Pride of Britain Awards: The Duchess Praises "Bravery & Selflessness" of Frontline Workers

The Pride of Britain Awards are always a special event on the calendar -- a night to celebrate truly remarkable and inspiring people across the UK. 2020 has been a year like no other, and in turn, this year's awards have taken on additional significance as everyday heroes came to the fore in so many ways. Last week, we saw a glimpse of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge filming a segment for their awards, and this evening it can be revealed the royal couple presented a prestigious award to NHS workers who have endeavoured tirelessly in the battle against the pandemic over the past seven months.

During Sunday's ceremony, we'll hear the Duchess praise the "bravery and selflessness" of frontline workers, adding, "Many have had to leave their families for weeks on end, some have come out of retirement to help, while others have stepped into new roles to play their part in the fight against coronavirus. It is not just the medical teams; all NHS staff have played a crucial role through this time. During lockdown, we joined people up and down the country to applaud the NHS and our key workers each week.  Their hard work still goes on and we remain indebted to them for all they do." William said, "The devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic has reminded us as a nation of how much we owe to the thousands of NHS workers who have gone far beyond the call of duty this year. They have worked tirelessly around the clock, with humility and compassion, in the most challenging of circumstances, putting their own lives on the line to help others."

'The six representatives were (from Barts Health Trust) Keisha Mills, an intensive care matron, Marion Jones, a health care assistant, and Dr. Simon Finney, an intensive care consultant, and (from the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust) Heder Lopes Landim, a porter at Barnet Hospital; Martha Sarpong, an ITU support nurse, and Charlotte Greenfield, a critical care physical therapist.

Martha Sarpong, an ITU support nurse who was redeployed to Barnet Hospital, said she told Kate she had three young children too. "Kate asked me: 'How do you cope with the homeschooling?' I said: 'Thank God my husband is a teacher.'"

"They were asking how we were coping generally with covid and we explained what we did and how our managers supported us."'
The piece was hosted by veteran ITV presenter Kate Garraway who has experienced first hand how COVID-19 can affect those closest to you. Very sadly, Kate's husband Derek contracted the virus in March and remains hospitalised today. Speaking recently she said Derek is "stable", adding there are regular "ups and downs" and no certainty regarding the path ahead.

More from Hello!
'Martha said: "I have three young children and Kate asked me: 'How do you cope with the homeschooling?' I said: 'Thank God my husband is a teacher. They were asking how we were coping generally with COVID and we explained what we did and how our managers supported us."

Charlotte said: "It's incredibly flattering to be one of the people to receive the Pride of Britain award on behalf of the NHS. What was really nice was that the Duke and Duchess were asking us questions, they were genuinely interested. I don't think Prince William knew there was a different branch of physiotherapy in terms of respiratory, so I was explaining to him. I educated him a little on my role. I explained exactly how it had been. I kept using the word sweaty to him, but it really was. They were absolutely lovely and kept asking genuine questions."'

The awards will air on ITV, Sunday night at 9 pm. For our friends across the pond, I'll share videos once they are available.

Winners on the night will include Captain Sir Tom Moore who touched the nation's hearts as he fundraised for frontline workers, raising a mammoth £100 million. Tom was knighted by the Queen in July. On Sunday, we'll see him receive a special Pride of Britain Award.

The Duchess was in a navy and blue ensemble.

Kate wore her Smythe Duchess Wool Blazer for the occasion -- a piece that has been in her wardrobe for almost a decade. It's available in a pethora of colours at Saks Fifth Avenue for $695.

Kate's vivid blue blouse is the Lisou Betty Rainbow Print Silk Shirt (with many thanks to Emily). The £250 piece is described as: "Add a feminine touch to your wardrobe with this pretty voluminous puffed three quarter length sleeve style shirt in a gorgeous shade of rich blue. A stylish yet cute number that would flatter any shape. It has pretty rainbow prints and would look great paired with our matching Salome trousers for a city chic look."

The rainbow has been a defining symbol of support for the NHS.

More on the background of the brand which has been worn by Gwyneth Paltrow, Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Charlize Theron:

'Lisou is a London-based fashion brand specialising in beautiful silk pieces with a twist.

Having grown up in Tanzania, head designer Rene Macdonald moved to the UK at a young age but always travelled back and forth to Africa where her family were based, a place that continues to influence and inspire her. A former stylist, avid vintage collector and self-confessed bold dresser herself, Rene has a unique way of combining unexpected colours and creating vibrant prints which makes each of her pieces special and stand out.

The Lisou collection is full of wearable, classic shapes with a modern twist and are made from the finest silks. All prints are designed in-house by Rene, which makes every Lisou print exclusive. One of our core beliefs is to make a positive global impact; to that end we donate the proceeds from one piece per collection directly to helping young Africans with medical and educational needs.

In addition to this, we run an annual initiative in partnership with local schools supporting creative arts in our local community. We believe in quality above all else, and a return to the days of slow fashion and treasure box investment pieces. All our products are designed in London, finished in Portugal, and delivered directly to you.'

The Betty shirt is a staple piece in the collection. Below we see it in pink lily with a red lip print and navy silk.

It appears Kate accessorised with her Alia hoops from Spells of Love.

And her Amaia Kids face mask in yellow pepper.

With George and Charlotte on half-term break from Thomas's Battersea, the Cambridge family did a spot of baking for a very good cause. In support of this year's annual Poppy Appeal, the family baked delicious poppy cakes which were delivered to the Royal British Legion's care workers over the weekend.

Care home residents enjoying the cakes.

We'll be discussing this year's Poppy Appeal in proper detail as we approach a very different Remembrance Sunday. We should hear details on how commemorations will unfold and the role the Royal family will play shortly. In the meantime, to find out more about plans for 2020, please click here.

Speaking of activities with the children, People reports the Duchess recently brought George and Charlotte to the Imperial War Museum:

'Prince George and Princess Charlotte are being immersed in mom Kate's love of museums.

The children, who have regularly visited the dinosaur skeletons and other magical treasures at the Natural History Museum close to their Kensington Palace home, were recently taken by Kate, 38, to the Imperial War Museum in London.

The site, just south of the river Thames, teaches and commemorates the history of British valor and hardship from WWI to the present day. During the outing, Kate may have told her children of the wartime sacrifices made within her own family.'

And finally, Kensington Palace have asked people to share a photo with #HoldStill2020 if you come across artwork, a billboard or poster from the exhibition. They plan to feature several favourites at the end of the week.

Several of you mentioned an interest in purchasing a potential future book, exhibition catalogue or items which may become available. A selection of posters from the final 100 are now available for purchase on the NPG website. On an entirely separate note, if clicking in the direction of the National Portrait Gallery, their book on portraiture's role in capturing and celebrating love is a fabulous piece of work -- it's visually fascinating. If considering a gift for yourself or a loved one, I highly recommend it. It includes several royal love stories, too. Love Stories: Art, Passion & Tragedy is available here. It's reduced by £10 on Amazon at present.

  2. Thanks Charlotte for this update of the Cambridge's busy schedule. I enjoyed the description of the beautiful rainbow shirt and am very impressed that Kate chose it. Fashion aside, it is touching that they forge ahead with compassion and understanding, including their children whenever they can.

Well, i like the whole look, except for the bottom of the pants - Way too wide and you cant even see her shoes, that should be a clue the pants are too long. imo it would have been more polished if the pants had a slight taper and were about 2/3 inches shorter. she is so close! still dont like this blazer from the back but from the front it looks normal. like the silk blouse and really like in pink lily. Love the photos of people with the photos! what a great way to keep this going. so nice to them out and about supporting the workers and giving out the awards. a true credit to the BRF. Thanks Charlotte!

  4. I waited a long time to see her in such a pant suit (wide legs)! Great!

  5. I love that she wore this suit - it's so polished! The shirt is such a delightful tribute to the NHS between the gorgeous shade of blue and the rainbows - how truly thoughtful!

  7. Great outfit for Dss Kate. Very business like. Now this virus is hanging on for dear life and have managed to alter the daily life of people all over the world. So her praising the Front Line workers is a good thing, we shall never forget their selfless acts of providing the help needed.

  8. The pride of Britain's is a great TV programme. The work the Duke and Duchess have done during the pandemic is amazing. I think they are the pride of the Queen and Britain.

  10. I really want to love this look, and from a distance it’s great. But then I saw the pant hems dragging on the ground completely covering her shoes☹️ I’m pretending that I don’t know that the blazer has that bizarre cut out feature in the back. The blouse looks good under the jacket since the weird puffy sleeves are covered. So close, but not quite there either.

The frontline workers are amazing. I feel such respect for them and also for people who volunteer (our situation is not good at all, the hospitals getting over-crowded and many of them calling out for help.)
I really like Kate's rainbow shirt. And I LOVE the poppy cakes they have made with the kids!! Kudos to them for including their children in supporting good causes and for doing it in such a natural way!

    1. Love the blouse, it's so appropriate, and so Kate. I'm with you about the poppy cakes, LOVE them, they look scrumptious and can only imagine the children had a great time making them! As to the frontline workers, ditto on all counts, amazing, respectful, proud. It's very sad that it has taken this pandemic to truly realize their efforts especially now, as the 'second wave' seems to be testing our every fiber. Stay safe Zora, our city too has made national headlines because of the number infected, and our hospitals have no more beds, tents are being erected in the parking lots. If ever we needed hope and support from all, its now. I am happy to read this blog and see the efforts of William and Kate, it truly lifts me up! Stay safe everybody, this is not a drill, its real. cc

I'm thinking of you, CeCe! Yes, this blog has a power to raise our spirits, and it is so important to remain hopeful!❤️
Charlotte, I'd like to thank you for your ongoing work on DKB and for cheering us up so many times! It is very much appreciated, perhaps now more than ever!

  12. I love the trousers!! (even though they are a little too long) I love the blazer! Together? Not so much. But she really does look great- and I love the rainbow print on her shirt. I love to see her praising the front line workers. Here, in the US, front line workers seem to have been forgotten with all of the political and social turmoil we have going on. I wish they could be brought front and center once again!

  13. I have no problem with her pant length, and certainly it is a style we have seen for many years now in the high fashion market. She looked sharp and the silk blouse is gorgeous, but at least in the photos I do not like the color of the blouse with the suit. But in person it may have worked better and it was very appropriate for the occasion. She and William are doing a great job these days.

  14. I just watching the Duke and Duchess give the award. Their thanks on behalf of the united kingdom to the NHS, Was heartfelt and very sincere. More poignant now, after the news broke that the Duke had this terrible sickness. A very wise decision not to release the news. The heir and the spare sick at the same time. Their genuine kindness towards Kate Garway was heartwarming. Who's family has been devastated by her husbands covid fight.

    1. It’s not a wise decision not to release the news. It seems cagey and manipulative. Every other Royal/head of state/head of government has been transparent with their diagnosis if and when it occurred. Prince William isn’t even in the realm of some of the global leaders who have contracted Covid with potentially huge impacts on their roles and responsibilities. So the fact that there was concern about worrying the nation is completely patronizing to me. And it’s not that I’m not sympathetic to his health, I just don’t understand the deception. I’m honestly baffled at the thinking here, but the royal family media strategy has been mystifying for years. This will be more of a scandal as to why his diagnosis was specifically hidden when no one else’s was.

    2. You can’t have it both ways. Either he is important enough as heir to the throne that there is public interest in whether he is sick or not - then there is an argument that with Charles and Johnson sick it might have added to panic.
Or as heir to the heir, he has no constitutional role, as you say lots more important people got Covid, but then there is no imperative to make it public. While you have to inform your doctor and people you were in contact with, nobody is obligated to make their covid status public.

So I can see why they did not announce it at the time, but I am baffled as to why not announce it a couple of weeks later. No fuss, no panic, no outrage.

I think behind all of this is a deepseated resentment from William that the public & media feel they are entitled to know everything.
The media might have portrayed the Sussexes as resenting media/public entrusion, while the Cambridges accept it. But those who have been following the Cambridges from the start knows that the Cambridges very much resent it too. They just learned how to deal with it. But in this case William decided he wasn’t seriously sick, his health is nobody’s business.

Is he right? I don’t know.

    3. I am on the fence about what was the 'right' thing to do, but don't think deception is the right word. "Deception is defined as an untrue falsehood, or is the act of lying to or tricking someone. An instance of actions and/or schemes fabricated to mislead and/or delude someone into errantly believing a lie or inaccuracy." It feels more like an omission and who knows there may have been a series of actions when this happen that need to take place, like a 'succession' plan implemented that the public isn't or wasn't privy to. If it was in April there may have been 'deepseated' fear as to the outcome and possible infection of the children/Kate. I would agree that announcing it weeks later as opposed to months later would have been a better option. The announcement is perplexing and maybe a little cavalier and dismissive (like an offhand announcement, 'oh by the way'), but wouldn't call it deception.

    4. Both sons of Diana were traumatized by their mum's experience. They just dealt with it differently. However, I don't think William and his advisors were as concerned with media/public reaction as they were with the effect the information would have had at that time on family members: specifically, the Duke of Edinburgh and even the Queen. We also don't know if this was completely his decision. It sounds more like a consensus. It is even possible that the government was involved in the decision to keep his health status private. It likely was.

I am interested in the timing of this "scoop" and the source. Who would actually have first-hand knowledge of William's personal health issues and who would have shared it with the press? And when did the scooper first possess the information? The timing of release? The six month old "scoop" effectively shut down talk of William and Catherine's many efforts to help their country during the past months, including the Sunday evening broadcast. No one is talking about Andrew or other royals the media have been focused on, except maybe Camilla's elephant statue and Covid sniffing dogs projects. Journalists who usually barely mention, if at all, Catherine's or even William's work have suddenly become interested in them.
Finally, I have yet to see any published information directly from KP. Just the paraphrased reports of some royal reporters.
      The Sun? Really?

First, I really ought to have far more important worries tonight—and I do. So maybe that’s why I am seeking to distract myself by commenting on William’s purported COVID illness. First, HE didn’t announce it now. Someone leaked it. My gut feeling is that he is furious. The source says that he said it at an event. That’s weird—why on earth would he have mentioned it at an event when he kept it secret? Second, we actually don’t know how many politicians/celebrities/royals have had it and not said anything. Johnson obviously had to announce it as did Trump. Prince Charles chose to say he had it because there may have been other people infected at the same event he was at. In fact, didn’t Prince Albert of Monaco catch it at the same event? My point is, there was no reason for William to announce he had it if the nation had just gone through the Johnson/Prince Charles stuff. There is already some clarification out from “Royal sources” that contrary to the first leak from the Sun, Prince William was NOT seriously ill with it. And finally, come on let’s give the guy a break. He has tirelessly championed the NHS, praised healthcare workers to the hilt, done Zoom calls, etc., etc. Can’t the guy and his family have some privacy on this one? For those who say that his saying he’d had it would lend some credence to the seriousness—I think the UK death toll spoke to that already.

    6. I am really surprised by this coming out now. While I don't think Wiliam's role is important enough to demand it to be made public, there was also no reason to not mention it casually. I doubt that it will stick in a good, look he powered through, was dutiful, way. People will start really looking into how they handled his infection. Especially as it seems his family and staff carried on like before. If people start digging they might come up with questions. And we all know that tabloids and other outlets have no problem creating things that aren't true. It seems also clear, that the BRF would have preferred it to stay private- so I am very intrigued who made it public and for what reason.
      C.

    7. The interesting thing is C that apparently William himself was the source of the leak, mentioning it in a conversation. Which make me think that it wasn’t so much a secret as private (as we saw with Bea’s wedding the media struggle with that distinction)
He might even have leaked it at this moment on purpose. With the UK going into another lockdown and the US election taking up most news, nobody except a few royal reporters seem to pay much attention to the fact that William was sick at some point in the past.
If this leaked in the summer silly season it would have been much worse.

    8. It is strange. Has there been a KP confirmation?
If it is true ( I am not sure for a variety of reasons) then why is it made public now?
I don't think there it is about right or wrong, it wasn't a lie, neither a deception. He just didn't share an information about his health. Was that a good thing PR wise? I agree with Rachel NZ that it would have been better to announce it a couple of weeks later.

I think he was wise not to publish. Bear in mind that the PM was ill and Prince Charles too, so we had an Head of state in her 91s and and the next heir justseven years old.
Add that Harry had just walked out. I think that was enough.

    10. I am a bit torn between the rights or wrongs in Williams decision not to go public with his infection. I can understand why he did not do it in the first place. That would have been a lot for the public to take in at that time.
But after successfully recovering like his father it would have been appropriate to go public with it. As you may know on these blogs I am not a huge fan of Williams leadership decisions lately;) for me it is to outdated not to show vulnerability as a leading man and to be very in control of things. Not being perfect isn’t weakness. But this is something a lot people need to grow into which is perfectly okay.

  17. Goodness how quickly we forget, or perhaps an indication of how we have all adjusted to living in covid normal. The world was a very scary place in March April. We had no idea how bad the pandemic was going to be, a bit like watching the approaching Tsuami wave and not knowing who was going to be swept away. There were fears the Queen had been infected. Charles was infected. Boris nearly died and lots of cabinet ministers were infected. Did we really need the speculation that with William also ill the king was going to be a six year old little boy. We certainly did not need that. So that was at the time the right decision. Easy to be critical now when we have all become far more understanding of the ramifications and dealing with Covid. We do forget how fearful the unknown was back then.

I agree, Libby. William dealt with it privately and didn't put a burden of more fear and speculation on the public. If he had had to be treated in a hospital, it would probably have been different but I think they handled it well and had a right to do it this way.

  18. HRH Prince William didn't share his private medical business. Absolutely shocking. Is he expected to share every detail of his life. Daily updates on his relationship with other family members, or when he last had an argument with his wife. Nothing can take from the very good work William and Kate have done since the beginning of the pandemic. How hard it must be to live under a microscope daily. I'm reminded of this because Diana's panorama interview is global news again. Any of his personal business he wants to keep private, should be respected.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I wonder if the fact of Prince William's illness was kept private in order to protect Prince George from intrusive speculations. I believe I read somewhere recently that he hasn't really been told that, in the normal run of things, he will be king in due course. Whether or not that is true, surely the simultaneous illness of his grandfather and his father would have caused a huge burden of interest to be laid on him, and deferring reference to his father'sillness may have been done to deflect that.

    1. I think you may be right, Cecilia! I never thought of that aspect. I have wondered, in passing, how much George knows about his future responsibilities. It's not my business to know, and from all accounts and appearances, William and Catherine are doing a wonderful job of parenting. I have no doubt whatsoever that they're doing the absolute best to give their children happy, healthy, and safe childhoods.

  20. The Duke and Duchess award to the NHS was the highlight of the night.I think that speaks for itself. They have been at the forefront for the NHS and mental health since April. They really spoke for everyone when given the award. I don't think there is anything sinister here. The sence of panic over the virus was a lot higher in April. If it was serious or the Prince needed to go to hospital, I'm sure a statement would of been released. People are very quick to judge him for not sharing that he had the virus. What a worry it must of been for the Queen, with Charles and William sick.

  21. I hope this is not against Charlotte's rules, but many of us follow Kate's fashion choices and make purchases based on items she has in her wardrobe.

Anyway, supposedly Kate uses Alice Bow insoles, and I received an email that two of their colors (solid red or solid blue) are currently 20% off with the promo code :KINDNESS. I buy these leather insoles to protect my shoes and boots and have been pleased with the brand.
