It's Catherine Walker & McQueen for Day Two of the Royal Tour!

Day Two of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's royal visit to Sweden began with a focus on the country's pioneering work in the field of mental health and children's wellbeing, and in particular how this translates into support for children and young teenagers going through the Swedish education system.

Kate made a stylish arrival.

The Duke and Duchess, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel began the day at the world famous Karolinska Institute, which accounts for over 40 per cent of the medical academic research conducted in Sweden.

The Crown Princess and the Duchess greeted each other with a kiss.

An arrival video.

The foursome posed for photos before heading inside.

The Karolinska Institute was founded by King Karl XIII on 13 December 1810 as an "academy for the training of skilled army surgeons" after one in three soldiers wounded in the Finnish War against Russia died in field hospitals. Indeed, a report of the time came to the conclusion that "the medical skills of the army barber-surgeons are manifestly inadequate, so Sweden needs to train surgeons in order to better prepare the country for future wars." Just one year later, in 1811, the Karolinska Institute was granted license to train not only surgeons but medical practitioners in general. Today, it is considered one of the largest and most prestigious medical universities in the world. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

The royals met with leading scientific researchers and practitioners to discuss ground-breaking academic work in developmental psychology, and Sweden’s approach to managing mental health challenges, including the impact of physical activity on mental health.

They also heard about the Youth Aware of Mental Health (YAM) programme run by the National Association for Suicide Research and Prevention of Mental Ill Health (NASP). YAM is a programme run for 14 – 16 year olds promoting increased knowledge about mental health through dialogue and role-play, and now operates internationally, including in the UK.

More on the programme:

'Based on empathy building and finding solutions as a group, the YAM youth reflect and analyse their actions through play and dialogue. Through the discussion of different perspectives on problems, the participants learn that they as individuals are not alone responsible for solving their problems, but that they can together help each other to feel better. Identifying mental health resources in the community and connecting individuals and schools with such organisations.'

Mental Health is a key focus for William and Kate, it's good to see it incorporated into the tour itinerary. As the Heads Together campaign continues, it's a wonderful opportunity for them to learn more about services offered in the country. Sweden is renowned for their healthcare system which has been described as "among the best in the world".

From there, the royals headed to Matteusskolan, a comprehensive school in the heart of the city centre.

They joined children who have taken part in the YAM programme during one of their mental health activity sessions.

They also met mentors who run the training.

Prince William spoke about the importance of young people having conversations about mental health challenges. "Catherine and I and Victoria and Daniel care deeply about mental health. It's all about early intervention. Sometimes a conversation is enough."

Children held British and Swedish flags.

The Duchess greets locals during a walkabout.

You can see Kate's private secretary Catherine Quinn in the background wearing black.

More from the Mail Online:

'One teenager, more in hope than expectation, quizzed the Duchess about her taste in rap music: 'I asked her if she knew J Hus,' said Lucas Tinseau, 15. 'She said 'I will look out for him. He added: 'I asked her how her grandmother was, Queen Elizabeth. She said, 'I will say hello from you.''
Malte Bregqvist, 15, a ninth grade pupil, said: 'I shook both their hands. It was weird, I never really met a royal before. I asked them how they were and they said the same thing to everyone, they were nice, they were doing fine. It's generous of them to take time and shake everybody's hands.'
Robin Szoppe, 15, also in ninth grade, said: 'Kate just walked in front of me and I said 'hi and shook her hand. She said she was good. She just walked by. Fellow student Kendal Kaya, 15, added: 'You would think they would be a bit arrogant because they're famous but they were really polite. It was really nice. They were casual people.'

Handshakes and high-fives as the royals departed.

And a wave goodbye before travelling to their next appearance.

Next, the two Royal couples visited one of Sweden's leading department stores – NK – to open an interactive exhibition of UK design, fashion and brands that operate in Sweden.

Kate and Daniel heard about shoe design.

A short video from Victoria Murphy.

The Mail reports:

'Alicia Lai, founder of vegan shoe company Bourgeois Boheme, which makes shoes out of materials including cork and recycled rubber showed her products to Kate.
She said: 'We're here to show people there is an alternative to what's out there in the mainstream, to leather, because leather isn't the most sustainable material out there. For us quality is key.'
She said of Kate and Prince Daniel: 'They hadn't heard of vegan shoes before so that was great to introduce them to that and look at the ethos behind our work. They were really interested in our product. Kate was asking about the materials we are using, how large is our range. 'We're such a small company that being given the recognition for what we're doing is great.'

They heard how UK brands are putting innovation, technology and sustainable practices at the forefront of their businesses.

William and Victoria looked at innovative furniture designs.

The event took place in NK's entrance hall, and for the duration of the exhibition the best of British brands will feature in the display windows of the store.

A look inside.

Next, William and Kate travelled to Haga Palace, Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel's official residence, for a private tea with the couple.

They were joined by two very special guests - Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar.

I think a playdate with George and Charlotte is in order :)

The Duchess wore a red and white houndstooth Catherine Walker coat with large red buttons. It's the second consecutive day Kate has chosen the British brand.

Kate teamed the coat with a bespoke Alexander McQueen dress.

The piece features the same fabric as the Metallic wool-blend bouclé-tweed midi dress. It is described as "Alexander McQueen's Pre-Fall '17 collection is inspired by the medieval heroines of Arthurian legend - Isolde, Guinevere and the Lady of the Lake. Beautifully made from wool-blend bouclé-tweed, this midi dress is flecked with gold yarns".

The bouclé tweed is 'very Chanel'.

Speaking of the fashion house, The Duchess carried her Chanel Bag with Enamel Handle from the Fall/Winter 2015/2016 Collection.

It's good to see Kate carrying chic small handbags instead of clutches during this tour. They add a stylish finishing touch to the overall look.

Kate wore her £267 Tod's Pumps with fringes. The shoes feature an almond toe, fringed detailing and metal buckle on the toe, with leather insole.

TOD's

Kate's pearl drop earrings are by Swedish brand In2Design.

I emailed the brand and they believe the Duchess wore their $152 Baroque Pearl Drop Earrings. They are also available at Banana Republic. Princess Sofia of Sweden is also a fan of the brand. For those in Europe, if you wish to purchase the earrings, In2Design are accepting orders via email.

In2Design

More from the product description:

'Inspired by the simplicity and modern elegance of Swedish design, In2Design was founded in 2002 to produce handcrafted jewelry that is modern, classic, unique and highly wearable. These elegant Baroque pearl drop earrings showcase the unique shape and color of these classic, freshwater pearls. Due to the nature of Baroque freshwater pearls, each is a one-of-a-kind original. Each piece is unique as the exact pearls will vary.'

And Kate wore her Cornelia James Imogen gloves.

In their article on the look, The Telegraph writes, How Jackie Kennedy became the Duchess of Cambridge's style muse:

'In the second series of popular Netflix drama, The Crown, the Queen visits Norman Hartnell’s atelier in preparation for a state visit by the American president. She is looking for something modern, and fresh; a look which will compete with the US First Lady, Jackie Kennedy. The unflappable British monarch is intimidated by Kennedy’s globally-famed style. Though the scene may be grounded in imagination, Jackie Kennedy’s international status as the first lady of fashion is undisputed.
And now, her style seems to be inspiring the Duchess of Cambridge. For today’s visit, to Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, she followed Kennedy’s style to the letter (see lead image). First, her double-breasted Catherine Walker swing coat. echoes a recurring style in Kennedy's wardrobe, and one she wore throughout her pregnancies during the 1950s. Kate accessorised the coat with black gloves, a compact Chanel handbag, pearl earrings by Swedish label In2 design and Tod’s loafer-style court shoes. Underneath, she wore a bespoke cream bouclé dres by Alexander MCQueen. Each piece is straight out of the Jackie catalogue.
This is the latest in a long-line of examples of Kate emulating the former first lady. There was a red Carolina Herrera dress coat; accessorised with a perfect chignon and pearl drop earrings, the look was vintage Jackie. Then came the tailored suits, nipped at the waist - lilac Catherine Walker, checked Eponine London. Gradually ‘The Jackie Look’ is filtering into the Duchess’ wardrobe.
Keeping up with fashion today is a minefield - navigating multiple collections, trends which come and go faster than you can blink and a never-ending stream of influencers. The answer, when your every style move is documented, lies in finding a formula which cuts through the noise. Rules which create a style baseline, and will help govern which pieces feel simultaneously ‘now’ and will translate for years to come- that tweed Gucci dress and today's Alexander McQueen shift are a cases in point. And looking to the tried, tested and universally approved wardrobe of one of the most stylish women of the last century - it makes perfect sense.'

Meanwhile, People noted similarities between the look and one Diana wore several times in the early nineties.

The eagle-eyed Heaven noted Princess Victoria selected Swedish brands today; wearing the Avalon coat by Acne and a pastel blue suit by Rodebjer. Victoria's grey clutch is by Stella McCartney.

Victoria wasn't the only one supporting Acne today - Richard Palmer revealed William's jumper is from the Swedish fashion house.

This evening, the Duke and Duchess will attend an event at the Fotografiska Gallery.

WOW! Stunning! I love houndstooth, I love red, I love those shoes, I love that silouette! STUNNING! Love love love it!

(No comments on the events yet since well, it hasn't started! But loved seeing the royals greet eachother!)

  3. Oh yes! Jumpy claps from me this morning! This is definitely my favourite look of the tour so far - although I must confess when I saw Richard Palmer's images my first thought was to wonder how on earth she'd managed to squeeze into her Eponine suit at six months pregnant!

Just lovely. I wonder if she'll take the coat off indoors this time so that we can see the dress? It seems unusual for her to wear a (presumably) bespoke dress by one designer and a coat by a different one, is this a first?

    1. Edited to add: Now seen the dress and I love that too! I think the seaming around the empire line makes a big difference to the look of the piece - it just looks so much more structured and classy than the Goat dresses she wore earlier in the pregnancy which just seemed to hang without any definition in my view.

Massive thumbs up today so far! I hope she gets opportunities to wear these pieces again before she goes on maternity leave.

    2. The dress is the star of the show for me today. It does fit her perfectly and the material is beautiful. Looks great with the oxblood accessories. I am having a bit of trouble with the muddy colored stockings however.

  4. Kate looks glowing. Love the coat, however, do not like the accessories with it. The colour combination does not mix at all for me. Makes the overall outfit look dated instead of modern and chic.

Oh, I love the combo! I love that it's not safe or matching and that it's nearly close in colour but not really!

    2. I thought the color combination was off too, KiwiNic, until I saw Kate without the coat on. It looked smashing with the dress. Overall, this look is an absolute winner for me. As someone else said earlier, I love houndstooth and I love red. A beautiful coat!
Forgive me if this is off topic to the blog but I was surprised when Daniel was made a Prince upon marriage. Does anyone know what he will be called when Victoria ascends the throne? Still Prince Daniel or something else?

      Delete
    3. I agree with KiwiNic! I love the coat but the handbag and shoes doesn't go well with that bright red. Still a nice look, but not a favourite.

      Delete
    4. Prince Daniel will stick with his HRH when the Crown Princess ascends. The other European Royal families allow the spouse to Prince/Princess before their name. Prince Daniel also was given the courtesy title of Duke, since the Crown Princess was already a Duchess.

I’m my opinion, a coat doesn’t NEED to match accessories. I think she was teaming her dress underneath with the accessories (whites and burgundies). I think the coat is just that...the coat (which is fabulous in and of itself :)

      Delete
    6. I agree, not a fan of the bright red and burgundy together. Love the coat, just not matched with these accessories.

      Delete
    7. I do NOT like burgundy with such a bright red coat especially bag AND shoes. I think a coat should look well coordinated ( not matchy matchy but coordinated) since she spends so much time being seen with coat on and off. Love the burgundy with the white dress though.

Kate usually does such a good job with burgundy like matching it with a pink that just has enough of hue to coordinate well. Looking good with Charlotte in the colors along side her too.

I wonder how our approach in Sweden differes to that in the UK when it comes to mental health! Will be a very interesting and educational visit all around, I hope :)

Also, I've never heard of that jewelry brand before. Alot of styles that fit in with Kate's style. A bit Soru and Mirabelle in looks!

  6. Classic, stylish and radiant Kate again ! Her greeting with Victoria is so warmly and nice.

  7. A fantastic schedule of engagements for today, particularly because there is a continued focus on William and Kate's area of interest (mental health) and children. It's great to see them exploring this theme on their tours because it illustrates the importance of mental health as it is relevant to everyone, regardless of where you're from. It can affect anyone so bravo to them for highlighting this issue even on their foreign trips.

Kate looks smashing in this coat! She has redeemed herself from last night's Erdem gown. Victoria looks splendid as well and comes across as a very endearing and kind person. It's very gracious of them to accompany William and Kate and show them around Sweden.

    Love Avee in SA

    1. Just love the pictures with their children. Kate gets A+ for today's chic look, and on second look I do like Victoria's pant suit. Just didn't care much for the peach colored jacket. She didn't look warm enough either. The four of them seem very in sync with one another. Lovely.

  9. I migh give the coat and the dressa pass but the bag and the shoes match not at all. they look like a color blind chose them.

    ReplyDelete
  10. like the coat, but the accessories don't match at all, Kate must have a final say as to what she will wear, it almost seems like she is trying too hard to be different

  11. Now this is the Kate we know and love ! Her hair is the first thing that stands out. This style is so flattering on her.
The coat is gorgeous style colour and cut. If I was being picky, I would have had black buttons, and thicker black tights, and her black Mulberry bag from yesterday, coupled with her Tods black shoes. Looking forward to seeing what the dress is like under the coat :-)
Lovely the way the Royals greet each other. Hope that William and Catherine invite Victoria and Daniel and their children, over to the UK, even on a private visit.
Thank you Charlotte, you have been fantastic with the reporting and updates !

  15. A perfect outfit! This coat makes my (short) list of Catherine Walker pieces I love: the black velvet coat, the grey dress from long ago and now this! I also love the McQueen dress and adore the fabric especially. The shoes and bag have been favorites of mine and I'm always happy to see them again. I also like Kate's hair very much, at this length I prefer this style very much to the curls.
I like Victoria's outfit as well and love how the colors of her & Kate's outfit complement each other :)

I know I'm going to sound like I'm obsessed with the coat issue but this time it was Victoria who left without her coat! Okay. I don't know how she was not freezing.
Also if you have ever wondered what happens to Kate's coat when she does take it off inside (I always thought it would be put away somewhere), you can see Catherine Quinn holding it in a video posted by Rebecca English on twitter.

  16. I'm simply confused by the choice of hosiery, handbag, and shoes with that coat. Dark-tinted hosiery just screams "grandma" to me! To coordinate those accessories, I would have chosen the Hobbes Celeste Coat instead.

    1. Ditto Ms. Cuppa on Kate’s accessories. She seems to be stepping out of her comfort zone but not in the right direction IMHO. The dress is absolutely gorgeous. Love the color and fabric! But the dark hosiery and maroon chunky heels don’t compliment the dress in style or color. The subtle colored threading on the dress could be complimented with a more delicate cream color or toned shoe that reflects some of the color of the dress. A kitten heel may work; although Kate likes her sky high footwear. I have noticed that her gait is more stringent and awkward when she wears 4+ inch heels. Even the sturdy block heels must be hard to navigate in during a pregnancy if the event requires extended periods of walking. But I must say I’m always impressed by her ability to consistently balance and walk in heels in so many situations, ie: descending the stairs of an airplane while holding sweet Charlotte.. For me, it would be like walking a tightrope!

    2. The coat, yes. But with the dress, I think they work beautifully! The undertones of the dress are warm and rich and so the burgundy shoes/purse work perfectly. The hose, I could go either way with. I can see your point, but it's not enough of a distraction to be a problem for me.

  21. Love, love, love the coat. This bold houndstooth print was on my wishlist. The dress is simple and elegant. Classy! Just not nuts about the burgundy shoes and bag with red.

And forgive me but it looks as though Victoria's clothes are wearing her, and not the other way around. If I'm not mistaken I believe Sophie has a similar coat.

  22. Love the dress, now the accessories match well, maybe she should have chosen a different coat

  23. I like everything about the coat and dress. But brown sheer stockings with burgundy shoes? I don't know any woman who looks good with that look, ever.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I love Kate's look today! I like houndstooth. I'm thinking I'd like it even better if it had been a bit smaller pattern but nonetheless, it's a win for me. And that dress, really lovely. Oh, and her hair, just picture perfect! Well done Amanda Cook Tucker. I agree that it's nice to see Kate carrying something other than a clutch. Variety is the spice of life, or so they say.

  25. Kate is a gorgeous woman, and wears many colors very well. Red is def a good color on her. I think a stylist should have been used with the dress/coat/accessory combo, tho. Hair seems flat today - maybe a nice style to keep hair out of her face in the wind would have been more appropriate. Love the coat & dress separately.

  26. Love the coat. After last night's dress (which I didn't like), happy to see her in this. But I'm with everyone else on the burgundy purse and shoes. Not working together IMO. Her hair looks lovely too!

  31. LOVE that coat! Just skimming through the post now and I’ll read it fully this evening but I wanted to “stop by” and say hello and great reporting so far, Charlotte! I haven’t gotten a chance to comment on the other posts yet..hopefully I’ll have some time this evening.

I do have a couple of questions that you all might be able to help me with.

    1. In one of the above photos, Kate is sitting with her legs crossed. I thought that when royals are making official appearances, it’s not customary to do that?

I still have a lot to learn about royal families/customs so I could be wrong

    2. I’ve never seen Kate with nail polish, except for maybe her wedding and then it was neutral. Is this also a thing?

Can’t wait to check back later today and read the posts and comments!

    3. Hi Natalie :) you're correcf, usually it isn't customary to sit with legs crossed, but it happens. It's so the dress doesn't ride up/ you don't see too much thigh., that's why you'll see ankles crossed, or knees glued together lol as for nail polish, hard to say, as eugine and Zara have worn reds, and other royal families do, but I'm sure each family's rules are different. Kate usually does wear subtle polish, but there is many time s I have noticed she's wore none at all. Not even just clear, Even to a fancy event. It doesn't look like she has any on today, but the pictures are pretty far away from her hands!

  32. Love love love this coat! Not sure about these particular accessories with it, but they do look amazing with the dress. This is the kind of fashion “risk” I can get behind. A little quirky, cool, modern, stylish. She looks great!
Also love Victoria’s whole look. Maybe not 100% sold on the suit’s colour, but it too had that more modern twist on a classic.

    1. I agree - why can't she pair accessories from the same color family and they are striking with the dress. IMHO, they don't "clash". Why not be a little edgy.

Victoria's look is very on trend. That style coat I see all the time. It's very in and at the same time classic.

  37. My thought about the entire outfit:Like the coat as it has an interesting pattern. But would have accessorized with thick black thights, black shoes and bag. For me the burgundy shoes and bag donˋt match with the red/white coat.

  38. Hummm. I love Catherine Walker designs for the most part. I really like the coat today although I am rarely a fan of houndstooth. Like many today I don’t like the color of the bag and shoes with the coat. Those colors don’t play well together with this outfit. That color combination hints at that staid, schoolmarmish vibe of a lot of things Kate has chosen to wear in the past, including that dress from last night. She is young and beautiful. I don’t understand where she is getting that staid, school-marmish vibe. But, the work they are promoting there, and the political liaisons formed, help to overcome, somewhat, the curious fashion choices.

Victoria’s outfit was strange again. Didn’t like it at all. And as rf said, her clothes were wearing her. The “style” was,uh, I don’t know. The fabrics weren’t the best. The tailoring wasn’t either. The colors, again, were spring colors. The designer in me has been so disappointed in some of this outfits. They have been like fingernails on a chalkboard to me.

I guess, having been raised there, the cold doesn’t bother Victoria as much as it would others. That is the only explanation I have for her wearing no coat (scarf, hat, gloves, etc.) while outside. I get cold just thinking about it. It is only 57 degrees here this morning and I am bundled up.

Love the Karolinska Institute. I have read some of research efforts from a Doctor there and it was amazing.

    1. Both of us immediately noticed the missing coat again, surfer girl ;) Lol. Yesterday it was Kate and now it's Victoria, what a funny coincidence!
I think it depends on the person as well as what you're used to. Where I live it gets pretty cold in winter and I'm used to it but still get cold easily and am all bundled up during winter. I know people who are the same and then there are people who never seem to get cold at all.

    2. Agreed. The navy would have been red, white and blue - here is the US I try to avoid that sometimes. And those of you the UK have the same situation.

If she had worn the Navy - was it Carolina Herrera for the service? - coat from before that would have looked lovely as well.

  41. A total win for me!! I love the coat, houndstooth is such a classic but fun print and the red gives a great pop of color on a cloudy day. The dress is terrific. I am also a fan of tweed. The texture and color with the warm undertones are terrific. The accessories, while not perfect with the coat are perfect with the dress. And I adore the earrings. Hopefully those will go into the regular rotation for her.

I am glad to see she and William explored/scheduled engagements that connected with mental health. It's a global crisis and so learning and connecting with other global leaders on what works and what problems they have had can only serve to better equip William and Kate.

    2. rf.😊 The accessories did work beautifully with the dress. :)
(For a woman in her position the accessories should have been planned to go with both the coat and the dress though (that’s common sense, yeh?), especially for a PR tour. She obviously purchased both the coat and the dress for the tour so it wasn’t a throw in. Why the oversights? She is representing the Monarchy. She can afford to get it right. :)
And, tour or no tour, she is basically on PR duty most always. Big oversight or lack of “stylist” expertise. Something is just not right about this whole styling thing for years and I just don’t know yet what that is. Why is Kate choosing to wear the things she’s worn. Surely she has the final say. Does she not exert her authority there? Many of her clothes choices don’t make good sense. And it doesn’t have to be, shouldn’t be, that way. Hopefully she will start fully caring about it. She has before in her earlier years. To me it is blatantly obvious that Kate needs a higher caliber professional as a stylist asap. She has Catherine Quinn, now she needs an expert like that to bring it to wholeness by choosing a stylist of that caliber of expertise.)
Why fill one position with an expert and not the other? They are both parts of the same whole.

    3. I agree surfer girl. Kate nailed it out of the park in her early years (2011 - 2013-ish). I'm not sure what's happened since.

    4. Hmm. I think we're going to have to disagree here surfer girl. I 100% understand and stand by those that don't like particular outfits but I don't understand how every single time someone doesn't like her outfit they jump right from "hmm, this is not my preference" to "she's not representing the monarchy well." It's just a style preference! To me, she is one of the only royals in the world who consistently gets it right and appropriate every. single. time. Your preference of styling has nothing to do with her lack of PR skills or her doing the job well. I don't mean to sound harsh or too "lenient" on Kate but my goodness, fashion does not equal doing the job right or wrong!

    5. Anon 17:57, I have to agree. I personally like the burgundy accessories with both the coat & the dress. I only would have thought to put black with the coat. This burgundy look adds a subtle warmth to the coat & dress that would be different with black. Like you say, it's a personal style preference. I too agree that she's been a success, whether or not we love or dislike any personal fashion choice on any given day. This is just what I believe. :)

      Delete
    6. I agree with every word, 17:57. She gets it right! What she wears might not always be what I would wear, why should it be, but she always is appropriate, and always looks lovely. As for burgundy and red, I wouldn't have done it but it looks great and inspires me to try something different. Anyway, she is not a star in need of a stylist she is a very elegant member of the RF.

      Delete
    7. You guys. Dressing is only one component of PR. An important one but one nonetheless. The other parts she has mastered. But the part that most people will notice most in the pages of history are the photos. And, again. Kate most often doesn’t wear such ridiculous clothes but often needs just a little (professional) tweeting. :) That would go a long way for polish and consistency.

  43. I love the houndstooth coat. I don't like the pairing of it with the burgundy/brown shoes, hosiery, and purse; however, they looked great with the lovely McQueen dress. One can never have too much boucle' tweed!

I'm trying to figure out why I liked the Erdem dress when it was universally panned. I'm not fashion forward, and I hated the blue/red flowered Erdem. I looked at the photos again, and Kate just looks so regal standing there. It was a completely unexpected choice and made Victoria (and the other guests) look rather dull in comparison. I bet it was gorgeous in person.

Tours are fun, and I'm enjoying reading everyone's comments!

Also, if the future Queen of Sweden can wear a pantsuit then so can you, Kate! C'mon Kate, wear trousers! What a LOVELY picture of the princesses greeting each other. I think they all really like each other. How cute!

    The McQueen dress is wonderful!

A red and white houndstooth coat with burgundy shoes, gloves and handbag do NOT go together. Come on! This is where a stylist needs to bring their A game. This is not A game. That coat with red or black would have been a show stopper. This outfit reminds me of the pink ball gown with the poofy sleeves and RED jewelry.

  49. After being a long time lurker, I thought I might start to comment.
I think Catherine's tights/hosiery are burgundy and not brown so match her accessories perfectly. Over here in Ireland I have noticed these coloured but sheer tights more and more. I really like them for the colder months. They make a more elegant change from the black opaque tights of recent years. They look perfect with the cream dress. We also have to realise that Catherine is well into her 3rd pregnancy and like the rest of us may need support hosiery. I think these are a stylish compromise.
As someone else said. I think the coat is just that...a coat! She is going to be indoors for most of this event so everything was styled around the dress.
Just like Victoria's boots and coat yesterday. They served the purpose to get from A to B outside. Beautiful as they were they didn't match her dress.

    4. Rebecca, I would be interested to know if there are elements of Victoria's style that are very Swedish and if so, which ones? I'm asking because I always see royal ladies' outfits as a mixture of expectation, personal style and the 'country's style' if you will. I know of course that not everyone in a country dresses alike but there are usually elements that are typical for a country's fashion.

I think Kate just wouldn't be comfortable in some of the styles Victoria wears. Victoria, to me, is either spectacular or train wreck in a lot of her sartorial choices. She takes fashion risks with her choices but that just isn't Kate. Kate is usually somewhat predictable in her choices which means she is usually perfectly appropriate and not grabbing too much attention from the cause she is there for or from the future king, etc. Victoria, on the other hand, is the future monarch and doesn't have to worry about being visible but not too visible. Hopefully what I am saying here made sense. I guess it comes down to me thinking they both dress to their positions, and personalities, very well.

I noticed that the smiles I saw from Kate are those naturally animated facial expressions that we usually only see between Kate & friends & family. She's always gracious & smiley on tours, but this is like a Tour with Friends! If you think about it, Will & Kate have a tight knit group of close friends & many are aristocratic. However, they have never had close friends that are from another Royal Family & Monarchs in waiting! They can share so much that they just couldn't ever really explain with their other close friends. I love seeing William & Victoria interact! Wouldn’t it be awesome if all the children of leaders worldwide met to play together for a day every three months or so. 72. Although sometimes I wish I had a royal budget (for Charlene's recent cashmere coat!) and I did wear a pearl choker and pale tights during the Diana days, I've never been inclined to try to replicate Kate - until today.

I was happy to be in sunny Lisbon rather than snowy Stockholm. We were on a street with shops full of tat when I spotted something. "what?" Leo asked. "That top! It looks like the gown Kate wore yesterday!" "You mean the one that made her look like a sofa?" Leo said. (He didn't like Victoria's outfit either.) But that's exactly what it looked like - mustard yellow with flowers and floppy sleeves for all of ten Euros. It will look hideous on me (and the shop assistant tried to convince me to choose a better colourway) but I couldn't resist for it will remind me of Kate's tour every time I wear it to walk the spaniels this summer - and there are worse things then remembering a nice tour, if not so far the most successful one for my tastes fashion-wise. So if anyone else wants to copy Kate - there's a top out there that comes close.

I'm not fond of red and white houndstooth either, nor wild about the Macqueen dress - so I'm holding out hopes for Norway and just possibly a glimpse of the diplomatic reception gown. In the meantime, I loved seeing Victoria's adorable little ones.

    1. Whilst I loved many things Diana wore, like Kate, there were also outfits I didn't like at all. That insane houndstooth suit with the mismatched hat was one of them.

One evening Erdem per tour would normally be fine with me - but I do quite like the blue Kate is wearing tonight, except for the Guinevere sleeves.

Quite apart from fashions, it has been a wonderful tour seeing these two royal couples so close in age, with children close together, interacting. I hope it will prove to be a lasting friendship - connections with Europe will be more important than ever. Likewise, I was pleased to see Kate's visit with the young Luxembourg couple earlier in the year. And this tour seems like a well-planned set of engagements, YAM will have been particularly important.

Fashion-wise, I've never minded Kate's conservative look - to me tasteful and elegant is what makes a royal - why Letizia and Mary tend to be my fashion favourites rather than Maxima and Mette-Marit. There have been times I've loved adventurous looks from Kate - such as in Poland and Germany but if she doesn't step too far out, that's fine with me.

(But she can look splendid in simpler dresses too, like here: https://kungligamodebloggen.svenskdam.se/wp-content/uploads/sites/11/2015/06/Victoria2.png)

I think it's fascinating watching William and Victoria interact, knowing that she would have been a likely candidate for him to marry, had arranged royal weddings still been a thing. She's a descendant of Queen Victoria, his age (and I guess wouldn't have been heir to the throne if society had still been that old-fashioned, seeing as she has a brother). It would have been her or her sister, I think, there aren't that many princesses in his generation; there's Theodora of Greece and Denmark, I guess...am I missing someone? Then again, maybe they would have waited and married him to one of the teenage princesses of Spain or Belgium. Yikes. I am glad he was allowed to chose for himself.

Lastly, a picture of Victoria with her hair let down, to show it does happen! :) https://bakomkulisserna.svenskdam.se/wp-content/uploads/sites/6/2010/09/victoria-3.jpg

    3. I don't think so Jen, she is a Bernardotte descendant, Napoleon Bonaparte put them in the throne after the former dinasty was extincted....In fact they are not royal descendants...

    4. Also her mother Silvia was a commoner, so....it was terrible at that time...

    5. Actually, Victoria's maternal grandmother is from Brazil...

    6. Not his age either, 5 years older, born in July of 1977.

    7. Actually, she is a descendant of Queen Victoria's. The current King's grandmother, Princess Victoria's great-grandmother Princess Margaret of Connaught was Queen Victoria's granddaughter. This makes Queen Victoria Princess Victoria's great-great-great-grandmother.
And Princess Victoria's grandmother, Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha was Princess Victoria's great-granddaughter.

    9. Hi Everyone - I just did a couple of minute’s research, and found out from Wikipedia that indeed, on her father’s side, Crown Princess Victoria is descended from Prince Arthur, Queen Victoria’s 3rd son, as well as Prince Leopold, Queen Victoria’s last child. If I have the generations correct, she would be Queen Victoria’s great-great-great granddaughter.
Charlotte, what a Trojan you are! I don’t know how you keep up with everything, but I am so grateful that you do! I am in the middle of a huge graphics job and every once in a while I have to take a break, so I set my alarm and come on here for a half-hour to see what’s been happening. Love the Duchess’s look today and wouldn’t change a thing! So lovely to see the two couples getting along so well!

    10. To Anonymous: with "teenage princesses" I was referring to Princess Elisabeth of Belgium, born in 2001, and Princess Leonor of Spain, born in 2005. But you were right as to her not being a teenager - she hasn't turned 13 yet! I was trying to get into the mindset of old-fashioned royal traditions, which dictated princesses married very young, but I can see it is turning out quite creepy!

Caroline, LeahMaria: Thank you! Those were the connections to Queen Victoria I was referring to. :)

  81. Kate's hair and silhouette are beautiful!! Love all of the elements of her clothes and didn't know at first if I liked them all together, but, once I saw the dress by itself with the accessories, I looked at them as a neutral, and it made more sense to me. Love, love the cream dress, and the red houndstooth coat is a beautiful piece, somewhat reminiscent of Swedish knitwear!! Loved Victoria's color pallette, and I covet her accessories (boots, purse :)). Victoria and Daniel's children are adorable and I loved how she had them dressed. Some of my favorite pictures of Diana were when she traveled to Spain for a summer visit with her boys; would love to see William and Kate take their children on a Swedish summer vacation and play date and see these two couples and their families get together informally. cc

  82. P.S. - Love the glimpse into Victoria and Daniel's home, very elegant and I want that swan painting!!! cc

  83. Charlotte, wonderful post. It’s exciting to read what’s happening and looking at the pictures. The Duchess of Cambridge looked fantastic today. Someone mentioned the Duchess of Cambridge channeling the fashion style of Jackie Kennedy Onassis; let me tell you, that’s GOOD COMPANY. No one has done it better than Jackie O. My opinion, of course😊. Thanks again, Charlotte.

  84. This look is so refreshing after last night's disaster!! The white dress is perfection, even though it is a touch matronly somehow? I think it's the material. The color and cut, however, are gorgeous. My only other qualm is that I don't like the brown tights with maroon accessories.

  85. Today was even better than Yesterday. The outfits, the tenderness towards one another. Loved Prince William's speech. Brilliant! XOXOXOXOXO

  87. William’s speeches are getting more and more interesting. In fact, I realized the first thing to do after reading Charlottes posts, is read his speeches to know how it is all connected, and also find a profile summary of the countries they visit.

  88. Here's another reason for Catherine's bold color choices in Sweden. CP Victoria suffers from facial blindness. Good on Catherine and her team to dress accordingly.
