A Very Royal Affair: The Cambridges are Joined by Swedish Royals for Afternoon of Engagements!

Following a fun-filled morning in snowy Stockholm, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge travelled to the Royal Palace of Stockholm where they attended a luncheon hosted by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia to officially welcome the couple to Sweden.

Approximately fifteen members of the Swedish Royal Court attended the luncheon, including Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel. Victoria and Daniel will be accompanying William and Kate on a series of engagements during their remaining time in Sweden. The two royal couples have much in common.Victoria is the heir apparent to the Swedish throne, she and her husband Daniel are a similar age to the Cambridges and parents to Estelle, 5, and Oscar who is two in March.

Since William and Kate got married, we've often discussed how interesting it would be to see them meeting the young Swedish royals. It's important for the couple, as the future King and Queen to build relationships with their royal counterparts. Communication Secretary Jason Knauf said "From our perspective, it's a chance for Their Royal Highnesses to build a strong relationship with the Royal families of each country, and particularly the Royals of their generation who they will know throughout their lives. Those close relationships between countries on a people-to-people level are something that Royal visits are particularly good at highlighting.”

Hannah Furness elaborated on this in her story for The Telegraph:

'As the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge embark on their tour of Sweden and Norway this week, they will aim not just to perform their formal public duties, but finally forge personal relationships with some of their closest European counterparts. The visit will see them join a glamorous set of young European Royalty, meeting the generation they will grow up alongside until each eventually inherit the throne.
It will be the first official trip to either country for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, and their first opportunity to spend time with their Royal counterparts. Although Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel were at their 2011 Westminster Abbey wedding among 1,900 guests, it is understood the Duke and Duchess do not know either well.
They are likely to bond over their families: the Swedish Royal couple have two young children, while the Norwegians have three. Each are widely photographed in their home countries, with glossy magazines around the world poring over glamorous photographs of the two princesses with much the same interest as those of the Duchess of Cambridge. Both Scandinavian women have enjoyed an extensive education. Victoria, 40, studied subjects including political science, conflict resolution and international peace-building at Yale, completed work programmes around the world, speaks four languages fluently and has completed basic military training.'

The Royal Palace of Stockholm is the official residence of the Swedish monarch.

The combination of royal residence, workplace and culture-historical monument open year round to visitors makes the Royal Palace of Stockholm unique amongst Europe's royal residences. The palace was built in baroque style by the architect Nicodemus Tessin and is formed as a Roman palace. It has more than 600 rooms divided between seven floors with a state apartment facing the city and smaller living rooms facing the inner courtyard. The palace contains many interesting things to see. In addition to the Royal Apartments there are three museums steeped in regal history: the Treasury with the regalia, the Tre Kronor Museum that portrays the palaces medieval history and Gustav III's Museum of Antiquities.

After lunch, Victoria and Daniel joined William and Kate for a walk through the picturesque cobbled streets of Stockholm from the Royal Palace to the Nobel Museum.

A video from KP.

A lovely photo of the royals leaving the Palace.

A great shot of Victoria and William - a future Queen and King.

The royals had an opportunity to meet members of the Swedish public in Stortorget, the oldest square in Stockholm, and a charming public space outside the Nobel Museum.

Crowds waited for hours to meet the royals.

The Duchess received a selection of flowers.

As did Princess Victoria.

It was a particularly exciting day for two of our readers who saw the royals and kindly shared photos.

Reader Luisa shared the following from the walkabout "We were a bit afraid that the royals wouldn‘t come over to our side anymore because they already spent so much time on the other side. But at the end all of them came over and she even shook my hand! I was so excited. She looks exactly like in the pictures and was very elegant and kind. A woman said she had a beautiful coat on and she said she found it difficult to find something to wear. She was very thankful to the woman next to me who gave her flowers. William shared a little joke with a small boy whose name is also William. They spent about thirty minutes meeting people before going inside."

Karolina was also there and shared her snap via email.

People reports:

'Karin Wahlgren, 75, from the suburb of Järfälla, handed William a special glove to wipe their dog Lupo’s paws with. “You hold the dog with one hand and use the glove on the other to wipe him,” she told PEOPLE. “He said, ‘The dog always comes in with dirty paws, so it will come in handy.’ Wahlgren was also awestruck by Kate, who she says “was more beautiful in reality than I imagined she’d be. She has a sort of radiance.”
Staci Cunningham, another member of the crowd, told PEOPLE that she chatted about the bitter Swedish cold with William and Kate. “We asked them if they were enjoying their visit,” she said. “They are. They were friendly and sweet. It was kind of them to take so much time in the cold.” Also among the crowd was math teacher Niklas Schild, 33, who told William that he’s planning to travel to Windsor to join the festivities surrounding Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle on May 19. “William told me, ‘You’ll be very welcome — it will be a very happy day’,” said Niklas.
The couple also chatted to British 7-year-olds Tia Hart and Eva Rouse, who live in Stockholm. “Kate asked us if we like living here and what kind of things we like doing,” said Tia. “We said we like tobogganing and she said that her children would love that too.”

A great photo of Kate after the walkabout.

The foursome posed for photos before heading inside.

A closer look at the historic square.

A wave from the Duchess.

The royals met a number of Nobel Laureates, and heard more from the Museum's curator about Science in Sweden and the Nobel Laureate system. Princess Victoria wore a floral print dress and coat by Swedish designer Ida Sjostedt today

More from Richard Palmer:

'British Nobel Laureate Professor Duncan Haldane, a Princeton physicist, told the Duke of Cambridge today: “You don’t have to be a genius to get a Nobel Prize.” Professor Haldane made William laugh, telling him the secret of winning a Nobel Prize: “You have to be in the right place to see something strange. All the really interesting discoveries were made by accident.”

The Duke and Duchess leaving the museum.

William and Kate's next stop was ArkDes, Sweden’s national centre for architecture and design.

The couple attended an event celebrating architectural collaboration and the best of Swedish design, from the most iconic and global furniture brands, to up-and-coming homeware designers with new takes on sustainable furnishings.

William meeting guests.

William and Kate met representatives from IKEA. Founder Ingvar Kamprad died earlier this week. During a chat with head of design Marcus Engman they revealed, they have IKEA pieces for the children's rooms.

They also tried out chairs.

The Duchess wore a new bespoke Catherine Walker coat and dress. In our recent polls, you awarded the brand the title of 'Kate's Best Designer of 2017'. What do you think of Kate's Walker pieces today?

Kate's dress appears to be a customized version of the Bea dress. The luxurious double wool crêpe coatdress is tailored with a saddle shoulder, funnel neck, fitted sleeves and swirling skirt.

Catherine Walker

Kate accessorised her coat with a faux fur collar and faux fur cuffs from Troy London. The brand was set up by Rosie Van Cutsem and her sister Lucia Ruck Keene. Rosie's husband William Van Cutsem is one of Prince William's oldest friends and godfather to Prince George.

Kate wore her Peruvian Connection Vallnord Alpaca Fur Hat. The Duchess last wore the hat on Christmas Day.

Kate carried a gorgeous new Mulberry handbag. Middleton Maven noted it is their Mini Seaton style. It's available at House of Fraser. A larger version of the bag is in stock on the Mulberry website.

Mulberry

It is described as:

"It is described as The Mini Seaton's sleek lines and streamlined silhouette are sized down from the regular style, ideal for a day-evening bag or to pack away for a trip. Featuring equestrian-inspired detailing such as raw-edged construction and the signature Rider's Lock, the Mini Seaton can be worn on its adjustable shoulder strap or carried by its neat top handle.

A closer look at Kate's bag.

Kate accessorised with her Kiki McDonough Special Edition Green Tourmaline, Green Amethyst and Diamond Earrings. They were specially made to celebrate the birth of Princess Charlotte.

And for her choice of footwear, Kate chose her Tod's Suede Pumps and briefly changed into her Russell & Bromley Half N Half boots for the walk.

This evening, The Duke and Duchess will attend a black tie dinner at the Residence of the British Ambassador, attended by members of the Swedish Royal Family, and representatives from government, and popular culture.

So nice to see the royals together! Look at that look between Kate and Victoria. They are both very "bubbly", chatty and smiley personalities so I think they will have alot of fun!

Everyone look pretty and appropriate within their own styles.

    3. I agree Rebecca, Kate and Victoria look like they could have a lot to talk about. Victoria is beautiful and I like her dress.

Kate looks lovely in Catherine Walker. Elegant, sophisticated and I simply love this shade of green on her! It reminds me of the D&G dress she wore in Canada. I can see Kate getting a lot of use out of it, lovely style and fit.

Can't wait to see her look for tonight!

  5. That dress is dull. Could really have used a brooch or necklace to liven it up a bit.

    1. I agree, something from the royal collection could have made the difference. Back to basics.

    2. Yes, she looks really plain next to everyone else. Nice dress but boring.

      Delete
    3. Hmmm, I agree as well. A longish necklace would have brightened it up no end and broken up the solid green. I'm assuming that the matching coat will jazz it up a bit for the walkabout.

Thinking laterally - I wonder if this outfit will still fit her for St Patrick's Day?

      Delete
    4. Yeah, the dress is pretty but plain. She just needed to accessorize well and this would have gone from ordinary to something special. Nice photograph though.

    5. Kate looks lovely- but I agree! A brooch would have been great here.

Apologize for Kate but this time totally agree. The dress seems to be “empty”. A brooch would have been perfect!

    7. The plainness of the dress made more sense to me after I saw her coat. I think the coat was meant to be the showpiece of that ensemble. It’s absolutely beautiful!

    8. I agree - next to Victoria, this dress is as bland as can be. Victoria really knows how to dres And clearly enjoys fashion.

    9. Queen of the South30 January 2018 at 17:20

Just to bring in an opposing opinion, I think a brooch would look really out of place. The dress has quite a young modern feel which would clash with a brooch.

      Delete
    10. Less is more, true but it can't be "lesser" than this.

      Delete
    11. Queen of the South, I have to agree. When I first saw the dress without the coat I immediately thought that it looked like it needed a brooch or something but you are right. The Queen would have worn the brooch on her coat and then transferred it to the dress when she removed the coat, That's perfectly fine for the Queen but we cannot expect Kate to dress like a 91 year old woman. Her Maj does rock those brooches, though.

      Delete
    12. It looks from several pictures that the dress hem is shorter in the front and longer in the back. The dart tailoring on both the dress and coat, which is lovely, seems to be poorly constructed. The model's dress has refined and smooth tailoring. I'm not a fan of the dress length as it looks to me like the dress shrunk. Tailoring is really important when you are constantly being photographed.

      Delete
    13. I agree. The dress has a modern and minimalistic feel to it. And it should be judged right along with the coat. US Reader said it best.

But look at the bright side ... at least she took her coat off. :-)

Personally, I'm cheering that it's another CW design.

  6. I was excited to wake up this morning before heading to work and see some photos of Kate and William watching bandy hockey--and getting a few shots on goal in too. Gorgeous smiles, they seemed the perfect guests. And thanks for this photo Charlotte, and for all that you do. I agree that a brooch would have been good on this dress but the smiles and the smiling look between Kate and Victoria, IMO, make up for any sartorial shortcomings. I look forward to seeing more photos Charlotte although I may not be able to comment as I will only be on my phone.

    1. you are not the lone ranger. i noticed it right away. i was so hoping she would avoid the short dresses on this tour, not as short as some she wears while pregnant, but in my opinion, very un royl while working. the look between her and the princess is lovely, but these picture are historical and i feel Kate really dropped the ball in stubornly clinging to school girl clothing

      Delete
    2. If it were any shorter I would join you, Lone Ranger ;)
But IMO this length is fine as it hits right at the top of the knee, even with the ‘bump.’ And she seems to prefer shorter hemlines when pregnant. Also, just my opinion again but she may have been going for a simpler look for the luncheon so as not to outshine their hosts, although a necklace would’ve been a nice addition. Btw, Victoria’s dress is lovely.

      Delete
    3. How can a dress hitting just above the knee can be considered too short?

      Delete
    4. Oh, interesting. I think it is completely appropriate in length.

She looks appropriate to me. And I like that she chose a simple look to avoid commentary and comparisons with her hosts. She still looks lovely as always.

    9. I honestly don't see an issue with the length of Kate's dress. Ironically, had she worn Victoria's, me thinks she would be encouraged to dress her age and not wear granny's curtains. :-)

  9. I'm not a fan of the dress and am not surprised to find that it is Catherine Walker who, despite the improvement this past year, continues to produce a lot of boring clothes. No biggie, just a luncheon with other royals, pass the rolls please ;-) Love that look between them! Crown Princess Victoria is one of my favorite royals; she looks lovely.

I'm realizing how much Kate & Princess Madeleine have in common, too! Both pregnant with their third child, both due this spring, both have a boy & a girl, & doesn't Princess Madeleine live in London part of the time?

I just adore these two royal families!

I'm hoping they will be an elegant coat to go with this then (being a Catherine Walker) with some flashy buttons or details to lift the outfit. Nice to see them meeting some locals and hanging out with Daniel and Victoria. It was fun to see in the video how chatty both William and Kate are. They got a bit behind :P Cute.

Kate looks super elegant! Good choice to have a warm hat on, I don't know how the others didn't! Although many people seem to do it. I always freeze my ears of if I don't have a hat or at least my hair out! Either way, a perfectly elegant and warm maternity coat. She looks retro in the look, like something Queen Elizabeth might have worn when pregnant as a young woman. And I mean that in the best possible way! Super elegant!

  17. So I guess Kate CAN change fashion styles as it seems the tiny clutches are gone for good and solid purses/handbags are now her thing. I like it. For one she can probably fit much more essentials in the bigger bags. And second of all her always carrying that clutch in front of her when she stood put a barrier between her and everyone else. The handbag allows for a handshake from being blocked by the clutch.

Sorry but why is Kate leaving the museum without her coat on? We've much discussed her keeping her coat on on several occasions but somehow this is even weirder. Why would she leave without her coat, especially when it is cold outside and she has made it a point to stay warm up until now? I

She removed the coat and changed shoes so I assume she changed in a room inside and they would be driven off so no coat needed.

    2. I wondered that also, Caroline.😊 It made me feel chilly just knowing she was in minus 1 degree weather with a mere layer of dress over her. Baby was probably going, “mmmmoommmm”. :)

    3. Yes, you're right, Rebecca but even if I was just walking to the car and then from the car to another place, I would always put on my coat in winter. It's not an important issue obviously ;) I just find it strange because I've noticed that during her pregnancies she makes a special effort to always stay warm: more boots, thicker tights, furry hats etc but then she walks outside without her coat on in rather cold weather. I give up on trying to understand when she feels cold and when warm. It is not meant as criticism but she wore a coat during one of the hottest days of summer in Berlin, she often keeps her coat on inside and then there is this: walking out without her coat when it's cold. I just don't understand ;)

    4. Did William wear his coat? I think since they both were without coats, there must have been a reason.

  26. Love, love, love Kate’s coat, hat, earrings and boots.
My kind of outfit, lol. Love it. Definitely at the top of my favorites list.
I thought the dress was pretty except for the positioning of the darts and the dress needed more accessorizing although with what I don’t know. With her substantial earrings, more accessorizing would have to have been done thoughtfully. A brooch perhaps? (Remember. Lepley had brooches play a prominent role in her designs. They may be making a comeback.)

I enlarged the photo and, no offense, but I don’t think Kate was looking at Victoria at all. She was looking at the King while he was speaking.

I hope Kate’s boots had good tread as it looked very icy as they walked in the video. I wish the Prince had taken Kate’s arm. And William Victoria’s. Some cultures are more reserved than others. Are Scandinavian cultures reserved or no?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't want to comment on how reserved Scandinavian cultures are in general as I'm not Scandinavian and don't presume to know all about that but from what I've seen, the Swedish royal family touch each other a lot more than the British royals do. And when they have banquets, they always walk out arm in arm with each other or their guests, whereas in Britain, they walk out next to each other but don't touch (from what I've seen).

      Delete
  27. Lovely to see both couples enjoying each others company. I've often thought why W&K haven't visited the European royals more often and I appreciate that Sophie and Edward get to do the weddings and represents the Queen, Hopefully this maybe the start of more interaction between the families.

The outdoor look, coat hat and bag, is beautiful and makes up for the simple dress underneath. I get that she wanted to co-ordinate both dress and coat but I think there should have been some detailing on the dress, stitch work or simple button work to lift it or as suggested some bling/ something like the Cartier Trinity Long Station Necklace? But maybe she was being gracious/modest and not wanting to outshine her guests.

  29. When I look at the luncheon photo of the royals, I find Queen Silvia and Catherine to be dressed to the occasion. Catherine looks chic, although like many others I would have preferred some jewelry. The length of the dress is perfect and in proportion. Victoria on the other hand appears the outlier. Her dress is too long, fussy and perhaps better worn at a garden party. Her updo is too stiff. This look is something I want Catherine to stay far away from. In the walkabout Catherine's hat and coat are a classic. I hope we see them again. So flattering.

Victoria often goes for these frilly looks and her bun is her go to. They are both appropriate, although a smidge mis-matched.

      Delete
    2. That's how Victoria always wears her hair. A really tightly slicked back updo. I don't think it's very flattering, but she seems to like it!

      Delete
    3. I feel that Victoria is not the kind of person who cares how she looks. She gets fulfilment through other things.

      Delete
    4. Personally, I think it looks too severe, she could do with a better updo but I think she does it because it's something that her hairdresser can do in the morning and then it stays in place for the whole day, so she doesn't have to worry about her hair. You have to remember that unlike the other royal women many of us are watching (Kate, Letizia, Mary etc) she is not a consort, she is the heir and her workload reflects that. She is the only female heir of her generation but if you look at the female monarchs of the older generation - Elizabeth, Margrethe and formerly Beatrix - they all have a hairstyle that stays in place.
I think cutting her hair to shoulder length and wearing it straight could work similarly and be a more modern take on this but it's her choice. And I think she and her husband are well-matched, because he always slicks back his hair too :)

  31. Dark green always looks so good on Kate, but I agree that the dress is a little plain on its own. Not too short, but close. I love her coat and despise the hat. It looks nice and warm, but I just can't bring myself to like those big fluff-poof hats. I'm sure Kate will wear this dress/coat combo again for St. Patrick's day.

Getting to see William and Kate interact with other royals their age is fascinating. Catching a glimpse of the inside of the Swedish palace is fun, too.

  32. Also, Victoria must be used to the weather to be able to pull of sheer sleeves! I'm cold just looking at them.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Charlotte, LOVE the new banner!! I liked the morning outfit a lot - so fun and cozy. The dress - I bet it is one of those items that looks better moving than photographed. The green is pretty but doesn't pop. Her Cartier trinity necklace would have looked awesome with it, although I know that would probably be too flashy for this type of event.

    ReplyDelete
  34. This looks much better now, with the coat over the top of the dress and the furry hat, and I just love the handbag instead of a clutch (the Meghan effect perhaps?).

Also, has anyone identified Crown Princess Victoria's coat yet? I love that! She's looked really gorgeous today so far.

I've never really been able to put my finger on why, but I've always had a soft spot for the Swedish royals too, Anon in Colorado. They manage to strike a really lovely balance between regal formality and normality with their regular photos of their children. I'm always thrilled when another picture appears! It's a shame we won't get to see George and Charlotte with Estelle and Oscar this time around - that would have been priceless!

I love the Swedish royals as well! They seem like such a warm and loving family and like they all get on really well :) I especially love Victoria and Daniel. I like Victoria's outfits and she appears to be very intelligent and hard working. Her husband seems to be very nice and comfortable with his supporting role, which isn't always the case with the husbands of powerful women, so I applaud him for that. I also love Madeleine who always seems so princessy. She once curtsied to the pope while pregnant, in heels and holding her young daughter and I just thought 'Wow, that's a princess!'

    2. The coat, boots, hat, handbag are stunning. Then....she took off her coat 😔
Wonder who was charged with carrying her “indoor” shoes?

I never thought about how these two royal couples have so much in common! What a fun trip for all of them. I imagine it will be one that creates a great friendship. Victoria seems so proud to show off her country and I think that is so wonderful.

And, oooooooohhhhhhhhkaaaay, the hat looks good for the outfit. (You all know I hate that hat).

I must say the snow is magical. In California it was 87 degrees yesterday. Winter has been so non-existent that even the chickens are confused and laying eggs. So to see snowfall...mmmmmmmnnnnn get out the cocoa and marshmallows.

  37. Suzanne.😊 I agree. Victoria’s dress was just a wall of flowers and took away definition of design lines. The dress was more of a summer garden party dress for sure. Perhaps if the sleeves had been more form-fitting and not flouncy, it’s design would be better. The bodice and skirt were flouncy enough. Her hair so tight with such a voluminous flouncy dress didn’t go with the outfit.

Her resume’ though is quite impressive. As Charlotte noted, Political Science, Conflict Resolution, and International Peace-making Skills from Yale sound like the perfect courses for a future Queen, yeh? Plus she completed various work programs around the world, speaks four languages fluently, and completed basic military training. Kudos to Victoria.
I kind of wish that Kate had had some basic military training and, now, Meghan also, particularly since they are senior royals and since interacting with the military is prevalent in their royal duties and other obligations.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I think military training is not for everyone but I think Kate, being the outdoorsy type and sporty would be fine doing it. I think for Victoria it was more of an imperative because she will be the monarch but Mary of Denmark has also completed basic military training, so it's definitely worth considering for a consort also.

  40. Ok, I'm just jumping in without having read anything yet. I'm So Excited! This is So Awesome! I don't know if anyone else is picking up this vibe, but Will & Kate seem to be Authentically Really Enjoying Themselves! Almost like they are on vacation! I mean, being excited & soaking everything in, not just from a duty perspective, but because they are really excited & enjoying themselves! I loooove the cute look between Victoria & Kate, at either end of the group photo at The palace! These two have Soooo Much in Common & I can imagine them Really Hitting It Off! I looove seeing the four of them together as they leave The Palace! Daniel & Kate (the original commoners) having an unspoken bond, having gone on similar journeys to marry into The Royal Life & Responsibilities. Victoria & William both know the life of being to The Throne Born. The burdens & other aspects of their pre-destined life, that they have both had to come to terms with & that they are devoting themselves too, as adults. Both married Commoners. That says a lot to me. It says they share something in the way of their priorities & about who they are as people & Future Monarchs. Both Couples are trying to give their Children as normal a life as possible. Wouldn't it be great if a little of Victoria's style (re: sharing videos & special moments with the people) would inspire William & Catherine to possibly emulate? I had asked this question in an earlier pre-tour post, that was lost in the ether.... So I was wondering, what if the two couples really hit it off & want to get together with their children, (like regular couples) how does that work? Can Royal Family Members, from different countries, just hang out together for fun?
I was thinking how cute it would be if both Victoria & Daniel & kids met up with Will & Kate & kids for a ski vacation or something? Charlotte what are your thoughts on how this works being Royals? Are there always issues of state to consider? Does a potential close friendship give fodder for favoritism? Inquiring Minds (or at least mine:) want to know! :) Ok, I Absolutely Positively Love Everything Kate Has Worn From Head To Toe So Far!!!!! Hands Down All 10's! I also think it's a cute coin-ki-dink that after all the broo ha ha over Meghan's last outfit, Here Will & Kate are wearing all Black for the first outdoor event & then Kate steps out wearing the flip side of what Meghan wore in Wales. Hunter Green with Black Accessories! Kate looks Brilliant! Absolutely Brilliant! Now I'm not at All implying that there was any communication between the two, soon to be Sister-in-laws, but knowing Kate's gift for sartorial diplomacy...... Could she be having Meghan's back? We've of course seen Kate in Black before, but this is just such a "Sister" Moment! Maybe Great Minds Just Think Alike! :) I do think if she see's Meghan getting a bit of flack for wearing something or certain colors, she may very well don similar things to say "back off"! Kate's been known to be very protective of Harry & I can see her being the same way about Meghan! So anybody who's gonna smack down Meghan is gonna have to deal with Kate! :) Charlotte I love love love your coverage so far & can't wait for all the rest! It's like Christmas All over again! :) xoxo

    1. They could definitely be friends and meet up privately. Actually a lot of the European royals do, it's the Brits that don't really participate in that - well, at least Charles and the younger British royals don't. Queen Elizabeth does have a friendship with the two other Queens of her generation, Margrethe and Beatrix. I think a big reason why this hasn't continued in the younger generations is because the British royals always send Edward & Sophie to European royal events whereas for the other countries, monarchs and heirs are attending. Also Charles doesn't seem to be interested in friendships with the European royals.
I do think this should be changed, mainly by having William & Kate attend these royal events, plus Harry & Meghan perhaps. But this is definitely a great first step.

    2. Thanks Caroline! :) I do hope they have made an authentic connection & continue to grow their friendship beyond this tour! It'd be nice in many ways, Will & Kate haven't had the benefit of Royal Friends their age who can understand & share what it's like to be Royals in Waiting trying to raise young families & have their home lives be as normal as possible! I really hope this can grow into a life long friendship for both young families! ( it'd be great for George, Charlotte & Baby #3 to have friends who understand what their lives are like too!) Thumbs Up! :)

  42. I am so sorry to quibble, but I feel it would have been more courteous had your headline for this posting referred to the Cambridges joining the Swedish royal family, rather than vice versa. The United Kingdom is not the centre of the world.

    1. Cecilia, this blog is about Catherine so her headline makes perfect sense :)

    2. Perhaps I am old fashioned. It would still be possible to mention the Cambridges first in the headlne, by simply using the active rather than the passive mood. My point is simply that the Sewdish royal family are the hosts. Of course, if the meeting had been at the British embassy, it would have been a different matter. I feel quite sure that diplomats and those advising the Cambridges would be alive to the nuance, and would strongly deprecate the negative impression, or impression of entitlement, that is given by this form of words. But I am loath to criticise the writer of this blog, who does such a tremendous job, and sets herself, it would seem, impressively high standards of accuracy.

  43. I'll be the outlier and say I like the plain green dress, the earrings are jewelry enough. Scarf? I like Victoria's coat and boots, but her 74 year-old mother looks more youthful than she does in the group photo. The granny frilly floral and bun are too much.

  44. I think it's turning out be a smashing first day. Kate looks radiant. I loved her outdoor look and for the formal events, even if some here think her outfit is a little bare, I think it's simply, elegant and classy. I prefer it over Victoria's ensemble, which I think has too much going on. I think these two couples are wonderful representatives of the future of European monarchies.

  45. No no no, this gorgeous dress does NOT need a necklace! The interesting collar should be the focal point of the dress and it's simple but streamlined build shines without any other jewelry. 47. The Duchess looked super elegant and very relaxed today. Loved the dress and coat with faux fur trims, classic hand bag . I thing that this dress might have looked better with some accessorising, perhaps a broach, but its possible that in real life up close with just the earrings was enough. Looking forward to the evening wear and the rest of the tour.

  48. This is my Favorite Ensemble To Date! It's Royal & Lush & looks Amazing on Kate! Head To Toe, A Wow!!! I may be an outlier, but I love that Kate kept it understated with the CW Dress! The focus was brought to her face & hair. I think Kate's facial expressions are her Best Feature! :) Sometimes I think "less is more" & that's how I saw the dress today. Then it served as an underpinning to that Fabulous Coat with The Amazing Fur Collar, Hat & Cuffs! Every bit The Future Queen! :)

There are a couple of shots of the coat on other sites - it is a gorgeous one. We always wonder what is worn under the coat. This time we get to see the matching dress. I love the combination. Yes, a piece of jewlry or a scarf would have added a bit of oomph. But I also love the simplicity of the lines. It would help to see her move in it. At this stage of her pregnancy, simplicity of line may be what she prefers to emphasize.
As always, thank you Charlotte, for all the prep work you do. I love the armchair travel view you provide with your excellent background research.

Of course, I also stopped for a fika at the cafe in the orange building seen in the picture of the square :) I was also excited to see the interior of the palace since that was seemingly the area that was blocked off when I toured it.

I'm so glad I finally got up the nerve to post here. Charlotte- I love this blog (as well as your other one) and I have learned so much about the Royal family and British history from the posts. 52. Too matchy matchy and plain for my liking. I also dislike that hat on Kate immensely! Especially with the collar. It looks costumey.

I like how Victoria isn’t in head-to-toe one color and while her dress may not be to some people’s taste, I like how delicate and feminine it is. She kept her hair simple and pulled up to not distract from the details. I think she looks wonderful. The coat with the fur collar on Victoria.... perfection!

  54. I wasn't sure about Catherines outfit when it was just the dress, but when she put the coat, hat, gloves and bag with it - she looks so stylish. Crown Princess Victoria has always had an eclectic style, quite formal and strict but also flamboyant at the same time (althought that sounds like a complete contradiction). I love that they are getting to spend some time with other royals who are at a similar stage in life and share the experience. I do feel that Catherine and Victoria could get along quite well, but also Princess Mary too - just image the 3 of them! These 3 ladies would be a powerful force if they colaborated.

The dress was great from the bust down, it had too high of a neck in my opinion, just didn’t really pop with such full hair. Loving the new purse!!
