William, Kate & George Cheer on England at Wembley

It was a special day for Prince George! After school, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge brought their eldest child to Wembley Stadium for the much anticipated England v Germany Euro 2020 match. George looked cute as a button in a suit and tie for the match.

The appearance comes ahead of George's eighth birthday next month. Certainly, over the past year or two the Cambridge children have been more visible and today's outing is very much a continuation of that with George's future in mind. There have been various articles of late speculating on how much the future king has been told about the coming years. I suspect it's a case of very gradually introducing public appearances for now.

Indeed, Roya Nikkhah reports it's the first time Kate has joined William at an England game. It was likely decided it was an ideal engagement to take George to together.

Many will recall the Duchess photographed George in his England shirt for his 6th birthday portraits.

People reports:

'The early evening kickoff of 5 p.m. London time made it a perfect after-school outing for Prince George. After the trio said hello to British soccer star David Beckham, who attended William and Kate's royal wedding in 2011 with wife Victoria, George was spotted singing the national anthem with his parents before the game started.'

The winner of this match will proceed to the quarter finals of the the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship. England manager Gareth Southgate outlined his strategy and thoughts ahead of the game: "The teams Germany have already played have had big problems with he overload of their wingbacks. We’ve got to deal with that but we’ve also got to cause them problems with our system. Our focus has been as much with the ball as it has been without it this week, but we did know that tactical problem in our defending third of the field is one we had to resolve."

Prince William travelled back to London following a day and a half in Scotland where he joined Her Majesty the Queen for engagements marking Holyrood Week. Earlier today, the Prince travelled to BAE Systems Shipyard in Govan to view work on the Royal Navy's HMS Glasgow - the first City Class Type 26 combat ship. When completed it will play an important role in maritime security and overseas engagements. Whilst there, he announced news Kate has been appointed by the Queen as sponsor of the ship. William said, " I know that Catherine will be delighted to join you here in Glasgow for the naming ceremony in due course." The Duchess will travel to Scotland later this year to "christen" the ship. The Palace said it will mark the beginning of a "longstanding strong and enduring personal connection to the vessel and her crew, often supporting milestones, events and deployments".

Aside from the Euros (at this juncture, I must admit this blogger is utterly clueless on the topic of football), a sporting tournament I have been closely following, along with Kate, is Wimbledon. The championships kicked off yesterday in style with a spirited first round match between Andy Murray and Nikoloz Basilashvili capturing the public imagination until late in the evening. Andy made his successful return following years of challenges and hip resurfacing surgery. It's one the Duchess would have loved to attend and I'm sure she watched from home. We do expect to see her there on at least a couple of occasions in her role as patron during the tournament. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she tries to catch Andy this week.

And back to the match... It was smiles all round as England won with a score of 2-0.

Kate was in England red for the evening, choosing a blazer by ZARA (with many thanks to Christine from Kate's Royal Closet).

The textured double-breasted blazer features a lapel collar and pronounced shoulders.

Kate accessorised with her Simone Rocha pearls (with thanks to Gaby).

And Halcyon Days bangle.

  2. Love George enjoying with his Dad. I've been watching with my Dad too and it's been great bonding. At the end of work, just unwinding with an adrenaline rush.

  3. Nice looking family. George looks very dapper with suit and tie. MO just a little overdressed, well that is just me. A very handsome lad. Does anyone know who won?

Love this! love how PG's face just seems to crack open when he smiles his big smile, he is adorable. his expressions are priceless! love the DoC in the red blazer. I think this is a fantastic way to start to bring PG out, plus he must feel special being the oldest and getting to do things with just his parents!

excited to see the DoC has taken on a ship, love those events!

Off topic but did anyone else see the photo of Eugenie (one of my favorites!) and baby august? thought august looks a bit more like jack from what i could tell, he is a total cutie!!

Caroline, the photo is beautiful, it looks like they're 100% enjoying being a family! :) I also think the little one looks like his Dad but sometimes it changes really fast and it's possible he will look more like his Mum later on!
I agree about Prince George's smile. He is a lovely kid!

  6. Loved when George cracked that big smile. Agree, that at his age I think a dispense of sport coat and tie would be allowed. The mini me look is a little much at his age in my opinion. If boarding school is in his future today may have been the first step in uniform dressing. Not to forget Kate, she looks great.

    1. USA Granny, Right now it doesn't seem that boarding school is in George's future. I agree George was rather formally dressed for a sporting event, but his father is President of the FA. Many other men in the royal box were also in suits, shirts and ties. Will and Kate are always appropriately dressed and given George's future, they are grooming him for his days ahead. Besides, George is in Year 3 at Thomas's Battersea school, they wear a tie at that school ages 7--13. So this is not unusual attire for George.

  7. What a great outing for the three of them. George looks wonderful and I bet so thrilled to be at such an exciting event
with his parents. Almost everyone in the Royal Box is dressed up for the occasion and my boys would have wanted to wear their suits also. Love that bright red blazer on Catherine.

  9. Although most of the other men seated near the members of the Cambridge Family are wearing suit coats and ties, Princes William and George look overdressed to me. What do men in Britain usually wear to soccer matches ?

    2. It probably depends on whether they are attending in an official capacity or just going to the game. It does seem to have been a great game and everyone enjoyed themselves.

    4. No everyone in the box bar a couple are wearing suit and ties. William is President so George is dressed appropriately.

    5. At PG age he maybe wanted to look like daddy ... and that’s why they dressed him in a suit.

They are in the box where everyone else is wearing jackets and more formal clothing . PG is wearing what is correct for that part of the venue. If they were in upper seats and not front and center for photos, the dress code might be relaxed. He looks pleased and appropriate for a child who is being exposed to a crowd and the media. I think his parents give a lot of thought when they take the children out to be seen by the public.

  15. They look like a Royal Family. In one of the photos something about George's eyes reminded me of George V & Edward VII. In another one I saw a bit of James Middleton..... That said..... James sometimes reminds me of George V & his cousin The Tsar.

The mixture is unique, isn't it, Becca? 😃 Great to see you here again! James Middleton does look like tsar Nicolas... perhaps that was the idea when he decided to grow a beard :)

    2. Becca I am so glad you said that because I have thought the very same thing, about George and James Middleton! And then there is the faint resemblance to the Spencers, especially when you see young photos of Diana and her brother.

  16. Love this! Really love Kate's blazer - the texture and color are so wonderful - and earrings. This reminds me of Prince William at Wimbledon with Dian - I think he was older, maybe 9? When does everyone remember Prince William first stepping out in an official capacity?

  17. Anon 21:20. most folks at football games are casually dressed, but this is a finals match, and they are in the Royal Box! How fun to dress up a bit, but check out any other weekly match and those not sitting in special seats and most will be dressed more casually. But I have to say, there are plenty of people who maybe only go to some of these type of events with our kids a few times over 80 years and it might be special enough to get dressed up no matter where your seats are...:)

  18. What a beautiful family. I've no doubt that George will grow up to be as well behaved and well mannered as his parents, it'sa breath of fresh air and a pleasure to see them all together!

  19. I think the Duchess always looks beautiful in red. A lovely family evening out for them. Prince W has been very busy,in Scotland with the Queen, back for the game and statue tomorrow. I really hope that it captures the magic and beauty of the late Princess. It really is the least that she deserves for all her work for Queen and country and her amazing charity work. Hopefully their Mothers love will bring them closer to heal and move on. Very high profile outing for Prince G. He is dressed perfectly for a young Prince and future King. Look at how the Beckhams are dressed. In the Royal box and while two further King's are present, best suit and tie would be the correct thing to wear. S. ☺

  20. One of the few times that Kate looked a bit subdued, not quite as bubbly as usual. Lovely to see George and William interact.

  21. Kate looking gorgeous in the red jacket. I’m comparing pictures of the Danish royals to the UK royals at the respective football games they attended and the UK royals definitely more formally dressed the Danes were without ties and some had a chino or jeans on with a jacket. I seem to feel the Danes dress was more appropriate for a match maybe I would have thought being in a full suit with tie would be appropriate if you were there to present a trophy at the final?? I’m splitting hairs I know but just my thoughts. Nice to see men smartly dressed 😊
