The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry arrived together.
They were welcomed by the Chapter, the Bishop of London, and the Archbishop of Canterbury.
It's a very special day for the Royal family - not only with the official celebrations of Her Majesty's landmark 90th taking place - but today is also Prince Philip's 95th birthday (sending him many happy returns). The day will pass off with little fanfare, in accordance with his wishes, and I imagine the family will enjoy a private get-together to mark the event. Seeing our monarch and her consort arriving at St Paul's, at 90 and 95 respectively, their stamina, dedication and ceaseless sense of duty, is nothing short of extraordinary. Unusually, a temporary rail was installed to help the couple negotiate the steep steps - a rare sign of their advancing years.

There was an enormous turn out from the immediate and extended members of the royal family with the Daily Express estimating 53 members in attendance.
The youngest was James, Viscount Severn, who is 8. He's the son of the Earl and Countess of Wessex. Below we see Sophie and Lady Louise.

St Paul's Cathedral is one of the most famous and recognisable sights of London, with its dome, framed by the spires of Wren's City churches, dominating the skyline for 300 years. It was an excellent choice of venue for the service.
The service, which was broadcast live on BBC, included a host of high-profile guests including Prime Minister David Cameron and new Mayor of London Sadiq Khan.
The royals were all smiles as they greeted other members of the family. An enormous amount of planning and consideration went into choosing hymns and readings for the service. The opening hymn, 'O Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness', is sung at Epiphany, recalling the Queen’s strong sense of Christian faith and her ‘humble devotion to Christ’. According to St Paul’s a subsequent hymn, 'Lead Us Heavenly Father Lead Us', is set to a German tune, ‘reminding us of the Queen’s ancestry’.

'The service includes three musical ‘birthday gifts’ for the Queen, the first being the anthem, 'I love all beauteous things', written by Judith Weir, Master of the Queen’s Music, which sets a poem by Robert Bridges, Poet Laureate in the year of the monarch’s birth, to music.
Former BBC Young Musician of the Year, Martin James Bartlett, will perform 'Burlesque' by Arnold Bax, who was George VI’s last Master of the King’s Music. The Queen also learnt to play the piano as a child. Prayers will be read by six people, five of whom represent aspects of the Queen’s life and role.
As well as Clare Balding, whose family has trained some of the Queen’s own horses, there will be a member of her household, a trainee barrister representing the law and a member of the armed forces.
Baroness Scotland, Secretary General of the Commonwealth will offer another, while Hilda Price from Cardiff, the widow of an Anglican priest and a leading light in the Mother’s Union, will offer another. Mrs Price was born on the same day as the Queen – 21 April 1926. According to Mrs Price’s daughter, Mary, her mother was given the middle name Alexandra in honour of the Queen – christened Elizabeth Alexandra Mary.'
Much-loved broadcaster Sir David Attenborough, who celebrated his own 90th birthday last month, gave a reading reflecting on passing years from the perspective of one born in 1926. It was written by nonagenarian Michael Bond, who created Paddington Bear.

Whilst the service is very much in honour of the Queen, I thought it a lovely touch to include a prayer for the Duke of Edinburgh:

As a mum myself I asked her about her children and said what a pretty little thing we all thought Princess Charlotte was. She said: 'Oh she is very cute but she has got quite a feisty side. I then asked her about George and she said he was a really lovely little boy. She said she hopes that George will keep Charlotte in order.
Mrs Double said she had no idea the Duchess and other royals would be mingling with guests and it had been a real honour to speak to her. She said: ”It was such a surprise to be introduced to her and she was just lovely - and very, very beautiful. She kept on asking if we had enough to eat - and I told her we hadn't stopped since we arrived! As my husband has been involved in organising the event I really couldn't be prouder. What a fabulous day.”

Harry told guests the Queen "should really be putting her feet up" but wanted to be there for the people. He added the best birthday present she could get would be "a day off so she could lie about and do nothing".
The Duchess wore a bespoke, mist blue, wool crepe coat dress with white lace embellishment all the way down the front by Catherine Walker.
The coat has a very fresh, summery feel to it, and was a perfect choice for the occasion. What Kate Wore and Perth Fashion noted the garment encompasses elements from Rosa and Melrose styles by the designer.

Kate is looking great. Nothing groundbreaking but very classic and regal. The coat reminds me of the coat Carole wore at Charlottes christening. And that is not a bad thing. I don't think it looks matronly, but rather timeless and a very good coat she could pull out in 10 years without looking dated. Like seeing the hat from Charlottes christening. Very pretty and suitibly understated :) She has gotten a good formula going for these events with her hair up, a classic silouette, earrings and a pendant etc. Very nice.
I also have to say Euginie looked great! Appearantly wearing Eponine!

ReplyDeleteMany happy returns to the Duke of Edinburgh. What a joyous occasion it must have been for them both, especially with so many members of royal family attending. That prayer was also touching. And I enjoyed David Attenbourgh's reading very much.
ReplyDeleteOn the fashion note, all of them looked fabolous, there were some hits andd misses as usual. I liked Eugenie's dress,red agrees with her. The Queen was impeccable as usual. Zara's hat was great too.
I didn't care for Kate's coatdress to be honest, as it is very much the same like the grey she wore earlier with lace. I think her shoes did not suit this coatdress very well, and as much as I love updoes, the styling is definitely not my favourite.

I think these nude shoes are her best ones yet. Because they are very close to her skintone and therefore doesn't have to match the clothes. They "are just there" compared to some others that seem beige, hers seem to actually be her nude.

That's funny - we have opposite opinions. I thought Lady Louise looked lovely - a pretty pink swing coat and floral dress was modern and youthful and her hat, hair and make up looked really pretty. I also thought Eugenie won best dressed for the day - that red dress was beautiful! (I agree with you on Beatrice though!) Kate's dress was nice but too old for her in my opinion.

I agree with other commenters that Kate's coat dress was a bit too old for her. She should have stuck with the Melrose...much more interesting!
DeleteI think we need to remember that Lady Louise is a child and being critical really bugs me when it comes to children. Secondly, as a child her parents have the final say in any clothing choices. Especially for occasions like this one. It was a very important occasion and one of her very first times in the public eye. I thought she looked beautiful and carried it off with aplomb. I wouldn't have wanted to be in the public eye at her age. I thought she looked quite wonderful and has poise that is unnatural for someone so young.

DeleteRegarding Lady Louise, I believe Sophie dresses her with the Queen's approval in mind (and not just for formal occasions...important distinction here). Don't get me wrong, I do like to see children dressed like children, but she's at that age where a gentle transition from "girl" to "young lady" would suit her.
This is a beautiful coat worn by a beautiful woman. So why was I underwhelmed? It looks like a coat Camilla would wear, and the color washes out Kate. I much prefer the colors and lace applications of the Rosa and Melrose coats.

It looks like what I do to my hair while I get dressed and put on makeup to give it a bit of bounce. And I was never a fan of this particular hat.

She looks very very pretty but after last night's total win on all points, this ensemble is slightly disappointing. She really shines in brilliant colors but pale patels just wash her out. Also, I think I would have preferred this dress with a straighter skirt, more like the lines of the dove grey McQueen worn for Easter in Australia. However, the length of this CW is perfect.

at the baptism. I think it's today's angle or lack of angle that is leaving me cold. In addition, although I like her hair up, when it is gathered low at the nape of her neck and centered. it tends to look a bit pioneer school marmish. I wish her stylist had more expertise with updos.

Something is off for me and I think it's the hat. I think a cleaner, brimmed hat would have been better, a custom piece made to match the coat dress. (Diana did that to perfection.) This hat is not quite right in my opinion, and makes the entire ensemble fall flat when it could have been just the opposite.

I wonder if it's a case of Kate will probably wear at least 3 hats (maybe 4) this week and is planning on debut something new this week and didn't want to have a new hat for each day. I also always wonder why her hats never match her dresses? This is a petty thing, but a navy hat, red dress, and black shoes. She looked pretty, but just a thought. I know it's not always "in style" to match, but I do like a great ensemble. I suppose that's why I think the Queen always dresses to perfection! As far as Princess Beatrice, oh my goodness. In my opinion, her ensemble was way too loud. It also did not fit properly. A couple pictures I saw of her from the side, the belt was hanging down (one is from the Daily Mail). She is so pretty and has a lovely figure. I think there would have been option for the occasion in my opinion. On a different not, I thought Princess Anne, Sophie, and Zara looked lovely!

ReplyDeleteWow, wow, wow! I love this look and it seems perfect for this sort of occasion. She looks fabulous. I know some harp on the nuede heels, but they make her legs look amazing and miles long. Love that she wore the hair back and love the hat. Sophie, Anne and Zara all look nice too. I do think Eugenie looks good but that dress seems inappropriate for an 11 am church service! A cocktail hour or dinner yes, but it seems so loud and out of place to me. But glad the DM has been nice to her as I do think the York girls get picked on when they don't deserve it. Beatrice's outfit I actually liked too though with her hat it was a bit loud. Also those colors also didn't seem like the best choice for an 11 am church service. In terms of seating, it looks like there were two variations? In one picture Kate is next to Harry but in another he seems on the other side of the room. Catherine Walker´s dresses have always been my absolute favourites - I fondly remember all the "Power Dresses" Princess Diana wore back in the day....

Eve, I agree with you on Catherine Walker's designs. I have always loved them and thought it was a CW outfit as soon as I saw a photo of Kate. (Granted, the green coat Kate wore to the CFS is not at the top of my list.) :)
DeleteAnd to those who wish Kate would dress younger or more trendy, I understand where you're coming from, however, it's Kate's responsibility to dress appropriately. All eyes are on her anyway so I think she is wise to avoid being too fashion forward, especially on occasions such as this.
Camilla and Sophie looked very nice. Eugenie's dress was very flattering, but I wish she had chosen accessories that would have softened the red a bit. Gabriella Windsor achieved it with flying colors (what a classy and stylish young lady).

Gabrilla also wore suede pumps in a nude color! And a matching rubber band around her pony tail. :-). Her red coat dress is lovely. The hat is a bit too ornate and hides her face. Gabriella looks a great deal like her aunt Princess Alexandra, who is always elegant.
DeletePoor Beatrice sometimes looks elegant and sometimes clueless, as she does in this outfit. I like Eugenie's dress but wish it fit a bit better. The senior royals are careful not to overshadow the Queen, thus the pastel colors. Note Camilla, Kate, Sophie, Anne, Birgitte. But Louise in her pretty pink coat seems to have been the only younger royal to follow the code, probably because she sat in the main row and was under Sophie's direction.

They are both such a strong example of love and commitment to so many. To think of what they have seen in their lifetime is astonishing. I find it a bit too "chocolate box" but it suited the occasion perfectly. My husband passed by me as I was reading and made his usual crack about my being Royal obsessed. Tosh on him--occasions like this are what England is about in presenting itself to the world. Leave the drama of Brexit and culture wars to another day.

ReplyDeleteI really like this outfit and am a fan of Catherine Walker. But there was something off to me about the nude clutch and shoes, i dont think they helped pull this together. Lady Louise's outfit seemed to swallow her up, looks like she was swimming in those sleeves, but pleased to see her looking more grown up. Everyone looked happy and relaxed though so that's nice to see.

It seems like the Royal ladies don't ask each other "what color are you wearing?" �� The duchess looked very beautiful indeed in both occasions recently however I'm really tired of seeing her in blue all the time. Yes it's her favorite color one can tell but c'mon does she have to keep repeating the color?
ReplyDeleteThis look is stunning. She looks lovely and the soft color is just beautiful. I especially love the hemline! The only odd thing seems to be the tailoring on the shoulders - it seems too pointed and stiff. I'm not a fan of her tailor, in general, but wonder who actually fitted this particular dress - the designer or Kate's own tailor. All in all, however, she looks spectacular and these photos will probablu become iconic the way some photos of Diana remain more popular than others.
ReplyDeleteKate's whole essemble has me a little bit confused like it it a splash of different colors thrown together. I love the silhouette of the the coat tho and she looks good in it! I wish shs would have worn the Melrose coat, that is one gorgeous coat!

ReplyDeleteCharlotte, I have to ask if you've considered a better/newer method of moderating comments? I assume you approve all comments manually right now, which means it's basically impossible to have a discussion in the comments section since there's often a long delay before a comment goes live. It also means many comments go overlooked by site visitors if they are approved hours or days later while meanwhile everyone has moved on to the next post. I know a better method of comment moderation is possible and I think it would improve the comments section immensely.

DeleteThank you so much for the feedback. In terms of comment moderation there are two options: I manually publish them or they are automatically published without being moderated. Believe me when I say, nobody wants the latter option; the comments section would be a deeply unpleasant place if everything that comes through for moderation went straight to the blog.
I usually try to check comments at least three or four times daily and more often when there's an engagement. I'll try to keep a more regular check. :)

What I wondered if when you are approving if it would be possible to flag new comments within the body of comments quickly say for example by changing the text colour? One doesn't always have time to reread all the comments to continue with a thread and some commentators have very interesting things to say. However I do not in any way want to add to the work load in maintaining the blog. Once again thank you so much for this very informative blog

DeleteWhen you press the comments button, they are shown starting at the bottom. If you read up from there, you will come to the newest comments first in each thread. And there are usually several fresh comments, often on new subjects, down there. Makes it easier to read quickly.
DeleteKate looked lovely today in her Absolutely Beautiful Cathrine Walker Coatdress!:) I'm not one to voice critical opinions about her ensembles, so it feels awkward to even comment on a possible Improvement.:( However, while I loved her hat, when she wore it for Charlotte's Christening...Today it just seemed a bit off? It was as if it wasn't White enough? I also felt it didn't seem to enhance her face & updo, the way it had at The Christening? Does this make sense to anyone else? Her hair was gorgeous!:) The other thing that jumped out to me were her shoes:( I feel so petty, but It seemed to me that this Graceful CoatDress just cried out for a beautiful pair of White Pumps. I just saw a Gorgeous pair of White Patent Leather ones with the same silhouette that would have been Stunning, along with a White Clutch! However, that's just me. I loved the White Eyelet Trim on The CoatDress, as well as The Shade of Demure Blue & The Lovely Scalloping of it's edge! I almost wonder if Kate went with Katherine Walker as a nod to Diana? Odd or me stretching? Looking forward to reading all the comments, & It's good to be back. Still convalescing, but this is Just the distraction that I Need!:)

DeleteThis is another great look for Catherine. I love this neckline on her. It is very flattering and I really like the christening hat with the coatdress. This is one of the few current pieces from Catherine Walker that I really like. It is very regal and elegant. I wonder if this is another jewelry set that we are just now seeing that she has had for quite some time. It looks like the two pieces match quite well.

I just went back to look & the body of the hat is what is jumping out at me, as being more cream this time then at The Christening? The side by side photo of the hat alludes to that, & I don't know what it is, but it doesn't seem to compliment her as it did before? Is it the different updo? Is it how it's sitting on her head this time? I'm baffled. Also, in the Christening photos the hat seems to match the white floral detailing. However, today in many shots, I can see a difference.... The body of the hat is more cream, while the floral detailing is still bright white. I'm interested to read if anyone else picked this up? I feel so awkward critiquing her look, as She is of course as lovely as always.... these few things just hit me as detractions from The Perfection, which was The Kathrine Walker CoatDress! So what do you all think?

ReplyDeleteHmm. now that you say it, there is some similarities. My first thought was G. Collins and sons because it reminds me of a pendant Sophie has. Sophie has a tanzanite pendant which is almost the same as Kate's from G. Collins but with "edgier" diamonds around and this neckalce reminds me of that one!

ReplyDeleteI just love St. Paul's Cathedral. Its beautiful I wish it was used more...and for weddings I feel like the gusts get to see more of the wedding then at Westminster Abby all though its still lovely.

I hate the shoes. Hate. I wish they were a lighter color. I know pointy-toe is the way the trend is going, but I REALLY miss the Sledges!!!!! Dress, hat, and hair were very nice, not overly exciting, but very appropriate for the event.
ReplyDeleteThe Sledges are a lighter, more summery shoe. These have a heavier look although they do match her skin tone perfectly which I think is the draw for her.

DeleteI think that Kate's look today is very pretty. I agree with Rebecca, these are her best nude shoes - they are very pretty and sexy. Many have commented on preferring the Melrose or Rosa but I like Kate's version. And I'd be willing to bet that in person this coat dress is stunning. That lace is quite beautiful and not something that would as well in photos as in person. And the fabric looks like it has a beautiful texture and the zipper in the front makes is younger and modern. I liked Kathryn's comment about Wedgewood china - maybe if it was slightly darker?
ReplyDeleteAt first, I thought the hat was lovely but I can also see the point several - including Becca - have made regarding that the base is "cream". It is a very delicate hat and therefore is fitting but I wonder if the white "saucer-like" hat she worn - last year? - for Trooping would have worked. It might have made the entire outfit a little more modern.
All in all, very pretty especially with the new necklace.
Charlotte, it would be great to see a side-by-side comparison of the various outfits Kate has worn to this event - you often share that in your wonderful posts. Other than the nude lace McQueen there was the peach ensemble she wore while pregnant I believe. Not sure what else. Thanks!
Kate looks lovely as usual. The color of her coat dress is gorgeous, but I don't care for the white decoration down the front. I think she could use a personal stylist, just my opinion. She's still dressing as if she's 60 and not 30 something. Having said that, Kate overall looks stunning. Thanks Charlotte for another fabulous post.

ReplyDeleteThis coat/dress is beautiful and she looks stunning. But I just cannot get past these suede shoes!! The shoes are great, and I'd wear them in a heartbeat don't get me wrong, but with this?? Total miss. I think it would have looked more put together with a cream show that matched the hat and lace. Suede is such a fall material, to me it just doesn't make sense here. But overall she looks great!

This outfit is perfect for this occasion. There have been comments made that the coat dress may be too matronly or old for Catherine. I understand what these people mean, but given the bigger picture and the reason for today's gathering, I believe the outfit is entirely appropriate. It is a timeless piece that could be worn in 2 years time, 5 years time, 15 years time.

The coat is something that would be appropriate for her mother of Camilla. I give up on her with shoes. The most she branches out is from almond toe to pointed it leather to suede. Awful. Even though I don't like the coat, she looks nice. Hat seems a bit off but I love her hair.

ReplyDeleteI like Kate's outfit. Love it? No, but it's far more in the like than dislike column for me. In comparison to the other 'young people' Kate dresses for her role. She's married to the future king, so she's always going to lean towards conservative and reserved, maybe even moreso than her natural tendencies. But since Beatrice and Eugenie are not likely to ever end up on the throne, there's a lot more freedom for fashion. I liked Eugenie's outfit and although I might not pick her choices for myself, I can appreciate them on her. I think I read somewhere she leans towards art, which I feel like is reflected in her choices.

Sophie and Beatrice may be wanted to look traditional for church, but looked much older in their out fits.

I've also wanted to see her in more - and better (thinking of that green coat) - Catherine Walker. Her hair looks perfection too and love the hat. The only quibble I would have is a longing for cream shoes rather than neutral.

This time I think her accessories are all beautiful and spot on, including hat and shoes but I think the dress would suit an older person (thought carole wore similar at the wedding and looked really smart and age-appropriate, this just ages Kate). Think Sophie Wessex as usual looks amazing.

DeleteThe length of the dress and the way she coordinated it passes as a modern and appropriate duchess for the occasion in IMO. Then again, taste and judgement is a combination of other factors, including a personal choice. Millennials vs. generations,X, Y, baby boomers and pre World War II generation. A person may have a taste for a cross section of choice in products from vintage to the present, and still be a young adult, or vice versa. What has an influence on "preference" is most likely peoples experience of their own generation. Well, Kate @15:58 you made me think for a while, including the fact that I remembered to include modern duchess after the post. By coincidence, your post was here when I returned.

I do think most of the "royal" women wear pastel colors knowing that the Queen will be wearing something bright and vibrant. It's more important for HRM to be visible from a distance, especially when standing on the balcony.
ReplyDeleteI think Kate's outfit was pitch perfect. The hat was stunning and so was her hair. I don't know how she walks in those heels. I've tried similar shoes on and can barely stay upright! I bet she can't wait to kick them off when she gets home.
Princess Anne does try, but never quite hits the mark. That hat! Oh my! It looked like a bird crash landed on her head. Anne doesn't seem to care about fashion. And, what was Beatrice thinking? Her dress was not flattering, made her look larger and reminded me of the Queen of Hearts from the Wizard of Oz. Eugenie was a little better, but not much. I think they inherited their mother's sense of fashion which is not meant to be a complement.
Fashion is just small dot on the radar compared to the day's events. The queen and Philip are truly amazing! Watching both of them walk up the steps at St. Paul's unaided is truly remarkable. I know a number of people who are younger who use canes or need help. Long may she reign!!!
Wish I had been as poised at age 12 as Lady Louise appeared to be at this event. She is going to be a stunner!!
