the visit with footage from a group conversation on mental health.

Afterwards, William and Kate walked down "Love Lane" in Temple Bar.

The ongoing project was commissioned to reanimate the lane-ways in Temple Bar by Anna Doran.

The street art features a range of quotes written on tiles inspired by lyrics and poems. They include "Kiss Me" and "You Know I'm Such A Fool For You" by The Cranberries and "As I Am, As I Am, All Or Not At All" by James Joyce.

From there, William and Kate travelled to County Kildare to visit Extern, Ireland's leading social justice charity at their respite centre, Savannah House. Last year, the Duke and Duchess visited their Northern Ireland arm in Fermanagh.

Extern said: "Operating in 27 counties across Ireland, each year Extern supports over 20,000 people to change their lives, including young people and families facing challenges in their lives, people who are homeless, people living with mental health issues, people with an offending past, people living with problem drug and alcohol use and minority communities. One of four family respite centres operated by Extern, Savannah House has welcomed over 2,500 children from across Ireland since opening its doors in 2011. It offers children who would not otherwise get the chance of a break, to avail of some time away, while others can come to stay when they are facing challenging situations at home, or in care, and while they are being supported on one of Extern’s programmes."

Before getting to work in the kitchen, William and Kate travelled to a nearby convenience store in the village of Prosperous with two young people to get supplies.

Hello Kildare!

The royal arrival caused quite a bit of excitement :)

It's always such a delight to hear from readers about their experiences meeting the royals. A lady named Fiona met Kate in Prosperous with her sister Sinead today and kindly got in touch. She said Kate was "stunning in person and very friendly".

Prince William greeting locals.

When Donna Malone met the Prince and requested a selfie, William was more than happy to oblige. We often hear about 'selfie bans' or 'selfie etiquette' during walkabouts, but it is very much at the discretion of each royal and they do make exceptions. With security so high, we haven't seen as much interaction with the public as we usually do on overseas trips, so it was a great surprise for locals in the Kildare village. Donna called William "a really nice guy".

Back at Savannah House, it was apron time as William and Kate helped prepare vegetable soup and cookies.

Kate got to work on the soup whilst William helped the boys prepare cookies.

A game of ping pong was next on the agenda.

Speaking about the visit, Charlie Mack, CEO of Extern, said:

“It was a tremendous honour to welcome The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Extern today on their first official visit to Ireland. It was also a unique honour for Extern, as Their Royal Highnesses have now taken the time to visit our projects, and meet some of the children we are supporting, in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
“The children we support are truly inspirational, and Extern is committed to providing them with the opportunity to discover strengths and abilities they never knew they had. It was wonderful to once again witness the enthusiasm and passion Their Royal Highnesses have for encouraging and empowering children. I know this day will live long in the memory of the young people and staff who were here at Savannah House today.”

Following a quick change, the Duke and Duchess travelled to County Meath to visit the Teagasc Animal and Grassland Research Centre at Grange to learn more about their pioneering research into sustainable farming.

They discussed efforts underway to reduce the carbon footprint of beef production.

Kate said "We learnt so much, thank you".

They were joined by a group of schoolchildren.

People reports:

“They talked about bringing their children over,” teacher Sandra Connolly says.
The excited children from Kiltale primary school told the royal couple about their healthy eating projects during the visit to Teagasc research farm.
Thaddeus, 11 — whose project was about sustainable farming and agriculture’s effect on greenhouse gas emissions — says, “They said they wanted to bring their kids over soon to show our projects.”

Kate was given a gorgeous posy as they left.

A video from the visit.

Back in Dublin, William and Kate enjoyed a walk at scenic Howth and took in stunning views of the Irish coastline on the cliff walk.

The couple stopped to chat to a group of locals.

A strong contender for photo of the day :)

Today's neutral ensemble hit all the right notes for me. It can often be tricky for royal ladies to choose an ensemble to navigate several varied engagements. For me today's look did just that. The stylish Reiss coat (which we'll be talking more about in a moment) has a very timeless feel to it and is proof a good quality coat is worth the investment as it will serve you for years. Teamed with a spot print blouse, black jeans and ankle boots, this a great example of an outfit ticking several boxes at once. It's smart casual, versatile and sophisticated.

Kate's Reiss Olivia coat was a staple in her wardrobe before she and William became engaged. The stylish ivory piece was worn on several notable occasions including Kate's 26th birthday (below Kate and Pippa arriving at Kitts Club for celebratory drinks). Kate also wore it for William's RAF graduation in April 2008, the Henry van Straubenzee carol service in 2009 and a pre-wedding rehearsal before the big day.

The Duchess wore her Equipment Slim Signature Polka-Dot Shirt. The £270 piece is described as: "Cut from lightweight washed-silk, it has a slightly loose fit and curved hem that looks especially cool styled half-tucked." Kate first wore it for a Family Nurse Partnership visit last September.

The midnight blue and white washed-silk piece is available at Equipment and Nordstrom. Get 15% of the shirt at ShopBop with discount code SPRING

The team from Kate's Royal Closet identified her jeans as the ZARA Premium High Wait Revolve jeans.

Kate's heeled ankle boots are the £225 Russell & Bromley Date Night style (with thanks to Middleton Maven).

And Kate's earrings are the £120 Daniella Draper Mini Cupid Hoops with baby shamrock charms (with thanks to Mari).

For the trip to Meath, Kate made a quick change.

Kate was suitably attired in a jacket by Dubarry of Ireland (with thanks to Caroline Parr). The Friel Utility Jacket in olive is described as: "An elegant country sports jacket, the Friel has GORE-TEX technology with a lightweight fill, meaning waterproof warmth without bulk. A belted waist gives a flattering, tailored silhouette that pairs brilliantly with stretch jeans and over a warm knit."

Laura identified Kate's blouse as the £99 Barbour by Alexa Chung Bella Shirt. It's available in various prints at John LewisHarvey Nichols and Bloomingdales.

Kate wore her trusty Penelope Chilvers tassel boots.

This evening, William and Kate will attend a reception hosted by the Tánaiste, Simon Coveney, in central Dublin. William is expected to acknowledge the "many wrongs" of Ireland and the UK's complex shared history during a speech.

  1. You're so fast! I love the coat. I love the colour and she has the coat since 2007. Amazing.

  2. I LOVE her outfit today. This is the best way to get away with wearing massively expensive (albeit nice) earrings - wearing an old (still in perfect condition) coat! It really suits her and I love the trousers, shirt and earrings she's wearing. I also really like her hair today. So enjoying seeing them out and about!

    1. 120 pounds is massively expensive? I don't think so.

    2. ABCD may have been thinking of yesterday's earrings or just assuming they were similar. Yesterday's earrings were expensive.

    3. I was thinking of yesterday's earrings - £17,000+! I reckon they were probably a present though.

    4. I agree, I am sure the reference was to the diamond earrings. Someone suggested the earrings could have been a gift.

I like seeing new items and repeats of fashion we have seen in the past. I am impressed Kate fits items of clothing from years ago and people sometimes comment she is too thin. IMO, Kate comes from a healthy looking family. If you see photos of her mother, Carole looked fit at Kate and William's engagement announcement and looks great today.

    5. I don’t understand why she has to “get away with” wearing anything? There is no rule that says she has to wear $10 statement earrings every day, or borrow jewels from the Queen. I’m willing to bet that her earrings were a gift from either William and the children or from her parents for her recent birthday. She will also wear them for the rest of her life and then pass them on to her children.

    6. Yeah I assume ABCD is referring to yesterday's arrival outfit earrings. Seventeen thousand smackers is enormously expensive for what amount to large studs. Gorgeous as they are.

These shamrock earrings are groan-y and way too twee for my taste.

  3. Really like this look. Yeah it's a bit plain but the coat, skinny Jean's, blouse, and black boots are all tried and true looks that suit Kate's figure. Also like that she cut her hair but ditched the frosted blonde highlights. I'd rather have Kate with shorter dark hair than the long frosted highlights look.

    1. Frosted? That is a specific look from some past decade that she has never worn....

    2. Highlights she had - I loved them . It was not frosted. Just a side note almost each time there was a major hair change Kate used it to deflect a pregnancy..... HMMMMM

    3. I really like Kate's hair when it's dark, what seems to be it's natural color. It is so flattering to her face. I did not and do not like her "blonder" highlights at all. Her hair looks great today.

  4. I really like this chic but casual outfit. Also, love her hair today. Perfect.

  20. My sister and I had the pleasure of meeting and shaking hands with Kate in Prosperous today, not fsr from where we live. She was lovely and so friendly to everyone and very pretty in person. William was also very handsome and did a lot of smiling and waving. Having followed this blog since the start, I really didn't expect to be posting an actual meeting with Kate. Love all your coverage of the tour.

  22. I have only one question - why, oh why isn't there any other boots in Kate's world other than those that are either made of suede and/or by Russell and Bromley? And those chunky boots by Penelope Chilvers? I have watched Kate's style since 2010 and I am so tired of those boots by Russell and Bromley and Penelope Chilvers. I have always loved Barbour's jackets, but I do not love that white coat.

  23. I'm a little behind and will comment on yesterday's outfits first. I really liked the fabirc of the first dress but did not like either dress at all! All the extra flounces and sleeve-work, etc really seemed unnecessary. I did not like the dress at all on Beatrice either. Kate is very pretty and of course slim so it's hard to look bad, but those dresses seemed like a waste of money and of very pretty material. I also thought the green coat looked to dark and drab. I especially like today's second outfit very much, and of course being in Ireland is so exciting!!

  24. I am so happy to see this coat again. It is one of my favourites and that is saying a lot. She has been wearing a lot of new coats this year, so it is nice to seen her bring something back from her “girlfriend” days.

But most of all I am impressed with Kate and her teams ability to pick outfits that allow her to go from one engagement to a completely different one with only a change of shoes or top. I remember her first few tours she would sometimes go through three or four completely different outfits per day and that always felt a little wasteful.

  25. How awesome Fiona from Ireland that your sister and you had the opportunity to meet and greet William and Catherine today. I'm sure you will remember and cherish this very special moment you shared with your sister. So very happy for the two of you.

  26. I think she looks nice and I love the Reiss coat always have.
I love the country look but good gracious. Don’t remove the coat. That Alexis Chung shirt looks like those frilly dresses I wore as a child in the 80s. I know that look is back and Kate is so slight that the ruffles and bows are not overwhelming but that is a trend I really wise would die. I am actually quite slim but my wide shoulders and wide rib cage just makes those shirts look even more overwhelming.
I am looking forward to seeing what she wears tonight, I actually loved the vampires wife dress just wished it was strappy heels

  27. I have to say that I have had some significant disappointments with Reiss. I've purchased two coats from the label and did so partly because I very much liked the Duchess's ivory coat. One arrived miles too big, though I had ordered it in the smallest size, and I had to spend a not inconsiderable sum of money having it tailored. I kept it because I loved the color and was willing to spend money on alterations, but I was mystified by the sizing problem. The second coat was truly beautiful but didn't stand up to dry cleaning. I use an excellent cleaner, and its staff were as taken aback as I was by the fact that the fabric around the pockets and elsewhere frayed badly -- and this was the first cleaning. Nothing like this had ever happened with one of my garments before. Finally, I bought a Reiss dress that I didn't wear for several months. When I had an occasion for which it was suitable, I discovered that the fabric on the back of the bodice was sagging, though it had looked fine when I tried the dress on upon its arrival. Apparently hanging in my closet for some time had caused the sagging, though again, I've never had that happen with any other garment. It looked terrible, and the dress was unwearable. It had to be a fabric quality problem, as with the coat.

Obviously the Duchess's coat has held up very well, but I thought it best to suggest caution to people who might be thinking of buying from Reiss.

  28. It's hard to compare these ensembles with the previous ones as this is casual - but I think every single part of all of these ensembles today suits her shape and style completely! That trench coat is a perfect classic - I want one! I love the previous nods to green, but apart from the Walker coat, the dresses have been a miss for me - too much frill and extras (including the headbands which I feel belong on children not adults!) leading them to look too much like dressing up dresses. Smart, elegant and classic suit her so much better than frills and excess I feel. Thanks for the posts xxx

  29. Absolutely love that Kate is wearing this coat on a tour! It was so flattering on her back in the day & it's just as lovely now! It's inspired me to give a 2nd look at some of my older items as I'm sorting through my closets! :) I also really appreciate learning about all of the organizations & causes featured today! :) Oh & I Love Kate's Hair Cut!! :)

  30. Yes! That is a gorgeous, professional, fashionable but still relatable look. I would have preferred shamrock studs, but whatever.
I love the coat. It is a timeless piece indeed and compared to a lot of other coats in her wardrobe not that expensive. The outfit is also a nice flashback to a time when her fashion was more in line with my own. Of course we grow up and taste can change but today is a great outfit I might want to duplicate for mysel at work. I wish she would repeat her old style more- it was perfectly appropriate and quite timeless- in the last years her style was more trend oriented and many outfits look pretty dated already. There were some positive examples the last week, so I have hope.

    1. I fully agree, I loved her earlier style much better than the one on display lately. This is a wonderful example of thoughtful re-wear and common sense approach. If she keeps it going, I am willing to be less disappointed by the mystifying things she wore yesterday. My only (recurring) quibble today are skinny jeans again on an official occasion. Yes, it’s outdoor (at least partially) and she is young, can pull it off, blah blah blah. But she is representing her Majesty. I can think of so many better options. Chrissy
