The Duchess Is Joined by Dad Michael for Wimbledon Men's Finals & Surprise Euros Appearance

It was a day of incredible tennis for the Duchess of Cambridge.

Apart from Wimbledon, a certain football match is very much at the forefront of the nation's minds. Upon arrival, Kate was asked about England v Italy and said she's keeping her fingers crossed.

The Duchess was joined by her father Michael Middleton for the day. Yesterday we chatted about the Middleton family's love of the sport. Over the past week we've seen Michael, Carole, Pippa and her husband James courtside. Kate is incredibly close to her family and from Mike's lovely words when William and Kate confirmed their engagement to glimpses of him with his grandchildren over the years, he's always struck me as a lovely man and a fantastic husband, father and grandfather. It was great to see the duo together today.

Kate and Mike's first port of call was Court No. 3 where Britain's Gordon Reid was beaten by Belgium's Joachim Gerard in the men's wheelchair singles final.

On Twitter, Kensington Palace congratulated both players on their "fantastic performances" throughout the tournament.

The BBC reports:

'Reid, who won the doubles title with Alfie Hewett on Saturday, lost 6-2 7-6 (7-2). The Scot, 29, had trailed 4-1 in the second set before mounting a fightback to force a tie-break but Gerard was more consistent.

"It's a tough speech to make. Sometimes you have to say I lost to the better player," an emotional Reid said. Reid had been chasing his second Wimbledon singles title after victory in 2016.'

From there, Kate and Mike made their way to the Royal Box for the much anticipated final between Novak Djokovic and Matteo Berrettini.

The coin toss was performed by 13-year-old Sean Seresinhe who represented youth mental health charity Off the Record Counselling.

The first set saw Italian Berrettini make a number of excellent shots before taking the lead in the tie-break.

It was filled with tense moments...

The Duchess closely watched every point.

It wasn't long before Djokovic began to dominate taking sets two and three.

And with a fourth set victory claimed his sixth Wimbledon singles title.

Wimbledon reports:

'Centre Court has never tasted so good. Novak Djokovic, the self-styled "wolf" of Wimbledon with a hunger for the All England Club's pineapple-topped trophy and striped lawns, snacked on the grass in celebration after coming from a set down against Matteo Berrettini to win The Championships for a sixth time.

Eating the court has become Djokovic's signature move - he had also done so on every previous occasion he had won this title - but this time it was different, this time the rye grass would have been all the sweeter.

This was the afternoon, loaded with tennis history, when the World No.1 put himself level with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on 20 Grand Slam singles titles, and also three quarters of the way to becoming the first man since Australia's Rod Laver in 1969 to accomplish the near-mythical calendar-year Grand Slam.

By adding the Wimbledon title to this season's triumphs at the Australian Open and Roland-Garros, the Serbian was also advancing the argument that he should ultimately be considered the GOAT, the Greatest of All Time, in the men's game.'

The world number one said: "Winning Wimbledon was always the biggest dream for me when I was a kid. A seven-year-old boy in Serbia constructing a Wimbledon trophy with improvised materials and standing here with a sixth real trophy is incredible. It is amazing."

It was a bittersweet day for the Duke of Kent who stepped down as All England Club president after more than fifty years. The Duke has presented the trophy on over 350 occasions to players including Rod Laver, Ann Jones, Roger Federer and Serena Williams. Speaking about his years of service The Duke said: "It has been an honour to serve this remarkable institution for as long as I have. To have seen this tournament, and the game of tennis, grow and inspire generations over the span of five decades has been an extraordinary experience, and I am incredibly proud to have been part of it. I look forward now to watching as the young players of today pursue ever higher standards of excellence, and I shall continue to cheer them on as they do."

As a thank you, the Duke was presented with a replica of the Gentlemen’s Singles Championship Trophy on Centre Court. Several members of the Kent family attended today's match.

It has very much been a family affair for the Kents.

More from the Telegraph:

'His wife, the Duchess of Kent, 88, was also a regular fixture, often presenting the women’s trophy until she retired from public duties in 2001. As he described, the presidency has been very much a family affair.

The Duke took over from his mother, Princess Marina, who held the role for 26 years until 1968, making the presentations at the end of each tournament. She was diagnosed with a brain tumour shortly after her last appearance and died a few weeks later, aged 61.

She had succeeded the Duke’s father, Prince George, who was at the helm from 1929 until his death in a plane crash in 1942 when he was 39.'
Ian Hewitt, Chairman of the AELTC and The Championships, said:
"We would like to thank the Duke for his extraordinary service to The Club and The Championships during his time as our President.

A lot has changed at Wimbledon in the time that The Duke has been our President, from our champions to our Grounds, and yet so much has stayed the same. Our traditions are at the core of what we do, and we thank The Duke most warmly for his dedication."

Very fittingly, the BBC reports the Duchess of Cambridge will succeed the Duke of Kent as president.

A lovely photo of Kate shared by Wimbledon.

The Duchess was pretty in pink wearing Beulah London's Ahana dress.

The £695 piece is described as: "It is crafted from blush-hued wool and shaped to a fit and flare silhouette with a short stand neckline, cropped sleeves and sweeping skirt that's belted at the waist for a figure-defining fit". It's also been worn by Crown Princess Mary of Denmark in beige.

The Duchess wore her Aldo Nicholes block heel shoes.

Kate accessorised with her Mappin & Webb Empress earrings and Ray Ban Chris sunglasses.

Kate carried her vintage beaded Josef clutch.

And wore her Amaia Kids face mask in pink pepper.

It was a wonderful tournament. Congratulations to all winners and to the Duchess on her new role as president.

Now a surprise appearance! Over the weekend we've been chatting about the Euros and the possibility we might see Kate there. The Duchess and Prince George have joined Prince William for the match.

Prince George's reaction to an early goal :)

I read earlier tennis champion Marion Bartoli revealed whilst chatting with William and Kate yesterday that William wanted George to wear a jersey for the match. She added: "William was for it, Kate not so keen, so we'll see."

It was an unforgettable game with an additional thirty minutes and penalties. Finally Italy won 3-2. Afterwards William tweeted: "You’ve all come so far, but sadly this time it wasn’t our day. You can all hold your heads high, and be so proud of yourselves — I know there’s more to come".

The Duchess was in England's red and white.

Kate wore her white ZARA blazer, a piece she's worn for several years.

We saw Kate's Lauren Ralph Lauren Nadalia top.

The Duchess wore her black croc belt by Anderson's. It's available at Net-A-Porter.

The Duchess accessorised with her Astley Clarke lapis necklace. It is described as: "A celebration of vibrancy, this demi-fine Stilla gemstone pendant features a captivating table-cut lapis lazuli gem, set in 18 carat yellow gold plated sterling silver, and uses a spectacle setting to display the entire blue gemstone and show its complexities beautifully. This gemstone pendant is finished with a gold nugget detail and our signature Astley Clarke star-set lapis lazuli tag."

And Kate's new red beaded earrings are by UK brand Blaiz (with thanks to Lady Parky). They retail for £65.

An outstanding effort by all involved. Congratulations to our friends in Italy on their victory :)

  1. Love her look. I would have used a different clutch but the dress and shoes are gorgeous and look great on her and those earrings are always beautiful.

  2. I found this dress to be perfect -- her figure is perfect for the dress, and the dress is perfect for her figure. My only suggestion was be to change to a fun straw bag. I saw that Priyanka Chopra was in the box yesterday, and was reading that one has to be invited to sit in the Royal Box? Is that true? If so, it seemed like a very nice gesture. I was wondering why yesterday the box was full and today it seems to be mostly empty.

  4. Nice! Like this look so much. The dress and shoes are perfect. I'm also glad Kate brought her dad. She and Michael Middleton really look a lot alike.

  7. Did you all see the cheering and applause for Kate yesterday as she was announced before handing the trophy? Wimbledon really loves her!

  9. Game Set and Match. The Duchess looks beautiful at the tennis. Maybe some bigger daytime diamonds would of been nice. It is really fantastic to see people coming together to enjoy sport. Lovely to have a day out with her Father. My hopes for her attending the football are fading. I don't think this match will finish early. S. ☺

  10. Yesterday I wanted her dress to be like a mauve color with open toe wedge sandals, and today came pretty close! I really like her dress, it’s so summery and I like the ankle shoes! Gosh, her hair has gotten really long! I wonder how long it is if she was wearing it completely straight. It’d be fun to see. Thumbs up on today’s outfit. πŸ‘πŸ»

  11. As I am watching this fabulous Mens Final fashion is the least thing on my mind. What is making me smile is that Kate has brought the best possible date today. The man who loved her first and forever.

  12. Lovely dress. The dress flatters her frame very much. The shoes are perfect with it. I like them much more then the white pumps yesterday which were so 1980s and looked so aunty-style. The clutch bag is not the best choice as I would have preferred a plain nude bag matching her shoes. By the way the Crown princess Mary of Denmark has worn this Beulah dress previously in a creme/ off-white colour in 2019 or 2020.

  17. Great look for Kate. This young women has three children, almost unbelievable, she is always a stunner. She also went to the football game, nice blazer. Little George looks happy, the little heartbreaker in a suit again.

  18. The fact that Kate took her dad to the Wimbledon final is such a sign how things do sometimes change (and for the better). If I think back on the grief and abuse Kate and especially her family suffered when W&K were dating and even when they just got married, for being commoners and social climbers, just imagine what people would have said if Kate took her father to the Wimbledon final 10 years ago.

But Kate has paid her dues, her family has paid their dues and proved themselves to be an asset. And now she can invite her father to the Wimbledon final without being scared of being accused that her family is using their connections to her.

    1. The Middleton family is wonderful. They are discreet and so very supportive of all their children. Kate could not be more regal if she had been born a princess. Mike and Carole Middleton raised Kate to be kind, warm and most considerate of others. She never seeks attention. Everyone should be grateful to the Middleton's for bringing such a fine addition to the Royal Family.

    2. True, it took her 10 years. Even now, not sure everyone approves of her taking her father to Wimbledon, and it would be worse if she had taken her mother. I remember the criticism when she went on holidays with George with them. The press and part of the public definitely mistrust the RF inlaws.

  19. Vey flattering dress and love the shoes. The clutch is beautiful but I agree, something fresh in straw would have been nice. Watching the football and hoping England holds on another half hour plus. Kate’s snappy white and blue is perfect. Karen in Virginia

  21. I remember 10 years ago that it was considered unusual that William's wife would continue her strong and constant family connections. I guess it was not done in the past, but imagine how history would be different if Diana had had strong, functional parents who acted like Kate's parents. I'm sure William derives so much strength from the family. Remember Kate's declaration when engaged when asked how lucky she felt to be marrying William, and she replied that he was lucky to have her? I liked that answer.

  22. So sad for England! Next time.

I love seeing the three of them interact. William and George are so into it! The cheering and hugs after the first goal(?)! But, then looks on William and George’s faces after the game. I feel like the thought bubble over Kate’s head is something like “You two ride together and sulk, I’ll go in a separate car.”

Loved both outfits. The pink dress was perfect! The cut, the style, the accessories! I was glad they honored the Duke of Kent for his years of service and support. And Kate’s football outfit was great. The colors of England, but the white made her visible enough and she looked comfortable enough to enjoy the game.

    1. I agree; I loved all of Kate’s outfits & she looked very comfortable at the football. That thought bubble sums up Kate’s reaction, I think. William & George would’ve been a drag on the drive home!

  24. At first I wasn't sure about this dress but seeing "live" during the awards, you could see that it really suited Kate. The shoes and clutch are the same ones she used for Wimbledon 2019 (with the light blue). Perhaps that's why she didn't go with her 'straw' clutch? I think Kate 'pairs' her purses with shoes fairly regularly.

Sweet that she brought her Dad and that they attended the wheelchair finals first. I was hoping the match would go 5 sets but alas, great match. I have no doubt we'll see more of Berrettini and Novak as well. Hopefully we'll PG next year attend a match with Kate.

  25. On her element today! Lovely at Wimbledon with her Dad and so respectful of the Duke of Kent’s presentation. She must be thrilled to take on the role from him. So happy for Prince George to see another game with his parents and loved the hearty laugh photograph!

  26. How lovely to see the Duchess's father with her at Wimbledon. He has always struck me as a quietly dignified and elegant man. The Middleton's are a close enduring family.

  27. Kate is indeed blessed to have a supportive family. Not everyone does. As to press coverage, indeed after Kate’s marriage, the tone changed and after Harry’s marriage, even more so. But that’s what sell and keeps all these royal experts well employed and compensated. It’s a business.

I rooted for England. Tears in my eyes. Congrats to Italy. It had the better team. Our lads did us proud and I’m thrilled we made it to the final and to play against the best. That’s a hard earned achievement.

  29. A day of sports. Love the blazer for the sport. The massive red earrings are unexpected but I like it. I always thought Kate should try bigger more bold pieces from time to time. The pink Beulah dress is not really nice though. Material and skirt are fine but the top just doesn’t cut it. The little standing colour doesn’t go well with the shoulders, the two pleats, the width and length of the sleeves. I also find the colour not the best. It washed her out a bit. But the clutch is beautiful. It would have popped more against a darker colour.

  35. I suggest in future football cups the senior royals make efforts to attend the Scottish, the Welsh and NI games as well. Their absence is noted in these nationalistic time.

It’s unfortunate that English and Anglophile media created such hype and jingoistic expectation. This doesn’t excuse the poor behavior of some of our fans nor the terrible racism on displayed after the game. But the media hype wrapped the team in ultra nationalistic coverage and deliberately and disdainfully created ugly fault lines. I never seen so many united Europeans, Scots, Irish and Aussies cheering for Italy. Food for thought here.

    1. Hello!

It looks like multiple options are being considered. At this point it's all very much up in the air. The idea of a country home in Berkshire is an interesting one. It's certainly a more convenient commute than Norfolk.

  37. I think the royals are spread fairly thin at the moment. Four members of the family no longer working for the Queen. The Queen is 95 and Charles 72,most people are retired at that age. The Duke and Duchess attended a lot over the weekend considering they are hands on with three children and working for the Queen. I'm Irish and I was cheering on the πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§. Our closest neighbour's. Great team and better to come from them. Now that George has been allowed attend big events. Here's hoping they go to Silverstone next Sunday. S. ☺

  38. Yes I agree that the Royal Family must be careful not to appear as only the English royal family when the Queen is Monarch of 15 Countries as well as Scotland, Ireland and Wales. My father was born in Cornwall and always insisted that he was not English. After all it is the United Kingdom.
