In the video Kate says she and William want all children to get the support they need during difficult times to help them overcome challenges. The Duchess believes schools need to prioritize the mental wellbeing of their students in addition to academic success to allow every child to have a "firm foundation, for the happy, healthy future they deserve". The Duchess continued: "While we cannot always change a child's circumstances, we can give them tools to cope and thrive."
The highlight of the video for me was seeing Kate interact with a group of children from Salusbury Primary school in Queen's Park, London, who have benefited from Place2Be programmes. The Duchess asks the children: "Do you all talk to your friends about your feelings too? Sometimes there're things you probably don't feel like sharing with your friends but at least you've got an adult you can trust." A little boy asked Kate if she would have liked a Place2Be at school: "I would love to have had it. I think everyone would really benefit from having something like a Place2Be and being able to talk."
It is the third video message Kate has recorded since joining the Royal family. The first was released during Children's Hospice Week in support of East Anglia's Children's Hospices in 2013 and the second was also for Place2Be and released last year.

Kate also highlights the vital role of schools in providing emotional support, saying: "Schools are uniquely placed to provide emotional support, working with children and their families - this is something that Place2Be understands.'
Catherine Roche, Chief Executive of Place2Be said "We are hugely grateful to The Duchess for helping to remove the stigma around children’s mental health and for shining a spotlight on the value of supporting children in school from an early age.”

The statistics provide a wealth of evidence pointing to a significant need for early mental health support:
- One in ten children aged between 5 and 16 years (three in every classroom) has a mental health problem, and many continue to have these problems into adulthood. Half of those with lifetime mental health problems first experience symptoms by the age of 14.
- Among teenagers, rates of depression and anxiety have increased by 70% in the past 25 years.
- One in five children have symptoms of depression and almost a third of 16 to 25-year-olds surveyed had thought about or attempted suicide.
- Ten years ago, detailed estimates put the cost of mental health problems in England at £77 billion, including lost productivity and the wider impacts on wellbeing. More recent estimates suggest the costs may be closer to £105 billion.
- Children are less likely to suffer from serious mental health difficulties in later life if they receive support at an early age, providing a cost saving to adult mental health services.
- Growing evidence indicates that promoting positive mental health also improves a range of positive school outcomes, including enhanced academic progress, better attendance and lower exclusion rates.
Kate became royal patron of Place2Be in April 2013 and since then has developed an increasing interest in young people's mental health and early intervention. I expect this is at least partly related to her involvement with the organisation through a number of engagements in which she has had the opportunity to meet those providing support and those benefiting from it.
In November, the Duchess attended the Place2Be headteacher conference where she gave a speech emphasising the need for early intervention: "Imagine if everyone was able to help just one child who needs to be listened to, needs to be respected, and needs to be loved – we could make such a huge difference for an entire generation." The focus on mental health will continue on 17 February when Kate welcomes a team from The Huffington Post to help raise awareness and launch a new initiative - Young Minds Matter.

For those considering it, I volunteer whenever time permits with a fantastic organisation and have found it thoroughly rewarding and enriching. Seeing the level of dedication and commitment that simply goes into keeping the lights on through fundraising efforts and initiatives to provide the best service possible has been a real eye-opener concerning the struggles charities face. It's also been very inspiring and heartening to see first-hand the difference volunteering can make. It's a great way to give back to your community and hopefully helps make a difference.

I thought the video message was really very good; both interesting and engaging. It was also very professionally done and Kate appeared very confident, assured and very much at ease when talking to the children. I think it will be immensely helpful in terms of raising awareness for Children's Mental Health Week.
Readers will recognise Kate's Rebecca Taylor suit in the video. Kate first wore the jacket and skirt in April 2012 for the Scott-Amundsen Centenary Race to the South Pole and more recently in New Zealand in 2014. The suit is from the designer's Pre-Fall 2012/2013 Collection. Both pieces are crafted in heavily textured melange weft. The jacket features frayed trim and sequin floral embellishment at the neck.

ReplyDeleteI think that she spoke very well indeed. I am glad that she did not shake or touch her hair even once. She appears to have really put in a lot of work. The video really shows how incredibly beautiful she is in real life. Many people who have seen her in person have commented that she is more gorgeous in person than she appears in pictures. The coloring and the soft-spoken tones all add to her beauty.

DeleteGreat to see Kate supporting this great cause again!! I wish we had someone like her in Germany to highlight the importance in giving children this particular support. We all know that many families are unable to provide a stable, safe and secure environment for their children to grow up in, yet in Germany (at least in the Southern part where I live), schools still consider this as a totally "private" matter where they shouldn´t interfere unless and until a child shows such a behaviour that the "smooth operation" of the class or even the school is severly disrupted.

ReplyDeleteI liked her hair much better here than yesterday - while I know there are some who like it longer, the longer length always leads to her fiddling with it. In the video, it is a very good length and I like the suit too.
Rebecca you are right about the queen's jubilee outfit although the hat in Germany was hugely different (and much better) and I'm sure you're right about the yellow being repeated although what I found for the trooping had blue trim. Just wish Kate didn't so often repeat at home and save the new for tours although there was a bit more new last autumn.
But this is a very good video.
Julia, as you are suggesting, Rebecca is absolutely right about the yellow Angela Kelly outfit. The Queen wore it 3 times with the same hat (no blue colour added), while choosing to wear a different brooch for each outing.

As far as the Queen's white Jubilee outfit by Angela Kelly is concerned, in addition to her recycle for the State visit to Germany in 2015, she already wore the dress, without coat or hat, for the State visit to France in 2014. :)
Rebecca, I really like how the Queen recycles important outfits for important occasions. I think she is very, very good at fashion, colour and brooch diplomacy. And I hope she is having a lot of fun with it. From what I see, Catherine very much follows in her footsteps.
The British Monarchy website also gives insight on the fabric used for the Queen's wardrobe: “Angela Kelly is Personal Assistant and Senior Dresser to The Queen. Her role includes designing for The Queen, which she has done since 2002. Angela and her team try and use both old and new fabrics when designing. Some of the material they incorporate has been given to Her Majesty many years ago, some dates from when she was Princess Elizabeth.”
Imagine the surprise of someone who gave some fabric to HM, let’s say in the 1970s, to open the morning paper over breakfast and what do they see? Queen Elizabeth in a brand new Angela Kelly design made out of THEIR fabric!

The Queen's wardrobe improved tremendously when Angela Kelly came on the scene. Prior to that, the Queen dressed like the Queen Mother. Her hats were small and not particularly flattering, and she owned enough floral print dresses to fill a field in the countryside.

ReplyDeleteThere was only onee thing which was a bit off is the Q-A type of thing with the children. After the first question I found the whole thing LOL.
I know it was not her idea but kind of reminded me -sorry I can't come up with a better word than- an interrogation rather than a friendly chat, they should have done something together meanwhile for example playing or drawing rather than sitting there awkwardly. But this matters not in the end. The result is better than ever and a very worthy cause I hope we'll see her pursuing it in the future more.

Kate should absolutely be commended for this, it's such a worthy cause and she was very good in the video. She has improved, and will continue to do so. The more she does the better she gets, which is why getting out there is important... but let's not go down that rabbit hole ;)
DeleteShe needs to relax a little, which will come. Great advice I got once, act like you're talking to your mother or best friend and telling her about something important to you. Your face, eyes etc should convey your passion as well.
And yes the children were a great touch, some rough spots I agree but that's on the production team!
On a completely unrelated topic, I'm always astounded at how quickly people can ID a piece of clothing. From that pic of the blue coat I wouldn't even know where to begin... how do you all do it? I'm honestly intrigued, are you just up on every line out there right now? As I've said before I am in awe of the fashion crowd here :)

Her eyes and face lit up when speaking with the children and they were so darling...very comfortable with her. Kate truly loves children. Such a fantastic job she and William are doing. Love it!

It is clear that the children have been deeply involved, because they look aware of what is happening: it is beautiful to see such an involvement.

DeleteRegarding the sapphire and diamond earrings that Kate wore in the video, has anyone conclusively decided whether they are, in fact, Diana's earrings made into a drop earring for Kate? Before, there seemed to be some question as to the number of diamonds surrounding Diana's sapphire earrings as opposed to the number of diamonds surrounding the drop earrings Kate wears. The comparable size of the sapphires themselves had been questioned also I think.

DeleteI think it would have been less awkward if the children and Kate had been engaged in doing crafts of some sort whilst talking with the children. We have seen her do that many times before but without the conversation being recorded. That would have been perfect then in my opinion with specific conversation topics introduced to the children. Otherwise it was too formal and not just a little stilted and contrived. Glad they did what they did though as it is is a start and a good improvement from the original video. She certainly has a VERY proper, aristocratic accent, even more so than William. lol. She's a lovely lady.
ReplyDeleteI see your point, but considering the age of the kids I don't think playing would have helped. They had probably practiced what they wanted to say and they're at the age where they are aware of the camera even if they are being distracted with something so I think they just want to do a good job. If they were younger I would had agreed with you but considering their age I think this was the wisest choice or it might have looked like they were "fake playing" since they would probably only be playing for looks while still thinking about the filming. Just my opinion ofc :)

DeleteOK..it's great she made a video for mental health week but here is why I have an issue with Kate: she didn't go the extra mile and actually schedule an engagement during mental health week. There is zero reason for her not to.
DeleteAdditionally, Kate spent 3000 pounds of public funds to fly a helicopter back to Norfolk. The queen didn't even use one to go back to London she took the train
On the helicopter issue: The pilot and the helicopter is paid for either way by year. The only difference is the petrol. And flying the helicopters makes the need for security less than travelling by car, usually. Also, for all we know the helicopter was going up to sandringham anyways to bring down Charles. The queen is the one who okays all the helicopter travel and clearly it was thought that Kate needed it the most at the time. Maybe to get her back home earlier to pick up George or change Maria of her shift. I don't know the specifics and neither do you but the train thing for ex probably cost more money in security checks (and the dogs go by plane or car so that travel is done either way). That trainride is pure publicity in my mind. Nothing wrong with that, but it's probably more expensive than if she had taken the helicopter.
DeleteCharities ask their patrons to attend events and not the other way round. Richard Palmer reported the helicopter cost to taxpayers but was soon taken to task on twitter and backed off a bit. Palmer admitted a few weeks ago that nothing interesting is happening in Royal circles. No one is providing scandals so reporters are looking for something to stir interest. The helicopter is available to all BRF and logistics are taken into account. Harry and William are often seen coming and going without any comment.

I think the children were relaxed and had no difficulty communicating their thoughts. They are old enough to sit at a table and have a conversation. Crafts, etc., would have been a distraction and minimized their contribution to the video. They did great, IMO. :)

Two great news stories are featured here within a single day and now we have to make it about a helicopter when members of the Firm have used one to get to and from *engagements* since before Kate was born.

Here in the states the Obamas have been on the receiving end as well with their many trips, the hourly cost of Air Force One is astronomical.
The overall cost of the helicopter is in the RF budget, and hourly flying costs are expensive, so the RF needs to be judicious with it so they don't blow the budget on frivolous or unnecessary trips. Just as if you bought an expensive dress, you'd have less to spend on shoes to match, we can all relate to that right ;)
I personally don't pay much mind to these stories because I think if anyone wants to go after how the family spends taxpayer money there's larger fish to fry. Though a republican acquaintance once said, "yes but we may have to go the route of death by a thousand cuts" -
Again, the tabloids love them because they get a reaction, and so far everyone's reacting as expected - Just look at the indignation brought on here! I expect it will be the subject of a few radio call in shows as well... just part of living a public life!

Chiming in on this. Helicopter flights are used by everyone from Charles to Anne and Sophie to and from their homes to engagements. Kate was no different. The Queen's journey is very different as she had no engagement and was moving court, probably with a sizeable entourage who wouldn't fit in a chopper. Her journey also has an aspect of publicity in it as the media know when she is leaving, making it a higher security risk. Security checks and arrangements would have been made in advance. Arguably the Queen's journey would have been more time consuming and perhaps more expensive to staff and the taxpayer. But it is good PR. In the nutshell, you cannot compare apples to oranges.

Oh no, being thrifty, the lady brought hearty, healthy, home-made sandwiches. In her big green travelling bag. Plus sparkling water, of course. DeleteThere are people who like to live in town. They spent all their weekends in town. They love it. Wonderful. I am happy for them. :)
There are also people who have to live in town for different reasons. All the people in this category that I personally know and who can afford to leave town for the week-end, that’s the first thing they do on Friday once work is over. Some sleep in tents, stay with friends or in Bed & Breakfasts, others own a small cottage or a huge country home. They all go back to town late on Sunday evening or if possible Monday morning. If this is what makes them happy, I am happy for them. :)
Then there are those who live in the countryside. They love it. They never ever go to town. Not ever for a weekend. Am I happy for them? Definitely. :)
And then there are William and Catherine. They live in the countryside. For a number of reasons, I think that this is an excellent choice, especially with small children. They work at home, nearby, in town and, in fact, they work all over the place. So if this is what works for them (no pun intended) at this time of their lives, I am happy for them. :)
As far as their London apartment is concerned, I can see no wrong. There are so many people in this world who have more than one (from very modest to massive) place to stay, be it in town, in the countryside, on different continents, on boats, in mobile homes, … Personally I don’t mind a (more) nomad lifestyle. :)
I obviously don’t know what Catherine thinks but I am very much interested to know whether you know it for a fact that they didn't have a farewell dinner with the Queen scheduled during her last weekend at Sandringham or other engagements that would have prevented them to go and spend it in town. :)

I was surprised at how the video was made as I was expecting her to read out lines from a script for 2 minutes. I agree with the others that the video was rehearsed before the recording, hence the comfort level between them. Can't wait for the spring tour!!!XOXO
ReplyDeleteWonderful post Charlotte. Kate was terrific. Her compassion, gentility and love of children shone through. Her interaction with the kids was perfect, and yet the seriousness of the topic was evident. On a lesser note, she looked gorgeous. She is a beautiful soul, inside and out.
ReplyDeleteAs a parting shot I must observe, that no matter what she does, it will never be enough for the naysayers. She should just keep on her path. One day she will be a phenomenal queen.
My feelings about the royal flight are more general - not just applicable to Kate - there have recently been similar stories about other royal family members - Charles, Camilla and Andrew come immediately to mind but there may be others. It's my feeling if the royal family wishes to maintain the royal flight, they need to use it very judiciously and this isn't always happening.
ReplyDeleteTimes change, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who remembers the queen's tears at the loss of Britannia. Royals aren't just rich people - they have to be in tune with the country - how they behave during times of war in the past was different than peace - the sixies different than the eighties - so saying something has always been there doesn't make it right.
At this point, transportation has become more difficult and expensive for all but the queen's most wealthy subjects. Being royal is as much about perception as anything else - maybe pilots have to always be on duty - maybe not - my feeling is to preserve the flight (a possible target in cut-backs) is to use it wisely. It should be restricted when other transportation such as trains aren't readily available, when distances are long, and when engagements are close together.
Kate had the misfortune to fly home right at a time the queen was photographed (in a coat she wore in Germany)coming back on the train from the same place Kate was going to. The queen may simply prefer the train but it does make her look thrifty (something she has been very good at doing) while it makes Kate look extravagant. (And no point in saying the queen wasn't working, she entertained foreign guests at Sandringham.)
These remarks aren't because I "hate" Kate. She isn't the only one where this issue has come up - but just to look at this particular case:
My feeling on Kate is thus:
1. She and William have chosen to live some distance from London even though a London flat is maintained for them - so every mitigation should be taken not to make that a noticeable expense on the royal purse. The same would be true with Charles and Highgrove and so on.
2. Kate does not work every day or even multiple times a week so a few hours on the train would hardly be a burden to her.
3. Train service is available and the trip is fairly short.
4. If the queen can take the train there is no security concern.
Therefore, I think Kate would have done well to take the train - the good will would be substantial as it is every time the queen is seen on the platform - and there is plenty of good reading to pass the times - Two current bestsellers include the Romanovs - (Written by the POW's good friend Tara's sister's husband) or for soemthing a bit lighter - the thriller "The Girl on the Train".

DeleteBeing an American, I do not have the same concern that the British do concerning the finances and funding of the BRF but isn't the entire premise of being royal elitist and that they are afforded perks that the ordinary person does not have. I understand that over the top extravagance is bad and that waste should not happen, however, doesn't their very position in life afford them the odd helicopter ride home. It seems as if they are nickeled and dimed for
every move they make, and that people feel they should live with all the inconveniences the average person experiences. It is as if people want the idea of a royal family but when they live like one, people get upset.
That's an important caveat Julia that I meant to add to my previous comment. What can give these stories more "oomph" or legs is the subject and circumstances involved.

Also, stories like this are a brief sizzle for some royals, but a hotter flame for others. Hard working royals can brush it off (though Charles gets hit with the environmental comparison now too) whereas it was death for Fergie or others.
When I harp on and on that Kate and William need to be doing more and cultivating a better relationship with the press, and you all think I'm mad :) this is what I'm anticipating.
The questions Julia raised will be raised by many other Brits, and the line "they don't want to be full time royals but they want all the royal perks!" gets trotted out more frequently it seems to me. They need to be careful of that.
Optics matter. As I said, the tabloids love these stories because they get an instant and fierce reaction, and in some cases it's quite justified.
And yes, as Julia mentioned, the royals are in a strange place, they are wealthy but can't appear wealthy! They have to be in tune with the country, like any public official frankly.

The only reason negative press would matter is if one thinks it will lead to the elimination of any tax support for the monarchy, or I am assuming that is the concern? DeleteI see some people's points here but I think we should also be educated on the facts that the stories often tweak to embellish their stories. Helicopters are leased by year and there are pilots on the royal payroll. The 3k sum is plucked as if they are hiring a private chopper. The Royal Family operate within budget and the Queen has the final say on things. It's like last time when the royals leased a second helicopter and papers ran with the headline that taxpayers would pay 8m for William's new ride. In my view it is very clear that press are trying to make stories out of nothing to stir people and get clicks. The Daily Mail loves nothing more than to bully , build up and knock down. People cry that they want to see Kate and the moment she does, some pick on anything to knock her back down. Let us be educated and fair. Papers serve their bottomlines. Remember that.

I can't say I agree with your comment at all Royalfan. The quiet periods exacerbate underlying concerns people have with William and Kate and the way they keep shop. Just because you agree with everything they do doesn't mean everyone else does. These issues people bring up are not imaginary - they are there. Kate and William live a part time royal life and pretty much do whatever they want most of the time, yet still enjoy the perks more senior royals do. There's so much evidence over the last five years that backs this up its ridiculous.

DeleteRegarding the London vs. Anmer debate ... with the exception of Diana, I'm not aware of another member of the BRF who stays in London any longer than necessary. The Queen runs to Windsor at every opportunity and Charles has Highgrove and Birkhall to run to. And Camilla still enjoys the house she lived in prior to her marriage to Charles. William will be king; it is not unreasonable for him and his family to have a residence in London and one in the country. It was okay for the sister of the Queen to occupy Apartment A-1, but not a future king and queen?
As for the "pretty much do whatever they want most of the time", aside from sounding like sour grapes, that is a sweeping dismissal of William's job which happens to be a dangerous one, and Kate concentrating on raising two children.
No other RF has a similar scenario with three living heirs in the wings. And if people stop to consider the recent, and controversial, history of the BRF, the current scenario makes perfect sense.
In her day, Elizabeth *was* the next in line and it did not prevent her from enjoying as normal a family life as possible with her husband and children until her father's death changed her life forever.
The same "forever" awaits William and Kate. In the meantime, it is not unreasonable for them to enjoy some of the "now" while there is an heir between them and the throne. NOT the case in Elizabeth's day.
Anonymous 02:24 -- I imagine that you have as many people who would agree with you as would disagree with you. Fair go. Differences of opinion are the spice of life. But let's agree that each of us is as valid as the other. We would have to have an election to know which is in the majority and does it really matter? So W & K don't "need to catch up" because everything they do is still being publicized and charities and organizations are still interested in having them as their patron.

I wanted to point out that the negative and positive comments are both valid and everyone has their opinion. You don't get people complaining about all the positive comments, do you?
DeleteBut it's even more than that. I get the impression that the negative comments are dismissed as being made-up stories or something. Then the "jealous" and "sour grapes" comments come up. I wanted to point out that there's definitely a grounding for the negative comments, as I'm sure there are for the positive ones.
I am actually totally fine with them having two residences - I think they just should have thought about the way it might be portrayed in the media because they did the renovations on one and then barely lived in it before moving, and doing more renovations on, Amner Hall.
I'm not dismissing Williams job - did I say that William did nothing? But I am saying he's "dismissing" his job in the royal family for the time being. When I say that they "do whatever they want", I'm talking about Williams choice to continue with his job and Kate's choice to stay at home with her kids, and the choices they make regarding their work with the royal family.
I also never said there was anything wrong with those choices. But then when people do complain about those choices, don't sigh and wish people focused more on her work and causes...It can be difficult to take Kate's work seriously after the choices she's made in her life. Personally, I am disappointed with Kate, and it's not going to take one good video to make me suddenly think she's turned a new leaf, just like I took me a while to reach my current opinion of her.
So in fact there is something "preventing people from speaking about and focusing on her work and causes". That is, her choice to not take her work seriously from the start. Again, it's her choice. But she has to deal with the consequences, like bad PR for taking a helicopter ride. I'm sure this wouldn't have been a big deal if people thought Kate was doing enough. Valerie - thanks for your reply. I'm happy for people to agree or disagree. But I have to say that people were still interested in Charles even with his controversy in the 1990s. They're royals and charities need them. It will be interesting to see how things work out for the Royal family in the future. I'm still of the opinion that a lot of this will come back to bite W and K one day, but who knows?!

Really? How do you *know* what's in Kate's mind, or William's? How do you know that the current game plan isn't fully sanctioned, even encouraged, within the RF? I made a valid comparison regarding the Queen and PP when they were first married...and she *was* the next in line at the time. Again, not the case today. I offered another valid reference to more recent BRF history, but this too is never entertained. Odd, IMO, since it does seem to be behind much of what is being done (or not) today.
And frankly, what difference does it make how much time they spend under KP's roof or the one at AH? Both residences were renovated and prepared (KP after *decades*) for a young family that will continue to use them for many, many years to come. How they split their time is their business. Do people concern themselves with the way other royals split their time between London and the country? No, and why would they?
So, yes, sometimes it does become difficult to ignore the concept of sour grapes. Especially when some of the criticism can be somewhat personal in nature. Comments such as "I wouldn't mind, but..." "I'm fine with them having two homes, but...", etc. Such comments are judgmental and almost seem to imply that the commenter has first hand knowledge of what is in William and/or Kate's mind(s). We may agree or disagree with the way the Firm is operating in 2016, but to lay it all at the feet of W&K, and label them as being unwilling or disinterested, is extremely unfair.
Regarding people complaining about positive comments, well, actually they have. :) But given that it's a blog devoted to Kate, one that is written in a respectful and upbeat manner, I think there's a place for them. If I followed a CP Mary blog, I would hope to find more support than not.
I am as interested in Kate as anyone here, but I do wonder, if, in their heart of hearts, William and Kate would prefer to live 'ordinary' (not'public' lives, and that's not a criticism of them). In William's relatively recent interview about his decision to work with the air ambulance his desire to do a 'grounded' job came through very strongly.

Kate is an easy target for the critics. She is not suppose to be in the position of being a royal wife. She doesn't have the right pedigree. DeleteDo we know when this video was filmed and where? I think Kate is getting more and more confident and the more she does it, the better she'll get. Her message is also slightly more complex. Maybe she'll do it again next year and we will see an evolution in how mental health in children is tackled. That would be brilliant.

ReplyDeleteI'd like Kate to draw more attention to adult mental health issues. (She's a bit too involved with championing children's causes, the 'easier' option). It can be very difficult for adults to access help for a variety of reasons: I tried to access help on behalf of a friend and it was a very negative experience. I know that she is involved in adult addiction charities, but not every adult with mental health issues has an addiction problem.
ReplyDeleteI am an adult with mental health issues. And I think her focus is not at ALL easy. Alot of medical professionals still don't belive that depression, anxiety and such can manifest itself in children. Which is just plain wrong. Children are seen as having "no troubles and no worries" until they act out and then it's usually to late. Also, Kate has been visiting a prison, she has been speaking with adults with mental health issues (through action on addiction). She has connection with a charity working with children of people with addictions and mental health issues or other bad family situations. Ofc there are alot of areas in adulthood that could use focus, but I think it's better to have a more focused area right now. I am proud that she is doing this. And yes, adult mental health needs alot of work. That doesn't mean that childrens mental health doesn't as well.

The key-word in Kate's action is "preventing". It's clear that she is deeply interested in adulthood's mental issues, because she is trying to make a large audience aware that many (if not all) mental problems in adulthood are rooted in childhood.
DeleteNOT all adults with mental health issues had problems as children, or difficult childhoods. Not all adults with mental health problems have spent time in prison or have addiction problems. Many are struggling to maintain a 'facade' of 'normal living' and are in work.

I think early intervention helps that there will be less adults with mental health problems. So more time and money will be available to help those who develop mental health problems as adults.

Yes, mental help support and all that it involves with children is crucial, but SO much more needs to be done for adults. And it is harder to attract funding for adults. I have worked on behalf of very high profile charities, and it is easier to raise funds on behalf of children's charities generally. Mental health charities for adults need a much higher profile, and the stigma of adult mental health needs to be removed. There can be a barrier for adults seeking mental help. AND it can impact on the lives of any children that they may have. I just wish that Kate would champion this as well in the same way. Adults aren't necessarily as 'cuddly' and photogenic as children, it can be more difficult for adult mental health publicity to pull on people's heart-strings in the same way. Just my two pennies worth!

ReplyDeleteAs to the helicopter "controversy"...I think people give too much credit to Kate or other royals ability to dictate. It's coming across like she CHOSE to travel by helicopter...that's not necessarily the case. Her protection detail can dictate travel methods. There could be any umber of reasons...completely out of Kate's control...why thatmethod of transport was chosen. Has it been stated that SHE wanted to travel that way?

The helicopter is a non issue to me. They all travel via helo. I have seen the Countess of Wessex use the helo many times and yet no one says a word. Catherine takes a ride and it's bad PR.

DeleteI absolutely loved this video, HRH was beyond fantastic–--poised yet at ease, informed, clearly passionate and very sensitive. The group of kids she was with was incredibly poised, articulate and charming (no surprise they were chosen!). I think HRH struck the right balance in message and said the absolute correct things ("different children have different circumstances and challenges"...it was gorgeous and sensitive; I found an earlier speech of hers, the one that included a comment about her lucky childhood/nurturing home or something to that effect (as opposed to those who didn't have one) which I felt UNINTENTIONALLY came across as a tad condescending. This time it was splendid. I would not change a dot on an "i" nor uncross any "t's." AND...I loved that she brought William into her conversation. Loved the hair, loved the suit. Silvia.

ReplyDeleteHello magazine just reported that William and Kate enjoyed a date night at the Crown's Inn in East Rudham, suitably enough. Apparently they had refreshments at the bar, wine for William, sparkling water for Kate. Then dinner at a table. Kate wore skinny jeans and a navy romper, I guess that means sweater. They left at around 10:30. Hope they had a sweet dinner together. The place looks so English and cozy. The menu you looks yummy also. Where are my airline tickets? :)

DeleteI know that there has been rumors that Kate is pregnant again, and a discussion on the last post, but I was looking and saw on another web page that William and Kate went out to dinner the other night? It also said that they left Pringe George and Princess Charlotte at home. It is a reasturant about 15 minutes away from Anmer Hall and they stayed until about 10:30 p.m.. The website also had some photos, I don't know if they were of that night or not, but I does look like Kate has a baby bump. Is it just me?

ReplyDeleteWe rarely see Catherine flying to engagements. As anyone thought for one moment that just maybe she had another stop? One of the behind the scenes stops? She looks like she changed clothes. Why? Why is carrying that big bag? Maybe she planned another stop and it was more feasible and safe to fly. I see no need to change clothes if I am going home. But she did.
Every post begins well and then slides into innuendo.
She was fabulous! She looked great! Her speech was oh so good...
Fly all you want I say! I always wonder what the Brits would feelike like if they they didn't have the Royal Family. Maybe the masses pay some for its upkeep but I think theyou bring in much money and jobs.

ReplyDeleteI haven't written in a while, but have been avidly reading Charlotte's Wonderful Posts & following as many Responses as possible. Great Discussions as always:)
I have been mulling over a thought that I've had, that was spurred along initially by a Book recommendation here, but I can't remember who suggested it? It's "The Diana Chronicles" & I was hesitant to read yet another
"Diana" Book, but the Book recommendation had somehow intrigued me enough ( eluding to it being different from the rest) that I gave it a go. I Highly recommend it, for it has so much Spencer & Fermoy History going back Centuries. If you are a History Buff like me, it's just Fascinating & The most intriguing thing is how her life played out in similar ways as those of several of her Spencer Ancestors, with regards to their close proximity in Court to the Monarchs (i.e. Charles II/ creating the Spencer/Churchills & Queen Anne building Blenheim for them) The most obvious comparisons of all can of course be made between Georgiana, the eventual Duchess of Devonshire (as played by Kiera Knightly in the Movie "The Duchess") where there Truly were 3 in that marriage, as well as how Georgiana was a Fashion Icon of her day & lent her Voice to Causes at a time when that just wasn't done! All this is to say, that the Book colored my glasses differently, as I now look at Kate & William. I look at all that tortured history, True loves denied; Women not having voices; The Men having such egocentric views of themselves & the lives they felt entitled to lead.... & I can't help but view William & The Life that Diana Fought to Give Him, as extraordinary, in that it was Actually Accomplished ! I know they are rich & Royal & have many perks & some people are not satisfied with their work loads, or how they choose to live their lives......... But after reading this book, I would beg all to remember from whence all this Tradition & Pomp Originated. Surely not by this young couple! I think how Princess Margret couldn't marry her True Love; Charles was led into his Marriage with the "Suitable" Lady Diana Spencer & how antiquated that all seems to us now, especially as he eventually married his Mistress....... Who could have imagined that just decades ago? So here we have it & I put it to you...... are people really so upset that The Cambridges don't Do Enough?.....Or..... Are they the least bit disappointed because their lives are rather Boring & Not Juicy with lots of Oooohs & Ahhhhs & OMG's Splashed across the papers & internet? I don't think people Really want anything bad to befall the Couple, but is it Possible that the fact that they Have been able to achieve some semblance of a "Normal" Life, while they are in the Early Years of Establishing Their Family........that they are just a tad too Boring for some? For myself, I am So Happy that they are living the Life that they are living:) It's a Dream Come True for William & it was the Sole Desire of HIs Mother, that he might love & be loved in such a way....... & to experience the loving home that Kate has created for them... So many of you chose the word "Mature" to describe what you felt watching Kate, in this Years Video Message. Like many have already said, They are Growing & Maturing into Their Roles, as Spouses, Parents & Royals ..... & will continue to do so for Years to Come. I'm Proud as Punch at the job Kate is doing, establishing Her Royal Self, while weaving in the Soft Touches from Her Personal Self, as Wife & Mother. I'm a big fan of the phrase "It's a Marathon, not a Sprint", when referring to their life as Royals, with two Heirs in their Family, I think They are Doing Just Great!:)

Becca, I cannot imagine a better or more sincere review of the book. Thank you! And I wholeheartedly agree with you about the amazing progress that W&K represent. How amazing it is that William's married life is the polar opposite of his mother's experience. Kate is a Godsend to William and the monarchy on so many levels.

DeleteAmen Becca. W & K canoodling in a restaurant after 15 years of being together. Charles and Diana were at each other's throats after 15 years. Diana was off trying to find love, being a fashion plate (have you seen photos of the dresses they are exhibiting right now), saving the world. Kate cares about others but her priorities are William and the children. And that means a lot to William, he has said so in many different ways. If that sounds sycophantic, so be it. I have been a royal fan since I waved to Queen Elizabeth when she did her Canadian tour in 1959.
DeleteValerie, you are a sister spirit. I waved to the Queen at Trooping the Color in 1959. Much later I realized she was pregnant with Prince Andrew then. That explained why she did not look entirely comfortable on her horse. Prince Philip was also on horseback. Their children, Prince Charles and Princess Anne, rode in a carriage with the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret. I was already a royal fan then, but my English friends really could not understand why!
