Duchess Kate Brings Back Jenny Packham Blue Gown For Place2Be Reception

Following this afternoon's Commonwealth Day service at Westminster Abbey, it was a glittering evening event in support of Place2Be for the Duchess of Cambridge.

The reception in celebration of Place2Be’s 25th anniversary was held at Buckingham Palace. If I recall correctly, this is Kate's first solo formal evening event at BP. We've seen several events with William and other royals such as the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange with the Countess of Wessex, but I believe this is the first time Kate hosted alone. We usually see Kensington Palace chosen for these events - it will be interesting to see if a mixture of both becomes common practice moving forward.

Since Kate became patron in 2013, she has been heavily involved with Place2Be. They've been involved in several initiatives and were chosen as one of the charities highlighted during the Heads Together campaign. They've been central to Kate's early years work and most recently benefited from the King's Cup regatta held in August. They are also charity partners for Mentally Healthy Schools and Shout.

Kensington Palace said: "Set up in 1994 by Dame Benny Refson DBE, Place2Be provides emotional support at an early age and believes that no child should face mental health difficulties alone. Over the past 25 years, more than 250,000 children and their families have been directly supported by Place2Be, which currently works with 639 schools across the UK.  Children’s mental health has long been a priority for The Duchess. Over the last eight years she has explored how experiences in early childhood often lie at the root of the hardest social challenges the country faces today. What we experience in the earliest years – from in the womb to the age of five – is instrumental in shaping our future lives. Last month the Duchess launched the survey ‘5 Big Questions on the Under-Fives’, which aimed to spark the biggest ever conversation on early childhood that will ultimately help bring about positive, lasting change for generations to come."

Founder Dame Benny Refson revealed the inspiration behind creating the charity. "When I worked as a counsellor with young people it seemed that much of their unhappiness lay in their early childhood".

The Duchess met two school choirs who performed at the event.

More from the Mail Online:

'During the reception the Duchess of Cambridge met two school choirs who performed at the event, as well as Place2Be supporters.
Pupils from New North Academy and Salusbury School teamed up with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra to write and compose an original song about self-esteem, creativity and their wellbeing.
Speaking to the children about their performance, the duchess said: 'You've written it especially for tonight? Thank you so much. What a treat for me.'

During a very nice speech the Duchess praised the work of Place2Be and reflected on her own journey with them. "You taught me, right from the start, that the children in your schools are only as happy and emotionally strong as the adults in their care. That is why you take such great pride in the work you do with your teachers and your parents. You taught me the importance of creating safe and nurturing environments within schools, embracing a holistic view of emotional well-being which permeates through the whole school system. You also taught me that it's the simplest things that make a difference to children. It's the quality time that is spent with them."

More from People:

'I have listened to experts, academics, practitioners and service providers who work every day to make our families and communities stronger,” she said upon launching the survey. “I wanted to dig deeper to understand issues we face and how best to tackle them together.'

A portion of Kate's speech (I'll add a full video once it's available).

The Duchess posed with students.

When we do our 'Styling Kate' series in August, there's a handful of gowns many of you adore and would love to see again. Tonight, your wish was granted (Now, it's not the strapless velvet McQueen but it's very close).

The Duchess brought back the beautiful sapphire blue Jenny Packham gown she first wore for a Bollywood Gala in India in 2016. The dress features intricate beading and a train. It's a design which highlights why the designer is admired all over the world for her evening wear.

Kate carried the matching clutch once again.

Kate's new statement earrings are by Erdem (with thanks to aceasisi). The Floral Cluster Earrings are described as: "Gold-tone brass earrings with a jeweled floral vine, a single pearl embellishment and blue crystal stud."

Wishing Place2Be a very happy 25th Birthday!

  7. Wow, she looks absolutely stunning! IDK but I think I like it better this time with her hair length and styled this way. What a great treat to see her twice in one day and knocking it out of the park with two fantastic repeats!! She sure does make transitioning from day wear to evening wear look easy. Well done Kate. cc

CeCe, although I thought nothing could beat the India look, I think I prefer it this time, too! This softer hairstyle suits the gown so well and Kate's beauty is really shining!!
I think what I especially love about this gown is the combination of the embellished upper part and the more simple skirt. The other Jenny Packham gowns Kate has worn, such as the one she wore in Paris, were "too much" for me - too glittery and too decorated. This one, however, strikes the perfect balance for me, plus I'm totally in love with the colour.
Place2Be truly deserves to be celebrated with such a glorious look, they do amazing work!
I like that Kate said "you taught me...". She is not only a great listener, she is also very modest and can acknowledge how the charity's work has had an impact on her over the years.

This look takes me back to sweet young 29 year old Kate Middleton who just became engaged to Prince William. I guess it's the color but also she's just radiating so much happiness in this first shot. So well done and a repeat I'd never expected to see again, working so nicely.

    1. You have this very down attitude on Kate’s spending on jewels. First of all, wealthy people can spend on whatever they want!! Secondly, she does not go overboard on the jewels at all, based upon her status. She often wears costume and affordable pieces. She also has a life that we don’t see and these may not really be new but new for us.

      Delete
    2. Exactly right Anon 14:20. Some more expensive earrings are often borrowed, and she has many less expensive pieces. We don't know if they may even have been gifted to her.

      Delete
    3. I suspect the earrings were a wedding gift from someone not exactly unimportant from Ireland & that Kate showed her appreciation by wearing them publicly in Ireland (for the first time).

  17. Apart from this being a glorious dress in which Kate looks stunning, I can't help thinking about the children who are present who must be feeling like they are seeing a 'real princess'. Fairy tales ensure that beautiful, sparkly gowns and jewellery, worn in lavish rooms, are what every child expects to see when they meet royalty! They must be so nervous and excited and proud. A childhood evening never to be forgotten.

  21. Wow! Just Wow! What a great re-boot! I wasn't a fan the first go round during the Tour..... but this is Amazing! She is just incredible! I just can't help noticing how she just seems to glide through events now & I harken back to remember that things weren't always this way for her.. wasn't Place2Be one of the first (if not the first) places she made her early or first speech? I mean just look at her now! I am typing this with just the biggest smile on my face! :)

    1. It is so important to remember that things were not always this way for Kate. When people say Kate is such a natural at this, I always want to remind them that she is not. She worked very hard to get to this place where she can just glide through events. And that makes it even more impressive.

    2. I agree Rachel. She has worked very hard and has learned a lot. She has taken her role very seriously and it shows.

  25. Actually this is not the first time she hosts an evening event alone. In autumn 2011 she had to step in place for Prince Charles in the last minute for an event, because he had to go to a funeral to Middle East, or something. But surely this is the first one that was planned like this. And she looked splendid, and like in her twenties in both of her engagements today.

  33. I think she looks great and I'm glad to have another opportunity to see the dress again, this time without the shawl. I think she did a good job styling it differently with the earrings and the shoes. However, I think she looks over-dressed. It's funny to see her in a stunning gown while the children are in school uniform! However, the main thing is that it looks like everyone had a lovely time.

    2. I agree that she looks a bit over dressed, but it was called a Gala Reception, which would call for a full-length gown.

    3. If you look at many of the men they are in black tie. She is dressed up but appropriate for the event and for hosting the event.

      Delete
    4. I thought the same at first and was reassured by all the men in black tie--the trouble is that the other women pictured are so casual!

      Delete
    5. Kate looks beautiful but I like the dress better with the shawl. Without it her torso looks a little broad (which I know it isn't as she is slender). The one picture with Kate standing with the kids does show a contrast between their school clothing and her ballgown.

      Delete
    6. I also had to take a close look at the photos. It definitely looks to me like many adults misunderstood the dress code.
It’s a shame the children did not have a chance to dress up. I suspect due to economic concerns, they decided on school uniforms so that parents didn’t need to worry about spending money for the children to meet Catherine. I’m sure they were super excited to see her looking like a ‘princess’!

    7. The children might have been there early in the evening for the music & speeches part, accompanied by adults in 'day wear' before the gala dinner started. I think it was mentioned somewhere that guests kept arriving.

  34. I know this is primarily about Kate (what a rewear!) but can we also talk about the Dame (that cape!) and the blonde woman doing intros (that dress with a bold

  43. I have made a little list and I think all these gown rank, Kate 2019 bespoke white Alexander McQueen with floral appliqué on the shoulder is my absolute favorite grown, then the 2016 the stunning bespoke chiffon silk royal blue Jenny Packham that I am so happy she wore it again now this year, then my other favorite is 2017 powder blue sequined gown by Jenny Packham that is more beautiful close-up and the bespoke 2012 Alexander McQueen white with gown gold embroidered hibiscus floral motif that she wore again this year another favorite, all beautiful.💙

  44. Since I was reminded to look at Kate’s gowns way back, I am adding two more, they are 2012 Gold Sequined with Silver accents with cap sleeves Jenny Packham Grown, 2011 Pearlescent Blush sequin-embellished Jenny Packham and she wore it again in June, 2016, would love to see again the 2012 Gold Sequined listed here, all beautiful. ❤️

We haven’t had any diagnosed cases here in our small city in southern Arizona but it’s probably owing to lack of testing. And now that people are traveling less (like me, no Ireland and England for several months) maybe it will be contained sooner rather than later. Thankful for a pile of books on Kindle, for streaming services for movies and series and for a good stock of food and essentials for the foreseeable future.
