The Cambridges' Scandinavian Tour Kicks Off in Stockholm!

The Cambridges kicked off their Scandinavian tour in Stockholm this morning. The four-day visit to Sweden and Norway will see the royals meeting a wide variety of people, including children and young people, those working in the mental health sector, and leaders in business, academia and scientific research, government, civil society and the creative industries. The UK’s links with each country are extensive, and William and Kate are looking forward to building a lasting friendship with the people and royal families in both.

This trip was initially scheduled for last November and set to include Finland. Kate was very unwell with Hyperemesis gravidarum, however, and it was decided the best course of action was to postpone until early 2018. William travelled to Finland solo and an itinerary was set for the couple to visit Sweden and Norway.

Of course, the primary aim of this tour and others undertaken in Europe over the past year by members of the Royal family is to deploy a touch of 'soft diplomacy' as Brexit negotiations continue. The Guardian reports:

'The royal couple will deliver, the Foreign Office hopes, a clear message: Britain may be leaving the EU, but we are still part of Europe. William and Kate arrive in Sweden on Tuesday aboard a private jet with a comparatively modest entourage of 13: private secretaries, press officers, logistics staff, Kate’s privately funded hairdresser and their senior adviser, Sir David Manning, a former British ambassador to the US.
The couple’s unspoken task is to woo Europe as the UK undertakes the process of leaving the EU and rebooting existing trade relations. Royal overseas visits are decided by the FCO, with schedules drawn up by the British ambassador to the host country, who accompanies the royal visitor throughout. Since the vote for Brexit the Cambridges have been dispatched to France, Poland and Germany, Prince Harry has travelled to Denmark, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall have visited Romania, Italy and Austria, and Kate has undertaken a solo trip to the Netherlands.
The British Council, the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and education opportunities, believes such visits have enormous value for its work. Rachel Launay, its country director in Germany, said of the Cambridges’ visit last year: “People wanted to see a couple who portray a fresh modern image of the British royal family.” The visit meant the “the British Council had the opportunity to introduce them to creative Germans and Brits who are setting the cultural agenda in Berlin together”.

Ahead of the tour, Kensington Palace said: "The four day tour will include time learning more about what makes Scandinavian culture so unique, from attitudes towards young people and mental health in schools, to the importance of being active and spending time outdoors, whatever the temperature may be. The Duke and Duchess are keen to experience a taste of the Scandinavian way of life for themselves, and to see how people of all generations battle the elements to make the most of their surroundings."

William, Kate and their team travelled to Stockholm yesterday evening and arrived at the Residence of the British Ambassador where they are staying during their visit. From there, they travelled to their first engagement, a bandy hockey event at Vasaparken, an outdoor ice-skating venue.

The Duke and Duchess met a group of local bandy players on the ice and learned more about the sport and its popularity in Sweden.

Bandy was introduced to Sweden in 1895. The Swedish royal family, noblemen and diplomats were among the first players. It has become one of the most popular winter sports in Scandinavia, Eastern Europe and the US. It's a sort of field hockey on ice that's been played in Scandinavia for decades, but now the game of bandy is pressing to win a broader fan base with reports it could soon become an Olympic sport.

Sporty Kate was eager to give the game a go.

The Duchess looked pretty impressed with her efforts :)

A shot from William.

Richard Palmer noted: "William scored two and Kate one. Each had three penalties. A victory for William."

William and Kate sip from a drink brought to them in the traditional Bandy briefcase.

More from Wiki:

'A "bandy briefcase" ("bandyportfölj" in Swedish) is the classic accessory for spectating – it is typically made of brown leather, well worn and contains a warm drink in a thermos and/or a bottle of liquor. Bandy is most often played at outdoor arenas during winter time, so the need for spectators to carry flasks or thermoses of 'warming' liquid like glögg is a natural effect.'

Vasaparken is a park in Stockholm, located in Vasastaden and named after the Royal Vasa Dynasty. It was established in this area in 19th century and during World War I, the park was used to grow potatoes for the city. The world-famous Swedish children’s author Astrid Lindgren, who wrote Pippi Longstocking, lived in a building by the park and Vasaparken is mentioned in many of her books. After her death, a corner of the park was renamed in the author's honour. The outdoor skating rink is hugely popular at this time of year.

Chatting with players.

William and Kate posed for photos with players before leaving.

From a sartorial perspective this tour has two considerations in particular: the cold weather and the fact Kate is now six months pregnant. We have all been looking forward to seeing her choices. For day one of the tour, I loved Kate's very stylish casual first look of the day - mixing British and Swedish brands. Kate's coat is the Burberry Toddingwall Shearling Trench Coat. (with thanks to Heaven and Middleton Maven for the swift ID).

The piece is described as "Shearling collar, buttoned epaulette at shoulders, long sleeves, buttoned tab at cuffs, flap at yoke, buckle-fastened belt at waist, two buttoned welt pockets at front, branded buttons, single vent at back hem, shearling linen. 100% lamb leather."

Burberry

Kate's sweater is by Swedish brand Fjällräven (Rebecca noted the name loosely translates to Mountain/Arctic Fox). Founded in 1960, the company specialises in outdoor equipment - mostly clothing and rucksacks. Sara identified the piece as the Övik Folk Knit Sweater. The patterned knitted woollen garment features a round neckline and ribbed sleeve cuffs. The piece is also available at Amazon and Moosejaw.

Kate's boots are by Sorel.

Heaven notes Kate wore the £120 Torino Style. They are available in a variety of sizes at  Net-A-Porter.

More from the product description:

'Sorel's 'Torino' boots are perfect for drizzly days in the city or walks in the countryside - the rubber base will protect your feet from dewy grass and puddles, while the faux fur-trimmed cuffs lock in heat. They're made from a waterproof combination of suede, leather and shell, and lined in cozy microfleece that can be removed depending on the weather.'

Kate's Beanie hat was the highlight of the look for me. It really took me back to her pre-wedding style.

It is thought Kate wore the Eugenia Kim Rain Faux Fur Pompom Wool Beanie (with thanks to Perth Fashion & Ashley). The New York based accessorises designer is best known for her collection of hats. Kensington Palace confirmed Kate did not wear real fur today, the faux fur version can be viewed here.

Eugenia Kim

Kinga identified Kate's snood as the Brora Cashmere Fine Cable Snood in bordeaux. It's currently reduced from £135 to £89.

Brora

Kate has sported a pair of gold earrings by the Scottish brand several times including the Wimbledon Final in 2016.

Kate accessorised with her Asprey London button earrings.

Asprey London

And completed the look with the John Lewis Suede Faux Fur Trim Thermal Gloves. They are sold out in black, but remain available in brown on sale for £21.

The topic of Kate wearing fur was addressed by KP.

Next, the couple will travel to the Royal Palace of Stockholm to attend a luncheon hosted by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia to welcome them to Sweden.

So nice to start out with a sporty event. Even though I'm not a sporty person myself my country is very sporty and winter active so it makes sense. And William and Kate are always up for some competition to get them going!
I've never played Bandy myself but my dad used to play. During winter the local football club turn the gravel field into ice.

They look adorable!! Perfect for the venue and weather!! Love that Kate is wearing a Fjällräven shirt!

Looking forward to the rest of the day. So surreal that they are in "my" country!

    1. This is a great look for Kate. I think its so hard to stay warm and look stylish while in the last trimester but she has done it. The coat, hat, snood and gloves are super nice. I had a pair of Sorel boots about ten years ago and they were so heavy. My lower back always bothered me the day after wearing them. With the newer materials available, they probably are much lighter now.

Lovely that this first tour engagement is so quintessentially Swedish- at least to this part Swedish American. Im looking forward to the rest of the tour.

    2. Once again, I find my self agreeing with you, Erika. It *can* be tricky to look stylish and be warm at the same time, but Kate nailed it. I truly like this look from head to toe. And William looks quite handsome in all black (non-tuxedo!). :-)

And I admire Kate's team spirit. Good for her.

Haha, they are taking a drink from a "Bandyportfölj". I had never heard of them until recently. My dad told me about them just a few weeks ago and how it has become a tradition for "true" bandy fans to have one of those!! This is so fun, seeing my own world through the eyes of others!

(I'm a bit over-hyped so might be a bit spammy!!)

Honestly, I generally don't follow much Swedish media at all so I wouldn't be the best to do that.

I won't be seeing them, I don't live near Stockholm. But it's really exciting to see them in Sweden!

She looks absolutely beautiful and it has nothing to do with her outfit. She looks Very radiant and appears very jouful. Obviously with just the one picture in this first look her outfit could end up not being a favorite of mine but honestly her happiness is what is most noticeable.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Minus her real fur that she is wearing as a wife of an heir whose main issue is conservation, I like her outfit! Hope for no more fur during this tour.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I agree - really, truly disappointed in the fur. She looks stunning and is usually so thoughtful about her clothing choices. That is a big miss for me, and doubly so given Williams conservation work. This isn’t the first time they have a adopted a “do as I say, not as I do,” approach to that topic.

      Delete
    2. Anett, I totally agree with you. Harvey Nichols website describes the pompom as 100% Arctic fox, not the style of the hat. That means the pompom is real fur. To kill such a stunning creature as an Arctic fox in order to make pompoms is utterly shameful and completely unnecessary when there are so many stunning fake options available nowadays. This is a truly depressing start to the tour for me and, as you say, completely diminishes any conservation message that William may want to promote.

      Delete
    3. What a bummer! Initially, I loved the look of the beanie. Wish it was fake :(

      Delete
    4. I'm also disappointed in her for wearing fur again. Given William's conservation efforts but also just in general because as you say, Helen, fantastic faux fur products are available today and I don't think that in this day and age wearing fur is the thing to do. It's highly controversial and as a modern royal, I think she could set a positive example. It's especially sad that it's the fur of an arctic fox, which is such beautiful animal and to wear it to Scandinavia where it is an endangered species is even more disappointing.

      Delete
    5. I did a bit of research with the help of a Finnish person, apparently in Scandinevia, it is a tradition to farm raise these animals. They are kept in small cages, in bad conditions and bred and killed only for the fur.
It makes this whole fur business even more abhoring.

      Delete
    6. I read that Sweden is in the process of banning these practices. If that is true, it makes this an even larger blunder.

I also read that Richard Palmer tweeted that KP says she is not wearing real fur on her hat. If that is the case, is there an alternate ID for the hat? I will be doubly disappointed if a product was punched with fur and then the fur was snipped off and a fake was added or if her hat was specially commissioned. I think that there are many, many, many lovely hats of this style that do not use fur and it is important that she highlight those brands. It is a key part of he platform. I have liked her look this morning and the pictures but this is disappointing. I sincerely hope whole different product is put forward as an ID

      Delete
    7. It is faux fur as confirmed by KP. The same brand has a faux fur version. Phew!

      Delete
    8. Good news!! It seems she wore a fake fur hat!! It was close.:)

      Delete
    9. It isn't fur but faux fur........

      Delete
    10. I'm very glad that it wasn't real fur. It's a pity that all the people reply-kating now bought the fur version of the hat but not Kate's fault of course.

      Delete
    11. Thank goodness! So relieved it is faux fur :)

      Delete
    12. Yes there were a lot of people on this blog crticisizing Kate before they even knew the facts. A lesson for us all to not be so quick to criticize before we know all the facts.

      Delete
    13. Exactly, anon 14:42. Many people on social media were quick to jump on Kate's coat and Kate's hat because the initial IDs were wrong. It is a lesson for everyone to confirm before they criticise!

      Delete
    14. Maybe the hat doesn't have real fox fur, but that coat is real shearling and that comes from a lamb's skin. So she must not be too concerned about animals or conservation. Very disappointing.

      Delete
    15. Can someone explain to me why fur is such a crime but leather gathers nary a comment?

      Delete
    16. I am glad KP confirmed it because the faux outrage was really amusing and annoying at the same time. As for not wearing shearling, it's just like saying you shouldn't wear leather. I think wearing leather and shearling from cattle and lamb are perfectly acceptable as we eat the meat.

      Delete
    17. Interesting question, 16:53.

      Delete
  15. It's lamb wool... not fur..

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I meant the coat...I don't know if the fox must be killed to obtain its fur...

      Delete
    2. I think given the real vs faux confusion, it would be wise to brands that do not support the fur trade. The Kate effect is very real and I’d hate to think of the people who made the wrong purchase trying to emulate the Duchess. The outcry is a good sign of the public’s appetite for real fur. It would be great to see companies celebrate for pursuing ethical practices across all of their lines. That said - Kate looked radiant.

  27. She does look incredible! Thank heavens the fur is faux---hopefully there is a point there. I do think her earrings were the main event rather then a pin on her dress. I thought the length absolutely perfect as it did not make her look like a frump! Just below the knee dresses do not always photograph well especially on tall women. Her Mulberry handbag using the lady handle is absolutely in vogue and on trend this year. 41. The Swedes are very, very sensitive about the use of fur. The Duchess would have - or should have been- very savvy to this- as I believe that she must have been on some level with all her fake fur accessories etc today. No wonder all the media tizzy about it apparently in the morning when the tobaggan hat was nearly identified as real!
Swedes don't play around with their hatred of real fur. I lived in Sweden for a number of years, wore fur on occassion and can assure youof intense backlash. Right, Rebecca? ;)
I'm shocked frankly that she could not or did not however, know better than to wear a shearling. To most Swedes there is little difference. An animal still died for something you are wearing. Catherine absolutely had to be clued into the very very strong opinions of the Scandinavians about this. That shearling was a clear miss. And her shearling hat, too. Mistake. Take it from someone that endured a lot of stares and hatred. frankly, I was warm- and I didn't care!
