In normal times, the incredible 100 photos would be enjoyed in a carefully
curated exhibition inside the National Portrait Gallery. Alas, this year has
been the antithesis of normal. It was decided the most effective and
impactful way for the images to be shared was to quite literally do just
that - sharing them in local communities across the UK for four weeks. In
doing so, it reflects the spirit of the endeavour which saw entrants from
Oban in Argyll, Scotland to Delabole in Cornwall participating to offer a
glimpse into their life experiences during the pandemic.
When the chosen 100 images were revealed last month Kate said, "Hold Still
aims to capture a portrait of the nation, the spirit of the nation, what
everyone is going through at this time. Photographs reflecting resilience,
bravery, kindness - all those things that people are experiencing. The
quality of the images has been extraordinary, and the poignancy and the
stories behind the images have been equally as moving as well." The Duchess
and her fellow judges were "overwhelmed" by the response to the project,
which received 31,598 entries.
Their first port of call was Waterloo Station in South London where Hold
Still features on billboards.
The National Portrait Gallery noted, "Curated groups of portraits are
displayed in cities such as Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh,
Glasgow, Manchester and London. Many of the portraits are also on display
individually in the local communities where entrants are ranging from
Belfast, Liverpool and Southampton to Blaenau Ffestiniog in Gwynedd, Marston
Moretaine in Bedfordshire, Knypersley in Staffordshire Moorlands and Thorpe
Audlin in West Yorkshire. You can also see a selection of works on special
community screens in 1,600 Co-op food stores across the UK."
Nicholas Cullinan, Director of the National Portrait Gallery, said, "From
the initial concept to where we are today with this national living
exhibition, the Duchess has been phenomenal. She has been dedicated and
thoughtful and what we have is a wonderful and moving snapshot of the
compelling and varied experiences so many people have experienced throughout
the country."
William and Kate viewed 'The Look of Lockdown' by photographer Lotti
Sofia, "A representation of our daily dose of daydreaming that we do while
we watch the world go by without us."
The couple met a number of finalists at Waterloo Station. More from
the Telegraph:
'The Duchess of Cambridge gave a community volunteer a “massive shock” when she called him out of the blue to reveal his portrait had been selected as a finalist in her Hold Still lockdown photography project, he has revealed.
Sami Massalami Mohammed Elmassalami Ayad, a Sudanese volunteer at a community Food Hub in Hackney, north London, met both the Duchess and the Duke of Cambridge at Waterloo station on Tuesday as they viewed several billboards showcasing the final 100 images chosen from more than 31,000 entries.
He said: “It was such a joy to meet the Duke and Duchess and I can’t believe my picture made it to the final 100. I didn’t even know it was being submitted by my colleague at the food hub so it came as a massive shock when I got a call from the National Portrait Gallery saying the Duchess wanted to speak to me.
“She called me a few weeks ago and we had such a lovely conversation. She told me how she wanted to build a snapshot of how Britain was coping in the pandemic, but to show all sides of what people have gone through and are still going through.”
Below the portrait of Sami on his first day of volunteering at the
Children with Voices Community Food Hub in Hackney, London. Sami described
Kate as "really caring" and "dedicated".
A video from the visit.
From there, William and Kate visited St Bartholomew's Hospital to meet Joyce
Duah, a photographer and specialist oncology pharmacist at the hospital, who
photographed her colleagues as they were re-deployed to the intensive care
unit at the beginning of the pandemic.
The image of Amelia and Dipal by Joyce was entitled 'All in This Together'.
Joyce said, "Amelia and Dipal have been working hard as pharmacy technicians,
delivering vital medication multiple times a day to ICU. I've watched them
with such admiration for what they are doing and more importantly their
positive attitudes. They spend their precious lunch breaks encouraging each
other with humour and I think they are so brave. I decided I wanted to use my
photography skills to document some of their journey. I'm so proud of the team
and all they do and it's been a privilege to capture their journey during this
historic time. One of their practices is to write their names on their gowns
so that colleagues are able to recognise each other under their PPE and to
help the patients who are conscious to feel closer to their carers."
The Duchess said to Joyce, "Thank you so much for the image. It had such an
impact it captured the moment, it was a look behind the scenes. The story of
what you experienced is so important."
The video below features footage from the couple's conversations with
frontline workers.
As we enter a long winter and a challenging time ahead, seeing the images
depicted across the UK will be welcoming sights and reminders of how much
we've achieved already. To find your nearest display, please click here.
The Duchess was chic in a gorgeous autumnal red coat by Alexander McQueen. The classic cut and exquisite tailoring make this a fabulous addition to
Kate's wardrobe. She teamed it with a white top and a midi skirt.
Kate's gorgeous new bag is the
Grace Han Love Letter Small Top Handle Bag. The £1,595 piece is described as "a perfect companion with its elegance and
classic shape. Its distinctive envelope closure is an ode to Love Letters of
the past, present and future". The London-based brand was launched last year.
Kate's earrings are the
Daniella Draper Luxury Maxi Cupid Hoops (with thanks to What Kate Wore reader Stephanie).
The Duchess wore an Amaia Kids face mask in yellow pepper.
Afterwards, the Duchess changed into a navy ensemble to film a piece for the
Pride of Britain awards with Kate Garraway. Our reader Jean notes it appears Kate's wearing her Smythe Duchess Blazer - that seems spot on from the photos.
We'll hear more about closer to the date of the awards ceremony.
Oh, i love the coat! and i love that bag:) cant wait to see more!! Thanks Charlotte:)
ReplyDeleteLove the color of the coat and im still very firmly in love with the bag!! Agree with the others who think the coat is an odd length, but it does look good in motion!! im wondering if its cold there today? this would be a nice coat to have if it was cold. those are some of my favorite shoes she has but i do think boots would have looked better with the length of the coat. Her hair looks fabulous and did i mention the bag:)
DeleteNot so sure about the blue pant suit, the color is good, im just not sure why a chunk of it needs to be cut off at her behind, that just draws the eye to her behind and im not sure why that would need or want to be done??? (i mean she for sure has a very nice backside this just looks weird to me!) lol im a fuddy duddy:)
thanks charlotte for a Tuesday escape!!
I thought this was the L.K.Bennett coat called "Celeste" (sp?), since I have the coat in two colorways, but after looking at the pick-stitching on the lapels, I can see this is designer.
ReplyDeleteSome like the longer length and feel it is chic, but I think Kate has great legs and I tend to like her in coats that hit right above or below the knee. This is probably very old-fashioned of me.
Her hair looks fantastic!
I agree. I think the long length is tricky to style. It doesn’t flatter many people. I feel designers try to bring it back for three years now but it just doesn’t work on enough people to really get a grip.
DeleteI absolutely adore the colour though, but I think she could have repeated one of her gorgeous red coats (Carolin Herrera, LK Bennett, Catherine Walker or her old Armani one) and looked better. It’s all personal taste though. It might be trendy but In my eyes it makes her look much older. I come to the conclusion, with their changing roles she actually does this deliberately. Her private wardrobe looks pretty much the same since her engagement when you see the occasional snap. I still hope she might go back to her older coats as she can definitely look like a senior royal in one of the highest positions and still bring out her “younger” silhouettes. Posture and demeanour can completely change how an outfit is received. Dressing the part is a big thing in her work wardrobe and I feel we might see another case of Kate going a bit too far. But then- I could be absolutely wrong and she truly loves her latest style choices.
I very much love the Hold Still project. It will be a fantastic showcase of how the UK powered through while giving all the emotions a place.
C.
I think a correction needs to be made in relation to the shoes. The photos of the Duchess show a block heel while the individual image shoes a stiletto style.
ReplyDeleteGreat to see them out in person again. Kate looks gorgeous as usual, beautiful in red. It looks to me as if her shoes have block heels. Kate and William are indeed a promising future for the monarch.
ReplyDeleteLovely to see them out and about and loving the new coat. She looks very polished and professional.
ReplyDeleteHi Charlotte, are you sure about the ID of the shoes? It looks to me like she is wearing block heels, not stilettos.
ReplyDeleteI love the color of the coat (she looks great in red), and the matching of the red to the black shoes and purse. Having said that I strongly dislike the length of the coat and how it fits on Kate. It's just too long and overwhelms her frame. It also calls attention to her extremely long torso in a way her shorter, A-line coats did not.
ReplyDeleteGreat for them to continue to champion this and for the photos to be displayed in public around the country. I like the colour and cut of the coat but I do wish she would be more adventurous in colour blocking or contrasting. Great new bag! But I don't think those are the shoes she wore. Because of all the different terrain (look at the gravel!) she wore block heels (which made the long coat look a bit dowdy to me)
ReplyDeleteLove that coat. Gorgeous color and style. She looks wonderful. I think she wore two different shoes. In one photo the heels are a block style. Like her earings.
ReplyDeleteThank you Charlotte for your quick post, I have seen some more pics around Twitter DoC in a blue pants suit 👀
ReplyDeleteI love this coat, crimson is her power colour but, I feel it's to long, in the pic of Catherine just standing with William the coat wears her, just seems to swamp her. Other than that absolutely stunning as usual 😊
I'm not sure those are the right shoes? The photos look like a chunky heel?
ReplyDeletelovely post, as always!
ReplyDeleteyou misidentified her shoes - her shoes have a block heel, no?
Such a gorgeous coat! 😍
ReplyDeleteThank you Charlotte. Such a wonderful project and so nice to see it displayed billboard style so everyone can enjoy it. I think Kate is wearing her black block heel pumps, though, not the spike heel Rossi ones.
ReplyDeleteA stunning look! The coat is so perfectly tailored and the right choice for this appointment. Her hair do is wonderful. The Duchess is wearing her black Gianvito Rossi Piper pumps with block heels and not the stiletto pumps shown in the post. I think she is wearing a black pleated midi skirt, maybe from Zara.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Charlotte! This is such an amazing project. Capturing the unique moments from the lockdown is important both for those who took the photos and for the viewers. Plus, it is a testimony for the future generations; the value of the pictures will even grow in time.
ReplyDeleteKate looks absolutely gorgeous! I loved how the colour of her beautiful new coat matched the red London double-deckers :).
I also noticed how William let Kate take the lead when meeting the people and do a great portion of the talking. IMO this was his way of acknowledging that Hold Still was her idea and her project.
This project is so touching and absolutely love that they have taken it to the streets to display it for many to see. Your words are so true Zora, what a testimony and meaningful project for now and years to come!! Kate looks sensational!! Love everything about her look, the coat, her hair, that purse!! William and Kate are very in sync with each other and it shows more and more with each event, they are both supportive and compliment each other's endeavors in every aspect. It's really very nice when the person you love is also truly your friend and partner in life, at least that's how I see them!!! :) cc
DeleteMy apologies, the shoe ID has been updated.
ReplyDeleteI would bet the blue pantsuit is by Smythe. The jacket has the trademark cutout of their Duchess Jacket. Plus they have been all about pantsuits as of late. I bet this is a custom suit by them. Just my two cents worth!
ReplyDeleteJean, I think you're absolutely correct.
ReplyDeleteNice exhibition. The coat looks lovely I like the color, but this outer garment is a bit to long it makes her older.
ReplyDeleteI commented earlier on loving her coat. I happen to like the length for certain special wearings. I have one that is almost as long. I also have shorter ones. The length is great for warmth and for the odd length skirt dress. Agree with some others that the length of the coat works better with a slender heel or boots than the stacked heel. The blue pantsuit is not my favorite but looks like it was chosen specifically for the show.
ReplyDeleteMy first thought on the coat, and now I cannot unsee it - the photo of her standing next to William, hands clasped around the handbag handle, her feet slightly turned outward, and with the length of the coat, reminds me of Mary Poppins, about to take off with her umbrella.
ReplyDeleteOh my, i almost burst out laughing at my desk!! lolol. now i can see it too and its not going away:) thanks for the giggle
DeleteLOL, I thought that too....but she's a thoroughly 'Modern Mary Poppins"!!! I think the coat works with the longer skirt she is wearing and think she looks polished and poised!!
DeleteIn love with the blue pantsuit. Ditto to the many comments that this gorgeous red coat swamps Catherine and the length accentuates her long waist, not her best feature. Worthy work. It’s nice to see them out.
ReplyDeleteThe photos show a defined waist. The coat is beautifully tailored. I don't understand comments about it being ill fitted.
DeleteAlso, even if she had an unusually long waist, what is wrong with that.- and why should she hide it?
In the photo of the two ICU nurses the fit of their masks looks exactly like the fit of Kate's mask that was criticized by several people in a previous post. She has contact with a number if nurses in her work. That may be the guide she uses for her own mask fit. I am also reminded of a photo of another nurse just coming off duty with visible mask lines ( and very sad, tired eyes). It is difficult to keep a secure fit over the nose and cheek area without that firm fit.
DeleteAnon, I'm with you on this. I think the coat is fitted extremely well, I don't see her swamped in it. Not getting how it accentuates her long waist, other than she is very tall and it shows off her svelte figure! As to the mask, you are right about the snug fit, with all masks but even more so with the cloth ones that people tend to fidget with keeping it on the nose. Although the Amaia masks seem to have a metal piece for the nose which helps keep it in place.
DeleteI bet the trouser is her wide leg trouser from Jigsaw
ReplyDeleteLove the coat, shoes and bag. Longer length coats have never gone out of style on the East Coast of the USA. They are often worn on the streets of NYC and very useful on cold winter days especially with tall winter boots although often with heels and flats. Kates suit is on target as pants suits have made a big come back in professional dressing. Glad Kate is taking the plunge more often. Not a fan of the blouse, I think a simple white would have given it a lift.
ReplyDeleteAs a NYer, I can say you are spot on. I love my midi coat
DeleteDid you see the recent photo of Anna Wintour (editor of Vogue NY) on the streets of NYC, wearing a coat the same length as Kate's red coat? I don't believe Ms. Wintour is any larger than Kate, as far as swamping goes. I suppose the fashion maven is capable of fashion error but I very much doubt it.
DeleteBoots are great with midi length but pointless with this longer length,
unless the coat is worn unbuttoned and completely open, thus displaying the boots. Booties, maybe with the ankle length.
Love the color of this coat, just not the length. Not flattering at all. We wore midi costs in the later '60 and was not a fan then except when worn over a long dress to a dance or event. Long coats look like a robe to me. I do like a coat below the knee. I just don't like them down below mid calf or to the ankle.
ReplyDeleteThe display of the photos on the streets of London is a fantastic idea. Kate looks great today I like the length of the coat she is so tall and can pull it off. I like all the accessories too I’m convinced she has a new stylist! :)
ReplyDeleteI like the fact that the pictures are exhibited in various locations in keeping with the spirit of the competition. Kate looks great in the blue suit. I think the red coat is a stunning colour and cut, and would have been better styled with high-heeled black boots to make the outfit look more balanced.
ReplyDeleteI am having trouble replying to comments with the reply link under the comment but this is a reply to Caroline in Montana: I also love the purse. Wish I could find a less expensive version:)
ReplyDeleteAli, sometimes I have problems with that, too. Try waiting until the page is completely loaded. (The little circle thingy stops twirling)
DeleteLike many others I like the coat except I feel it should be a little shorter. The color is gorgeous as is her bag. Maybe it would have looked better with boots? I enjoyed looked at all the entries and having them all displayed publicly is a smart way to exhibit them. I also like that she is wearing more pants to her outings.
ReplyDeleteHope from USA
Her hair 😍😍😍 it’s long again!! I love it and she looks so beautiful!!!
ReplyDeleteI am on the fence about the coat. My first impression was like, but the more I look at it I'm not sure about the length. Why not? She can add this to her collection! What I do know is that I hate her Smythe Blazer and it is high time she replaces it with something else. It looks so unfinished to me with that missing piece in the back. From the front it is fine.
ReplyDeleteThank you! it seems we are the only ones who dont see the point of the missing chunk in the back of that blazer! i suppose they did only film her from the front so thats good. i just dont get the "look at my behind" message the back of this sends. hers is a good one but think of all the other folks wearing this blazer, cant be a good look on all. (like skinny jeans)
DeleteI've never understood that blazer. Last thing I want is my butt hanging out there. I would never buy it, but more importantly as a girlfriend, I would not allow a female I liked to buy it.
Deletelove the coat and the outfit hmm its suit her well i deffinelly love the project hold still its a tribute to our frontliners all over the world these global pandemic changes the daily life
ReplyDeleteI think that William presence for the hold still project and the red beautifull coat with that love letter bag are a secret celebration for their 10 th year since their secret engagement in Kenya. They signed a visitor book for the place where he proposed to her in that date.
ReplyDeleteA bit more time now so had a good look at the pictures. I see why everyone says the coat is too long ..in the one still photo it does look big on her. But I watched some videos and the movement of the coat is gorgeous. Very elegant drape to it that I think would be lost if it was shorter. I do think a pair of boots with a higher heel would have given it a bit of balance. But overall I still like this look. I hope we get a better picture of the blue suit. I know that a lot of people don’t like the wide trousers but here I think they are the perfect balance to her Smythe jacket which is a very fitted jacket (I know ...I have more then one of them in my closet!!) From what I can see the suit looks fresh, modern and very much on trend.
ReplyDeleteNot a fan of the coat - but adore her in a trouser suit. Modern and updated :-)
ReplyDeleteLove the coat. Beautiful colour and length. She can lend me the purse anytime! Lol
ReplyDeleteCan I just add that its great to be watching Kate out and about and to be commenting on her style, her work, and her endeavors!!! Feels good!! Thanks Charlotte.
ReplyDeleteI loved the coat. While I did think it was a bit long for those particular shoes, I can only imagine it with tall black boots. It has so many possibilities and she looks fabulous in red.
ReplyDeleteMB
IMHO, I think the coat is a little bit too long and overwhelms her figure. Kate has tended towards longer skirts/coats lately. I wish she would go back to her "just below the knee" length skirts again
ReplyDeleteThe coat seems a bit long, but my goodness...that girl can carry off anything and still look beautiful. She looks happy and I love seeing them together, out and working.
ReplyDeleteWhat an outstanding project this has been. Thank you Charlotte for the post. I have just watched Johanna's portrait of Melanie being painted onto the side of a building in Manchester. The photographs are all symbols of how we have all of us come together in our different ways big and small to face this challenge. A lasting embodiment of the resilence of the human spirit. For me this is Royalty at its best. I have always thought British royalty is the mirror and expression of the people just as the great and wonderful project is. I also reflected as I watched the painting emerging on the building face that Kate's projects reflect so much the loving compassionate warm motherliness in us all.
ReplyDeleteAlso as I read through the fashion comments I reflected that Catherine's fashion is also important. She looks lovely. A bright red coat to cut through the somewhat murkiness of our lives giving some hope for the future. Yes the coat is new but for us to regain a kind of normality the economy must be reinvigorated and the look today is supportive of that. So on lots of levels very well done.
What a very thoughtful comment Libby! The photograph being painted onto the building is amazing is many respects, and you are right this entire project is 'a lasting embodiment of the human spirit'! There is a depth of spirit in Kate that is wonderful to watch! Agree with all your comments, well said.
DeleteI love her coat. She looks beautiful. Fantastic project. She has been doing some amazing work.
ReplyDeleteKate looks lovely but I agree with those comments about her coat being to long. Good if it's a cold day though. No one commented on her hair. Looks lovely,
ReplyDeletebut it's really long. Half way down her back. You can see in the pic at the station when they're looking at the huge photograph!
the duchess looks so good in her project such loving ans touching project proud of them
ReplyDelete
