The Duchess of Cambridge has sent a message of support to Sir Ben Ainslie's America's Cup team as final preparations begin before preliminary races get underway. Kate said, "Sir Ben Ainslie and his team are about to embark on the challenge of a lifetime in an attempt to win sport's oldest international trophy, the America's Cup. All the teams taking part have spent years preparing and sailing fans around the world are awaiting the exciting showdown in March."
The Duchess recalled, "Six years ago William and I raced against each on the America's Cup race boats during our visit to New Zealand which was hugely exciting. But next year, in far more capable hands and thanks to the incredible engineering and technology behind their new race boat Britannia, the British team will race across the Hauraki Gulf in Auckland at speeds of up to 60mph."
Ineos Team UK said, "Royal support for Britain’s challenge to the win the Auld Mug first dates back to the original race in 1851, when Queen Victoria saw America in first place and asked who was second, the reply came: 'Your Majesty, there is no second.' That phrase, just four words, is still the best description of the America’s Cup and how it represents the singular pursuit of excellence."
The Duchess shared the message in her role as patron of the 1851 Trust, which she has held since 2014. At the time she said, "I am delighted to be Royal Patron of the 1851 Trust. I feel very fortunate to have enjoyed sailing from a young age and I know it is a great way of providing young people with the opportunity to develop skills and confidence. I am looking forward to being part of this journey and I hope that through the 1851 Trust we can engage and inspire a new generation into sailing along the way." In an unexpected festive surprise, Kensington Palace released a heartwarming video of the Duke and Duchess narrating a video with a new take on 'Twas The Night Before Christmas' to celebrate frontline workers. There's moving footage from the pandemic and a glimmer of light with a clip of the first person, Margaret Keenan, to receive the Pfizer vaccine in the UK.
This Christmas we want to say THANK YOU to our key workers and their families for all they have done and for the sacrifices they have made to keep us safe.

As a small part in that effort we have worked with @HamleysOfficial @TNLUK to share a bit of Christmas magic...🎁 pic.twitter.com/tzce2DY5Iv
It was also revealed at last Friday's Pantoland the couple partnered with Hamleys Toy Shop and the National Lottery UK to bring a spot of magic to the evening. Elves were enlisted to deliver presents to the children of frontline workers at the event.
Thank you for this post, Charlotte. I'm glad that you are waiting for the official release of the Christmas card out of respect for them. You are so professional in what you do, and it is a joy to read your blog. Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteNow that London is in lockdown again, with the theatres closing tomorrow, the Pantoland event becomes all the more poignant. And what a lovely, lovely gesture from Lotto and Hamly's--the children looked so surprised. As to the America's Cup, well, even as a senior citizen, Ben Ainslie sets my heart aflutter!!
ReplyDeleteValerie, you're comment is so cute! I'm pushing 70, and he makes my heart flutter too. We may be old, but we're not dead! Lol.
DeleteI’m 30 and he does the same to me ;) Some experiences are universally shared by all women, I think...and that includes Kate, as we’ve seen in her interactions with sir Ben Ainslie! :)
DeleteThe gifts: The Cambridges actually organised and coordinated the gift giving. I wondered what the elves were about running around the Red carpet and talking to the children of the honored pandemic workers. Turns out, they were asking them what they wanted for Christmas. The elf/Santa helpers then went shopping for the gifts. They were presented at a gathering after the panto performance.
ReplyDeleteI forgot how much eye candy sailing engagements with Sir Ben was and how fun it was watching Kate fan-girl completely. I always hoped that Kate would be able to attend the America’s Cup but I suppose that is completely off the table now.
ReplyDeleteThere's more than one-way fan-girling going on here. There's an undeniable chemistry between those two that was immediately apparent from the first photo.
DeleteThere’s so much lovely, cheery news in this post, but Sir Ben is always a treat. Great chemistry between the two of them.
DeleteTotally agree with the Ben love! He's got what it takes to make me want to sail :-) Also the chemistry is quite apparent with Ben and Kate--I've wondered about it since first seeing them together.
DeleteUnfortunately for the royal Family and others New Zealand is in lockdown and only those who are NZ citizens or permanent residents can travel here, unless they are recognised as essential workers. Even then they have to register and wait for a slot on a plane and go into strict quarantine for 14 days on arrival to ensure that there is no community spread of Covid19 here. It may seem draconian, but it has meant we have had only 25 deaths since the start of the pandemic and none at all in recent months. There was no lockdown at Christmas and people can travel within the country now so we are very fortunate.
DeleteLoved the video!
ReplyDeleteThank you for the great post, Charlotte! I loved the surprise video from the Cambridges - what a sweet and thoughtful gesture! 🥰
ReplyDeleteI also love the 6-year old photo of Kate and William holding hands!
I have read some criticism of this look, calling it "theme" dressing, but I like Kate wearing the same top (or similar) to the other sailing outing.
ReplyDeleteShe is either highlighting the range of clothing or being practical and repeating a fashion choice. With so many people hurting financially during this year, the repeat fashion choices are a sensitive decision in 2020.
And let’s be honest Kate likes herself a bit of theme dressing, sometimes she might overdo it and it might not be everyone’s cup of tea but it is Kate’s thing. Add to that her love of Breaton stripes I would not expect to see her in anything else for a sailing related engagement.
DeleteLoved the video! So much fun. Our duchess is so beautiful and well spoken. She and William are class acts.
ReplyDeleteThe appreciation for Sir Ben really takes me back to normal times. He's long been a popular chap on the blog :)
ReplyDeleteAs well he should be, love all his photos but the last one is especially worthy! Share your feelings of 'old times' and the happy smile that comes with it!
DeleteAgain, well done to both HRH on all their hard work. Christmas card is lovely this year. Obviously taking at their family home. The Duchess is glowing in some of the pictures. I think it is one of two things. She has found her feet and condidance in the royal family,or she realises how loved she is. They have both earned my respect for their hard work and sence of duty. Diana's influence is shining through in all their work, especially reaching out and mental health. Charlotte thanks so much for your work on the blog. Id like to wish you and yours a very happy Christmas and peaceful new year. Please God better times are ahead. 🙏 🙏 🙏
