The Cambridges Join Tom Cruise for 'Take Off' at Top Gun: Maverick Premiere

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined Tom Cruise for take off at the London premiere of Top Gun: Maverick this evening.

I've been keeping an eye on the reaction to the film and followed the Cannes premiere, and one can safely say it's the most significant movie event since the pandemic, with the exception of the superhero genre. Critics have praised it as the best summer blockbuster in years and it is expect to boost cinema ticket sales globally in the coming weeks, seeing a more mature demographic returning to the big screens for the much anticipated sequel. It's been quite some time since Tom Cruise first graced screens as Maverick in 1986.

Top Gun has been very much a staple for decades and I have no doubt there's a copy in many of your homes. It turns out William and Kate are fans too -- not surprising at all given William's time as a pilot. It was reported at the beginning of April that Tom Cruise heard the Cambridges were big fans and invited them along with princesses Beatrice and Eugenie for the private evening.

Indeed, William teamed his McQueen tuxedo with a pair of Crockett & Jones embroidered with Top Gun F18 planes, per Roya Nikkhah. The ideal photo caption for this will be familiar with fans of the original film: "You can be my wingman anytime."

A closer look.

An arrival video.

Another view.

The movie star has a long history of meeting members of the Royal family. In fact, it's almost exactly 30 years since he met the late Princess Diana at the premiere of Far and Away at the same location tonight's event was held. Cruise and then wife Nicole Kidman would attend Diana's funeral five years later.

Speaking about the Royal family and his attendance last Sunday at 'A Gallop Through History' (now, we know this is the one...we didn't see the little ones in a carriage :)) which Mr Cruise attended along with Her Majesty making an appearance. Cruise said he greatly "admires" the monarch owing to her "dedication to her country". On William and Kate attending the premiere: "Tonight is also about charity, giving back and they're here celebrating the arts. Also, you know, we have a lot in common. We love England. The Duke and I were both aviators so we love flying."

It is very much a night also about charity: it's the first Royal Film performance since 2019.

The organization supports hundreds of thousands of people working behind the scenes in the UK’s film and television industry. This was especially apparent during the pandemic when the charity went above and beyond to help many of those who lost their livelihoods.

More from the Film & TV charity:

'The Royal Film Performance™ has been a mainstay of our fundraising since 1946, and today raises funds to help those working behind the scenes in film, TV, and cinema with a range of mental health, practical, and financial support.

Thanks to the generosity of individuals and organisations from across the industry, the charity was able to help more than 10,000 people during the pandemic – but our work is not done yet! As well as bringing new support services online (including, in the last 12 months our Bullying Advice Service), we are also working collaboratively to meaningfully change behaviours and to destigmatise the conversation around mental health to benefit everyone working behind the scenes.'

Kensington Palace added: "The premiere was hosted by Paramount Pictures and The Film and TV Charity and will be the 72nd Royal Film Performance™ delivered by the charity in its almost 100-year history."

Kate with stars Jennifer Connolly and Miles Teller. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer is pictured in the background with Tom Cruise.

Mr Cruise leads the Duchess up the steps.

The film's plot? (Spoiler free). "After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose”. Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it."

The trailer.

Another impressive element tonight? A Typhoon fighter jet was assembled in Leicester Square for the premiere.

A full video of the arrivals. There's complete footage of William and Kate meeting with the cast during the last 25 minutes of the stream.

The group make their way inside.

Inside, the Duchess was presented with a beautiful posy.

Kate joked the children couldn't come as it's "a school night".

The Cambridges met representatives from the Film and TV charity. They also spent time meeting with additional cast and crew, including director Joe Kosinski.

Kate looked fabulous in a classic gown by Roland Mouret.

The sold out Lamble off-the-shoulder, two-tone gown features a fitted silhouette, a fluted hem and banded sleeves. Kate's piece has been customized to remove the visible zipper and lace insert at the back.

A look at the back.

Kate's dazzling new earrings are a Robinson Pelham design.

The jeweller created Kate's wedding earrings and subsequently designed jewellery for Pippa Matthews' wedding. Gabi swiftly identified them as the Tsar Star Studs and Drops. They retail for £10,000. I wouldn't be at all surprised if they're a gift. Perhaps a 40th present from Kate's parents?

Kate wore her Prada cutout pumps.

And carried her black Alexander McQueen clutch.

What do you think of tonight's look?

  1. I love the dress- it’s stunning! I was not been a fan of the center part on the duchess that she started it a few months ago but this reemphasizes it in my opinion. She has such beautiful up-dos I would have loved to see one with this dress.

    1. I agree. I just do not like the straight blown out look at all. Whether it is on Kate or any other woman. Curls, up do's, half up do's, are so much more flattering. But I love everything else about her look and I love Kate!! Thanks for such a fun post Charlotte! Makes me want to go see the movie now.

    1. Agree! It is not just her looks that make her outshine even the movie stars, but her and William's countenances. They are so unpretentious, humble and kind. Wheras, some of the stars look like they are trying so hard to be sexy, beautiful, or cool. The Cambridges just are cool because they are so down-to-earth and confident. They seem to care about inward beauty much more than outward beauty. Fun night!

    2. Thank you S. My mistake. I think Diana wore a gown with stars and had some crescent jewelry and I got them mixed up. I looked up the Robinson Pelham earrings and if they are a custom combination of two sets, it looks like the price comes to 13,177.82 USD.

  8. Love the dress, but I really dislike this new hairstyle of hers. I don’t mind the straightened hair but the complete lack of volume prematurely ages her.

  9. She is always so conservatively dressed that it is wonderful to see her in something a little sexy, a little daring, and very classy. I very much love her up-does, but with this dress, straight down and sleek is the way to go. I love this look!

  12. Stunning head to toe. I actually like this hair style. The dress is beautiful on her. The Duke looks quite handsome also. Thank you for the quick update Charlotte and also the info on the earrings. They really suit her. I couldn't find them on his site. Looks like two pair of the tsar earrings put together. 10,000 plus. A very nice addition to her growing collection. Very stylish and really suit this dress. Great to support and wear jewellery made in the UK. S. ☺

  15. Not surprised by a Roland Mouret choice. If she had done a 're-wear' my guess would have been the Royal Blue Roland Mouret. Am curious about the earrings because I don't think I've seen them before. She has sooooo many stunning earrings - and while these look great with the dress - just don't think something new is needed. I was hoping she'd go for emeralds. The demi-parure with the long, diamond emerald earrings and bracelet would have made her look like a princess. Also surprised she didn't go with a glittery purse.

I'm hoping Charlotte you got a picture of her from the back - looks like there is a sheer section. Given Kate's hair is long and sleek tonight (which I think works well with the style of the gown) not sure we'll see much.

I watched the 'live' coverage and I will say Kate had a very long chat with each of the cast members. That surprised me - Wills kept trying to move her along. ;-) Cruise engaged throughout each of Kate's chats as the host. PS: I'm looking forward to this movie and just re-watched the 1986 original (it's so 80's - somewhat sexist IMHO - which from my perspective having lived through them, was the 80's).

    1. I also looked for bracelets. I love the earrings and in regard to something new. Probably a 40th birthday gift. While I'm delighted to see her wear those emeralds,. I really love to see her wearing Cambridge emeralds. There are some that The Queen doesn't wear. I'd liked to have seen her wear those buckle bracelets worn by Princess Margaret. Would of been the wow factor with this dress. I think she was going for a very sleek and modern look. She nailed it, she looks amazing. S. ☺

    2. Yes! Speaking of other bracelets...there's the Queen Mother's Cartier Quintet (I chose these for a "dress Kate" previous blog) or Queen Mary's diamond Indian Bangles as well. I hope that when Kate becomes Princess of Wales, we'll start to see more coming out of the vault. In the meantime, I wish HM would encourage and invite Kate to more frequently wear jewelry from the vault.

Agree that she nailed this sleek, modern, contemporary look - which also fits her perfectly.

    3. The Queen also has a few pairs of bracelets. Most of Queen Mary's chocker necklaces can be worn as bracelets. S. ☺

  16. Well this dress is disappointing. Can't compare to the stunning gold one she wore for the last opening. This is so just ordinary, no pazazz! And no diamond bracelet or any notable jewellery! Her hair is also boring & plain so guess it goes with the dress.

Love, love her sleek, modern hair. This look is fitting for her age. She seems to be dressing more modern and young, as fitting for her age, and less old these days. The hair really gives her a young, modern vibe perfect for this occasion. Thanks for the article, Charlotte! Great pictures!

    2. I think she got the tired look because of the makeup. She has different shade or tone of makeup lately

    3. I think the make up and the sleek hair aren't doing her favours? I'm sure she's not tired as she is known to be very fit and healthy. A pop of colour on her cheek and lips would brighten her face. Kate has a long oval face and I think the sleek hair she is favouring atm drags her face down, she looks so different tonight compared to at the garden party where the up do helps uplift her facial features. But it is also nice to see her experimenting with her look though : )

    4. I think she just looks tired in single, straight-faced photos. If you look at a video or of her smiling, she doesn't look tired at all. She looks energetic and excited to be there.

    2. I’m not sure if it was that, or having her right hand free to shake the actors’ hands as she was walking up to meet them? This silhouette is lovely on her and they both look great. The bottom of the dress at times looks hard to walk in. The earrings are fun and the whole look is sleek. I’d be curious to see this as a rewear with more significant jewels and a different hair do- hopefully sometime in the future! Love William’s whole look from head to toe (awesome shoes)! Nice to see the glamour for a good cause! Thanks Charlotte. Sue

    5. I believe that Catherine perceived and understood the proffered hand as a natural gesture of a gallant gentleman (who is not British or constipated by royal protocols and taboos). She took it. No story. No faux pas. Simply good manners which can differ subtly between cultures. Back in the day when a Chinese ruler attending a State Banquet drank from his fingerbowl the American President of the day did the same to put his guest at ease.

    1. Different venue calls for different style, there's something a little razzmatazz about Bobnd that suited the gold. This Mouret is simply more grown-up as part of the cool tux theme that's being played on.

    2. I agree! While the Bond premiere look was radiant and gorgeous, I thought it was all teetering on too much. This is just sleek and svelte and classic. Those earrings are perfect!

  30. Wow! The dress really flatters her body shape, her curves. Nice to see her wearing something a bit tight for once. I do however now see what many have been saying about her hair, I would have loved a bit more volume.

  33. I almost saw Tom Cruise exit after the event this evening. The police were holding back the crowd and traffic outside Leicester Square on Charing Cross Road. I wish I could have seen Tom as well as William and Kate!

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree. I think the dress and hair are too severe for her thin frame and and face. I think she requires a fuller hair style and dress to flatter her better.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Hmm.

I am having very mixed feelings about this look. On the one hand, I am a huge Roland Mouret fan and treasure the one Mouret dress I own. The Duchess's dress for this premiere exactly suits my own sensibilities -- it's sleek, simple, and sophisticated -- and I love the black-and-white palette. I also think that the Duchess's hair, which has been driving me crazy of late, owing to the length and frequent use of a center part, works with the dress very well. It, too, is sleek, simple, and sophisticated.

Some people have suggested that she needed more jewelry. I don't think so. The restraint in color and line called for equal restraint in terms of bling. The earrings were just enough.

BUT: somehow, this dress isn't entirely flattering on the Duchess. Here, I risk straying into weight issues, and I'll try hard to avoid them, since I am a skinny woman myself. The problem is that when you are very slim and well-exercised but have reached a certain age, you risk starting to look, er, scrawny and sinewy in the arms and neck in certain skin-baring clothing. The Duchess has reached that age, and somehow, she's not quite able to carry off this dress without that being noticeable.

I'll leave it there. Others can debate the subject if they wish. Suffice it to say that I do love the dress and wish I could be more enthusiastic and less reserved about it.

My only other comment is that I am not a Tom Cruise admirer, and I doubt the Duchess needed his help to get up the steps. I couldn't figure out, by the way, why he needed to be involved in any way in the Platinum Jubilee Royal Windsor Horse Show Gala the other night. What was the point?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree- on both accounts. The dress is gorgeous but the neckline is showing off her body in not the most flattering way.
The whole look reminds me of Reese Witherspoon in Armani at the Oscars 2011 or Julia Roberts in 2001. The sleek hair fits the dress perfectly but not necessarily Kate.
I think it’s good she didn’t try to recreate the showstopper moment from the Bond Premiere. I like the earrings, but I think more bling, while not necessary for this look, would have given another distraction for the eye and it would have softened the harsh look the neckline creates (as discussed above).
Williams shoes are a funny idea, but I don’t think it works.
RE Tom Cruise. I like him as an actor but his involvement with Scientology makes me question him a lot.
And regarding the movie- I really like Top Gun. But I am pretty disappointed that Hollywood is not coming up with new ideas but constantly doing sequels and prequels. They count on the draw of those great blockbusters and in 99% those additional films are just not as good. It’s lazy and easy money. Top Gun is very much a product of its time. You cannot make a film like this today for several reasons. So this one will not be able to carry the same vibe. Which is fine, it could still be a good movie but why not make it its own thing? The main character doesn’t have to be Maverick and a 2022 Maverick will be a different character than the one from Top Gun - because let’s face it, 1980 Maverick would get a restraining order instead of the girl and everyone would think him
an idiot. He is a cult figure but only works in this old movie that shows its old and from a different time. I think the movie will draw in money, critics might like it but the crowd will very probably be disappointed.
      C.

    2. I agree the look might be less flattering in the future, like it happens with Letizia, but I don't think she is at that point yet. Her neck and arms look amazing. On the other hand the neckline of the Barbados gown was even better, I'd say it is not the amount of skin but the proportion that is important.

      Delete
    3. I agree with your comment about age/weight. No disrespect toward the duchess, who is a lovely woman in every way!

      Delete
    4. Catherine is not old, she is 40. My goodness her toned arms and neck are to die for. The dress is a perfect balance between sexy and sophisticated. As for too skinny she has beautiful curves and it is incredibly frustrating that someone would comment on another person’s weight. This is what is wrong with society today. Too much pressure on what people perceive is perfect. Catherine is clearly happy and healthy so that is all that matters. I am not an admirer of Tom Cruise either but he was being a gentleman offering his arm so you can’t fault him there.

      Delete
    5. Natacha, if you mean the green Packham dress the Duchess wore in Jamaica, that dress had a tulle ruffle at the neck/shoulder line that greatly softened the effect. The Mouret's lines and black/white colorway are so starkly simple that I think the dress is just not as flattering as the Packham, much as I admire it from a purely objective design standpoint.

      Delete
    6. Vittoria, actually I meant the light blue gown in Barbados, deep V neckline vs strapless. Arms even more visible but softer effect.
Now you mention it, the Jamaica green was also strapless and you are quite right, the ruffle softened the look. It isn't so much the neckline than the severe lines then?

      Delete
    7. Oh, I see, Natacha, you meant the beautiful Philipa Lepley dress worn in the Bahamas? An examination of the photos taken of it suggests that the evening lighting in them was rather less stark and harsh than that in the photos of this premiere. That seems to have made a difference to the Duchess's appearance, though yes, the severe lines (and the black and white palette) of the Mouret do matter.

As for the Anon who is so upset with me, please note that I didn't say the Duchess was "old," nor did I criticize her weight or even begin to suggest that she was unhealthy. I merely pointed out that as we grow older, certain styles and designs may not be as flattering on us as they were when we were younger. Our necks and arms, no matter how slim, well-exercised, and toned, may not look as good, because they will not be as youthfully smooth and rounded as they once were.

Someone suggested somewhere that she would have liked to see the black velvet strapless McQueen dress that the Duchess wore early in her marriage at this premiere. A comparison between the way the Duchess looked in it back then and the way she would have looked now could have been very interesting.

    8. I understand what you are saying about how we age. I’m a decade older than the duchess, but I’ve certainly noticed hair texture and skin changing. Even though I’m fit & active, I shy away from shorter skirt lengths and décolletage (too much sunbathing). My mother was always overweight, but the plumpness really made her skin look nice and she had less wrinkles! :)

I’m amazed at how Catherine can rewear gowns from her late 20s, early 30s- I don’t think I’d want the comparisons! She is scrutinized enough. Sue

    9. Vittoria, the lightening is indeed much softer, I hadn't thought of that, but she was lovely in that gown, that kind of neckline suits her so well. Sue, I agree on the comparisons which her former self in the same dress, it shows a lot of confidence, she is the most photographed woman on the planet. I must say she still manages to look stunning. Being like you and Vittoria thin, bordering on skinny, same weigh since I was a teenager and Leizia's age, no matter how fit you are, age is becoming a factor.

      Delete
    10. And yes, Vittoria, it was the Bahamas, not Barbados...another aging symptom?

  55. Like the dress. Not her best colors though. They age her unnecessarily.

  56. Hello Charlotte , I have been reading your blog over the years, but never commented . Thank you for an excellent coverage and it's a pleasure to read it. This look is indeed stunning. It's sleek and the Tailoring is impeccable. I think you missed a point. Although the earrings could have been a 40th bday present to the Duchess from her parents, but I think she was being sartorial. If u see the logo of the Top Gun, you can see a small star. William and Catherine both have a sartorial nods in their own way.

  57. Awesome classic and sophisticated french look ! She wears this so well. And no need for more diamonds. Remember what Coco Chanel said about Jewelry ...

  58. She looks very glamorous. Although I don’t particularly like the white band at the top of the dress, I wonder if Kate chose it as a bit of a nod to the Diana’s black and white style at the Tom Cruise premiere pictured in this post. It wouldn’t be the first time that Kate reached back to a Diana fashion moment.

    1. No It wasn’t. She can choose clothes because she likes them not because she’s channeling or copying other people. This continuos debate is tiresome. She’s her own person. She doesn’t need to be looking for things similar to what her mother in law, whom she never met, wore 30 years ago.

    2. Of course she can and does, but there’s no question that she’s evoked Diana’s style on occasion. Look at what she wore emerging from the hospital following Louis’ birth and compare it to Diana’s post-Harry birth. There is no way that was a coincidence.

    3. Anonymous 17:41 - I feel you! That's quite a stretch to say that a black & white style has to remind us of Diana. Numerous women have worn it before and after her and she didn't invent it. It's not always about her. It's about Kate here.

    4. In any case, if we're talking about the "Far and Away" premiere, Diana's dress appears to have been blue and white, not black and white. It was a Catherine Walker sheath-style halter dress, with a blue skirt and a white top.

    5. If you look at all of the stars of the movie as they are lined up, they are all in black and white ensembles. Thinking this was more a contemporary nod to the movie rather than a sentimental one to Diana. At any rate, both look lovely in their gowns and both are signs of their respective times.

Really admire and love her a little more day by day! 💕💕💕

  60. I can't decide! My opinion may be colored a bit by the fact that I do not like Tom Cruise ... at all. I think Kate looks amazing in the dress from the white border down -- she looks very curvy and it's a great look for her. I am in love with the earrings. I don't like when the neckline "binds" the arms -- I don't like that on Meghan or Kate. Only other thought is that the black of the dress competes with the darkness of the hair. In general, though, I think it's a great change, a little Morticia Adams-ish in a very good way! William's shoes are a surprise!! :)

  61. I'd like to bring up something: it's disgusting the lack of outrage at Tom Cruise for holding Kate's hand vs. the outrage at Lebron for putting his arm around Kate. Both cases, "royal protocol" is broken, but no one is calling for Tom Cruise's head. The British tabloids are so racist.

    1. The daily mail was outraged, they ran an article about how the royals should not be touched, how the americans do not understand and so on.

    2. The Daily Mail is outraged over everything. I never take it seriously. Moreover, the royals have been touched by plenty of British people. The Duchess was touched by one at the garden party just the other day.

Strictly speaking, of course, you shouldn't be putting your hands on anyone without permission. This isn't a matter of "royal protocol" but rather a general rule of etiquette and appropriate behavior, no matter who is involved.

    3. There are multiple articles on the subject, like "How the Duchess of Cambridge and Tom Cruise broke royal protocol", an Hello! heading.
It seems opinion is torn between breach of protocol, how arrogant is Tom, and what a gentleman, how nice...

    4. Who creates the "outrage"? Ordinary people? Not hardly. I'm sure Kate wasn't overly offended by either.

My husband would have offered his hand to any lady in a long dress to help her up steps at a formal event. I believe Mr. Cruise has had enough red carpet experience to know how fitted fashions and long dresses can slow a lady’s movement. I know according to protocol it looked odd to some, but to me , it looked liked a kind gesture.

      Delete
    6. It wasn’t because of protocol. It is because Kate never needs her husband’s hand to walk anywhere or go up the steps. Even when pregnant she was able to walk on her own. So of course she was not going to reject TC hand but she didn’t need it.

  62. Kate is beautiful as always. Agree with others her long straight hair is aging. Wish William would button his jacket. Charles needs to have a word😊

  63. Just wow! She looks so stunning…Every event she attends, every speech she gives or activity I think: wow! Look here to all the haters or anyon who doubted her! She does such a good job!

  64. Kate is a beautiful woman and this dress simply doesn’t work for this event. I don’t like the straight long boring hair.

  65. She looks marvelous! I always thought Roland Mouret dressed her nicely- I really liked the slinky royal blue gown and can't forget the ivory, long sleeved gown too. Sexy while still appropriate. Forty and fabulous for sure! Love the earrings too! And I love the Dad fashion too- Yay for William!!!

  66. This is most definitely a Catherine WOW moment, for sure. She has gained a sophistication in her style in this past year that is simply awesome to behold. Her poise, confidence, elegance, it's all coming together for her in the beginning of this new decade of her life. She is a woman of strength and power and it shows in a beautiful way. I wouldn't change a thing about this look - the gown is fabulous, her hair, the statement earrings, the entire ensemble is spot on and in my opinion spells perfection. Catherine is a force to be reckoned with. She is a stunning example of having mastered one/s role with humor, maturity, beauty, and kindness.

  69. Kate looks stunning! I am not a fan of this striaght/banded dress and sleek hairstyle, but accessories, make-up, neck and those toned arms are just soooo beautiful. The highlight is William's slippers! So well thought. Wish I was there, too!

Love the dress but I would have had a big diamond collar necklace because I love sparkles and an up do. The straight hair is ok but I think a movie premiere calls for something more fancy. Also I would have done some sparkly shoes like those Crystal Jimmy chips

  71. Kate looks stunning, her hairstyle at this event I am not a fan of. She looks better with her hair as usual. Her plus one William looks great, even the shoes? Mr Cruise is starting to show his age finally.
