The Cambridges Conclude Mini-Tour At Windsor With The Queen

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's whirlwind 48-hour mini-tour of the UK came to a close at Windsor Castle this evening. The couple joined the Queen and members of the Royal family for a photo-call on the steps of the Equerries' Entrance, before meeting an inspiring group of people who will be working over Christmas away from their loved ones.

The mini-tour saw the couple make stops in Scotland, Berwick-Upon-Tweed, Batley, Manchester, Cardiff, Bath and Reading. During a brief speech last night William said, "Catherine and I felt that it was extremely important to visit just some of the heroes that have emerged this year, to thank you for all that you have done. You are the people that have not only kept our country going but have also helped warm all our hearts by showing us the very best of human nature."

It is thought it will mark the last opportunity for the Royal family to see one another over the festive period, with confirmation the Queen and Prince Philip will spend the festivities at Windsor Castle. There have been some reports they may be joined by the Earl and Countess of Wessex and their children at some stage. Prince Charles also plans to visit, though he and the Duchess of Cornwall will celebrate at Highgrove. Earlier today, the Cambridges confirmed their plans are still very much undecided. "We are still trying to make plans. It's difficult to know what to do for the best." It's thought they will choose either Bucklebury or Anmer Hall. Under current rules, three households are permitted to mix over the Christmas period of 23-27 December.

Her Majesty looked resplendent in a 'Christmas red' ensemble by Angela Kelly. There were multiple reports suggesting Prince Philip would join the photo-call, however I suspect it may have been a case of deciding on the day.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex with Her Majesty. Edward and Sophie came from a visit to Woking where they joined volunteers to prepare meals at Moorcroft Community Centre. Foodwise, the charity they worked with, are working round the clock to delivery nutritious and hearty meals and have produced 30,000 meals over recent months.

The royals enjoyed a special performance by the Salvation Army band who performed Christmas carols outside the castle.

The Mail reports:

'Commissioners Anthony and Gillian Cotterill, Territorial Leaders for The Salvation Army in the UK and Republic of Ireland, also came forward to speak to the Queen who told them 'nobody's allowed to sing anymore'. Choirs are allowed to perform outside and Anne told her mother 'Oh, we can sing outside'.

Mr Cotterill said afterwards: 'The Queen was saying she was just so happy we were able to play some carols because she thinks this will be the only time she'll be able to hear carols, and she was disappointed we didn't sing.

'Sometimes we're playing musicians and other times we're a choir, at an event like this it's better to have the band as you can hear it for miles.'

The Salvation Army's Regent Hall Band, based in London's busy Oxford Street, played Hark The Herald Angels Sing and The First Noel for the royal family. Mrs Cotterill added: 'I did see the Queen mouthing some of the words – so that was nice.'

Afterwards, the other royals said goodbye to the Queen before making their way to a brief reception.

A tent was erected for the event.

The group of twenty guests included teachers, postal workers, a bus driver and refuse collectors from the Windsor area.

Rebecca English reports Kate asked a local teacher if she had filled out the 5 Big Questions survey:

'Kate and William spoke to Sarah Cottle, 49, headteacher of three maintained nurseries in Windsor and Maidenhead.

She said afterwards: 'We talked about Covid play, the children are starting to put masks on their dolls, making sense of the world around them

'Social distancing and that's tricky. The duchess shared that was really difficult and emphasised that you just can't with young children.

'She asked if I'd completed her survey which put me on the spot a little and the duke said "don't put her on the spot" and she laughed and said she'd had to chide her parents to get them to fill it in.

Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall -- in a lovely purple Fiona Clare coat -- also spoke to teachers about how their pupils have coped throughout the pandemic. The couple have been busily carrying out a variety of engagements of late. Yesterday, they attended a service in celebration of the 800th anniversary of Salisbury Cathedral. They've also recently carried out visits supporting the arts sector.

The Duke and Duchess chatting with attendees.

We've seen a selection of repeats from the Duchess over the past couple of days. Kate has a fabulous collection of coats and it's been wonderful seeing several of them again. That trend continued tonight with the return of the long, double breasted, bespoke Catherine Walker design she debuted in Ireland in March.

Kate wearing the forest green coat in March with a green Alessandra Rich dress.

Christine from Kate's Royal Closet identified Kate's faux fur lapel as a £65 Troy London piece.

Kate carried her black suede Alexander McQueen clutch.

The Duchess accessorised with the Queen's diamond pendant earrings. Kate has worn them on multiple occasions in recent years.

And the Duchess wore her Amaia Kids face mask in Kate and Millie print.

And that brings the mini-tour to a close. What was your favourite event and look from the trip? :)

Thank you so much for a wonderful coverage, Charlotte! I can't select 1 best look or event from the mini-trip - I've loved all of it! When going through the posts, I realised how much I missed this kind of engagements. I really appreciate that the Cambridges visited different parts of the country and showed the people that they are with them, they share similar worries and they are genuinely interested in what people are going through. It seems to me very much in line with Kate's recent efforts (photo exhibition, 5 big questions etc.) and I find it very encouraging.
And when I saw her fabulous coats again, I realised that after many weeks/months of "coat-fasting" and seeing Kate mostly indoors, this was exactly what I needed! 😍
HM looks wonderful in her red and everyone looks happy - it must have been great to see each other in person!

    3. Ditto Zora, well said!! Loved all of it, Kate's sartorial diplomacy, her repeats of her beautiful coats, and the little mix-ups of accessories to freshen the look! The tartan scarf, the faux fur piece.... hard to pick a favorite. And well the Queen, she looks amazing! Photo 'fav's' of the tour were the one with Kate and William waiting at the station, and the last stop photo of the Queen and her family. Love the lighting and the architecture of the Equerries Equine, beautiful!

  2. It's hard to pick a favorite. I loved it all and it brought me Christmas joy, and a feeling of hope that all will be better in this world. The photo op with the queen was very special to me, just seeing HRH looking so well, and being with her family. It was great, Charlotte.

  3. William and Catherine have been tremendous on their mini-tour.
Lovely end to it this evening, great seeing all the Royals together.
The Queen looks radiant, what a lovely festive outfit.
Catherine’s as always looks beautiful. Have to say this outing of the coat looks way better minus that pretty hideous patterned dress. Love the fur lapel too.

  6. I echo the other sentiments - all of it was wonderful and well done. The causes and individuals they chose to highlight were perfect. There were little anecdotes about them that just made them seem like someone you’d like to hang out with. (The Prosecco pong and pasta maker gifts! I mean, this sounds like a girl I could seriously have some fun with. Drinking wine, making and eating pasta, having a laugh? What’s not to like?) I absolutely adored the family get together at the end too. HM looks wonderful - long may she reign!

  8. that was a great idea to do a tour at the end of the difficult year and i think there is a sign of law that william and kate take responsibility for a whole nation. before i say something to kate coats i have to get rid of the queen wow when i saw the first pictures i thought she is a christmas vision she looks fabulous. i thought it was great that kate dressed herself eonfachly with what she had at her disposal that paid attention to the people and not to their clothes. i liked all outfits except the red mcqueen coat the color is so beautiful but it's too long. otherwise she looked beautiful as always

I tell you what Charlotte, it's a total TOSS-UP on favorite outfit! I can't decide if I like the red-plaid ensemble or the kelly-green! LOVE the hair and boots with both! I also love that little fur collar she wore in her green coat. It reminds me of a coat she wore on Christmas day one year-maroon with a maroon fur collar.

The queen looks MARVELOUS as usual. I always love how she is styled and wish someone could style me as festive.

Loved all of this and hope we are treated to a few more outings before Christmas!

  10. Oh My Goodness!! What an Absolutely Wonderful Christmas Holiday Treat!! Especially because this year we are expecting so very little! So incredibly lovely to see them all together at Windsor & with music & such lovely festive colors!

I find myself just delighted by even the smallest thing this year & this gathering/event was no exception. One can feel the family enjoying being together, yet sad that this will be the peak! I loved how they handled the reception. How lovely for all who attended!

Thank you Charlotte for your coverage of this absolutely delightful Train Tour! Will & Kate were both a Holiday Delight in both their presence, spirits & clothing ensembles! Festive all around! I just love how Kate just exudes beauty in all things, even in her clothing ensembles.

This really raised my spirits today! Thank you! Just prior to seeing this post... my Christmas Fortnum & Masons Christmas Delivery arrived at my house here in the States! It wouldn't be Christmas without my beloved British favorites arriving!

It really touched me to hear that the Queen was asking about the lack of singing. It reminds me so much of my own Mother (about the same age) who is struggling at times to keep up with & understand all the rules. Also, I don't know if I imagined it, but I thought as I looked at HM, that she seemed a bit more tiny in her upper body? With our (hubby & I) Mothers aging, we are noticing such things. It's just so hard to see her age in the least, as she has always seemed so timeless & I absolutely dread the day when she will no longer be with us all!

Meanwhile, I wish HM & her lovely family such a wonderful & cozy Christmas Holiday Season! I wish the same to everyone in our group here, from all around the world!

So much love & wishes of Happy Holidays to you all,

  15. This gives a feeling of reminiscence as “the come back couple”. It sorts of recalls the couple’s local tour as new couple, the years before they had children, and pre controversy of “the fab four”. This is also most likely the best PR success since Heads Together campaign of the former three.

    ReplyDelete

    1. I’m not sure it was a PR success. Most newspaper coverage seems ambivalent to mystified. I really have mixed feelings about this whole outing. I think a late Spring tour once the vaccine has been more widely distributed and more of a celebration of the end of the pandemic and a difficult winter would have been more appropriate. This public health situation is still extremely fragile, and it’s really hard for me to square this as anything but reckless for the sake of vague morale. The resources needed to run the train, provide security, and manage groups (though certainly not crowds given this moment in time) at their stops I think are just not appropriate to be going to non critical royal visits at the moment. I don’t know I’m really torn here :(

      Delete
    2. 14:33 My thoughts precisely. Huge resources and significant risks involved could backfire. Let's hope it doesn't. Even though it can retain meaning and significance (I'm doing it up for one this year with a Cornish hen instead of a turkey), Christmas without the festivities and traditions that bring so much joy will be a shadow of itself this year for most of us who celebrate.

Let's hope that no one falls ill on account of this well-intentioned attempt to show gratitude and bring joy to others. My anxiety on that account makes the colours of winter coats and the photo ops less thrilling.

    3. I agree Anon 14.33. It was far from a success, very far from it. Just one needs to read their own goverment's statement and health experts and the Scottish Nicola Sturgeon. It was stated as the tour kicked off, it was William and Kate's idea, which is nice they wanted to give something back, but it was ill advised and reckless, they should leave PR for the experts, they did not score many good points in the eye of the public, whichever comment section I read, it was full of negative reactions.

      Delete
    4. I am with you here - really torn. The image that stood out to me was the one of children - unmasked - lining the street and waving flags. Any other time that would be great, but it is too soon to have any sort of crowd, even outdoors. Imagine the regrets and the headlines if those children (or anyone from the tour) come down with Covid.
On the other hand, I did like following the tour.

      Delete
    5. If the public is torn it’s their right. But I find outrageous that the same politicians that had to agree to the tour because their governments would have to provide security, logistics, etc then criticize it publicly. So they either said to KP we are happy you’re coming and then changed their minds when they saw some people were complaining or they’re insinuating that despite their opposition KP decided to go along with the tour? I don’t know which one of the two options makes them look more stupid.

      Delete
    6. The children weren't random crowd onlookers. They were part of the engagement, a controlled group. Also, what approximate age were they? They looked quite young to me. I believe age ten is the age minimum for masks in UK. Add the fact that they were outdoors.
Unfortunately, I think there is an attempt to politicize this effort. Most of the negative publicity comes from known republican sources commenting on a royal tour. They aren't known for praising royal initiatives.
      PR wise, it was brilliant.
I have no doubt that William and Catherine could have found other uses for this pre holiday time with the children out of school. Try sleeping on a train, memorising speeches and details, and being camera ready for hours on end. This was no romantic get away for the Cambridges.
The timing? the uplift was needed now. The frontliners and other supporters have become fatigued and badly needed encouragement. One does not hold the pep rally after the game is won.

    7. I'm just letting y'all know that Kensington Palace's spokesperson made it clear that all of the UK, Scottish, and Welsh governments approved of this tour before it even started.

They fill the space in such a way that the viewer doesn’t focus on the space between the groupings (and the missing figures DoE, Andrew, Anne’s husband, H&M). 1. No. Just the proper snug fit. Sophie's mask and fit are quite similar. Compare that fit to Anne's mask. It is loose and has slipped down so that her nose is not full covered. Mask-wearing is difficult for some for various reasons.

    1. Interesting article! Obviously there are many opinions on this from both sides, including those in Scotland. Seems a little like a political situation with the PM of Scotland taking a hardline approach to the tiered lockdown that has been met with opposition to people in Edinburgh. If you read other articles you can learn that not everybody was against this trip or felt it was unnecessary. Quite honestly, if there was controversy and opposition, William and Kate seemed to handle it very well. There are always questions about monarchy's role, and no less during a pandemic. Think that William and Kate are making the most to continue their efforts to show appreciation and shine the light on those who are in the frontline. The trip was short, quick, and something a little more personal, than a Zoom 'thank you'. Frankly, we all can use some positive distractions and encouragement.

    2. Frankly everything is political these days. All over the world. It's very tiring and just makes life all the worse in this dreadful year! I for one was very happy to see W&C getting out on this tour.

      Delete
    3. Interestingly, one of the points of the article is that the RF should have done more. Perhaps they could have done this kind of trip in the summer when it was allowed, and been more visible then. Although at that time everyone thought it was over and things were getting back to normal, no one thought about the second wave. On the other hand the hold still project was very much in tune, and the article doesn't mention it.

  26. It's sad really that there is any negative around this tour of goodwill. I'm reminded of the when the late Princess of Wales was put on the spot above her work on landmines being political. She said "I'm only trying to help" Just like her son and daughter in law are doing. I read a comment saying PR wise bad move. I disagree, they are travelling around to thank people on behalf of their Queen. Fantastic to see the family around her majesty.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Reading some of the remarks above, one would think that Prince William and his wife had a party. When they go to see people, it's because the Queen can't be there in person. The Scottish prime minister obviously is trying to further her cause. I live in the Republic of Ireland and like most here was delighted to welcome them to our country. Like the Queen before them. It's a pity this tour didn't include Ireland. Much needed kindness and thanks during these very difficult times.

  28. I thought this was an interesting tour to follow. If you are going to have a monarchy, this is what they should be doing during a pandemic. The use of the train was clever and put people to work. It gave folks something to look forward to. The photo call was a nice ending. Curious to see how Christmas is handled. Its possible William and Charles could go to the country and still do a Christmas walk.

    1. Your point about the train helping to put people to work is an excellent one. To me it shows hope, as this isolation and non work atmosphere gives a sense of uselessness, it is clever way to lift the esprit du corp. Much like the people who are cheering on the tired runner of a marathon, I guess that's how this mini tour made me feel, like a spark, a light of hope of a 'win' and a return to our life. A feel good moment!

  31. If anything is to be believed, apparently the beautiful picture of the royal family on the steps is the new structure of the senior royals. What a fitting end to William and Catherine's mini tour and that all converge in one spot to present a united front and a new beginning. What a lovely Queen you have England.

  32. There is a beautiful video circulating that shows the royals leaving the steps of Windsor and saying goodbye to the Queen. In the video you see Kate curtsy to the Queen, then a few seconds later she blows her a soft goodbye kiss, and the Queen smiles! Lovely moment!

  33. First of all, as a royal watcher, I very much enjoyed the tour. The engagements were lovely, they made a big effort to connect to people and bring holiday cheer, the fashion was fabulous and Kate appeared 100% like a future Queen.
Is it the role of royals to appear like this in a pandemic? Obviously, the royals are expected to be with the people in a time of crisis. It is one of their main tasks and extremely important - just like King George and Queen Elizabeth did during the war.
The thing is that we are now in a pandemic and in a pandemic you are supposed to stay away from other people as much as possible. That is a new reality for all of us and it also brings difficulties for the royals and their roles. William and Kate have shown their willingness to do what it takes, even at a risk to themselves. That is good in a way, it shows their dedication to duty and country, but is it truly the best thing to do in a pandemic?
They took a lot of safety measures - masks, distance, a lot of engagements were outside. But these were gatherings of people nonetheless - which is not great during a pandemic.
Showing support from afar is not something any of us are that used to, even after almost a year of this, I find. It is still very different to appear in person, to meet people face to face, to be able to truly connect. But in this situation, it would perhaps be for the best to keep doing it via zoom & phone conversations.

    1. Exactly. It’s not that I’m bashing them I just have mixed feelings. This isn’t analogous to visits after a war or natural disaster. The very logistics involved in orchestrating even a small scale tour raise risk (even if not extreme and certain precautions taken) during a public health crisis. And I do think it’s fair for some scrutiny to be applied to that decision making. I honestly don’t think the BRF has been very creative or forward thinking during this crisis. Which to be fair aren’t exactly traits they are known for. We saw quite a bit of video calls but also a seeming desire to continue old school in person royal style events that I’m sorry are just risky right now. As well as very inconsistent messaging re: masks. I really think there was a missed opportunity to consistently stick to a message and be visible (by video) and set an example and camaraderie with the nation while acknowledging the difficult situation everyone has found themselves in. I think a spring train tour would have been a lovely celebration of a return to normalcy. I don’t agree with the analogy stated above that it’s a pep rally after the game. People celebrate when games are won too, not in the middle when you’re not sure how it will turn out. The end of this pandemic is in sight, and I am so relieved, but we are absolutely not there yet, and the situation is still quite dire. I continue to have mixed feelings about the wisdom of this tour and the timing and the gathering of groups it involved.
