Kate in Jonathan Saunders for Visit to Pippa's West London Home

Candid photos of the Duchess of Cambridge are a rarity these days, but much like with buses you wait an age for one and then several come along at once. Kate was photographed once again leaving Pippa and James Matthews' West London home earlier today. You can view more photos on the Mail Online.

More from the Mail Online:

'The family are gearing up for the much-anticipated wedding of the year.
And the Duchess of Cambridge looked every inch the supportive sister today as she dropped in on bride-to-be Pippa's west London home. Kate, 35, visited her younger sister's house on Thursday just hours after their mother Carole paid a visit alongside milliner Stephen Jones. Dressed casually in a white cable knit jumper, black skinny jeans and £50 Superga pumps, Kate looked keen to slip under the radar as she hid her face behind her phone. '

With the wedding date drawing ever closer (20 May) James and Pippa's £17 million mansion has become a hive of activity with family, friends, milliners and designers reportedly in and out regularly. This hasn't gone unnoticed by photographers who have taken several sets of photos in the past week. Last week William and Kate were pictured arriving for a dinner with Pippa, James, his parents David and Jane and his brother Spencer (who was also photographed arriving at their home today). James Middleton was also there.

Yesterday Carole Middleton was spotted leaving Pippa's home with a man believed to be milliner Stephen Jones OBE, who left with several white bags in hand. Carole wore a pink blazer, navy pants and Jaeger Elizabeth wedges. These snaps are reminiscent of the photos we saw of Kate in the weeks leading up to the royal wedding, which was such a fun and memorable time for royal watchers.

Stephen Jones has been described as one one of the most "important" and radical milliners of our time. His career has been varied and celebrated with his designs gracing the catwalks for everyone from Dior to Vivienne Westwood. The late Diana, Princess of Wales was a regular customer of his. Below, a look at his bridal millinery.

I've always liked Kate's casual style and today she opted to wear well-known pieces for a relaxed look. Kate sported her Jonathan Saunders Deborah Egg-Knit sweater. The Duchess first wore the garment for a visit to the Rugby Stadium during the 2014 Australia/New Zealand tour.

The slim-fitting ribbed sweater has a round neck and long sleeves. The white, aqua and blush sweater is 100% cotton. It was something of a staple then and came in several colours. Kate teamed the sweater with black skinny jeans. Times have certainly changed since then. In December 2015 the designer announced the closure of his label citing "personal reasons". Last May he joined Diane von Furstenburg as the brand's first Chief Creative Officer responsible for the overall creative direction.

Kate's Superga Cotu sneakers are also a familiar pair. The Duchess wore them on the last day of the Canada tour last September.

They are are described as: "The textured contrast sole sets off the low-profile design, and the label and logo-embossed eyelets lend branded appeal." They are currently reduced by 25% to $48.71 at Nordstrom. They are also available at ShopBop.

Several of you have messaged me to enquire about the date of Kate's next engagement. The next date I'm aware of (although not yet officially released by KP) is the London Marathon on 23 April. I imagine we'll hear engagement announcements from the Palace anytime now.

  1. Maybe the wedding is sooner than May 20? Seems as if something might be imminent and Kate doesn't have any engagements announced for the next few weeks.

    1. Erika, I agree, I think the wedding will be sooner. There's definitely a flurry of activity & since the hen party has already taken place, shouldn't the wedding happen not long after?

    2. It does seem like something is happening sooner, doesn't it? The comings and goings remind me of the few days leading up to the royal wedding, not so much the months before (although, I'm sure that did happen).

Maybe some more engagements will pop up. I hope we don't have to wait until May to see Kate again.

    3. I don't have much interest in the Middletons so don't read up on their comings and goings, was it a reputable source for the date of the wedding? (It could be a reputable source who was misled of course!) And I agree with Erika, it would also explain the April hole in Kate's schedule.

    4. I know. It feels like the type of activity that would happen one to two weeks or even days before a wedding. Of course, they could just be having fittings but if the wedding is mid May, I doubt they would be the final fittings. Interesting.

    5. Ooh I hadn't even thought of this, but there does seem to be a lot of activity lately for a wedding in late May. Could the wedding be this Saturday even?! It will be so exciting whenever it is.

I love seeing HRH dressed down. I've always loved her relaxed style.

I agree with Anon 14:18. I don't know whether the wedding will be earlier than expected but I'm certain it won't be until after Easter. Having a wedding during Lent would be unusual and Easter week is very busy for churches.

I wonder too if it is earlier - (and May is said to be a bad luck for marriages - although I would never say that to my parent-in-law who married in May and stayed that way for over sixty years!) You never know.

But I would hope to see more engagements announced soon, and possibly (so nice for the future head of the church)- an appearance of the couple at royal Easter.)

What Pippa does is her private concern, but Kate is a future queen-consort. I know how annoying the paps must be - I'm certain I would hate it myself - but I do think facing the attention with dignity, not hiding behind a mobile like a celebrity of the hour, would be more becoming. Kate doesn't need to smile or acknowledge, just behave as she did before she was married.

    1. Yes, I thought the phone hiding was a little undignified too, Julia. (Seems to be my favorite word lately.) She had sunglasses on so the phone positioning seemed somewhat redundant and dramatic.

      Delete
    2. Absolutely agree with that sentiment, I don't think it's becoming either. I know I sound like a broken record, but they should *expect* to see a photographer every time they step outside, that's not a new occurrence by now. Frankly they should be more shocked if they don't see one!

It will be interesting to see how she/they adjust, they won't be able to put the lockdown on London as they have in Norfolk.

I don't know.... I think the article planted the seed that she was hiding behind her cell phone like some celeb. I interpreted those pics as her fiddling with her hair with the hand that also was holding her phone 😉

      Delete
    4. Rebecca - Sweden6 April 2017 at 22:04

I don't think she's hiding behind the cellphone. To me it looks like she's moving her hand in her hair, as usual. But usuing the "hiding picture" which probably isn't even hiding seems rather DM to illicit a reaction.

      Delete
    5. I don't think she was hiding behind her phone. From the series of shots it looks like she had her phone in her hand and then went to tuck her hair behind her ears.

      Delete
    6. I agree. Definitely do not think she was hiding from the cameras. She was just pushing her hair back and had the phone in that hand. The sequence of photos easily bears that out.

I'm agree with you !!! For me, she doesn't hide behind her phone... I think she touched her hair...

    8. I totally know what you mean Julia. But in this particular instance, I think she is just brushing back her hair.

      Delete
    9. OMG people she is not hiding. A cell phone is not going to hide you. And doesn't she deserve a little private time. She is not on Royal duty. Give her a break

      Delete
    10. I think it's both! I think she deliberately did the hair move right as she left the gate to help block photogs get a clean shot. Come on, anyone reallybthink thatbwasnt her decision!!

    11. If Kate was acting like a "celebrity", she WOULD have posed for photos. I agree with the majority here regarding the phone and hair (a gesture we have seen before and one that has been documented in many posts on this very blog). ;-)

      Delete
    12. Agree she was not hiding...again a snap with a story attributed to a one off. What I found sad is that she clearly had to get quickly form the house to her car with her security hustling her along and worried about her being vulnerable. What an awful way to live. That always bustle of security around one when just moving from spot to spot would be hard. To walk in a park never alone etc etc. I can see the desire for some of those remote castles.

    13. Julia from Leominster7 April 2017 at 18:38

Looking at the photos again, I never see Kate touching her hair or see how she could with the mobile in her hand. She keeps the mobile up right to when she is climbing in the car. (Photo sequence in the Daily Mail.) So I tend to disagree that it is an instantaneous moment when she is adjusting her hair. But perhaps she had a headache.

I've seen actresses behave the same way quite often when they don't feel like posing.

I agree with Ali, it's not the easiest way to live. But there are compensations.

    14. I didn't read the DM article, so just got my impression from the photos on this site and it was on my local news channel believe it or not. She seemed to be shielding her eyes with her phone in the initial photos as she appeared to be holding it against her forehead and not really touching her hair. Then as she walked to the car, she lowered her hand. Funny how we all see the same thing but don't really:) I'd be happy to be completely mistaken though.

Kate is constantly criticized (on the page as well as elsewhere) for fussing with hair, by now we all know if she is slightly uncomfortable/nervous that is her give. So it makes complete sense that stepping out of the door, knowing there will be paps, she would fuss with her hair.
If she really wanted to hide she would have slap a cap on her hair or at least used a magazine/paper/portfolio to shield her face.

    19. She wouldn't have done that to hide because she would know that any purposed gesture like that would be front headline news for days, thus depleting the purpose many times over. I think she was just brushing her hair back while having her phone in hand. I have done that many times.

    2. Me three. :) I'm excited about that and have been since the minute I heard she was engaged, lol. I love weddings. Pippa has worn some really strange outfits in the past in my opinion so I'm hoping this won't be one of those times, although having that avante-garde designer show up at her house didn't give me the warm fuzzies. :)
Although his designs for others might be appealing, as long as he doesn't strike one of those "strange outfit" moods with Pippa for her gown we'll probably be okay. Pippa is cute but no Vogue model. So avante-guarde will only go so far for her, in my opinion. I have noticed that since she became engaged I have liked her outfits more and more. Maybe a healthier clothing budget has helped, maybe she is now shopping higher end stores that have a stylist. In addition to wanting to see her gown, I would love to see inside their 17 million dollar home. The outside looks lovely. I would love to see those new closets. :)

    3. I hope she doesn't go down the strange/avante-garde route either LOL Can't wait to see her dress :) I'm really liking Pippa's style choices of late too, some of her choices in the past have been shockers! I think she's found her groove, fashion-wise. I love her handbags (but not the prices!). I would like to see inside their mansion, it does look nice from the outside.

  8. Given this recent bustle of activity around Pippa's upcoming wedding, I find myself wondering if May 20th is the true date of the wedding. Privacy has been very important to Pippa and her family, regarding any details about the wedding, and it is very possible the actual date is being kept private. If it were me, I wouldn't make the date known. They deserve the privacy during this busy and joyful time.

I'd like to start by saying that of course, I am very saddened by the terrorist attack and subsequent death in Westminster. I'd also like to say that in general, this blog (and I don't mean this as a criticism of Charlotte, but rather all of us as commentators), has been sadly silent about similar frightening attacks when they happen in areas of the world where the majority of the population (and thus victims) are not white. I am so saddened by the horrific chemical weapons attack on innocent victims in Syria earlier this week that left over 70 dead and 100s ill/poisoned. I don't want to bring politics into it, so I won't talk about my opinion of Trump's decision to wage war on Syria. I just wanted to point out that we always say something here when it's victims in France or England for example...but basically never when it's victims of non-white nature, if we're being perfectly honest. This has very little to do with Kate, except that I didn't have a chance to comment on the post about the Westminster attack memorial and I didn't want to comment on that post now because I didn't think anyone would see it then.
Anyways, I did think Kate looked quite appropriate for the service. I agree with both those who commented on that post saying that she could stand to look more professional during engagements (when even Princess Anne wears pantsuits but not someone several decades younger...), but I also agree with those who said that it would have been odd if Kate chose a memorial service at a major religious/historic location to do so.

We all have expressed sympathy for what happened at Westminster and in Russia and now Sweden, and of course those poor people in Syria who were hit by gas as well as attacks elsewhere - India, Africa, Afghanistan and the Middle East have been mentioned here in the past. It's all awful no matter where, and I'm certain it's on all our minds but this blog is not really the place for politics - just for caring and talking about Kate.

I did read a dog stopped an attack in Nigeria which was good news for a change.

      Delete
    2. I am not sure I completely agree. What happened in Syria is terrible and I can see what you mean, but I feel like in general people comment about attacks that W/K respond to( expressions of sympathy, etc) or are in locations that are connected to people on the blog that we know live in that country/area. I also second everything Julia said above.

Now W/K responding to only certain terrorist attacks is a completely different discussion....

    3. I do not think most people react due to skin color but simply what is closest to them geographically. On blogs we react to those we have a kinship to. So I suspect very few of us pay much attention to what is happening in Uganda, but not for any racial reason, but because the press, or our personal go to media spots do not report. The internet with all its access is both wonderfully liberating but also very limiting. We tend to go to our comfort sites on our computers, so see the same stuff over and over. In the past you often were exposed to a variety of issues on your daily newspaper which had to appeal to a variety of interests/views. While you might not have read in depth the alternative stuff, you at least saw the headline. Also many of us European or North/South Americans do not report on huge issues in Asia/India. There are atrocities happening worldwide, both by others invading, their own government, or their own local group. It is hard. I am so sad with it all, but as many have said, try and hold onto and support all those wonderful healthy people in the world.

  14. These pics are a real treat. I was also wondering about the lack of engagements announced for April but it looks like Pippa's wedding could be happening any day with all this activity.

I know that this may sound really silly but somehow I never actually pictured Kate having a phone. I sort of imagined that her messages are received via telegram lol! Seeing her walking with her phone in her hand is sooo unusual, no bag, sunglasses on, comfy clothes... it's just so "normal" and surprising. I guess it's one thing to see celebrities like this but not Kate. Don't ask me why, I'm battling to explain my surprise to myself lol :)

All the best to Pippa and her fiance' on their upcoming wedding! (Whenever it will be) I wish them a lifetime of happiness and prosperity. Cheers! :)

  16. Hi Charlotte,

Thank you for all your posts. They are always interesting and well presented

Off this topic but on the mental health topic, I see Jamie Oliver is tweeting support for the Heads Together initiative, especially the films. Big achievement that for the foundation - Jamie has such a massive world wide audience and different audience one would think from the audience the Royals achieve. I suspect the support has gone out on all Jamie's social media but I have not checked. The ripple effect is increasing. Perhaps one day it will be ok to have mental health disease just as it is ok to be a diabetic, neither a pleasant situation but one socially acceptable and sadly in many instances the other not. For me this acceptance is what Heads Together needs to achieve. Once that is achieved a lot of what is discussed on the blog regarding services will follow.

It looks as if she was being hustled quickly into her car. We don't know what kind of threats they may have received. I don't really think the phone is meant to hide Kate's face, but there does seem to be a need to hurry. Nevertheless, Kate was smiling and appeared to be talking to her protectors.

    2. I'm a bit sad she's closing her lifestyle blog...but I do hope it means that things are moving along for her & Harry :)

      Delete
    3. That is very significant that "The Tig" is history already. Can't think of anything other than consideration of her relationship with Harry that would predicate closing "The Tig", can you? That, in conjunction with the reports of new accommodations for Harry at Kensington Palace
and reports of Meghan not doing "Suits" any longer might make one think that their relationship is getting stronger. Hmmm.

      Delete
    4. Some of thoughts on this ...

First, am I the only one thinking it would be a mighty quick engagement given the distance, overall time frame, and Harry's dating history?

Frankly, I can think of different reasons for her to shut down the blog.

And finally, why would a modern gal do this to accommodate a royal romance? And, IF this is true, OHHHH the irony!

      Delete
    5. I agree, royal fan. :)

Although, if they want children, that might be a consideration for expediting things a little (in their minds, anyway). Harry, although I think he looked disinterested in Jamaica, did make that public statement, so that is dissimilar to his other relationships. And, he, did have Meghan stay at the palace for a rather lengthy stay or two. That was different as far as we know. Just some thoughts. Don't know where they stand relationship-wise since Jamaica though. All these may be moot points, given Jamaica, or maybe not.

What other reasons did you come up with for Meghan closing "The Tig"? That was definitely a viable link for her to introduce many influential people into her life. Given that, I couldn't think of any reason for closing that blog site other than newly found discretion prompted by dating a "Royal". And, you are right, that would seem ironic coming from a promoter of women's/human rights and liberties. What are your other thoughts on that, if any? :)

      Delete
    6. It would be a relatively fast engagement, but that's not all that unusual. Many people are engaged within a year of meeting, sometimes less! And, I speak from experience, the older you are the faster you can make that decision. By your mid-30's not only do you know what you're looking for in a partner, you absolutely know what you're NOT looking for ;) When you know, you know, it's as simple as that! Two of her close friends have given interviews on the record recently and say they just fit, there's a tremendous ease to their relationship. After the first few weeks with my husband I felt I had known him all my life, American and all ;) I never imagined I could have relocated before that.

The blog closing makes perfect sense, no one has been able to have a private profession and marry a royal, it's a disaster in the making. And frankly I don't think she'll want it anymore, she and Harry in my estimation are going to take off like a house on fire and dive headfirst into many charitable projects. She has said in past interviews that the best thing about the fame that goes with being an actress was the attention she could bring to her pet charities.

When I first heard about her and saw that awful Hollywood agent publicity photo I thought, oh this is a summer fling for Harry! But as soon as I read the second paragraph (why it pays not to go by headlines!) I knew this was probably very different. I didn't read anything into the Jamaica photos, Harry could have been hungover! But it was also likely he wasn't happy about the more intimate pics that had been snapped, think of how William was positively fuming publicly on that tour day when news of the topless Kate pics came out.

And remember, as George and Charlotte grow Harry and his family will fade into the background a bit, one of the hard facts of royal life. How many people care about Andrew except when he's misbehaving?

      Delete
    7. Wise words as always, Claudia. I agree with many of your points. I am not sure about Harry's star fading, not as long as he is more popular and does more in people's eye than his brother.

Meghan, the modern gal, has done more for women than some, actress or not. I think it is a good idea that she is shutting down Tig, probably because of her royal connection or future. Wise decision, it wouldn't sit well with people if she cashed in, using connections, getting jobs etc. We don't have to go far to find examples of all that.

She shut down a blog - which had lately accumulated many hateful, racist and sick comments throughout from terrible people. Gee, wonder if that had anything to do with it.

You are trying to "innocently" point out the alleged irony because Kate is well known and well criticized for hardly working the ten years she made herself at William's beck and call despite him leaving her multiple times, trying to date other people, being unfaithful (well-documented by high society people who spoke out about as well as established royal reporters).

To me Kate gets a ton of criticism for being available for william. I don't think that's fair when it looks like meghan is doing the same thing. Double standards I see.

Closing down The Tig is one of the things on my list of things that must happen before an engagement, but there are still a few to go. (Although if it happens I think it will be sooner than people expect)
The Tig is a big part of her brand as a celeb so closing it is a big move and both Harry and Meghan knew that it would increase speculation.
If it was just taking up too much time she could have employed somebody to manage it. If it was because the media was making something out of everything she wrote she could have just published less and less. And if it was about comments, well that can also be managed.
No I think this is the first step.

    14. Meghan Markle has been seeing Harry for less than a year. She still has her job; she hasn't quit it although I bet she does after this season. "Pretty much a part time actress" -- interesting; having a supporting role in a series of 7 years duration doesn't count? But, let's say just for argument's sake, that she is just a part time actress. What does she do in her spare time? Well, she's undertaken trips for charitable purposes, and she's also written articles for magazines talking about women's and racial issues. Up until last week, she had a lifestyle blog too. Hardly the same thing as "being available for William". Kate didn't do *anything* except be available for William. She couldn't even hold down a part time job because she had to be available for William. And even her own sister wasn't aware what Kate did at Party Pieces. Good luck finding that interview now; I think it's been scrubbed.

But yes, I do agree Meghan is making time for Harry. Just as he is making time for her. Which seems a bit more of a two way street than Kate's story.

    16. So I did a bit of looking into Meghan, and I have to say that I liked what I saw. She seems to have, what Julia has said, hustle. At the same time she seems quite media-savvy - perhaps a bit too much. I confess that I am a bit suspicious of that.

I don't think that it is fair to compare her to Kate. She has a long resume compared to Kate. Much of which is rather impressive. Her charitable work seems to be serious - not just ticking boxes. She seems to be quite confident and articulate. Speaks very very well. And she is Kate's age.

I like Kate but I did not think that her choice not to work was the right one. I understood why she did it, but if I were her mother I would have had many many fits about it. And I would have cut her off - I would not have had a London pad so that she would be available for William. I understand that some people believe that Kate is held to a higher standard than Meghan is. But I have to say that I disagree. I am a feminist and strongly believe that all women need to choose what is right for their lives. Whether to work or be a stay at home mom. At the same time if my 24 year old graduate daughter chooses to sit around waiting for her boyfriend to propose - I am sorry, but I would not be happy with that. If the same daughter, at 35, after a successful career, some recognition and a divorce finally finds a love that she deems to be worthy and wants to move across the Atlantic for, or give up her career for - I would totally support her. Choosing to take a backseat in life for a man is fine when you have options. Kate *did not* have options at 24. She refused to give herself any. Or rather, maybe William did. She chose to take the one path that would guarantee that she would never ever have options. She was guaranteed to be William's doll. That's all. No identity beyond that. She cut off her own wings before she could fly. And as a woman who first and foremost is very independent, that just sounds off many alarm bells for me. That, is think, is foolish and I would never ever encourage any daughter of mine to take that path, even for the King of England.
Suppose William had never proposed . What pray would be Kate's path after that? Maybe she would have been fine because she had her family business to fall back on, but maybe she would not have. It is just not smart or fair to herself. No man should ask you to strip your life of options, and you should never volunteer that for a man no matter how much you love that man - I believe that.
Meghan created many options for herself between the ages 24 and 35. Even if the relationship with Harry does not work out, in all likelihood she will be able to draw upon her education, her network, to be able to gain a decent livelihood and have the career/life she wanted.
There is nothing anti- or pro-feminist about my views. They are predicated entirely on practical considerations. Even though I am, of course, a strong feminist.

    17. Stephanie, with all due respect, when did I suggest that Meghan "completely quit her job/jobs to just follow Harry around"?

I asked, "...why would a modern gal do this [referring to shutting down her blog] to accommodate a royal romance? And, IF this is true, OHHHH the irony!"

It was a clear reference to shutting down her blog and nothing more...followed by an "IF" for emphasis because we all are speculating here unless/until an engagement is actually announced. And yes, I *did* make a reference to the overall timeframe so there's no conflict here, dear. I promise. :-)

As far as irony goes, it most certainly is alive and well; Kate received a lot of criticism for making personal choices that suited her (and, apparently, she continues to receive it). Meanwhile, Meghan is being applauded and cheered on for making what MAY BE the first of many she will make for similar reasons. (Her life, her choice, correct?)

It's also worth noting that Kate met her prince in university, while Meghan met Harry 15+ years later. Therefore, talking about what Meghan has done to date and what Kate "didn't do" is irrelevant here, other than to further undermine Kate.

I have been honest about my concerns with Meghan, but at the core they are based on HARRY'S long term happiness. I want him to have a partner that will be in his corner, and for all the right reasons, now and forever. I'm not so sure that the same concerns are at the core of the criticism Kate receives...

      Delete
    18. SG, very good point about children; that *would* expedite things at this point! ;-)

As far as other possible reasons for shutting the blog down, well, she did put herself out there quite a bit and *IF* (again, caps for emphasis) things are not going her way, it would be quite understandable if she wanted to pull back and not be as exposed and vulnerable as she has been through social media. In other words, the more you share, the more there is to explain if things don't work out. Just another possibility, but again it's all speculation, isn't it? ;-)

    19. Claudia, I do understand that some people just click and a relationship ends up on the fast track. Been there, doing that, and I feel very blessed for it! :-)

However, there is a huge difference between Mr. & Mrs. Anonymous doing it vs. the reality of someone marrying into the Firm and adapting to a whole other lifestyle, with all the quirks and restrictions one could never begin to imagine. Just consider the success of some royal marriages. And this would be an American young lady which could add more difficulties to the scenario.

And to add to that - Kate was apparently doing photography for the Party Pieces website and catalogue. yet, it was always someone else's name credited for each and every photo there.

Also, she was constantly photographed falling out of clubs, but we have, I think, exactly three photos of her arriving at and leaving her parents' work site. Amazing that. I do believe one of the reasons given for not getting a full-time job elsewhere was the allegation the paparazzi would harrass her there and the workplace in general.

You aren't being mean Anon 20:53, I just have many reasons for my opinion which simply contradicts yours is all.

    23. I have absolutely no intention of comparing the two. Other posters here were doing that. I personally find her quite different than Kate. I hope that the reality lives up to the hype. If it doesn't I will probably do a big eyeroll and think it figures.

And now that Charlotte has a new blog about her I'm happy to confine my comments to that one.

    24. The comparisons of the two gals are inevitable. There is a pretty sharp contrast I see, and it seems like others see it too. As my favourite person :-) put it, some people might be afraid that Meghan leaves someone in the dust. How true!

There is no irony or double standard here. Nobody blames Kate for being a stay at home mum, or condemns her for it. But she is not an ordinary wife, or a wife from the fifties. She is not only married a man but a job too. I think I read this a lot from wiser women here many times. She chose not to fulfil herself when she had the opportunity, she was a beck and call, now, when she has a platform, she seems to be eager one day then disappears for 2 weeks. Giving us enough time to jump on each other's throats:-D

Many interesting comments here - I will give mine.
I do very much admire Meghan for being a self-made woman. This is not to I have't had concerns about how fast this romance has been pushed and whether Meghan has been using the publicity too much - it is an extremely delicate balance. (And made Harry's statement seem a bit hypocritical -- one is pushing for attention when the other is criticising it - the Mac cartoon summed it up perfectly.) But I'm also mindful Kate used publicity too when her romance with William had a break - there was no brushing her hair with her mobile at that point.
But closing down the blog is clearly a sensible thing to do - as far as we know, Meghan is still working and I trust she will continue to do so - Harry has had longer romances that failed and his former girlfriends have had to fend for themselves - Cressida back to acting while Chelsy seems to be designing jewellery.
In my opinion Meghan is positioning herself to be like Amal Clooney (who has more professional credentials) or perhaps Angelina Jolie. How this will fit in with the royal family will be interesting. I think there is a potential for it to work with a second son -one who sees himself carrying on the torch from his mother.
So the things that have concerned me has been the activities of Meghan's family (although it's not clear how much control she has over that) the coy remarks on the blog (although that's hopefully in the past) and the speed of the romance - at least as it's been interpreted. The most recent formula for royal romances have been to proceed very slowly - and I think a certain slowing down would be valuable here.

But what I do very much like about Meghan is that she has had to build herself up and that she does seem to have strong and genuine charitable interests - some of which would be unusual for a princess but whose importance can't be denied. This might be something that would work extremely well for the wife of a second son. And if the marriage doesn't happen, Meghan is still building herself up as a force - so I would never say she is waiting on Harry - she strikes me as a woman who is looking to the future - whether Harry is part of that or not. (And I love her interesting in cooking and her love for her dog.)
I'm not sure whether I was ready for a blog about her (or would have been about Kate before marriage) but I admire Charlotte getting in the door early and know anything she does will be brilliant (and still miss the Royal Digest - sob - which was wonderful - hope it might return someday as there is nothing else out there like it and I feel interest in European royals are growing.) So I will follow it.

    27. Yes, Caroline, it is a pity because no one here has said anything as negative about Meghan as what continues to be repeated about Kate. Perhaps the new blog will be a better option for people if Kate isn't someone they can respect.

I did not interpret Kate's actions - phone up beside her head - as "hiding" from the paps. It's a photo of a split second while she is brushing her hair back with her hand - probably an act of self-consciousness at noticing the cameras (something I do when I realize I'm being watched or that someone is looking at me; it's instinctive...a need to be doing something with one's hands).

I do like the sweater and the Supergas, I have a pair of my own. However I don't know if I'd really call her ensemble a "style" - she is dressed like I do every day of every weekend in the cooler months....sweater, skinny
or slender cut jeans, casual/sport shoes. Or, maybe I am more stylish than I realize!

Second half of my comments As for Kate I was very concerned before the marriage that she seemed to be positioning herself as William's playmate (and agree with Rosman - too much parental support - possibly a problem for all the Middleton children none of whom have shown much ability to stand on their own feet without support or hanging on their sister's fame.) But I was prepared to be open and see what happened after the engagement - waiting to find out what Kate was truly passionate about. I was a little concerned in the engagement interview that she seemed at almost thirty to have few ideas.

Unfortunately - we haven't found much of that. She seems to have no interest in causes independent of William. This alone might not be a problem if she was a hard worker - but she isn't. I still hold being a royal princess is a job - and that the choice of being a full-time stay-at-home mum isn't part of that. That doesn't mean that option isn't available for some women (although again I agree with Rosman all women should be able to support themselves - because they may need to) But whether a woman works because she needs the money - or because she marries a man who comes with a job - she has made a decision.
I have been very worried about these repeated comments of (being looked after, being taken care of.) If something happened down the road - I could not see Kate being a regent to an underage George. And I do find her terribly retro - not very interesting outside of her looks and her clothes. Which is an irony because that's not what she wants us to be interested in - but offers little else.)
So Meghan might end up filling a need - the next Raina which I think the British royal family could use and people would admire. It is again an irony that both her parents and the royal family have overprotected Kate - the latter thinking they were avoiding another Diana - but ending up with a different problem - which is so often the case. But I still think Kate could do more - if she just would - and is more frightened of the royal family than she should be - Meghan may show that up - I don't think she is frightened of anyone. So I'm rooting for them both and can see a balance between a more traditional (but much more active) role for Kate and Meghan being the dynamite. It could be an interesting balance. (And Claudia - I believe second sons can be interesting - Andrew isn't because he has no wife and there have been so many disappointments about his conduct.)

      Delete
    2. 'And I do find her terribly retro - not very interesting outside of her looks and her clothes'; I completely agree with you, Julia. But I suppose that this is enough for the public/media to be fascinated with her. She's viewed as a 'dress-up' doll, though this sounds very blunt & unkind. Perhaps this is what everybody wants, a 'perfect icon', and not a 'flawed' individual like Fergie. We still don't know much about Kate. We are not given the opportunity.

They are heinous, senseless, and abominable. How someone can want to harm others in such despicable and brutal ways is impossible for me to understand. Even though all who have been injured or killed in Stockholm, Syria, the UK, (and all countries where these attacks have occurred) are in my thoughts and prayers, that just doesn't feel like enough to me right now. As a minister, prayer is very important to me and I know how powerful, comforting, and healing it can be. But I also know that prayer can sometimes leave us with more questions and uncertainty than resolution. I am a fixer by nature and when people are hurting or being treated inhumanely, I want to help them. Sometimes thoughts and prayers don't feel like they are enough.

Sadly, bad or horrible news tend to make headlines and are reported about in detail - not the good news. Reading about such cruelty, hatred and violence as we've witnessed recently, one would really become paralysed, depressed and start to think humankind is on the way to a black pit. It may seem only bad things are happening, there are more evil people everywhere than good people... However, this is not true: there are lots and lots of good, caring, compassionate, hard-working people who take care of their families, help their neighbours, share good things with their friends (and sometimes also with strangers) - simply, who try to live good lives. There are far more of these people than of violent madmen. I try to remember this every day so as not to lose hope and joy without which life would seem unbearable.

    3. Rebecca, I understand precisely what you are saying, and I too am afraid that globally we are becoming desensitized to these attacks. They happen with such frequency that collectively they become overwhelming for us to try and process as well. Darkness may not overcome light, but there is still too much darkness in this world. Sometimes it feels like there are only pockets of light, and we have to squint to see any good in the midst of so much evil. Where we find some light is in the Good Samaritans that rush to help, comfort, and support those who are hurting. We have to keep looking for the helpers in the midst of so much turmoil and tragedy, and offer help ourselves in whatever capacity that might be.

    4. I am so glad that you and your family are safe, Rebecca. And I am so sorry that Sweden and its citizens have to deal with this trauma, as I am horrified, overwhelmed, and saddened about Sweden and all other countries where acts of terrorism have been committed having to find ways to come to terms and move forward.

I especially agree with your wisdom, Zora, in reminding us to think about all the unseen/unpublicized acts of goodness and kindness happening everywhere all the time. Your comment reminds me of the ending of George Eliot's Middlemarch, where she is referring to Dorothea's life:

"But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been, is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs."

Reading that quotation always lifts my spirits and renews my faith in the world. So thank you, Zora, for reminding me of it. I think it is a choice that we must make to try to think this way as much as possible in life, especially the world right now.

  26. Rebecca, I had a long post earlier in this thread, that I just posted, dealing with what you are saying. I am so sorry you and your lovely country were hit with this. I too hope for peace, understanding, strength, and resolve to deal with some to the awfulness that is being unleashed.

  27. Sarah from US, I think that you can do something to heal the madness that is keeping our world: start your blog on mental health. There is a kind of overspread insanity all over the world, a lack of mental health which is blurring the boundaries between good and evil. I am sure that mental health is the main target for a general improvement of human relationships, for peace and happiness against hostility, aggressiveness and despair. Reading your words I see a deep cleverness, an acumen without prejudice, all qualities that can help you to be helpful for a lot of people.

  28. I keep going back to the fact that if we stop living our lives as normal, then the terrorists have won. We are vacationing in Palma right now and the streets are filled with tourists. Am I aware of what could happen? Of course. Do I think that maybe I see more police out and about the past few days than before? Yes I think so. Do I pray for my family (the human family as I believe we are all God's children) spread across the world? Absolutely.

  31. Hello everyone,

I hope you all had a lovely weekend!

After much consideration, I've decided to write a blog on Meghan Markle. Obviously Meghan and Harry are not engaged (and so it may be a short lived project) but I've really enjoyed following her journey so far and hope it will be an enjoyable space for those interested.

  32. Whoa. (WHAT? Are you out of your mind???) lol

Just kidding. Seriously, that is a total surprise and a very pleasant one. I do not know where or how you will find the time, Ms. Charlotte, but a second blog will be exciting. If Meghan only knew, truly. She would be uber honored no doubt. :) She loses "The Tig" but gains a "Ms. Charlotte Blog". Much better. :)
I think it is more than 50/50 that she and Harry are going to give it a go. They have been together again since Jamaica and she did close her blogsite so that adds up. (uh, you are still going to continue this blog, aren't you? Pleeease say yes.) Great idea Charlotte.
    How fun. 🎉

Random, mildly off topic wondering. (And not nagging or such at all, genuinely curious)

Do you have any plans on continuing Kate Loves? Either some new topics or version 2's of previous Kate Loves. You always do such great research and they are at times my favourite posts.

I understand that you might not have time, and especially nowdays when the Cambridges have upped their numbers (less time to fill on the blog). But was just looking through the archive and remembered how great those posts are :)

  38. Why is Kensington Palace releasing PR Statements on behalf of Pippa and James Mathews who are private citizens? And they complain about privacy after this. Strange blurring of lines and pretty inappropriate.

    1. I find myself curious about that as well. There have been several occasions in the past when KP said they were not going to provide official statements regarding members of Kate's family (specifically Pippa). I wonder if the decision to provide an official statement on Pippa's wedding was to do simply that...offer official confirmation on a few details in order to reduce the amount of media speculation being made about everything from the dress designer to the "banned guests."
And perhaps, because senior members of the royal family are involved in or attending the wedding, KP decided to provide official confirmation of the date, George and Charlotte's involvement, and that it would be attended by William, Kate, and Harry. They did not provide a time for the ceremony, and I think that was a good idea.

    2. Sarah Maryland USA10 April 2017 at 20:29

Some of the reporters on twitter think it is another example of KP trying to stage manage them and i hear they are only allowing certain photographers to show up to the wedding which btw according to a justice ruling a wedding is not considered a private event
I say to all the media go and take as many photos and video as you want!
Plus I swear if they try to sneak in George and Charlotte in a back way I will lose my mind because I want to see them in their adorable outfits!

    4. Sarah @21:29, considering the significance of a wedding and all that people invest (both financially and emotionally) in their special day, I find it extraordinary that you would find more sympathy for photographers who want to cash in on Pippa's wedding than you do for the couple exchanging vows.

  39. I am curious about people's thoughts in reference to a mention (I think yours, Julia) about the Queen's choice not to step aside so that Charles (or William for that matter, but that is another question) do not have to wait an egregiously long period of time to assume a role as King. I understand completely, as suggested, that the mere idea of abdication, even in completely different circumstances, is probably horrifying to the Queen. And I think her dedication at her age is a profound inspiration. But in the Queen's commitment (perhaps too rigidly executed?) to avoid mistakes of the past, does she not perhaps risk creating larger problems in the future than might otherwise exist? For example, might not the transition be eased if Charles assumed role as King while the Queen was able to still carry out duties in a Queen Mother-type role, so that whatever the reaction to Charles' adjusting to his role could be smoothed somewhat by the Queen still being an active presence and a force? I don't want to offend anyone be making heretical-type comments, but I feel almost like the Queen would be doing her duty best and serving the monarchy best if she allowed Charles to become King while she could still play an active role in a Queen Mother-type position--not sure what the exact title would be. Does anyone have thoughts about this?

    1. Christen, it *might* be a smoother transition for *Charles* if done while the Queen is alive, but I do not believe it will ever happen. (And the thought of Camilla becoming Queen any sooner is an added pebble in the shoe!)

I can only imagine the conversations that the Queen was privy to as a child when her Uncle and his "choices" were being discussed in the privacy of their own home. Never mind the QM's passionate hatred of Edward and Wallis that lasted (I believe) until her last breath.

While there may be advantages to such a scenario, I don't see it happening. And keep in mind that Charles and Camilla don't exactly represent a breath of fresh air; they are rather Edwardian, to say the least. On the other hand, if Charles was happily married to Diana, the Queen could have retired 20 years ago to a worry free life at Balmoral.

    2. Thanks for your thoughts, royalfan. What you say makes complete sense, I think you're right. Even now, I imagine it can't always be easy for the Queen, because things are complicated. As you say, it would have been *so* much easier (in an alternative universe!) if Charles and Diana were happily married.

    3. Maggie - Minneapolis12 April 2017 at 04:11

I kind of think the BRF would benefit if the Queen had chosen to step down, but only if it happened earlier and not now. The reason I think so is that it is quite possible that Charles could sadly pass away soon into any reign of his that begins after the passage of his own mother. Having a short reign for Charles followed by yet another transition seems like a lot of turmoil, and could hinder the Cambridges' ability to properly handle the workload of being King and Queen Consort due to not having very long to transition into it while Prince and Princess of Wales. However I imagine that William would not be happy if the Queen abdicated and he became the Prince of Wales with such a young family.
Royalfan is obviously right that the public wouldn't be exactly thrilled about their beloved queen stepping down and thus elongating any reign of Charles. But I would disagree with royalfan's description of him as Edwardian - while obviously Charles and Camilla are personally an older generation with old-fashioned tendencies, I actually think that if Charles wasn't so unpopular because of his troubles with Diana, and if he wasn't following the act of the longest reigning monarch of all time, he could have been seen as that breath of fresh air. I know the monarch is supposed to stay divorced from many issues, especially of political nature, and as a woman it would have been even harder for Queen Elizabeth to ever try and express her opinion more. However, it's the 21st century and I don't know....I'm sure those who are much more well-read than me will be horrified by this and perhaps rightly so, but I would find it old-fashioned if monarchs continued to be so tight-lipped and well...more inconsequential than they need to be imo. I like that Charles cares so deeply about a great deal of issues and isn't afraid to say so. I know it can risk controversy, but so does anything that's in the direction of change. William actually seems more Edwardian in that regard - I'm not sure if he just doesn't care about certain issues or is just better at being controlled in his public opinions, but obviously one of the reasons William is easier to send places like China is because he would never criticize them about Tibet, for example. But that also disappoints me and makes me bored imagining what his reign would look like. But perhaps it's because I think I also admire Queen Elizabeth's reign a little less than some others on this blog (*ducks and hides* :P). She's shown remarkable resiliency (although it's easier to do so when your position in life is guaranteed by birth and lots of money), but it makes me sad that she seems to have actually spoken up for so little in terms of saying things even slightly controversial (and important) and such.

  40. I think it hinges solely on the speech she made when she was 21. She promised to stay faithful to her position as long as she lives.
