The Prince and Princess of Wales Visit Northern Ireland

The Prince and Princess of Wales, styled as Baron and Lady Carrickfergus in Northern Ireland, visited several cross-community organizations providing services and support to people of all backgrounds.

It was a significant day, marking the dual milestones of William and Kate's first visit to Northern Ireland as Prince and Princess of Wales and it is also, I believe, their first visit to the Carrickfergus area since their titles were conferred upon them on the day of their wedding in 2011.

Carrickfergus is County Antrim’s oldest town, the name meaning 'Rock of Fergus'. It is located on the north shore of Belfast Lough and is home to Carrickfergus Castle, which dates from circa 1180 and is one of the best preserved castles in Ireland.

A reader sent me a link to a very well-known folk song about Carrickfergus. Today is National Poetry Day and in reading the lyrics to the song, I thought I would share a few lines. As Jean Paul Richter so succinctly put it: "Music is the poetry of the air."

"I wish I was in Carrickfergus

Only for nights in Ballygrand

I would swim over the deepest ocean

The deepest ocean for my love to find"

Following Her late Majesty's passing, King Charles spoke about his mother's role in helping to heal divisions in the aftermath of 'the Troubles' in Northern Ireland: "My mother felt deeply, I know, the significance of the role she herself played in bringing together those whom history had separated, and in extending a hand to make possible the healing of long-held hurts."

Baron and Lady Carrickfergus began the day with a visit to mental health charity PIPS.

The charity was founded in 2003 following the devastating loss of fourteen young people to suicide in Belfast the previous year. Amidst the heartbreak and tragedy, leading figures from across the city came together to focus on offering support when people need it most. A range of tailored services offered include suicide prevention, counselling and bereavement support.

Now in 2022 their ethos remains focused on a shared core belief: "The organisation began, and very much remains, a community led organization with a strong grass roots led ethos to suicide prevention and self-harm."

The pandemic presented many additional challenges to charities across the board, none more so than mental health support organizations. PIPS has seen an increase of over 500% from young people reaching out over the past two years.

William and Kate had the opportunity to see the charity's 'Little Boxes of Hope' care packages that are given to children supported by the charity.

Products in the box include a 'Wash away your worries' soap bar and 'Seeds of Hope'.

Afterwards, the couple greeted well-wishers outside. Kate navigated a very tough moment when a woman said to her: "Nice to meet you but it would be better if it was when you were in your own country. Ireland belongs to the Irish." Kate smiled and quickly looked to the other side of the crowd.

I noticed Kate caught up with popular Belfast blogger Laura-Ann and her darling son Barney. Laura-Ann is a huge fan of the Princess and I've noticed her in the background of photos during several royal visit to Northern Ireland, including the King and Queen Consort's visit last month. Speaking about today's chat on her Instagram page, she said she was "buzzing" and "speechless".

From there, William and Kate visited Trademarket, an outdoor street retail market in the heart of Belfast. Kainos Technology shared a photo after speaking with the couple and revealed: "It was an honour to meet Their Royal Highnesses as part of their visit today. They were keen to hear about our work with young people in the local community and we loved sharing our story with them."

People reports:

'Local entrepreneur Will Neill set up the market to create a vibrant, welcoming and diverse site which would allow new businesses from different backgrounds to work alongside each other. After competing in the cocktail contest, the Prince and Princess of Wales chatted with vendors and heard about the measures that have been put in place to ensure the site is both ethically and environmentally sustainable, such as removing single use plastics and a commitment to paying staff a real living wage'.

The couple got into the swing of things by mixing cocktails.

It was an incredibly fun activity.

Their last port of call was 'Carrick Connect' -- a charity which helps young people facing difficulties.

The charity offers essential mentoring services for 11- to 25-year-olds and operates a number of programmes supporting physical and mental wellbeing.

Kate was delighted to hold a baby during the visit.

Thousands gathered outside Carrickfergus Castle to meet the couple, including some very excited schoolchildren.

Kate was delighted to meet Nacho.

Niamh Campbell reported on chatter among the crowds.

How sweet is this? :)

Now for a look at Kate's baby blue and navy ensemble.

Several eagle-eyed royal watchers believe Kate wore a modified version of the baby blue coat she wore for a day of engagements in Cambridgeshire in June. You'll note significant alterations to the pockets and buttons. The designer of the piece was never identified.

Kate wore the Winser London Iconic Silk Blouse and Bow (with thanks to Kate Middleton Style).

The piece is described as:

'The ultimate bow blouse as featured in Vogue and Harper's. New stock just arrived in Ivory, Hollywood red, and Rhubarb. New Winser blue shade arriving next week. Sorry the soft blue worn by Catherine, Princess of Wales is now in short supply, contact customer services. Designed in our exclusive silk fabric with a touch of stretch our tie can be worn in a variety of ways, tied into a fashionably glamorous pussy bow, softly draped at the front, tied around the waist. The tie is detachable so it also be worn as a simple silk blouse'.

The Princess carried her DeMellier Nano Montreal bag in navy. It's available for pre-order here.

Kate added a touch of pink with her Missoma earrings. The £85 pair remain in stock on Missoma's website.

Kate completed the look with navy trousers and her Gianvito Rossi 105 pumps in navy.

The first of many visits to Northern Ireland for William and Kate as Prince and Princess of Wales.

  1. Ok I’m really silly but I love it when William and Catherine co-ordinate. It photographs so much better in my opinion! And the Princess looks stunning as always. Love the blouse and coat.

  2. The overall look is very pretty and calming. A very nice look for a visit.

  3. I love seeing her in polished solids, separates, and pants for engagements!

  4. I love Kate's variation on dark trousers and shoes with a coloured blazer - by wearing a long coat, she lifts it from "business wear" to "royal visit" without being over fussy or dressy.
I'm sure the boxed flowers were given with the best of intentions, but she couldn't haul them around for long!

  5. Do you think the handbag was a nod to The Queen? She's been carrying a bag like that more frequently since QE2 died, or maybe I'm noticing it more. Either way, she looks amazing as always!

    1. No, small bags with a top handle have been trendy for awhile now as opposed to a traditional clutch. Meghan has carried them too.

      Delete
    2. She actually started carrying bags other than clutches a few years ago, after Meghan Sussex happened upon the scene. MS isn't much of a clutch person; she likes handled bags. I don't think it's a stretch to guess that the Princess began to see then that she didn't always have to carry a clutch; she could opt for the more fashionable handled bags.

I own a couple of DeMellier bags myself and was carrying one last night -- the midi Venice, in a burgundy shade. My other example is a navy Berlin, a model I think has been discontinued. The Nano Montreal is a bit too small to be at all practical; it's the sort of bag you carry just for effect. However, since the royals don't really need handbags, carrying one for effect is pretty much what they do!

    3. Interesting thought! Knowing Kate's penchant for such things, it's possible!? :)

  6. Oh how I love those two doing joint engagements together!! And they are matching in blue hues, how darling!! The Princess looks flawless, but I feel she is always that way. God bless her gene pool, haha. Lovely engagement they attended to bring awareness on such a troubling issue. ♥️

  7. Polished and professional. There's not much more to say. The coat is beautifully cut, as with all her coats. I always envy that and am always taking new coats off to my tailor to get a more "bespoke" line and look.

  8. Kate is wearing more pants in the manner of the Scandinavian royal ladies. She looks wonderful, polished and comfortable. It is interesting to see the changes in dress even this close to the sad passing of QEII. Maybe the younger royal ladies are now more at ease with small changes in the "dress code". What is next, colored nail polish?

    ReplyDelete

    1. They've already worn colored nail polish. The Princess has worn red polish on her toenails, and Sophie Wessex frequently wears colored polish. Diana wore it, too. The notion that there's been some rule against it is pretty much a media invention. There have been several such unfounded claims over the years.

  9. A very good look for Kate today, slim pants suit her and work with the length of the coat.

I read that Kate was heckled today. Any visit to Northern Ireland is going to be contentious given the history. The province continues to shift towards becoming part of Ireland once again as the population shifts politically.

Charlotte- I know many of your readers come for the fashion but love the historical information you provide. Perhaps you can add some context here? Especially given the feelings around colonialism being expressed during their recent tour.

    1. Celtic, I'll keep it brief. Ireland was under British rule until the war of independence in 1919. The Republic of Ireland was formed in 1921. Obviously the history goes back through the ages. A lot of lives lost and bad feeling on both sides because of it. Things are much better now because of the efforts on both sides and even the late Queen played her part, which I might add was a very important and of huge significance, not only in the North but also in the Republic when she spoke in Irish. Its a very interesting but sad history definitely worth reading up on.. S. ☺

    2. I heard that too. Also saw the photo. It looked like he woman was holding Kates hand very tight. Where were her body guards. They should be right around her.

      Delete
    3. Agreed. Heckling is awkward, but the woman is right -- Northern Ireland has suffered greatly, as has the rest of Ireland, due to the colonial influence of England. (My PhD topic!) I love royals for the fashion and history but we can't ignore the reality behind the pictures.

      Delete
    4. Ignore what? Kate has absolutely no power to decide the present or future of Ireland. It’s the government people should complain to, not to the apolitical and powerless representative of the State.

      Delete
    5. I'll add to what the Anon said (in response to an Anon question) that when the independent Republic of Ireland was founded in 1921, 6 northern counties became Northern Ireland and remained part of the United Kingdom. A major reason for this was the large number of Protestant residents there, people of Scottish and Anglo-Scots ancestry. They did not wish to leave the UK and become citizens of a largely Roman Catholic republic.

For people who have been confused about this for decades, that, in a nutshell, is the source of the political/sectarian Troubles that so bedeviled Northern Ireland for so long. The Northern Irish who wished to join the Republic made that clear, sometimes via terrorism; the Protestants and the British government fought back, sometimes violently. The conflict isn't over. It continues, but the violence, thankfully, has subsided.

My own Anglo-Scots ancestors were among those settled in Ulster Plantation in the 17th century. As a historian, I have long taken an interest in the region and its sorrows.

    6. Oh that's great Amy, with your PhD! topic you would be in a better position than myself to recommend reading material. My Great Grandfather fought on the streets of Cork as the British burned our city as punishment for a ambush by the IRA on British troops in Cork. They also had to fight street by street fighting British soldiers. Also fighting their back up the black and tans their back up who shot our Lord Mayor dead in his home. Fast forward a 100 years and the people of Cork came out in their droves to welcome Queen Elizabeth and her husband. While we should and never will forget our history we also need to learn from it. I really feel its called history for a reason. Its the past. There is so much hate, anger and suffering going on in the world today, it breaks my heart. What was it that Queen Elizabeth said in Dublin Castle, We all wish things had happened differently. I totally respect that woman's opinion and right to express it but absolutely nothing The Princess of Wales can do about, apart from smile and move on. S. ☺

    7. The most interesting reading material on the subject of Northern Ireland that I've recently read is Patrick Radden Keefe's "Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland." A quite searing look at the Troubles, it was published just a couple of years ago and won or was nominated for several prizes. I recommend it highly.

My own field in history is Early Modern Europe, and 17th-century England is one of my areas of specialization. Any student of modern British involvement in Ireland needs to start with the English Civil War and Oliver Cromwell.

But this is a conflict of centuries. There will be hiccups along the way.

  15. Looks like they had a great day out. The blue coat is beautiful on her. Not too sure about a shirt, tie and jumper under a blazer. I'd go with either the shirt and tie or a light cotton jumper on its own. That woman in green must feel very strongly about her views to wait to see someone to be rude to them. The people in the North had their vote. PEACE. All living side by side in peace. As I have said here before they got a fantastic reception here in the Republic of Ireland. As his Father has many times now. As for the reception the late Queen got that's a different matter. I understand she was very surprised at the very warm welcome she got wherever she went. Especially in Cork, The Queen arrived and she shut down the city. The people came out to greet her. She stayed longer than planned and went on a unplanned walk about. So they have been to Wales now the North of Ireland, I would expect a visit to Scotland will be next. S. ☺

    1. A great many northern Irish want to join the Republic. That's always been the case; they've always felt strongly about it; they always will. The royals simply have to expect such comments and be prepared to handle them with equanimity and aplomb. I wouldn't say the woman was "rude," simply that she seized the opportunity to say how she felt, but without being genuinely unpleasant, however much some of us might think this was the wrong venue and the wrong person to whom to express her thoughts, given that the royals have no power in the matter. That's how free polities work and should.

      Delete
    2. Vitt, I'm going to own that, maybe rude was a bit strong. She wasn't, I just found it disrespectful to The Princess of Wales when she has no control over the situation or the past. S. ☺

    3. This is not a political blog, I will only say that I am usually on the side of the oppressed. There are rarely adequate times and places to voice one's protest. I can understand the wish of the woman to be heard. That being said, I think Kate handled a very uncomfortable situation masterfully.

      Delete
    4. S. And Victoria, re “rudeness”, a comment in general: just because someone is a public figure, it doesn’t mean that our own innate rules of politeness to an invited guest (even Sinn Fein were happy to see them)—if such rules still exist—shouldn’t stand. What I saw about that woman was that she literally grabbed Kate’s hand, held it while she had her phone up in the other hand, and made herself the focus of the exchange. It looked more infantile than expressive—look at ME, look at ME—especially with the sound turned off, which is the way most people view the walkabouts. Sadly the media had to make a big deal out of a small exchange. And now here we are discussing it (wry smile.) Valerie in Arizona

I loved the look of the outfit however, I am tired of blue on Kate, the kids and mostly William. Other than at Earthshot, I don't ever think I've seen him in any other color. This would have been such a great opportunity to wear green for Ireland and I think they both look fantastic in green. Imagine Kate's outfit in green and royal green... drooool.

  19. As a Northern Irish person I am horrified at the rude & unpleasant demeanour of the person who so unkindly heckled Kate. She most certainly does not represent the majority of us - neither in our views nor our attitudes. I'm only sorry she captured the attention of the media and others. As mentioned above, this is a non-story & so I will finish my comment by remarking on the wonderfully calm & magnanimous attitude displayed by Kate as well as her impeccable style. 1. Yes I agree. I think as she approaches her middle years she should be either trimming her hair or wearing it up more often. A more sophisticated hairstyle suits older women and she looks beautiful with her hair done that way. There is nothing more aging than long flowing hair with an older face. She hasn't any significant wrinkles yet but is starting to show lines around her jaw and mouth. I do hope she doesn't resort to cosmetic surgery and is willing to show that aging women can still be attractive. without drastic attempts to retain their youthful appearance. Annette NZ

The woman who accosted Kate, grabbing onto her while she filmed the encounter, was just plain rude. The way she held onto her hand looked actually painful for Kate. She can hold political views but this was not the time for rudeness considering W & K were there at the invitation of a democratically elected government and were welcomed by members of said government. 27. This is supposed to be a reply to celticgirl about heckling. (Hitting Reply doesn't work for me.) What was so impressive about the incident was that it seemed almost to be a conversation, and that it appeared to take place without rancour. What your foreign followers may not know is that in the UK, independence movements do not necessarily demand republican constitutions. (Consider the Commonwealth.) That is certainly the case here in Scotland. I could say more but I realise that your readers may not be interested in constitutional matters, so I won't. The main point is that such discussions do not have to take place angrily.

    1. Thank you, I for one find it very interesting.
But isn't there a difference between Scotland and Northern Ireland in terms of what the independence movements want?

      Delete
    2. Yes there is a big difference because many people in Scotland who want to be independent from England could accept Charles as their own Head of State. After all the new heir to the throne - William - is a descendent of several Stuart kings. They could become independent and also remain in the Commonwealth as another realm. It is trickier with Northern Ireland as if that area united with the Irish republic they would have to take on the present Irish president and also leave the Commonwealth. (However it would solve their trading problems with the EU. and they may feel it is a realistic solution. )

  28. A great day, indeed! It's always so good to see them together in their engagements to highlight great organization that provide assistance and solutions to difficult problems.
As we said for motherhood, also for personal struggle there souldn't be any stigma in speak out and ask for help. Not easy, but it's good to be aware of someone who can listen and help.
The outfit's: I like their matching color! And I really like P.Kate's color choice of matching blouse and long coat. I must admit that I prefer her with low waist trousers, but I know they're not in fashion and they'd be less elegant than these ones.
I noticed something strange with her eyebrows...they seem too short or maybe it was the photo angle.
    Anyway, always stunning!

  36. I wonder if it will ever be in the cards for her to get her own Princess title? Maybe William bestows it on her when he ascends the throne? Don’t get me wrong, I am in complete favour of cutting down on those titles in general. But she IS a full time working HRH royal, the mother of a future king and as it stands a future Queen. Whatever may happen, she will be a constant. And it looks as if she will be the the Princess of Wales and Queen. So it’s not as if making her a real Princess would create an unnecessary position to someone irrelevant to the system.

    1. She has always been Princess William of Wales from the day of her marriage. After the death of her blessed Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles made William Prince of Wales, thus Catherine became Princess of Wales, succeeding Queen Consort Camilla, who never used that title in deference to Diana.
No, Catherine will never be a princess in her own right, not being a princess of the Royal Blood.
I’m really curious: this isn’t 1722. Why would you care?

  37. The wives don't need "princess titles" in their own right. They hold theirs by virtue of marriage, which represents being a "real princess," even if you weren't born one. Catherine is a royal highness and a royal duchess (all royal duchesses are princesses by marriage). Nothing would really change in her life, if, by some odd quirk of a decision, King Charles decided to create her a princess on the same level as, say, Princess Anne.

In other words, she is a "real princess" and is already the Princess of Wales, like William's mother was. I am puzzled by your post.

  38. A softer and more flattering color than that Dijon mustard shade. Not a fan of floppy bow blouses but overall a lovely look for the PoW.
