Kate's Berry Festive for Christmas Day Service at Sandringham

The Cambridges enjoyed Christmas at Sandringham with the Royal family.

As always, members of the family made their annual walk to St Mary Magdalene Church for Christmas Day service.

Prince Charles led the group closely followed by William, Kate, Meghan and Harry. Prince Philip was notably absent, however the Palace said he is in "perfectly good health". The Duchess of Cornwall is unwell with a cold and was also unable to make the service.

The festive break in Norfolk offers a chance for the family to regroup and enjoy a few days together on the scenic estate. It's an opportunity to reflect on the year that's passed; it's been one of milestones and celebrations with the arrival of Prince Louis, the Sussexes' wedding and baby news, and Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank's wedding. William and Kate like to alternate Christmas between both families as often as possible, and although it was thought they might opt to spend it in Bucklebury this year, they chose to head to Norfolk. It's understood they will travel to the Middletons shortly and perhaps ring in the New Year with Kate's family.

We saw an abundance of photos of the Duchesses en route to the service. Below, Kate and Meghan chatting.

The Earl and Countess of Wessex with their children Louise and James.

Autumn Phillips and Princess Beatrice followed closely by Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank.

The arrivals video below offers a good look at those in attendance.

Her Majesty was resplendent in a soft dove grey coat with fuchsia pink trim.

The parish church of St Mary Magdalene is one of exceptional historic interest, with memorials to many members and relations of the Royal family, from Queen Victoria onward. It is considered one of the finest carrstone buildings in existence, and dates back in its present form to the 16th century. The sumptuously decorated chancel with its carved angels frames the silver altar and reredos presented to Queen Alexandra by the American Rodman Wanamaker as a tribute to King Edward VII.  He also presented her with the silver pulpit and a silver 17th-century Spanish processional cross. Other notable features include a Florentine marble font, a Greek 9th-century font and stained glass from the 16th century onward. Aside from Christmas celebrations, Princess Diana and Princess Eugenie were baptised there, and William and Kate chose it as the venue for Princess Charlotte's christening.

The royals departing.

You can see Kate and Meghan curtsying at 1.40 in this video.

One of my favourite aspects of Christmas Day at Sandringham is seeing the crowds turn out; often the same local faces year after year. Seeing the royals arriving and departing has become a tradition for a number of royal watchers. I think the royals greatly appreciate the gesture, and it's one of the reasons we tend to see them spending as long as they can meeting those waiting.

Kate told well-wishers George and Charlotte were "up very early" to open their gifts from Father Christmas. I imagine there were scenes of joy (and plenty of wrapping paper) before they left Anmer for church.

William revealed it was a 5 am start.

Kate received beautiful flowers.

A video from the walkabout.

There's additional footage in this video filmed by a well-wisher.

Amidst a very difficult month of headlines, there was no doubt in my mind we would see a united front and photos of the Cambridges and Sussexes arriving together as they did last year. An onlooker captured this moment as they returned to the 'big house'. Watch a video here.

The Duchess was Berry Festive in a red Catherine Walker coatdress. I thought it an effortlessly elegant choice and the hue worked perfectly for a seasonal effect. The double-breasted piece features a full skirt and velvet trim on the collar, cuffs and pockets.

It's almost identical to Kate's green Walker coatdress with identical velvet trim detail.

The Duchess teamed the coat with the Jane Taylor Halo Band.

The piece is described: "This wide band shape is synonymous with the 1930’s, perfect for those who wish to add a timeless and classic style to their A/W outfit. In a choice of colours this peach bloom felt halo band in adorned with a delicately twisted bow and curled snake charm on the side."

Kate accessorised with her Asprey Oak Leaf earrings.

And unidentified acorn brooch. Kate's had the piece since at least 2012.

Kate completed the look with her burgundy Gianvito Rossi pumps.

And Mulberry suede clutch.

In case you missed Her Majesty's Christmas speech, the monarch reflected on personal celebrations throughout the year: "It’s been a busy year for my family, with two weddings and two babies – and another child expected soon. It helps to keep a grandmother well occupied." The Queen focused on the importance of respecting each other and overcoming our differences: "Even with the most deeply--held differences, treating the other person with respect and as a fellow human being is always a good first step towards greater understanding." Indeed, the Queen's wise words could be applied to royal watching. It's my hope we'll see a kinder royal community emerge in 2019.

Hope you're all enjoying a wonderful Christmas with your nearest and dearest. This year, I've been reminded it can also be an incredibly painful time for those who have lost a loved one or know someone grieving. Sending good thoughts in particular to those who find it a trying period.

With sincere apologies for the lateness of the post and a word of thanks to those who have been in touch. I've been under the weather for the past couple of weeks and relapsed on Christmas Eve. Thankfully, I'm finally on the mend. Thank you all for bearing with me during this period. To those of you who were checking in yesterday for a new post on the service I'm very sorry. I expect normal posting to resume from here on in.

  1. So glad you are alright - was a bit concerned that something was up with no post yesterday. Good for you taking the time off to get better and thank you for the wonderful commentary as always. I love Kate's coat and headband - they are growing on me- and thought she looked gorgeous. Also loved Will's scarf.

  2. Charlotte, please don’t ever be sorry for anything being “late” on the blog. Everything you do is such a gift for us readers. Merry Christmas!

Also I thought Kate looked wonderful today. I have always wanted to own a Catherine Walker coat.

    3. Hope you are feeling better. While Kate and Meghan appeared friendly, there was not a big show of happiness between the two brothers. William may just have his kids on his mind or other things. I am not always super happy if my child is sick or I am exhausted. But If Meghan did upset Kate, William will not be putting on a happy show. I think he backs Kate 100% and with good reason. She has tried to do everything properly to please the monarchs and the public I think.

  5. First of all, I am so relieved you are okay. You are usually so quick with your posts and I checked this page and MaM all day yesterday and when I saw nothing I was worried. Health comes first and take as much time as you need/want as I've been suffering from a nasty persistent virus too over the holidays and every time I think I'm getting better I get worse.

Quick hits on fashion: a miss for both Kate and Meghan IMO. I HATE KATE'S HEADBANDS. I cannot repeat it enough. I hate it. It swallows her face and makes us not look at her gorgeous hair. I know Anne Boleyn wore them and from the portraits they looked fetching on her but Kate is matching those headbands with very modern dress, and it just looks costumey. I liked her red coat. I will never be a fan of how she often goes "off-matchy matchy" by wearing three different shades of the same color wheel. In this case, there was a mauve headband, a red coat, and burgundy shoes. Match completely, or go for some color contrast.

Meghan had a different problem -- she seems to veer between too-tight non-maternity clothes and wanting to swallow the baby bump with heavy layers. Yesterday was a "let's just swallow this baby bump." The overly boxy, baggy outfit wasn't flattering. Like her boots.

The best dressed was HM. That outfit is perfect -- at 92, she seems to have embraced flirty, fun fashions? The pink trim on the beige coat is just the right degree of festive.

But can we talk about how much the world needed to hear HM's Christmas address? What a soothing, wise address where she addressed important issues in a tactful way, like a real leader. I love how she mentioned the human capacity for good but then mentioned the dark side, the "tribalism" it can bring. I can guess at what she might be referring to but I'll leave those guesses to myself. The personal tone of the address was also a huge difference from the days when she avoided looking directly at the camera and used the royal "we." Loved her mentioning the changes in her family the way any matriarch would. But mostly her plea for kindness and respect is something EVERYONE can take to heart. I'm cross-posting this as MaM. Happy holidays everyone!

    3. I was looking on both blogs as well and I hope that you are feeling better, there has been some nasty things going around and health comes first so sure. I am so so glad to hear you are feeling better.
I loved what Catherine was wearing and what Meghan was wearing, there has been news of a rift between them and I so hope that is not true.
Thank you so much for your amazing posts it is so very much appreciated

    4. Agree with you Mel in SoCal! And I, for one, love the headbands. They must be so much more comfortable to wear than the fascinators. I make jewelry and quilt and a monochromatic palatte provides interest because colors are in the same family but different. True color match from head to toe would be boring as there is nothing to draw the eye. My favorite of Catherine's winter coats though are the tartan ones.

I love the vintage look on Catherine, it is such a classic style and she has the shape to wear those garments to perfection.

Glad you are feeling better, Charlotte. Not a good time of year to be feeling under the weather, especially if you are worrying about everything that needs to be done for the holidays. I hope you have some time off so you can relax and recuperate!

  6. Sadly, Kate’s outfit didn’t really do anything for me. She looked nice, as always. The color was pretty, but I didn’t like the hat and that style CW coatdress was one I hoped we wouldn’t see repeated in another color. :-(
Regardless, I hope everyone had a happy Christmas and I’m glad to hear you’re on the mend, Charlotte.

    1. I agree with you and Ivy Lin (above) re: the headbands(although I don't really hate them, just don't like them on her). Sadly she IS doing what I feared: getting into a rut. When Kate likes or feels comfortable with something, she seems to invariably overuse it. For example, she did this so much with her jeggings/stripped shirt/blazer/wedges outfits that it was nicknamed her "uniform". Her beige sleege heels were also over-used. This is the third time we've seen the headband design and I have to say they just don't do her justice (while I am a fan of classic/retro designs myself--maybe a smaller version would work better for her?). I can even see her trying it with one, maybe two, but now it's three. Catherine Walker coats all look the same: double row of buttons and slanted pockets.

Besides that, I did like the color, although she'd look great in a brighter red too. I'm glad she and her family were healthy for Christmas and sounds like they all had a great time.

      I loved Sophie's coat---fantastic color!!!!

    2. Kate seems to be doing the same thing as the queen. A basic design with tweaks in many colours. I'd imagine the need for as many outfits as they will both have over their lifetimes makes their approach very sensible. As for the Breton shirt and skinny jeans...that's pretty much the uniform of British middle class women.

      Delete
    3. Louise I have assumed the same. Makes getting things made up, having shoes and jewelry and hair styles that work all easier when you need many outfits over many years. Then you can save your time and energy for special occasions. Plus like the Queen she will most likely change her basic "uniform" as she ages, so this is her look now maybe a different type in her mid forties. fifties etc.

  7. (This comment was "composed" in the morning of the event so if parts don't make sense, that's why! And best wishes Charlotte and get better sooooon!!)

Ooooh, Kate looks so christmassy!! I love it!! I love that she's like me and go full out in holiday style around Christmas!! I liked this coat in green but it's truly splendid in red!! And I know some can't stand the fully matching look but I think it's spot on this time :)

At first I thought Kate's hat was another headband. I like her headbands but it would almost be comical by now. But looks like it might be a pillbox and I ADORE pillboxes so I'm soooooo hyped for this look!! Or is it one of those open topped hats? I guess I'll have to wait for better pictues. Aaaand... now I got them.. Open topped... Not as good as a pillbox but not bad enough to make me dislike the look! Either way, I like the styling with the half-up hair! And I love that she has added some matching gloves as well! lus her family brooch!! And the acorn earrings. Nice nod to the Middletons!!

    1. Well ... if you want to analyze yesterday's footage it kind of confirms my suspicion that the rift was NOT between Kate and Meghan. They maybe aren't besties but if you think about it do wives of brothers feud on the regular? Most of the time they aren't even in each others' spheres enough to feud/row. I didn't detect any tension between the two of them in terms of body language.

William and Harry however ... in the footage I saw they didn't interact and the frostiness between them I thought was there even at Louis' christening. I suspect that whatever happened between them is a lot deeper than Meghan jumping into the picture but the closeness they used to have just doesn't seem to be there anymore.

    3. Yes you know I did notice that between the brothers, as I said previously I didn't notice anything between the Duchesses, but yes there does seems to be something not right between William and Harry. How very sad if this is the case.

      Delete
    4. If you go back and really watch video before 2016 of the three of them together, there often wasn't much interaction between William and Harry. There was interaction between William and Catherine and between Harry and Catherine, but often William was distant when Catherine and Harry were chatting or joking.

      Delete
    5. I love watching the videos, especially the interactions between the second and third rows as the queen gets in the car. Interesting that it was Beatrice who rode back to the house with the Queen and Andrew had to walk. It would have been interesting to see if Andrew and Charles walked together. I got completely distracted by William and his scarf. I wanted Catherine to fix it for him. He seemed to be determined to get it fixed just right. Good wishes and sending you virtual honey and tea Charlotte, we've been struggling with allergies or something icky this December too. Hope you are all better fast.

    6. One can not learn anything about the relationships among the so-called fab four from this video footage. The women were obviously trying to be friendly in front of the cameras. The brothers' behavior was neutral as one would expect.

    7. I noticed what seemed to be frostiness or distance between Harry and William as well. The christening footage seemed to show William quite perturbed.

  17. Everyone looked gorgeous! I want to dress like Princess Anne when I'm older, but I live in L.A. so It would never work and I don't think I could convince my husband to retire in England.
I love the Walker coat in berry best, it's something many women do though on a different level buying clothing in every color, for me it's cashmere sweaters, shoes and skirts.
Sophie looked grand and I thought Meghan's hat was pretty, at first glance it looked like a dragonfly. Eugenie was festive in red and I would like a better look at her dress and to Autumn Phillips' hemline I say "no, no no", but the color was beautiful and she is lovely. The men looked elegant and one thing I noticed is that Charles looked so very casual, I wondered if he dithered about going since Camilla is ill. Isla and Savannah looked adorable, I had hoped George and Charlotte would attend but I think the family needed a photo op with the brothers and their wives looking friendly and happy, Harry seemed anything but, IMHO.
I imagine there will be a drought of Catherine events for a few weeks, but I am looking forward to next year with anticipation and hopefully some new photos of darling Louie.

  20. Charlotte, it is such a relief that you are better. And such a full and fascinating post, as always!!

I thought Kate looked striking! And a lot of that has to do with her amazing figure. I wonder if anyone else could wear that coat, including a nonpregnant Meghan, and look so good. I liked the red coat a lot and decided that although I have liked her halo hats, this one made her hair lie down and look dull and did not flatter her face. She and Meghan and the Queen are also the most attractive looking, and they did not disappoint. Kate had some great facial expressions, and the ease with which Meghan touched her made me think this is not the first time. Poor little James looks like he should be sent home to curl up by the fire. He really is quite young.

Kate wore those earrings again -- she has worn this a lot and wonder why. I like them a lot but she has worn them more than usual.

Maybe now we can get back to just being frustrated with the Markles in America!!

So, to get an early start of my resolution:
I'm very glad Charlotte is feeling better and I hope she, and all of you, had a nice Christmas. It was nice to see the Windsor brides walking and chatting together. 28. First things first - Charlotte so happy your lapse was nothing more than being under the weather. I was worried!

Kate was on point yesterday!! GORGEOUS color, cut, shoes. She nailed a Christmas Day ensemble - I even adore the headband, which reminded more of a pillbox hat than a headband anyway. Absolute perfection. I agree with the notion that Kate has truly embraced her role as future Queen Consort this year. For whatever reason.

Her Majesty's speech was timely and I felt, fantastic.

As far as William and Kate choosing to head to Norfolk, I believe they were strongly encouraged to change their plans. It was clear their plans were to spend Christmas with Kate's family. Someone dictated that a public display of unity was in order. Prince Charles is fond of Meghan and she has had a rough go in the press of late. The tension between William and Harry is obvious. Let's hope 2019 brings peace.

    1. How was it clear that they planned to spend Christmas at Bucklebury?

      Delete
    2. I echo anon 6:37. When did they ever indicate they were going to Bucklebury? And I don’t think we have any way of knowing anyone dictated a display of unity. I think it’s just as likely the RF ignores all this gossip.

I think something we need to be very cautious about is that the gossip is at a fever pitch right now for whatever reason. I suspect it is because even the more respected reporters are unfortunately reduced to the lowest common denominators of ads and clicks and traffic. And scandal sells. So honestly I think we have evolved to a point that unless a Royal (or their spokesperson) says it on the record, we can only assume anything else is gossip or conjecture. And as far as I know no one official ever indicated William and Kate were going to Bucklebury and changed plans. History has also shown they don’t actually alternate years. This seems to be a myth that has held on but I think they’ve gone to her side twice in their marriage. My bet is now that they have Amner her family is there.

So this isn’t directed at any one commenter specifically and I am grateful for the tone and kindness on this blog. It is a rare bright spot in internet culture and that is a credit to Charlotte and the commenters. But I do think we should all be wary of gossip vs fact. The media is stirred up over the Royals right now, I would assume it just goes in cycles and phases and will die down eventually.

    3. I heard Carole Middleton say in her interview that she was looking forward to having her family together on Christmas and they were considering moving the large meal to lunchtime given the “little ones”. Am I the only one who heard this?

      Delete
    4. I don’t see why they can’t all be together at Anmer and still be consistent with what Carol said. Although I don’t remember this quote. I think it’s likely Kate’s family is taking care of the kids through Christmas and perhaps nannies are given the day off. They know that mom and dad have to step out for a bit. I wouldn’t call it work exactly but it’s not that far off what many working families have to figure out on holidays. And it’s possible Kate and William only do church with his family. There are tons of options here but I really think the least likely is that they were forced to change all plans in order to vaguely address gossip.

      Delete
    5. If Charles wanted to fan the flames of any tension between Kate and Meghan he would insist that Kate change her plans of spending Christmas with her family because it would be “good for Meghan’s image”. Even if there were no tension, doing tht would probably create some resentment.
When I read Carole’s interview it sounded lile she was speaking about Christmas in general, not necessarily this Christmas.
So my guess is that they were always going to spend Christmas at Sandringham and that they are either at Bucklebury now or the Middletons have joined them at Anmer by now.

  39. So relieved to see your incredible, comprehensive, and detailed posts, today. I know prayers, good wishes, and positive thoughts went your way, yesterday. So many of us were concerned, and relieved. I can only imagine the stress you've felt, too! Happy to hear you feel you are on the mend. Your followers are very loyal to yuu & your work - no worries!
Love this Christmas post! Catherine looked stunning from head to toe, and beyond. She displayed such a powerful, yet approachable, and happy presence! Maybe, it's the berry red she wore which looks great her. Her headpiece was perfect for the look. And, I am Ok with the matchy-matchy, for Catherine. She appeears confident in her dress & style and looked truly beautiful.
As for Megan, she looked like Megan, to me - a typical NYC look, but with a hat. Very pretty, comfortable. I do think most her outfits overwhelm her small frame in one way or the other, but, that's just my opinion.
I thought William looked very striking and attractive and I sensed something different in his manner & dress. A swagger? He looked good!
And, I agree with the previous comment about Harry; he does seem to have different attitude, almost annoyed to be there. Maybe it's coincidental, or the cold air. However, videos and photo I have viewed, lately, do seem to show a different Harry. A little darker, maybe mature? But I sense and see tension between William & Harry, the past 6 month or so. I sense tension & divison - it is sad. Hopefully, I am wrong in this.
The rest of the royal family looked great! Loved seeing so many of them, together.
Best of all, is HM. She continues to be absolutely beautiful, inspiring, and amazing. I am in awe of her.
Charlotte, wishing you & yours a Happy, healthy New Year. Thank you, for your time & efforts- love your posts!

    1. Supposedly according to several sources William expressed his thoughts that Meghan was not the proper choice for Harry. Since Diana was killed, he (Harry) has had a really strong negative feeling towards the press. Perhaps he is feeling the sting from the negativity towards Meghan.

      Delete
    2. Does anyone remember how disgruntled William looked during the tour of the South Pacific Islands in the fall of 2012? Those pics were taken as/after the infamous French sunbathing photos were released by Closer. They had been married for about 17 months, and William was furious that he had so soon been proven to be unable to protect his wife. In some shots, he appeared to be glowering at the press. Some observers commented on how Catherine seemed to be encouraging him on.
From the sample of negative online articles and comments I've come across, I imagine Harry has similar feelings about how his wife is being treated, and he's always been the brother to wear his heart on his sleeve. So I read his public demeanor more as being angry about what people are saying about/doing to Meghan and his inability to stop it than as tension between the brothers. I may be wrong. Time will tell. But there's certainly been enough unfair articles, assumptions, and gossip about Meghan to make any loving husband feel ballistic.
In the spirit of the season, I'd like to hope for the best and for love to heal any damaged spirits in our midst. Charlotte, thanks for all you do for all of us.

I think this is a hit from Kate. It’s festive, flattering and timeless. Decades from now, when she is Queen consort, these pictures will stand the test of time. I actually really love this style of hat on her!

Hint for William and Kate next year: leave out a tablet with a granola bar for the kids, and that’ll buy an extra hour of sleep. Haha!

  44. The Duchess looked stunning, loved the coat, when she first wore the green I was a fan of the coatdress then. Her accessories perfect, not a fan of the headband, but still didn't detract from the overall look. The Queen looked absolutely beautiful. The colour of her outfit was perfect for her. Her complexion is amazing. She stole the show!.

  45. I think Kate’s color choice is perfect for Christmas Day, it reminded with seeing the suede pumps she wore today the claret embellished tulle midi dress by Marchesa Notte in the same color berry. That was and still is one of my favorite dress & color. I have said this before this year is Kate year for wearing pink/burgundy/berry, she looks great in these colors. Spot on!

  47. So glad you are feeling better Charlotte. It’s funny but I think a lot of folk (myself included) realised that this isn’t some random blog we check out. It’s like a family member that you take for granted and don’t realise how important they were to you until they are gone.
Anyhow- the DoC looked great. Meghan looked great. William and Harry.... I wish they would stop the fidgeting with their clothes! Re Harry looking annoyed.....William is better at putting on his public face than Harry. William has had years to get used to Kate being criticized and work with her to make sure they were dealing with it together and he knew how she was feeling about it..... and only then did they get engaged. Harry is barely 2 years into the same and this is the 2nd major onslaught to deal with and his wife isn’t as familiar with how to play the game and she is pregnant. I don’t blame him for looking uncomfortable! Hopefully the press will find some one else to hound. In fairness during the summer it was that Meghan was replacing Pippa as Kate’s best buddy and Pippa was upset, now it seems Wimbledon day out is forgotten and Kate and Meghan are feuding since before the wedding, the evidence being that they are moving to the country...which Charles 3 siblings did and William did so Harry would also expect to do. And apartment 1A.... ugh .... this irks me no end. Why is it such a surprise that they are not moving into an apartment which currently has residents.... for the last 46 years..... and the working royals have historically not moved about ..... so why should Prince Richard move our??the only reason the Glousters apartment was perceived as Harry’s is because something the original Princess Pushy ( Marie Christine) said back in 2013....probably to divert attention and possibility of Harry wanting Apt 10!!!and the renovations which apparently were for Harry and a Meghan were started long before Harry was even engaged. A lot of random things being put together to sell papers rather than actual reporting. I really really hope the press leave them be and let them start their family life in peace and if they don’t, I hope the family all come together and support them as best they can.

  51. As far as the relationships between the Cambridges and the Sussexes goes, I think (as much as anyone can, from a distance) this pretty much sums things up.https://www.aol.com/article/entertainment/2018/11/27/royal-family-tension-prince-harry-meghan-markle-prince-william-kate-middleton/23602392/ The two families have and will have increasingly different roles to play in life. It's called growing pains. All families go through things like this, and my opinion is no one should make a real big deal about it. They will all be fine and settle into the roles they have to play. I think they are all adults and things will work out.

  55. Thank you Charlotte for your lovely Christmas Post! As you can imagine I was very concerned for you when the blog was not up as usual yesterday. I thought to myself, 1) Charlotte at least will know that she has people around the world thinking of her & sending her prayers & good wishes, hoping all is well! 2) Then I thought poor Charlotte, if something happens to put you aside in your life... it's broadcast to the world, as we would sense something was off (due to your incredible regularity of royal coverage) So, a mixed blessing I would imagine? I was so happy to see this post up, not the least because it was a sign that you were ok enough to post it! xoxo

I appreciate your words about loss & sickness. I'm not sure if the comment about loss was personal or general, but it resonated with me, as we just buried my husband's younger brother at Thanksgiving (leaving a young family behind/cancer) so while I threw myself back into work, I found myself lacking all Christmas spirit this year & was forcing myself through the motions & looking forward to 12/26. That said, with the pressure off myself, I was able to enjoy our whole extended family being together. We also had been stricken down with that cold virus that has been going round (many of my friends & colleagues in London have had it too) but it just dragged on & was the worst. So if you had that Charlotte, you're a trooper to even get this post out! I want to thank you for another year of incredible blogging & look forward to the excitement of meeting Baby Sussex in 2019.

Merry Christmas to all of my DKB & MAM Family here, I truly treasure you all. Hard to believe that some of us have been together now for going on almost 8 years! Sending Blessings & Wishes of Good Health to you all!

  56. I don't think there is something wrong between Harry and William, if you are looking back when Meghan was the first time with the royal family you can see William teaching Meghan how to behave when the Queen was leaving and Harry had the same interaction with his brother. I think Harry and William are more sensitive when they are in the public eye now that they are married as usual you have to think first of your wife especially if she wasn't in the public eye or if she is pregnant, now they are more mature . If you want to see changings between them you have to look back after William got married he had to think of his wife and Harry helped him just as William is doing now. I think it's a normal change and a normal behaviour.

  57. Loved reading everyone's posts thus far. I have to admit to loving the red/navy complimentary color scheme between Both Duchesses. I thought they both looked lovely & I am a full-fledged member of the Kate's hatband fan club! (tho I'm not sure we have a large membership) :) I especially love this one with it's unique pill box hat nod & the lovely bow detailing in the back, as well as how it sits on her head atop her lovely long hair. Meghan is simply glowing & I just love her in navy! Beret looks are not my personal favs on anyone, so there's that, however I do love the feather detailing! It's striking! The Queen.... well she is just a wonder! I loved her outfit & just relished & treasured her Christmas Speech! She seems the Queen/Matriarch to the world & why not. She's been a part of the world stage since before WWII & a living breathing part of world history for 9 decades! She also is the one person who could rightly give us all a dressing down when needed! I think the world needs to listen to & take to heart all that she has to say & the wisdom she has to bestow on us all! She has lived in the past, navigates the present & likely has a strong sense of the future! She is a global treasure!

  58. I wanted to share my thoughts on the brothers. Being a mother to 3 grown sons, I've given this a lot of thought. I believe what Will & Harry are going through was always going to happen & they will find their way through it & hopefully (if they are not too stubborn) will come out the other side with a new sense of themselves & the ability to respect one another in their new roles. It's not a sure thing, but I hope it will happen.

We all have seen their differences since they were growing up as little boys & they both had different destinies! We are now seeing that all come to fruition! It was easy for them to support each other & be mates, while they were young men growing up & clowning around. Harry supported William with all he went through while dating Kate & then showed his support as William married "a commoner"! (how silly all that "to do" was upon looking back on it!) Then Harry had his tough years & William & Kate were there to support him. They sort of fell into the rolls of Will & Kate & Harry tagging along. As Harry started pursuing his own causes (i.e. invictus etc) it was all nice & William of course supported him & everyone wanted Harry to find happiness. Well now Harry has come into his own, he really owns who he is, including his dynamic presence & he's married to an equally passionate partner & has his first child on the way. He's become his own man! Then there is William who has truly now stepped into his role as Prince of Wales in waiting & has shifted his whole dynamic (same as kate) they are full steam ahead & he appears to already have put on the mantel of "Future King" & Head of The Family...... knowing this will be his destiny!

So you have 2 strong willed & capable men, who have always had their destinies laid out before them. I believe they are in the midst of the growing pains, that were inevitable when this shift in their realities was to come to pass. Bottom line, William will be Harry's superior & bottom line, Harry is charismatic & dynamic & wants to change the world & probably doesn't want or like having to report to or ultimately answer to his brother! They are 2 strong & I believe potentially stubborn personalities & all we can do is sit back & let them work it out & find their own way. They are in the midst of redefining their relationship & I hope they can find their own corners & play nice & respectfully with each other........... this is what was always going to happen........ it's just all become very real! I hope they can get out of their own ways (as individuals) so as to not lose all the good blood between them! Blessedly..... they have chosen 2 level headed calming wives who can play well together & love their husbands & can help be a soothing balm, to help the brothers through this transition in their relationship! That's my prayer & wish for these 2 precious brothers, who have been through so much together in their lifetime!...... Ok, that's my 2 cents & my serving of arm chair psychology for the day! lol :)

I was worried about you Charlotte, glad to hear you are feeling better. I hope you had a good Christmas!
Kate looks absolutely majestic. I can not think of any other adjective! Happily chatting with Meghan, that makes me happy. I am wondering if it was William who had his doubts about the very fast engagement, wedding (and baby!) of Harry and Meghan. I am sure that he cares very much about his little brother and that he means well. If he did in fact say something that upset Harry, it would surely have been to protect him from disappointment later on. Harry has had his moments of "over excitement" in the lady (and not so lady) department, how would William know if this was the real deal, or just another fling? I think and hope that once life has settled down for Harry and Meghan a bit, they will have their baby and home all sorted, a new normal will appear for them all.
Best of all, I LOVE Her Majesty the Queen's outfit today, it is exquisite.
Merry Belated Christmas to the Kate and Meghan online community, it has been a fun and exciting year of royal watching!!

I never thought their engagement was fast at all -- they dated for over a year and are both in their 30s (which is also something that, I'm sure, played into the quick pregnancy). I could see William being a protective brother, but I just can't see him doing so to the point of being unwelcoming to Meghan and/or upsetting Harry. I guess it's always possible, though.

      Delete
    2. By royal standards, where success has been most recently found with engagements that lasted a number of years, it is fast - the long engagements were a reaction to the early engagements of the past which failed to give partners a good picture of royal life and led to difficult adjustments and even failed marriages.

For me, there was too much haste - particularly because Meghan had spent so little time in Britain and that time in private - giving her almost no chance to learn British ways and the subtle nuances of royalty. In retrospect, (and Julia in her Cassandra role advised a slow progression at the time) she was brought on much too quickly - even if they married - more time should have been allowed before she plunged into public life.

I can see William possibly offering what he thought was good advice to move more slowly - Harry is known to be impetuous. That happened once between sisters amongst my cousins - the younger counselled the elder to think seriously about a relationship - honestly, she was quite right, but then the older sister married the man and for a time, remembered and resented what her younger sister had said in all good faith, and made the mistake of repeating some of it to her spouse. Time sorted it and hopefully, whatever is happening here - and I do suspect something is - time will sort that too.

I wish you and Mr Charlotte a wonderful and exciting year filled with great things - the same for all posters here.

Kate looks lovely - I adore that coat. I would like a full hat but her hair is beautifully done.
All the other royal ladies are fine - if I were to quibble Autumn's uneven hemline with the funky lining and the queen's chilly grey are not quite to my taste - the latter I would like better not in winter - but I would never like that hat.

  69. If anyone is actually feuding I hope it's not William and Harry. That would hurt. I guess because I've watched them since they were born.

The Duchesses looked beautiful and both seemed to have a genuine happy and relaxed look to them.

Christmas must be an odd time for the BRF as they are "working" and are on display whereas most of us see this time of year as "down time". Although they are only on display with this walk to church there are other traditions they all follow - like the lunches, dinner, gift exchange, shoot, and the Queen's speech, etc. I can imagine anyone joining the royal family being warned that Christmas is usually done a certain way here so you will have to celebrate with your family on another day. Lol :)

    1. I think one of the hardest things in the RF is how their roles are constantly changing and often on a downhill trajectory. Take Sophie for example, when she joined she was very much the most senior royal female after HM. Role on 20 years and she is one of the extras at the back of the family walk. It is difficult to even get a good picture of her.
The same goes for Andrew, he was very much the Harry of the 80’s. Now Harry and Meghan are front and central move on 25 years and they will also be extras with all the attention on the Cambridge kids.
To get back to your question Allison I think it would be only human to have a little resentment at being overshadowed (even if you actually like the person overshadowing you)

      Delete
    2. I don’t think the interest in Harry and Meghan will fade....they will always have a strong base in America and the Commonwealth...so will their children

      Delete
    3. I have to agree with the first Anon - as a long time royal watcher I've seen the interest settle if not fade in royals where at the time one couldn't possibly imagine it happening - with Margaret and Andrew for instance - seeing Andrew now, it's difficult to imagine how excited we all were by him back then.

Harry and Meghan's children most likely will not have a royal role either.

      Delete
    4. I think the change in interest may have as much to do with fan deficiencies and fickleness as royal failures and changes in proximity to the throne. Some prefer to follow young, attractive, physically active royals than those middle-aged or older but quietly doing the Queen's work. I think it has to do with the superficial nature of the interest in royals. They are expected to entertain and provide media fodder. There is excitement and then here is respect and loyalty. Perhaps more than calling on changes in royalty the public or fans need to adjust their own values.

      Delete
    5. I believe that's true Anon, which is why I've said I will no longer be part of a cult of personality. I follow the royal family as an institution which - in my eyes - has a particular well-defined purpose and I judge members of it solely by how well they fit with that purpose, not by their individual glamour. This is why I'm strongly opposed to the blending of celebrity and royalty which has been happening particularly and very dramatically of late. I believe a sense of that distinction is also informing Kate's actions and dress, especially recently, and would like to think she sees that too, because in earlier years, I've wondered about her sense of history.

I have seen the hysteria for youth and beauty - and the magic personality can bring - I even fell under that with Diana - and later. following her death and the troubles of the nineties, realised how damaging it was and if I were to continue to be a royalist I had to look to the meaning of the institution rather than the often very flawed individuals who might represent it at a given moment.

This may not be the answer you were looking for as I believe both the public and royals need to adjust their values to meet these goals. The public needs to accept that royals are there for a purpose other than entertaining - although particularly abroad, that is always going to be difficult. I know there are even some of us here on the blog who have said they follow royalty for the pleasure, not the purpose, and as long as they see there is something more, that's fine.

But the younger royals need to make certain their conduct doesn't slide into conduct associated with celebrity, however alluring that siren-song may be, and to respect the values and what may seem the trivial rules of royal life. This means honouring the very gradual - some may think glacial - nature of change that comes with an ancient institution that is meant to serve as a constant in a rapidly changing world. It is not something for one individual to remake in their own image or they risk destroying it.

    6. An interesting discussion. Well said Julia, and I completely agree with your last paragraph. Tradition and trust in the institution is one thing to attain and quite another to maintain. The Queen has done an exceptional job, and her longevity in the role and her keen sense of responsibility to her people have provided the constant that is needed. She will be a very hard act to follow and that responsibility will fall to the younger royals, I hope that they realize that in a world where popularity is fleeting, purpose is enduring. cc

    7. CeCe-can't one have both popularity and purpose? Style AND substance? Is there a difference between popularity and celebrity? I think often people are celebrities by chance, not necessarily by choice. If a royal becomes a celebrity through unsolicited promotion by media and fans, should the royal be disparaged for that celebrity? Does a public person automatically become a celebrity?
Is it ok for a royal to engage in certain activities, as long as the media don't publicize it? I am thinking that Andrew's activities that are blamed for his fall from popularity were not more deplorable than some of those suspected of and spoken quietly of other royals. (by the way--Andrew is about third in the numbers game, right up there with HM's other three ) What I am saying is that the British media (fed by reader demand at times) commonly build a royal up only to knock him down when that serves the purpose of the source. I maintain that if we expect the royals to not act like celebrities (whatever that means) should we not also take a careful look at who is actually promoting the celebrity?

These are thoughts that interest me. They aren't meant as challenges to anyone.

  74. Like everyone, I'd just like to add my relief that you are feeling better, Charlotte. Thank you for remembering those who may have lost a loved one, and is seeing the first Christmas without them. It makes it a bitter sweet time as we celebrate with those who are with us, while missing one who will always be absent.

I think Kate looked very regal and festive. The long coat dress with the hair band may very well become a signature look for her. I loved how this band showed off her beautiful wavy hair at the back. Bands do nothing to obscure the face, a feature I remember the queen considering important in choosing a hat. Her slim figure after three children is totally amazing.

I was amused by William's preoccupation with his scarf. I've never noticed that he fusses with himself in public.

  75. So glad to hear that you are mending, Charlotte, and a belated Merry Christmas to you. I thought Kate looked completely lovely today. The color was festive and her hat band suited the entire look very well. Someday I would love to stand among the Sandringham crowds and see the royals in person, but until that time, thank you for your post and devotion to a classy blog.

  76. Charlotte , you created a wonderful community on this blog. So first and foremost, your health is more important than when you post. I am very happy to know that you are feeling better. I enjoy how you include HM’s Christmas speech in this posts. This year, her message was very much needed in our world. DoC looked very regal and more confident interacting with the public than I have ever seen her. It was great to see the videos of the rest of the RF walking to the church.

  77. Does anyone know which are the two babies born this year that the Queen is referring to? Other than Prince Louis, who else? Was it Zara's baby? I know that Pippa had hers but I doubt the Queen was referring to hers. Not sure who she's referring to. Thank you & Happy New Year to all. Thank you.

Yes, the second baby was Zara's baby Lena, who is also the Queen's great grandchild and grandaughter of her daughter Anne.

    2. I assume she's referring to her two newest great-grandchildren Prince Louis and Lena Tindall.

    4. Thank you to Anglophile in Ohio, Purple Fields, & Zora from Prague for replying to my question. I did have a feeling she meant Zara's baby. Everyone seems to be more informed than me. I didn't even know that Zara's latest baby was named Lena. Perhaps because Zara isn't on the headlines that often.

  78. Take care of yourself, Charlotte. Our family is experiencing the loss of my nephew at Christmastime this year for the first time. He was 24 and a first year law student when a reckless driver hit him at 55 mph last February. It was a senseless and unnecessary death. My brother is devastated. Thank you for your kind words about those grieving this Christmas season.

I think Kate looked wonderful On Christmas day! I loved this coat in green and it looked beautiful in the berry color, also. I was a little disappointed that the crown on her hat was an open crown. I did like that you cannot tell that it is an open crown from the sides. I did like the bow on the back.

I thought Meghan's purse was very fun and unique! Otherwise her outfit was unremarkable.

    The queen looked lovely!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year all!

This is a gorgeous color on Kate and very seasonal! The coat is ok...classic Kate, but exactly the same as what she's worn recently. I am also in the camp that doesn't like the headbands, but this one is a little better...or maybe it's just that I like the way Kate's hair is done.

Besides that, though, I love seeing her and Meghan interacting and seeing their unique styles so on show. I don't think there's any tension between them at all (and never have thought there was any), but after seeing the footage today, I do wonder if Harry and William are getting along. My guess is they're simply going through natural changes in relationship dynamic. I hope it's nothing more serious.

I really like kate's outfit today and I have to say the headbands are really growing on me, not the worse trend to hit lately:) I think kate is poised and confident, and I really love how she can walk by herself, says a lot about her marriage and her confident nature. looking forward to following in the new year! I hope everyone has a safe and happy new years:)

  93. I don't often recommend another blog, but Newmyroyals has a lovely feature on the New Year's Speech given by Queen Margrethe. It's a very Danish speech - I can't imagine it happening here and yet the message is very similar to the queen's - one of caring, unity and responsibility. There is also a wonderful collection of photos of her giving the speech over the decade - with and without her specs! I assume those were released with the speech. It's worth popping over.

True and I don't like that allegation, but it happened years ago now (apparently in 2014) and today the blogs are quite different including different photos and most crucially different information provided. Frankly, today, 'new my royals' despite its alleged shady origins is by far the better blog for royalists - and must be getting its information from other sources.

The other blog is the 'the real my royals'. It includes a massive amount of Hollywood star snaps - nice if you like such things but making it very difficult to sort the royal photos if you aren't interested in celebrities - many of whom I've never heard of nor care to. It has reasonably decent search ability for some royal families and high quality photos but gives little information about the royal events. It may have more videos available - I don't pay much attention to that.

Despite my distaste for hacking, New my royals is a much better blog these days for a dedicated royal watcher with no interest in celebrities. It includes broader search possibilities including by month and year as well as broader search categories for royal families. But most importantly, it gives considerable information about each royal event - who attends and often important details about the event itself.

The translation of Margrethe's speech is not available on 'the real my royals' nor are the photos of her past speeches, although they may show up on Order of Sartorial Spendour' eventually - so there was no point in me recommending that site. I should note I don't follow Twitter or other social media.

The best source would have been the now defunct The Royal Digest which had Charlotte's usual high standards. Alas, it is no more and with Mad about Meghan now, I doubt Charlotte will ever have the time to revive it - especially with the heavy research she does for her blogs. So for now, I'll commend 'new my royals' as the best all over royal site I've found for all royal families, although there are some others out there and also suggest those interested look at 'the real my royals' which sometimes has other photos - such as those of Pippa on holiday at the moment. Those along with OSS and its sister 'From her Majesty's jewel vault'; 'The Court Jeweller' (Alas without A Tiara A Day which was so wonderful)' the royal hat blog, (best for events where hats are worn but it does cover other events on weekends); Luxarazzi (For the Luxembourg royal family), What Kate Wore and the Queen Letizia fashion site are the main blogs I read. I'd be interested in what other blogs readers here suggest.

  95. Happy New Year to everyone. I think 2019 is going to be a very exciting and busy year for the Cambridges. I have a couple of predictions for William and Catherine and my first prediction is that there could be three royal tours for them this year. One this Spring, this Summer, and in the Fall. I hope in one of these tours that they will visit Spain and Italy because what a treat for us royal fans to see the styles of Catherine and Letizia together. Also I have a feeling there will be two state visits this year in the UK, one with the French President and the other with Polish President but we have to wait and see. Again these are just my predictions that could possibly happen but I'm really excited for William and Catherine this year.

  98. Julia, Wanting your thoughts on something please. I read survey results (from only 1000-2000 respondents) that a majority of people would like Charles to step aside for William. I frankly think Charles will do the job as well as it can be done considering no one can replace the Queen and I don't think William at all wants to be King. I think it's a very bad idea and realize that it can't happen anyway. But does that signal that the institution has already undergone a big change? I am very far from being expert in things royal, but the generation of the Queen's grandchildren are doing things so differently. The fact that William and Kate lived together, and for so long, is such a departure from earlier norms. Harry and Meghan and then Jack and Eugenie living together at KP seems very modern. Beatrice's situation seems like it would have been squashed years ago. My question is whether the acceptance by the Queen and by the other senior royals means thing have already changed a great deal?

I also find it interesting to speculate what Christmas will be like when Charles is king? Where will he celebrate, and will it be just his family joining him?

    1. The most I can say Allison as someone who doesn't talk about royal matters much outside of this blog is the last time a poll implied a certain leader was going to have a mandate, it didn't happen. I've seen polls on Charles and William and then the next month one that says the opposite. So you can take what I say here as personal opinion only. But never say it can't happen. Succession has never been that rigid when there was a real need for change. But I don't see an active push for that now.
Times are very uncertain and people don't want change in other areas, so I think it's actually a conservative time for the royal family. I believe there's an acceptance that Charles will be the next king - after all the Commonwealth just embraced his leadership this year. If Camilla would hold to her original plan of calling herself a princess consort and not being crowned, I think there would be much wider acceptance of Charles. The one place I believe polls because they are by wide amounts and consistent is that Camilla remains very unpopular. On the other blog, someone noted a time back she is popular with the press - and so she is -but being popular and accommodating to the press doesn't make you popular with the public - a lesson there.
My feeling is that if Charles said tomorrow he thought he would stand back and let William be king, no one but a few conservatives (and republicans who see a reign of Charles as an opening) would mind very much but the issue won't be forced. But I feel its imperative William and Kate take advantage of their current good will - itself a conservative reaction - and step up a lot more - those engagement numbers were abysmal - Kate had a baby but William has no excuse.
I don't see people living together matters - that was an issue resolved in the eighties - in fact long relationships have been seen as an antidote to the problems of too hasty marriages. Edward and Sophie lived together. But I think the question will be more what public lives of the younger royals should look like - and this is not the time for major changes in how royals do things - because there is too much change already.
Now guests have gone, I've just started Robert Hardman's Queen of the World - (I can't read when I'm trying to be nice to people.) He quotes the queen saying - I'm paraphrasing - she embodies standards that no one else does (and that's why she's so admired.) And with such present uncertainty I believe people crave the security of those standards - regardless of what happens when bedroom doors are shut. But Charlotte is decades younger - perhaps we should ask her view.

      Delete
  99. Thank you; I appreciate your views. And I think, although I don't check and therefore don't know, that Charles works fairly hard at his job, and Camilla seems to be trying. I think they would be the best choice for succession. They are old enough to have more of a tie to the "old days."
