Our Stylists' Submissions for the Dutch State Banquet (Part 1)

Good evening! We're back with the first batch of our stylists submissions! When considering possibilities for our 'Styling Kate' activity this summer, the upcoming Dutch State banquet seemed the perfect event; an ideal, sparkle-filled distraction during this quiet period. As your choices started coming in, I was hugely impressed with the consideration and thought which went into each look. From elegant looks by Kate's favourite designers to brands she's yet to try, and from dazzling pieces from the Royal Jewel Vault to shoes to die for and sartorial diplomacy implemented with clever nods to the Netherlands; it's been tremendous fun as always. A word of thanks to all who participated and shared supportive comments (one of the best elements of the annual post). Without further ado, you're in for a fashion filled treat :)

Unknown - The Black Crepe Jersey Lace Panel Evening Dress featuring a sarabrande lace insert by Alexander McQueen is styled with the Cartier Halo Tiara Kate wore on her wedding day, Kiki McDonough Eternal mini cushion cut white topaz and diamond earrings and the Jimmy Choo black suede Sadira pumps with oyster bead pearl.

Kim in Oregon - Kim would love to see Kate wearing Temperley London's Ray Sequin Gown. The shimmering gown is described: "With hand-stitched sequins in opulent sparkling gold, the Ray Sequin Gown is undoubtedly one of the most glamorous eveningwear choices from the Autumn '18 collection. Featuring an illusion plunging neckline with a tulle panel and front split at the hem". The Queen's Oriental Circlet Tiara completes the ensemble.

Rebecca Sweden - "All the purples in my post are supposed to be matching so some imagination might be needed! The choices are "realistic" in that the brands are likely and most of the things are already owned." Rebecca chose a bespoke McQueen gown. The centrepiece of the look would be the Queen's amethyst-brooch worn as a pendant in the collet necklace. The look is completed with the Greville Chandelier Earrings, the Queen's Wedding Gift Bracelet, Queen Alexandra's Kokoshnik Tiara, Kate's Oscar de la Renta Platinum Lamé Cabrina Pumps and a bag from Aspinal of London.

Kelly - Inspired by the cape gown Kate wore in Norway earlier this year, Kelly selected the Marchessa Notte Cape-Embellished Crepe Gown. The emerald piece is embellished with clusters of beads and crystals that look like brooches holding the sweeping cape to the shoulders. It's seamed and darted at the bodice to balance the fluid swathes of fabric. A regal touch of sparkle in the form of the Lotus Flower tiara and Kate's Kiki McDonough pink tourmaline and green amethyst earrings completes the look.

Hope from USA - "I had a couple of dresses I liked, but went with this one because I love color and feel it would move well. I think it looks regal. Plus I think the neckline would be gorgeous on Kate." The gown is the Marchesa Off-the-Shoulder Corset Bodice Ombre Tulle Ball Gown with Velvet Flower Corsage, and is teamed with Kate's Prada scalloped sandals, black Prada clutch, the Cartier Halo Tiara, the King Khalid of Saudi Arabia Necklace and Kate's diamond and pearl earrings.

Caroline in Montana - The Jenny Packham Windemere Snowdrop embellished gown from the SS19 Collection is styled with the Strathmore Rose Tiara, the Queen's Wedding Gift Bracelet and Queen Mary's bracelet. The look is completed with a pair of Kiki McDonough Classic 18k Gold Detachable Drop Earrings, Jimmy Choo Romy Glitter pumps and a Roger Vivier Floral Crystal-Buckle clutch.

Nicole J - "I think she needs to go a bit bold as Queen Maxima tends to dress in bold colors or prints." Nicole chose a limited edition blue statement gown from Jenny Packham's SS18 Collection. The gown is styled with the Greville Tiara, jewels from the Brazilian Aquamarine Parure and the Jimmy Choo Lancer Champagne Glitter Leather Pointy Toe Pumps.

Melissa M - Oscar de la Renta's Off-the-Shoulder Draped Silk-Faille Gown is styled with the Delhi Durbar Tiara, earrings from the Dubai Sapphire Demi-Parure, the Modern Sapphire Bracelet, Gianvito Rossi 105 pumps in denim blue, and the Crystal Slide-Lock Judith Leiber Clutch.

Beth W7372 - "I’m assuming she might do one of the colors of the Netherlands so my guess is blue or white since I doubt she would wear orange. I love this Jenny Packham gown but in blue." Like Caroline, Beth was taken by the Snowdrop embellished tulle gown. She would style it with Kiki McDonough Blue Topaz and Diamond Drop Earrings in white gold with a matching necklace. The look is completed with the Gianvito Rossi Portofino 105 sandals in "matching blue or silver".

Stephanie MW - "The look I have chosen is quite glamorous, but I think would look stunning on the Duchess. Queen Maxima herself often chooses quite stunning gowns so I chose a dress that would be suitable for the occasion, but also upping it a notch fashion wise." We have the Jenny Packham Ophelia gown from the AW18 Collection with the Cambridge Lovers Knot Tiara, Gianvito 105 pumps in off white, Diana's Collingwood pearl earrings and the Queen's Diamond Collet necklace.

Anon23 - Anon23 chose the Brandon Maxwell Long-Sleeve Gown with Waterfall Train and Low-Cut Scoop Gown from the Resort 2018 Collection. The gown would be customised with shortened sleeves. It is styled with Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara, the Greville Peardrop Earrings and the Jardine Star Brooch worn in Kate's hair.

Royalfan - Royalfan selected a sweeping one-shoulder gown by Armani. It is styled with the Tiffany Fancy Intense Yellow Diamond Tiara. The tiara is composed of nine Fancy Intense Yellow diamonds surrounded by brilliant white diamonds. The look is completed with Louboutin So Kate pumps, a bronze clutch, Tiffany Soleste Earrings and Queen Mary's Diamond Indian Bangle Bracelets.

Eriq L - A green floral-appliquéd peplum gown by Marchessa Notte is teamed with the Cambridge Lovers Knot Tiara, Kate's Emerald Crystal Drop Earrings, Diana's five-row pearl bracelet with diamond flower clasp, a leather Yves Saint Laurent clutch and Manolo Blahnik Green Hangisi 105 pumps with jewel buckle.

Julia - "For a gown I choice a Walker gown I became enchanted with last year (thinking ahead). The silk is based on designs in Flemish paintings. Considering the magnificent Dutch still-life paintings and Kate's love of art - I can't think of a better choice and the colours will pick up the orders I mention below. - The Jan B gown found in their current collection. The dress has a gorgeous skirt for walking into the banquet but a plain sexy modern bodice. That's good because I think it's time Kate had some orders. I'm awarding her the Queen's Order - if William doesn't want ivory, it could be done in porcelain (as a descendant of the potteries, I favour that,) or enamel - also a British tradition. I'm also requesting the Dutch give Kate a sash for an order as they did for Diana - most probably the Order of the House of Orange. I also think it's time to lay ghost to rest and bring Diana's sapphire choker out." The look is completed with Kate's sapphire and diamond earrings, the Sophia Webster Lucia Satin Sandals, The Sapphire Bandeau worn by Princess Margaret and the Russian Sapphire Cluster brooch to pin the Dutch order.

Heather - Heather chose a teal Edwin Oudshoorn gown with a detailed intricate bodice. It would be worn with the Five Aquamarine Tiara (worn once by the Queen in Canada and more recently loaned to the Countess of Wessex), Kiki McDonough Candy Mini Blue Topaz and Diamond earrings in yellow gold, Poppy heels and black clutch by Emmy London.

Ruth - "I picked a coral gown, a nod to the orange color without going too bold. I think the color would suit her very well." The sparkling Jenny Packham gown is teamed with the Cambridge Lovers Knot Tiara, Gianvito Rossi suede pumps, Kate's Jimmy Choo Celeste clutch and the Kiki McDonough earrings the Duchess wore for Pippa's wedding.

Sophie O - Sophie would style the Duchess in Erdem's Petunia Gown Mariko Meadow Black Voile. The gown is described as "a delicate piece, grounded by the block black grosgrain ribbons on the waist and sleeves." The gown is accessorised with Her Majesty's decadent George VI and Modern Sapphire Set. A pair of black suede Gianvito Rossi pumps complete the ensemble.

Anonymous - "I would love to see Kate in a bespoke version of this gown, but in black velvet. I'm thinking black, if only to showcase the jewels, I'd love to see Kate wear." The off-the-shoulder lace panel McQueen gown is teamed with the Queen's Pearl Drop earrings, the Cullinan brooch and Queen Alexandra's Kokoshnik Tiara.

Tiara Watcher - "I’m submitting a rewear idea. I loved the gorgeous blue dress she wore on the Indus Tour in 2016. It was worn with a lovely beaded wrap, but I’d love to see her wear it without the wrap and with the Queen Mother’s sapphire earrings! Since I doubt we’ll see any new tiaras for her, I’m going with a rewear of tiara and other jewels." The Queen Mother's Lotus Flower Tiara, the Queen's Wedding Gift Bracelet, the matching Packham clutch and Kate's Oscar de la Renta Cabrina pumps finish off the look.

Sofy - Sofy selected the bespoke navy Alexander McQueen gown Sandra Bullock wore to the 2014 Academy Awards. The strapless piece features a sweetheart neckline and dramatic draping. It's accessorised with Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara and the Dubai Looped Sapphire necklace and earrings from the royal vault.

Alaina from NJ - Alaina chose a pale pink ruffled gown with floral embellishment by one of Queen Maxima's favourite Dutch designers, Jan Taminiau. The Strathmore Rose Tiara, Kate's Jimmy Choo Romy pumps, Le Vain Strawberry Gold Cinnamon Citrine earrings and a matching necklace complete the look. Kate's hair would be styled in the same updo from Pippa's wedding.

Kiwi Gal - "I chose this simple but stylish Roland Mouret gown as I love the silhouette and the lovely red colour (one of the colours of the Dutch flag!). I also feel like it has some elements from both of the last two gowns she has worn to previous state banquets i.e. the red colour, like the first Jenny Packham & the bell sleeves from the Marchesa." The Mouret Coleman Gown is styled with the Greville Chandelier Earrings, the Queen's Ruby and Diamond Floral Bandeau Necklace, the Queen's Diamond Quatrefoil Bracelet and the Oriental Circlet Tiara.

Rebecca - "I've chosen a dress from a brand I don't think Kate's worn before, but I think it's the kind of dress you imagine a princess wearing, with a wonderful big skirt. Something similar could be made bespoke by Alexander McQueen with more architectural details, maybe a bustle like on her wedding dress? The neckline is maybe a bit open, but all the better to see the diamonds!" The draped off-the-shoulder satin gown is by Reem Acra. It's styled with the Cambridge Lovers Knot Tiara, Kate's Oscar de la Renta Cabrina pumps, the Duchess of Gloucester's Pendant earrings, the Nizam of Hyderabad necklace, the Queen's Wedding Gift Bracelet and Queen Mary's Bar Choker Bracelet.

Gabi K - Gabi K shared the following image featuring her selections for the Dutch State banquet. They include: a customised version of the McQueen shown below in navy with a longer train, the Lotus Flower Tiara, Kate's (very popular) Oscar de la Renta pumps, Kate's Jimmy Choo clutch, the Queen's Chandelier earrings and Quatrefoil Bracelet.

Katie - Katie would style the Duchess in an Alexander McQueen Ivory silk crepe evening dress with crystal orchid embroidery, featuring cape sleeves and a fitted waist. The look is styled with the Jimmy Choo Romy Silver and Dusk Blue Fireball Glitter Dégradé Fabric Pointy Toe Pumps and Finley Clutch. The Five Aquamarine Tiara, Kiki McDonough Juno Bracelet and Juno earrings make for a sparkling finish.

Ivy - Ivy's choice of gown for the banquet is an off-the-shoulder Vivienne Westwood design. It's accessorised with the Queen Mother's Lotus Flower Tiara. As a nod to the Netherlands Ivy completed the look with an orange crystal clutch and citrine jewels.

B - The navy Zac Posen Pleated Tulle Sleeveless Gown with a sweeping train is styled with Queen Mary's Fringe Tiara, the Greville Chandelier Earrings, the Queen's Wedding Gift Bracelet and Christian Louboutin Iriza 100 Glitter Pumps. B would complete the look with a modern beehive hairstyle.

Anja - "This would be my choice for Kate because the Dutch King and Queen are young and fun and the dress combines every official Dutch colour." We have the print Karolina gown by Matsour'I, the Christian Louboutin Pigalle Patent pumps and Vero clutch, the Lotus Flower Tiara and the Queen Mother's Diamond Flower earrings.

Amanda - "In dressing Kate, I would choose the ivory Carolina Herrera silk gown featuring a high neck, an abstract print and an open back, plus one unexpected pop of color via an orange insert at the hemline." The Spring 2014 Collection piece is styled with Kate's black Gianvito Rossi Ankle-Wrap sandals, the Cambridge Lovers Knot Tiara, the Queen's Chandelier earrings and Kate's art deco bracelet.

Frances - The Roland Mouret Gerzon gown. "Kate is trim and toned and I think will look great in this color and style of gown. Interesting detail on the top of the bodice,  yet lots of room for jewellery." The Lotus Flower Tiara, Bahrain Pearl Drop earrings, Four Row Japanese Pearl Choker, the Wedding Gift Bracelet, Quatrefoil Bracelet, Bottega Veneta clutch and black suede pumps complete the look.

If any of the looks above contain the incorrect item or the wrong colour, don't hesitate to let me know. It's been known to happen with some regularity every now and again...

In other news, royal reporter Omid Scobie revealed the Cambridges returned from Mustique after a fortnight on the paradise island late last week. Hello! correspondent Ainhoa Barcelona spoke with guests who attended a party with the royals: "The couple were spotted on a rare night out at the island's famous Basil's Bar. The theme of the bash, which was also attended by Mick Jagger and his daughter Jade, was a Splash of Gold. Fellow revellers have exclusively revealed to HELLO! that William and Kate attended 'on the early side' of the party and looked to be having a great time. Sources also told us that the couple looked 'island chic' with Prince William sporting a Pinkhouse Mustique shirt to support the local brand. 'They were there for the cocktails segment and kept it rather classy,' they said. The royal couple are good friends with legendary barman Basil Charles of Basil's Bar; he even set up a pop-up bar at the Goring hotel in London, where Kate stayed the night before her wedding, during the week of the nuptials in 2011." The scoop made the cover of the magazine this week.

Earlier today, William travelled to France to attend commemorations marking the centenary of the Battle of Amiens. During a speech the Prince said: "Amiens was symbolic of the entente cordiale, the co-operation without which victory was impossible. It is entirely fitting therefore, that today, that same international coalition has returned to Amiens with our former enemy, in peace and partnership. It is fitting too that we come together here, in this magnificent Cathedral, which has such a profound connection to all those that served. After the war, a commemorative tablet was installed here by the Imperial War Graves Commission, 'In sacred memory of six hundred thousand men of the armies of Great Britain and Ireland who fell in France and Belgium during the Great War'. Memorial Tablets were subsequently installed by other nations to honour their fallen. And the Chapel of the Allies, where today we will renew the bonds forged during the War, is a lasting testament to the continuing relationship between those who served here a hundred years ago and the people of Amiens."

It is expected the Cambridge family will spend most of August at their Norfolk country home, Anmer Hall, before travelling to Balmoral for a few days in the Highlands with the Queen.

'William’s summer started with a sunshine break in the Caribbean with wife Kate Middleton and their three children — Prince George, 5, Princess Charlotte, 3, and Prince Louis, 3 months. They visited Mustique with Kate’s parents — where they likely enjoyed tennis, scuba-diving and teaching the older children to swim.
For the first time, George and Charlotte are both on a break from school until early September. Therefore, their usual trip to the Queen Elizabeth‘s summer getaway at Balmoral Castle in Scotland that often takes place in early September might have to come sooner. The family is also likely to spend much of their time at their country home, Anmer Hall, rather than Kensington Palace in London, which is fringed by parks that are packed with tourists this time of year.'

We'll see you in a few days with Part 2 of our stylists' looks! :)

  1. I was too late to submit, but I would have picked that red Roland Mouret dress too. It's a no brainer. Would be perfect. Did anyone find any: A. orange dresses (I found 0), or B. Dutch designers or design houses?

    3. One possibility would be Natan. I know regular European royal watchers will be shrieking here because he doesn't have the best reputation for fit - he's a Belgium born designer but is used constantly by Maxima as well as Mathilde so I think he could be called an honourary Dutchman.

The reason I mention this is he produced a lovely red and white gown that struck me it would be perfect for Kate. Mathilde wore a day version - she and Maxima aren't shy about using the same designs and her version was all red and different. I think this might be an appealing choice for Kate. Here's a link for your perusal. If you like red, it might be a good choice and interestingly reminds me a bit of a red gown Diana wore by a Dutch born British designer Jan van Velden. She even had her portrait painted in it. Sadly, he seems to no longer design - not sure what his fate was.

Here's a link to the red and white Natan gown: You need to scroll down.

Here's a link to the Diana photo which might inspire other red ideas.

Dutch designers include the fabulous Taminiau used here several times and Viktor and Rolf - I don't know others - perhaps others will chime in. \

For orange gowns - here's a couple of links that would be Kate possiblities:

Blue and white for Delft would be another possibilities. These are just ideas for inspiration. I'm sure you'll come up with something brilliant yourself.

The selections are so fabulous I'm letting them wash over me. Will comment in the morning.

    5. Color me impressed by your depth of knowledge! The version of the Natan gown with the pink tulle skirt would be beautiful and stylish. Something a little different. The red Roland I was originally leaning towards is a sure-fire look but would be a little bit similar to previous looks. -

    8. I had so much fun with finding choices (when I should have been concentrating on real work and checking for typos and misguided spell correcting) that I could have gone and on an on. There was a wonderful vintage brown chiffon tulip gown by Maggie Reeves, a Canadian designer, that was on First Dibs that I would have loved for Meghan had she been thought to be attending. Just for fun, here's the link. I think it's been sold.

      https://www.google.ae/search?q=maggie+reeves+brown+chiffon+gown&rlz=1C1CHBF_enUS800US800&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=02ABwjr4ji1ndM%253A%252CzemJlgib1MKZJM%252C_&usg=AFrqEzf8qKLfEyj8A6TedwR0L8nM3xatMg&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwinz5u6_uLcAhUGAcAKHctpDz4Q9QEwBXoECAYQDg#imgrc=02ABwjr4ji1ndM:

A lot of brickbats get thrown at Natan and some of them deserved, but like Erdem, some issues seem to come from royal choices as much as the designer. I really found that one above a very pretty gown - and very Kate-like. Maybe for a Belgium visit...

    9. I love Talbot Runhof gowns - I was hoping for one for the German visit - alas no such formal event. (This blog is a hint that formal events are welcome by supporters - something at the moment the European royals seem to understand better than ours.)

I'm struggling with your link though - am excited to see the choice and will try again to see what I'm doing wrong.

  2. Oh wow. These are some stunning looks! We’ve got quite the fashionable crowd here. The dresses are all lovely, but I’m especially interested in the jewel selections. I would love to see Kate wear some new jewels or something unworn from the Queen’s stash.

I wonder if she has much choice in jewellery or if she gets one or two offers from someone in charge of it. However it does seem that Kate doesn't go for great swags of jewellery unlike the Duchess of Cornwall or the Queen herself. Interesting that she hasn't been given any orders or the Queen's own personal one. I wonder why? I really enjoyed looking at all your selections. It would be nice if Kate chose one wouldn't it!

Wow! What a great start! Charlotte, I knew your readers wouldn't disappoint! I love all of the looks here (and wouldn't mind having them in my closet...don't know where I'd wear them, but...)! Rebecca, the purple is to die for--it's my favorite color: so rich and yummy. Kelly, I debated between submitting your dress and two others. You styled it perfectly!
I'm looking forward to seeing the other looks!
Thanks again, Charlotte, for putting this together. I imagine it is very time-consuming; know that we all appreciate it.

  12. I love all of these looks but my favorite is the bright green, caped dress that Kelly picked out. I love the color- but if the state banquet is at Buck House it may look a bit Christmasy next to all of the red and gilt. I would check out what Maxima wears for state occasions- Kate may take a page out of her look book for inspiration and to compliment her guest. The Queen usually wears white to these occasions- all the better to show off her bling! I know this is a big favor for Charlotte, but I would love to do the same on Meghan. Won't it be fun to see these two beautiful ladies next to each other at a banquet? Sigh....

I love all of these choices! The jewelery is simply stunning. It's so interesting seeing all kinds of different types of gowns. I would be so much fun to be "Cinderella" for an evening and enjoy some of these gorgeous creations!

Thanks so much Charlotte for taking the time to do all this. It's truly appreciated!

  15. What fun to check the blog and find this!! I think the BRF needs to have more state dinners so Kate can have more occasions to wear all these beautiful combinations. I almost chose a caped dress. So many different looks, but all beautiful.

  16. I loved so many of these, but that Zac Posen ball gown submitted by B took my breath away (and I’m not usually into big ball gowns). The color and style would look gorgeous on Kate. Love the care everyone one put in to their submissions, and the tremendous amount of work Charlotte put in to this incredible post. Such a great example of community.

    1. I agree! I was just about to comment that the Zac Posen is by far my favorite of this group of gowns. Very unique. And I also, am not that much into ball gowns. I'd much prefer a "dress Kate" challenge that would be for casual separates. Perhaps a Fall outdoor outing such as in Canada two years ago. - Boots, jackets, etc. Or an indoor event that would call for more casual attire - I'm dying to get her out of those skinny jeans and into some nice trousers! But I know most people find the dressy events much more fun to choose for, I suppose because they're more of a fantasy for us regular people.

    2. Pam, a “Style Kate” post for casual separates is a great idea. I, too, think Kate needs some inspiration in this area of her wardrobe. I’d be interested to see what people come up with as options for her.

  17. Wow, don't even know where to begin....these are stunning, ALL of them and Kate would look exceptional in every one of them. I hope we do get to see Kate in every single one of the tiaras at some time!! Aside from the creative talent, I am impressed with the number of entries and followers of this blog. What a wonderful community! Charlotte, as usual, you have done an exceptional job of compiling all the looks and it is going to be so enjoyable to watch this "cyber runway show"!!! Very nice to have included William's speech today, he does speak so very well and he looks quite handsome. Happy this Cambridge family of five seems to have had a great summer getaway!! Can't wait to see Kate again and loving the esprit du corp this event provides. Job well done by all!! cc

  18. In almost any of these outfits, Kate would look as much a princess as she is. They are beautiful!

A few comments about jewels. We are dreaming of course, and in our dreams all is possible. In reality, there are a few things suggested that are problematic. The Hyderabad necklace no longer exists, the Oriental circlet and possibly Queen Alexandra's Kokoshnik tiara are reserved for queens, the Greville tiara seems to be on permanent loan to Camilla, only the Queen and Princess Anne have worn Queen Mary's fringe tiara (at their weddings; it was made from Queen Mary's wedding tiara), and the Delhi Durbar tiara caused a political outcry, especially in India, after Camilla wore it once. The Strathmore tiara is said to need considerable renovation, and perhaps that will eventually happen. I think it unlikely that the Queen loans items she often wears, such as the Greville chandelier earrings or the Brazil aquamarines, though her wedding bracelet was initially a very surprising loan. I have felt, myself, that the choices of jewelry, especially tiaras, can be somewhat limited for princesses. It has been very interesting, however, to see the halo tiara, Queen Mary's diamond bandeau and its center brooch, and the smaller aquamarine tiara come out of the vaults. The suggestion of the sapphire bandeau is fascinating. I wonder whether the sapphire itself is still available to wear with it.

There are other suggestions I especially like. I suggested the Dubai sapphires myself, with a very different gown. I love the way they are used here. The Queen Mother's sapphire fringe earrings and the Russian sapphire brooch would be beautiful with the wonderful blue gown from India, which needs to reappear. Kate's smaller emerald earrings are very pretty; I'm looking forward to seeing parts of her larger emerald demi-parure. Though I don't really like mixing costume jewelry with splendid royal heirlooms, I do think the Kiki candy blue topaz earrings are great with the smaller aquamarine tiara.

One question: Rebecca-Sweden, did you consider using more of the Queen's amethyst demi-parure, especially the earrings? I love the brooch, and I think the necklace could be altered to be more wearable. The earrings are lovely as they are. Your purple collection is beautiful.

Thank you, Charlotte! Putting this together is a mammoth undertaking; your willingness to give us this treat draws more submissions each time, making a huge project for you. It is such a pleasure to see our suggestions take visual form under your skillful touch. You are to be royally thanked and commended.

I considered it but I know at least the necklace has been sold and seen worn on none other than Anna Wintour! I also didn't want more purple and thought the diamonds would balance it out nicely :)

    2. We are dreaming of course - but not with the Nazim of Hyderabad necklace I believe. It still exists and Kate has even worn it - although not to best effect. (With her hair hanging over it.) It's the matching tiara that doesn't exist. (Sob!!!) The queen still wears the brooches from it and the diamonds went to that - in my opinion - that awful ruby tiara (many sobs!) The fact the brooches exist mean it could be remade someday.
It's true it's believed that the oriental circlet is reserved for queen's and consorts but there's always the possibility of change. I don't think there's any such restriction on the Alexandra Kokoshinik. It's true that the Queen Mary Fringe has mostly been used as a wedding tiara but that doesn't preclude it from being used otherwise. As the queen winds down her duties and is likely to wear fewer tiaras, I see no reason for the fringes not to be used. Camilla is likely to use one of them but since there are two similar ones, Kate could use the other.

I do agree Camilla's not likely to loan to the Greville - if only because she probably will wear it herself but it never hurts to ask. I think there might be more acceptance of Kate wearing the Delhi Durbar - we aren't sure protests are the reason Camilla only wore it once - it didn't really suit her. I do have doubts about the 5 Aquamarine tiara only because it's more or less on permanent loan to Sophie - and she needs something. Since aquamarines suit both Kate and Meghan - a aquamarine tiara would seem very useful - sadly the queen's choice of design for hers is neither a thing of beauty nor easy to wear - perhaps it could be remade someday. (She last wore it to the Spanish banquet.)

As for the Strathmore - for heaven's sake, let's get it fixed - a floral tiara would be lovely with many of these gowns. (Since it's a York tiara, there's a very long shot it could appear at Eugenie's wedding - although her mum's tiara is more likely.)

My own choice - the Queen Mary Sapphire bandeau may not exist anymore either - there have been questions raised - but I'm hopeful - nothing is certain here. The appearance of Meghan's wedding tiara shows there's more out there than we realize.

But some things seem truly gone such as the amethyst tiara. (many, many sobs) that would have gone so well with Rebecca's lovely choice. Julia would love to be head of a tiara restoration project that would see the amethyst, the Nazim tiara, and Strathmore brought back to life by being /remade/repaired/repurchased or recreated.

Julia also wants to see an official jewel foundation like the Swedes have so no future monarch can commit some of the jewel atrocities of our present queen who is a wonderful woman but who has committed some serious tiara crimes. I would also like to see jewellery rotated and loaned as the Swedes do, so Kate and Meghan and Sophie and others - Louise in the future? Charlotte? won't be limited to a couple of tiaras.

I do think the sapphire loop necklace a lovely and realistic possibility for an underused piece and the fact the Khalid necklace has been loaned before means it could be again. But the ruby bandeau loan last time surprised and pleased me - even if I didn't completely love the choice of dress with it - so I do think real surprises are possible at this banquet - even seeing one of our choices worn!!

    3. LOL at "serious tiara crimes." Have to agree with you there. Is it just me or were the 80s a rough time for jewelry? - KJ

Honestly, and sadly, I think it's more The Queen that is bad for jewelry. She has redesigned quite a few, and most not successfully! Oh well, she has lots of other strengths!

    5. Rebecca-Sweden,
I weep when I think that the lovely Nizam of Hyderabad tiara was dismantled to make the Burmese Ruby. I hope one day that clunker is dismantled and remade into something fit to wear.

    6. I am so impressed with Patricia's and Julia's knowledge about the royal jewels. Julia I would certainly appoint you to be part of the tiara restoration committee. I also agree that the Queen should not have been allowed to remake and take apart any royals jewels. As has been said, she is a remarkable woman, but not all her redesigns have been successful. As for loaning jewels to other members or the royal family, here is my proposal. There should be a catalogue of all gems with colourful photos and complete descriptions available to all the royal ladies. If you are allowed to stand on the balcony for Trooping the Colour you qualify. Then any one of them, can request any piece of jewellery, at anytime. First come first served, unless Her Majesty the Queen has use for it on a certain day. And even "lesser" members of the family should be able to wear the gems for special occasions. With so much invested in these jewels, it is a shame they are not worn as much as possible.

      Delete
    7. I'd like to see the Nizam restored. The brooches from the roses in it still exist and are worn by the queen. Even if Camilla and Kate turn out to be major brooch wearers - hopefully Kate will as she will some day have a major collection at her disposal - there are a lot of similar rose brooches - so the Nizam ones could go back into a tiara - maybe there are enough royal loose diamonds floating about so the ruby wouldn't have to be dismantled. (Although not sure it would be missed - did anyone choose it this time? I can't remember. I think it has been paired with interesting gown ideas in the past but it certainly isn't going to be versatile in the future.)

    8. Thank you for your compliment, Laura. The royal jewels are a fascinating subject. As for the Queen not being allowed to change things, the ruby tiara is made of stones from two of her wedding presents. There are restrictions on what she can do with the collection earmarked for queens, but the Queen can have her own private property redesigned if she decides she wants something different. I am really not much more fond of the Nizam tiara, given its shape, than the ruby tiara, which is slightly gaudy, but that is personal preference. As for the Brazilian gift aquamarines, the jewelers have had to use a lot of very large stones, and one that is mammoth. I like the shape of that tiara; I wish the huge aquamarine were used somewhere else. The sapphire necklace tiara is not bad, and there had really never been a satisfactory sapphire tiara. Even the Victorian one owned by her aunt's family is pretty small. The Queen needed to fill in, as her inherited tiaras were diamond, diamond with pearls, diamond with emeralds. She will leave a group of tiaras made with colored stones that other queens can modify if they wish.

    9. I'm not sure I agree on the subject of sapphire tiaras - or on the Nizam whose memory I love. My personal favourite of sapphire tiaras is sadly not in a royal collection - the Barberini, but I do have a weakness for floral tiaras - just not spiky red roses.

      http://orderofsplendor.blogspot.com/2015/02/tiara-thursday-barberini-sapphire-tiara.html

The most famous sapphire tiara though belongs to the Dutch royal family and was worn by Maxima on the inauguration. It's not a big favourite of mine but I'm in a minority - it's done very well in a recent OSS poll. I doubt it will appear on this visit but I suppose it could. (I can't remember if Maxima has worn it after the inauguration but previous queens used it multiple times.) Maxima also has a smaller sapphire tiara - a necklace conversion like the queen's. The Dutch are quite rich in tiaras although none of them are favourites of mine - my tiara taste is rather eclectic.

I personally liked the Victoria sapphire which belonged to the Harewoods until recently - now in the V and A after much contretemps - but it is tiny. I'm still sorry it left the mainline family - it would have been nice for Kate and its history is indisputable.

There have been better sapphire tiaras come to auction than what the queen purchased to go with her sapphire set but of course it's all a matter of timing what's available.

I seem to remember the aquamarine looked before the revamps. The shape of the stones is part of the problem - the Hesketh aquamarine shows what a difference that can make.

Thanks for your mention Laura - but I'm no expert - I just read OSS who does the work.

    10. Thanks for reminding us of the current wherabouts of the Harewood sapphire tiara, Julia. It is very beautiful, but very small.

  19. Correcting what I said, it was the Hyderabad tiara that was dismantled; the necklace exists, and Kate has worn it. Also, the Russian sapphire brooch was suggested for a beautiful navy gown, not the royal blue from India. It would be lovely with several of the blue dresses that have been chosen by our designers. I think it is probably true that Kate will soon require brooches to secure the ribbons of orders.

    1. Typed my comment before I saw this - we can breathe a sigh of relief it does exist - and I'm campaigning for the tiara to be recreated someday - with the brooches still in existence (and with so many similar brooches also around) it seems possible.

Rebecca I agree that amethyst necklace - or the one the queen still owns - would be too much with your purple gown. I would have loved the amethyst tiara with it though and would like to think that tiara exists and like the necklace is out there being loaned. (I doubt Anna owns that necklace although I don't know.) There has been speculation that tiara was broken up though - I sincerely hope not!

      Delete
    2. I am a bit confused about the amethysts. Was the necklace the Queen wore in Portugal seen on Anna Wintour? I recall that the Queen Mother is supposed to have sold amethysts. Apparently she considered them mourning jewels. Though I agree the necklace would be too much, I do like those earrings.

I especially like the suggestion of wearing the ruby bandeau necklace with the Oriental circlet; they look lovely together. Now that they are owned by the same person, that could happen eventually.

Rebuilding the Nizam of Hyderabad tiara is an interesting idea, and it would provide another tiara suitable for princesses. I hope its shape would be a bit different, as I never liked the way it sat on the Queen’s head. Maybe she didn’t either.

Should the Queen really be blamed for the designs of pieces created or reworked during her reign, or should the work of her jewelers be critiqued? She had to approve what was done of course, but I don’t think design is a central interest of hers. I actually find the 20th century pieces striking, but I know others dislike many of them.

      Delete
    3. Exception to what I said about the 20th century jewelers, I don’t like what they did to the Delhi Durbar tiara. Its spread apart angle looks wrong to me.

      Delete
    4. I do believe the idea of that red rose ruby tiara has to have come from - or at least been strongly supported by the queen. I wouldn't have minded so much if another far more elegant tiara hadn't been destroyed for the making of it. Here's a link for what Patricia and I am talking about for the curious.

      http://thecourtjeweller.com/2017/04/the-burmese-ruby-tiara.html

As for the sapphire tiara - a not too artistic transformation of a necklace - it looks like it came from a tiara budget sale! (Although used to pretty effect with the Erdem above.) I also think something better could happen to those Brazilian aquamarines.

Royal jewels are a conundrum to me. I want to see them protected - mourn the loss of jewels that were given to cadet branches by Victoria, Alexandra and Mary and ended up auctioned or in a museum or even 'disposed of' like the tiara from Alexandra's set of diamond and pearls. The queen mum or the queen (depending on which version is true) sold off that amethyst tiara because it looking like mourning - but it would have been stunning on Kate and the mourning idea is completely dated. The royal family has too few historic jewels already, thanks to that Hannover debacle, so it can't afford to lose more treasures. That's why I have supported the idea of a royal jewel foundation.

I do think there are modern jewels from the collection that would tremendously suit Kate and Meghan whilst some of the more traditional jewels will eventually look good on Louise hopefully. I love the idea of royal ladies sharing to that they aren't limited to one or two tiaras or necklaces - especially the more minor royal ladies and we get to see a variety of royal jewels more often as happens in Sweden and Luxembourg.

At the same time, even as I talk of protecting jewels, I can't imagine a single younger royal lady wearing that ruby breastplate of Camilla's (which I personally think is ghastly.) But sometime soon, these 'modern' jewels will be historic too - so my feelings are very mixed - or perhaps selective!

      Delete
    5. I do agree with you about the ruby breastplate! And I wasn't very fond of Kate's ruby necklace, either.

      Delete
    6. And now we are into the 21st century. Hopefully those two pieces are not harbingers of its jewels.

  20. Unknown - that is a very elegant look. I would be happy to see the Cartier tiara return to use. The McQueen dress is beautiful and its use of lace reminds me of a dress Diana wore several times that looked very demure but used panels of lace for glamour.

Kim - that gold is just dazzling and yet that Temperley - and underused designer - looks very comfortable to wear and very Kate. Rubies are the perfect choice. Kate would glow in that.

Rebecca of Sweden - thoughtful and fabulous as always. I share your love of purple on Kate and the shape of that gown is very State Banquet. I would love to see some of the queen's amethysts put into use and the idea of attaching that brooch to the collet necklace is brilliant. If only the amethyst tiara remained. (Sob!) Your choice of hairstyle is great - I'm seeing a strong hint that people here - myself included - would like to see Kate in a fringe tiara.

Kelly - We know Maxima is likely to come up with something dazzling and that green caped gown would be perfect for Kate to hold her own. It's stunning and I love the Kiki earrings with it.

Hope - that blue Marchesa would make Kate look like a fairy princess. The bodice seems meant for an Order's ribbon. Hint. Hint. The Cartier is lovely with it and I love the idea of using the King Khalid necklace that was a loan to Diana. A nice link - in an original way.

Caroline from Montana - that white gown is so regal and yet now heavy like the queen's gown. If ever we have an opening of Parliament with tiaras worn again (here's hoping) and Kate attends - that could be used as well. It's simply beautiful and I would love to see the Strathmore return.

Nicole J. Maxima is so bold both is style and jewels - this Packham would be a great choice - a stunning surprise. We all expect Kate's Packham gowns to look a certain way - beautiful, conservative, with diamanate and this is different and would show off her wonderful figure. I love the idea too of some of the queen's staid jewels coming to life with a daring gown - as long as they were lengthened properly for Kate's neck.

Melissa - That gown is wonderfully sophisticated. I loved the idea of pairing that simple style with the Delhi Durbar. That tiara's only been seen once on Camilla over a decade ago and it really didn't suit her. Since Maxima is never afraid to bring out the biggest jewels, this would seem to be the ideal time for a return on Kate. (That would be a great premiere gown too.)

Beth - As I said above, I love the delicacy of that gown and the floating transparent jacket. It would be heavenly in blue and would look lovely with aquamarines - an interesting mixture of aquamarines and blue topaz - and I'd love to see Kate in aquamarine tiara.

Stephanie - That grey gown is glamourous and would have a lovely flow walking into the banquet and the draped bodice would look wonderful when Kate was sitting. Pairing diamonds and pearls with that silvery grey is inspired.

All these looks are amazing. I'll comment on the next in a few hours.

  23. Looking at the next styles:

Anon 23 - That's a very dramatic red dress and with the Queen Mary Fringe Tiara, and the train in the back of the gown, it would create a sensation. I love the idea of the Jardine Star worn in Kate's hair although I'm not sure the queen would part with it, even as a loan.

Royalfan - After your beautiful sedate award-winning blue velvet for the Chinese banquet - you mean to pop some eyes out here! Maxima would be green with envy at Kate in that bronze gown - and that shade of orange might work on her. As for the yellow diamonds - dream on...unless you know some Middle Eastern sheikhs.

Eriq L. This is a lovely gown - one Kate would be very comfortable with and would be perfect for a State Banquet - with a detailed bodice for when Kate is sitting. That green shade would be excellent on her and is a little unusual for Kate.

Heather. I'm massively impressed by your choice - Edwin Oudshoorn is a Dutch designer I'm not familiar with - and not one I've hear associated with Maxima - I wonder if she's worn anything of his. Teal is a great colour on Kate and this is a beautiful gown - well paired with aquamarines.

Ruth - I believe you're right - this lovely coral Packham gown would be a good tribute to the House of Orange whilst being a shade that Kate could easily wear. The back is very striking and the dress looks to be of lovely material. I like the choice of the Kiki wedding earrings.

Sophie O. I often wonder at royal ladies' choices when it comes to Erdem because he has a lot of beautiful designs they never seem to choose. This floral dress is one of them - it's a style Kate would be at home with and the material is very pretty - and a nice tribute to the Netherlands. I think the sapphires would look lovely with it and it would be nice for the queen to pass on these gifts from her father (except for the tiara) to a new generation.

Anonymous - When you dream you dream big! That is a beautiful gown - it would be lovely in velvet and whilst the leg might need to be covered for the banquet - it would dazzle at a premiere. The tiara I'd love to see but whether the queen would loan the Cullinan brooch - well, we can hope!

Tiara Watcher - Should there be a repeat, this would be an excellent choice - and one that would contrast nicely with a Dutch order should Kate receive it. It's shade reminds me of the gown Maxima wore for the king's inauguration. It is a gown worth repeating - with sapphire earrings.

Sofy - I have a soft spot for this gown because it's such a wonderful platform for the Dubai sapphire looped necklace - which is one of my top pieces I'd like to see Kate loaned. It never suited the queen - it was too long for her (and the length could be restored but hopefully not with the earrings!) Even shortened it wasn't right but I'm thinking it would be ideal for Kate. The neckline and sweep of this gown would suit it and I'd love to see the Queen Mary Fringe, another underused piece on Kate too.

Alaina - I'm so happy you chose this gown by Taminiau - it's one of my favourites! He's a great designer who deserves to be better know and has done some outstanding gowns for Maxima and Mathilde. It would be a lovely tribute to the Dutch for Kate to wear one of his gowns - I'm thinking there was a recent exhibit of his designs - and this gown whilst too girlish for Maxima would be perfect on Kate. The Strathmore would really set the floral design off and the citrines would be a great choice for that gown.

Such a dazzling collection of styles - I'm looking forward to looking at the details of the last ones in this group.

  25. Julia from Leominster9 August 2018 at 12:36

Finally, we have a lovely group - some traditional, some very on the edge.
Kiwi Girl - That red Mouret you chose has proved very popular for good reasons - had I seen it I would have been really tempted. A British based designer, and one that gives a very contemporary vibe that fits with what Maxima often wears yet is a look Kate's comfortable with. But the reason I'm particularly drawn to it is whilst it's very modern, something about the shape and sleeves, reminds me of the clothes in Dutch paintings such as Vermeer. It also would show off the bandeau necklace better than that pink dress Kate wore before.
Rebecca, I'm pleased to see a Reem Acra choice, a designer who would suit royals so well. This would be a lovely state banquet gown in a colour that works well for Kate. The softer bodice would show off the Nizam necklace - hopefully lengthened a bit - better than the Packham dress worn before. Kate has the shoulders for this dress.
Gabi - When I first saw a version of this McQueen, it seem to say State Banquet. I love your idea of doing it in navy which would really show off the diamante shoulders. Since she's done Packham and Marchesa, it would be nice to give another designer a chance (even though we're seeing a lot of wonderful Packham and Marchesa choices!) That gown with the diamante on the shoulders would really make the Lotus tiara sparkle. A very good choice.
Katie - as I just said to Gabi, this gown in its variations seems meant for state banquets. I love it in the cream which makes the diamante shoulders sparkle - and with the cape effect - it's a beautiful gown. Accenting it with the aquamarine would give a nice pop of colour - and the 5 Aquamarine tiara really picks up with its scrolling the shoulder diamante. I like this gown a lot in this colour - it's very regal.
Ivy - I'm thrilled someone chose a Vivienne Westwood gown - this banquet seems a perfect time for a choice of an iconic British designer - one outside the British Big Four of Packham, Mouret, McQueen and Temperley who have dominated Kate's looks - and this choice is both very regal in the cream and very classic in style - a look that would really suit Kate and show off her shoulders. the idea of picking of the House of Orange colours with citrines is excellent.
B - A time back, I saw a lovely vintage Hartnell on First Dibs, all layers of blue tulle - and thought how perfect it would be for Kate. This modern gown picks up that idea beautifully with the floating panels and the sheer back that would be simply gorgeous. It would look amazing on the procession in. A lot of us, myself included, are hoping to see a fringe tiara and I hope your idea for a swept up chignon is picked up by Kate's hairdresser.
Anja - that is an incredibly exciting and outre choice - with a great use of the Dutch colours. It would really move the Queen Mum's earrings and the Lotus flower into the 21st century. I like how you've kept the accessories very simple.
Amanda - Whilst a lot of us are thinking about Dutch history, your choice reminds us what a vibrant and modern city Amsterdam is. Herrera is always a great royal choice and the idea of picking up the orange pop at the hem of the skirt is terribly clever. It's a great chance for Kate to also bring out the Dutch contribution to modern art and use of colour.
Frances - after several edgy possibilities here - this is a lovely classic look that I suspect Kate would feel at home with - a gown that would show off her beautiful figure and shoulder and uses a good mixture of jewels she's worn. I particularly like the idea of the queen's choker worn with an off-the-shoulder dress that would show it off - and this underused piece works well with the lotus tiara. It's an elegant looks that lets the jewels shine.
It would be so thrilling to see Kate in any one of the looks in this post. (And interesting to see what how near we come to what she does choose.) I'm very excited to see the next group.

    3. Thanks Kiwi - Everything is so contentious everywhere right now, I think it's lovely to have a feature that brings people together so much. It also shows me that royal followers at least still want to see gowns and jewels worn and traditional banquets. (A hint for coming tours for the young royals.)

  26. From this group my favorite is the Zac Posen and the ones I can most see Kate actually wearing (not necessarily to the Dutch banquet but to any event calling for a gown) are the Jenny Packham Windemere and the Roland Mouret Gerzon gown.

  29. These all are such beautiful choices. Wonderful job, all! That purple bespoke McQueen gown is regal all over,Rebecca. Eriq's green Marchesa fantasy is just drop-dead exquisite. If only Kate would. Hope's blue off the shoulder Marches corset gown wuld look absolutely spectacular on Meghan too, especially with the delicate tiara design. Those are my favorites, but everything is so gorgeous.

  30. I don't have a favourite - I can't have a favourite - there are too many wonderful variations. Some may be more practical for Kate than others, some may be more likely than others, some might be better suited for premieres, but all show amazing creativity, care and reflection. And there's always a chance one will appear - we saw it happen in India and with a choice we might not have expected - so anything is possible!!

Personally, I do like to see royal ladies in British fashions although in this case Dutch designers would be a lovely tribute choice and there are American designers - Lhuilliar, Acra, de la Renta and Herrera amongst others, who simply do marvellous gowns so I would find it impossible to eliminate those. The exciting thing for me with these submissions are all the discoveries of gowns and accessories and the pairings made with jewels.

Surfer girl - Pip and I miss you - hope you are reading at least. He think Kate should pick a dress that matches her spaniel - I'm sure Pippin would say she should choose a black gown!

Kate has worn things suggested here by our group of commenters before, so who knows? She wore a Sentaler sweater on the Canadian tour and a dress once....it escapes me now but it was a red dress, I believe, worn on the Polish tour last summer if I’m remembering correctly. When we first did this three years ago, I chose a skinny leg trouser with a black and white print, and not too long after that, Kate wore a skinny trouser with a print for the first time. I take full credit for that lol!

      Delete
    3. As well you should Pam! She also wore a dress chosen - I believe in the first 'stylist' series in India. I can't remember who chose it but it was lovely to see it appear.

      Delete
    4. That might have been the red (maybe a bit on the red-orange side) dress I was thinking of....I remembered it being worn on one of the tours but couldn’t remember which one.

    5. Someone selected the Kate wear the Erdem metallic lace dress for the Canadian tour and she later did for a Buckingham Palace reception. I chose a Mackage Coat for Kate during the Canadian tour and turns out Meghan wore it the first time she went to Ireland.

I look forward to seeing the new ones too. :) My favorites from this group were Kim in Oregon's gold dress set, and Caroline in Montana's white gown with the Strathmore Rose tiara. That rumor of the state of the tiara has been going around but I've never seen any source. Which is why I would LOVE to see it, if only in a picture or museum, just to know the actual state of it!

      Delete
    2. I really wish people would stop repeating those stories about the Strathmore Rose tiara. It was photographed for a book and loaned to a museum exhibition a decade ago and it was perfectly fine. as we've seen with Meghan's wedding tiara, just because the royals aren't seen wearing a tiara doesn't mean it's in bad condition. I'm pretty sure the royals can afford to pay a jeweler to look after their tiaras.

      Delete
    3. Ivy I hope you're right because that tiara ranks very high on my favourites list and if it should appear at a coming royal wedding it would make me very happy.

My best understanding is the frame is thought to be a bit fragile which wouldn't affect an exhibit but might make it hard to wear - perhaps it was stretched out because as it was worn as a bandeau around the forehead in the twenties style. But as you pointed out - there are highly skilled royal jewellers who could repair it should some royal lady wish to wear it. So I cherish hopes it will appear again.

      Delete
    4. The tiara came with two different frames, so it could be worn across the forehead and the normal way. I’m sure they can make a different frame should it be needed.

  34. Totally off topic, but does anyone remember that student who won the shoe design contest a few years ago? I thought Kate was going to wear the winning pair, but it seems like that's not the case.

  35. Thank you for another one of your stylists' submission exercises! I love seeing all the beautiful outfits that all of you come up with. Each and every one of these gowns is fabulous and would look smashing on Kate. But I based my top five on what I feel Kate would actually wear, based on her past looks and preferences for this type of occasion.

    1. Katie - Perfect in every way! The light blue jewels are a nod to the Dutch colors, as Kate is always so thoughtful in choosing colors to fit the country she is honoring.
    2. Julia - I think Kate would come out of her comfort zone for this one. Its different from what she usually has worn to these events, but it is a fabulous, edgy look.
    3. Kim in Oregon - Love this dress! It looks just like Kate, and has a good amount of sparkle for the ocassion. I would add a diamond bracelet and dangly earrings too.
    4. Rebecca - it's a little daring with the bare shoulders, but Kate would look oh so regal in this.
    5. Tiara Watcher - This India "rewear" is one of the most beautiful gowns Kate has ever worn, and I could see her bringing it out for this event. (Although I secretly wish she would go for something a little more edgy).
Again, thank you all, it has been fun and can't wait for the next batch.

  39. Time for that great Julia surprise moment - her hubby Mr Leo's choices: I didn't tell him which one was mine and it got a definite no!

Mr Leo isn't a republican but he's not so much a royalist either so I was startled how traditional his choices for Kate were. His top five with no help from me:

    1. Caroline from Montana's white Packham gown - he liked the transparent jacket that still showed bare shoulders.

    2. Sofy's McQueen Blue gown - this was almost a tie with Rebecca's blue in third place - I had no idea Leo was such a shoulder man.

    3. Rebecca's blue Acra gown. Interesting as the blue gowns became softer (the Marchesa and the Posen,) they didn't find as much favour with Leo.

    4. Eriq L. Green Packham. Leo thought that green would look good on Kate and it was 'not too flowery." Julia's choice on the other hand he thought looked like a bed coverlet!

5-6 A tie between Sophie O's Erdem which he really liked and Rebecca of Sweden's purple McQueen.

Should he and Julia be invited to the banquet -- he pronounced he would choose the Erdem for me. Wonders never stop. (I think I'm a little too old for that Erdem but I have a floral day dress he likes which perhaps motivated his choice. It's nice to know I'm not old in Leo's eyes. Personally I'd choose the Oscar de la Renta or one of the Mourets for me. )

So there is one man's viewpoint.

It is even more impressing to see all the outfits put together, well done everybody!

I quickly want to comment on my top 3 looks from this batch:

    Rebecca Sweden:
Purple is my favourite colour and it looks really pretty on Kate, so I love your whole look. Also, the full skirt of the gown you picked is really princess-esque.

    Caroline in Montana:
I guess everybody wants to see Kate wear the Strathmore Rose tiara, and I couldn’t agree more, it is so beautiful! Here’s to hoping it is still in good condition and will be seen on Kate soon.
The Packham gown you chose is so pretty as well, it gives me fairy vibes.

    Eriq L:
Green is such a pretty colour on Kate, it compliments her eyes so well. This gown is very much within her style, I could really see her wear it. And the bracelet is so delicate. What a splendid look!

A few dresses that I really liked:
Royalfan, Sofy, Alaina from New Jersey, Rebecca

I LOVE 2 options as I believe they both would look incredible on Katherine, and suitable for this State Visit in particular. ROYALFAN one shoulder gown from Armani only I would pair with Queen Marys fringe tiara. It's an incredible subtle floral gown and a color we have not seen on Kate. With some bronzy makeup - gorgeous. I also adored ERIQL green Marchessa Notte gown. The color looks incredible on her. Would be a shame not to include a floral element...

All so very thought out selections, and beautifully put together on this blog. About royal orders: I have long thought that the Queen has in mind for Charles to give Duchess of Cambridge an order when he is Regent. Granted, it would have a likeness of him on it instead of her! Not to continue to be ghoulish, but what might happen to the order that Camilla has from the queen when the Duchess of Cornwall passes?
Also, to my knowledge Eugenie and Beatrice don’t have orders from her either. Not sure, given how Andrew feels, she would give an order to Catherine and not to her grandchildren.
Thank you Charlotte, for providing a space for musings such as these, to take one’s mind off of one’s troubles!

    1. Eve, I've thought the same about the royal family order for awhile. I think it would be awkward within the family if Kate got one and the York sisters did not. While B&E do charity work and have made appearances with TQ all their lives, I realize they aren't working royals (although it's not clear that is their choice.) But since the criteria the monarch uses aren't known to us, I don't think we can argue we somehow know the Yorks don't qualify. I expect TQ has discussed this with Charles and the plan is for him to award one to Kate and for TQ not to give family orders to anyone in the generation of her grandchildren. The ivory issue could be a concern too but I don't find that a very persuasive argument myself for a number of reasons. Of course, I could be completely wrong, maybe Kate will be wearing one at this next state occasion!

      Delete
    2. Eve from Vermont12 August 2018 at 16:35

Good point about the ivory, because the order can be made with existing ivory in the collection....I think there is no new ivory being used in England?
I remember reading that orders are given completely at the Queen’s discretion, and are meant to convey familial like closeness (whether the recipient is related or not) as opposed to the other orders, which have certain rules. The Queen might give an order to B or E before ever giving one to Catherine. I don’t think it has to do with service/work. I think of Sophie having one because she spends so much time with the Queen, plus she appears so often as a representative of the Queen at all of those European Royal weddings she and Edward attend, so it def means something for her to be wearing a likeness of the Queen when attending events. I too, could be completely wrong about everything! Fun to speculate though!

      Delete
    3. Charles would not award an order as Regent (if that ever happens), but as King he can certainly give Kate his own order, whether or not the Queen gives Kate hers. Keep in mind that the Queen herself wears her father's and grandfather's family orders; Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother wore three, since they also wore the Queen's.

      Delete
    4. Right Patricia I. I meant he would award to Kate later when he becomes King. Of course, people can and do wear multiple royal family orders but I somehow expect Kate's first to come from Charles.

I meant to add my comments about the looks the other day but had a surgical procedure that is taking a bit longer to bounce from than I thought it would. Anyway here are my comments after seeing all the looks put together with the pictures!
Unknown - I love that black lace panel gown and the lace makes the otherwise simple gown have a little kick! Kate would look beautiful!
Kim In Oregon - Kate normally goes for more low key than the sequin gown but I keep thinking back to that gown she wore not long after having a baby. I think the pairing with the Oriental Circlet is inspired!
Rebecca - Sweden - I love this so much! Seeing it all together makes me love it even more. I adore the amethyst pendant being suspended from the necklace! The dress is just so regal and the great wall of diamonds is always fun.
Kelly - Every time I scroll past your look I can't help but think how well Kate would look in a cape gown like this. She would really look magnificent in this gown.
Hope from USA - Now that I see your look all together I can't help but think how young and spunky this look is. It would be so much fun on Kate.
Caroline in Montana - That really is a lovely dress and the Strathmore Rose seems to be made for that dress.
Nicole J - You wanted a bold look and you certainly came up with one. Those jewels would definitely make her stand out.
Melissa M - A simple structured gown like this would really allow the jewelry to shine. I love Kate in sapphires.
Beth W7372 - Those topaz and/or aquamarines would be so lovely with the dress. I look at the looks centered around this dress and think I have found my favorite look with this dress only to see the next and be like wait!
Stephanie MW - I have this dress pinned on a couple of my Pinterest boards. It would look very nice with the CLK Tiara and the overlay adds so much drama! Love!
Anon23 - I love the fun of backless dresses. From the front they look so demure but turn around and BAM! The earrings and brooch would be lovely with that tiara!
Royalfan - This would be a hard color to pull off but I think it would be beautiful on Kate. I would swoon if Kate showed up in a new tiara and by new I mean BRAND NEW! I also love the diamond bangles.
Eriq L - Kate looks so lovely in green and i really like the embroidery on top. It adds texture and fun to the gown!
Julia - I so want to see that tiara on Kate. She would look fabulous in it and have been crossing my fingers that she gets at least a family order soon. The shoes are so much fun too!
Heather - The more I see this dress the more I like it. The way the embroidery flows into the skirt is reminiscent of a peplum and Kate likes to wear peplum. The color is beautiful.

    Comment #2:
Ruth - I love the back of this dress. The beading is exquisite and the earrings match it beautifully!
Sophie O - I would love to see those sapphires on Kate. They are such beautiful sapphires.
Anonymous - I REALLY like this gown. Appropriate but so much fun and the ruffle/peplum like detail adds so much interest. Absolutely adore the great wall of diamonds!
Tiara Watcher - I never realized how perfectly the Queen Mother's Sapphire Earrings go with the dress from India. They would be perfect together.
Sofy - That dress has the perfect neckline for the necklace you chose. It would be stunning if Kate wore this look!
Alaina from NJ - Taminiau is really talented. The dress is beautiful and your tiara and dress match is amazing!
Kiwi Gal - I like this dress a lot. It is very much a Kate dress and I can totally picture her in it.
Rebecca - Sigh. What a complete princess look. Love it so much.
Gabi K - I love the changes you would make to the dress. When I look at it I can almost see it with a shoulder train added that just flows out behind Kate.
Katie - Another look that is so complete and all the items just work together. Aquamarines would be stunning on Kate.
Ivy - love that you used your accessories to give the nod to the visiting country. With Kate's hair and eye color those jewels would be fabulous.
B - Love this dress! I said before that I have it on my Pinterest and it is on a board I have dedicated to things I would like to see Kate in. I also love the earrings.
Anja - The more I see this the more it reminds me of some of the Beulah gowns Kate has worn. Love!
Amanda - I love the juxtaposition of the modern lines of the dress and the classical, feminine feel of the tiara and earrings.
Frances - I have always thought Kate looks very well in Mouret clothing. This would be lovely on her and reminds me of the off the shoulder blue she wore before the India tour.

  60. Would love to see Duchess Catherine in the Ray Temperly sequined gown. With her height and the color it is made for her. Pair it with the Oriental circulet tiara, the Queen’s diamond bracelet and the diamond chandelier earrings. Her sequined clutch and her Jimmy Choo heels. She would be a glimmering goddess.

  61. Yes! A goddess indeed. She has the height and exquisite figure to rock that choice and many others. SO impressed with the selection of gowns, tiaras, shoes, jewellery, etc. - I spent a long time drooling over them. Thanks.
