The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge joined the Queen and members of the Royal family for Easter Service at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.
In our last post, we discussed how the Cambridges have spent every Easter since their engagement. In 2012 they joined Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall at Balmoral - attending a church service at Crathie Kirk. In 2013, they spent it in Anglesey, where William was working as a search and rescue pilot, and in 2014 William and Kate were in Australia with Prince George. Aside from those occasions, they have enjoyed the day privately with the Middletons in Bucklebury. I would say it's quite significant they joined the Queen today and with a move to London on the cards later this summer, it may signal a new tradition where they alternate between both families.

The Duke and Duchess made the way down the hill for the service.
Other members of the Royal family present included The Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Anne and her husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence, Peter Philips and his wife Autumn, the Wessexes and the Yorks.

Well-wishers waited outside for the royals to arrive and clapped as the Queen entered the church through the Galilee Porch.
Her Majesty looked resplendent.
The Duchess curtsied as the Queen made her way inside. Majesty Magazine's royal editor Joe Little told People: "It is rare, but it indicates that this was the first time that the Duchess saw the Queen. It would normally happen in private. It’s unusual to see it in public but not unique. That would have been the first communication between them on that day."
St George's Chapel, a 14th century building located in the Lower Ward of the castle. The chapel has been the site of many royal weddings in recent years, with the Earl and Countess of Wessex's in 1999, and the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall receiving a blessing there after their wedding in 2005. The chapel is also home to the Order of the Garter, the annual June ceremony.

The new college at Windsor was attached to the Chapel of St Edward the Confessor which had been constructed by Henry III in the early thirteenth century. The chapel was then rededicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, St Edward the Confessor and St George the Martyr. Edward III also built the Aerary Porch in 1353–1354. It was used as the entrance to the new college.

Kate wore her lovely cream bespoke Catherine Walker coat.
The Duchess first publicly wore it when the Cambridges left Canada in September completing their week-long tour. The elegant piece features a princess silhouette and front flap pockets.
Kate teamed the coat with a new cream pillbox hat with a signature bow and an updo.
Kate accessorised with Her Majesty's diamond and pearl earrings.
Kate carried a new clutch today.

ReplyDeleteI don't think they need to go every year. (And I'm also one of those who feel a bit icky over them having to SHOW that they go to church. To me, faith is a very personal and private thing and I think calls for them to "show of" that they are "good, church going folks" just rubs me the wrong way). But it was very nice to see them there.
Kate looks absolutley wonderful. I adore pillboxes (as you might know by now) so her adding more of them makes me very happy! And a great reuse of the coat! A very pretty but also neutral and not very focus pulling look. Perfect.
I had a hunch when she wore the coat the first time that it had the potential to become a regular feature in her wardrobe. It's classic and neutral enough for that while still being very pretty.
There is something a little unbalanced with the hat and hair. Maybe the hat is a smidge to large to fit with that hair? Or is the hat a bit... square? Either way, small quibble. (Seeing the closer picture from behind, I think it being square is a bit the issue.And don't like the fabric of it)
I'm glad to see that these earrings are now in her regular rotation :) They are very classic and versitle, and the Queens. Couldn't be better!

We are "not to forsake the assembling together of ourselves with fellow believers." And with William going to be the future head of the Church of England I think regular church attendance is very important and it strengthens people's faith all around the world in this day and age where not so good things have been happening. We are not supposed to hide our light under a basket but strengthen and encourage one another as we see The Day approaching. Just some encouragement. :)
DeleteI am with you about the hat, Rebecca. Maybe if it had had a better shape and fit and more color somehow. I love pillbox hats but this one is a little off. The coat is perfect, in style, fit and fabric. It looks like she might not have been wearing hosiery. I think that if she had it would look more polished. The rapport between she and William was visible in some photos so that's always encouraging. Eugenie, Beatrice and Autumn seemed all smiles this morning. Maybe because they were at the front of the line today. :) I liked Autumn's coat. As usual, not a fan of what Eugenie and Beatrice were wearing. Love Anne, did not like her hat. Just to be fair, yes, I am that critical and picky about the outfits I wear. :)

I tend to agree with you, Rebecca, about faith being a personal, private thing. However, that said, I think there is also a great strength that the church can offer communities and nations in terms of highlighting the importance of good will, compassion, tolerance, forgiveness, and more general virtues that are not about faith per se. In other words, I think church attendance can support a wide range in terms of what people's private beliefs about God are. So I see it as more of a social solidarity thing, or something like that. Solidarity is not quite the right word here, but I hope the gist is clear.
DeleteI agree. But as Charlotte wrote in her last post, it's not like they haven't been in church for easter. Just not at the super photographed part. I know that the queen is the head of the church so it gets a more of a "work vibe" for them to go to church (another thing I'm not very comfortable with AND highly doubt will still exist when William is king. This is probably because church and state are separate in Sweden).
DeleteChurch attendance is good for faith, absolutley. I'm not saying it isn't. Just that lack of church attendance is not lack of faith nor is it lack of support in your faith. I think there's a reason that the royals have both a public and a private service at christmas. The walk and such is a dog and pony-show, while the other one is an actual faith experience. If that makes sense. And to me, the windsor easter church event feels like a "dog and pony-show light" compared to them just popping in to Angsley or Berskshire village churches. Does that make sense?
To clarify, I don't think it's bad that they went today. The opposite. What I don't like is the insistance on them being SHOWN practicing their faith. Because outward appearances are deceitful and doesn't speak to inward faith. So go and parade to church as much as they want, it's good for the PR and to show family solidarity. But I don't see it as much of "show of faith"-thing, personally!
I am not a fan of pillbox hats in general. Jaqueline Kennedy looked good in them, but that's because her hair was so short and her face was the right shape: they just worked. I don't care for them on anyone else I've ever seen wearing them...and for Easter, a day of celebration, it looks too business-like for my taste. I would much rather see her in something like she wore for trooping the color (I think it was this when they were on the balcony, she was in cream, the hat was cream with a flower, her hair pulled to the side and the big button earrings).

I definitely agree with you Rebecca that for me personally it is more about good PR, showing family solidarity. Also showing respect for the Church as an institution with a significant history, etc. As you point out, the Queen is head of the Church of England, which is very different from the US as well, of course, where church and state are also separate. But sometimes I do envy the sense of community that the Church of England brings--for example I always particularly enjoy the Queen's Christmas speech. And there is no tradition for such a thing in the U.S., even a non-denominational New Year's speech, or something. I don't want to write much more, because I think I'm getting too political, but I do feel in the US at least that we are an extremely fragmented culture, and I envy the sense of community in England. But I imagine Sweden is VERY different from the U.S. in that there is probably much more of a sense of community in Sweden, much more of a communal culture, which does NOT exist in the U.S. My maternal grandfather was Swedish, and I have always wanted to visit Sweden. I will someday!!

(Whilst sending her all Easter wishes) Belief ultimately comes from within and can be observed privately - and not every one who attends church has always found Christ in their hearts - sadly, we know that isn't so, although forgiveness is for all.
DeleteBut at the same time a parish can provide a wonderful community of support - of helping others, of opening arms and welcoming people into a community (at a time when the sense of neighbourhoods has often been lost) of supporting others through troubles and illness, of giving a place of belonging, of supporting the heritage of the past, of being one more resource where issues of mental and physical health and worries can be addressed, and of being a place births are recognised, marriages are celebrated (not as often as they used to be) and the end of life is memorialised with the hope of salvation to come.
At services today, I felt the warmth of love surrounding me but, oh, it is such an aging group and on Good Friday, the attendance were so small. That's why I believe that for many, faith can be a private issue, but for the future head of the church, a public appearance is very important - showing that worship isn't just for grandmothers and great-grandmothers but can be a hopeful and welcoming place for young couples and families as well, not to mention singles. So many parishes must be combined, so many wonderful church buildings are being sold off - perhaps this can't change but it should be on the mind of the man who is the future head of it - if nothing changes. (And I don't believe it should although inclusiveness to other faiths is also extremely important.)
You wouldn't expect a future caption of a ship never to appear amongst the sailors at sea, even if he sails privately, or the future head of a building firm, never to be present at a site, even if he does DIY. That's why I think today was a most important occasion - the present head of the church and the future head worshipping together humbly before God on the most important Christian day of the year.

I agree with you, Julia, in everything you said about how a parish can provide a wonderful community of support. And I would add a parish can at the same time encompass a wide spectrum of interpretations of faith (by that I mean, a wide spectrum--at least this is true in the Episcopalian Church in the U.S.--in what people interpret God to be, or how they chose to incorporate the idea of God in their life). So I saw the Royal Family appearing together as a declaration of community (and all the support, mutuality, etc that it entails) as much as of faith.
DeleteAmen, Julia. Today is the most important of days. And also, I think that those who would be enemies of Britain take notice of the RF's regular church attendance. It connotates solidarity, hope and strength. And I think they take note also of how the British honor their military who have made the ultimate sacrifice. All these things add up to something strong and good, in my opinion.

Christen, your comment made me think (and it's just a sort of pun): it was another Declaration - of Independence - that wrote history. I completely understand its historical meaning and importance but somehow I feel that in today's world we need a lot of declarations of community, support and mutuality as you called it!

I agree we definitely public declarations--and rituals and traditions, too--that endorse the importance of community, mutuality, etc. Because our world now changes so quickly and is so fragmented in a way, that I think it is our job to try to work to contain the instability that is being created. Blah! I guess that's enough theorizing for one day! I really really appreciate having this blog to say these kinds of things, though.
DeleteOne thing William and Catherine have taught us this year is to expect the unexpected with them. About the time we think there is a pattern to attending, or not attending, events they mix it up and surprise us.
ReplyDeleteToday was a lovely surprise! They both look happy and healthy. The Queen is the star of the day and Kate in a light color without pulling attention from the Queen. This coat fits her perfectly and is a flattering silhouette on Kate. Catherine Walker is a wonderful fitime for Kate for many reasons. Their clean, classic lines and styles work well for Kate. The material is always very beautiful and never looks cheap. Their tailoring is usually spot on for Kate and they really seem to understand Kate's style and translate it very well into beautifully wearable clothing.
So needless to say I love the coat. Her hair works well with the pillbox hat she is wearing. I think I like the square shape of the hat and it is much better than a fascinator would have been. The shoes look good and this is one instance where I don't mind the matching of the color.
She looks effortlessly chic and I love that she wore the earrings that the Queen has loaned to her.
They had the same earrings on? Kind of looks like it.

ReplyDeleteThe Duchess has seriously knocked it out of the park sartorially for me today, for probably the first time since the red Preen in Canada if I'm being honest. I loved this coat in Canada but we didn't see much of it before they boarded the plane and I really hoped to see it again; the addition of the pillbox and the Queen's earrings have just taken it up about ten levels for me! If this is a sign of what we can expect from Kate when she steps up to being a full-time royal, I can't wait!
As I'm stuck at home working today, this has made my Easter Sunday. A very happy Easter to Charlotte and everybody out there reading - hope you're having a lovely one whether it's part of your faith or not.
It really is a great look. My quibbles aside (which are more the kind of "analyzing pictures" quibbles than actual feeling and first reaction quibbles) it is a very elegant and regal look.
DeleteI think she has been consistently solid lately with her fashion choices even when they weren't to my taste. There have been a few fabulous looks and some younger looks recently as well. I agree and hope this means she will be stepping everything up with the move. The number of engagements and fashion so far this year bode well for the future.

I think a different pair of shoes and bag really would have made a difference here. It is too bland for me this time. I am not a fan of the pillow box hat though with this one I am bit on a fence here. Something is off with her updo and a hat combo.

They probably have spent easter in the UK for the past 2 years. They could have spent it with the middletons or charles. She does look nice but she could've changed the hat and shoes to a different color.

DeleteI see where you're coming from with the ultra-matching colour scheme; I'm not usually a fan of that either, but I don't mind at all today for some reason. I think if I was to change anything, I would change the clutch (much as I like it) and keep the shoes. If there is such a thing, a lovely flowery, spring-like clutch would have been gorgeous for Easter.

She just likes match matchy, and sometimes it ends up looking bland, Sophie is in pink, and autumn is in a pretty blue, so I don't think it has to do with focusing on the queen, or most would have been in more neutral colours. Plus, it's Easter! Even a pretty purple or mint would have been nice!

Her dressing "bland" has nothing to do with the Queen. I agree with Anon 18.05
Kate was criticized for wearing red while attending the Queen's jubilee flotilla. The Queen was in white. She was accused of upstaging the queen. I also remember reading that the queen was annoyed with Diana when she gave a speech in parliament and Diana chose to debut a new hairstyle during that occasion.

ReplyDeleteIt seems that they didn't observe the usual "pecking order" on the way to church or even upon entering the church. Eugenie entered right before William and Kate and others had already gone in before Eugenie. They usually follow the pecking order (at least for the senior royals) on their Christmas walk.

DeleteI just checked, and the brooch is called the Queen Mother's shell brooch; the official name is the the Courtauld Thomsen Scallop-Shell Brooch. As per the website "From Her Majesty's Jewel Vault": It was designed by Lord Courtauld-Thomsen and was made in 1919. It was left to Queen Elizabeth, the future Queen Mother, in 1944 by his sister, Winifred Hope Thomsen. The Queen Mother wore it often; most notably, she wore it during her 100th birthday celebrations. The Queen has worn it on the following occasions, as per the website:

DeleteThe Queen Mum died on March 30 - just at Easter if I recall correctly. I've noticed the queen has several times chosen brooches of her mother's at Easter, this one, the centennial rose one and the aquamarines. I do think it speaks of her thinking of her mother at this time, just as I can never attend Easter services without thinking of my parents.

ReplyDeleteIt is also reported they attended Crathie Kirk with Charles, church in Anglesey and church in Berkshire with the Middletons so it is far from the first time they have gone to church at Easter as some are commenting.
As to that fact that other family members turn out every Easter, don't forget, the Yorks live at the Royal Lodge in Windsor and with neither girl married are likely to be home for Easter. Edward's family live nearby and are reported regularly to spend Sundays and others times at Windsor, with both Sophie and Louise riding in the park with HM. Peter Phillips is often at these gatherings when Zara isn't and I get the impression his wife likes to attend. The point is, they are a family, and a large family at that, so it's no surprise they aren't all there every year. How often do Charles and Camilla attend, for example?

I'm sorry if I misinterpreted but the paragraph ends "...It may signal a new tradition where they alternate between both families." That's what they've been doing throughout: 2011 - Middletons; 2012 - Charles & Camilla; 2013 - Anglesey; 2014 - Australia; 2015 - Presumed with the Middletons; 2016 - William at Jecca Craig's wedding & Kate in Bucklebury. So, work aside (Australia and search & rescue in Wales) they have been alternating. The one exception was last year but Kate going to her parents on her own was entirely understandable and natural.
DeleteI'm sorry if what I wrote was confusing. In the last post, we were chatting about how William and Kate spend Easter, and how there isn't a set pattern or routine. It depends on a number of factors. Now they'll be living in London, we could see Easter at Windsor become a part of alternating the occasion and, with George and Charlotte getting older, perhaps they'll start their own tradition at Anmer every other year or so. It will be interesting to see and will of course depend on if they are on tour, etc.

I would love to see them continue at Windsor - for it is a time to spend with family - and for the queen, and every future monarch - the nation is family. A private observance closes the door on that family - a public does not - I can imagine changes but I hope it includes the nation more, not less, perhaps with attending public services in different places like the rotation for Maundy Thursday.

ReplyDeleteI am not really surprised to see them, after they decided to spend Christmas with the Middletons. But I don't agree that it is a sign of them stepping up. It is just the reality of balancing two families. I for one is happy if the spend most Christmasses at Sandringham and Easter in Berkshire. With a swop once in a while. It would be interesting to see if Charles will spend Easter at Windsor when he is King. So maybe this is a moot point.

While I like pillboxes and it gives a regal look, the size and/or shapes on this one doesn't work.
And while I don't know how they missed each other at breakfast I love any opportunity to see a curtsey. It happens way to seldom.

ReplyDeleteKate looks lovely, a white coat is perfect for Easter. Loved all her accessories. Her hair looked perfect with that hat - the style - which I love - reminds me of Boyd although it could be anyone. I would have added a brooch - that's the only quibble - to me that coat is crying for one - either the pearl or the one Kate wore at Christmas or - hint William, or for a loan from the queen - something new. Know they aren't a young woman thing but with what she will inherit, I would love to see a brooch Kate-effect (as one who loves them.)
The queen is a vision of spring and so pretty - and her brooch is one of my favourites - when I saw the first photos a few hours ago, I was afraid she wasn't wearing one (I'm collecting the queen's brooches on slides this year for the fun of it.) But she is, and one she hasn't worn yet this year.
Sophie looks very pretty in pink, a lovely colour on her - and Louise is getting to be such a lady. Autumn Philips also looks very nice in a beautiful shade of blue - the York girls - well, nice to see them and nothing really wrong - their looks don't do much for me.
But most of all, I am just thrilled to see the Cambridges - as I have said - I thought it was time. It would be nice to think the children are there - they are too young to attend, I suppose, for such a big church (I wouldn't have thought so, I take the Swedish view.) But it would be nice to think the queen has a chance to see them.
And Royalfan - note the absence of Charles and Camilla - perhaps they have made Scotland their tradition.
What is the name of the brooch she wore today, Julia? Do you know? I agree with you about brooches also. I love them.

DeleteAs observed, it is the lovely Queen Mum's shell brooch - and the shell imagine for me is perfect for Easter. From Her Majesty's Jewel Vault has the description. Tracking the queen's brooches is great fun - it can become something of an addiction. Jewel Vault tracks them formally, but I've been keeping track of which old favourites of mine and the queen's appear - and what less commonly worn ones show - but where, oh, where is my favourite star brooch? Missing so far this year.

With a faint but legible name for each brooch gently under each brooch? I have seen such posters done to highlight many things, like beautiful types of peppers for kitchen display, flowers for the flower enthusiast, and even ones showing various kinds of trout and bass for fishing enthusiast. A brooch one would be great thing for posterity I think and for fans of the Queen and her brooches (we can't be the only ones, lol). And would give us easy brooch identification at the ready. The proceeds could go to one of the Queen's favorite charities. What do you think? :)

DeleteI would love to see it down (it would be great for the lady who runs jewel vault - but if it were done to be marketed - I don't know if there would be licensing issues - obviously many royal souvenirs are done unofficially but I remember that The Crown was barred from using the scroll tiara because of such issues. A book on the brooches would be great (I had wished there was one on the queen's dresses exhibit too - like Chatsworth has now done._
But I used Easter Monday to go back over the brooches to pick out ones I would have loved to see on Kate's coat. I intentionally choose ones the queen has not worn for a couple of years - no wish to interfere with her collection or take her favourites. I would love to see a rotating loan collection where Sophie could use them too.
Three Sapphire possibilities none of which the queen has worn frequently or recently and all would go with Kate's ring/
The Sapphire Chrysanthemum - this was an early brooch of the queen's and might be too sentimental - she did wear it for anniversary photos but I think it would be perfect for Kate's coat.
The Sapphire and Diamond Grapes - this belonged to the Queen Mum - the queen doesn't wear it often and it's a bit small for her - perfect for a younger woman like Kate.
The Sapphire and Ruby flower spray is another one dating from when the queen was young, given to the queen by her parents. But it hasn't been worn since 2011 and rarely before that - again it isn't really the queen's current style but would have been a lovely springish colour pop for Kate.
The multi-color spray brooch - another rarely worn that would be nice - small for the queen - perfect for Kate.
Gold Foliate - another rarely worn by the queen that has a more youthful vibe for Kate.
The queen Mum's multi-colour leaf brooch is a fabulous one the queen has never worn with a very contemporary feel to it - what fun it would be to see it on Kate.
For aquamarines - I can see loaning to Sophie too as she loves Aquamarine - that Malta Aquamarine would seem one contemporary possibility - or a set of the clips since the queen has two.
I would assume the more historic brooches will go to Camilla (sob but that's how it is - although I like the brooches she has =especially that super expensive ballerina. This is probably just a dream but how pretty that sapphire chrysanthemum would have looked on the Walker coat.

DeleteI looked up the brooches you thought would look good on Kate's Catherine Walker coat. You are right they would all have looked beautiful on that coat. Such a neutral outfit to showcase any of those. I particularly like the Sapphire Crysanthemum and the Sapphire and Diamond Grapes one. The provenance of each is so fun to research. Such history. Oh that I would be given a beautiful sapphire and diamond brooch for simply launching an oil tanker. :)
P.S. I couldn't find the Multi-color Spray Brooch.

DeleteTwo of the brooches I listed come under Multiple Stones, they are the multi-colour floral spray brooch (I left out the floral); The sapphire and ruby flower spray, the multi-colour leaf and the tutti-frutti - all are rarely worn - or never worn by the queen. I suspect in many cases, they don't work well with her vivid outfits or may just not be to her taste - but they would liven up Kate's lovely white coat.
DeleteSo good to see the family attending Easter services together. I love the square pillbox hat with the bow on Kate. It is a refreshing change from the little fascinators most are wearing. All of the family looks great and happy today. Happy Easter everyone.

ReplyDeleteWhile I understand that to be a valid perception and judgement, I'd like to offer an alternative view. For many years as part of my job I led international exchange tours with adolescents. Part of that experience meant shepherding 13-18 year-old students to various sacred sites. From the side, that definitely could be perceived as a "dog and pony show."
However, during some of those tours I experienced profound, life-view altering experiences that were highly personal in nature. An "actual faith experience" in the chaos of a fast-paced tourist-focused tour.
I don't view the two (walk to church or experience inside the church) as mutually exclusive or one as a less real expression of faith than the other. I find that most who live a true life of any faith live an integrated experience of that faith whether inside or outside of the sacred building. Added to that, I also find that I am incapable of judging "a true life of faith" in anyone else. My own heart is all that I know.
Oh, I agree. It might have been too bluntly put. I didn't mean that the official and public part of it excludes it being an "actual faith experience".

Nicole, I thought the same thing. Kate looked really happy, smiley and confident today - full of the joys of spring! William somehow didn't - he looked like he didn't really want to be there (maybe he was annoyed at missing the football!). I hope we're just reading him wrong - he has an awful lot of Easter services to attend in his future!
DeleteFor the first time today, I thought that a lot of the problem with the York girls' outfits might be to do with their posture and facial expressions. They look slumped and a bit gloomy in most of the pictures. Neither of them has a bad figure, and the outfits today are not as bad as some they've worn, they just don't seem to know how to carry themselves properly. Shame - I would love to see them really wow us all for once!
There are quite a few pictures of William smiling, but I saw them on uTube. The newspapers published the ones where he was frowning.

VERY elegant outfit today, I have to say. Personally, it was a tiny little bit too much "beige", I probably would have chosen a more "vibrant" lipstick colour to add some "spice" to the look, but other than that - perfect. The pillbox with the hairdo - g r e a t. I used to love the pillbox on Jackie Kennedy. I remember very vividly seeing old pictures from the early 60ies when I was young and my mum telling me about the famous "Kennedy family" and J.F.K.´s tragic death that kind of ended a dream of a whole generation... Even back then, I thought the pillbox was the epitomy of chic.

Who really blew me today, though, was once again Her Majesty. That colour, plus the black gloves had me positively "swooning" - especially considering the fact that she is going to be 91 (!!!) in a few days!! Prince Philip just the same - I saw all the pictures in one of the newspapers this afternoon, and it was such a treat....
They seem to have quite nice weather over there in Windsor. Unfortunately, I can´t say the same for the southern part of Germany. They even say it´s going to snow this week.....

I have a question re protocol. Sometimes the Royal family enters starting with the most junior and ending with the Queen, and sometimes the Queen enters first and is followed by most senior members down to most junior--or at least distance from the throne, which is what it looked like today. Any ideas of which protocol applies when?

Which make me think (with no proof of course) that they fudge the rule about first meeting slightly. DeleteKate's outfit is so similar to what Jackie Kennedy wore when the Queen dedicated the JFK memorial at Runnymede in 1965 that I think it must have been deliberate. President Kennedy was born on May 29, 1917, 100 years ago next month. I think Kate looked lovely, but the hat is badly made and must have been a last minute purchase. As someone said, the effect of the hat and coat is also similar to 20th century nurses' uniforms. I especially like Kate's clutch. And the Queen's beautiful brooch, along with her bright outfit, so appropriate for Easter.

He talks about seeking help, encouraged by William, and seeking counselling at the age of 28. It's very open, honest and moving. He speaks about his passion for Heads Together, how seeking help has helped him to take his private life seriously and how he's looking forward to having children. I believe it's also a defining moment for the Heads Together campaign, hearing someone like Harry could inspire so many others to seek help.

Amazing! So great of him! They, like all of us, don't owe anyone an explanation on how we're feeling or what we are coping with. But that he felt that he wanted to share is a beautiful thing that can reach so many lives! I cannot imagine having to deal with this in the spotlight. It is really worth a listen and shows a very human side to the royal family! Good for him! And so happy to hear that he seems to have landed in a better place!

DeleteI am in a situation myself at the moment which is testing me far beyond any limits. I have been living in my own appartment for more than 20 years. I gave up a lot and worked like hell to pay for the mortgage, but it was worth it because it was the safe haven I had always been craving for. Unfortunately, during the last years, more and more smokers moved in the house and the houses nearby. The house is located at the edge of a small village, surrounded by pure nature (one of the main reasons I originally moved out here). But believe it or not, there is NO fresh air available here anymore. The air is filled with cigarette smoke DAY AND NIGHT, it is so suffocating, it is UNBELIEVABLE. The smoke is getting through the closed windows, the closed entrance door, I have to get up at 4(!!) o´clock in the morning to get at least some relatively "fresh" air (it stinks of cold smoke instead of warm smoke, but ok, you kind of get to be grateful for the tiniest bit). During the day, I can not open one single window one single crack, or else the rooms will be filled with even more smoke. NO matter with whom of those smokers you talk, they ALL blame someone else. No understanding, no nothing. I have found a new appartment which will cost me an arm and a leg. I will have to sell this one which was my HOME. Prince Harry encouraged me to go out and TALK about it instead of further bottling it up. I can´t even describe how helpless AND scared I feel every single day. My nose, my mouth and my throat are constantly sore, my lungs hurt and whenever I clean my teeth, blood is pouring out because my gum is affected by the constant cigarette smoke as well.
I am a very peaceful person (I think the ones who have been reading my comments over the years have noticed that), but I could literally KILL those people! How can anyone "deal" with his problems by not only harming himself, but at the same time everyone around him? It is beyond me. I pray every day for strength to make it until I can move out, but, as I´ve said,it is testing me to the limits.
Sorry, sorry for ranting, but anyone out there reading this as a smoker, PLEASE, PLEASE give it up - you are not only slowly killing yourself, you make other people´s life a living hell, too!! Go out and TALK about your problems, smoking isn´t going to change ONE SINGLE THING about your problems!! There is a way to overcome addiction, there is!! I overcame anorexia - so you can overcome smoking!
Eve, my prayers are going up for you and your situation. You will find something much better and soon. In the interim can you buy a couple of air filter machines? See your dentist for your bleeding gums if you can. You may be nutrient deficient in some way if your gums are bleeding. Also intermittent use during the day of Listerine can help. (no kidding, :) )
DeleteDo your neighbors rent or own? If they rent perhaps their landlord/landlords can provide some solutions or abatements. Do you have a real estate agent helping you so as to expedite your search? Their may be churches/community organizations that can help also. God is faithful Eve, trust that He will help you with mercy and grace in your time of need as you ask in faith. xxx
I totally agree with you Eve, on every single thing you wrote. I went to Germany a few years ago, and stayed at a friends' parent's apartment. It was awful. Her mother smoked (after her father's cancer diagnosis) and neighbors smoked. I could hardly wait to get out of there, and when I got home and opened my suitcase . . . yikes.
DeleteEve, as a former 20 year cigarette smoker now "clean" for nearly 30 years, I can attest that it can be done. I did not quit "cold turkey." I tapered off to 5-6 a day while I increased exercise-swimming, primarily- to combat increased food intake. My brother, a physician, quit smoking and lost thirty pounds during the same period. He decided to practice what he preached. Not the usual situation. By the time I had decreased to less that half a pack a day I began to be aware of the stink on towels, my clothes, my hair. I had always tried to avoid smoking directly in front of my children, but realised with horror that the odor and fumes from cigarette smoke travels and insidiously makes its way into the ambient air. I never smoked again after that. I never said, "I quit," but just: "Today, this hour, I will not smoke."
DeleteAll this, to not only support you, Eve, but also to illustrate that when one is smoking, one is not aware of the fumes. There may be some suppression of that knowledge on the smoker's part as well, but complaints about the odor will often fall on deaf ears. I hope your new situation works well for you.
I am concerned about your mention of gum-bleeding. This could be a symptom of several underlying conditions or causes. Please don't assume it is from the smoke in the air. I hope you do follow up on that.
Dear Eve, I'm so sorry you have to be going through this! The feeling of frustration must be overwhelming. I do hope you find relief when you move to your new flat. We have just one set of smoking neighbours (the ones below us) and it really bothers me when I want to spend a peaceful minute on the balcony but cannot because the person below is out there, smoking. I completely understand your feelings. Take care and I will pray for strength together with you.

For me, validation of my feelings is the thing most missing in my support system so in the spirit of supporting those who are brave enough to speak about their feelings I would like to offer you validation in your strong feelings of anger and frustration in your particular situation. Most non-smokers find the smell to be overwhelming and irritating to say the least! Not to mention all of YOUR belongings now smelling like smoke! Channel your frustrations into doing whatever it takes to get out of there and best of luck to you. ❤

It would seem that health conscious Europeans would abolish public smoking, as has largely happened in the US. Smoking in private is another matter in terms of control, but we have not sensed efforts in Europe to make smoking a health issue. Why is this?

I come from a family, where me "daring" to voice "I have a problem" usually led to a discussion about whether I REALLY had a problem, whether it was "just" me, whether I was too sensitive, abnormal, picky, etc, whether I was just making it up or maybe the reality was that it was all my fault! Yesterday, I just couldn´t take this situation here anymore, that´s why I poured my heart out. Your support, your compassion, your heartfelt comments and useful suggestions, it just makes my day today, honestly.
DeleteJust for the ones who asked/gave me good advice: I have bought a "Air purifier" (it´s an "Air ionizier", to be precise, recommended by our German environment office), it just can´t cope with the sheer amount that´s constantly coming in from all sides.
The "gum problem" results from my "mucous membrane" (I hope this is the right word?) being constantly "attacked" by the smoke. Me being in my early 50ies and the sinking estrogen level that comes with it, is not really helping, either. I always had a strong physical reaction to cigarette smoke, even as a child I just couldn´t cope with it. The good thing about it was, that I never even touched a cigarette, let alone smoked one...
As to why smoking still isn´t the health issue it should be over here in Europe, that´s a VERY good question I unfortunately have no answer to so far.

DeleteOh, Eve, I feel for you. I used to work with many people who smoked and it didn't trouble me so much then, but now I find it the most loathsome stench and it is horribly bad for everyone not just the smokers. My apologies to those who may smoke - but in saying that - I also add please find a way to quit - it can be done (Leo did it) but we have lost several dear people to lung cancer and whilst there are never promises of good health - this is something we know is bad. It breaks my heart to see the young smoking.
DeleteI would love to see a royal make this their cause, particularly amongst the young, but sadly, I believe they smoke or have smoked - Camilla, Harry and Kate all smoked I know but hopefully all have quit. Young smokers are so defiant it would be lovely to have a young royal speak out - Diana was patron of the British Lung Foundation but I don't know who is now.
Now, maybe Harry feels more ready to be in a relationship. Enter Meghan. :)
ReplyDeleteHarry did not train as a shrink, nor did William or Kate, or Sophie or Anne, but that is the nature of much of their work as Harry detailed so clearly. Yes, they get a lot of benefits to compensate but that doesn't change the fact that they provide a listening ear and empathy to many sad, sad stories every month. Being emotionally healthy themselves is such a bonus in coping with the problems of others. Harry found healing for his wounds, thankfully, and he's willing to talk about it. Thankfully, William kept after him to seek the help he needed, as apparently, William had done before him. Harry just keeps getting better and better. 💕
I liked that he discussed the toll hearing/knowing about others' sad situations can have on a person. I tend to be the sounding board for anyone who knows me. I was discussing my weight gain with someone who deals with people's emotions as a career. She said that when she first got in to her career she gained a lot of weight. Eventually she made the connection between listening to and helping others all day and then coming home and eating a lot. She realized then how "heavy" emotions are and she had to learn healthier techniques to deal with the exposure to others' heavy feelings. It was nice to hear that that day fromher as well as hearing something similar today from Harry.
DeleteAt the end of a day of listening to and being there for others I can feel exhausted yet I've not "done much" in the eyes of some (including my own eyes at times). I'm left exhausted but with nothing to "show for it" and it ends up being a very negative cycle of blaming yourself for being lazy or maybe wondering if I'm physically ill even. Once a professional validated how wearing listening to others and giving advice can be I felt so much better.
I forget the exact numbers Harry used but he said something like it takes an hour to recover from each 30 minutes spent listening to someone who is discussing a sad situation, etc. I am learning that although they are invisible, feelings are very real and affect the one experiencing them as well as the "listener".
Part of improving communications about mental health however involves not only speaking about your problems but having someone who truly listens to you therefore it is just as important, in my opinion, that we acknowledge the role of the "listener" and make that role part of the conversation. Otherwise people may find themselves trying to be a good friend by listening to others' share their problems yet then find it to be a draining task and then go back to avoiding "emotional conversations".
While being a person with, let's say for instance, anxiety can be much harder than being the friend who listens to them and helps them it is still vital that the role of being an active listener and all it involves, good and bad, be part of this discussion and I am so thankful a person like Harry brought that up. :)
It was great seeing the Royals at Easter services, at least some of them. Everyone looked very nice. Loved the Queen's colors today. As usual, Kate is lovely. The pillbox hat reminded me of Jacqueline Kennedy, wife of deceased US president John Kennedy.

ReplyDeleteCharlotte, I wrote a reply to one of the comments saying that I basically loved everything about Kate's outfit. Then I went on to say that I believe that her botox/fillers are bit much this time around. You did not publish the comment. Is botox off limits on the blog? I thought it is well known and very very evident that Kate uses it quite liberally. Many of us don't consider it to be a negative thing at all. In fact if you poll your readers you may find that quite a few of us have used it and love it ! Can you address your policy about this topic? If hair extension talk is allowed then I would urge you to consider allowing botox/filler talk. I don't know your personal opinion on the matter but most women can use all the help they can get and have no shame in admitting it.

DeleteThank you very much for your comments. This is a topic I have given quite a lot of consideration, I try to see the situation from all angles. I'm just not comfortable at all with discussion on botox/cosmetic surgery and most of all comments suggesting Kate has an eating disorder or looks emaciated. When we critique Kate's clothes or hair, well we know definitively she wore Catherine Walker but to definitively say she's using botox feels quite different to me. It's something that cannot be substantiated but could very quickly create a negative environment here.
Given Kate's fan base which includes readers here as young as 12, and the fact a couple of the online news outlets scour blogs and forums for 'stories', I'm mindful of those factors.
I know people will disagree with my view on this, however I don't feel this is the space for that discussion.

I agree with you Charlotte. It's not a question of it being right or wrong, good or bad. But rather not encourage the heavy discussions that is likely to show up. Just like politics and religion is not proper dinner conversations (Although I have to say this blog managed immensly well with talking a bit of religion this post!) I think that botox, plastic surgery, too thin/thick, pregnancy speculation and other such topic is polite to not bring up. If that makes sense :)

I agree, with you, Charlotte. I don't think botox should be presented as a positive thing to young people. Adults who wish to use it, will find enough information on it elsewhere. If the blog serves as an inspiration for people to improve their appearance through fashion and hair styles, that's a very different thing than possibly inspiring someone to use botox. (based on assumptions that Kate uses it, which we certainly don't know)

I have no opinion on whether this topic should be allowed or not, but I do remember back when Kate met with Michelle Obama there being articles about Kate recommending an organic Botox to Michelle.

As Rebecca points out, it is not a question of right or wrong, but as you I think state perfectly, when we talk about Kate's clothing we know her outfit is a McQueen or Catherine Walker or even if not we are talking about the color, cut, etc, and it is a factual thing, whereas with something like Botox, it is pure speculation, there is nothing factual to go on. So in terms of journalistic/blog ethics, it makes good ethical sense to me to refrain from speculation without factual back-up.
DeletePS I would add that I also agree strongly about not commenting on Kate's weight. As you point out, doing so can add an element of speculation about eating disorder etc. And it is completely inappropriate for us to speculate about things like that. Speaking from my professional role as a physician and psychiatrist, I can say that the only way one can justifiably comment on something like that is if someone has done a medical and/or psychiatric evaluation of someone in person. But I think this blog has been so excellent in terms of maintaining appropriate boundaries, and I thank you, Charlotte, for your leadership on that, and everyone else for working to make this a thought-provoking, fun, balanced, and safe place.

DeleteI suppose I agree in the case of Kate about not mentioning weight - as Christen points out - it requires a diagnosis - but having said that - I'm not completely comfortable, because I went through the period when Diana looked terribly thin - gaunt (much more so than Kate) and we whispered about it but no one wanted to speak out. Was that right? Was that healthy? I'm not sure - it is in some ways not our business but to say someone looks good when they in fact look too thin, might help contribute to the problem - just as praise for these very thin models doesn't seem right. So I don't know - but realise why it is so difficult. I'm not certain silence is always wise, but never want to judge people either. I just wish it would become fashionable to be a healthy weight.

ReplyDeleteSo I have to say it and agree with posters remarking that Kate resembles a mid century American nurse because she really does. If Kate's image in the photographs were blurred at all, she would look very apparition like walking among the royals. I think when one wears all white or cream, one needs to be mindful of the shape and proportion of things or strange associations can happen.
So impressed that Harry is speaking about his own struggles. I think he will be able to help and connect with people because of it.
She looks beautiful! I don't mind that her outfit is so neutral- I think it makes it more sophisticated!

ReplyDeleteHarry is reportedly bringing Meghan to the evening party after the wedding (but not to the ceremony and reception). Do we know anything about the evening party? Where will it be, etc?
ReplyDeleteIt is not an evening party. It is the wedding reception. It is being held at the Middletons home. I read that the church is small so it is limited in the number of attending. And I think Pippa does not want anything or anyone taking the spotlight away from her. I don't blame her.
DeleteI think they are having a tented reception on the Middleton's estate. Can you imagine the security involved? No celebrity seekers with cameras on that property OR in the air space over it is my guess. They will have the 2nd, 3rd., 4th., and 5th in succession to the throne there all at once and for more than just a couple of minutes. They will no doubt be houseguests at least for one night and my guess is overnight before the wedding and overnight after the reception. Security will be incredible, particularly since the event has been announced in advance. I hope we get photos though, of the reception, cake, her gown, George and Charlotte, Kate, Harry and Meghan, Carole and Mike ...........

DeleteI believe the Middletons are having a marquee set up on their grounds (from what I have heard - my invite was lost in the mail!) I should imagine it would be there.
DeleteIt's quite common to have an evening party with dancing - especially if the church is too small to invite everyone and their partners.
I listened to Harry's podcast, and I have such respect for him. Also empathy, he went through so much with the loss of his mother. Unfortunately there wasn't anyone to help during his young days, and get him some counseling. He spoke of not dealing with his emotions for 20 years, and how his brother kept encouraging him to get help. He came close to a breakdown, but got the help he needed.As he said, it's the timing, one has to want to deal with their stresses. Harry, his brother and sister-in-law are to be commended for shining the light on mental health.

Still to this day whenever I see the two boys walking after their mother's casket I always wondered how they ever were able to cope...breaks my heart every time. It also speaks to the relationship between the brothers that they talk to each other and that William encouraged him to seek help. In some ways I think William's work with the air ambulance has helped him to recognize the importance of dealing with trauma in one's life. The three are to be commended for their efforts on behalf of mental health....it is an extremely important initiative. cc

I think it has had a great impact both on how they themselves handle and see things and also how they want their professional work to be.

ReplyDeleteI just watched the arrival video and noticed as they walked up to the church it seemed as if in no particular order, but then it appeared they lined up in order of succession as the Queen walked in. I assume that is normal protocol but never really noticed before the intentional lining up in order.

DeleteI have read that Meaghan's mom is a therapist. I wonder if that might have had some influence on Harry's decision to speak. As well, of course, witnessing others in their Heads Campaign. I hope that the dialogue is trickling down to families as well. It was terrific that William encouraged Harry to get help but I wonder, who helped William?

DeleteI love this look on Catherine! The close up photographs of the coat show the seaming details, which I think are fabulous. The pillbox hat picks up on the seam details I think and looks very Jackie O to me. With Catherine's coloring, the neutral colors work perfectly.

First, the Queen looks wonderful. Love the attention to detail, the black trim on the hat that ties to the buttons, gloves, etc.; touch of pink on the lips; pearls, pearls and pearls! And well the brooch....beautiful!!
ReplyDeleteSecond, think that Kate looks very lovely as she curtsies to the Queen. She seems to do things quite effortlessly and always with a smile on her face. While can't see the Queen's face, I imagine she has a smile too and is nodding "Hello Catharine"!
Third, Kate looks quite beautiful and especially regal. I am a fan of this look and think the repeat is appropriate. The clutch is a nice little addition and gives some texture. I would have added a brooch to the coat, but then this is really Kate's style, classily simple and elegant. Could be my imagination, but think Kate is standing a little straighter and holding her head up. cc
I always love seeing old pictures of the royal family. Thought I would share this as I think that Charlotte does favor her grandmother! Even the Queen had her own drama to deal with when she was married. Love the Queen Mother's comment when asked if she was leaving England during WWII!! DeleteI loved seeing Catherine repeat this beautiful coat. The updo and pillbox hat were both a nice way to change the look. However, like several others have already said, I would have loved to see a nice brooch to add a pop of interest. I was surprised that my first that was that her overall look was a little washed out and bland. I wonder if I liked the coat the first time around more because she was in a shot with her whole family, who added color to the pictures (especially's Charlotte's red sweater). Interesting. I still think she looked lovely, but I still would have added a brooch.
ReplyDeleteI find it wonderful that William and Harry are speaking out - whilst it's not necessary to share a problem to support a cause - it is always helpful where there is a real connection, especially when people are being encouraged to speak out. We've seen how supportive it is to share issues on this blog and how many different perspectives we've seen.
