It was a festive royal red carpet debut for Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis today as the adorable trio joined their parents for a special performance of the National Lottery’s Pantoland at the Palladium.
George and Charlotte made their Sandringham debut on Christmas Day last year and there was an expectation we might see them again this year had 2020 been a typical one. With term at Thomas's Battersea concluding earlier today, I expect it was thought this was an excellent opportunity to include the children on an engagement and to share new family photos. It's understood the family will spend the holidays at their country home, Anmer Hall, or at Bucklebury with the Middletons.
The unexpected appearance comes following a whirlwind 48 hour royal train tour for the Cambridges earlier this week.

My first thought when seeing the images...look at Louis! The baby of the Cambridge family and Kate's mini-me has grown so much.
'George and Charlotte held William’s hands as they walked cautiously up the red carpet outside the Palladium. As they got closer to the doors, Charlotte let go of William’s hand. He tried to grab it again, but the confident princess seemed to want to go it alone as she took in her surroundings. William then adorably stroked his daughter’s head.
Little Louis faithfully held onto mom Kate’s hand as they approached the dignitary welcoming them. While the royal parents paused for the greeting, Louis inquisitively looked up at the adults. Older brother George, who seemed cool and relaxed by the clicking of the cameras, quietly took in the scene as he stayed close by his father’s side.'
Princess Charlotte decided she didn't need her hand held for her first red carpet walk :)
'Even if your father is the future King, he can still be a little bit embarrassing sometimes.
And Princess Charlotte, making her red carpet debut at the pantomime this evening, made it clear she did not need to hold hands with the Duke of Cambridge, thank you very much.
But while Princess Charlotte took it all in her stride, it was a different matter for Prince Louis, making his first ever public outing.
The young prince, dressed in a blue jumper, anxiously clutched his mother’s hand as the family were met by dancing, juggling elves on the red carpet, and tried to hide behind her as one of Father Christmas’s helpers eagerly bent down to have a chat.
The laughing Duchess swiftly moved along, catching up with the Duke, who had been holding hands with Prince George and Princess Charlotte before the latter opted to go it alone.'
As the Cambridges took their seats for the panto, Louis sat on Kate's lap whilst George and Charlotte were on either side of William before the show began.
William also paid tribute to screen legend Dame Barbara Windsor, best known as EastEnders' Peggy Mitchell and for her work in Carry On. Barbara sadly passed away after a long and courageous battle with Alzheimer's. "I want to pause and pay tribute to a true national treasure, Dame Barbara Windsor, who so sadly passed away last night. She was a giant of the entertainment world, and of course a legend on pantomime stages across the country, including here at the London Palladium."
Below, the Duke and Duchess with Dame Barbara during a 2013 engagement for the poppy appeal.
'William and Kate spoke with Dom Warren, 35, and his wife Alex Warren, 33, from Hastings in East Sussex. The couple set up Dom’s Food Mission five years ago to use surplus food to help feed families in need. During the Covid-19 pandemic, they have seen demand rise dramatically and are currently providing 8,000 food parcels per month to families.'
William told Dom, "Look after yourself. You’ve got to look after yourself in the long term because then you can look after other people."
The Duke and Duchess congratulated the cast on an "amazing" performance.
And a group photo completed the evening.
Prince George matched his dad in red and navy tonight. Christin identified his sweater as the Ralph Lauren Cashmere-Wool sweater. Charlotte was cute as a button in a grey check dress by Italian brand Il Porticciolo (with thanks to Fiona). Louis was adorable in a navy jacket from his big brother's wardrobe.
Below, Prince George wearing the Amaia Kids Redwink Jacket for the Queen's Pre-Christmas luncheon in 2017.
The Duchess was elegant in a past season Alessandra Rich design.
The blue and white Petal Print Silk Dress features a flared style, a ruffle trimming, a round neck, long sleeves, button cuffs, a straight hem and a mid-length (with thanks to Emily).
Kate carried the £625 Smythson Ludlow Concertina Crossbody style (with thanks to Innominate via Twitter).
The children are beautiful! I am so happy for them to be able to get out. Probably much easier with out so many people. Hopefully things will get better soon all over the world.
ReplyDeleteWe are going into another lockdown in California.
All the best to you Charlotte and thank you for a week of lovely pictures!
Sarah, wishing you well. We are following CA on the news. We in PA have just had all our indoor dinning, gyms etc closed and indoor events limited to 10 and a suggestion to stay at home. Pray that come the summer, life will be "somewhat" back to a sense of normal and we to will be making plans to go to the theater like the Cambridges.
DeleteSeason's greetings to you Charlotte, what a lovely surprise. A delightful outing for the family. Prince Louis @ 2 and a half certainly has the height gene along with Prince George and Princess Charlotte. Thanks for the Posts all year. I really appreciate your hard work. Cheers.
ReplyDeleteKate looks stunning in this dress. The whole family looks so happy. The children are well dressed and well behaved. It is great that they continue to show support for the arts during these trying times. As you noted Charlotte, all restrictions and precautions were followed during this visit. I hope the readers on this blog realize that before they offer negative comments concerning Covid19. Thanks Charlotte for this report on the Cambridge family.
ReplyDeleteI love that the ruffles on Charlotte's dress are echoed in Kate's. It's all about the details. Happy Holidays!
ReplyDeleteFor me it would be perfect without them.
DeleteMany thanks for the post Charlotte! Panto is so much a part of English Christmas theatre. I am sure there will be many, like I, who will be confused about England's mask protocol. Mask on, mask off.... As a teacher who has now had to go online because our schools closed just two weeks ago, I kept my mask on as much as possible indoors and, in some of our schools, the rule was we were to keep them on even outside. Impossible for the kiddies but we adults tried to. So, as I said I am confused at photos of how W & K are handling the masks but I trust that they follow rules diligently. And, really, their support of the Arts, their support of everything this week, has been wonderful.
ReplyDeleteNo confusion at all with mask as mentioned by Charlotte!!
DeleteIt looked to me from photo credits one or two photographers, as opposed to a hundred plus in non covid times
DeleteI love all of this. But is this really happening during a pandemic?
ReplyDeleteYes it is, under strict Covid rules. They are helping to keep an entire industry from going bankrupt. Congratulations to them both.
DeleteYes, and it way safer than meeting a friend at home for a coffee because everybody is wearing a mask when required and people are distanced. In my country for example no infections have been registered at theaters or cinemas.
DeleteLouis looks so tall, I can’t believe how big he is!
ReplyDeleteHappy, beautiful, lovely family!
ReplyDeleteThank you Charlotte for this delightful post and for all the hard work during the year. I hope you and the family keep well and wish you all the best for Christmas and hoping that 2021 will be a better year for us all.
ReplyDeleteWhat an excellent way to start accustoming the children to the reality of their lives. One of the few positives of Covid no media pack to greet them. It looked like such a fun night. I am pleased that the theatres are starting to open up and hopefully as the vaccination rolls out and more are protected business will be able to open up more and perhaps some stability come back into our lives.
Prince William`s speech was spot on. It is so important to thank the people who have worked hard and contributed so much. I think particularly important for Royals to do this. There is a sincerity that comes with their neutral position. They are for all of us. Perhaps their mini tour can be seen as symbolic of starting the road to recovery from the health crisis and the start of mending the economy.
Best wishes to all fellow blog readers for the festive season and hope for 2021.
No media pack - who then took the pictures and videos?
DeleteAnon 9:49, it is not that there were no media, but instead of the huge regular pack you would find at an event like this, there was only the royal rota, a very small contingent, sharing their photos/videos with the rest of the media. You will notice that there are no photos from freelance photographers, who normally swell the media pack to more than double the size it is now.
DeleteLooked to me from photo credits only to be a couple of photographers as opposed to perhaps a plus minus a hundred in pre covid times.
DeleteShe is definitely wearing Christian Loboutin red bottoms. In the video you can see the red soles.
ReplyDeleteLook at the heels. They are creme and not red. Ergo no CLs
DeleteThe Cambridge Family looks so happy! I love Kate's dress! However; we are in the middle of a pandemic. Not sure that the Cambridge family should be in public without masks. I think it sends the wrong message. We all need to stay safe and wear masks!!
ReplyDeleteLovely event. The only thing missing was Charles and Camilla. It would be nice to see the three generations out and about together. I wonder if this is intended to replace the Christmas Sandringham walk.
ReplyDeleteI thought maybe the Windsor appearance was meant to make up for no church walk, Moxie. Did you see Camilla and pooch Beth at the unveiling? Hilarious. A sausage was attached to the pull for the drape, which Beth proceeded to yank away. Cheered me right up. The Royals are out there, trying their best.
DeleteA beautiful family! Charlotte at 5 and George at 7 are already half the size of their parents. I have the feeling they are going to be tall adults.
ReplyDeleteI agree, Tammy... being tall is surely in their genes! 😃 I think they're going to be tall and very handsome (the boys) + very pretty (Charlotte)! 🥰 I'm also sure they'll be kind people, having been taught kindness and respect for others from the very beginning.
DeleteThank you so much, Charlotte! This post made my day.
welll the panto is very british i love seeing the the cambs sibling the whole world should recovery the health crisis and start rebuild the encomy i hope these would be great rethink the what plan should we do next i love the speech of its very timely
ReplyDeleteI hope this will be a yearly tradition for the Cambridge Family. We as many families do go to the theatre for special events during the holidays. It would be great to see the children grow from year to year in this manner. Louis, for me, continues to look like Kate's father, Michael. Charlotte seems to have a true mind of her own that I do not think will fade away. We see the makings of a strong young lady. George, ever the proper young gentlemen. Lovely night out as a family.
ReplyDeleteThanks
ReplyDeleteThis kind of makes up for the fact there won't be a family walk to church on Christmas day. George looks to be getting tall.
ReplyDeleteThanks Charlotte , this post was a sweet treat . The children are tall! I’m glad they were able to have some fun. I’m happy that William served in the Air Ambulance and knows first hand the challenges of First Responders and medical personnel. I’m amazed the charities that help so many this year are still able to operate. I hope everyone reading this has some small treat to make their holiday season better. Online, or in person we take what joys we can make or give. Reading this blog is one of my joys. Seeing familiar names of people making comments is also nice.
ReplyDeleteHi Charlotte, thanks for your awesome work on this blog! Love reading it. What a beautiful family, lovely to see them all together. Just seen on Daily Mail that Charlotte's dress looks like its from Il Porticciolo, an Italian brand and she's wearing the Sveva dress £75. https://ilporticciolo.co.uk/collections/girl
ReplyDeleteThanks again for this lovely blog...a great place to escape too particularly in this difficult year. Have a wonderful Christmas! Fiona x
Great hair on Kate, and great dress. Just wish that when she wears interesting necklines, that she would also wear her hair up and/or out of the way to showcase the neckline.
ReplyDeleteFM, I agree. I would have liked to have seen Kate’s hair up to show the neckline...nothing too fancy, maybe even a pretty soft ponytail. I would have liked to see her wear a pop of color with her dress, maybe a pretty red or festive color shoe.
DeleteLOL, I was the opposite, I thought to myself I would like this dress less if her hair was up! I thought the ruffles would be too severe with her hair up I guess, maybe it would have looked overdone for this occasion. crazy how big the kids are getting, they are for sure going to be tall! loved seeing them all together, charlotte will be fun to watch, she seems like such a character! and agree that Louis has the Middleton look about him, they are all gorgeous. thanks Charlotte for all your coverage, also loved the mini train tour!! Happy Holiday's Everyone
DeleteP.S. Joanne, I would also have loved to see a festive shoe color:)
Caroline, that’s too funny that you would like the dress less if her hair were up! That’s a good point though. I’m such a visual person, I think I’d like to see various ways with her hair and see what looks best with the collar. Sometimes what I see in my mind looks awful when I ACTUALLY see it! Ha! What color shoe would you have liked to see? My first thought was red, but I’d really have to see it on her first. ☺️ Happy holidays🎄
DeleteJoanne, my first thought was red as well for the shoe, would quietly match william and georges sweaters. but if she actually wore it maybe it would not have come off so well. lol im no fashionista and I surprise myself with my thoughts on kate's style, most of which i love but could never carry off myself:) like to hear others thoughts, makes me think!
DeleteI don't think they are Louboutins. It looks like the red carpet reflecting on her soles. They are probably her Jimmy Choo or a similar pair she owns.
ReplyDeleteVery lovely family. The children are sweet and it seem used to the cameras. I love Lois jacket must be nice warm.
ReplyDeleteHow fun to see the family out together. Everyone looked great. Kates dress is very pretty and the children all look very nice. All three kids are changing so rapidly. Prince Louis really did well for being still so young, still under three.
ReplyDeleteLovely family! And Charlotte certainly is an interesting character! William looks his most relaxed and happy with his children.
ReplyDeleteSo true about William, Matilda! 😃
DeleteLooks like Charlotte is a 'Daddy's girl'
ReplyDeleteLouis has the facial shape of his grandfather, Michael Middleton.
ReplyDeleteAlso remarkably similar to his great great grandmother, the Queen Mother, at that age.
ReplyDeleteHello, I hope you're all having a lovely weekend.
ReplyDeleteJust a reminder this isn't the place for discussion on masks or personal viewpoints on larger issues relating to wearing them and how they should be worn. The event was held in adherence with all current measures in London at the moment.
Thank you, Charlotte, for this timely reminder. Of course they are carefully and precisely following all guidelines and would never risk their beloved children and future heirs.Photos will never tell the complete story. Warm regards to all!
ReplyDeleteLouis looked a bit intimidated, but what a little trooper! I just wonder if little Charlotte was cold in her dress. Hope she had something woolly underneath! The children appear to have enjoyed the panto. I think it helps to make things feel Christmassy.
ReplyDeleteThey are a good looking family
ReplyDelete
ReplyDeleteI was one of the lucky people who were in the audience Friday night. And it was my first Royal “sighting” so it was a very exciting evening😊 They all seemed to be enjoying the show!
Wishing all the readers of this wonderful blog a very happy Christmas!
Terri
Oh my goodness. Just saw their Instagram post this morning. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone...so I recommend you go watch it. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteThanks YellowRose, that was amazing and very heart warming!!!! Really love what Kate and William are doing, its very uplifting and inspiring. cc
DeleteDear Charlotte, I was wondering if you were to publish the Christmas picture release a couple of days ago of the Cambridge ?
ReplyDeleteEugénie
Hello,
DeleteI understand KP plan to officially release it. Unfortunately it was leaked online. If so, I'm thinking tomorrow or Thursday is very likely. It's a gorgeous family image and I do hope we get a high-res version. Last year, they opted not to share one because it was leaked, so I'll keep a close eye on it.
they sure have 3 cute kids
